Chocolatrium? The very word sends sugary shivers down my spine. Chocolatier  Michel Cluziel offers tours and tastings at the West Berlin store, known as the Chocolatrium, a popular destination for  area middle school students since 2013. Various tours and packages are available for adults; check the company website. Good luck keeping your sweet tooth in check.

Hop aboard the Cape May-Lewes Ferry

The  Cape May-Lewes Ferry is more than just a pleasant, stress-free alternative to traffic armageddon on I-95. It makes for a great day or extended trip, with harbors, lighthouses, seabirds and ocean-going ships along the way. On Saturday, ferries depart Cape May at 7 a.m., with the last departure from Lewes at 7:45 p.m. The journey takes about an hour and a half, and there's plenty to do in Lewes, the "First Town in the First State.'' Adult fares are $18 round trip May-June. Bring your car along for $39 one way or $72 round trip.

Go on a Jersey diner pilgrimage

New Jersey is the diner capital of the world , with about 600 diners from top to bottom. What better food road trip than your own ramble through the world of omelets, club sandwiches, meatloaf and cheesecake? Hit one diner for breakfast, another for lunch, one for dinner, and a few more in between! You'll come away with renewed admiration for New Jersey's greatest contribution to culinary culture. Find great bargains - and good food - at a flea market

Yeah, yeah, we know, bunch of people selling others peoples' junk. That may be somewhat true of today's flea markets , but there's great fun to be had wandering down those endless aisles, and there are bargains to be found on everything from socks to LPs to housewares to just plain stuff. The best-known ones are the  Columbus Farmers Market,   Englishtown Auction Sales and the Collingwood Auction & Flea Market; other notable ones include the  New Egypt Flea Market and Berlin Farmers Market. At Columbus you'll find two of the state's better pizzerias: Kate & Al's, and Pete's.

Get lost on a country road

New Jersey is the nation's most densely populated state. It's also full of scenic wonder - farms, forests, mountains, valleys - and country roads begging to be explored.  New Jersey's scenic highways include Route 519 from Colesville to Rosemont; Route 29 from Washington Crossing to Frenchtown; Route 542 from New Gretna to Hammonton; and Route 521 from Montague to Hope. They all show you a New Jersey you never knew existed.

Visit the nation's most decorated battleship

That's the Battleship New Jersey , which was launched Dec. 7, 1942 and saw action during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and in the Middle East. It's now on the Camden waterfront. On a self-guided tour, you can visit the bridge, climb inside the massive 16-inch gun turret, even lay down on a bunk. One great day for a tour: May 24, when you can watch the parade of tall ships along the Delaware River from the battleship.

Bike/run/walk the Delaware & Raritan Canal Towpath

A shady, often-overlooked oasis in the midst of the megalopolis, Delaware & Raritan State Park, 70 miles long in two sections from Frenchtown to New Brunswick, is paradise for walkers, hikers, fishermen, canoeists and folks who just want to lose themselves for a while. Beside the paths, there are tender houses, wooden bridges and remnants of locks, a reminder of an age when freight moved by mule teams or steam tugboats. Scenic spots include Washington Crossing, Bull's Island and Griggstown.

Legally, of course, by visiting the  Burlington County Prison Museum in Mount Holly. Built in 1811, the jail, with its massive front door and interior vaulted ceilings, was in use until November, 1965; up until then, it was the oldest continually used prison in the country. Today, you can wander the ghostly corridors, pop your head in a cell, even visit the dungeon.

Six Flags Great Adventure  is wonderful - one of these days I'll have the guts to ride Kingda Ka, the world's tallest roller coaster - but here we're giving a shout-out to New Jersey's old-school amusement parks, which eschew high-tech bells and whistles for good old-fashioned fun.  The Land of Make Believe in Hope opened in 1954,  Storybook Land in Egg Harbor Township a year later. Gillian's Wonderland Pier i n Ocean City, founded in 1929, is the best-known seaside version, with its Tilt-a-Whirl, bumper cars, carousel and other old-school rides. And don't forget Wild West City .

Meander down Main Street

New Jersey may be the nation's most densely-populated state, but it's also packed with scenic small towns with postcard-perfect main streets (even if they're all not known as "Main Street.'') No part of the state has the franchise on cute, either: Stillwater, Lambertville, Atlantic Highlands, Allentown, Ocean Grove, Frenchtown, Bordentown City and Mauricetown rank among  the state's great small towns. Park the car, and take a leisurely stroll down those tranquil, tree-lined streets. (And go now, not summer, when the crowds intensify.)

OK, New Jersey is not exactly Colorado when it comes to mountains, but that doesn't mean you can't scramble to the top of some Jersey peak and enjoy heart-stopping views. High Point State Park, of course, is the state's highest elevation, but it's hardly a challenge; you can drive up there. For much more exercise, try  Mount Tammany in the Delaware Water Gap (see photo).

You shouldn't have to wait until Veterans Day to honor our veterans; their service should be acknowledged every day of the year. The  Vietnam War Veterans Memorial in Holmdel honors the 1,563 New Jerseyans who made the supreme sacrifice in that war. Engraved on the granite wall at the  Korean War Veterans Memorial on the Atlantic City boardwalk (next to Bally's) are the names of 890 sailors, soldiers, airmen and Marines killed or missing in action. There is also a  World War I Memorial in Atlantic City and a  World War II Memorial in Trenton.

Many gloriously retro hotels and motels, especially in Wildwood Crest, have fallen victim to the wrecking ball in the past decade, but several remain as cool, kitschy alternatives to sterile, run-of-the-mill hotels. There's the  Caribbean Motel in Wildwood Crest, the  Suitcase Motel  in North Wildwood, the  StarLux in Wildwood and the  Lollipop Motel in North Wildwood, among others. The Tour of Somerville,  celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is not merely three days of great cycling (the culminating race, the 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Tour of Somerville on Memorial Day, is known as the Kentucky Derby of cycling). It's pretty much a town-wide block party, with residents cheering on participants from their front lawns, others enjoying the outdoor cafes and live music. Unlock the ocean!

Unlocking the ocean is a little-known Jersey seaside ritual; the first may have been Atlantic City's, which started its ceremony sometime around World War I. The most common version: officials wade into the ocean with a giant wooden key over Memorial Day weekend, signaling the unofficial start of summer. Ocean City's ceremony is undoubtedly the kookiest: Participants march into the water with business suits and briefcases to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance (photo). Does anyone know when the cherry blossom trees bloom at St.Catherine’s? We drove there today (April 7th) and they look bare. Trying to pick a month for our wedding and hoping to catch it when they’re pretty and pink. Thank you!

Located on the southern tip of New Jersey, Cape May is the oldest seaside resort in America. Although it receives praise from travelers thanks to its pristine beaches (The Cove and Sunset Beach are two highly recommended spots), this charming coastal town is also home to more than 600 colorful Victorian-style buildings and one of the largest collections of 19th-century framed buildings in the country. When you're not touring the elegant Emlen Physick Estate or climbing to the top of the historic Cape May Lighthouse, check out the retail stores at Washington Street Mall, an outdoor shopping center that's lined with restaurants, boutiques and art galleries.

Explore New Jersey this spring: 10 botanical gardens and arboretums to visit

best places to visit in nj during spring

There's a reason New Jersey is known as the Garden State.

One of the best parts of spring is exploring greenery and blossoming flowers that come to life as the weather gets warmer. In the North Jersey area, there's an abundance of botanical gardens and arboretums that you can visit to take in the bright spring colors.

Here are ten botanical gardens and arboretums that you can visit this spring:

New Jersey Botanical Garden, Ringwood

Part of Ringwood State Park, the New Jersey Botanical Garden is a must-see in the spring. The 96-acre botanical garden has a wide variety of flowers in bloom during the season, with 12 individual gardens devoted to variations like perennials, lilacs, azaleas, wildflowers, magnolias and even crabapple trees. The grounds also feature an abundance of tree and plant species, ponds and statues.

The New Jersey Botanical Gardens is also home to Skylands Manor, a 1920s-era building with an architectural design reminiscent of the Tudor-revival style. All of the stone included in the building was quarried from the estate.

The New Jersey Botanical Garden is open for self-guided tours daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and you can use the interactive map to explore the grounds. Or, you can participate in a free guided tour offered at 2 p.m. Sundays from May through October.

Go: 2 Morris Road, Ringwood; 973-962-9534, njbg.org .

Rutgers Gardens, North Brunswick

Rutgers Gardens is a 180-acre site, located just down the road from Rutgers University−New Brunswick. It began as a learning space for local farmers, but today consists of designated gardens, plant collections, natural habitats and farms that members of the public are invited to explore.

The botanical garden features 16 gardens and natural areas with blooming spring favorites like perennials, azaleas and lilacs, as well as a bamboo forest and a rain garden. Cook's Market — a farmer's market featuring about 20 vendors with locally grown produce, baked goods and other items — will also take place every Friday beginning May 17.

You can take a self-guided tour throughout Rutgers Gardens, or explore the trails in Helyar Woods behind Rutgers Gardens, Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Go: 112 Log Cabin Road, North Brunswick Township; 848-932-7000, rutgersgardens.rutgers.edu .

Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, Montclair

First started in 1927 as a memorial to Frank H. Presby, a founder of the American Iris Society and a beloved resident of Montclair, the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens is known for its stunning collection of irises that bloom during the spring.

Referred to as "The Rainbow on the Hill," the 6.5-acre garden contains more than 14,000 irises of about 3,000 varieties. Over the course of the spring season — which runs from May 11 to June 2 — there will be more than 100,000 iris blooms. There is also the Bloom Room Gift Shop on the grounds, located in the 1851 historic Walther House.

During bloom season, the garden is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There is no admission fee to enter, a $10 donation is recommended.

Go: 474 Upper Mountain Ave., Montclair; 973-783-5974, presbyirisgardens.org .

Thielke Arboretum, Glen Rock

The Thielke Arboretum is an 16-acre wetland forest centrally located in Glen Rock that features an abundance of nature trails and gardens, as well as a spring-fed pond and Diamond Brook.

With a variety of tree and plant species — many of which are either native to the area or have been recommended by experts at Rutgers University — the arboretum is a natural habitat for birds, water fowl, butterflies, amphibians and other native animals. While walking along the arboretum's trail, you'll see perennial, azalea and grass gardens, and tree species like oak, balsam fir and basswood.

The Thielke Arboretum is free to enter, and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Go: 460 Doremus Ave., Glen Rock; 201-675-0947, thielkearboretum.org .

Van Vleck House & Gardens, Montclair

Originally a 12-acre private estate owned by Joseph Van Vleck Sr. and his family, the grounds were gifted to The Montclair Foundation in 1993. Today, Van Vleck House and Gardens is a non-profit community resource that features a botanical garden with plant species that have been developed over several generations.

The site has 10 separate attractions to explore, including the Wisteria Courtyard — planted by Howard Van Vleck in 1939 — the Formal Garden with perennials and rhododendrons, as well as the Rear Garden and Azalea Walk.

The Van Vleck House and Gardens is open daily from dusk to dawn, and admission is free.

Go: 21 Van Vleck St., Montclair; 973-744-4752, montclairfoundation.org .

Leonard J. Buck Garden, Far Hills

The Leonard J. Buck Garden is a botanical and woodland garden in a 33-acre wooded stream valley. Named after Leonard J. Buck, who developed the garden as part of his estate in the late 1930s, the garden was donated to the Somerset County Park Commission in 1976.

You can explore all of the wildflowers, azaleas, ferns, rhododendrons, alpine trees and much more the garden has to offer by walking along one of its trails. There are also several notable rocks throughout the garden for guests to see as well.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during weekdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.

The arboretum features 29 attractions , including 18 gardens, the Haggerty Education Center, Matilda's Café and an observation deck. The west porch of the original Frelinghuysen Mansion is also open for the public to explore.

As the name suggests, the Essex County Rose Garden is known for having more than 500 individual rose bushes with nearly 150 different varieties. The rose beds are arranged by color, including red, pink, yellow, white, orange, mauve and bi-color. The garden offers an online directory to explain the types of roses in each flower bed.

Plan a park day

During spring break, heading to a state park is a must—pack a picnic and go out and explore what NJ has to offer. From the promenade at Liberty State Park to spending time in the sand at a historic lighthouse at Cape May Point, there’s an NJ state park that will wow your family. Or stick to a local one , where you can find unique vistas and wide-open places to enjoy a hike, fishing, or a picnic.

See blooms in the gardens

Taking time to smell the flowers in a public garden space is a good way to relax and let your kids discover the beauty of natural spaces. And with so many gardens in our Garden State, you can find famous ones or even lesser-known spots to spend time in, especially during the beginning of April when buds bloom. Head north to Van Vleck House or south to Deep Cut Gardens and read The Best Garden and Nature Centers in New Jersey for more places to go.

Climb to the top of a lighthouse

There’s no better place to see shore views on a clear day than at the top of an NJ lighthouse. With Sandy Hook to the north, Absecon Lighthouse (NJ’s tallest and is open every day during spring break) to the south, and Finn’s Point out west, there are many options to see a lighthouse or lightship in the state. Not sure where to start? Our guide to NJ lighthouses  will show you the way.

Walking among the cherry blossoms is always a good idea. Photo taken at Branch Brook Park

See cherry blossoms without going to Washington, DC.

Cherry blossoms are peaking during spring break this year, so skip the trip to DC and stay local. In fact, Branch Brook Park in Newark has more cherry blossom trees than our nation’s capital. Peak blooms are expected during the first week of April, and their Cherry Blossom Festival starts on April 6, with activities happening through April 14. Can’t make it there? Find plenty of spots in NJ to see these beauties at their best. But go quick—the peak lasts about a week and usually happens at the beginning of April.

Find ways to jump around inside

If your kids are literally climbing the walls, go to where they can do it happily at one of the playspaces just for them all over the state. Wherever your littles let their sillies out, you can guarantee a naptime (even on the car ride home). And for older kids trying to couch surf at home, going to  a trampoline park will give them an excellent way to get their energy out.

Bike and hike the Garden State

Biking and hiking are two spring break activities you can do whenever the mood strikes. Ride through towns and trails or discover a new bike path with our NJMOM guide to NJ’s most scenic bike paths. Need some wheels? Find a smooth ride at the best bike shops around . Or, for family-friendly hikes that appeal to all ages, explore our list of NJ hiking trails you’ll want to know about.

Discover a new (to you) attraction

From Lucy The Elephant to Battleship New Jersey , spring break is a great time to cross off one of these  NJ attractions on your bucket list. Whether you are looking for a free NJ attraction like Big Brook Park Preserve to search for fossils or a strange attraction like the Martian Landing site in West Windsor, you can find so many new things to do to keep your spring break calendar full all week long.

Shore Towns That Are Even Better in the Spring

Historic Smithville

D oes the air feel different to you lately? You might have noticed that missing chill, the way it doesn’t sting your face when you step outside your house? That’s right, spring has officially made its way to our little corner of the world. And there’s no better place to enjoy it than one of New Jersey’s many shore towns.

And while we’re this close to summer days spent in the sand and sun, there are plenty of reasons to hop in your car and head down the shore for the spring. Here are a few places to enjoy the first warm weeks of the year in the Garden State.

Belmar is a sweet little beach town, and the absolute perfect spot for a day trip. When summer’s in full swing, Belmar is host to a mix of families and twenty-somethings trying to keep it on the classier side — all while maintaining close proximity to some of the best shore nightlife in the state: D’Jais, Bar Anticipation, and The Headliner to name a few. To beat the crowds and still have an awesome Belmar experience, plan your visit for one or both of the below events.

Color Me Belmar 3K & PossAbilities Walk

Date: May 7 Location: Belmar Beach, First Avenue at Ocean Avenue Wear some clothing you don’t mind ruining for a colorful sprint through Belmar! Register for the 100-yard dash which features two color stations (i.e., places where people toss brightly colored powder on you), or the 3K Color Run, which features five color stations and takes place directly on the beach. For something more low-key, there’s the Family Resource Associates PossAbilities Walk on the boardwalk. For those of you less inclined to sweat it out, there will be face painting, a DJ, Frisbees, and a paint-throwing party (which is exactly what it sounds like). More details here.

New Jersey Seafood Festival

Dates: May 14 – May 15 Location: Silver Lake Park, 500 Ocean Avenue Foodies, rejoice! Belmar’s annual Seafood Festival celebrates its 30 th anniversary this year and it’s a can’t-miss event for sure. This family-friendly festival promises amazing seafood (obviously), wine and craft beer, and more. A full list of vendors and events will be available as the festival nears. More details here.

Belmar Beach

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP

Galloway is a coastal town just north of Atlantic City, but it doesn’t necessarily consider itself a beach town — most likely because there isn’t a public beach here. I know, I know, this is an article about shore towns, but this is technically down the shore. And Galloway is home to is the wonderful Historic Smithville, which is hosting some fantastic events this season. Here you go:

Historic Smithville’s Renaissance Faire

Dates: April 30 – May 1 Location: Historic Smithville, 615 East Moss Mill Road Don’t miss historic Smithville’s transformation from village to shire this spring! Catch some Shakespeare, take in a comedic swordfight, and enjoy the song and dance of days gone way by. In addition to all of the entertainment, the faire will also feature a bevy of vendors selling gorgeous, hand-crafted wares. And when you’re all shopped out and have some time to kill between shows, there will be paddle boating, face painting, archery, and train and carousel rides available all day. More details here.

Dates: May 14 – May 15 Location: Historic Smithville, 615 East Moss Mill Road Smithville’s annual Mayfest is back again to celebrate the point in the year when there’s absolutely no going back: It’s going to be warm for the foreseeable future and we’re all safe to start bouncing off the walls with joy. With more than 100 vendors in attendance to sell crafts and food, Mayfest is the place to get adventurous and take advantage of all of the unique options available to you. And you won’t be eating and shopping in silence, there will be musical acts on hand as well! More details here.

CAPE MAY & WILDWOOD

They’re neighbors at the tip of the Jersey Shore, so if you’re going to check out one, it’s worth it to visit the other. If these two spots were siblings, Cape May would be the mature, older and more refined one, while Wildwood would be the edgier one, but still reflecting the classy qualities of its sibling. And that, my friends, was a really complicated way to say that Wildwood has a crazy cool boardwalk and Cape May has a row of sweet little shops lining a cobblestone road. Here’s when you want to make a date with the Maywood siblings. (See what I did there?)

Spring Fling

Date: April 30 Location: Natali Vineyards, 221 North Delsea Drive, Cape May Court House Head down to Natali Vineyards to help ring in what is arguably the best time of year to be sitting outside with a glass of wine. The Geno White Trio will be on hand to provide the entertainment for the day, while you taste the different wines (or sangria) offered at Natali Vineyard. There will also be food vendors and games, so bring the kids, bring the dogs, and have a nice little vineyard picnic with the crew. More details here.

Wildwood Beer Fest

Dates: June 10 – June 11 Location: Fox Park (across the street from Wildwood Convention Center, 4501 Boardwalk) Wildwood’s Second Annual Beer Fest will welcome local brew masters to bring their best brews to the Jersey Shore for two days of music, food, and appreciation for the art of the perfect pour. There will be more than 100 different beers to sample, so get out and support local breweries — and maybe even find some new favorites near you. More details here.

Red Bank is a shore town that isn’t quite a beach town — making it a perfect destination for spring. This charming little spot is best known for its incredible restaurants and chic boutiques. Springtime can be a magical and refreshing time to travel. Maybe you’re coming out from winter hibernation for a quick road trip, or you’re finally able to break in those new hiking boots you were gifted for Christmas. Personally, I look forward to blooms and greenery after nature wakes up from her winter slumber. Everything feels fresh, new, and exciting.

The Lyrids begin this week. How to see first major meteor shower of spring when it peaks

While the april 8 eclipse was only viewable in north america, the lyrids should be visible pretty much around the world..

A week after that stunning total solar eclipse , the Lyrid meteor shower is about to give sky-gazers plenty of reasons to once again look toward the cosmos.

One of the oldest-known meteor showers  on record, the Lyrids has peaked like clockwork every late April for thousands of years. And while that peak won't be occurring until Saturday, you still have a chance to see the soaring meteors beginning Monday.

The best part? While the April 8 eclipse was only viewable in North America, the Lyrids should be visible pretty much around the world .

Here's what to know about the Lyrid meteor shower .

Out of this world: From Stanley cups to Samsung phones, this duo's company launches almost anything into space

Where do the Lyrid meteors come from?

Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris trails left by comets and other space objects. The debris – space rocks known as meteoroids – collides with Earth's atmosphere at high speed and disintegrates, creating fiery and colorful streaks in the sky, according to NASA .

Those resulting fireballs, better known as "shooting stars," are meteors. Those meteoroids that survive their trip to Earth without burning up in the atmosphere are called meteorites, NASA says .

Named for the nearby constellation Lyra, the Lyrid meteor shower is composed of pieces of debris  from the Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher . The comet is named for A. E. Thatcher, who discovered it in 1861.

The meteor shower itself, though, has been observed for 2,700 years ever since the first recorded sighting was made in 687 BC by the Chinese, according to NASA .

How can we see the Lyrid meteor shower?

The Lyrids are known as one of  four major meteor showers each year  that have a sharp peak. This year, that peak falls between April 21-22,  according to EarthSky.org .

However, the meteor shower could be visible anytime beginning Monday.

According to NASA, the best view in the Northern Hemisphere of the shower is after moonset and before dawn.

Here are tips from the U.S. space agency:

  • Pick an area well away from city lights or street lights.
  • Bring a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair.
  • Lie flat on your back with your feet facing east and look up.
  • Be patient. About 30 minutes in the dark your eyes should adapt and you should begin to see meteors.

How many Lyrids will we see per hour?

The first meteor shower of the spring , the fast and bright meteors of the Lyrids will appear to be flying across the night sky.

While  NASA notes  that the Lyrids can surprise watchers with as many as 100 meteors seen per hour, in general, 10-20 Lyrid meteors can be seen per hour during the peak.

Lyrids don’t tend to leave long, glowing dust trains behind them as they streak through the Earth's atmosphere. However, they can produce the occasional bright flash called a fireball.

Where can I see a Florida rocket launch in Brevard County?

Here's what we know about the rocket launch missions, mentioned in  FLORIDA TODAY's rocket launch calendar  for the month, which is updated frequently. (Check that link often for rocket launch times and dates.)

Pretty much anywhere  in Brevard, you'll get a view of the rocket  launch. The best views to watch a rocket launch from the Space Coast is along the beach. However, visibility will depend on weather conditions and people should make sure not to block traffic or rights of way on bridges and to follow posted rules at beaches.

If you are viewing the launch along the Indian River in Titusville from Space View Park or Parrish Park, look east directly across the river.

If you are further south along the Indian River, look northeast.

Playalinda Beach or Canaveral National Seashore is the closest spot to view liftoff because it is almost parallel to Launch Pad 39A. On the beach, look south along the coastline, (you can even see the pad from some spots).

Some hotspots to check out:

• Jetty Park Beach and Pier, 400 Jetty Park Road,  Port Canaveral . Note, there's a charge to park.

• Playalinda Beach, 1000 Playalinda Beach Road, Canaveral National Seashore. Note, there's a charge to park, and access to Canaveral National Seashore isn't always granted depending on capacity and time of day.

• Max Brewer Bridge and Parrish Park, 1 A. Max Brewer Memorial Parkway, Titusville. Note, parking is available on both sides of Max Brewer Bridge.

• Space View Park, 8 Broad St., Titusville

• Sand Point Park, 10 E. Max Brewer Causeway, Titusville

• Rotary Riverfront Park, 4141 S. Washington Ave., Titusville

• Alan Shepard Park, 299 E. Cocoa Beach Causeway, Cocoa Beach. Note, there could be parking costs.

• Cocoa Beach Pier, 401 Meade Ave. Parking fee varies.

• Lori Wilson Park, 1400 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach. Lori Wilson Park has a dog park, by the way.

• Sidney Fischer Park, 2200 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach. Note, there could be parking costs.

• Sebastian Inlet Park, 9700 S. State Road A1A, Melbourne Beach (there is a cost to enter)

• Ambersands Beach Park, 12566 N. SR A1A, Vero Beach (free parking)

• South Beach Park, 1700 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach (free parking)

• Alma Lee Loy Bridge in Vero Beach

• Merrill Barber Bridge in Vero Beach

Lyrid meteor shower 2024: How to watch stunning shooting stars and 'fireballs' during the event's peak this week

The annual Lyrid meteor shower peaks between April 21 and 22 this year, potentially offering views of hundreds of shooting stars and rare "fireballs." Here's where and when to catch the cosmic light show.

Time-lapse image of meteors streaking across the night sky

The Lyrid meteor shower has officially begun and the sky show's spectacular peak, which could see hundreds of shooting stars and "fireballs" fill the night sky, is scheduled to begin later this week. But what are the Lyrids? When exactly do they peak? And where is the best place to look for them?

The Lyrids, which were first observed by humans around 2,700 years ago, are one of the oldest meteor showers on record, according to NASA . They are not quite as magnificent as some other meteor showers, such as the Perseids . However, at their best, the Lyrids are known to produce bright exploding space rocks, known as fireball meteors , and leave persistent trails of light, known as meteor trains, that remain in the sky for several seconds.

These meteors come from the dusty trail left behind by Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher , which orbits the sun every 415.5 years. Once a year, Earth passes through the comet's expansive debris field, causing disconnected chunks of the comet to burn up in our atmosphere, giving the impression of shooting stars racing across the night sky.

The annual event normally lasts for around two weeks in April but is most prominent during a roughly day-long peak. This year, the Lyrids began on April 15 and will continue until April 29. However, they will peak between Sunday (April 21) and Monday (April 22).

Normally, dozens of meteors light up the sky every hour during this period, according to NASA. But this shower is also known for rare surges that can bring as many as 100 meteors an hour. However, this has only happened a handful of times over the last 200 years.

Unfortunately, this year's peak coincides with an almost full "pink moon," which will become full on April 23 . As a result, the light from our cosmic companion will obscure most of the peak, meaning the meteors will likely not be as spectacular as in other years, EarthSky reported .

But don't let this put you off.

The best time to see the Lyrids will be just before dawn on April 22 when the moon is at its lowest. At this point, you should still be able to see dozens of bright meteors — as long as there isn't too much cloud cover or light pollution near you.

The shower is best viewed with the naked eye anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Even the best telescopes and stargazing binoculars will only impede your view during a meteor shower — though there will be plenty of other great stargazing opportunities in 2024 to use them.

— Eerie green fireball detected hours before smashing into Lake Ontario

— Meteorites from flaming fireball over Mississippi scattered across the state

— Watch a gargantuan fireball tumble over New York in the dead of night

The meteors' radiant — the point in the sky where they appear to be coming from — is around Vega in the constellation Lyra, also known as the Harp — but they can appear anywhere in the sky. Vega is one of the brightest stars in the sky so it shouldn't be too hard to find. However, NASA recommends that you look slightly away from the radiant so you can see longer, stretched-out shooting stars. If you look head-on, they will appear to be much more truncated.

For the best views, head to a viewing spot away from city lights. You can consult a light pollution map to find dark areas with the best chances of seeing the shooting stars.

If you miss the peak, don't worry. If you go outside on the nights either side of the peak and look up for at least half an hour or so, you should still be able to spot at least one of these space rocks twinkle in the sky as they die a fiery death.
