Although you can wander around yourself, a guided tour really is the best way to see this place. Then you get to learn so much more about this ancient church-turned-mosque-turned-museum. It’s all of those in one.

I think this ‘Skip-the-Queue Guided Tour’ is fantastically well organised. It gets you straight into the magnificent monument without having to spend precious time waiting around to get in. This is perfect if you’ve only got a couple of days in Istanbul.

A local English-speaking guide will tell you everything you need to know about the history and architecture in just an hour. You’ll also learn a little more about the history of the Old City to kick off your trip to Turkey. Also, this is a very cheap Istanbul guided tour too – bonus!

Topkapi Palace and Harem: 3-hour tour with admission ticket

topkapi palace tour

If there’s one attraction that you need a guided tour for, it’s Topkapi Palace. The massive palace is located on a vast complex that goes on and on. It’s so sprawling that it can get a little confusing to explore without a guide.

The 3-hour Topkapi Palace and Harem tour is great as it teaches you a lot about the fascinating Ottoman Empire. You’ll get a chance to see all the different quarters of the palace, as well as the infamous harem. The palace terraces also had some epic views over the Golden Horn. It’s a great spot to take pictures.

If you’re a bit of a culture vulture and you want to learn more about Istanbul’s history then this is the tour for you. The Topkapi Palace entrance fee is included in this.

Istanbul: Food & Culture Tour

food tour istanbul

For me, Istanbul is even more magical and alluring in the evenings. It’s a city that really comes alive at night with so much to see and do. Well, this walking tour is ideal to soak in the evening ambience. You’ll also learn a little more about the history of the city from your local guide.

And don’t worry, you’re not walking for the entire 5 hours! This excellent night tour in Istanbul also includes a number of food tastings. I got the chance to try local delicacies from four different food vendors during the walk between Sultanahmet and Galata. The baklava was probably one of the best I’ve ever tasted.

You can’t beat a walking tour, especially when food’s involved. Just make sure you arrive hungry because you’re gonna eat. A lot.

Art of Turkish ‘Ebru’ marbling workshop in Istanbul

ebru tour istanbul

Want to try one of the more unusual tours in Istanbul? You can learn all about the art form of Turkish paper marbling known as ‘Ebru’ in this unique 2 hour Istanbul tour. I did this one myself so you can learn all about what is ebru here.

The art form of ebru was practiced all the way back in Ottoman times. A local artist will demonstrate the practice first, then teach you how to do it. Other than the experience itself, you’ll walk away with a piece of art that makes one of the best souvenirs from the trip. I’ve still got mine hanging up in my flat (mainly because it’s because I’m rubbish at art and my picture was actually quite good!)

I found this workshop to be one of the most fascinating and creative I’ve ever taken. If you’re into your arts & crafts then you’ll love this tour. It’s also perfect for families too.

Bosphorus tour with lunch

bosphorus tour

One of my favourite things about Istanbul has got to be the beautiful Bosphorus, the river that separates the European and Asian side. I love having brunch in one of the many riverfront cafes and taking an evening cruise along the Bosphorus. The views of the city are incredible as you’re floating along on a boat.

The good news is that there are many Istanbul tours that revolve around the river. This Bosphorus boat tour is highly recommended, as you’ll get a guided tour as you sail past famous sights such as the Ortaköy Mosque and Dolmabahçe Palace. It’s a super comfortable way to check out some of the city’s best spots.

You’ll be well fed as there’s a stop in the middle for a traditional Turkish lunch. Yummy.

Istanbul classics half-day morning tour

istanbul tour

For a more complete Istanbul city tour, I’d highly recommend this 3-hour morning tour. Your guide will take you on a journey through some of the most famous landmarks in Istanbul in the space of just a few hours.

You’ll leave this tour with a much greater understanding of the city’s rich history and culture. It covers many of the ‘must-sees’ of the city, including the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sofia, the Grand Bazaar and the historic neighbourhood of Sultanahmet.

I really recommend this tour if you’ve just arrived in Istanbul. It’ll really gives you a good understanding of the city and you can ask for lots of restaurant recommendations along the way!

Historical Turkish bath experience

turkish bath istanbul

This is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Istanbul. With this tour, you can (quite literally) immerse yourself into Turkish culture.

It includes an authentic Hammam experience in a five-century-old bath in the heart of the historic city. This involves a traditional Turkish bath massage and you get to relax in the steam bath after. Which may be just what you need after all the city exploration and walking you’ve done.

If you’re looking to experience a hammam while in Istanbul, this experience at Çemberlitaş Hamam is just the place to do it. I can’t tell you how relaxing and enjoyable this one is!

Istanbul: Live Whirling Dervish experience

whirling dervish istanbul

Get ready to embark on a spiritual journey as you witness the beautiful Sufi performance of the Whirling Dervishes (you can learn more about them here ). This mystical ancient show is an unforgettable experience, and this is undoubtedly one of the most magical tours in Istanbul. It’s just so mesmerising watching them go round and round. Makes me dizzy just typing about it.

The venue is historic and stunning and the Mevlevi music will take you into a whole other world. The tour includes entrance tickets to the ceremony as well as hot drinks. This really is one of the most cultural things to do in Istanbul so I can’t recommend it enough.

Istanbul: Camlica Hill and Dolmabahçe Palace guided tour

dolmabahçe palace istanbul

This is a fantastic Istanbul day tour. Just prepare for real opulence at this guided tour of the stunning rooms and gardens of the Dolmabahçe Palace . I was absolutely blown away by the decadence of the architecture. There is an actual ceiling made entirely of gold .

This tour gives you the chance to learn a little more about the palace’s background and the lifestyle in the Ottoman period. Feast your eyes on gorgeous views over the Bosphorus as you drive over the very first intercontinental bridge (connecting the European and Asian side).

You’ll be taken to visit Istanbul’s highest peak at Çamlıca Hill, which is a great spot for some Instagram-worthy shots.

If you’re interested in learning more about Istanbul and why this is such a fascinating place to visit, then check out my fun facts about Istanbul here!

My son and I had a great time during this tour. Everything was arranged very well. We had an English speaking guide who had so much knowledge, and made everything easy for us. The old historical sites we visited were very interesting and beautiful. Our group was small, 14 people, which was really nice. The hotels were all good, some were extra good with fitness or swimmingpools, which my son liked a lot.

Mr Deniz, the guide, has a wide and deep knowledge of the history of the whole Cappadocia area… We were very lucky to have them as our tour leaders. We cannot thank them enough. We paid for the budget option of accommodation and it exceeded our expectations. The meals included in two restaurants out of 3 was excellent and very tasty. However, instead of 4 courses maybe only 2 courses and a soft drink included would be a better option. We really enjoyed our tour and a lot of great memories made. Thank you for a fantastic trip!

A Beginner’s Guide to Istanbul: The City of Two Continents

By Louise Peterson · Last updated on April 29, 2024

As a young girl with big travel dreams, I saw pictures of the Grand Bazaar and the Blue Mosque, never thinking I would one day make it to this far-off land. But two decades and one wildly ambitious road trip later, I finally made it to Istanbul.

Istanbul

Yet, after many days on the road, discovering the open spaces and rural wonders of Turkey , Istanbul delivered a full sensory overload that I was ill-prepared for. I am no stranger to big cities, having conquered the likes of Saigon and Bangkok, but Istanbul came with its own set of challenges that regular walking-on-sunshine bloggers don’t tell you about.

I’m not here to spread doom and gloom either! Istanbul is a remarkable city if you go in with the right set of tools. So, soak in a few reality check tips and get ready to explore one of the most enchanting cities in the world!

Taming the Transport Beast

Metro Bridge

Istanbul’s bustling streets can be overwhelming, with cars driving recklessly and pedestrians swarming from every angle. The city is nearly impossible to navigate during peak hours with traffic almost at a standstill. This is your call to embrace the city’s efficient public transport system as your trusty steed.

Opt for the Istanbulkart, your golden ticket to navigating buses, trams, ferries, and metros hassle-free. It is a physical card that you can buy at the kiosks close to metro and tram stations and it costs around $2. You can preload it with money or buy a set amount of trips, although preloading works out a little cheaper. But at only $0.50 a ride, this won’t break the bank.

Istanbul Tram

When my time came to buy an Istanbulkart, a small meltdown ensued. Suffering from hostel bed-related back problems and landing a machine that simply did not want to cooperate made this a nearly impossible task. But once I managed to get my card loaded, the tram system became my new best friend.

Pro Tip : Taxi scams in Istanbul are unlike anything I have seen before. They charge exorbitant fees to unsuspecting tourists to take you only a kilometer or so to your destination. Istanbul is a very walkable city once you are in the main tourist area and for everything else, you should opt for the metro or trams. Avoid taxis like a two-day-old kebab.

How To Eat Like a Sultan

Turkish Breakfast

Speaking of kebabs, what should you eat and what should you avoid in Istanbul’s food scene? You should prepare your taste buds for a culinary odyssey unlike any other but there are a few things that you should know.

The highlight of my day was usually the Turkish breakfast. Instead of breakfast for dinner like in the West, the Turks prefer to highlight savory favorites at breakfast and I wasn’t mad at it. These buffet-style setups bring everything from fresh veggies to mezze like feta and olives, scrambled tomato and eggs (menemen), sausages, breads, and even French fries. Try and book at least one Turkish breakfast at one of the river-side restaurants like Oba Sultan Café Restaurant or Lokma Restaurant.

On the dinner side, classics like Köfte (meatballs) and Lahmacun (Turkish Pizza) are a given but try to avoid Doner kebabs. This isn’t such a sacrilegious statement as you might think. If you are used to overstuffed, juicy doners from your favorite corner shop, the ones in Turkey will be a big disappointment.

You get a few slices of meat and sad lettuce and tomato, it’s not a vibe. This is your time to explore less famous dishes like pide (flatbread), Beyran Çorbası (lamb soup), or my personal favorite, Hunkar Begendi. The latter is also known as “Sultan’s Delight” so you know you are in for something special.

Pro Tip : When you sit down at a restaurant, think twice before accepting the bread and water. It is automatically brought to your table but you will be charged for it. Rather save your appetite for the real food!

Turkish Delights

Turkish Delights

When it comes to the sweet stuff, you can rarely go wrong. The most famous baklava shop in the city is Karaköy Güllüoğlu but this is the Prada of dessert shops. It’s gaudy and overpriced and you will be much better off finding a tucked-away spot. It’s syrup and pastry, not much can go wrong.

You should also steer clear of the Turkish Delight shops inside the Grand Bazaar. They look like something out of Willy Wonka but they are much pricier than the stores on the outside. But the world of lokum is a sweet rabbit hole that I will happily fall down.

Forget about the generic pink and white squares that you might initially think of. The true jewel of Turkish sweets is the colorful rolls of nougat, ganache, and the magical gummy substance that brings it all together.

Tourist Cards: Worth It?

Istanbul

Istanbul is a hotbed of sights to see. You can probably ramble off five attractions before even researching the city. My biggest piece of advice is that you should consider buying either the Istanbul Tourist Pass, the Istanbul Museum Pass, or the Turkey Museum Pass.

These cards aren’t usually worth it in my opinion but there is simply too much to see and do in Istanbul to try and pay for everything separately.

Choosing your card depends on your situation entirely. The Istanbul Tourist Card is available from 1 to 10-day passes and ranges from $120 to $260. This includes dozens of guided tours and activities like a segue tour, a whirling dervish ticket, and a dinner cruise. If you have enough days in Istanbul, this can be more than worth it if you book in advance.

treasures in Istanbul

The Turkish Museum Pass was my gateway to the country but I visited almost every major point of interest so my ticket paid for itself after just a day or two. The Istanbul Museum Pass costs around $100 so you need to visit at least five museums to make it worth it. These tickets all last 15 days so you have more time to make the most of them.

Pro Tip : If you buy a tourist card, you should check which activities need a prior reservation. This is immensely popular and you can’t just show up at the door of a show or experience hoping to get in.

What Is A “Must See” in Istanbul

Istanbul

It’s easy to just list all the top attractions in Istanbul like the Hagia Sofia and the Grand Bazaar but do you really know what to expect?

When it comes to shopping, the outside of the Grand Bazaar has far better deals and it is 10 times more sprawling. The interior isn’t actually all that big and the prices are often set in stone.

bazaar

With some expert bargaining genes on my side, I tracked down a lamp merchant who took me to his dusty storeroom where I assembled my own Turkish lamp in the exact style I wanted and at half the price of inside the bazaar.

Bazaar

The Egyptian Spice bazaar is also a sight to behold but the teas and treats on the outside are much cheaper and you won’t get told off if you try a free sample and don’t purchase something.

Topkapi Palace is another fascinating attraction but it is worth upgrading your ticket to include the Harem and Hagia Irene. While the palace complex is attractive in itself, the harem is simply spectacular with its intricate tilework and lavish interiors.

The treasures in Istanbul aren’t all above ground either. The Basilica Cistern is a borderline divine experience and dates back to 532 A.D. but the Tünel is also a fun experience that few people know of. It is the second oldest underground train in the world and will take you between Karaköy and Beyoğlu in only 90 seconds, saving you a trek up the hill.

sightseeing boat

Pro Tip : Corny as it might be, it is great fun taking a sightseeing boat along the Bosphorus. I simply rocked up to the cheapest one and took a seat on the top deck. The views are great and you can take your own snacks on board for the ride.

Where to Stay in Istanbul

Where to Stay in Istanbul

Istanbul straddles two continents and offers contrasting experiences on its European and Asian sides. The European side boasts a rich collection of history, with iconic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. Here, winding streets lead to centuries-old bazaars where the echoes of ancient civilizations still resonate.

On the other hand, the Asian side of Istanbul offers a vibrant and contemporary atmosphere, with bustling neighborhoods like Kadikoy and Moda serving as hubs for nightlife and entertainment. Istanbul is one of the few places I have been where I will absolutely recommend staying in the main tourist area. This is mostly because of the sheer size of the city. For a taste of history, I would opt for Sultanahmet or Beyoglu on the European side, while those eager for lively evenings might choose Kadikoy or Besiktas on the Asian side.

Pro Tip : Each side of Istanbul offers its own unique charm and you should also consider spending a few days on either side of the Bosphorus if you have time on your side.

Cultural Etiquette In Istanbul

Cultural Etiquette

For the most part, I found Istanbul to be quite safe and welcoming, but there is a big focus on tourism in the city and you will never feel completely lost while you move in the Old Town Area. However, it is still important to embrace local customs with respect and courtesy.

Dress modestly when visiting mosques and religious sites, covering shoulders and knees out of reverence. Women should also cover their heads and I found it best to always have a scarf in my bag to throw on should I stumble into an unexpected Mosque.

Istanbul

Practice basic Turkish phrases like “Merhaba” (hello) and “Teşekkür ederim” (thank you) to forge genuine connections with locals. Above all, approach each encounter with an open heart and a willingness to learn – the greatest souvenir of all.

Pro Tip : If you forget a head covering, there are vending machines at most major attractions that sell disposable ones.

19 Best Things to Do in Istanbul, Turkey

The world's only city that sits on the two continents of Europe and Asia, separated by the Bosphorus strait, Istanbul possesses so many layers that make it absolutely unique. A megacity that has seen the rise and fall of two empires, the former

  • All Things To Do

best city tour istanbul

Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) free

Sultan Ahmed I was determined to build a mosque that rivaled the nearby Hagia Sophia , and most would agree that he accomplished this task or, at least, came close. Since the early 1600s, the Blue Mosque has been quite the sight to behold, with an array of domes, semidomes and minarets (or narrow towers). It's also one of the biggest tourist draws in Istanbul.

Visitors say this mosque offers stunning architecture inside and out. It can, however, get busy, so consider arriving early. And remember, the Blue Mosque is an active religious site, so dress conservatively. Women should wear headscarves, as is custom. If you forgot to bring one, you can borrow one from the mosque.

Hagia Sophia Mosque (Ayasofya Cami) Hagia Sophia Mosque (Ayasofya Cami) free

Tourists flock en masse to the Hagia Sophia for its stunning architecture, glorious interior views and historical significance. Built between 532 and 537, the building was a church for nearly a thousand years. It then served as a mosque from 1453 until 1935, before becoming a secular museum. In 2020, the building once again became a working mosque.

Once the biggest cathedral in the world, the Hagia Sophia is considered the magnum opus of Byzantine architecture. Visitors say it is a must-see when in Istanbul and recommend taking a guided tour for more information about the history of the site.

best city tour istanbul

Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici) Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici)

The Basilica Cistern is Istanbul's largest surviving Byzantine cistern and one of its most unique historic sites. Constructed in 532 for Justinian I, this sprawling underground water reservoir –which is roughly the size of two football fields – once supplied water to the Great Palace of Constantinople, a large palace that served as the main residence for local emperors for centuries. Though the palace no longer exists, the cistern was renovated in 1985 to welcome visitors. In 2022, it reopened to the public after a five-year restoration effort. Its most noteworthy feature is a pair of Medusa heads that sit upside down at the base of two columns.

According to past travelers, the Basilica Cistern is easy to miss but worth checking out, despite its lack of interior attractions. Many said the site is beautifully preserved, but queues to buy tickets and enter can get quite long, so several recommended visiting with a tour group. Multiple half- and full-day tours that include stops at the cistern are offered on Viator ; tour prices range from $39 to $686 per person.

Grand Bazaar (Kapaliçarsi) Grand Bazaar (Kapaliçarsi) free

Located within walking distance of must-visit sights like the Blue Mosque , the Basilica Cistern  and Süleymaniye Mosque , the Grand Bazaar is one of the biggest and oldest covered shopping markets in the world. It regularly overwhelms visitors with its more than 60 streets of 3,000-plus shops, each accompanied by an overzealous vendor. Products range from hand-loomed carpets to antiques, traditional textiles to copper and silver artisan objects, artisan jewelry and ceramics to clothing and much more.

Despite the size and chaos of this bazaar, shoppers say you'll find yourself strangely at ease with the rhythm of the market, thanks in part to the friendliness of the vendors, who are far from pushy. Remember, though, that Westerners are often quoted higher rates for items here, so come prepared to bargain. Most merchants will drop their rates by as much as 50% when a customer refuses to pay full price. What's more, additional discounts are often given to those who pay with cash, although most vendors do accept credit cards.

Spice Bazaar (Misir Çarsisi) Spice Bazaar (Misir Çarsisi)

U.S. News Insider Tip: Take a lunch break at Pandeli Restaurant  inside the bazaar, which has been around since the 1950s serving classic Turkish dishes in a refined ambiance. Make reservations in advance and don't miss the stairs that lead up to the restaurant on the left side of the bazaar's Eminönü entrance. – Feride Yalav-Heckeroth

Built in the 17th century from the revenue of the Ottoman administrative district in Egypt (and therefore also known as the Egyptian Bazaar) this historic bazaar is the second most famous covered market in Istanbul. A must-visit for gourmets who love to shop for traditional ingredients, the more than 80 shops inside the market have a wide and fragrant spectrum of spices, nuts, dried fruits, Turkish coffee and traditional sweets.

Süleymaniye Mosque (Süleymaniye Camii) Süleymaniye Mosque (Süleymaniye Camii) free

Nestled within Istanbul's historic Fatih district by the Golden Horn, Istanbul University and the Grand Bazaar , Süleymaniye Mosque is considered one of the city's most impressive Ottoman mosques. Built between 1550 and 1557 after being commissioned by its namesake, Süleyman I, this grand structure features multiple gardens and a large dome, plus high-end finishes like mother-of-pearl window shutters, painted corbels, traditional ceramic tiles and stained-glass windows.

Recent travelers described their time at this mosque as "amazing" and "peaceful," adding that it is just as stunning as the Blue Mosque and cannot be missed. What's more, this attraction is not as central and popular as others like the Hagia Sophia , meaning you won't have to rub elbows with lots of tourists while visiting. But remember, like other religious sites in the area, Süleymaniye Mosque hosts six prayer services every day, so expect occasional closures and dress conservatively. If you forget to wear long pants or pack a scarf to cover your head, the mosque offers loaner coverings at its entrance.

Rüstem Pasha Mosque (Rüstem Pasa Camii) Rüstem Pasha Mosque (Rüstem Pasa Camii)

One of Sultanahmet's lesser-known mosques is also one of its most beautiful. Designed by the famous Ottoman imperial architect Mimar Sinan (who also designed the Süleymaniye Mosque ) and completed in 1563, the structure was dedicated to the Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha. The mosque's most important trait are the large quantities of Iznik tiles that decorate its interior in a wide variety of floral and geometric patterns. It's a definite deviation from Mimar Sinan's usual style, which favored the structure rather than its internal decoration.

Previous travelers commented that this more hidden sight is a definite stop for anyone interested in Islamic art and Ottoman architecture. They add the design impresses deeply with its hand-painted tilework as well as its majestic dome. Travelers have also commented that the mosque is a welcome respite from Istanbul's busy streets.

Topkapi Palace Museum (Topkapi Sarayi Müzesi) Topkapi Palace Museum (Topkapi Sarayi Müzesi)

Topkapi Palace served as the home of the Ottoman Sultans from 1478 to 1856 and is one of Istanbul's most popular attractions. It officially became a museum in 1924, shortly after the end of the Ottoman era, and features brilliant architecture, manicured courtyards and extensive weaponry, porcelain, cutlery, art and fabric collections.

Previous visitors loved admiring the palace's architecture and perusing its exhibits, saying you'll need several hours to take in everything there is to see. Popular exhibits include the kitchens, the calligraphy area and the armaments room. Many also recommend strolling through the property's gardens and refueling at the on-site coffee shop, where picturesque views of the Golden Horn await you.

At the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, which opened near the Topkapi Palace Museum  in 1869, you'll find more than a million antiquities displayed throughout three buildings: the Archaeological Museum, the Ancient Orient Museum and the Tiled Kiosk Museum. Exhibitions offer a wealth of artifacts from the Assyrian, Hittite, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations.

Travelers have commented on the beauty of the museum structures themselves and appreciated the vast collection at this underrated museum. Others recommended seeing the Sarcophagus of Alexander, a highlight in the collection.

The Beyoglu Neighborhood The Beyoglu Neighborhood

The heart of Istanbul's local life, Beyoglu, once known as Pera, was the center of European aristocratic settlement during the Ottoman era. The neoclassical architecture of its structures all speak of this past. Starting with the new Ataturk Cultural Center  in the famous Taksim Square, the equally famous Istiklal Avenue stretches all the way to Tünel Square, where the historic Tünel funicular station is located as one of the world's oldest subterranean urban railways.

When walking down Istiklal, make sure to stop and explore the many historic shopping arcades, restaurants, art galleries and churches hidden in the side streets. Standouts include the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, the city's largest Catholic Church; the Istanbul Cinema Museum , exhibiting the history of Turkish cinema inside a stunning former mansion from the 19th century; and the art gallery Casa Botter inside a renovated and repurposed art nouveau apartment building from the 1900s.

Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi)

Certainly one of Istanbul's most iconic structures, the Galata Tower was first built during the Byzantine era, rebuilt by the Genoese, who gave it the stone mesh exterior it still possesses today, and later used as a prison during the Ottoman period. Today, the tower welcomes visitors who can climb to the top to enjoy a gorgeous 360-degree view of Istanbul.

Travelers have remarked that the tower is located in the city's "coolest" neighborhood and noted that the view from the top is especially amazing at night. Others commented that the tower itself is beautiful, though they felt the steep entry fee wasn't worth the experience.

Dolmabahce Palace Dolmabahce Palace

Sitting along the Bosphorus near the Kabatas tram stop and the Besiktas  ferry port, Dolmabahçe Palace's jaw-dropping beauty and historical importance impresses visitors. Built in the 19th century, the palace was used by the final Ottoman sultans as their primary residence and administrative seat. The interior and exterior architecture showcase a mix of European and Ottoman designs that can only be found at this global crossroad. Make sure to also visit the National Painting Museum next door (included in the ticket), which showcases around 200 paintings from the palace's collection that spans Turkish and international artists from the 19th century.

Past travelers were wowed by the palace's extravagant interior, although some wished photography was permitted and felt tours were rushed and lacked information. Several visitors also reported long ticket lines, and the property's website  cautions that the ticket office closes early once all passes have been distributed for the day, so plan on arriving early.

best city tour istanbul

The Besiktas Neighborhood The Besiktas Neighborhood

After exploring the Dolmabahçe Palace , a stroll in the Besiktas neighborhood at large is a great way to delve into local life, away from the tourist highlights. Walk up Süleyman Seba Avenue to reach Akaretler, the 19th-century row houses originally built for those who worked at Dolmabahçe Palace. They're now filled with modern shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. Stroll down Çiragan Avenue to reach Yildiz Park, one of the city's largest public parks with two Ottoman-era pavilions that now serve as cafes and enjoy some time away from the crowds. Right across the park, gaze at one of Istanbul's most iconic hotels with its ornate gates, the Çiragan Palace Kempinski, inside a former Ottoman palace. If you still have the energy, continue on Çiragan Avenue to Ortaköy Square to enjoy a waterfront view of the famous Bosphorus Bridge with the Ortaköy Mosque built in the 1850s right before it.

The best way to reach Besiktas is via bus, however, the neighborhood also has its own ferry port with transfers available from Eminönü (Old City).

U.S. News Insider Tip: Make sure to visit Kalyon Kültür , an art and culture space inside a beautifully renovated Ottoman mansion built in 1889. – Feride Yalav-Heckeroth

It's in this neighborhood that you'll find the city's residents shopping for the latest collections from Turkish and international designers. Apart from Beymen , Turkey's most exclusive department store, you'll also find brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel plus the atelier and showrooms of some of Istanbul's most important fashion designers. The neighborhood is, however, also home to brands such as Gap, Massimo Dutti, Zara and Marks & Spencer, pleasing shopping crowds of all budgets in one go.

Galataport Galataport

Much more than the world's first underground cruise ship terminal, Galataport is filled with restaurants, cafes, shops and a wide boardwalk that all face the Bosphorus. Apart from Istanbul Modern , Galataport's other cultural offering is the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture , designed by the famed Turkish architect Emre Arolat's firm. It has a vast collection that presents Turkish art from the late 19th-century Ottoman period to the end of the 20th century. The port is also home to the luxurious Peninsula Hotel; three of its four buildings are renovated heritage structures overlooking the Old City.

Travelers have remarked that the port is modern and has lots of branded storefronts and restaurants and that the views are incredible. They add that the modern design of Galataport and the historic architecture of nearby structures gives visitors the best of both worlds.

Istanbul Modern Istanbul Modern

Inside a stunning waterfront structure by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Istanbul Modern is the city's most important hub for contemporary art with its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The collection focuses mainly on pioneering Turkish artists and also includes a photography collection. Make sure to visit the museum's rooftop that faces the Bosphorus and the Old City and features shallow pools that reflect the horizon.

Previous visitors have commended the large variety of artworks, including all types of art, media, sculpture and interactive exhibits. Other guests recommended the rooftop and its fantastic view of the historic city center.

The Kadiköy Neighborhood The Kadiköy Neighborhood

U.S. News Insider Tip: Heading to Kadiköy Market? Start your journey on Günesli Bahçe Street and then get lost among the offerings, especially the many little eateries selling street food. – Feride Yalav-Heckeroth

Istanbul's Asian side (or Anatolian side as the locals like to say) is often completely overlooked by tourists, but it's the perfect locale for those who want to have a genuine local experience. Kadiköy is very down-to-earth and still very Turkish, largely untouched by the cosmopolitan air that is prevalent on the European side. After arriving at the Kadiköy ferry station, the first stop should be the vast Kadiköy Market, a network of interconnected streets that are filled with vendors selling everything from fresh fish to produce, cheeses to pickled vegetables, coffee to nuts, offal to honey and so much more.

Beylerybeyi Palace Beylerybeyi Palace

Another hidden gem Istanbul's Anatolian (Asian) side, the breathtakingly ornate Beylerbeyi Palace was built between 1863 and 1865 under the order of Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz. It served as a summer residence and state guesthouse. The waterfront palace was designed by Sarkis Balyan, who, along with other members of the Armenian Balyan family, designed such other icons as the Dolmabahçe  and Çiragan Palaces. A confluence of Western and Eastern architectural styles, the interior of the lavish palace is filled with Turkish Hereke carpets; French Baccarat crystal chandeliers; and Chinese, Japanese, French and German ceramics, to name a few.

Previous travelers were astounded by the beauty and design of the palace, which exhibited wonderful craftsmanship. The palace's coffee shop was also recommended due to the stunning Bosphorus view.

Büyükada Büyükada

U.S. News Insider Tip: This island is very popular on the weekends, so if you'd rather avoid the crowds, visit on a weekday. – Feride Yalav-Heckeroth

The largest of Istanbul's Princes' Islands is certainly its most popular and is the best way to really take a break from the city's endearingly chaotic energy. Büyükada (which literally translates to 'large island') was a popular getaway for Istanbul's prosperous Greeks, Jews and Armenians who had lavish summer mansions built to accommodate their vacationing needs. Nowadays, these Ottoman-era mansions are some of the most important attractions on the island, and locals and visitors alike arrive in droves to stroll along the streets to gaze up at the historic architecture. Some of the most notable houses are located on Çankaya Avenue.

Turkey’s melting pot: a foodie break in Istanbul

The best way to understand the city is through its food, and the best guide is a Michelin-star chef who knows where to find succulent doners, crisp calamari and rich taramasalata

S aturday morning, 10am, and I’m sitting at a café table on a cobbled street in the Beşiktaş neighbourhood of Istanbul, sipping a glass of çay (Turkish tea) and waiting for breakfast. By the café entrance, a plump, grey-haired man in a crisp white apron is sharpening a knife, before slicing through what is generally acknowledged to be the largest doner kebab in Turkey. The kebab weighs 100kg, a meaty monster slowly cooking from the outside in. Our guide, Sinan, tells us that Black Sea (Karadeniz) doners from this area are always the best – all of it will be gone by mid-afternoon.

Istanbul is a city that runs on its stomach. It may be steeped in history, but the best way to understand this multi-layered melting pot of east and west, Ottoman and Byzantine, is undoubtedly through its food. I’m lucky enough to be spending a couple of days with Cenk Debensason, recently awarded a Michelin star for his restaurant, Arkestra . The chance to discover the city through his eyes – and taste buds – promises a different version of Istanbul.

After breakfast, instead of following the well-trodden tourist trail to the historic district of Sultanahmet, we head north to Bebek, a leafy suburb where the streets are dotted with boutiques and small-batch coffee shops. I feel rather like I’m in the Turkish equivalent of Hampstead. Like London, Istanbul shares a similar sense of being a collection of villages, stitched together over the centuries, and getting away from the centre offers the chance to experience it more like a local than a visitor. We dip into Midnight , where the artfully arranged shelves and racks are filled with jewellery, ceramics and clothes by the city’s hottest designers, and head on to the Petra Roasting Company , where sofas are shared with snoozing cats and the nuttily rich Ethiopian coffee fires us up.

A cafe on the waterfront at Ortakoy on the European shore of the Bosphorus.

From Bebek, we go further north to Tarabya, a waterfront neighbourhood that has attracted tourists since it began life as a health resort in the 18th century. As we drive alongside the Bosphorus, it reminds me of the winding roads that flank Lake Como: restaurants and hotels on one side, the water on the other – and on the opposite side, opulent mansions built decades, even centuries before, for the city’s wealthy elite.

We’ve come for lunch at Kiyi , an Istanbul institution that has been serving the same fish-rich menu since it opened in the 1960s. The meal is exquisite: plump mussels stuffed with mint, crisp calamari, rose-tinted octopus and taramasalata thick with roe. The vast turbot that appears as our shared main course, buttery soft, slipping off the bone like silk, ruins me for all other fish for ever.

After lunch, we drive back to Beyoglu to explore the cobbled streets of the Çukurcuma district, where the elegant, European-style mansions house antique shops selling everything from ancient statuary to art deco lamps and retro 1960s furniture that could have come straight from the set of Austin Powers. One of the most famous is A La Turca , owned by the ebullient Erkal Aksoy, who shows us around his extraordinary emporium before settling us in on slouchy leather sofas with tea, biscuits and glasses of his homemade cherry brandy.

Chefs at Ciya Sofrasi restaurant serving Anatolian specialities in Kadikoy.

The following day we set out on the ferry to Kadiköy, on the Asian side – one of the city’s foodiest neighbourhoods. Next to me, a man produces a bread roll from his pocket and tears off chunks, throwing them up to the gaggle of gulls flying alongside the boat. To my surprise, instead of swooping down to gobble the crumbs from the water, they dive and dart to catch the bread in mid-air – an impressive display of aeronautics that shows the gulls are as obsessed with food as everyone else in this city.

In Kadiköy, we dip into pickle shops, with their glass jars stacked from floor to ceiling, and cubby-hole stalls with great gold samovars of olive oil and soft mounds of spices – scarlet chilli, golden saffron, the brittle woody flowers of star anise. It’s warm enough to sit outside for lunch at Çiya Sofras , which specialises in traditional Anatolian dishes. The table groans with unctuous aubergine and yoghurt dips, crispy lahmacun (flatbread with spicy meat) and succulent kebabs.

The ferry ride back is a blissful hit of sunshine before we walk through the city’s Dickensian meatpacking district to one of its newest treasures – the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam – a spectacularly beautiful Turkish bath, dating back to the 16th century. Opening its doors this spring after a 13-year restoration project, it offers bathing spaces that are pristine white and freckled with stars cut into the domed ceiling, and there’s a fascinating museum charting the cultural importance and history of hamams in both Ottoman and modern-day Turkish life.

Food at Arkestra, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Istanbul.

On our final night, we take a taxi through the city’s labyrinthine roads to Arkestra , Debensason’s restaurant, tucked away in the quiet Etiler neighbourhood in Beşiktaş. Stepping through the door feels like walking into the coolest kind of house party. Upstairs, cocktails are flowing in the Listening Room bar, while the main dining room feels like a buzzy, upmarket bistro. The food is modern and creative, a confident mix of classical French technique and vibrant Asian flavours. Tuna sashimi comes with sushi rice ice-cream and a ginger ponzu vinaigrette, panko fried beef with sweetly sour tonkatsu sauce. Everything looks beautiful, tastes delicious and leaves you wanting just a little bit more – the perfect metaphor for Istanbul itself.

3 dishes of different sizes on a wooden table. The biggest has a pasta dish in a green sauce, whilst the smaller two have a slice of bread and a baked bun

6 dishes to eat in Glasgow, from chunky noodles to smoked tomatoes

Scotland’s second city celebrates bold, international cuisine from Punjabi samosas to seasonal agnolotti.

Glasgow’s food scene, like its denizens, is convivial, generous and bold. While the city’s fine dining restaurants once lived in the shadow of Scotland’s capital, today Glasgow is home to Michelin-starred opulence, stripped-back Mediterranean modernism and cheap eats alike. You can sample everything from ornate plated curries and kebabs cooked over coals, seek out Kurdish falafel, award-winning lamb shawarma or Punjabi thali, and choose between vegan tacos, regional Chinese cuisine and some bright contemporary Scottish fare. Come for the food, stay for the fun.

1. SYLVAN : smoked tomatoes with yogurt & chilli butter

Glasgow has no shortage of vegetarian restaurants, and this is one of the best, with an impressive low-intervention wine list and a menu of small plates that’s every bit as inspired, riffing on both Middle Eastern and pan-Asian influences. A deceptively simple dish of smoked tomatoes, roasted just-so, sits pleasingly upon yoghurt drizzled with chilli butter. Sprouts with pickled chillies and aubergines in a hot and sweet sauce are also a must.

2. Celenano's : ricotta agnolotti

Much of Celentano’s menu — including the sourdough, pickles and vermouth — is made on site, and this stuffed pasta dish is emblematic of the restaurant's Italian-inspired, seasonal, minimal-waste ethos. The agnolotti are plump with fresh ricotta made using milk from Ayrshire’s Mossgiel Organic Farm, and served with tender purple sprouting broccoli and toasted sourdough breadcrumbs. Husband-and-wife duo Anna and Dean Park lead the venue from within the baronial grandeur of the Cathedral House hotel.

3. GLORIOSA : paccheri with pork & fennel ragu

Scottish chef-proprietor Rosie Healey, formerly of now-closed Alchemilla in Finnieston, as well as London’s Ottolenghi, Padella and Rochelle Canteen, helms the Mediterranean-inspired kitchen at Gloriosa. Here, she whips up dishes defined by rusticity and finesse, such as al dente tubes of paccheri pasta in a rich pork and fennel ragu, topped with olive oil and parmesan. The focaccia, all golden crust and chewy interior, is the most delicious vehicle with which to scoop up the sauce.

4. RANJIT’S KITCHEN : samosa channa special

The samosas served at this bustling Southside spot are some of Glasgow’s best. Crisp triangles of fresh pastry, burnished in the fryer, give way to soft cushions of potato inside, with a jolt of green chilli to awaken the senses. They’re the perfect foil for a side of chickpea and paneer curry in a mellow, moreish sauce. The tamarind chutney and fresh mint yoghurt is, like everything, made fresh daily by Ranjit Kaur and team. The vegetarian kitchen channels the spirit of Sikh langar community dining, offering affordable food showcasing the bold flavours of the Punjab.

5. The Real Wan : geda chunky noodles

Much to do with the Real Wan is unassuming. The food is anything but. A tiny kitchen produces everything from noodles to fermented chilli sauces and oils, made by chef Lea Wu Hussan who champions the cuisine of her native Guiyang in southwest China. The geda noodles are thick, authentically irregular-shaped and al dente, and come in a heady, tangy garlic sauce with smoky beef ragu (or spicy aubergine). Guizhou, like neighbouring Szechuan and Hunan, is a province famed for its tongue-numbing flavours, and Lea’s spicy sour noodles certainly live up to this.

6. Shawarma King : lamb shawarma

“Döner is really famous in the UK, but now shawarma is taking its place — sorry!” Shawarma King’s owner Majed Badrekhan says. The Springfield Quay branch is one of the most decorated kebab houses Scotland has to offer — including top spot at the British Kebab Awards in 2022 and 2023. Lamb for the shawarma is marinated a day in advance, then built into a tower over the course of two laborious hours. The flatbread wraps are rolled out fresh then cooked in the tandoor over coals, blistering the dough and finishing it with more than a lick of smoke. The salads, sauces and pickles are made fresh, an attention to detail that ensures this takeaway spot stands out in a crowded market.

The 10 Best Trips for Seniors and Retirees Who Love to Travel

Getaways for your golden years.

O ne of the wonderful things about hitting retirement age is having the flexibility in your schedule to go out and explore the world. If you're looking for trips for seniors, you're in luck: InsureMyTrip recently released its list of the top 10 cities around the world for senior travel, making it easier than ever for people over age 60 to find the ideal spot for their next vacation. (We think some of them sound like the best places to retire too.)

To determine the top 10 trips for seniors, the folks at InsureMyTrip evaluated a handful of travel considerations for cities around the world. Those included the ease of walking in the city, access to health care, public transportation, the number of tours for seniors and peacefulness. You'll notice that many of the best places to travel in your golden years are also great for traveling on a budget .

And before you ask: Yes, travel is a good idea for anyone who's able, regardless of whether they're age 60, 70 or beyond. In fact, travel helps keep us young. "We know loneliness affects older Americans disproportionately, and the importance of social connections only increases as we age," says James Moses, president and CEO of Road Scholar, one of our favorite tour companies . "[Travel provides] enriching, meaningful, stimulating social connections to hundreds of thousands of older adults."

Ready to find out which trips for seniors over 60 made the cut? Read on for the top picks, in order.

1. Istanbul, Turkey

Best for: Activities

Coming in at No. 1 in InsureMyTrip's list of trips for seniors is Istanbul. "Istanbul's recognition as the best destination for senior citizens highlights its cultural richness with highly rated things to do and high-quality health-care services," says Sarah Webber of InsureMyTrip. Cosmopolitan Istanbul is a cultural and ethnic melting pot, a unique city straddling two continents (Europe and Asia), with Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern Turkish structures—it's a skyline of domes and minarets made up of mosques, churches and synagogues, palaces, castles and towers—and of course, incredible cultural landmarks, including the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.

The Turkish city scored highly across many of the metrics, particularly for its quality of things to do (a rating of 4.63 out of 5), health care and ease of walking.

2. Athens, Greece

Best for: Guided tours

An absolute must-visit highlight of Greece is the city of Athens, which offers a unique mixture of modern buildings and ancient monuments. You'll find bustling cosmopolitan streets lined with shops and international hotels, but turn any corner and the views of the storied Acropolis appear before you. More than 22% of the population is over 65 years old, so it's no wonder the city has a large number of guided tours aimed at senior citizens—an astounding 181, according to InsureMyTrip.

3. Rome, Italy

Best for: Ancient architecture

It's hard to talk about visiting Italy without starting at this classical city, where contemporary culture stands shoulder to shoulder with ancient architecture. Landmarks of the Eternal City include the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and you can even travel to another country by crossing into Vatican City to see the Sistine Chapel. "The inclusion of Rome in the top three destinations for senior citizens is thanks to its number of tours for senior citizens [107] and high-quality things to do, making it a dream city for many elderly travelers," says Webber. "The average age of the population [47 years old] is among the highest in the study, making it ideally suited for older travelers."

4. Bangkok, Thailand

Best for: A great deal

Bangkok is the spot to head to for affordable bucket-list travel . Here, golden temples and palaces line the winding Chao Phraya River, and travelers can take advantage of affordable luxuries such as authentic Thai spas, with prices starting as low as $10 for a two-hour massage, incredible local cuisine for just a few dollars and a ride on a tuk-tuk costing just $1.50 an hour. Bangkok's quality of things to do (rated 4.51 out of 5)—hello, golden-Buddha-filled temples—and health care (a rating of 77 out of 100) helped secure its spot in the top five trips for seniors.

5. Tallinn, Estonia

Best for: Holiday markets and winter charm

There are definitely some surprises in the survey, says Webber, including multiple spots in Eastern Europe that fill the middle of the list, starting with Tallinn. "Eastern European cities are hidden gems for senior citizens," she says. "[They] are perhaps lesser-known vacation destinations, but this study highlights they have plenty to offer for senior citizens."

Tallinn has been experiencing what InsureMyTrip calls "a boom in tourism," with a 33% increase in foreign tourism this year, according to SchengenVisaInfo.com. The quality of things to do (rated 4.61 out of 5) and health care contribute to its high score. This well-preserved medieval city is beautiful to visit anytime, but it's one of our favorite snow-covered towns to visit in winter, when the lights of the Old Town against the snow create plenty of warmth. Any time of year, stroll the historic district and visit the walled fortifications; then stop into a cafe for a coffee or wine.

6. Vilnius, Lithuania

Best for: Attractions

Another Eastern European gem, the Lithuanian city of Vilnius offers great value for your money as soon as you step off the plane. Just taking the train from Vilnius Airport to the city's center is only 89 cents. But it's not just bargain-price travel that make this an appealing destination. The survey found that Vilnius had the best-rated attractions, earning it a rating of 4.66 out of 5 for the quality of things to do there. You'll find a mix of museums, gardens and historic sites, including a Baroque-architecture-filled Old Town. And don't miss the 16th-century Gates of Dawn, which contain an icon from the Virgin Mary.

7. Prague, Czech Republic

Best for: Walking

Prague isn't just one of the top trips for seniors; it's also one of our favorite hidden gems in Europe. The perfectly preserved city has bright red trolleys traversing original cobblestone streets hemmed in by charming stone buildings. Around every corner, you'll find a new treat, like the Charles Bridge, which is lined with majestic stone statues, Michelin-starred restaurants and classic pilsner bars. Another highlight: an entire "castle district" centered around majestic Prague Castle. It ranks high on the survey for its walkability and public transportation, making it an easy city to explore without worrying about needing a ride.

8. Riga, Latvia

Best for: Performing arts

Rounding out the list of under-the-radar gems of Eastern Europe is Latvia's coastal capital city of Riga, which sits right on the Baltic Sea. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a maze of medieval streets dotted with Gothic and Baroque churches and hidden courtyards. The lively new town is an expanse of wide boulevards filled with elegant Art Nouveau architecture.

There's no shortage of places to go in Europe , but Riga scored high for the quality of things to do. One example: The Latvian National Opera dates back to 1782 and presents hundreds of opera and ballet performances throughout the year. Hungry? You're in luck. Riga is the home of the largest food hall in Europe, Riga Central Market.

9. Berlin, Germany

Best for: Museums

A dynamic and modern metropolis, Berlin draws travelers from all corners of the globe to experience its modern arts, nightlife and historic cultural sites, including Museum Island (five popular museums on a Spree River island) and the Brandenburg Gate. Reminders of the city's complicated past—including the graffitied remnants of the Berlin Wall—are ever-present and absolutely worth visiting. Want to experience a different side of Berlin? Go gallery hopping, eat street food at Markthalle Neun, wander through the diverse Kreuzberg neighborhood or see a burlesque show. And don't worry about aging out of Berlin; the InsureMyTrip survey found that the city has one of the highest average ages (48) in the world; only Tokyo ranked higher, with an average age of 49.

10. Helsinki, Finland

Best for: Public transportation

The capital of Finland is one of the least polluted capital cities in the world. One reason, according to The Telegraph , is that residents routinely use public transportation and bicycles to get around (the city makes it easy by maintaining roughly 2,400 miles worth of cycle lanes). It's also the most honest city in the world, according to a Reader's Digest study—in our test, 11 out of 12 people returned a lost wallet.

On the survey, Helsinki also scored high for health services, so you won't have to worry no matter what the day holds. You can bike to Esplanade Park to relax at a free outdoor concert, tour Suomenlinna (Fortress of Finland) or visit one of the seaside city's many museums, including the Finnish Museum of Photography, the contemporary art museum or the National Museum of Finland.
