Amsterdam is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, thanks to its flat streets and amazing cycling culture. We’ll show you how to get around town like the locals, pedalling along the pretty canals and around some of the city’s scenic wonders like the beautiful Vondelpark and the trendy Jordaan neighbourhood.

Enjoy a dinner in a historic Dutch House

We’ll show you around Amsterdam’s beautiful medieval buildings - but we’ll also take you inside one of these historic houses for a delicious meal of Dutch delicacies and drinks. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped straight into the Dutch Golden Age as you’re surrounded by the city’s rich history and superb cuisine.

Admire the Royal Palace of Amsterdam

With its magnificent 17th-century architecture and regal history, the Royal Palace is one of the best places to visit in Amsterdam. Although it’s the official reception palace of the Dutch monarch, it’s often open to visitors, and you can waltz across the marble floors, admire the grand hallways, and gaze up at the dazzling chandeliers.

Nibble your way through Amsterdam's traditional foods

Amsterdam’s dining scene is one of Europe’s best, and we’ll take you on a tasting tour with a Local Specialist, to learn all about the flavours of Dutch cuisine. Our top 5 things to do in Amsterdam

Our Amsterdam holidays show you all the iconic Amsterdam attractions like the pretty canals and famous architecture, along with the hidden gems of this captivating city.

Amsterdam Museum

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the history of Amsterdam, you’ve got to visit the Amsterdam Museum. Housed in the old city orphanage, the museum tells the story of this 1,000-year-old city from the Middle Ages to modern times, including a medieval aerial map and masterpieces like Brietner’s The Dam.

Rembrandt House Museum

Hailed as one of the world’s greatest artists, there’s no better place to learn about Rembrandt van Rijn than the Rembrandt House Museum. As the former home where Rembrandt lived and painted for many years, the building has been restored to its 17th-century styling and the museum displays a number of Rembrandt’s masterpieces.

Stedelijk Museum

Located a short stroll from the iconic Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, you have to make a stop at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam’s top museum of contemporary and modern art. You’ll see incredible works from the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, along with photos, sculptures and interactive displays.

Best museums in Amsterdam

You can’t visit this incredible city without making a stop at one of the famous Amsterdam museums, and we’ll show you where to marvel at the masters of art and discover the city’s fascinating history.

You’ll find these deep-fried delights all over Amsterdam, and you’re sure to fall in love with the famous kroket. It’s made with all kinds of fillings like meat, cheese, rice, pasta, mushrooms or vegetables melded with mashed potatoes and a thick béchamel sauce, which is then breaded and deep-fried to crispy perfection.

If you want to try a real Dutch breakfast, it’s got to be hagelslag. It's similar to sprinkles (but definitely not the same!), scattered over a piece of buttered bread and enjoyed by children and adults alike. Chocolate is the most common flavour and it’s sure to become your new favourite morning ritual in Amsterdam.

There are few things more Dutch than the smell of poffertjes wafting through the air and you can’t resist tucking into a cone of these small, fluffy pancakes topped with dripping butter and powdered sugar. Whether you eat them as a snack or dessert, it’s the perfect sweet treat to enjoy on your Amsterdam holiday.

Best food in Amsterdam

One of the best parts of Amsterdam is the delicious cuisine, and our Amsterdam tours will show you all the very best places to satisfy your Dutch food cravings.

How to spend 5 days in amsterdam: the best itinerary + where to stay.

You want to spend 5 days in Amsterdam and you’re looking for the best things to do?

You’re at the right place!

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared for you this 5-day itinerary in Amsterdam.

Five days is the perfect duration to discover the best places to visit in Amsterdam as well as the city’s surroundings.

With more than 18 million tourists every year, Amsterdam is simply one of the trendiest destination in the world!

Visiting an European capital such as Rome , Madrid or London often means large crowds of people (we are talking about tens of thousands of tourists a day!) and Amsterdam is no exception.

Unfortunately, this means endless waiting lines in front of iconic monuments and museums such as the Royal Palace or the Rijksmuseum.

Hopefully, there are a few ways to avoid this 😉.

You actually have 2 options that will allow you to save a ton of time (and money!) during your 5-day visit to Amsterdam.

You will see, it’s very simple: I am going to tell your everything is this guide and you will just have to follow my advice for a perfect stay!

So, here are the two best solutions to save time:

Your first option to get priority access to the top attractions and save money is to get the City Card I Amsterdam.

Valid for a period between 1 and 5 days (depending one what you choose when booking), the City Card entitles you to free or reduced entrance to the main tourist attractions.

It also gives you free access to public transport, including trams, buses and the metro.

In my opinion, it’s really the perfect choice for a 5-day stay in Amsterdam.

Once you have placed your order online , you will receive an email with the instructions to redeem your City Card on arrival.

With the I Amsterdam City Card, you will get:

  • Free entrance to the city’s museums (including the the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum of course!)
  • A canal cruise
  • Discounts on certain attractions such as the Amsterdam Dungeon and the Heineken Experience
  • 25% off bike hire and in certain restaurants
  • Unlimited use of public transport during your 5 days in Amsterdam.

To buy your I Amsterdam City Card and see the full list of attractions included, simply click on the button below:

2. Priority tickets for Amsterdam’s best tourist attractions

Your 2nd option to avoid queuing during your 5-day itinerary in Amsterdam is to buy skip-the-line tickets.

In Amsterdam, you can buy fast track tickets for the main museums as well as for the most popular activities such as the canal cruise or the bike tours.

Here is the list of all skip-the-line tickets and excursions I will be talking about in this 5-day itinerary in Amsterdam.

To view the prices and to book, simply click on the links below (you will also find them throughout the article):

  •  The Royal Palace of Amsterdam
  • The Dungeon
  • Amsterdam Museum
  • Guided tour of the Red Light District
  • Private tour of Jordaan
  • The Rijksmuseum
  • Van Gogh Museum
  • The Stedelijk Museum

  • Visit to Edam + Volendam + Marken + Zaanse Schans + cheese tasting
  • Keukenhof – Entry + transport

If you already know your travel dates (or as soon as you will have them!) , you should really book your accommodation.

As Amsterdam is one of the most touristic cities in the world , the hotels offering the best value for money are often fully booked months in advance.

As a seasoned traveler, I can assure you that it’s always by planning as far in advance as possible that I’ve found the best hotels or apartments deals.

You agree that it would be a shame to somewhat ruin your stay in Amsterdam by ending up in a not-so-great hotel that costed you a fortune, right? 😅

So your best bet is to take 5 minutes now to have a look at  traveler’s favorite hotels in Amsterdam.

And if you like one of the hotels you find, book it!

It’s fast, it’s easy and most accommodation offer free cancellation. That’s the best way to protect yourself from the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

After securing your dream stay, it’s time to continue reading this guide!

5 days in Amsterdam: recommended itinerary

Let’s now plan your 5-day itinerary in Amsterdam!

For this itinerary, I assume you will be spending 5 full days in Amsterdam and purchased, the I Amsterdam City Card or your fast track tickets .

That’s the best way to save time and money during your stay!

If you still have questions after reading this guide or need help planning you holiday, don’t hesitate to ask me your questions in the comments section located at the end of this article.

So, what are the best places to visit in Amsterdam in 5 days?

Day 1 – Discover the historic center

itinéraire Amsterdam jour 1

Day 1 visits:

A. Dam Square and the Royal Palace B. The Amsterdam Dungeon or the Amsterdam Museum C. The Béguinage (Begijnhof) D. The flower market E. Zuiderkerk and Nieuwmarkt F. Red Light District G. Oude Kerk

Let’s start you 5-day visit to Amsterdam in Dam Square, the city’s main square located in the heart of the historic center.

There, you will find:

  • The National Monument
  • Nieuwe Kerk church
  • The Royal Palace of Amsterdam

Serving as the Town Hall from the 17th to the 19th century, and then as a royal residence , the palace’s rooms are worth a look for their period furniture, paintings and sculptures.

Entrance to the palace isn’t included in the City Card, so you should buy your skip the line tickets in advance. It would be silly to waste time before visiting your very first attraction of the day!

The price is the same as at the ticket office and the audio guide is included.

You need to book your tickets to the Royal Palace of Amsterdam here:

To get to Dam square, you have 2 options:

  • A 10 minute walk from the central station on Damrak street or Nieuwendijk .
  • Take the tram from anywhere in town.

place du Dam Amsterdam

For your 2nd visit, you will have the choice between 2 attractions, both relating to the history of the city but in a totally different style.

  • The Dungeon of Amsterdam, where you can witness a session of torture , a trial during the Inquisition or witches burning at the stake . These staged productions with actors in period costume are the perfect opportunity to discover the country’s dark history.

And the great part is that you will be invited to join in and participate during this 1h15 show!

Personally, I really enjoyed it, the acting and costume are great and it was a lot fun.

The City Card I Amsterdam entitles you to a 25% discount on your entry ticket.

If you don’t have the City Card, you need to book your priority tickets by clicking here.

  • The Amsterdam Museum

If you prefer a more traditional visit, you can go to the Amsterdam Museum, dedicated to the 1000-year history of the capital of the Netherlands . Interactive, modern and instructive, it’s the perfect choice to discover the rich history of the Dutch capital.

Free entry with the City Card . Otherwise, you need to buy your tickets by clicking here.

The Dungeon and the Museum are both located less than 5 minutes from Dam Square on foot.

If you’re not interested in the Dungeon or the Amsterdam Museum, in the same area there is also the Body Worlds exhibition, Madame Tussauds wax museum and the Ripley’s museum.

Amsterdam Dungeon

Following a morning of indoor visits, you should dedicate the rest of the day to discovering the city center on foot.

You should start by visiting The Beguinage (“Begijnhof”), one of the city’s oldest inner courtyards , located near the Dungeon and the Amsterdam Museum .

It was once occupied exclusively by a community of women known as the Béguines, hence the name.

There, you can also admire the last wooden house in Amsterdam . This type of construction was banned in Amsterdam centuries ago because of the high fire risk.

Begijnhof

Continue your walk for 5 minutes and you will reach the canal where one of the most popular attractions is located: the famous flower market.

In the Bloemenmarkt, you will find several nice small shops selling the iconic flower of the Netherlands, the tulip!

They come in all shapes, colors and materials: fresh flowers, bulbs, and even wooden sculptures.

You can also take advantage of your visit to the flower market to buy souvenirs . You will find the usual postcards and magnets as well as some more typical options such as the famous wooden clogs.

I have no doubt that you will find at least a little something to bring back from your 5-day trip to Amsterdam!

marché aux fleurs Amsterdam

Let’s continue your itinerary and head to Zuiderkerk Church , a 10-minute walk from the market via the Kloveniersburgwal canal .

If you’re lucky, you might be able to climb up the bell tower to contemplate the city. However, the opening hours are a bit random, and you will have to be accompanied by a guide to get up there.

But that’s doesn’t stop you from taking a look!

Not far from Zuiderkerk, there is another famous square in the city: Nieuwmarkt square.

The small castle with red shutters built in the center once was the gateway to the city. Nowadays, the ground floor houses a café and restaurant.

If you continue a bit further north, you will stumble on the tiny Chinatown district of Amsterdam , with traditional Asian grocery stores and shops.

Nieuwmarkt Waag

Now comes the hottest part of the day!

Yes, it’s time to visit the famous Red Light District.

You’ve probably already heard of this iconic district of Amsterdam, known as a hotspot for prostitution.

It’s in this district that you’ll find the famous brothels’s red-fronted windows, behind which you can see the prostitutes waiting for their clients.

However, you shouldn’t take photos as a souvenir: it’s strictly forbidden, and you will have problems if you do.

To go deeper into the subject (and no, that’s not what you’re thinking! 😅), you can opt for a Red light district guided tour . You need to book it here:

Here are some slightly less traditional but equally instructive visits:

  • Visit to the museum of prostitution in Amsterdam
  • Visit to a brothel with a professional

red light district Amsterdam

In the Red Light District, you can also find Oude Kerk, the oldest church in Amsterdam, built in the 1300s.

Personally, I really liked Oude Kerk typical architecture, with red bricks and large stained glass windows.

If you have the City Card Amsterdam , you can visit the inside for free , but it’s in my opinion not worth paying the 15€ admission fee otherwise.

In fact , you’re mostly paying to see one of the contemporary art exhibition they usually host inside, which in my opinion don’t really fit the place and are not really worth it.

Oude Kerk Amsterdam

Best things to do and see in Amsterdam on Day 2

itinéraire Amsterdam jour 2

Day 2 visits:

A. Jordaan B. The cheese museum C. Anne Frank’s house D. Visit to a museum: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, MOCO or Stedelijk E. Vondelpark F. Canal cruise

After a good night’s sleep, you should spend the morning visiting a very typical neighborhood of Amsterdam: The Jordaan.

This district located to the west of Dam Square is especially famous for its traditional red brick houses lined along the canals.

While strolling around, don’t miss the beautiful Westerkerk church, the largest Protestant church in the country.

The best way to discover the Jordaan and learn more about Amsterdam is to book a guided tour.

The best 2-hour guided visit needs to be booked here:

And if you’re a food-lover, you should opt for this fantastic food tasting tour by clicking there!

quartier Jordaan Westerkerk

In the Jordaan, you will also find the cheese museum.

To be honest, it won’t take you long at all to visit the museum itself: it’s just a small exhibition located in the basement of a cheese shop, with a few explanations about how cheese is made.

The shop on the ground floor offers a wide selection of cheese and free tasting. It’s thus the perfect place to taste all kinds of Gouda , an excellent local cheese that comes flavoured with pesto, chilli or truffles

True cheese-lovers might prefer to replace this visit with a tasting workshop!

The one I have selected allows you to taste 5 of the best Dutch cheeses , made by Henri Willig , famous for his high-quality traditional cheeses. And to make it even better, it’s accompanied by local wines and beers!

Simply click on the green button below to try the best cheese during your 5 days in Amsterdam:

musee du fromage

Still in the Jordaan neighborhood, there is another place you should visit during your 5 days in Amsterdam: The Anne Frank house.

This is where the young girl wrote her world-famous diary, the diary of Anne Frank.

It tells the story of her entire family , who were forced to hide in a part of that house to escape the deportation of Jews during World War II.

You can visit several rooms of the house, decorated with photos, objects and newspaper articles that will immerse you in the family’s living conditions during this horrific period.

Before visiting Anne Frank’s house, you should be aware: admission tickets can only be purchased online on the official website by clicking on this link.

80% of tickets are sold 2 months in advance and the rest are released every day from 9.00 am. These tickets sell very quickly and you should really buy yours as soon as possible.

The house is located close to the cheese museum, across the canal.

If you couldn’t get tickets or don’t want to visit the house, you can instead opt for a guided tour of the Jewish quarter.

It’s a great way to learn more about Anne Frank and life in Amsterdam during WWII.

You need to book your 2h guided tour by clicking here:

maison d'Anne Franck Amsterdam

After your visit to the Jordaan , it’s time to discover one of Amsterdam’s world-famous museums.

Most of them are located around the Museumplein , which translates as “Museums Square”.

To get there from Anne Frank’s house , you have 2 possibilities:

  • A 30 minute walk along the canal
  • By tram in 20 minutes.

The most famous museum is without a doubt the Rijksmuseum, the largest in the city.

There, you will be able to admire a huge collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.

Some of the masterpieces on display include:

  • Vermeer’s The Milkmaid
  • Rembrandt’s The Night Watch
  • Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait in Grey Felt Hat.

Entry to the Rijksmuseum is included in the City Card I Amsterdam or the  Amsterdam Pass. If you don’t have one of these city passes, you need to buy your skip-the-line tickets for the Rijksmuseum by clicking here .

Depending on your interests, you can also visit:

  • The Van Gogh museum , dedicated to the famous Dutch painter. There, you can admire more than 200 of his paintings. Free entry with the City Card and Amsterdam Pass. Otherwise, you need to buy your skip-the-line ticket here.
  • The MOCO is dedicated to contemporary art with an exhibition on Banksy. Free entry with the City Card and 10% discount with the Amsterdam Pass.
  • Stedelijk Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. Free entry with the City Card and 10% discount with the Amsterdam Pass.

Rijkmuseum

To get some fresh air after a few hours at the museum, you should go relax at the Vondelpark.

The city’s largest public park is only a 5-minute walk from the Museumplein.

There, you will find several lakes , walkways for walking or cycling and playgrounds for the children.

You would rather enjoy a little pick-me-up after visiting the museums?

In that case, you should rather go to the House of Bols Experience . You won’t have to go very far as it’s located in a building right next to the Museumplein.

You will learn everything about the process of making the oldest spirits brand in the world, and get to taste an excellent cocktail at the end of it!

You need to book your tickets by clicking here.

Vondelpark

To end your 2nd day in style, you can do the most iconic activity of Amsterdam: a boat tour on the canals.

It’s something you shouldn’t miss during your 5-day itinerary in Amsterdam!

Sit comfortably in the boat and discover the architecture of the capital from a new angle.

As there are lots of different cruises to choose from, I have selected the 5 best for you (simply click on the links for details and to book):

  • 75-minute boat tour to the historic centre + audio guide
  • One-hour boat tour with audio guide to admire the facades of houses of the Dutch Golden Age
  • One-hour boat tour in semi-open electric boat to fully enjoy the view
  • 90-minute evening boat tour to enjoy the city lights
  • Luxury boat tour with drinks and snacks included.

Note that if you have the City Card I Amsterdam or the Amsterdam Pass , you are entitled to a free canal cruise.

Day 3: Best places to visit in Amsterdam

itinéraire Asmterdam jour 3

Day 3 visits:

A. The Albert Cuypmarkt B. Heineken Experience C. Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug) D. Visit to a museum or guided tour of Amsterdam by bike E. A’DAM Lookout

Let’s start the 3rd day of your 5-day stay in Amsterdam at the Albert Cuypmarkt.

This market is one of the largest outdoor markets in Europe. In addition to classic fruits and vegetables, you will find local products, food stalls, flowers and souvenirs.

Albert Cuypmarkt is located in Pijp district and is open from Monday to Saturday .

Before lunch, you can enjoy a pint of beer at the Heineken Experience , just 5 minutes walk from the market.

You can visit the former premises of the famous brewery and learn more about the history of the company.

Of course, you will also learn everything about the different stages of beer production!

And at the end of your visit, you indeed get to enjoy a good pint of beer.

You need to book your tickets in advance here.

Heineken Experience Amsterdam

You can finish the morning with a photo break at the Skinny Bridge or “Magere Brug”.

Film buffs and fans of the James Bond saga will recognize the bridge that appears in the film ‘Diamonds are For Ever’.

This bridge dates back to the 17th century and was originally so narrow that only two people could cross it at the same time. This earned it the nickname of “Skinny Bridge .”

Since then, it has been enlarged twice to allow a few more people to cross at the same time, and it can also be opened to allow boats to pass.

Visually, it’s nothing exceptional, but it’s still an interesting historical anecdote of the city of Amsterdam.

Magere Brug

In the afternoon, let’s continue your 5-day visit to Amsterdam.

You have different options:

  • Visit a museum

There are a few museums located close to the Magere Brug:

  • The Hermitage Museum
  • Rembrandt House Museum
  • The Tropen Museum

But as Amsterdam isn’t that big, you can also easily return to the Museumplein and visit one of the museums you didn’t have time for yesterday.

  • Rent a bike or join a guided bike tour to discover the city like a local!

Amsterdam is famous for its numerous bike paths that run all over the city. If the weather is nice, you should really take a bike ride to immerse yourself in the local culture.

As you may know, biking is by far the favorite means of transportation of the Amsterdamers.

The easiest way to rent a bike, is to book it here:

And if you prefer to go on a guided bike tour to discover the best of the city with a local, you need to book it there:

  • If you are going on this 5-day trip to Amsterdam with your family and you’re looking for an activity that the kids will enjoy , you should go to the Amsterdam Zoo or the NEMO Science Museum for a great fun activity.

At any time during the afternoon, you might also want to stop and relax at a coffee shop . Consuming cannabis sitting comfortably in a dedicated café is another Amsterdam institution, and it’s completely legal here!

There is are also a really good Cannabis and coffee shop guided tour that you need to book here:

Amsterdam velo

At the end of the afternoon, return to Amsterdam Central Station.

From the other side of the building, you can take the free river shuttle boat and cross the river. You will arrive at Buiksloterweg dock.

You will then have to walk less than 5 minutes to reach the next activity of the day : This is Holland.

This attraction allows you to virtually fly over the Netherlands for about ten minutes. To complete the experience, the seats move and you can even smell the tulips as you pass over the fields.

A discount is offered with the City Card.

You need to book your tickets by clicking here.

And to end your day in style, you can go to the top of A’DAM Lookout, Amsterdam’s observation deck. It offers a nice view over the whole city.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try the highest swing in Europe!

Entry to A’DAM Lookout is included in the Amsterdam City Card.

Adam Lookout

After exploring the city’s best places to visit during your first 3 days, you should continue your 5-day itinerary in Amsterdam with the visit of the surroundings.

So today, let’s go to Zaanse Schans, a village famous for its waterfront windmills. You will for sure have seen photos of it while in Amsterdam, as it’s featured on all postcards!

I won’t hide that it’s a very touristy place, with shops selling cheeses, clogs, souvenirs (more expensive than in Amsterdam) but it’s well done and everything was built while respecting the traditional architecture.

There are also 2 small museums: one on watchmaking (a craft specific to this village) and the other dedicated to windmills and their operation.

You can also visit the inside of the windmills for free with your Amsterdam Pass/City Card (€5 each otherwise) and take a short boat tour to see them from another angle (also free with the Amsterdam Pass).

You have several options to get to Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam:

  • Take bus no. 391 or 891 from the central station. It runs every 15 minutes or so.
  • Take the train to Zaanse station (20 minutes) and walk 15 minutes to reach the windmills.
  • Opt for an organized day trip with transport and guide included. The hassle free solution! You need to click here to book it.

Zaanse Schans

As the visit to the windmills will probably not take you all day, you should then head to the beautiful village of Haarlem.

You can get there by train.

You will first have to take the train to Amsterdam (20 minutes) and then another train to Haarlem (15 minutes).

When I was planning my 5-day visit to Amsterdam, I had not really heard of Haarlem and I am quite surprised because this small town is really worth a visit.

You will for sure love this very picturesque place , with beautiful brick houses, cobbled streets and a very impressive church (entry fee: 2.50€).

To ensure you don’t miss anything of this charming town, you should first go to the tourist office located on the church square. For 50 cents , you can buy a map with visit routes that takes in all the highlights. It’s called “Monumental Haarlem”.

In addition to the day trip I mentioned above, there are other organized day trips to visit the windmills , as well as some of the famous villages around Amsterdam like Edam and Volendam.

In this itinerary, you will see that I am suggesting you to visit these places during your 5th day in Amsterdam.

However, you can totally opt for one of these for Day 4 and do something else on the last day.

For details and to book your day trip , simply click on the orange links below:

  • Visit the windmills of Zaanse Schans + 1h boat tour + Volendam + Marken .
  • Visit to Edam + Volendam + Marken + Zaanse Schans + cheese tasting .

Haarlem

Spending 5 days in Amsterdam gives you enough time to discover another really nice place close to the city: the Wateland villages.

These authentic and traditional villages are nicknamed ‘Waterland’ because they are crossed by canals and some are located on the seafront.

To make your life easier, you should purchase the “Waterland Day Ticket” for 10€ from the automatic ticket machines at Amsterdam central station. You can use it for all your bus journeys between Amsterdam and the villages.

You should also go to the information center located inside the station to get the bus route map and timetables.

Here are the 7 villages of Waterland that you can discover during the day:

  • Broek in Waterland, famous for its small wooden houses and its church ceiling painted with angels
  • Monninckendam where guests can visit the Waterland Museum and St. Nicholas Church
  • Marken: a pretty little island with a harbor and restaurants by the water.
  • Volendam: a very cute village, with a lot of small shops and restaurants towards the harbor.
  • Edam: a typical village, you will enjoy walking there to admire the beautiful houses.
  • Purmerend: you can skip that one, it’s much less traditional and not that interesting (it just looks like a regular small town)
  • Beemster: listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its polder, an artificial stretch of land claimed by draining water. Beemster Lake was drained from the 17th century using 43 water mills, a technical feat!

If you prefer to opt for an organized day trip , remember they all include a visit to the windmills of Zaanse Schans. So if you already visited the attraction yesterday or took an organized day trip, you don’t need to do it again.

Otherwise, here are the day trips I mentioned:

  • Visit of Volendam + Edam + windmills
  • Volendam + Marken + Zaanse Schans + 1h boat tour

Instead , you can go to Zandvoort, a seaside resort 30 minutes by train from Amsterdam. It’s perfect if you want to enjoy the beaches.

A bit further away (1h35 by car), you will also find the village of Giethoorn , known as the Venice of the North . This day trip needs to be booked here!

And if you’re going to Amsterdam between mid-March and mid-May , you should really visit Keukenhof park and its millions of tulips. Ticket with transport from Amsterdam needs to be booked  there.

Volendam

Since I had a very early flight home on the morning of my departure, I also tried out the Ibis Schiphol Amsterdam Airport situated 10 minutes from the airport (free shuttle). And I was pleasantly surprised: the rooms are modern, comfortable, and you can’t hear the planes at all.

If you plan to visit Amsterdam for 5 days with children, you will be happy to learn that Amsterdam is the perfect city to discover with your family.

Everything is easily accessible on foot and if the kids are tired, you can always take the tram to get around.

Regarding this itinerary, apart from the Amsterdam Dungeon which isn’t suitable for young children, this whole itinerary can be enjoyed with your kids.

Here are the best things to do during a 5-day stay in Amsterdam with your family:

  • The flower market
  • The Jordaan district
  • The Vondelpark
  • A Canal cruise
  • Amsterdam Zoo

  • The day trip to see the windmills!

You can also add visits especially for them:

  • Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum

So, what are you waiting for to book your boat trip on Amsterdam’s canals? 😊

amsterdam 5 day tour package

Planning out the perfect 4 to 5 days in Amsterdam itinerary is a highlight of mapping out a trip to Western or Northern Europe. As one of the most visited cities in Europe, it’s no surprise why – from its picturesque canals to some of the world’s best museums, restaurants, a vibrant history, and a laid-back, open-minded attitude.

Amsterdam is truly a city where classic and modern combine to make such an atmospheric city and where wandering the streets and passing the many bicycles of the city while catching scents of stroopwafel is a joy.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Amsterdam?

While many people just visit Amsterdam for a weekend getaway, I think that it’s a disservice to the city as there’s an abundance of things to explore and places to visit beyond a 2-day trip.

Even just extending your trip to 3 days in Amsterdam, you’ll have the opportunity to go a bit beyond the typical tourist path and route, giving a more holistic experience of this spirited Dutch city.

4 days is even more ideal as you’ll have more time to do the city justice, exploring further into local culture and getting to know the city off the beaten path.

Finally, if you have the opportunity and time to spend 5 days, you’re in for a treat. While 4 days in Amsterdam is sufficient to explore the city to the best extent, it is still very much a touristy city with a different pace of life compared to the rest of the country.

With 5 whole days, you’ll have the time to visit a neighboring city such as Utrecht or Rotterdam by just a short train journey, giving a full taste of the country.

And if you’re wondering the best time to visit Amsterdam, keep in mind that it is a thriving city that attracts visitors year-round. For the best weather (and the most crowds) the summer months can be ideal. However, if you want to see the city decked out for the holidays, visiting in the winter can be a great choice, as well.

Getting To & Around Amsterdam

As one of the largest airports globally, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport receives flights from both European and international destinations, serving as the point of arrival for air travel.

From the airport to the city center, Schiphol Airport is just 17 km away from Amsterdam Centraal Train Station and can be easily reached by direct train transport in just around 15 minutes with frequent train services. There are also shuttle buses from the airport.

If you’re planning on visiting other destinations in the country, Amsterdam Centraal Train Station has frequent connections to most cities as well as train services to other European destinations, with high-speed rail such as Eurostar. You can find trains to Amsterdam from cities like Paris , London , Brussels and more. You can view schedules here .

Another option if you’re looking to save money and pass on train transportation, is to take a bus, as there are convenient and affordable bus transportation options throughout the Netherlands along with bus transport to other nearby countries.

Flixbus is the best option, as prices are low and buses are comfortable and on time, journeys can be booked here.

As for getting around the city, the center is quite walkable and a pleasure to explore by foot, getting lost in the nooks and crannies.

For a local mode of transport, Amsterdam is the bike capital of the world, and wandering the city by bike is the perfect way to experience the city like a local, albeit with a touch of courage!

If you prefer public transportation or are keen to explore outside of the city center, there is comprehensive and efficient public transportation consisting of buses, trams, metro, and ferries.

Single tickets for public transportation can be purchased from ticket vending machines in the city, but to save money, I suggest getting an OV-chipkaart card , which is a rechargeable card that can be used on all modes of public transportation.

You can also purchase an Amsterdam City Card that includes entry to many attractions and public transport if you plan on visiting a number of sights in the city and can keep your costs down in Amsterdam .

There is much more than its infamous Red Light District and this itinerary will highlight that.

The first day of this itinerary focuses on some of the main attractions in central Amsterdam. You can take a walking tour to learn more about the history of the city with a tour guide.

There’s no better place to start your day than in Dam Square. Quite literally in the center of the city, Dam Square positions you in the ideal spot to begin exploring.

Dam Square is a historical and cultural landmark of Amsterdam that has been an important gathering place for locals and visitors for centuries, with important monuments encircling the square such as the Royal Palace, the National Monument, and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church).

Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis)

Of all the monuments surrounding Dam Square, the monument most worth visiting is the Royal Palace of Amsterdam.

The palace was built in the 17th century as a city hall, later becoming a royal palace in the early 19th century, and now serves as a venue for state visits, official receptions, and is open for visitors to witness this impressive example of Dutch classical architecture and its rich history and culture.

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam regularly hosts exhibitions, showcasing a variety of art, history, and culture. These exhibitions provide a unique perspective on different aspects of Dutch history and society, making it a great starting point for your time in Amsterdam.

The Royal Palace is open to visitors almost every day of the year, except for some holidays and official events. The opening hours can vary depending on the season, so it’s important to check the opening hours beforehand. You can book tickets here .

Wander Amsterdam Canals

Wandering the canals of Amsterdam is an essential part of any travel itinerary in this beautiful city. The picturesque waterways, lined with charming buildings and quaint bridges offer a unique perspective on the city’s history and culture and why it’s such a popular and timeless destination.

A great spot to begin is The Singel Canal, which is one of the oldest canals that make up the network of canals in Amsterdam. Afterwards, make your way to The Brouwersgracht (Brewers’ Canal) to enjoy one of Amsterdam’s most scenic and picturesque places.

This is also the perfect time of day to sit at one of the quaint cafes lining the canalled streets to watch local life go by and enjoy a coffee or a local Dutch beer.

De Negen Straatjes (The Nine Streets District) & Stroopwafel

The Nine Streets District of Amsterdam is a charming neighborhood located in the heart of the city’s historic canal belt.

The district is named after the nine narrow streets that run through it, which are lined with a diverse range of shops, cafes, and restaurants, as well as historic buildings and picturesque canals.

The Nine Streets District is an ideal part of the city to take in local life, enjoy stunning surroundings, and enjoy the classic Dutch treat, stroopwafel, at the oldest bakery in the city, Hans Egstorf.

Day 2 – Canal Boat, Amsterdam Museums and Culture

Canal boat tour.

Day 2 will begin with a different perspective of the city than day 1, by heading out on a canal cruise.

By taking a canal boat tour of the city, you’ll be treated to a unique perspective on the city’s history and architecture, as well as the chance to see some of the city’s most famous landmarks from a different angle.

During a canal tour, you can expect to see some of Amsterdam’s most iconic sights as well as the charming canal houses that line the waterways and enjoy some unique views of the city.

You’ll also pass under historic bridges and through picturesque neighborhoods, providing a unique glimpse into the city’s culture and daily life. Some options include this 1-hour cruise or this luxury option.

Canal Boat in Amsterdam

Albert Cuyp Market

After seeing the city by boat, make your way to the vibrant De Pijp neighborhood to one of the most popular open-air street markets in Amsterdam, Albert Cuypmarkt.

Since the 19th century, Albert Cuypmarkt has been the go-to spot for locals and tourists searching for a wide variety of goods for sale, including fresh produce, clothing, and souvenirs. It also operates as a beautiful flower market where you can purchase iconic tulips in season.

The Albert Cuypmarkt is the perfect spot to enjoy the lively local atmosphere of the city, taste some classic Dutch food, and pick up a souvenir from your time in Amsterdam.

Rijksmuseum

Amsterdam is a city steeped in history, art, and culture and the best way to learn more about this part of Amsterdam and Dutch history/art is to spend time at one of the most popular museums in the city.

Because of the density the top museums in the city, I suggest dedicating a large portion of your day to time at the museum(s) of your choice.

The most visited museum in the Netherlands, The Rijksmuseum, is the largest museum of art and history in the country.

Its extensive collection includes over one million objects, spanning over 800 years of Dutch art and history, and is known for its famous works of art from the Dutch Golden Age, including Rembrandt’s Night Watch and Vermeer’s Milkmaid. You can book tickets in advance here or organise a guided tour here .

Rijksmuseum

Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum is another wonderful option for a museum visit in Amsterdam. The Van Gogh Museum is a museum dedicated to the life and works of the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh.

The museum features the largest collection of his paintings and drawings in the world, as well as a deeper look into the life of Vincent Van Gogh. You can book tickets in advance here or organise a guided tour here .

And if you want an experience away from the art museums, then consider spending sometime relaxing in the vast Museumplein Park near both the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum or heading over to the nearby Heineken Brewery.

In the latter spot, you can book the Heineken Experience where you can learn all about the history of this popular beer and how it’s brewed.

Day 3 – Dutch Food, Bike Tour & Green Amsterdam

Vondelpark & dutch pancakes.

There are plenty of things to do in Amsterdam in 3 days so you certainly won’t be wanting for activities.

A great way to begin day 3 is by enjoying a breakfast made up of poffertjes, which are small and delicious traditional pancakes served with various tasty toppings. A great location is The Pancake Club, a local restaurant near Vondelpark, the next stop on your itinerary.

Vondelpark is a beautiful public park located in the heart of the city, named after the famous poet Joost van den Vondel. The park covers over 47 hectares and is easily one of the most popular outdoor spots in all of Amsterdam.

Known for its beautiful gardens, ponds, and winding paths, Vondelpark is also a popular spot for picnics, concerts, and outdoor festivals during the summer months.

Whether you’re looking to get away from the crowd, spend time biking, or take an opportunity to enjoy a serene time in nature, Vondelpark is a brilliant addition to any Amsterdam itinerary.

Vondelpark

Bike Tour or Food Tour

The next stop will either be exploring the city by bicycle tour, or diving deeper into the taste of the local cuisine with a food tour.

Bike tours are a popular way to explore Amsterdam and experience the city like a local. The city is renowned for its bike-friendly infrastructure, with over 800,000 bicycles in the city, and numerous dedicated bike lanes and paths.

There are many different bike tour operators, offering a range of tours to suit your interests.

Some tours focus on the city’s famous landmarks and attractions, while others explore lesser-known neighborhoods and hidden gems. Tours often also include stops at local markets, cafes, and other points of interest. Some of the best options include this 3-hour bike tour or this half-day tour .

Food tours are a great way to explore the city’s culinary scene and sample its diverse range of cuisines. The city is home to a vibrant food culture, with a mix of traditional Dutch dishes and international flavors creating a unique cuisine of Amsterdam.

You’ll find different food tour operators, offering a variety of experiences to suit your interests. Some tours focus on street food, while others visit local markets and food halls.

Tours often also include stops at speciality shops and restaurants giving an insight into Dutch history, and somewhere visitors can sample traditional dishes, such as stroopwafels, herring, and bitterballen. Some of the best-rated options include this food walking tour and this 3-hour tour .

Anne Frank House

In the Jordaan neighborhood, you’ll find one of the most popular attractions in Amsterdam and the Netherlands, the Anne Frank House, a museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Anne Frank, the famous young Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis during World War II.

During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the museum with exhibits on Anne’s life and legacy, as well as an immersive experience through the secret annex where Anne and her family lived for over two years, which offers a comprehensive look into the harrowing experiences of the Frank family and other victims of the Holocaust.

The Anne Frank House Museum is open every day of the year, except for Yom Kippur and King’s Day, with opening hours varying depending on the season. You can also take a Jewish history walking tour before visiting the Anne Frank House.

Anne Frank House

Day 4 – Keukenhof Park or Zaanse Schans

If you’re seeing Amsterdam in 4 days, the is is the ideal point to head out of the city to an area near the capital to explore further into the country and Dutch culture.

Keukenhof Park

Few things are more synonymous with the Netherlands than the humble yet colorful tulip flower, and there’s no better place to witness these than at Keukenhof Park.

Also known as the Garden of Europe, Keukenhof Park is a world-famous flower garden located in Lisse, about 40 minutes outside of Amsterdam. The park is home to over 7 million tulips, daffodils, and other flowers, making it one of the largest flower gardens in the world.

During a visit, you can wander through the colorful gardens, admire the floral displays, and learn about the history and cultivation of tulips, the Netherlands’ number one export.

The most convenient way to reach Keukenhof Park is by direct shuttle transport from various points in the city with different bus companies depending on your location in the city. You can book transfers here .

Ticket costs for Keukenhof Park can vary depending on how you arrive, and it is highly recommended to book tickets in advance here .

Unfortunately, tulip season is quite short in the Netherlands, alas Keukenhof Park is only open for a short period each year, typically from late March to mid-May, when the flowers are in bloom.

Keukenhof Park

Zaanse Schans

If you’re visiting out of tulip season, another spot worth visiting outside of the city is Zaanse Schans. Zaanse Schans is a historic neighborhood located in the town of Zaandam, just outside the city.

The neighborhood is known for its well-preserved 18th and 19th-century buildings, including classic wooden houses, windmills, and workshops.

During a visit to Zaanse Schans, you will have the opportunity to explore the neighborhood and learn about traditional crafts such as cheese-making, clog-making, and chocolate-making.

In the area you’ll also find plenty of tulips if you visit in season, making it a great day trip option if you’re keen to see the tulips during your trip but prefer to bypass the high admission cost to Keukenhof Park.

To reach Zaanse Schans, take a 20-minute train from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Koog-Zaandijk Station. From there, you can walk or take the bus to Zaanse Schans for around another 10 minutes. There are also organised day tours available .

Day 5 – Utrecht

If you’re seeing Amsterdam in 5 days, I suggest spending the 5th and final day of your itinerary in the nearby town of Utrecht . Alternatively, you could also easily do a day trip to a place like nearby Haarlem or Gouda if it suits.

Once the most important city in the Netherlands, Utrecht is an important historic city, located approximately 30 minutes south of Amsterdam, known for its beautiful canals, charming tree-lined streets, and rich cultural heritage.

Like Amsterdam, Utrecht is full of canals but without the hordes of tourists stuffing in to catch a picture. This makes Utrecht the perfect day trip from Amsterdam, offering the chance to experience such an idyllic, medieval university city that gives the feeling that you’ve fallen back in time into a fairytale.

Full of green parks, friendly locals, and delicious food and drink finds, Utrecht will only make you wish that you had more time to spend in this welcoming and warm alternative to Amsterdam.

While in Utrecht, make sure to visit the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, the Rietveld Schröder House (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and wander around the enchanting medieval city center while indulging in the most deliciously fresh Dutch fries from Frietwinkel, a local Utrecht staple.

Reaching Utrecht from Amsterdam is extremely quick and convenient. Trains run from Amsterdam Centraal to Utrecht Centraal (The Netherlands’ largest train station) just about every 10 minutes, with a journey time of 20-30 minutes depending on the train. You can book trains here .

5 perfect days in Amsterdam

Maria Kirsten Adelmann

The Netherlands isn’t all tulips, windmills, and weed shops. With five days in Amsterdam you’ll go beyond the basics and see some of this capital city’s hidden delights. Yes, of course you’ll wander those iconic canals, stroll through street markets, and marvel at van Goghs, but you’ll also see street art in an abandoned shipyard and a tiny Catholic Church in the eaves of a 17th-century canal house.

To keep your energy up, we’ve built in downtime that does double duty as sightseeing (think: a beer break beside a classic wooden windmill). We’ve also organized days based on location, so you don’t have to trek back and forth across the city. Plus, we’ve consulted Tripadvisor reviews throughout, only featuring the stops that other travelers love.

City square with lots of people and horse-drawn carriages, and surrounded by historic buildings

MORNING: Wander medieval streets

Start your day off in the Centrum at De Koffieschenkerij, a sweet courtyard cafe on the grounds of Oude Kerk (Old Church), Amsterdam’s oldest building. Tripadvisor users rave about this cozy garden spot and its apple cake. This church is also the anchor point for the city’s Red Light District . If you’re curious, a good time to explore the neighborhood is post-coffee. You’ll see erotic gift shops, bars, “coffee shops” that sell cannabis, and sex workers in storefront windows (no photos allowed).

While you’re in the area, consider stopping by the Museum Our Lord in the Attic , a 17th-century townhouse with a Catholic church tucked up on the top floor. This bizarre-yet-beloved hidden gem won’t take more than an hour to explore.

Travelers say: “This museum is inherently interesting and a relic of hidden Catholic Amsterdam, but it has been so carefully and thoughtfully curated that it becomes as much about the history of the space over time, the history of domestic life in Amsterdam, and the history of tolerance too. The tour is self-guided with an easy-to-use audio guide. We loved it.” —@ MieageMB

AFTERNOON: A busy Dam Square and a very quiet courtyard

Continue south to Dam Square , grabbing lunch at Haring & Zo , a street-food kiosk selling a local staple: herring sandwich. (Don’t worry—even herring first-timers enjoy the cold snack.) If you have an hour to spare, the self-guided tour inside the massive Royal Palace lets you marvel at its opulent rooms stuffed with chandeliers and statues. The palace is still in use by the royal family, so it won’t hurt to check ahead to see if it’s open.

Make your way south on the pedestrian-only Kalverstraat . If the popular shopping street causes sensory overload, you’re in luck: Begijnhof , a quaint and peaceful medieval courtyard—one of the oldest in the city—offers a break from the retail bustle.

Cross over to Canal Ring and hit the Flower Market (Bloemenmarkt), which has been selling tulips and other blooms since the mid-1800s. Plus, it’s a hot spot for inexpensive souvenirs. (wooden tulip, anyone?).

AMSTERDAM CITY CENTER TOUR OPTIONS

  • If aimless wandering stresses you out or you just can’t deal with maps, this 2.5-hour walking tour is a genuinely great intro to the medieval city center, giving background on major attractions and lesser-known sites.
  • This colorful four-hour walking tour , led by a local, introduces you to Amsterdammers, from a sex worker to a coffee shop owner. You’ll weave through the Red Light District and beyond, with stops in a coffee shop (the cannabis kind), microbrewery, and a brown cafe for a slice of Dutch apple pie.
  • Fact: You can cover a lot more terrain on wheels, as this three-hour Bike Tour of Amsterdam’s Highlights and Hidden Gems proves. It takes you pretty much everywhere, from the Canal Ring all the way to Vondelpark, with a stop in Begijnhof in the city center.

Evening: Rijsttafeland live music

Now that you’ve pre-gamed with dessert, have dinner at Sampurna, a long-running Indonesian restaurant in the historic center. This is your chance to try a city staple—“rijsttafel,” a Dutch take on an Indonesian specialty. The slew of small seafood, meat, and veggie dishes is meant for sharing and balanced by a big plate of rice.

If you still have gas in the tank, it’s just a 10-minute walk or quick tram ride to lively Leidseplein . There are lots of after-hours options here, like The Waterhole Live Music Bar , which has all the good vibes necessary for a night out. Plus, Dutch drinks are flowing, including local beer brands like Bavaria and “jenever,” gin with a hint of juniper.

Museum reflected in pool of water flanked by trees

MORNING: A world-renowned Golden Age gallery

Kick off your day at the palatial Rijksmuseum , the national museum of the Netherlands. Aim to get there right at 9 a.m. when it opens to head off the crowds. (You may want to pre-book a timed ticket online, especially in the summer.) The Gallery of Honour gets downright mobbed, so go here first to admire the famed 17th-century Golden Age paintings from the likes of Vermeer and Rembrandt; don’t miss Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch,” which has its own gallery. Once you’ve taken care of the highlights, keep exploring—even after three hours, there’s no end in sight.

Travelers say: “Outside, the sheer majesty of the building is impressive. Inside, be prepared to be blown away by gallery after gallery, floor after floor of art, culture, and history. Jaw dropping.” —@ String W

RIJKSMUSEUM TOUR OPTIONS

  • Pre-download the free Rijksmuseum app to your phone. It’s an excellent tool with a bunch of free audio tours, including one of the museum’s highlights and another for the Gallery of Honour specifically. BYOH (headphones, that is)—but if you forget, you can buy a cheap pair near the entrance.
  • Does looking at paintings make you go huh ? This two-hour guided tour of the Rijks makes masterpieces accessible, giving the backstory to the museum’s peak pieces.
  • If a day of museums overwhelms you, the 5.5-hour Rijksmuseum & Van Gogh Museum Guided Tour takes care of everything, including entry into both museums and a guided tour of their most important works.

AFTERNOON: Van Gogh’s masterpieces

Grab lunch at one of the food trucks on Museumplein or, if you want to rest your feet a little longer, The Burger Room , an emerald-accented, Wizard of Oz-themed restaurant around the corner. (This eatery even has its own mini-museum downstairs complete with ruby-slipper replicas.)

Refueled and ready for more, cross the street to the van Gogh Museum , which holds the largest collection of the famed artist’s work. The museum is well laid out, walking you chronologically through van Gogh’s life and art. (Spring the few extra euros for an audio guide.) Special exhibits downstairs are also worth a look. Tickets sell out for this one, so be sure to book your timed entry in advance.

EVENING: A walk in the park and an acoustic experience

Once you’ve been thoroughly impressed by Post-Impressionism, take the five-minute jaunt to Vondelpark , the city’s largest park. Walk (or bike) the tree-lined lanes, passing waterways, outdoor cafes, playgrounds, sunbathers, and an open-air theater.

Cut out of the park for dinner at De Wijnkaart , which serves classy yet hearty meals paired with Eastern European wines. Bonus: it’s just a five-minute to walk your next stop, The Royal Concertgebouw , said to have some of the best acoustics in the world. (Maybe that’s why Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Igor Stravinsky have graced its grand Main Hall.) Orchestral performances, cello concertos and other events are going on here pretty much every night of the week, generally at 8:15 p.m. Book tickets ahead.

Worthy detours along the way

amsterdam 5 day tour package

MORNING: A quintessential canal stroll

Spend your morning exploring yet another 17th-century Dutch masterpiece: the UNESCO-listed Canal Ring . Stroll through the iconic Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) where boutique shops line narrow streets that open onto those endlessly photo-worthy Amsterdam canals. Then mosey into the more residential (but just as charming) Jordaan neighborhood. Don’t bother looking at your map—just wander from one impossibly cute block to the next.

CANAL RING TOUR OPTIONS

  • A ton of boat tours leave from outside of Centraal Station , offering a different view of the city via its historic canals (plus a great chance to rest your feet). Tours depart throughout the day; most are an hour long with audio or guide commentary.
  • The Canal Cruise by Captain Jack is a traveler favorite and a definite step up from your typical Centraal Station boat tour. Guides are personable and enthusiastic, and boats glide past a near- ridiculous number of sights in just 90 minutes. An added perk? You can chill out on a cushioned seat, snack on cheese, and sip a beer (all included).
  • You’ll get a true taste of the city—from Gouda to licorice—with the Jordaan District Small-Group Food Walking Tour . On this 3.5-hour guided walk, you’ll sample national favorites and learn about their place in Dutch history and culture.

AFTERNOON: The story of Anne Frank

For lunch, stop at the unassuming De Struisvogel , which sits in a canal house cellar and offers a well-priced fixed menu of Dutch dishes. After working your way through three delicious courses, head to the Anne Frank House to tour the Secret Annex where Anne Frank and her family hid for two years during World War II. Brace yourself—this is an emotional experience but well worth it according to some 60,000-plus Tripadvisor reviewers. This is one of the city's most visited sights, so you'll want to book timed tickets way in advance, as slots can fill up a month ahead. If you missed the chance to get tickets, the Anne Frank walking tour is a good backup plan, or just take a look at the house from the outside and continue exploring the endlessly wander-worthy Canal Ring.

Travelers say: “As a teacher I have taught about Anne Frank for many years, but nothing can prepare you for this experience. It is moving and such an important part of our history that we must keep alive. Everyone could feel the power of the history we were exploring. The mood was somber but also powerful as her message is still going strong.” —@ LilLondon

EVENING: Essential Dutch dining (and drinking)

Unwind after an intense visit to the Anne Frank House at Café Smalle , a classic, cozy, canal-side "brown cafe," a nickname that comes from the wall-to-wall wood paneling. For dinner, Winkel 43 is just a few minutes’ walk and serves up local favorites in an adorable gabled house. Try “bitterballen” (breaded meatballs) as an appetizer and don’t miss the homemade apple pie with whipped cream for dessert. Afterward, take the five-minute walk to Proeflokaal Arendsnest , a bar that’s equal parts charming and chill, with an astounding 50 Dutch craft beers on tap.

amsterdam 5 day tour package

MORNING: Delicious treats at an outdoor market

Amsterdam’s known for its outdoor markets. tart the day exploring its largest, Albert Cuyp Market . Located in the diverse De Pijp neighborhood, the market is packed with food stalls and souvenir shops. For breakfast, try poffertjes (Dutch pancakes) and definitely treat yourself to a warm stroopwafel from Rudi’s . We’d argue that this caramel-filled waffle cookie is second only to tulips as a symbol of the city. Bonus: the cylindrical cookie tins make for a nice souvenir.

Beer lovers should cut short their market shop and spend the morning on a Heineken Experience at the original Heineken brewery nearby. Though some travelers are wary of its big-business bent, most enjoy the self-guided tour— especially the beer at the end.

AMSTERDAM BEER TOUR OPTIONS

  • The Heineken Experience may feel a tad impersonal, but the VIP Tour is anything but. The 2.5-hour guided tour is the best way to see the brewery, giving you access to special areas and finishing with a private beer tasting.
  • If one brewery isn’t enough, the Brew Bus is an excellent option that stops at three craft breweries around the city, with three beer tastings at each.

AFTERNOON: Surinamese cuisine and Rembrandt’s studio

Whether you’ve spent the morning consuming sugar or beer, you’re probably ready for some more solid sustenance. Luckily for you, De Pijp is known for its cheap and delicious Surinamese cuisine. Try the roti at Spang Makandra (if Anthony Bourdain recommended it , we’re in). The eatery is mostly takeout, so if you can’t find a seat inside, no worries—make a little picnic of it in nearby Sarphatipark .

After lunch, hop on the metro or tram to the Rembrandt House Museum , where you’ll explore the famous artist’s one-time home and studio on a 60- to 90-minute self-guided tour. After, make your way toward Rembrandtplein (10-minute walk), one of Amsterdam’s liveliest squares. On the way, check out the flea market of Waterlooplein , where you can find everything from vintage clothing to records to bikes.

Travelers Say: “Rembrandt's house, built in the 1500's, is mind-bogglingly luxurious for its time…Rembrandt really enjoyed the finest things in life. The self-guided audio tour is excellent and easy to operate. Be prepared to climb narrow spiral staircases to get to the top. There is also a fine display of etchings, some by Rembrandt but most inspired by him.” —@ 638janisc

EVENING: Michelin-star dining

Rembrandtplein ’s bursting with dinner options, but if you’re game to splurge, we’d recommend Spectrum , a classy two-star Michelin restaurant with creative takes on Dutch and international dishes. Let’s just say the tasting menu is sublime. If you need a nightcap, the speakeasy-style Door74 has the kind of glam vibes that pair well with a Michelin meal.

amsterdam 5 day tour package

MORNING: Shipyard street art

Start your morning with a free 15-minute river cruise on the F4 ferry that runs every 15 minutes from behind Centraal Station to NDSM Wharf . Once an abandoned shipyard, the wharf has become a hangout for artists but still has that gritty, industrial feel. The area is full of cool street art, some of which you’ll find in STRAAT (the International Street Art Museum), a giant warehouse containing massive works.

Travelers say: “[The wharf] is absolutely fabulous for any fan of street art or imagination. This place is the real deal and you can enjoy both works on the actual street and the over 150 works by 130 plus artists from around the globe at the STRAAT. The works are all stunning, thought provoking, and lovingly displayed. After visiting the museum, you can explore the rest of area, which includes street art everywhere, and a massive collection of artist workshops in a neighboring warehouse.” —@ metrochica

AFTERNOON: Warehouse lunch and Maritime Museum

Hungry? Walk across the street to the Art City building, a former warehouse filled with artist studios. Tucked in the corner is the industrial-chic IJver . In the summer, the huge outdoor terrace is packed with people sipping beer or enjoying a sandwich or burger.

After lunch, ferry back to Central Staation. Now that you’ve had a taste of that Dutch seafaring life, head to The National Maritime Museum (aka Het Scheepvaartmuseum), less than 10 minutes by bus from Centraal Station. The building itself is impressive, with a massive, skylit atrium. And the full-size ship replica floating in the harbor is pretty cool, too.

EVENING: Wooden windmill with a side of beer

Stay on theme with fresh seafood from the museum-side food truck, open Wednesday through Saturday. Try the kibbeling—chunks of fish fried in batter—as a side. If you need a longer break, sit down for pizza at the nearby Restaurant Verena .

You can’t leave the Netherlands without seeing a windmill, can you? The brewery Brouwerij 't IJ (say that five times fast) is a 13-minute walk or quick bus ride away, and right next to the tallest wooden windmill in the country. Personally, we think sipping craft beer and snacking on cheese and sausage while admiring a massive wooden windmill is basically the most Amsterdam way to say farewell to the city.

DAY TRIP TOURS WITH WOODEN WINDMILLS:

  • This shockingly affordable day trip takes travelers outside of the city by bus, stopping at the wooden windmills of Zaanse Schans and other quintessentially Dutch destinations (cheese and clogs anyone?) in just 6.5 hours, so you’re back in Amsterdam by happy hour.
  • If you’re in the market for charm, this day trip delivers most of the above along with a truly lovely hour on water, floating past the thatched-roof houses of Giethoorn, a picture-perfect canal village.
  • Visiting during tulip season? We highly recommend this day-long jaunt , which combines a windmill photo op at Zaanse Schans with a visit to the Keukenhof Gardens , where a spectacular seven million—yes, million —flowers bloom each year.

Know Before You Go

With long days, sunny skies, and moderate temperatures, Amsterdam is excellent in the summer (June–August), though packed with people. You’ll find the city busy in April and May, too, as the rain lets up and the tulips bloom. If you can swing the off-season vacay time, September sees fewer tourists and cheaper hotel rates, yet the weather is still nice. Winter tends to be cold, wet, and gray, though in December, Christmas markets and ice-skating rinks all around the city brighten the mood.

Since Amsterdam is a major tourist destination, most of its attractions, shops, and restaurants are open seven days a week, though shops are occasionally closed on Sunday or may have shorter hours on Saturday, Sunday, and/or Monday.

Amsterdam has a healthy nightlife with clubs open until 3 or 4 a.m. and bars and (non-coffee) coffee shops open until 1 a.m., with later hours on weekends. Cafes tend to open around 8 or 9 a.m., while shops open between 10 a.m. and noon and close around 6 p.m., though chains in the city center are often open later.

Canal Ring : The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means when you stay here, you aren’t just near major attractions, you’re inside one. The Ambassade Hotel , split across multiple 17th-century canal houses in the Nine Streets, is loved by travelers thanks to its bright, boutique-style rooms and an almost ridiculously good location. The Toren , ever so slightly farther from the action in the Jordaan neighborhood, gets high ratings for its quiet, canal-side location and romantic decor.

Museum Quarter : Slightly outside the historic city center but right next to the major museums and Vondelpark, the Museum Quarter offers ritzy hotels and a quieter stay. The Conservatorium Hotel is a high-end option that’s historic on the outside, sleek and modern on the inside. Multiple food and drink options and a massive spa mean you don’t ever need to leave, though you’ll probably want to roll out of bed to see those van Goghs across the street.

Amsterdam-Oost : Amsterdam-Oost and other areas in the outer districts offer a range of hotels for a cheaper price—sometimes half the rate! While you won’t be within walking distance of major attractions, a hotel next to public transit is the next best thing. If saving money is key, The Social Hub Amsterdam City offers basic rooms, modern common areas, and a friendly vibe. While it’s geared toward younger travelers, it’s also a serious step up from your standard hostel. Plus, it’s just a three-minute walk from the metro, which takes you to Centraal Station in less than five minutes.

Public transportation : Amsterdam has an excellent public transit run by GVB with trams, metros, and buses throughout the city. Trams are particularly easy to navigate and stop at pretty much every major attraction. Just remember to check in and out as you enter and exit. If you plan to use public transit a lot, multi-day tickets quickly save you money (though everything is so close, you may just end up walking). The most frustrating thing about Amsterdam’s public transit system is that most of it shuts down after midnight, and the night bus system isn’t a good substitute.

By bike : Flat and compact, Amsterdam is easy to navigate by bike, which is exactly how most locals get around. That said, the bike lanes are busy, which can be intimidating to those not used to city cycling. Less confident riders might consider a city biking tour or a breezy ride around Vondelpark. Bike rentals are available throughout the city, including from most hotels.

By taxi : Taxis are expensive and slow in the city center—luckily, you probably won’t need them. The one time you might spring for it is after midnight when a lot of public transit lines stop running. Taxis are available at taxi stands or can be called ahead. Uber runs in Amsterdam and tends to be cheaper than standard taxi rates.

Airport transfers : The cheapest, easiest, and fastest way to get to the city center from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is to take the Intercity Direct train, which departs every 15 minutes during the day from the airport, arriving at Amsterdam Centraal in less than 15 minutes. Note that Dutch Railways (NS) runs the Intercity Direct train and you’ll need a different kind of ticket (GVB) to travel within the city. Special one-, two-, or three-day Amsterdam Travel Tickets include both kinds of transit. Another airport transfer option is the Amsterdam Airport Express bus 397, which departs every 10 minutes throughout the day. It’s more convenient if you are staying in or around Museumplein or Leidseplein.

5 days in Amsterdam: what to do and see?

Do you want  to go to  Amsterdam  for 5 days and are  wondering what to visit ?

You are in the right place!

To help you organize your days, I have therefore prepared  an itinerary for you to visit Amsterdam in 5 days.

I’ll start by giving you  good tips to avoid waiting  in front of the main tourist sites and then I’ll detail my program with  the visits to do for each day.

And to finish, I give you  my selection of the best hotels to stay in Amsterdam  according to your budget + some ideas of  cool activities for a family trip.

You will see, thanks to all my  advice and tips , you are sure to  make the most  of your  stay in Amsterdam!

So  what to do in Amsterdam in 5 days?

Table of Contents

Our advice to avoid queuing in Amsterdam

Visiting  a European capital  (in  Italy , in  Spain , in  Austria  ) often goes hand in hand with the world, seeing a lot of people (we are talking about tens of thousands of tourists per day!) and Amsterdam is no exception.

It is therefore not uncommon to see  a long queue  forming in front of  emblematic sites and museums  such as  the Royal Palace  or  the Rijksmuseum.

There’s nothing more infuriating than seeing your 5-day Amsterdam schedule upset because you’re hanging around for 2 hours at each location.

But I have good news: by following my advice, you can  avoid this inconvenience  and  visit all the must-sees  during your 5-day trip to Amsterdam.

I give you  the 3 best solutions to not waste time  below:

1. The Amsterdam Pass by Stromma

First choice  you have to  skip the queues and save money:  take  the Amsterdam Pass on  your 5-day Amsterdam itinerary!

Here is what you can visit with the Amsterdam Pass:

  • 2 city  museums : the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum
  • The canals on a cruise

And it’s not over, the Amsterdam Pass also includes the   transfer by train from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport  to Amsterdam Station (in the city center).

2. The City Card I Amsterdam

Always with the aim  of having quick access to sites  and  discounts on attractions and museums , you can also choose  the City Card I Amsterdam.

The latter also has the advantage  of including public transport . You can therefore  take the tram, metro and buses for free.

The City Card is only valid  for a period of 24h to 120h . You will therefore be able to benefit from its advantages throughout your 5-day stay in Amsterdam.

Once you have ordered  the card online , you will receive an email with instructions for  picking up the City Card on your arrival.

Here is what the City Card entitles you to:

  • Free admission to the city’s museums
  • A canal cruise
  • Discounts on certain attractions  such as the Dungeon or the Heineken Experience
  • 25% discounts  on bike rentals and in some restaurants
  • Unlimited use of public transport  for 5 days in Amsterdam.

3. Skip-the-line tickets to tourist attractions in Amsterdam

Finally, there is  another very practical solution  to avoid the queues and  see as many things as possible  during your 5-day Amsterdam tour:  buy skip-the-line tickets.

You will need to get  one for each visit  in order to have  priority entry . For the capital of the Netherlands, there are skip-the-line tickets for  most museums  and for  activities  (cruise, observation tower, etc.).

You can also  book all your day trips  around Amsterdam in advance.

You will see that there is  a huge choice of things to do  during these 5 days in Amsterdam!

To make a first selection, I have prepared for you the list of  those corresponding to the itinerary  that I have concocted for you.

You just have to   click on the links to reserve them.  I also give them to you as I go along in the article so that you can see which day it corresponds to:

  • The Royal Palace in Amsterdam
  • The dungeon
  • The Amsterdam Museum
  • Guided tour of the Red Light District
  • Private tour of the Jordaan district

Visit Amsterdam in 5 days: the best itinerary

After this practical information, it’s time to  discover my 5-day itinerary in Amsterdam.

The program is presented as follows:  one circuit per day  with all the places of interest not to be missed + indications of walking/public transport times +  1 map  to find your way around.

The schedule is based on the fact that you want  to leave for 5 full days in Amsterdam  and that you have taken  the Amsterdam Pass , the  City Card I Amsterdam  or  your skip-the-line tickets.

If you still have questions after reading this article  or if you need help organizing your vacation,  do not hesitate to ask me your questions in the section dedicated to comments , at the very end of the article.

So   what to visit in Amsterdam in 5 days?

Day 1: The Historic Center

amsterdam 5 day tour package

The visits of day 1:

A. Dam Square and the Royal Palace B. The Amsterdam Dungeon or Amsterdam Museum C. The Beguinage D. The Flower Market E. Zuiderkerk and Nieuwmarkt F. The Red Light District G. Oude Kerk

A. Dam Square and the Royal Palace of Amsterdam

I suggest you start this  5-day visit to Amsterdam  by  Dam Square.  In the heart of the historic center, it is  the main square  of the city.

It includes in particular:

  • The national monument
  • L’Eglise New Church
  • The Royal Palace in Amsterdam.

The visit of the latter is really  essential . You will be able to discover  the many rooms  of the  old town hall , later transformed into the  residence of the royal family  and then into a museum.

Period furniture , many  paintings and sculptures  have been preserved.

There’s always a long queue in front of the Royal Palace, so it’s best  to buy your skip-the-line tickets in advance . The price is the same as at the counter with the link I give you here and you will also have  an audio guide.

Please note that the Royal Palace is not included in the Amsterdam Pass or the City Card.

Tips for your Amsterdam itinerary: To reach Dam Square:

  • 10 minutes on foot from Central Station  via  Damrak Street or  Nieuwendijk  Street .
  • The tram  from anywhere in town.

Dam Square and the Royal Palace, 5 days in Amsterdam

B. The Amsterdam Dungeon or Amsterdam Museum

I then leave you  the choice of the program:

  • Discover the Amsterdam Dungeon,  a place where you can witness a  torture session , an  Inquisition trial  or a  witches’ stake . In the form of scenes with  actors in costumes , it is the ideal opportunity to  discover the dark history of the country.

You will see that during the  1h15  that the circuit lasts, it is easy to get  carried away in the atmosphere.  Spectators are also regularly invited to participate. I let you discover how…

The  City Card I Amsterdam  entitles you to a  25% reduction   on the entrance ticket.

Without this Pass, the entrance ticket must be  reserved by clicking here.

  • Visit the Amsterdam Museum.

A more classic visit to this museum dedicated to the  1000 years of history of the capital  of the Netherlands.  Modern and interactive  presentation , you will learn a lot.

Free admission with the City Card . Otherwise I recommend that you buy  your tickets by clicking here.

The Dungeon and Museum is a 5-minute walk from Dam Square.

Tips for your Amsterdam itinerary:

If you are not thrilled by these 2 proposals, in the surroundings of the square, you can also do the  Body Worlds  exhibition ,  Madame Tussauds  or  the Ripley’s museum.

Amsterdam Itinerary 5 days

C. The Beguinage

After this morning of indoor visits, the rest of the day will be devoted to a  walk in the city center.

Start by going to see one of the  oldest inner courtyards  in the city located  near the Dungeon or the  Amsterdam Museum.

It is called  “Le Béguinage”  because it previously housed a  community of women  called  the Béguines .

A small peculiarity of this absolutely charming place: you can see one of the  oldest wooden houses in Amsterdam  and one of the only ones still standing. This type of construction has indeed been banned in Amsterdam due to the risk of fire.

Begijnhof - Amsterdam itinerary

D. The Flower Market

Continue your walk by joining the banks of the canal where one of the most popular sites is located:  the famous flower market.

The Bloemenmarkt  brings together several super nice  little shops that sell the  emblematic flower  of the Netherlands,  the tulip.  They come  in all shapes  and colors: fresh, bulbs, carved in wood.

You can also take advantage of your visit to the flower market to  buy some souvenirs . We find the traditional  postcards and magnets  but also the most typical like the  famous wooden clogs.

I’m sure you’ll find at least a little something to bring back from your 5 day  trip to Amsterdam !

The flower market in Amsterdam itinerary

E. Zuiderkerk and Nieuwmarkt

Continue this circuit by  the Zuiderkerk church , located a  10-minute walk from the market  via the  Kloveniersburgwal canal.

If you are lucky, you may be able to  climb to the top of the bell tower  to contemplate the city. But the opening hours are a bit random because you must be accompanied by a guide to climb.

That doesn’t stop you from going to see her.

Not far from Zuiderkerk, there is  another well-known square  in the city:  the Nieuwmarkt square.  The small  castle with red shutters  built in its center is in fact  an old gateway . The ground floor houses a café-restaurant.

If you continue a little north, there is a  tiny Chinatown  with traditional  Asian grocery stores and shops.

Nieuwmarkt – 5 Day Amsterdam Itinerary

F. The Red Light District

We now come to the “caliente” part of the program!

If I say “Red Light District”,  does that mean anything to you? Come on, don’t pretend, everyone has already heard of this  emblematic district  of Amsterdam, known to be a  hotspot for prostitution.

It is here, behind the  windows with red fronts , that the  young ladies who offer their services  in all legality stand. To tell you, they are even subject to tax, like any employee.

You should also  avoid taking pictures of them  because it is forbidden and they are well “guarded”.

Guided tours  of the red light district  are organized every day to  discover the whole history of the place (without putting it into practice, of course! that’s only for you…). The one I recommend is also  available in French.

Red light district in Amsterdam

G. Old Church

Also in the Red Light District is  Amsterdam’s oldest church,  built in  the 1300s.

The  Oude Kerk  has a  pretty typical facade  with  red bricks  and  large stained glass windows.

If you have the  Amsterdam City Card , you can also  visit it for free , but otherwise it’s not worth paying the  €15 entrance ticket.

The interior of the church has been transformed to  accommodate contemporary exhibitions  which completely distorts the place. A bit of a shame if you want my opinion…

5 days in Amsterdam

Day 2: Best Things to Do on Day 2

Amsterdam itinerary - Day 2

The visits of day 2:

A. The Jordaan district B. The cheese museum C. The Anne Frank house D. Visiting a museum: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, MOCO or Stedelijk E. Vondelpark F. Canal cruise

A. The Jordaan District

After a good night’s sleep, I suggest you spend the morning in another  very typical neighborhood: the Jordaan.

Do not hesitate to  take a random stroll through  the alleys, along the canal. In particular, you can  admire the traditional houses  with red brick facades and  the church of Westerkerk,  the largest Protestant church in the country.

The Jordaan district is located  west of Dam Square.

Quartier Jordaan / Westerkerk

B. The Cheese Museum

Also worth seeing in the Jordaan:  the cheese museum.

This is a very good place to  taste all kinds of gouda , an excellent local cheese that can be found  flavored with pesto, chilli or truffle . The shop on the ground floor of the museum offers a wide selection and the tasting is free.

The  museum part , on the other hand, is  in the basement and  is a little poor with a small exhibition and some  explanations on the methods of producing cheese.

The Cheese Museum in Amsterdam - Amsterdam places to see

C. The Anne Frank House

Still in the Jordaan district, there is a  visit not to be missed during these 5 days Amsterdam itinerary, that of the Anne Frank house.

This is where the little girl wrote her  world-famous book , The  Diary of Anne Frank.

He tells  the story of his whole family , forced to hide in a part of this house to  escape the deportation of the Jews  during the Second World War.

The different  rooms of the house,  embellished with  photos, objects and extracts from the diary,  allow you to  immerse yourself in the living conditions  of the family at this very difficult time.

An essential piece of information to know to visit the Anne Frank House:  entrance tickets can be purchased ONLY online  and on the official website  by clicking on the following link.

80% of tickets are  put online 2 months in advance  and the rest are available in dribs and drabs every day from 9 a.m. These tickets go very quickly and  I advise you to book them as soon as possible.

The house is located across the canal from the cheese museum.

The Anne Frank House - Amsterdam things to do

D. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, MOCO or Stedelijk Museum

After having discovered all  the essentials of the Jordaan , it is time to  reach the museum district.

As you probably know, Amsterdam is home to  several world-famous museums . Most are  grouped around the Museumplein , which bears its name very well since it can be translated as  “museum square”.

To get there  from the Anne Frank House, you have 2 options:

  • On foot in 30 minutes by the canal
  • By tram in 20 minutes.

The most famous museum is undoubtedly  the Rijksmuseum.  It’s the biggest in town. You can admire a  very important collection of paintings  from the  Dutch Golden Age.

Among the must-see  masterpieces are:

  •  Vermeer’s  Milkmaid
  •  Rembrandt’s  Night Watch
  •  Van Gogh’s  Self-Portrait with a Gray Felt Hat .

Admission to the Rijksmuseum is included with the City Card I Amsterdam or  the Amsterdam Pass.  Otherwise, it is really imperative   to buy your skip-the-line tickets in advance for the Rijksmuseum by clicking here .

Depending on the time you have or your interests,  you can also visit:

  • The Van Gogh museum  dedicated to the famous Dutch painter, you can admire 200 of his paintings. Free admission with the City Card and the Amsterdam Pass. Otherwise, I can only advise you to  take a skip-the-line ticket here.
  • The MOCO  dedicated to contemporary works of art with an exhibition on Banksy. Free admission with the City Card and 10% with the Pass Amsterdam.
  • The Stedelijk Museum,  museum of contemporary art and design. Free admission with the City Card and 10% with the Amsterdam Pass.

Rijkmuseum - what to do Amsterdam

E. Vondelpark

To get some fresh air after these few hours at the museum, go and relax in Vondelpark.

The  city’s largest park  is a 5-minute walk from Museumplein.

The park has  several lakes , well-maintained paths for  walking or cycling , and  play areas  for children.

Tips for your Amsterdam itinerary: Would you rather  like a little pick-me-up  when leaving the museum?

Then you have to  visit the House of Bols Experience . And you won’t have to go far because it’s located in  a building next to the Museumplein.

The visit includes the discovery of the  manufacturing process  of the  oldest brand of spirits  in the world but ends above all with the  tasting of an excellent cocktail.

If I have inspired you, you can  book your tickets for the House of Bols by clicking here.

Vondelpark - what to see Amsterdam

F. Canal Cruise

We are coming to the  end of this second day . I suggest you conclude in style with another  essential activity  of this 5-day stay in Amsterdam:  a cruise on the canals.

Take a seat comfortably in the barges that roam the canals and  discover the architecture of the capital  from a new angle.

You will have the choice between  several types of cruises  with small variations in terms of duration, circuit and boat.

I have  selected 5  of the most popular for you.

You just have to  click on the links  to access the information and book them:

  • 75-minute cruise to discover the historic center + audioguide
  • 1-hour cruise with audio guide   to admire the facades of houses from the Dutch Golden Age
  • 1-hour cruise in a semi-open electric barge   to fully enjoy the view
  • 90-minute evening cruise   to enjoy the city lights
  • Luxury cruise with drinks and snacks included.

Tips for your Amsterdam itinerary: Note that if you have   taken the City Card I Amsterdam   or   the Amsterdam Pass , you are entitled to a free cruise.

Canal Cruise, Amsterdam itinerary

Day 3: Places of interest to visit in Amsterdam

Visit Amsterdam in 5 days: day 3

The visits of day 3:

A. The Albert Cuypmarkt B. Heineken Experience C. Magere Brug D. Museum visit or guided bike tour of Amsterdam E. A’DAM Lookout

A. Albert Cuypmarkt

Start the  third day  of your 5-day Amsterdam tour at  the Albert Cuypmarkt.

The  Amsterdam market  is one of the largest open air in Europe. In addition to the classic fruits and vegetables, there are  local products ,  food stalls  but also  flowers and souvenirs.

The market is  open from Monday to Saturday . It is located in the Pijp district.

B. Heineken Experience

Before the lunch break, go enjoy a small pint of beer at  the Heineken Experience , which is only  5 minutes from the market.

You will be able  to visit the former premises of the  famous company  ‘s brewery and discover its history as well as  the stages in the production of a beer.

At the end of the visit, you can  refresh your throat for free!

It is better  to book your tickets in advance here!

Heineken Experience Amsterdam - 1 week in Amsterdam

C. Magere Brug Bridge

End the morning with a photo break at the Magere Brug bridge.

Cinephiles and fans of the  James Bond saga  will not fail to recognize the bridge that appears in the film  “Diamonds are Forever”.

This bridge dates from the  17th century  and was originally  so narrow  that barely 2 people could cross it at the same time. Which earned him  the nickname Skinny Bridge  (“skinny bridge in French).

Since then, it has been widened twice to allow a few more people at a time and also opens to  allow barges to pass.

It is not exceptional but it is a historical element of the city of Amsterdam.

Magere-Brug-840x469-1

D. Museum or Guided Bike Tour of Amsterdam

In the afternoon,  I suggest you  continue to visit Amsterdam  in 5 days with  different options:

  • Visit a museum.

Among those located  near the Brug mage,  we can mention  the Hermitage Museum , the  Rembrandt House Museum  or  the Tropen Museum .

But as Amsterdam is not very large, you can also  easily return to the side of Museumplein  and visit the museums that you did not have time for yesterday.

  • Rent a bike  or take part in  a guided bike tour  to discover every corner of the city.

Amsterdam has many  cycle paths  that run absolutely all over the city. If the weather is nice, it can be really nice to take a little bike ride and immerse yourself in the local culture.

It is indeed the  favorite mode of transport of the inhabitants.  You will see that there are bikes everywhere!

Visit Amsterdam in 5 days – Bike tour

E. Holland / A’DAM Lookout

In the late afternoon, return to  Amsterdam Central Station.

At the back of the building,  take the sea shuttle  (free) which allows you to cross the river and will drop you off at  the Buiksloterweg quay .

From there, join in  5 minutes on foot  the next activity of the day:  This Is Holland.

This attraction allows you to  fly virtually over Holland  for about ten minutes. To complete the experience,  the seats move  and you can even smell the scent of tulips as you pass over the fields.

A reduction is offered with the City Card.

It is also possible to   book your tickets online by clicking here.

Next,  I suggest you conclude the day by climbing to the  top of the A’DAM Lookout.  From its  panoramic terrace,  there is an  unobstructed view  of the entire city.

For fun, you can even  experience the highest swing in Europe.

Admission to A’DAM Lookout is included in   the City Card Amsterdam.

Adam-Lookout - best things to do Amsterdam

Day 4: The Windmills of Zaanse Schans

After having discovered the majority of the main places of interest of the city, it is time to  continue this itinerary  of five days in Amsterdam by  a visit of the surroundings.

Today, I suggest you  go to Zaanse Schans,  a tourist site known for  its waterside mills.  The place is  so photogenic  that it is on all the postcards!

The place was certainly designed only for tourists with shops  selling cheese, clogs, souvenirs  (more expensive than in Amsterdam) but it is well done and  the facilities respect the traditional side.

On the site, there are also  2 small museums:  one on watchmaking (a specificity of the village) and the other dedicated to the mills and their functioning.

It is also possible to  visit the inside of the mills  for free with your Amsterdam Pass/City Card (5€ each otherwise) and to take  a mini cruise  to see them from another angle (also free with the Amsterdam Pass).

You have  several options to get to Zaanse Schans  from Amsterdam:

  • Take bus no. 391 or 891  from Central Station. There are about every 15 minutes.
  • Take the train  to Zaanse station (20 minutes journey) and walk 15 minutes to arrive at the mills.
  • Opt for a day trip  with transport and guide included.

This is  the excursion for you  (click on the link to book):

  • A 3-hour organized small-group tour  with guided tour / entry to the windmill / clog-making demonstration.

Zaanse-Schans-840x462-1

As the visit of the mills will surely not take you all day, I advise you to continue with a  visit to the village of Haarlem.

You can also  get there by train  but it is likely that you will first have to  take the train back to Amsterdam  (20 mins) and then  another train to Haarlem  (15 mins).

While preparing my visit to Amsterdam in 5 days, I hadn’t really heard of Haarlem and I’m quite surprised because the small town is really worth a visit.

It’s a very picturesque  place, with  beautiful brick houses ,  cobbled streets  and a  magnificent church  which I found particularly impressive. The entrance fee to visit it is only €2.50.

To make sure you don’t miss anything  of this charming locality, I advise you first to  go through the tourist office,  on the church square. For  50 cents , you can  buy the route to follow  with all the essentials. It is titled  “Monumental Haarlem”.

Tips for your Amsterdam itinerary: There are also  other excursions organized  to  visit the mills  and which also include the visit of  certain villages known as Edam or Volendam.

Haarlem-840x462-1

Day 5: Villages of Waterland

Visit Amsterdam in 5 days: Day 5

A 5-day Amsterdam itinerary  gives you time to discover another must-see near the city:  the villages of Waterland.

These authentic and traditional  villages are so nicknamed because they are  crossed by canals  and some are located by the sea.

A Pass , sold at the automatic terminals of Amsterdam  Central Station , allows  unlimited use of the bus  to travel between Amsterdam and all the villages.  It costs 10€.

I also advise you to  go to the information center  of the station to get  the map of the lines and the timetables.

Here is the list of the 7 Waterland villages  that you can discover during the day:

  • Broek in Waterland,  and its little wooden houses
  • Monninckendam  where you can visit the Waterlands Museum and Saint Nicholas Church
  • Marken:  a really pretty little island with its harbor and waterfront restaurants.
  • Volendam:  very cute village, with quite a few small shops and restaurants towards the harbour.
  • Edam:  a typical village where it is good to walk to admire the very beautiful houses.
  • Purmerend:  not mandatory as I found much less typical. It looks more like a small town.
  • Beemster:  Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its polder, an artificial stretch of land obtained by draining water. Lake Beemster was drained from the 17th century using 43 water mills, a technical feat.

Tips for your Amsterdam itinerary: If you prefer to take an organized excursion  instead , you should know that they all include a visit to the mills of Zaanse Schans. So if you have already visited the site yesterday or made an organized excursion, it is not necessary to do it again.

Instead , you can  go to Zandvoort,  a seaside resort 30 minutes by train from Amsterdam, ideal for  enjoying the beaches.

A little further (1h35 by car) you also have  the village of Giethoorn , nicknamed the  Venice of the North .  Book a day trip here!

Between mid-March and mid-May , I also recommend  visiting Keukenhof Park  and its millions of tulips.  Ticket with transport from Amsterdam on sale here!

Volendam-840x490-1

Overall the experience with this tour was lovely. It could be a little more organized but we still enjoyed our tour. The tour guides were great and helpful.

Beloved Europe Tour

Beloved Europe

Being a solo traveller is quite challenging. But I was pleased on the first day when I finally met the whole group, which consists of some from my home country. That made me feel so much at ease and confident. Pick up service at the airport were on time. Hotel though in Prague is a bit small, otherwise its clean and food at the restaurant and breakfast were all good. Hotel in Frankfurt seems new with its modern theme and spacious. Hotel in Amsterdam is a good size room too, clean and modern design. The bus is clean. All the drivers were good, specially Libor who is focused on his job. Our tour guide, Dioni was patient, pleasant and funny at times. The tours indicated in the itinerary were delivered. All the local tour guides, Marquina-Prague and Ellen-Amsterdam (not sure of this name), did well too. Overall, I had a good time. I didn't regret traveling alone with Europamundo! I will surely recommend Europamundo. I hope to travel with you again.

Holland & Belgium Tulip River Cruise (Amsterdam - Brussels - Amsterdam)

The tour was an absolute dream. The itinerary was perfect and the ports were great. What made it extra enjoyable was the crew upon the MS Cruisivista. Especially Jessica, our cruise director. Already looking at other river cruises we can go on next year and bringing my mom. Thank you!

Tulip Time Cruise 2024 Tour

Tulip Time Cruise 2024

The crew, ship and meals were all very good. There was an issue with the wording of one of the tours that I paid an additional amount for and I will take it up with Avalon. Also with the room description I paid extra for the wall to wall windows. It was useless to have done that. Most of the time we were right next to another boat, or to a wall and there was no way we would even keep the curtains opened.

Amsterdam to Bruges Bike & Barge - Comfort

I took the Bike and Barge trip from Amsterdam to Bruges. There was so much good about this trip - our guide, Simon, was excellent on all fronts. However, there were 24 cyclists and Simon had no assistant. That is totally unacceptable. It was only by luck that we had some very experienced cyclists on this tour who assisted Simon when needed: and there were numerous occasions.

What people love about amsterdam tours.

This is my second tour with Europamundo. The first was not all that great, but I was partially to blame so I decided to give them another shot. This tour includes stops at locations that are in line with what one would expect to see in the cities included. The transportation is decent and comfortable. Another family and I were asked if we would mind going on a different tour bus because of seating space. Once on the bus it was conducted entirely in Spanish and we had to remind the guide that there were English speakers on board. The city tours provide a lot of information and scenic memories. Make a note that it says on the last day the end of services is after breakfast. Actually, after the city tour in Paris the day before the end of the tour you will get dropped off by the L'ouvre under the premise of a "free day" and you are on your own to get back to your hotel. The accommodations are about a 7.5/10. In Amsterdam I was at the Radisson Blu. It was a nice full service hotel. Daily breakfast was good. Room was comfortable and clean. However, it is not located by anything but warehouse/industrial buildings. However, in Paris We stayed at the Residhome Aparthome in Nanterre. The location is great!!! Lots of restaurants and buzzing college town. However the accommodations were horrid. Specifically my room #209 had old peeling furniture and mildew on the roof and doorways. I took pics and will upload. The staff were French speaking only. Overall, the tour is good. Saw lots of sights and made lifetime memories. Europamundo needs to do a little more fine tuning to be sure the tours run a little more smoothly. I will say I would consider doing another tour with them. Considering the price the value matches what was paid.
Amazing Experience. I’d definitely recommend this trip?

Backpacking to Amsterdam for 5 days: The Complete Itinerary

amsterdam 5 day tour package

traveller Shreya

Amsterdam five day itinerary can come in handy for all the travellers looking for a getaway which includes a little bit of everything – historic museums, serene countryside, lively beaches and crazy nightlife. The city of canals, bikes and freedom will impress one and all.

In order to fully explore and connect with the city of freedom, it is essential that you chalk out a reasonable itinerary. A lot of travellers limit their stay in Amsterdam for 4 to 5 days (although the region needs more time to fully be explored). A good Amsterdam five day itinerary will ensure you get the best of this place in less than a week’s time.

Being multicultural and liberal, Amsterdam stands out from the other cities of Europe. It is sometimes referred to as the sin city owing to legalized prostitution and cannabis-friendly coffee shops. Wandering in the alleys of Amsterdam and understanding its progressive attitude would be an interesting aspect of your Amsterdam five day itinerary.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

This is how beautiful Amsterdam looks at night! Fondly known as Venice of the North, Amsterdam has over 100 kilometres of canals, with thousands of bridges built over them. The entire city was erected over the canals centuries ago, during the Dutch Golden Age. In the modern world, the canal cruises offer travellers a perspective of Amsterdam from the water.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary for Travelers

As a traveller, you must plan to spend at least 4 to 5 days in Amsterdam to cover the city properly. Amsterdam five day itinerary will help you explore the interesting aspects and parts in and around the region.

But first, let me throw some light on some essential details about Amsterdam.

Important Tidbits for Travelers Visiting Amsterdam

Here are some important points to be taken into consideration before you take off for your Amsterdam expedition.

Now that you’re acquainted with the basics of visiting Amsterdam for a trip, let’s move on to other details like budgeting, things to do, accommodation options, getting around, etc.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

The systematic planning of Amsterdam is an example for many cities. Saying that the city is aesthetic is an understatement. I had only seen picture-perfect photographs like these in magazines to date. Seeing them for real was wonderful!

What’s a Doable Budget for a Good Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary?

Unlike central and eastern European cities, Amsterdam is not a very budget-friendly travel destination. However, if you invest enough time in planning your trip well in advance, you will end up spending lesser than your fellow travellers.

You can find below the approximate expenditure for your Amsterdam five day itinerary. Since I travelled from India, I will be mentioning the budget in Indian rupees in addition to Euros.

These were the expenses I roughly incurred during my Amsterdam trip. Your budget could vary depending on the choices you make, and on what you’re looking out for –  a luxury trip or an economical one.

Day Wise Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

Travelling within and around the city of Amsterdam is fairly easy. The efficient public transport can get you anywhere around the city in less than an hour. You can follow your instinct and be creative with what you’d want to do on each day, or follow a pre-planned Amsterdam five day itinerary to make the most of your trip.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

Exploring the wonderful streets and alleys of Amsterdam is the best thing a backpacker can do. I could literally spend days doing so. Streets here are full of surprises – cosy cafes, coffee shops, unique boutiques, concept stores, and fashionable eateries.

Day 1 of Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

Arrive in Amsterdam early morning to utilize the day completely. The most important thing to do on arrival in Amsterdam is to buy the local transport tickets.

You can purchase the following right outside Amsterdam Central Station:

  • 48-hour GVB chip card to be used on the first two days,
  • Amsterdam 1-day region ticket for the third day,
  • Holland off-peak travel ticket for the fourth day.

Head to your hotel or hostel by the most convenient means of transport – bus, tram or on foot. Google Maps will prove to be your constant guide on your Amsterdam five day trip. Hence keep your phone charged at all times.

Your place of stay will allow you to check-in only post 2:00 pm in Amsterdam. However, you can leave your luggage with them on early arrival. I recommend you reach Amsterdam latest by 10:00 am, drop your bags at your place of stay, grab a quick bite and set off to blow your mind with the vibe of the beautiful city of Amsterdam.

Here are the places where you should be heading out on Day 1 itself –

The ever happening Dam Square is the first place to visit. You can observe trams crossing every second, hundreds of people on their bikes and travellers all over.

The National Monument stands on one side and the Royal Palace on the other. Spend some time enjoying the first glimpses of Amsterdam and then head to the magnificent Royal Palace.

Royal Palace Amsterdam

Marvel at the architecture, royal furnishings and artwork of the Royal Palace Amsterdam for a couple of hours. The ticket to the Royal Dutch Palace costs 10 euros and is available over the counter. But do check in advance if the Royal Palace is accepting visitors on the said day.

Since the palace is still operational for the Dutch Royal House, it is closed for visitors when in use by the royal family.

Free Walking Tour

Free Walking Tours are a very unique experience and can be found in all major cities of Europe. They start right at the foot of the National Monument in Amsterdam, located right opposite the Royal Palace.

You can spot a guide with a white and orange umbrella for walking tours, which start at multiple times of the day. The tour lasts for about 2 hours and will help you uncover the history of Amsterdam, introduce you to the coffee shops, and includes a tasting of the famous Dutch cheese.

Coffee Shops in Amsterdam

The number of cafes and eateries to choose from in Amsterdam is too many Remember that in the Netherlands, a “koffiehui” sells coffee, whereas a “coffee shop” is meant to sell soft drugs like cannabis and hashish. Don’t get confused.

You will walk through the narrow alleys of Amsterdam city centre and the popular areas of Begijnhof and the Red Light District.

Begijnhof was built in the 14 th century for single women who lived like nuns without taking monastic vows. It encloses a beautiful courtyard with houses around it. Single women live in these houses to date. Men are not permitted inside the Begijnhof before 10 am and post at 6 pm.

Red Light District

You might have heard a lot about the Red Light District but you have to see it to believe it. A walk through Red Light District looking at scantily clad women behind glass windows, posing for the onlookers with their own free will, is exactly why Amsterdam is called as the city of freedom.

Red Light District Amsterdam

It might feel rather awkward or immoral to visit the popular red-light district in Amsterdam. However, your opinions will be changed once you actually visit here. If you want, you can visit one of the strip shows or a museum of prostitution.

At the end of the walking tour, it is advisable to tip the guide anywhere between 5-10 euros if you’ve had some takeaways and learnings. The long walk is likely to take a toll on your body. It is advisable to take some rest before you proceed to the highlight of your Amsterdam five day itinerary – the canal cruise.

Canal Cruise

End your day with one of the many available and popular canal cruises. They are more or less the same and start every half hour at the pier on Damrak.

The one-hour canal cruise will take you through the famous and significant canals, showing you the highlights of Amsterdam from the water. The canal cruise is very different from the mainstream boat ride and is a must-do activity in the Amsterdam five day itinerary.

Day 2 of Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

Let me delve deeper into Dutch history, culture, and art on our second day, based on my Amsterdam five day itinerary. The first half of the day is planned at the Museum; Square in the legendary museums of Amsterdam – the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

Rijk Museum

The most popular museum in Amsterdam, the Rijk Museum takes you on a journey of the Dutch middle ages. It showcases artefacts and paintings from centuries ago. The museum has an entire section dedicated to the life and paintings of Rembrandt, a notable artist from the Dutch Golden Age.

If you are a history buff, you will appreciate the museum-like none other. The opening hours of the museum are 9 am, and it is best to reach by then to avoid the rush and queue. The tickets for the Rijk museum are priced at 17.50 euros and are available over the counter.

I Amsterdam Sign

Right outside the Rijksmuseum is the iconic ‘I Amsterdam’ sign which is a popular photography spot for all tourists. Pose for some whacky pictures around the ‘I Amsterdam’ sign and let the vibe of Amsterdam sink in. Be as crazy as the place is!

Van Gogh Museum

The masterpieces created by the world-famous Vincent van Gogh can be found at the contemporary Van Gogh museum. This museum will teach you a lot about the life of Vincent van Gogh and his paintings.

It is recommended that you buy the tickets online, priced at 18 euros. This is because only a specific number of people are allowed inside the museum at a particular time. You might have to come back disappointed if you don’t book in advance. You can spend about an hour or two at the Van Gogh Museum.

Van Gogh Museum

One of the most popular in the world, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam attracts visitors from every corner of the globe. Although this wonder was started in 1973, it has evolved and modernised a great deal over the years. Book tickets in advance.

Albert Cuyp Market

Time for some street food and street shopping. A must-try delicacy at the Albert Cuyp Market is the Stroopwafel – a kind of a waffle, but really thin and stuffed with caramel.

The culinary skills of the chefs making the Stroopwafel live is a treat to the eyes. You have a chance to use your bargaining skills all that you can, shopping for clothes, accessories, and souvenirs at the Albert Cuyp Market. You can also pick up some farm-fresh vegetables and fruits here.

A’DAM Lookout

A’DAM Lookout gives you an opportunity to admire the skyline of Amsterdam from across the river Ij. Take the free GVB ferry from Amsterdam Centraal station to the Ij-zijde to reach the Amsterdam Lookout Tower. It is a host to Europe’s highest swing ‘Over the Edge’, that’ll give you an adrenaline rush the first time you see it.

Go for it, a teeny bit of adventure on every trip makes it worthwhile. The panoramic view of the city of Amsterdam and beyond from the observation deck is spectacular. The deck has a café, good music, and bean bags to unwind and watch the fiery sunset from the top.

Day 3 of Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

If you are wondering about what would you do without a local transport ticket, that’s because something special is in store for the day. The third of the Amsterdam five day itinerary is going to be on a bike, cycling around town like a nomad. Rent a 24-hour bike at your hostel or one of the trusted bike rentals and take off on a biking adventure.

Cycling in Amsterdam

Also known as the cycling capital of the world, Amsterdam will leave you awe-struck with the multitude of population zipping around town on their bikes. Biking would be an essential component in your Amsterdam five day itinerary!

Anne Frank House

One of the most remembered figures from the dark times of German History is the young and bold Anne Frank. She was barely a teen when she started penning down the sufferings of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Her family went into hiding in an Amsterdam warehouse and stayed there for two years before being arrested by the Nazis in 1944.

This house is now converted into a museum dedicated to Anne Frank, and the tour of the museum takes you on a journey of her life. The tickets to the Anne Frank House priced at 10 euros, are to be purchased online and are sold out days in advance. A handful of tickets are available online on the day of a visit as well, but getting hold of them is quite a luck.

Mere footsteps away from the Anne Frank House are the biggest church in Amsterdam. Westerkerk is one of the oldest churches in the city, and the bell tower is of utmost significance ringing every full hour.

Westerkerk

Westerkerk church is open to visitors throughout the year. The church is shut on Sundays on account of a religious service. Furthermore, the Westerkerk tower, as can be seen in the picture, is only open in the months from April to October.

Enjoy the ride from Westerkerk to Vondelpark, biking through the well-known areas of the Nine Streets and Jordaan. You will find fashionable boutiques and cosy cafes to spend some quality time with yourself. Biking in the bustling city streets is different from biking in a park.

Vondelpark is massive and exploring it on a bike is better than on foot. The calm surroundings of Vondelparkmakes it a relaxing place for an afternoon siesta. Enjoy the evening in Vondelpark reading a book or watching the interesting street acts or just biking around the park savouring mother nature.

Get ready to uncover the history of prostitution in Amsterdam on foot in the Red Light District. It is natural to be a little apprehensive about walking around the Red Light District, but you’d be amazed at how professional and safely guarded the locality is.

If you are unsure of walking around the area alone, you can join a walking tour organized by various operators. They’re priced anywhere between 15-25 euros.

End your Red Light District experience at the world’s only museum of prostitution –the Red Light Secrets Museum. A sneak peeks into the life of people in the oldest profession in the world, would bring you so close to reality.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

Murals and paintings of the sort can be found all across Amsterdam. They depict the bohemian and hippie spirit in the city.

Day 4 of Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

After spending the first three days of your Amsterdam sojourn within the city, take the opportunity to explore the serene countryside of the greater Amsterdam region. A day trip to the windmills of Zaanse Schans, the old Holland fishing villages – Volendam and Marken, and the gorgeous golden Zandvoort beach is on the cards.

You must use your 1-day Amsterdan& Region travel ticket for the entire day, which is valid until 4 am the following morning.

ZaanseSchans

The windmill neighbourhood of ZaanseSchans is less than 30 minutes away by bus number 391, from the Amsterdam Centraal Station. Entry to one of these mills will cost you 4.50 euros. Walk or bike through the green meadows breathing in the fresh air and appreciating the view of picturesque windmills.

Amstredam Windmills

Zaanse Schans is a stone’s throw from Amsterdam. The first glimpse of it is no less than that of a fairy-tale land. The tiny oil, paper and colour mills dated back to the 18th century, and are operational to this day. Do plan an excursion to this fairyland .

Volendam and Marken

Embark on a journey taking you back in time, to the ancient Holland villages. Admire your ride through the traditional Dutch towns to reach Volendam in a direct bus from ZaanseSchans. Volendam is one of the popular fishing villages in the Netherlands with its harbour full of old ships.

The town is known for its restaurants serving seafood delicacies by the shore. Take a stroll around and board the next ferry to Marken which starts every half hour. Marken is much smaller than Volendam, but the adorable wooden houses make the visit worthwhile. It won’t take you more than 15 minutes to walk through the village on foot. Head back to Amsterdam Centraal by bus number 315, departing from Marken.

I am particularly fond of beaches and would suggest that you visit the nearest beach on any trip that you are pursuing. Zandvoort beach is nearly 30 minutes in a Sprinter from Amsterdam. A quiet evening on the beach, watching the waves is all that’s required after a long day in your Amsterdam five day itinerary.

For all the adventure freaks, the beach offers water sports activities including parasailing. Relax all you want before heading back to your base.

Zandvoort Beach Amsterdam

Zandvoort is a favourite among solo travellers, families, as well as adventurers. It always some great options for stay, in case you’re looking out to spend more than just a day here. There are also more places worth visiting around Zandvoort!

Day 5 of Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

The last of the Amsterdam five day itinerary is an interesting excursion south of Amsterdam to the beautiful tulip gardens and a miniature park. The Holland travel ticket is useful for the day since these destinations are farther away from Amsterdam.

A large open park with a colourful array of flowers will welcome you with open arms from the months of March to May. The best time to see the Dutch tulips bloom is from mid-April to mid-May, though they are seasonal and the exact dates change every year. It’ll take you a little more than an hour to get you to Keukenhof from Amsterdam by the intercity train.

Located in the heart of The Hague, is a theme park full of fascinating miniatures of everything Dutch – palaces, historical monuments, settlements, parks and more. Madurodam is home to models built to the scale of 1:25, and a range of other attractions and activities.

Entry tickets to Maduroram are available at a discount online. Hence, it is advisable that you buy them online prior to the day of the visit. If you have some time to spare, use it wisely uncovering the city of The Hague – home to the United Nation’s International Court of Justice.

Your Amsterdam five day itinerary ends here, departing to the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, or the nearest train station for your next destination.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

A miniature park that’s loved by kids and adults alike, Madurodam is truly one of a kind. It can be accessed both by car and by public transportation. Keep in mind that closing times vary depending on the time of the year and the day of the week.

Now that I’ve elaborated on a reasonable Amsterdam five day itinerary, I would like to dig a little deep into the history and overall culture of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is one of the most loved destinations in Europe. It is well known for its artistic heritage,  open culture, elaborate canal system and artistic heritage. Let’s dig into some of the important aspects of this beautiful city.

How did Amsterdam Come into Being?

About 750 years ago, existed a fishing village in Northern Europe. It developed into a city over a ‘dam’ in the river ‘Amstel’. Hence was born ‘Amsterdam’, a trade centre for Europe in the 14 th century. This led to people from across the world settle in Amsterdam and develop the city into a liberal society that it is today. Amsterdam has some of the most forward-thinking laws in the world today.

Amsterdam in the 21 st  Century

Amsterdam is one of the most culturally diverse and progressive cities in the world today. Tourism is an important component driving the economy of the Netherlands, with nearly 15 to 17 million tourists visiting Amsterdam yearly. Amsterdam is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination among the youth, solo travellers, and families. Reason being, that it boasts of enough places to keep people across various age groups entertained.

Getting to Amsterdam

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is located about 22 kilometres from the city centre. All major airlines fly to Amsterdam, connecting the city with almost all countries. To get to the main city from the airport, it is recommended that you take a direct train which takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs 5.40 euros. If you are travelling in a group, you can hire a cab for 39 euros.

Travellers reaching Amsterdam by train from other European cities would arrive at the Amsterdam Central Station located in the heart of the city, near Dam Square. Owing to the brilliant European rail network, trains are the fastest and cheapest mode of transport while backpacking across Europe.

Amsterdam Central Station

Amsterdam Central Station is truly beautiful. Every day, more than 200,000 people visit the station. Travelling by train is the best, and cheapest way to explore Europe. You can easily find more details on fares and schedules online.

The major cities closest to Amsterdam which can be reached in less than 5 hours include Paris, Brussels, London, Frankfurt, Cologne and Luxembourg City.

Accommodation in Amsterdam

Staying in Amsterdam can turn out to be an expensive affair during the peak tourist season from July to September. Travelling off-season and when the climate is favourable in the months of April and May is an ideal alternative. Hostels are available in plenty and prove to be cost-saving while travelling on a tight budget.

Recommended Hostels

Some of the best budget Hostels near Dam Square are:

For people who don’t mind splurging on accommodation and want to holiday luxuriously, there are good hotels located centrally near Dam Square.

Recommended Hotels near Dam Square

These are some of the hotels near the Dam Square:

Getting Around Amsterdam

Though the hostels are situated slightly away from the city centre, they are very well connected by trams and buses. The public transport ticket is valid to get to any place within Amsterdam using the extensive public transport network operated by GVB.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

Travelling around Amsterdam by metro is a must. It’s really comfortable, safe and convenient. It began operations in 1977 and continues to transfer large numbers of people within and to the outskirts of Amsterdam. Do try it out at least once .

My Amsterdam five day itinerary recommends purchasing a mix of the multi-day transport chip card, Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket, and the Holland Travel Ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions by Travelers Backpacking to Amsterdam

Q1. does amsterdam have enough eateries around what are the most popular cuisine and must-try dishes.

Amsterdam is filled with cafes and restaurants and you don’t need to worry about food at all. Enough vegetarian options are available as well. The Dutch cuisine is popular amongst locals, though overall the food in Amsterdam has a lot of foreign influence.

Must-try dishes include Stroopwafel, Bitterballen, Poffertjes, and Herring

Q2. Amsterdam is popular for its nightlife. Is it safe for solo travellers, including women, to visit clubs?

Amsterdam is safer than you can imagine. The people in the city are non-judgemental, and you’d find police protection almost everywhere, including the Red Light District. I have made no mention of nightlife in the itinerary to make it suitable for families with kids. However, most of the evenings are free in the Amsterdam five day itinerary. If you are travelling with a group of friends or even solo, you can party hard all night long in Amsterdam. Pub crawls are as crazy as they sound, and you can join one to make the most out of the place.

Q3. Are cannabis-friendly coffee shops trustworthy?

Cannabis is legal in Amsterdam, with strict regulations and taxes, and you can trust the coffee shops certified to sell them. The interesting fact is that most coffee shops have a menu on the display of their cannabis offerings. They have a diverse menu which also includes the Malana Cream Hash from Himachal Pradesh in India. Ensure that you don’t purchase it from roadside vendors, as the police keep a tight watch and you might end up in trouble.

Q4. Should you carry cash along at all times or does a card work?

Most places in Amsterdam accept cards for monetary transactions. However, it is best to keep some cash on hand just in case of an emergency. Euro is the only accepted currency in all of the Netherlands.

Amsterdam Five Day Itinerary

Exploring Amsterdam was a different experience altogether. It changed my views and thoughts on a lot of topics and really exposed me to a different way of thinking. That’s the thing about travel – it completely changes you as a person .

Amsterdam five day itinerary gives you an exhaustive understanding of the Dutch culture and traditions, popular sights, and the crazy nightlife. What’s in it for you to visit Amsterdam? Let’s just say, words don’t do justice to the place that it is. Plan a trip to Amsterdam to live the time of your life.

Trip Summary

amsterdam 5 day tour package

Easygoing, liberal Amsterdam is "different." Its citizens, bubbling along happily in their multiracial melting pot, are not so easily poured into the restrictive molds of trade and industry. More important, you can enjoy Amsterdam, its culture, history, and beauty, without stretching the limits of your credit cards. Few skyscrapers mar the clarity of the sky and the populace mostly walks or bikes from place to place. The historic center recalls Amsterdam's Golden Age as the command post of a vast trading network and colonial empire, when wealthy merchants constructed gabled residences along neatly laid-out canals. Visit Dam Square, Anne Frank House, Bloemenmarkt, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Canal Belt, Jordaan, Red Light District and so much more!

How to “Do” Amsterdam In 5 Days: The Ultimate Itinerary

Planning a short trip to Amsterdam? Want to know what to do in Amsterdam in 5 days? This 5 day  Amsterdam itinerary includes all best things to do for first-time visitors, as well as all the most popular hotspots and hidden gems.

Amsterdam in 5 days itinerary guide

Five days is actually an ideal amount of time to spend in Amsterdam, as you have a chance to explore the city’s best attractions and even enjoy a day trip in the countryside. Amsterdam may have the exuberance and attitude of a big city, but it has the manageability of a small town , and whether you’re a city person or not, it pretty much offers the best of both worlds.

I think most people don’t expect to find that many cool things to do in Amsterdam, making it all about red-light districts and coffee shops. Short story: it’s not. Amsterdam is sensational and there’s a lot more to the city. But you’ll see what I’m talking about!

Let’s get on to the itinerary, shall we?

BEST THINGS TO DO IN AMSTERDAM IN 5 DAYS

Day 1: arrival, canal tour, dam square.

Goedemorgen my friend! Welcome to Amsterdam, hope you had a smooth flight. Have you already exited customs and received your baggage? Great, you now have two options. The first one is to look for the cab service: this is the expensive option, as cab fare from the airport runs approximately €40 each way. A lot of money that can instead be spent on, I don’t know, food! Another option would be taking the train from the airport to Central Station. You don’t have to look hard, it is easy to see, and you can easily purchase tickets at a vending machine for around €4.50.

Once you’ve checked in at your hotel and dropped your bags, it’s time to start exploring.

A good way to orient yourself to the city is with a  canal tour , but make sure to choose a small boat, as you’ll be able to   travel through many small canals that the larger canal tour boats can’t access. You’ll learn some history and be able to see how the city is structured. Plus, the view from the water is really stunning! You can check out the specific tour I went on here , but you’ll find several operators just outside the Central Station.

Amsterdam in 5 days itinerary guide

Just a short walk from the Central Station is  Dam Square , built nearly 750 years ago. This is where the Amstel dam was located, which gave Amsterdam its name. The square is used for official events, festivals, concerts, and an occasional market and it’s a good place to hang out for a bit and watch the city go by. There’s much to explore in this area and the many streets leading away from the square can take you to every part of the city.

Walk down Warmoesstraat, one of Amsterdam’s oldest streets . After a couple of minutes, you’ll reach the beautiful Oude Kerk, a gothic church founded in the year 1213 that also has the distinction of being the oldest parish church and the oldest building in the city. This church is somehow symbolic of Amsterdam and is situated right in the middle of Amsterdam’s red-light district.

That’s right. A church. In the Red Light District. I suppose this is the right time to explore the district and see what the fuss is all about, right?

How-to-do-Amsterdam-in-5-days-Itinerary-11

In the daytime, the red light district ( “De Wallen” ) looks like any other part of Amsterdam, with nice buildings and lovely canals. At night is when the red lights turn on, and the entire neighborhood gets filled with tourists, gawking male teenagers and frat boys. I guess you need to see it with your own eyes — if anything, you will at least get a good laugh out of it!

It’s also a good place to start if you’re looking for  coffee shops . Whether or not it’s your scene, it’s still cool!

Day 2: Jordaan District, De 9 Straatjes, Flower Market

By now you will have probably noticed that Amsterdam is a scary city to be a pedestrian, so get your stretch on and hop on a bike! I rented mine from Black Bikes but there are tons of stores throughout the city.

amsterdam in 5 days

Bike your way to the lovely Jordaan District . If I lived in Amsterdam, this is where I would want to live. This residential area is probably the most missed attraction in Amsterdam and hardly any tourists enter this maze of restaurants, cafes, and stores. It’s very nice, so make sure to take your time to explore it.

In the Jordaan district, you’ll find a famous little house, famous for a tragic past and stories from only a few decades ago – the Anne Frank House . This is arguably Amsterdam’s most important and visited landmark. Lines are hours long, so I can’t stress enough to buy tickets online before your trip. It is amazing just to be there and acknowledge the power that this one girl’s story has over so many people that visit her house every year. It was a highly emotional and enlightening experience, at least to me.

Amsterdam in 5 days anne frank

After your visit, head to De 9 Straatjes (“the nine little streets”) . Here three major canals (Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Prinsengracht) divide the canal district into nine small but picturesque streets that are big on personality. The Nine Streets are a vintage lover’s paradise and are full of designer boutiques, art galleries, jewelry shops, specialty stores, and cozy cafés.

amsterdam in 5 days

Keep biking along the Singel until you find yourself between Koningsplein and Muntplein.

See those boats floating? That is the famous flower market. Here you will find various types of flowers and gardening equipment. Plenty of locals come here in the spring for tulips, roses, and in December for Christmas trees too. You can easily spend hours walking through the various stalls.

Amsterdam in 5 days itinerary flower market

Midway through the market, you may come upon the ‘De Kaaskelder’ (The Cheese Cellar) offering cheese tasting. If you are visiting Amsterdam, this is one of the best places to do some cheese tasting. Oh boy, you’re in for SUCH a treat.

A good way to end the day is to hit one of the many nightclubs in the Rembrandtplein area . The scene changes almost every night, so the best thing is just to walk around, listen to the music coming out of each place, and then decide. If it’s a Friday/Sunday night and you feel like dancing, you might want to know that the smaller clubs tend to have the greatest DJs.

Day 3: Museumsplein, Vonderlpark

On day 3 of your five days in Amsterdam, you’re going to explore the city’s art scene. Make your way to Museumsplein (trams 2 and 5 and 20 from Central Station), where the Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum will keep you occupied for hours. The order in which you visit them is up to you, but make sure to buy your entrance tickets for the Van Gogh museum before your trip – unless you don’t mind waiting in line for more than 3 hours. I mean it. Buy the tickets. Here’s link.

The Rijkmuseum collection spans a broad range of styles and periods with a focus on the glorious days of the Dutch Republic and displays masterpieces by the likes of Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Mondrian. In a sequence of 80 superb galleries, this museum tells you the story of 800 years of Dutch art. You’ll find many celebrated masterpieces, including The Night Watch by Rembrandt .  The exterior is also impressively photogenic and is often mentioned abroad as one of the most iconic buildings in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam in 5 days itinerary guide museums

Now, let’s hit up the Gogh ! Perhaps the most obvious must-see museum in Amsterdam.

This museum is entirely dedicated to Vincent van Gogh and carries many of his most famous paintings, like The Sun Flowers, The Self Portrait, and many many more. The museum also features some works of other impressionists & post-impressionists and lets visitors appreciate some of Van Gogh’s personal letters to his colleagues.

Amsterdam in 5 days itinerary van gogh museum

At the end of your day 3, walk to Vondelpark , the “green lung” of Amsterdam. This place is loved both by locals and tourists enjoying a sunny day, dog-walking, jogging, people-watching, or just lazing about in the grass. Just relax and soak up the sun!

Day 4: Zaanse Schans, Rembrandthuis, Magere Brug

A visit to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without visiting the world-famous windmills. Start your day with a trip to the famous Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum where the 18th and 19th centuries are brought back to life in The Netherlands. To reach Zaanse Schans, head to the Central Station, take the train to Uitgeest (€6), and get off at the fourth stop Koog-Zaandijk. You will arrive in about 15 minutes. You can also take the bus 391 and in 40 minutes you will arrive at your destination.

For a detailed description of this place, check out this article.

Zaanse Schans Day Trip

After lunch — does cheese & chocolate count as lunch? — make our way back to the city.

Just a short walk from Amsterdam’s Central Station (or a couple of stops with lines 9 or 14) is the picturesque Rembrandthuis . This museum lets you peek inside the life of the famous painter and art dealer. As was common at the time, Rembrandt used his home as his office, and buyers met in his living room to purchase paintings that are now priceless treasures displayed all around the world.

How-to-do-Amsterdam-in-5-days-Itinerary-9

Continue walking south along the canal’s west side and you’ll soon reach a fascinating bridge between Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, the  Magere Brug . This is one of Amsterdam’s most famous bridges, and one of the most lovely I might add .

Did you know this wooden bridge before 1871 was once so narrow that it was hard for two pedestrians to pass each other?

Amsterdam in 5 days itinerary guide

Toast an exciting and busy day of intensive sightseeing and art-watching with a drink at a cocktail bar or a refreshing Dutch beer. When your stomach starts talking, just take a walk and you’ll find more than enough restaurants to choose from.

Day 5: Doei-doei Amsterdam !

There’s no better way to spend your last morning in Amsterdam than by taking in the canal lifestyle and pulling up a chair at a cute café.

It’s now time to say goodbye to this wonderful slice of the world. I hope you enjoyed your time in Amsterdam – although I know that you did!
