That was a memorable experience! We loved the cities we visited, the amazing local guides and our favourite tour guide Rene, who loked after us very well. We will definitely go back to Budapest and Prague, loved those cities a lot.

Budapest to Bucharest Tour

  • Coach / Bus

Budapest to Bucharest

My guide talked a lot about the medieval history in the places we visited but I would surely have liked to hear a little less of that and more about the 1900-2000 phase of history, like what life was like under communism, how things changed once communists were overthrown, what happened in the countries during WW II, etc The only guide that really delved into that was our local guide in Bucharest, who I thought was excellent. Also, for my part, and I realize you have to provide something for all tastes, but the time in the big cities was less enjoyable than the time spent out in the countryside. The city walking tours were overlong for my taste. My guide was very helpful and friendly, no problems there..

Sasa Tour Guide and Andro the driver were great. They took care of the group with their jovial attitude and ensured that individual's needs were met. They provided easy to follow directions and kept the group together. There were occasions when things would have gone wrong but Sasa and Andro ensured that they are there on every step along the way to make it trouble-free and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend intrepid tours and would consider future tours through Intrepid.

8 days - Imperial Danube (Vienna - Budapest - Vienna, MS Crucestar 4*)

We had cruised on the Crucevita previously and found this cruise on the Crucestar did not compare. While the cruise itinerary/staff/excursions were all excellent, the onboard experience was not the same. Hot, cooked breakfast items were not kept on warmers so were always cold(eggs, bacon, etc) and could not get a hot coffee. This was expressed by all on board and we were anxious to get into our ports in search of a hot breakfast. If this was addressed, it would have been a different review.

I am very happy with my experience of Tour Radar. The trip to Budapest was great and Tour Radar was extremely helpful with any questions I had regarding the trip and the area. They provided a clear itinerary before the trip as well as offered suggestions of other things in the city that might be of interest. I would definitely book with Tour Radar again!

Danube Classics Vienna 2024 Tour

Al-Rosa did an excellent job. Food was good and lots of it, the cabin was clean and comfortable. The staff were always friendly and helpful and Sabrina did a great job of looking after everyone and made sure that we were always at the right place at the right time. The tours were great and we enjoyed our evenings in the lounge with music and quizzes by Erich. We had a great holiday!

Budapest - Vienna - Salzburg Tour

  • Sightseeing

Budapest - Vienna - Salzburg

Awesome trip to three incredible destinations. All very different from Budapest (one of the more unique European cities I've been to) to Vienna (very grand) to Salzburg (like something from a postcard with the castle over the city, the architecture and surrounded by Alps). I was lucky enough to do the the trip at the end of November when each city had the Christmas markets, and Salzburg's mountains were covered in snow. Any trips during the winter months are beautiful there. Highlight of the trip though was definitely Budapest. Really beautiful city, on a big scale, and super fun and cheap. Started our Friday off with the walking tour (Peter was a top notch guide), that afternoon at the Szechenyi baths, and then a night cruise and party on the Danube river. Trip was put together incredibly well with a busy, but efficient itinerary (it's a busy weekend so there is travel each day) so you see and experience the three cities in a weekend. Hostels were great as were the included tours and also optional stuff like the thermal bath and night cruise in Budapest, night out at the Bermuda Triangle bar area in Vienna and Sound of Music tour in Salzburg (and after the beer stop at Augustiner!). Trip leader was super friendly, helpful and professional. Definitely recommend Euroadventures for a great experience and trip!

Prague, Vienna & Budapest Tour

Prague, Vienna & Budapest

I was so hoping that this tour operation would work well for us, as it had the elements we are looking for ie Land transportation details all looked after, taxis, trains and shuttle to and from airport. Perfect. Breakfast every day was included, leaving us to consume other meals when and where we wanted to.Perfect. One half day tour in each city we visited, to get our bearings, and then leaving us alone for the remainder of the time to wander and discover. Perfect. Accommodation, BASIC (the room in Vienna looked/felt more like a dorm room) and clean, was far away from anywhere we wanted to be, ie far from the historical areas and interesting sites. For this reason, alone, we will not use this tour service again. A traveller needs to be central to the sights and sounds of the city (ie NOT the sounds of the tram going by every 15 mins as was the case in Vienna- windows had to be open, as there were no controls for the heating in the room, and it was HOT in March.)

The beautiful blue Danube (port-to-port cruise) Tour

The beautiful blue Danube (port-to-port cruise)

The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise

What people love about Budapest Tours

Wonderful cities, well-organised, and great value. Shout out to our guide, Jacob, who was as informative and professional as you'd expect, but also adaptable when things out of his control were going wrong (traffic, weather, etc.) And the driver, Nathan, who was always helpful and reliable - almost like a second tour guide.
A well planned trip with some surprising accommodation stops. We were amazed at how much we enjoyed our trip, and can highly recommend it.
Sasa Tour Guide and Andro the driver were great. They took care of the group with their jovial attitude and ensured that individual's needs were met. Budapest - tour highlights and travel tips.

The Chain Bridge

Anyone who decides to spend their holidays in Budapest will get to experience the intriguing blend of the European bohemian vibe and accelerated urban buzz, all set against the majestic backdrop of Habsburg-style architecture. A trip to Budapest will allow you to unlock cultural riches and off-the- beaten-path spots hiding in various nooks scattered around the dynamic Hungarian capital.

Travel Highlights

  • The eye-catching Hungarian Parliament building is also the third largest parliament building in the world. The symbol of Budapest features a stunning white Gothic façade, 10 courtyards and a whopping 619 rooms.
  • Buda Castle, an opulent royal building, is also among Budapest’s most famouslandmarks. This glorious structure sits atop of the Castle Hill overlooking the Danube, and can be seen from various points in the city.
  • A stroll along the breathtaking Chain Bridge will open up a panorama of both Buda and Pest districts, as well as the Danube River that flows between them.
  • Memento Park is an open-air museum located outside of the city center. It features a vast collection of now disused public works of art originating from the country’s socialist era.

Travel Tips

  • No visit to Budapest is completed without trying the belly-warming Hungarian snack called lángos. This delicious doughy delicacy, usually topped with cheese or sour cream, will be a welcome energy-booster after a day of sightseeing.
  • To truly soak up the city’s buzzing bar scene, make sure to visit one of Budapest’s many ruin bars. Once existing as stores or warehouses, these repurposed spaces are nowadays among the hottest nightlife spots for the Hungarian youth. You’ll find most of them in the old District VII.
  • For ultimate relaxation, check out one of the iconic Budapest spas. Nothing will be more satisfying after a day of sightseeing than unwinding in one of the lush thermal baths. Two of the most popular spas in Budapest are Széchenyi and Gellért.

Budapest Parliament Tour Review – An Unforgettable Experience

  • 2024-03-07 2024-03-07

Welcome to our detailed review of the Budapest Parliament tour, one of the most iconic attractions in Hungary’s capital city. In this blog post, we will guide you through the highlights of the tour and provide you with all the information you need to make the most out of your visit.

1. Introduction to the Budapest Parliament

The Hungarian Parliament Building, also known as the Budapest Parliament, is an architectural masterpiece located on the banks of the Danube River. Built in the 19th century, this neo-Gothic style structure is not only a symbol of Hungary’s rich history but also one of the largest parliamentary buildings in the world.

2. Booking Your Budapest Parliament Tour

Before embarking on your journey, it’s crucial to book your tour in advance to secure your spot. The Budapest Parliament tours are in high demand, especially during peak tourist seasons.

There are several ways to book your tour:

  • Online: Visit the official website of the Hungarian Parliament and book your tickets directly.
  • Through Tour Operators: Many local tour operators offer guided tours to the Budapest Parliament as part of their itinerary. Research and choose a reputable operator for a hassle-free experience.
  • In Person: If you prefer spontaneity, you can purchase tickets on the day of your visit at the ticket office near the entrance of the Parliament. However, be prepared for long queues, especially during peak hours.

It’s advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled tour time to allow for security checks and to explore the surroundings.

3. The Tour Experience

Once you’ve completed the necessary ticketing formalities, your Budapest Parliament tour will commence. Here’s what you can expect:

3.1 Security Checks

For security reasons, visitors are required to go through airport-like security checks. Ensure that you do not carry any prohibited items such as knives or large bags to expedite the process.

3.2 English-speaking Guides

The Budapest Parliament tour includes a knowledgeable guide who will provide you with interesting insights into the history, architecture, and significance of the building. The guides generally speak multiple languages, including English.

3.3 Highlights of the Tour

During the tour, you will have the opportunity to explore the most striking sections of the Parliament, including:

These are just a few examples of the stunning rooms and sights you’ll encounter during the tour. Each room showcases intricate details that capture the grandeur of the Hungarian Parliament.

3.4 Duration and Accessibility

The guided Budapest Parliament tour typically lasts for approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The building is wheelchair accessible, and there are elevators available for visitors with mobility challenges.

4. Insider Tips for an enhanced experience

Here are some valuable tips to maximize your enjoyment during the Budapest Parliament tour:

  • Photography: Photography is allowed inside the Parliament, but flash photography and tripods are prohibited. Capture the essence of the building without disturbing other visitors.
  • Comfortable Shoes: The tour involves a fair amount of walking, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
  • Time Your Visit: Consider visiting the Parliament early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds.
  • Additional Attractions: Combine your Parliament tour with a visit to nearby attractions such as the Chain Bridge or Margaret Island to make the most of your time in Budapest.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can enhance your overall experience and create lasting memories of your Budapest Parliament tour.

5. Conclusion

The Budapest Parliament tour offers an unforgettable experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in Hungary’s rich history and architectural grandeur. From the moment you step inside, you’ll be mesmerized by the opulence and beauty of this iconic landmark.

Remember to book your tickets in advance, arrive early, and follow the security guidelines for a seamless journey. Capture the breathtaking interiors, listen to the fascinating stories of your guide, and don’t forget to enjoy every moment of this remarkable tour.

South of Liberty Bridge are two nice-to-see-but-not-obligatory landmarks, the National Theatre (below) and the Palace of Arts (above), which are as beautiful as the Parliament and Buda Castle.

1. Best Sightseeing Cruise Overall With Welcome Drink and Audio Guide

The illuminated Budapest Parliament at night, from the perspective of a Danube river cruise.

✔️ Best All-Around  — This cruise has it all for a complete sightseeing experience.

✔️ Welcome Drink  — Choose champagne, wine, beer, a soft drink, or mineral water.

✔️ Great Ship  — Modern, spacious, and well-kept, offering superb views from both decks.

✔️ Audio Guide  — Crystal-clear sound quality via headphones, and available in 30 languages.

✔️ Full Danube Curcuit  — Covers all the must-see and off-beat landmarks, from Margaret Island to the National Theatre/Palace of Arts.

✔️ Family Friendly - Generous discounts for children, including free tickets for ages 0-9 and 50% for ages 10-14.

❌  Pricy  — It's a bit more expensive than other cruises, but the added value makes up for it.

❌  Missing Free Lemonade  — It's not highlighted that the free lemonade is only offered in the summer season.

❌  Headphone Challenges and Hiccups  — The first pair didn't work, the second had a cable that was too short for my height (I'm 190cm), and the third functional pair lacked optimal comfort.

💡 Tip: All cruises have a generous cancellation policy , allowing a full refund if canceled 24 hours before the activity. Additionally, they offer a reserve now, pay later flexible payment scheme.

Legenda's river cruise offers a complete sightseeing experience with a  welcome drink  and an  audio guide in 30 languages.

Their  ship is modern and spacious , providing excellent views from both decks.

The  itinerary covers the iconic sights from Margaret Island to the National Theatre and Palace of Arts.

This cruise is  pricy but offers more value that backs up the higher price. The audio guide has clear sound quality through headphones but needs improvement in content quality and headphone comfort.

Overall, this cruise provides a  high-quality sightseeing experience with no major negatives , which is why it's number one on this list.

Detailed Breakdown

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. The  best spot for sightseeing  on this cruise is the  top deck .
  • The cruise itinerary covers all of Budapest's landmarks, including the National Opera and the Palace of Arts.
💡 Tip:  For the best sightseeing and photo opportunities , choose a ship with large open-air decks that offer unobstructed 360° views like Legenda, Rubin Group, and Portum.

The Upper Deck

  • It's spacious with unobstructed 360° views from every angle. Ideal for photography and soaking in the city's beauty. Blankets are available upon request.

The Audio Guide

The audio guide controller and headphones on Legenda City Cruises' sightseeing boat.

  • This was the only audio guide could actually be heard out of all the cruises, thanks to the headphones, as the other ships have loudspeakers.
  • The audio quality was excellent , and the narration was available in 30 languages.
  • There's room for improvement contentwise. Around half of the mentioned sights aren't relevant to riverside attractions. Plus, the c ontent could dive deeper into the city's history, culture, and be more historically correct instead of telling stories, trivia and myths.
  • I encountered some issues with the headphones - the first set was defective, the second set had a cable that was too short, and the third set was uncomfortable and hard to wear.
💡 All the other cruises offer loudspeaker audio guides. Loudspeaker audio guides are often inaudible due to passenger noise. Other common issues include un-synced commentary, irrelevant sights/details mentioned, and infrequent audio.

2. Budapest Night Booze Cruise with Unlimited Prosecco and Lemonade

A row of glasses with prosecco on Rubin Group's booze cruise.

✔️  #1 Most Affordable Booze Cruise  — Experience Budapest's most economical unlimited prosecco cruise on the Danube.

✔️  Excellent Ship — The ship features a charming open-air top deck and two indoor decks with a sophisticated cocktail party-like ambiance.

✔️  Unlimited Drinks  — Drink all the prosecco and lemonade you want.

✔️  Leisurely 90-Minute Ride  — More than enough time to savor your drinks, though drinking responsibly is advised by your friends at Prosecco and Co.

❌ Mediocre Food Platter — For an extra 10€, the food platter is disappointing and hardly qualifies as 'gourmet.'

❌ Remote Meeting Point — The departure area near Margaret Island is not easily accessible.

❌ Inaudible Audio Guide — The ambient noise from passengers drowns out the audio guide, but most are too busy enjoying their drinks to notice.

❓ Is buying food or drinks while on a river cruise in Budapest possible? 💡 Food is not typically included on standard sightseeing cruises. However, you can purchase snacks and drinks at the ship's kitchen bar.

The Rubin Group's boat tour is an excellent choice for those seeking an affordable cocktail-party atmosphere with unlimited prosecco and lemonade. The attentive servers are always on hand to keep guests' glasses full.

The top deck boasts breathtaking 360° views of the cityscape during the 90-minute river cruise, while the two indoor decks offer a cozy and inviting ambiance.

As for the less rosy aspects of this cruise, the optional food platter isn't worth the 10€ price, and the audio guide may be difficult to hear over the party noise. Additionally, the meeting point is further from the city center, so getting there may take some extra time and effort.

Overall, if you're looking for a leisurely cruise centered around drinks and stunning views, Rubin Group's boat tour is an outstanding choice.

About Rubin Group

Rubin Group   is another solid company, operating since (at least) 2015. They specialize in gastro-themed events rather than standard sightseeing cruises.

  • The first passengers to board tend to get the best top deck spots, so it's  worth arriving early   if you want a prime spot .

The Drinks Refills

  • The  servers were   attentive , constantly  refilling glasses  with prosecco as soon as they were empty.
  • Self-service lemonade  is available in two flavors — regular and one with a strange cucumber taste.

The Assorted Food Platter

Assorted food platter on Rubin Group's booze cruise.

  • The optional assorted food platter for 10€ wasn't what I was expecting.
  • It didn't match the advertised images and wasn't gourmet but ordinary , including simple fruits and vegetables, cheese and ham with two sauces, and a pastry dessert. The portion size was smaller than expected.
  • Save your money and skip the platter.
  • The loudspeaker  audio guide was inaudible  due to the passengers crowding out the narration.
  • They increased the volume upon my request, but the  audio guide's content was too basic .
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 19:00 and 21:00
  • ❌ Pets allowed: no, except service animals
  • ❌ Wheelchair accessible: no
  • ✔️ Baby stroller accessible: yes (at least the bottom deck)
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-3)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest, Szent István park 5, 1137
  • ❌ The meeting point is north of Margaret Bridge , which is slightly out of the way compared to other centrally located cruises.
  • 🗺️ Use the 2 or 4/6 tram line  and get off at Jászai Mari tér . From there, walk 500 meters towards the north of Margaret Bridge until you spot a large red "0" sign .

3. Best Value Sightseeing Cruise With Welcome Drink

The Budapest Palace during the day, from the perspective of Portum Lines Crusing's sightseeing cruise.

✔️  Exceptional Value  — Costs 40-50% less than Legenda, while still offering a stellar experience, albeit with fewer non-essential amenities (such as audio guides and complimentary lemonade).

✔️  Fun and Lively — This cruise attracts a younger crowd, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

✔️  Welcome Drink  — Options include prosecco, a seasonal cocktail, mulled wine, or a soft drink.

✔️ Great Ship  — The ship is modern, spacious, and well-maintained, with excellent views from both its decks.

❌  Inconvenient Location  — The meeting point near Margaret Island is not in the city center, thus getting there is a hassle.

❌  Prone to Crowding — The ship may feel cramped during peak travel times, especially the top deck.

❌  Limited Open Air Seats  — The coveted open-air tables on the top deck are claimed quickly and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

❓  Is it possible to reserve seats on river cruises? 💡 Seats on most river cruises are assigned on a  first-come, first-served  basis. But some dinner cruises might let you reserve a specific spot.

Portum Lines Cruising is an excellent  alternative to Legenda , offering a  lively and fun  sightseeing experience that's especially  popular with younger crowds .

Upon arrival, guests receive a  complimentary welcome drink of  prosecco, seasonal cocktails, mulled wine, or a soft drink.

While they  don't offer  amenities like an  audio guide or complimentary lemonade , the ship is modern and well-maintained, with  excellent views  of Budapest's top sights.

The  top deck  offers both open-air 360° and weather-protected roof-covered sections. While the  lower level  is cozy and comfortable, it's  best to head upstairs  to enjoy the views.

Reaching the  meeting point is inconvenient , and the  ship can get crowded  due to its popularity, especially on the top deck.

Overall, Portum Lines offers an  exceptional river cruise  experience at  great value , perfect for those seeking a fun atmosphere.

4. No Frills Budget Sightseeing Cruise

budapest tour review

When it comes to Budapest cruises, Silverline Sightseeing Cruise is a solid choice with friendly staff and a comfortable meeting point, but it doesn't quite stand out from the crowd.

Unlike most cruises, Silverline's cruise ticket does not include a welcome drink . However, the price is on the low-end . If it were not for their out-of-the-way location, I would recommend the Portum's similarly cheap cruise in a heartbeat.

With a relaxed 70-minute cruising time, this ride offers a leisurely pace that allows you to take in the sights and enjoy the moment.

They used to offer an audio guide , but it suffered from the common issue of being drowned out by the crowd's noise and not being in sync with the landmarks. They seem to have done away with it altogether.

In summary, Silverline's sightseeing cruise provides a leisurely tour of Budapest's iconic landmarks on the Danube. While not exceptional, it offers a decent experience.

About Silverline Cruises Ltd.

Silverline is a solid company operating since (at least) 2011. They have a decent range of cruise offerings, and run popular cruises in the sightseeing category.

budapest tour review

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. However, Silverline's ships have a roof and support columns on the top deck which means they do not provide a clear 360° view .

budapest tour review

  • The ship itself is decent , but it doesn't claim the title of the most modern or spacious vessel on the waters. It gets the job done without being overly impressive.
  • Silverline rotates boats frequently, so you may not get the same one I did.

budapest tour review

  • During my trip, I was on the larger two-level boat that previously had rows of seats, but has since been replaced with tables and chairs (according to photos).
  • The smaller boat now has the rows of seats , which I found to be cramped and lacking in legroom .
  • Both ships have roofs and support columns which partially block the view .

The Main Deck

budapest tour review

  • The main deck offers comfort with ample space, heating, and air conditioning . While indoor views are average , better panoramas await at the front chairs or the open-air section.
  • Welcoming and friendly staff at the entrance make a positive impression. I haven't interacted with the ship's crew so I cannot comment on that.

Unneccesary Stop

  • During my cruise, we made a stop at Batthyány tér (Buda) , even though no passengers got on or off.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm.

  • 🗺️ Use tram line 2 to arrive at Széchenyi István tér or Március 15 tér stop . Go towards Elizabeth bridge (white suspension bridge) and look for Silverline Cruises .

5. Best Cocktail Cruise With Three Cocktails

  • The lower deck doesn't offer great opportunities for sightseeing or taking photos.

6. Budapest Dinner Cruise with Buffet Libre, Folk Dance Show & Music

The dinner area of Hungaria Koncert's river cruise boat with guests enjoying themselves.

✔️  Buffet Libre  — this dinner cruise is a great way to taste various Hungarian dishes.

✔️  Two Welcome Drinks  — you can choose from various alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.

✔️  Great Atmosphere  — you feel like you're in an early 20th century cabaret and forget about the outside world for 2 hours.

✔️  Folk Dance and Music Show  — features one of the best live folklore music and dance shows with authentic and award-winning performers.

✔️  Full Danube Circuit  — the cruise covers everything worth seeing, from Margaret Island all the way down to the National Theatre/Palace of Arts.

✔️  Long Cruise  — the cruise lasts 1.5-2 hours, which gives ample time to eat, drink and see the sights at night.

❌  Not Great for Sightseeing  — the views from the ship are mediocre (no 360°, fences blocking the view), spaces for sightseeing are both few/small, the dinner and folk show are more interesting so you'll focus on that and won't see the sights.

❌  Not Fine Dining Quality  — the food is fine, but mid-range restaurants (and up) serve better quality food.

Hungaria Koncert runs this excellent dinner cruise with live Hungarian folk music and dance performance.

There's an unlimited buffet of various Hungarian dishes and a vibe that’s comparable to an early 20th century cabaret.

About Hungaria Koncert

Hungaria Koncert is a cruise operator and organizes different touristic activities. They've been operating since (at least) 1995.

Cruise Duration

  • This cruise lasts 1.5 or 2 hours depending on which cruise you choose — 7 pm or 10 pm . This gives ample time to enjoy the delicious food, the unique folk performance, and explore the ship.

What's Included

  • You get to enjoy the show of award-winning music and dance performers who are going to give you an amazing time.

  • ‍ You get access to a buffet libre of a variety of Hungarian dishes . Meals include goulash soup, stuffed cabbage, beef stew, somlói Galuska, a variety of strudels, and more.
  • The quality of the food is good but isn’t Michelin 2-star grade. Even so, it’s a great way to try out a variety of Hungarian dishes at once.

Dance and Music Performance

  • T he sides have 180° views , while the front and back are 360° , but fences obstruct the view.

  • The lower deck has the same look and feel as the rest of the ship. There is only one area accessible - immediately to the right of the entrance. This area is for people with non-dinner tickets. It includes a bar with reasonable prices, tables with chairs, and a folklore trio performance.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 19:00, and on weekends at 22:00
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-5)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest, Id. Antall József rkp., 1051
  • 🗺️ Use tram line 2 to arrive at Széchenyi István tér stop.  You can find Hungaria Koncert next to Széchenyi Chain bridge.
💡 Pricing 55€ vs. 72€ — What's the difference? Those with a regular dinner cruise ticket (55€) won't be able to see the folk dance show - they need to buy the 72€ ticket if they do. There's nothing stopping you from going over to the other side for a sneak peek, though.

7. Best Cocktails, Craft Beer or Wine Tasting Cruise

Hungarian folk music performers entertaining guests with violin music on Hugaria Koncert's cruise boat.

I have already mentioned the dinner cruise offered by Hungaria Koncert above.

However, they also offer a more affordable boat tour with drinks , which takes place on the same ship.

The only difference is that this event is on the ship's lower deck and features a live folk violin trio to entertain you.

There is also an open-air area where you can drink and enjoy spending time.

The basic ticket is reasonably priced and includes a drink . You can also upgrade to options offering craft beer, cocktails, exquisite wines, or even unlimited drinks .

The atmosphere is reminiscent of an early 20th-century cabaret.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with footage of Hungaria Koncert's cruise. Even though this is about their dinner cruise, you'll be on the same vessel.

Indoor Area

  • The bottom deck area has the same 20th-century cabaret feel as the rest of the ship.

Outdoor Area

  • The sides of the view offer 180° views, so unfortunately you can't see both Buda and Pest at the same time.

budapest tour review

  • The basic ticket is reasonably priced and includes a drink .
  • You can also upgrade to options offering craft beer, cocktails, exquisite wines, or even unlimited drinks .
  • If you buy the more expensive tickets you will be seated upstairs in the dinner guest area instead of slightly less luxurious bottom deck area.

8. Best Pizza and Unlimited Beer Cruise

  • During the cruise, you can enjoy unlimited draft beer and soft drinks .

9. Cheapest Sightseeing Cruise

The Budapest Palace during the day, from the perspective of Mahart-BKK's sightseeing cruise.

✔️  Cheapest Cruise in Budapest  — perfect for travelers that value affordability.

✔️  Unlimited Cruises  — for the same day with one ticket, excellent in case you have the urge to binge cruise in Budapest.

✔️  Great for Getting Around  — there's an option to disembark on Margaret Island or at any of the four other stops.

❌  Low Quality  — I'm not mincing words here, this is a bare-bones, low-quality sightseeing cruise.

❌  Smell of Fuel   — a strange smell is often present on the boat.

❌  Five Stops  — the boat docks and undocks 5 times during the cruise, which isn't fun.

❌ Crowded —  the ship is small and cramped to begin with but wait till the Hungarian pupils on school trips arrive.

‍ Update: This boat tour is only available during the summer season.

A dirt-cheap sightseeing cruise that ranks low in quality compared to other options. Great if you're on an  extremely  tight budget.

Note that this cruise does not have public reviews, as it is a public service boat service operated by a government-owned company (Mahart). Tickets must be purchased on the spot and cannot be reserved in advance.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with live footage of BK-Mahart's sightseeing cruise.

Detailed breakdown

BKK-Mahart's sightseeing boat.

  • It seemed old and in need of renovation.

The top deck with rows of seating on Mahart-BKKs's sightseeing boat.

  • Poor seat layout , crowded, partial view due to roof and side columns. It wasn't too crowded when I went, so it was acceptable.

  • The smell of gas/fuel , poor seat layout, dim lighting, mediocre views, and uncomfortable seat cushions.

5 Stops During the Cruise

10. Historic 19th Century Steam Boat Cruise

budapest tour review

❓ Should I book river cruise tickets in advance? Is it worth it? 💡 Yes  — It's worth reserving your ticket in advance to ensure your place on the ship, although you can purchase tickets in person.

This is Budapest's only boat tour offering an authentic 19th-century historic cruise experience . The ship is a replica of the Hungarian paddle steamer , the Kisfaludy, which operated between 1847 and 1887 on Lake Balaton thanks to the initiative of István Széchenyi.

The cruise includes a welcome drink and an English audio guide (via loudspeakers).

The ship features an open-air panorama deck at the front (the best place for 360° views), a semi-covered rear area , and a small top deck near the captain's cabin.

There's also a must-see maritime museum on the bottom deck.

In summary, this cruise provides a high-quality sightseeing experience infused with historic flair you can't get elsewhere in Budapest.

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. The best spot for sightseeing on this cruise is the front panorama deck , where you board the ship.

  • You can also find free umbrellas , which they likely hand out during rainy weather.
  • During the cruise, you can enjoy an English-speaking audio guide through loudspeakers.
  • The guide was synchronized with the attractions we passed by and provided brief introductions, trivia, and historical information about the landmarks.
  • Sometimes loudspeakers can get drowned out by the noise of a crowd, which makes them hard to hear. I didn't experience this during my daytime cruise, but it may be more challenging to hear during the more popular night cruise .

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i prepare for a river cruise during the winter or summer.

Summer: Have sunscreen, water, an umbrella, and sunglasses for daytime cruises in the warmer months.

In rainy weather, the open-air deck may be closed. In stormy weather, cruises are canceled. They'll either refund you or offer an alternative cruise if this happens. ‍

Winter: The heated cabin's windows tend to fog up, blocking the views, depending on how well the windows are insulated.

You can always go out to get a few photo shots, then rush back to the safety of the heated cabin. Open-air sightseeing during the winter can be less enjoyable due to cold weather and winds, so it's best to dress warmly, wear layers, and protect your face.

How can I avoid overcrowded boat tours?

If you want to avoid crowded boat tours, you can follow these steps: visit during the off-season, choose daytime tours instead of night tours, or opt for more expensive cruises.

Is Budapest Worth Visiting? (The Pros & Cons)

Budapest is a beautiful European destination with so many things to do and see. With it being Hungary’s capital, it is not short of cultural activities and eateries. Home to rich history, beautiful architecture, vibrant nightlife, and thermal baths. But with so many other European cities to choose from, you may wonder if Budapest is worth visiting?

In this article, we will discuss the pros and cons of travelling to Budapest to help you make the best choice for you!

A Picture of the Stunning Hungarian Parliament in Budapest Reflecting into the Danube

Pros of Visiting Budapest

Let’s dive into some of the favourite reasons why Budapest is often a favourite destination for many tourists. From its stunning sights to its warm and inviting culture. I have listed below some note-worthy reasons why you should add Budapest to your European Bucket List.

1. Budapest’s History and Culture

Budapest is a great representation of when old meets new. Walking around the Buda side of the city is quite literally like going back in time. Everywhere you look, you can see signs of the past, from Roman ruins to medieval castles. Whereas, the pest side of the city has a more modern twist, an exciting nightlife scene, modern eats from around the world and groovy street art.

2. The Food in Budapest is delicious

If you are a foodie then you will love Budapest. It offers a vibrant food scene, with something for everyone. From traditional Hungarian Dishes like goulash, a meaty stew seasoned with paprika, and lángos, a deep-fried flatbread topped with cheese and sour cream.

To delicious international cuisine, such as Italian, Asian and more. There is one thing I can guarantee, you will not be disappointed with Budapest’s food options. Oh! And I almost forgot to mention, if you are keeping things budget-friendly then keep an eye out for some street food vendors. They offer some delicious and affordable options to keep you going while exploring the city. Karavan Street Food Market is one of my personal favourite places to grab a bite while in Budapest.

Where to eat in Budapest

Szimpla Kert : If you are looking for a unique food experience head to Szimpla Kert on a Sunday. Here you can enjoy an authentic Hungarian Dish while sitting in the oldest ruin bar in the city.

Central Market Hall: Looking to experience some local cuisines? Then the Central Market is the place for you. From fruits to sweets to traditional Hungarian sausages, you can find it all here.

New York Café: If you’re on the hunt for something a little more fancy then why not check out the New York Café? A rather popular spot, servicing a range of food options including their Dobos cake, a Hungarian sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with caramel.

Girl Standing Looking Out at the view from the fisherman's bastion in Budapest

3. It’s Fairytale Like Appearance & Greenery

Another pro of visiting Budapest is the magical feeling as you walk around. The Buda side of the city quite literally feels like something out of a childhood storybook. From the stunning beauty of Fisherman’s Bastion to the vast grounds of Buda Castle . It is honestly one of my favourite fairytale places in Europe .

The city also has a lot of green spaces from Margaret Island, with its lush green parks, quaint gardens, and medieval ruins. It’s a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

To Gellért Hill which boasts incredible views of the city. The true Budapest gems is a lovely place to spend half a day gazing out at famous landmarks such as the Hungarian Parliament and Chain Bridge. It really allows the skyline to come to life.

4. It has Unique Attractions

Budapest is not short of unique attractions which makes it the perfect addition to your Europe Itinerary .

The Thermal Baths : The city is known for its famous thermal spas such as the Széchenyi, which is one of the largest spa complexes in Europe, to the lesser-known spas like Veli Bej Thermal Bath. Budapest is truly a city that allows you to relax and unwind. Or, boogie if you choose to do so. (Here’s a link to the bath parties).

Ruin Bars : Another famous thing to do in Budapest is visit one of the many ruined bars. Party the night away in what was once an abandoned building. These bars truly have a lot of character offering a very unique nightlife experience. Nothing like I have seen anywhere else in Europe. Szimpla Kert is the biggest and most popular ruin bar so arrive early if you are looking to experience it.

Oh! And don’t be surprised if the sun is rising when you leave 🤣

Caving Beneath the City: Did you know that underneath Budapest lies a cave system that you can explore? This is one of my favourite lesser known things to do in the city . Take an adrenaline-filled tour through the Budapest cave system , it is the perfect experience for those adrenaline junkies out there.. Crawl through narrow passages, wearing an overalls and and a head torch. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Chair Lift with Incredible Views: Budapest is not somewhere I expected to find a Chair Lift, granted it is not located directly in the city centre but Zugliget Chairlift offers an incredible view of Budapest and beyond. I definitely recommend adding it to your Definitely for when you’re in the city.

You can reach the Zugliget Chairlift by taking Bus 291 from the Széll Kálmán tér metro station and getting off at the János-hegy stop.

The journey will take about 20 minutes. Once there, the ticket to the chairlift costs 1400 HUF (approximately €5) for adults for a one-way trip.

The hours of operation are from 10 AM to 3 PM daily, except on Mondays.

Chain Bridge in Budapest reflecting into the Danube River

5. It is Budget-Friendly

Not only is Budapest a fun and beautiful city to explore it also is rather budget-friendly for its visitors. The city offers a range of low-cost, yet quality accommodations, from cosy hostels to comfortable budget hotels.

Dining in Budapest can be a surprisingly affordable experience, with tasty street food and inexpensive local eateries offering traditional Hungarian dishes.

Public transport is easy to come by and quite affordable costing as little as €1 for a single ticket.

There are many FREE attractions in the city from walking tours, and city parks to famous landmarks. And while, some things may be a little bit on the expensive side, for example, the Thermal Baths you can make it a little more affordable by going to the lesser-known spas.

6. Vibrant Nightlife

We already touched on this briefly but Budapest has quite a vibrant nightlife scene. From quirky abandoned buildings aka ruin bars. To a range of rooftop bars, such as 360 Bar (delish cocktails) and Corvin Club which boasts a rooftop cinema; there’s no shortage of places to enjoy the city’s lively atmosphere.

For those looking for something a little more sophisticated, don’t worry there’s something for you too. Wine Bars featuring local and international wines, Jazz Clubs with live performances and Opera Houses to name a few.

Whether you’re looking to party all night or simply enjoy a cocktail with good conversation, Budapest has something for everyone. And the best part? It won’t break your wallet!

Inside Tip: Don’t forget to check out the Budapest Boat Tours, especially at night. The Hungarian Capital really knows how to present a nighttime display with all its major landmarks lit up beautifully. It’s one of my favourite things about the city.

Cons of Visiting Budapest

Now, while Budapest is known for its budget-friendly activities, exciting nightlife and picturesque streets. It does, like all other cities have its downside. And these cons can impact a visitor’s experience so I thought I would highlight some.

1. Language Barrier

I have been to Budapest a handful of times, and honestly have never had any problems getting around despite the fact that I don’t speak Hungarian . The people are generally very nice and happy to help regardless of there being a language barrier.

However, this is something to consider when visiting the city for the first time. Sometimes there can be communication difficulties may come into play. To avoid this I recommend learning some key phrases before you visit.

Not only will this help you navigate and get around it is also important to be polite and considerate towards the locals. It shows them that you care about their culture and traditions. I’ve highlighted some key terms down below.

Köszönöm (Thank You)

In English, this translates to “Thank you” and it’s pronounced as “ko-so-noem”. It’s always good manners to thank people, and in Hungary, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to say Köszönöm.

Szervusz (Hello/Goodbye)

This is a common way to say either “hello” or “goodbye”. It’s pronounced “ser-vus”. Although it can be used at any time of day, it’s more commonly used in informal settings.

Szia (Hi/Bye)

This is another versatile word that can be used to say either “hi” or “bye”. It’s pronounced “see-ya” and is less formal than “Szervusz”.

Hol van a WC? (Where is the bathroom?)

This phrase might be very useful in many situations. It translates to “Where is the bathroom?” and it’s pronounced “hole van a vay-tsay?”.

Egészségedre! (Cheers/To your health)

This phrase is perfect for when you’re enjoying Hungary’s famous wines or beers. It means “Cheers” or more directly “To your health”, and it’s pronounced, “Eg-esh-sheg-ed-re!”.

Hogy hívnak? (What is your name?)

This phrase would come in handy while introducing yourself or getting to know new people. It translates to “What is your name?” and is pronounced as “hodge hee-vanak?”.

3. It’s Busy

Budapest has seen a spike in popularity in recent years and with this comes over tourism. Some of the city’s main tourist attractions tend to be packed with people as early as 10 am. So, if there is somewhere you really want to see without the crowds I suggest waking up super early.

In the summer I got to Fisherman’s Batsion at 7.30 am, there were very few people for the first half hour but that quickly changed making it harder to get that iconic picture of the parliament in the background without fighting the crowds.

Planning your visit during the off-peak season or choosing to explore lesser-known attractions can be a solution to avoid crowds and still enjoy the beauty of Budapest.

Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest, Hungary

2. The Currency

The currency in Hungary is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). And if you are planning to visit just Budapest, you will not have any issues with this as you can withdraw a small amount of cash before visiting.

Besides, most places accept card transactions.

However, if you are backpacking or travelling through Europe it can be a con to have to constantly convert money in between all the currencies. Especially, with the rates changing day by day.

And yes, you will get by with a card, there are some circumstances where you will need cash. For example, some of the ruin bars are cash only and public toilets tend to charge a fee in cash too.

I also tried to get into the 360 bar in the summer months and was turned away because I did not have cash for the ‘entry fee’. This, however, did not seem to be an issue when I was there the Autumn previous so perhaps this depends on the night.

Tips for Visiting Budapest

Budget-Friendly Tips: Take advantage of the free walking tours available in Budapest to learn about the history and culture of the city.

Also, try to eat at local markets and food stalls for authentic Hungarian cuisine at a reasonable price.

The city is extremely walkable, so try to limit the number of public transport you get to keep costs down.

Solo Female Travel Tips: Budapest, much like other major cities in Europe such as Lisbon or Rome , is considered to be a relatively safe destination for solo female travellers. However, it is always important to use common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

I recommend staying in well-lit and central areas at night and avoiding walking alone in quiet or isolated areas.

If you do want to venture out at night I recommend making friends in hostels or group tours. That way you can feel safer as part of a group.

I have been solo in Budapest twice now and never really felt threatened or unsafe. The place that I felt slightly uneasy was outside the train station but that is common in a lot of major European Cities.

Taxi Tips: When taking a taxi in Budapest, make sure to only use licensed and metered taxis.

Avoid getting into unmarked or private cars offering rides as they may overcharge you. And unfortunately, even cars that appear to be ‘taxis’ may not be legit.

This is a common scam in Budapest, one I unfortunately fell for on my first visit to the city. Try not to get caught out by using taxi apps and check for licenses before getting in.

Instead, try to use Taxi apps such as Bolt. Unfortunately, much like other major European cities such as Rome or Dublin , Uber is only used by regulated taxi drivers which makes it more expensive than in cities like Lisbon that use it as a ride sharing app.

Attraction Tips: Don’t be afraid to explore some of Budapest’s lesser-known attractions like cave tours and the Zugliget Chair Lift. They are a lot of fun and a way to escape the crowds.

Visit in the Off-Season: Budapest is a lot of fun in the summer months but it is busy. I visited in October one year and had a completely different experience. I love it!

Top 10 things to do in Budapest

Next, I wanted to show you the top things to do while in Budapest. This will be the ultimate deciding factor in seeing if you think Budapest is worth visiting. If there are attractions that you really want to experience then why not give them a try?

Fishermans Bastion:

If you only had time to visit one attraction in Budapest I would recommend that be the Fishermans Bastion. It is just like a fairytale movie backdrop, which offers outstanding views of the city’s skyline.

This neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style terrace is located on the Buda side of the Danube on Castle Hill. And you can quite literally see all the famous landmarks from it. From Margaret Island, Pest to the east, and Gellért Hill.

And the best thing about it is, that entry is FREE. Meaning you can enjoy all its beauty without having to dive into your budget for the trip.

Buda Castle:

Buda Castle, once the home of the Hungarian Kings is a site to be seen. Perched on top of Castle Hill, the grounds are the ultimate playground for those interested in history and culture. I’m not gonna lie, some elements of the building do not seem like a castle but more ‘museum’ ‘like. However, walking around the less busy parts transports you into elements of a Disney storybook.

Much like the other attractions on Castle Hill, there is a phenomenal view of the Budapest Skyline, admire the beauty of the Parliament, Chain Bridge and Gellért Hill from afar.

After exploring the castle grounds, take a leisurely stroll along the cobbled streets of the Castle District, dotted with quaint houses, charming cafes, and fascinating museums. This is a part of Budapest that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.

Hungarian Parliament Building:

Correct me if I am wrong but Budapest is home to one of the most beautiful parliament buildings in the world. It’s also the 3rd largest in the world too.

It is definitely somewhere you want to check out while exploring the Hungarian Capital. You can get up close and personal with it and really get to see its size with your own eyes.

It is also possible to take a guided tour of the building allowing you to fully appreciate its historical and architectural significance.

Széchenyi Baths, Budapest, Hungary

Thermal Baths

Budapest is world-renowned for its thermal baths, and a visit to the city would not be complete without experiencing one.

The Széchenyi Thermal Bath , located in the city park, is the most popular and largest of its kind in Europe.

For a less crowded experience, try the lesser-known Király Thermal Bath provides a peaceful retreat that dates back to the Ottoman era.

Whichever you choose, thermal baths in Budapest provide relaxation and rejuvenation, a perfect antidote to a day of sightseeing.

Shoes on the Danube

When visiting a new place it is important to pay your respect to the destination’s past. The Shoes on the Danube is a sad memorial tribute to the Hungarian Jews who were forced to take off their shoes before being shot into the Danube during World War II.

The memorial features 60 pairs of iron shoes scattered along the river’s edge, symbolising the shoes left behind by the victims.

The site is a sombre reflection of Budapest’s tragic history during the war, leaving a deep impact on visitors.

A walk along the Danube to this historical site is a humbling experience that will make your visit to Budapest more meaningful.

Central Market Hall

A foodie’s heaven, brimming with stalls selling a variety of goods – from fresh produce, meats, and cheeses, to traditional Hungarian pastries and spices.

The second floor offers an array of souvenirs that make perfect mementoes or gifts.

This vibrant marketplace provides an authentic window into Hungarian culture and cuisine, making it a must-stop on your Budapest itinerary .

Don’t miss the opportunity to taste local specialities like goulash or lángos while you’re there.

The Ruin Bars

The Ruin Bars in Budapest are a unique and unforgettable feature of the city’s nightlife. These bars are set in the ruins of abandoned buildings, stores, or lots and are known for their eclectic and bohemian vibe.

Each one offers a different experience, so you can choose based on your preference. I know we already discussed them but here are a reminder of some of my favourites.

Szimpla Kert, the original ruin bar, is filled with quirky décor and a lively atmosphere.

Instant and Fogasház have been merged into a massive party complex with multiple dance floors playing different music genres.

Mazel Tov offers a more laid-back setting with its Middle-Eastern cuisine and live music.

Boat Tours on the Danube

Seeing Budapest from the waterfront is an experience you will not regret, especially at night.

Boat Tours on the Danube offer breathtaking views of the city’s iconic landmarks, including the grand Parliament building, the scenic Buda Castle, and the historic Chain Bridge, all beautifully lit up in the evening.

Some tours also provide dining options, allowing you to savour delicious Hungarian cuisine while navigating the serene waters.

Or, party the night away with your favourite beverage in hand.

Caving Tours

Caving Tours in Budapest offers an exciting adventure for those seeking something out of the ordinary.

Beneath the city lies a vast network of caves, formed by the thermal waters that Budapest is famous for. Palvolgyi-Matyashegyi cave system is the most extensive in the city, providing a thrilling exploration opportunity for both beginners and seasoned spelunkers.

On these tours, you can crawl, climb, and scramble through narrow passages and vast caverns, all under the guidance of expert cavers.

It’s a unique way to discover a different side of Budapest and a must-do for adventure seekers.

Walk the Chain Bridge

Walking across the Chain Bridge is another unmissable experience in Budapest. As the first bridge to connect Buda and Pest, the two parts of the city, it holds significant historical importance.

A stroll across the bridge offers an awe-inspiring view of the Danube, especially at sunset, and provides a perfect vantage point for photographing the city skyline.

Where to stay in Budapest

When it comes to accommodation options in Budapest, there’s something for every budget:

  • Budget Option – Wombat’s CITY Hostels : For budget travellers, Wombat’s CITY Hostels is an excellent choice. Known for its clean rooms and social atmosphere, it’s a popular choice amongst backpackers. It’s also conveniently located, making it easy to explore the city. It’s one of my favourite hostel stays in Europe .
  • Mid-Range Option – Casati Budapest Hotel : For a mid-range budget, consider Casati Budapest Hotel. This boutique hotel is situated in the city centre, close to major attractions. The rooms are comfortable and the hotel offers services like a gym and sauna.
  • High-End Option – Aria Hotel Budapest : If you’re looking for luxury, Aria Hotel Budapest is a top choice. This 5-star hotel offers plush rooms, a rooftop bar with city views, an indoor pool and an on-site restaurant. The hotel’s location in the heart of the city means you’re just a short walk away from the city’s main attractions.

Is Budapest a good place to visit?

All in all, Budapest is 110% worth the visit. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a foodie, a nightlife lover, or a budget backpacker, the city has something for everyone. Its rich heritage combined with its modern, vibrant culture makes it an irresistible destination for any traveller.

So, pack your bags, book your tickets, and get ready to immerse yourself in the magic of Budapest.

Viking Grand European Tour 15-Day River Cruise Review

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: August 17, 2022

I was more than ready for this Viking Grand European Tour 15-day river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. Lee Oliver, our Viking Lif river ship Program Director, greeted us at the gangway with a warm “Welcome Aboard!”

Those two words were like music to my ears. Maybe not Bartok or Liszt but music nonetheless.

Budapest , Hungary, on the beautiful and sometimes-blue Danube , has so much to experience.

A mid-afternoon boarding gave guests plenty of time before dinner to explore this spirited yet somewhat austere city, either on their own or with a Viking tour excursion.

Viking River Grand European River Cruise Review

In This Post...

In the course of two-weeks, we would cruise on three rivers; the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers. Along the way, Viking Lif  had 12 scheduled cruise ports to visit before docking in Amsterdam. A couple of port tour excursions offered day trips to other nearby ancient towns, and I highly recommend those options. Here’s our itinerary.

Grand European Tour Itinerary

  • Day 1:    Budapest, Hungary
  • Day 2:    Budapest and Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Day 3:    Vienna, Austria
  • Day 4:    Melk, Austria
  • Day 5:    Linz, Austria and Passau, Germany
  • Day 6:    Regensburg, Germany
  • Day 7:    Nuremberg, Germany
  • Day 8:    Bamberg, Germany
  • Day 9:    Wurzburg, Germany and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany
  • Day 10:  Wertheim, Germany
  • Day 11:  Koblenz, Germany
  • Day 12:  Cologne, Germany
  • Day 13:  Kinderdijk, The Netherlands
  • Day 14:  Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Getting to Budapest by Train

As a solo traveler and someone who doesn’t fly, it was a challenge to figure out how to get to Budapest. After one night in Munich, Germany, it was an eight hour train ride to Budapest.

In First Class on trains in Europe, you’ll find many English-speaking passengers from North America. It was easy to strike up conversations with fellow travelers and the eight hours quickly passed.

Arriving into Budapest Keleti station for my Viking Grand European Tour.

With the help of Viking reservations, I pre-reserved a driver to meet me at Budapest’s historic Keleti station.

Within 30 minutes of pulling into the station and getting into the taxi, I was on board Viking Lif , met our program director and settled into my cozy cabin. Our Viking Grand European Tour was about to begin.

Day 1:  Viking Lif Embarkation

By the time I arrived at the ship in the late afternoon, other passengers had already unpacked and were mingling about the vessel. They had enough time for a short city tour and were enjoying cocktails in the lounge.

I had about an hour to get acquainted with my cabin and Viking Lif river ship before the first pre-dinner meeting.

Our Danube cruise began in Budapest aboard Viking Skadi. This is my cabin.

At 6:30pm, it was time to head to the lounge, meet the other guests and attend the informative yet brief review of our river cruise itinerary. Though the meeting was necessary and very informative, I really looked forward to tonight’s dinner.

All I ate on the eight-hour train ride from Munich to Budapest was a bowl of Hungarian Goulash. No complaints…the goulash was very good and of course, very appropriate!

It was a balmy autumn night that beckoned tourists and locals alike to stroll along the banks of the Danube late into the evening. I was tired but excited to finally have a chance to walk across Budapest’s historic Chain Bridge.

Camera in hand, I must have crossed the Danube four or six times, snapping photos of the warm yellow bridge lights, couples strolling arm in arm, and the magnificently illuminated state buildings that line the riverfront.

Finally, it was time to call it a night. Tomorrow, our Grand European Tour river cruise would begin with a full day of sightseeing before we even got underway.

Day 2:  Touring and Tasting Budapest

If being chatty at breakfast isn’t your thing, there’s the option for a very relaxing breakfast buffet at Aquavit Terrace every morning. It’s also a good way to plan your morning time if you have a 9:00am or even earlier tour departure. This was usually how my day started; quiet, comfortable, and a cappuccino in hand.

budapest tour review

By 8:15am on our second day in Budapest, passengers heard the first warning announcement for our city tour departure.

Know Your Tour Departure Time

Here’s how it’s done on river cruises. You know your tour departure time, say 9 A.M. At 8:45 A.M. over the PA system, you’re given a 15-minute heads-up for the tour to leave.

Then you hear a 5-minute warning for your motor coach departure. The tour departure time that’s posted is not when you should walk out of your stateroom. It’s actually when the bus departs. I’ve had to run to catch the bus on more than one occasion.

Today’s complimentary morning tour was your basic European city overview; historic places, medieval churches, political hotspots of yore. In the scope of four hours, we would either drive by, stop to view or exit the motor coach to stretch and take photos.

Highlights of Our Budapest Tours

Morning tour of budapest.

Our motor coach drove across the Chain Bridge to Buda side of the Danube. This is the hilly side of the city where many of the most beautiful building are located.

Buda Castle across the Danube River

Views from the Buda side of the river…

Walk along Fishermen's Bastion in Budapest

Fishermen’s Bastion, built between 1895 and 1902, the beautiful towers and covered terrace weren’t built to defend the territory but to provide unparalleled views of the city. We had ample time to wander along the terrace and up to the Neo-Romanesque designed towers. This is the prime photo op location for sweeping vistas of Budapest.

Back aboard Viking Lif in time for lunch. As there would be on every day of the cruise, you can choose from two lunch venues; The Restaurant with table service and a buffet or in Aquavit for a café lunch, buffet-style. Most days, I chose Aquavit Lounge.

Afternoon Tour on the Pest Side

Budapest jewish and hungarian history.

I signed up for the optional 2:00PM Dohány Street Synagogue and Hungarian Jewish Museum tour. The motor coach let us off just a short walk to the synagogue. Part of the intrigue was seeing the small shops, bars and cafés in what was once the Jewish Quarter, or Ghetto.

Dohány Street Synagogue

Built in the Moorish Revival style between 1854-1859, it is the largest synagogue in Europe. In addition to the main synagogue (Great Synagogue), inside you’ll find the Hungarian Jewish Museum, the Graveyard and the Memorial.

Budapest Dohany Street Synagogue

The Weeping Willow memorial is in the courtyard behind the synagogue. On its leaves are inscribed the names of 30,000 Holocaust victims. The father of actor Tony Curtis, Emanuel Schwartz, funded the weeping willow memorial.

The courtyard was named Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who managed to save thousands of Jews from going to concentration camps.

Stopping for a Slice of Budapest’s Finest

After a stop at a small shop for a Hungarian pastry called, “Flódni”, we boarded the bus to head back to the ship. We returned just in time for Cocktail Hour.

Flodni Hungarian Jewish Cake

Tonight was the official “Welcome Aboard” toast by Captain Marcin and Hotel Manager Eve. One sparkling wine down and just before dinner, we had our next day’s briefing. Next port going north on the Danube would be Bratislava, Slovakia.

Day 3:  Bratislava, Slovakia and Funny Little Men

I woke up to see that we were underway, gently cruising along the Danube towards our next port, Bratislava , Slovakia.

Following breakfast and before we’d arrive, a mandatory safety drill was held. Warm autumn weather quickly drew everyone to the top deck and the drill took all of 15-20 minutes.

Afterwards, many of us stayed and either walked laps or settled into a lounge chair. With a mid-afternoon arrival into Bratislava, the day would be relaxing and informative.

Program Director Lee led an enrichment talk about Vienna coffeehouses (where to go and what to eat) and a background about Austrian-born composer Wolfgang Mozart.

budapest tour review

Locals have a great sense of humor as can be sensed when you try to find all the bronze statues. When I was in Bratislava, I counted eight almost human-size funny little men bronze statues. How many will you find?

Day 4:  Vienna, Austria

This wasn’t my first visit to this medieval city. From the beautifully baroque Schönbrunn Palace to a peek at the Spanish Lipizzaner Horses, Vienna has something surprising or magnificent around every corner.

I decided to pass on the complimentary morning motor coach tour of the city and get some writing done. One thing to note about Vienna, river cruise ship dockage is usually too far to walk to the city center. It is walkable but most people opt for a bus into the city and some will then walk back to the river ship.

Too good to pass up, I signed up for the Chef’s Tour to the Farmer’s Market (Naschtmarkt). A bit of walking, two subway trains and we were smack in the middle of a working-class neighborhood and a several-blocks-long farmer’s Market.

At the NaschtMarkt open-air market in Vienna, Austria

After a couple of hours, we were back on the subway, walked two blocks through Mexikoplatz and past St. Francis of Assisi Church and we were back on Viking Lif …in time for cocktails, of course. But not much time to spare.

Not-to-Miss Evening in Vienna

I had signed up for the optional ($) Viking excursion tour to a concert hall for a Mozart and Strauss concert. Every river cruise line offers this but I had never done it. There would be an early dinner on board and then leave on the motor coaches before 7pm for the concert hall.

At the opera hall in Vienna, Austria.

The concert hall was beautifully Baroque. We were all packed in on folding chairs like sardines in a tin though not as smelly. The performances were excellent with most of the music and singing were familiar classical pieces.

If you have a chance to book a shore excursion that includes a concert in Vienna, I highly recommend it.

Afterwards, everyone was really quiet on the motor coach back to the ship. It had been a busy, long day from one end of the city to another.

When we arrived back to the ship, we were greeted with a special Viking Grand European bedtime treat: goulash soup in Aquavit Restaurant. The gorgeous bowl of soup and a fresh-baked crunchy roll accompanied me back to my cabin. Within an hour, I was asleep. One more port in Austria tomorrow.

Day 5:  Melk, Austria

All that glitters is mostly gold.

Melk is a curiously monastic community with the resplendent gold Melk Abbey high on a hill overlooking the Danube. Cobblestone street wind through town, leading to the Abbey’s grand entrance. Monks from the Abbey stroll through town and work in the Abbey as they have for more than 900 years.

Melk Abbey in Melk, Austria

Plan to spend about an hour inside the Abbey. You can walk up to the entrance or take a motor coach to the top of the hill.

The baroque interior is dazzling, the library has over 80,000 medieval manuscripts and several hidden doors. Leave time to step outside for a sweeping view of the city and Danube below.

It’s a pleasant stroll over a little bridge back to the river ship, or take the motor coach again. The town is lovely with cafés and small boutique shops.

With a “Be back on board” at 3:45pm, we were welcomed with an Austrian apple strudel-making demonstration. Then the habitual cocktail hour, daily port briefing and the slow walk into the dining room. Another satisfying multi-course dinner and off to bed.

Viking Grand European river cruise with Strudel-making demonstration

Every night on the river cruise there’s entertainment in the lounge. So far, we’ve had the onboard musician at the keyboard and dancing, Slovakian folk dancing show and the goulash event. With days so busy, evening entertainment has been kept to a minimum. I think Viking knows that we’d be exhausted.

Day 6:  Passau, Engine Issues and a Slight Detour

Surprise! We were informed last night that Viking Lif was having engine trouble and we’d not make it to dock in Passau. Instead, Viking Lif would tie up in Linz. So at 8:15am, (it was a really early wake-up!) passengers boarded Viking’s motor coach for a full-day nine-hour tour.

Sadly, one man had to see a doctor in the nearest town so he and his wife had to stay in Linz. I was working under deadline to file a story, so a 9-hour day in motion put me into panic.

Viking’s Program Director, Lee, made similar arrangements for me so that I could spend the day writing instead of touring. I was so incredibly happy when I found out I would have a hotel room for the day in Linz and would get a full day’s writing done.

Viking Grand European Tour river cruise spent a day in Passau, Germany.

Even the light drizzle didn’t stop anyone from walking in the city center. After my friend’s doctor appointment, the three of us met for lunch and a walk through town. Linz is one of the most non-touristic larger cities I’ve visited in Europe. It’s very charming. And I’ll bet it’s even lovelier during the holiday/Christmas market season.

At 5:00PM, a white minivan arrived and the three of us were off to meet Viking Lif , fully repaired at the shipyard in Linz. All the other passengers were on their way back from Passau. And we all arrived in time for cocktail hour, daily briefing and another very nice dinner in the dining room.

Viking Grand European Tour continued in Linz when ship was repaired.

Onward to Straubing, Germany! Almost halfway through our Viking Grand European Tour. Tempus Fugit.

Day 7:  Regensburg, Bavaria – Germany

This was one of those years in central Europe when the rain seems to never stop. Germany and France had seen flooding at the end of summer and rivers were swollen and overflowing their banks.

As we made our way up the Danube, I started to watch the water’s edge. I knew from past river cruises, if I saw tree trunks submerged and debris quickly flowing past us, it meant trouble.

With high water, river ships cannot fit under the dozens of ancient bridges. Locks get stuck. But Viking Lif made its way to Straubing and by 2:00pm, we boarded the motor coach for the short ride to beautiful medieval Regensburg.

I was so glad Regensburg was included on this Viking Grand European Tour. It’s among my favorite places in Europe. This is the oldest city on the Danube and dates back to the year 179.

While the Dom St. Peter Gothic Cathedral is one of the grandest in all Bavaria and worth a visit, I always head to the Alte Würstküche, meaning, “Old Sausage Kitchen”, it’s the oldest restaurant in Germany.

At the oldest sausage restaurant in Germany, Alte Würstküche, in Regensburg.

The restaurant is usually packed with tourists throughout the summer but this rainy October day, I had no problem getting my own indoor table. Once you’ve finished your beer and extras, take a walk across the Old Stone Bridge. Built between 1135 and 1146, it was the bridge used by the knights on the second and third Crusades to the Holy Land.

Danube Begins to Look a Little Ominous

What I saw from Regensburg Old Bridge didn’t look too good. I’d been on enough floods on the rivers in Europe to recognize the inevitable.

The Danube was rushing past us downstream heading towards the Black Sea, its terminus. Trees were submerged. The water was creeping up to the lower levels of the medieval buildings.

Flood waters in Germany.

While we were in Regensburg, Viking Lif sailed from Straubing to Regensburg to meet us. This was a chance for passengers who simply yearned for a quiet day onboard to just cruise.

Back onboard with time to freshen up before the daily briefing. But tonight, the meeting took a sudden twist. The Program Director proceeded with an (un)expected announcement.

To paraphrase, Lee said, “Pack your bags, we’re changing river ships in the morning”. It was a very busy evening for everyone.

We would disembark with our carry-on luggage the next morning at 8:30 AM in Deggendorf, then board a bus to meet sister ship, Viking Skadi, in Nuremberg. Our Viking Grand European Tour was about to take a twist.

Day 8:  Changing Ships and a Detour

A visit to an extraordinarily bizarre monument.

With our luggage taken off the ship and loaded onto buses, we only had to bring along our carry-on bags.

I had been through this river ship shuffle three times in the last few years so I knew what to expect. River cruisers seem to roll with the punches. There’s nothing you can do when there’s a flood or a drought except board a bus and change ships.

Early morning departure from Viking Lif and onto Nuremberg and our next ship.

Viking had a really good plan on the way to Nuremberg. Driving through Bavaria en route to Nuremberg, we stopped at Walhalla, Germany’s monument to its native Germanic language politicians, scientists, artists and other distinguished people over the centuries.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Danube river, Walhalla looms on the horizon bearing a striking resemblance to the Parthenon in Greece.

Viking Grand European River Cruise stop at Walhalla

By 11 AM we were back on the bus leaving Walhalla, heading to our next ship.

How River Cruise Ships Deal With Floods

To explain how this ship shuffle works, our original river ship, Viking Lif, couldn’t go any further upriver – the water was too high to let Viking Lif go under the next bridge. Viking Skad i, on its way south from Amsterdam, couldn’t get past Nuremberg for the same reason.

Thus, each ship would swap passengers and bus everyone to the other ship. Then the ships do a U-turn and continue on the route of the original river ship. Everyone would end up at their scheduled port. Viking had this ship exchange experience down to a science.

We had reached the half-way point of our Grand European Tour. Where did that first week go?

Hi Gary, Thank you for your comment and for reading my article. I think I did this cruise in 2018. The last two years were a wash for sure. Nothing has changed with the itinerary, unless it is a last minute decision. Viking still advertises for their Grand European Tour so I think my article is very reliable to help readers decide to try this amazing trip. Viking did a great job, especially when you consider the unexpected ship change. Thank you again for taking the time to write. I hope you have the opportunity to try this cruise.

Hi Ruth, Thank you for writing and taking the time to read my post. As you saw, this river cruise was with Viking and it was wonderful. I also recommend AmaWaterways, Avalon and Uniworld for these longer cruises – they also carry fewer passengers.

While a suite isn’t necessary, it does give you more space. But similar to ocean cruising, in my opinion, as long as I can open a door for fresh air, a balcony or french balcony on a river cruise is fine…and less expensive. Whichever line you choose, have a wonderful river cruise. Thanks again for your comment.

This is the River cruise I’ve been wanting to do..I’m just undecided which company to go with. This seems very busy to get everything in. I also wanted a suite room but maybe that’s not necessary. Your article is very informative especially about the changing of boats due to water issues..I’ve always wondered how that would work.
