Capcom Pro Tour 2024 Sets Sights on $1m Grand Prize

Esports history remade: capcom pro tour 2024 sets sights on $1m grand prize.

In a groundbreaking announcement that’s set to send shockwaves through the esports world, Capcom, the powerhouse behind the legendary Street Fighter series, has declared an electrifying prize for the victor of Capcom Cup XI—a staggering $1 million! This monumental prize firmly places the upcoming Capcom Pro Tour 2024 under the global spotlight, promising unparalleled excitement and competition.

Street Fighter, the iconic brawler that has defined generations of gaming, continues to reign supreme in the esports arena. The Capcom Cup, a crowning jewel since its inception in 2014, has consistently elevated the standard of competitive gaming. With the recent conclusion of the Capcom Cup X, where the victor also walked away with $1 million, Capcom is keeping the adrenaline pumping, ensuring that the legacy of grand prizes continues into 2024.

Though the veil of mystery shrouds the total prize pool and the destined location for this season-ending extravaganza, one thing is crystal clear—the stakes have never been higher. This commitment aligns perfectly with the colossal success of the 2023 tournament, which featured a jaw-dropping total prize pool of $2 million, making it the most lucrative in the franchise’s storied history. Notably, this was the first tour to include the mesmerizing battles of Street Fighter 6, adding an extra layer of thrill to the competition.

While Capcom remains tight-lipped about the finer details of the remaining prize pool’s distribution, the reference to last year’s event as a landmark celebration for Street Fighter 6 hints at Capcom’s vision of not just commemorating milestones but of also setting new benchmarks in the esports domain. This vision not only elevates the player experience but also ensures that the world of fighting games remains at the pinnacle of competitive gaming.

The spectacular prize announcement for the 2024 Pro Tour not only surpasses the achievements of the 2022 edition, which boasted a prize pool of $298,500 but also cements the Capcom Cup as one of the most lucrative arenas in the world of fighting games. With expectations soaring high, the esports community is buzzing with anticipation for what promises to be an epic saga of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship.

Capcom’s latest stride underscores its unwavering commitment to promoting esports as a universal platform for competition, transcending age, gender, and physical boundaries. This visionary approach positions esports not merely as a contemporary phenomenon but as a timeless spectacle of talent and passion.

To all the esports enthusiasts, gamers, and proud Street Fighter fans—brace yourselves. The Capcom Pro Tour 2024 is not just a tournament; it’s a celebration of the spirit of competition, the drive for excellence, and the boundless potential of gaming. Prepare to be part of history in the making. The battle for glory beckons—are you ready to rise to the challenge?

As the culmination of the 2023 Capcom Pro Tour, Capcom Cup X will close out the first season of competitive SF6 with two weekends of non-stop action. The Last Chance Qualifier is already done, which leaves only the finals left on the menu from Feb. 23 to 25 . Now, the remaining 48 players will battle it out for the grand prize of $1 million and the title of first SF6 world champion heading into the next wave of DLC .

From Feb. 23 to 25, 48 players who have qualified from offline and offline premier events, the World Warrior Circuit’s Regional Finals, and the LCQ will battle it out in Burbank for $1 million. The Street Fighter League World Championship 2023 will also be held during this event.

  • Eight groups of six players each will play in a single set of round-robin, first-to-two matches.
  • After completion (and any subsequent tiebreakers), the top player will advance to the upper bracket of the playoffs, while the second-place finisher will slot into the lower bracket. The remaining four players are eliminated.
  • The top team from the SFL Pro-US, SFL Pro-EU, and SFL Pro-JP circuits compete in a three-stage, round-robin group stage until one team is eliminated.
  • The final two teams compete to earn 70 points against each other using the SFL’s scoring system .
  • The remaining 16 players are moved into the double-elimination playoff stage. Losing once in the lower bracket results in a player being eliminated.
  • Every match is a first-to-three. In Grand Finals, if the player entering from the lower bracket completes a “bracket reset” by winning the first best-of-three, a second best-of-three set will be played.

Capcom Pro Tour 2024/2025 Announced, Capcom Cup XI Prize Revealed

With the first Street Fighter 6 Capcom Cup winner crowned and his prize money presented, attention quickly shifted to what it to come next.

A new season of Street Fighter 6 beckons and we got the announcement trailer for the next chapter in the Capcom Cup story. Capcom President, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, took to the stage to announce plans for the new Capcom Pro Tour season which will kick off from June.

Tsujimoto teased fans by saying that the prize pool will revert to previous years, but  announced to the delight of all present that Capcom Cup XI's winner will also walk away with $1,000,000.

The specifics of the sharing formula is unknown, as is the exact overall prize pool. It is expected that there will be more clarity as time goes on.

The new season trailer also promised at offline events, however, it wasn't stated how much offline events there would be and how many players will be entering the tournament this time. Fans have long since yearned for more offline events, and it is possible that Capcom will change the format of Capcom Cup again. That said, Tsujimoto's words do hint at retaining the more worldwide focus of the last couple of Capcom Cups.

There was also no news on Akuma, or the balance patch that is expected soon.

With explosive style, a diverse roster of characters, a new system built for creativity, and more ways to play than ever, Street Fighter 6 has something for everyone – new and old fans alike – and will be ready to take on all contenders

Powered by Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine, Street Fighter 6 spans three distinct game modes, including Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub. The experience also includes innovative new gameplay features, plus enhanced visuals for every aspect of the game.

The RE Engine enables the development team to bring-to-life fine details like individual muscles tensing up, cinematic Super Arts, and special stage effects like cherry blossom petals twirling along with each character’s movement, all in an effort to enhance the gameplay experience like never before. Pair these enhancements with the splashes of paint and street aesthetic, and you get the distinct art style of Street Fighter 6 .

In addition to new gameplay innovations, Street Fighter 6 also celebrates what fans love about the franchise by uniting core fighting modes from previous titles – including Arcade Mode, online matches, Training Mode, local versus battles and more – to the Fighting Ground experience. From iconic World Warriors like Ryu and Chun-Li, to the final addition to the Street Fighter V roster Luke, and our new expert breakdancer Jamie, players will have a wide range of fighting styles and skills to master.

Congratulations to UMA, winner of a momentous Capcom Cup X and the fighting game community’s biggest-ever grand prize - $1 million! Thank you to everyone that supported the Capcom Pro Tour (CPT) 2023 season, including the players, sponsors, and passionate community around the world! Capcom Cup X marked the first time that  Street Fighter 6  was used in a Capcom Cup competition, with a massive celebration for the community in the form of a whopping $1 million grand prize. To continue the momentum, it was announced that next year’s Capcom Cup XI will also feature a $1 million grand prize! Ryu continues training on his endless quest to find true strength. Well-mannered and sincere, he travels the globe in search of worthy opponents. Having overcome the Satsui no Hado, he now yearns for something greater.

Ryu has new moves to reflect his growth over the years. He uses Hashogeki to concentrate his ki in his palms and unleashes it a short distance forward. It’s useful as a follow-up after block strings and combos. During Denjin Charge, Ryu envelops his fists with the Power of Nothingness, enhancing special moves such as Hadoken and Hashogeki. Ryu is vulnerable while performing this move, so careful timing is critical.

Chun-Li is a former agent from the ICPO (International Criminal Police Organization). She now looks after Li-Fen, a victim of the Black Moon Incident from Street Fighter V .  With Shadaloo now fallen, Chun-Li teaches kung fu classes and has become a beloved member of the local community.

Like the legend she is, Chun-Li also has new moves in Street Fighter 6 . During Tensho Kicks, Chun-Li rises into the air with a flurry of kicks, which is useful for countering an opponent’s jump attack or to close out combos. She also has a new Unique Move called Serenity Stream, which sees her positioning herself close to the ground. During this stance, Chun-Li’s each normal attack button produces different attacks.

Luke uses his background as a contractor for a private military company to teach mixed martial arts. He spends his days off eating junk food, playing video games, and challenging opponents to a good old fight. Nevertheless, he always has victory in his sights.

Luke’s DDT is a powerful throw activated after the first hit of an Overdrive (OD) Flash Knuckle and is useful for dishing out extra damage. His Fatal Shot fires an additional shockwave after an OD Sand Blast to secure more damage after trading projectiles.

Jamie is a self-styled Chinatown peacekeeper who aspires to walk in the footsteps of Yun and Yang, the Twin Dragons. An expert dancer, Jamie places justice and friendship above all else, defending his town with martial arts.

The Devil Inside is Jamie’s signature move where he takes a swig out of his ki-unleashing drink to raise his Drink Level where higher levels unlock additional moves – and changes his appearance. Jamie can use Luminous Dive Kick at Drink Level 1+, where he extends his leg after a forward jump and quickly drops to the ground.  Another Special Move is Bakkai, which can be used at Drink Level 2+, where Jamie slides along the ground in a series of rotating, upside-down kicks. This move does heavy damage, and is useful when performing combos against opponents that have left themselves wide open.

We look forward to revealing more about which other combatants will join the roster of playable characters later this year.

New Control Scheme

For those who are worried that fighting game inputs are too complicated, Capcom would like to introduce you to Street Fighter 6’s Modern Control Type, where a special move can be performed by combining the “Special Move” button with one directional input. Furthermore, simple combos can be performed by holding down the “Assist” button and continuously pressing some of the attack buttons. Take a look at the chart below to see how much easier it is to perform your character’s flashiest attacks, including Drive System moves. As you can also see, the Classic Control Type is still available for more seasoned players. Feel free to switch between the two!

New Core Fighting Mechanics

Street Fighter 6 marks the debut of the new Drive System, which includes both new and familiar features that will test your creativity. The Drive System allows you to use five different techniques to enhance your offense and defense. Using these techniques will deplete the Drive Gauge, which consists of six Drive Stocks. Some techniques use more stocks than others. While the Drive Gauge does replenish over time, if you happen to run out, you’ll be temporarily put in a vulnerable state called Burnout. During Burnout, if your opponent hits you with Drive Impact in the corner of the stage and makes your back slam against the wall, you’ll be Stunned – that’s right Stun works differently in Street Fighter 6.

In-Game Commentating

A few well-known Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators and notable faces are lending their voices to be featured in Street Fighter 6 . They will offer dynamic real-time commentary as your matches go on and provide easy-to-understand explanations about gameplay. The Real Time Commentary Feature will also support subtitles in 13 languages for more accessibility. The first commentators to hype up your matches are Jeremy “Vicious” Lopez and Aru! More commentators will be unvoled at a later date.

New Foundations

Street Fighter 6 contains three foundational pillars, each with multiple features or additional modes under them. In Fighting Ground, you will get the classic (and upgraded) fighting game experience, complete with the core modes you expect. The other two pillars are exciting new additions to the series. World Tour is a single-player immersive story mode that pushes the boundaries of what a fighting game is and allows you to leave your own legacy within Street Fighter 6 with your player avatar. Battle Hub, which was briefly shown at the end of Announce Trailer, will also offer players new and unique ways to engage and communicate. Both World Tour and Battle Hub will require a deeper dive in the future, so keep an eye out!

Capcom will also have much more to share on World Tour and Battle Hub as Street Fighter 6 gets closer to launch. For now, what we can share is that World Tour is a single-player immersive story mode that pushes the boundaries of what a fighting game is and allows players to leave their own legacy with their player avatar. Battle Hub, shown only briefly so far, provides players with new and unique ways to engage, communicate and interact.

Street Fighter 6 is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC ( Steam ).

To commemorate t he release of Street Fighter 6 —the latest game in the series-Capcom provided what it calls its “largest-ever prize pool” of over $2M (approximately 300 million yen) in total prize money for the Capcom Pro Tour 2023. The Capcom Cup X championship tournament was held from Feb. 17-26 and saw player UMA crowned as champion. The competitions attracted more than 190K concurrent viewers across YouTube and Twitch during the livestream.

Season 2 and Akuma release date window for Street Fighter 6, discussing potential damage nerfs

None

We know the next Capcom Pro Tour will kick off in June of 2024, and that characters must be out for a full week before they're tournament eligible for the CPT.

Akuma is going to be playable in a Real Life Battle Hub in Japan the first week of May, so it's very clear he's right around the corner if they're making him available to the general public. He is also expected to be released with the Season 2 balance changes, as Capcom often rolls out these types of major updates together.

A gameplay trailer for Akuma is expected to happen right around or before he's released for the Real Life Battle Hub, as we previously saw a teaser trailer for him, and it's unlikely Capcom would make the official gameplay footage of Akuma come from the Real life Battle Hub show floor.

Akuma will likely be coupled with a Fighting Pass too, and a design change for the Battle Hub. When that previously happened with Rashid, A.K.I. and Ed, those characters were made live from 20 to 26 days after their Fighting Passes were made available.

As such, it's looking very likely that we'll be seeing Akuma released officially near the end of May, on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, so it's looking like May 27th through the 29th is the most likely window for Akuma and the Season 2 balance changes.

Timestamps 0:00 Season 2 & Akuma's release date 3:57 Damage nerf potential for Drive Rush in Season 2

Potential Damage Nerfs

Speaking of Season 2 balance changes, we're anticipating that the developers might incorporate some big damage adjustments to the game. The team behind Street Fighter regularly adjusts the damage characters do in the franchise, often near the time the first major balance patch is released, although it can come later in the pipeline as well.

Looking back at the history of the franchise, this has been happening regularly since the Street Fighter 4 era, where a little over a year after that game was released on the consoles, Capcom heavily nerfed a lot of the cast's ability to do damage with Ultras, that game's comeback mechanic.

From the vanilla release of Street Fighter 4 to Super Street Fighter 4, characters lost about 5 to 15% of the damage on their Ultras, and some of their other moves.

Similarly, two years after Street Fighter 5 was released, Capcom applied a universal damage nerf of 10% on all combos that involved a V-Trigger activation, which was one of the main ways of dealing damage and one of the most popular tactics to use throughout that game's lifespan.

Because of the history here, and the amount of complaints about Drive Rush, there's a possibility that Capcom will look to decrease the damage dealt in Street Fighter 6 in Season 2 with this move.

This is traditionally done by increasing the damage scaling, in other words, when you do an attack instead of doing 100% of the damage it normally does, it does 90%, a 10% damage nerf. That's often how Capcom adjusts stuff in this modern era.

I think Capcom is going to look at two specific things in Street Fighter 6, Raw Drive Rush in neutral and Level 3s.

There have been quite a few proposals to reduce the effectiveness of Drive Rush in neutral, by giving it punish counter status, where right now it only gives counter hit status.

Raw Drive Rush in neutral has a 15% multiplier damage scaler on it, and I could see this increasing to 20% or 25% in Season 2, basically making combos that start in this fashion doing about 5-10% less damage.

Level 3s are also often the deciding factor in rounds with the way the game is played currently. People tend to clam up quite a bit once Level 3s are available, because of the extremely high damage, where you're seeing pro players drain 60%-70% of an opponent's life bar with these. That's a tremendous amount of damage to deal with a single combo.

There are multiple other benefits to Level 3s as is, like draining about a bar and a half of Drive Gauge and allowing you to recover your own Drive Gauge meter while the animation plays out, so I really wonder if the damage will be adjusted on these to maybe do about 5% less overall. As is, Level 3s have an 10% immediate damage scaling property, so I could see this going up to 15% or even 20%.

While we're discussing universal changes, it's a lock that the cast members who weren't touched heavily in the Ed balance update are going to get some adjustments as well, so individual changes are also going to be coming into the fold for these cast members.

It's normal for players to get better and learn to perform longer and more damaging combos, and as such, the developers may feel the need to adjust the life that attacks drain.

This has happened regularly with the last two entries in the Street Fighter franchise, prior to SF6, so it seems likely that damage adjustments will once again be a thing headed into Season 2 of the current game.
