Zhangjiajie Tour

Hi Samantha,

Sunrise was very nice and checked us in to a nice room at 8:30 am. It’s been a while since we were in Shanghai, and it is a wonderful, clean city that’s very vibrant. It has been sunny and warm the last four days.

Dear Wing Zeng,

My family and I have now arrived safely back at home in Bangkok. We had a wonderful time on the cruise, and we would like to thank you very much for assisting us on the whole process, from booking the cabins to arranging transportation from Jingzhou to Maoping port. We are very impressed with your service.

As for your questions, here is my response:

1A: Wing Zeng always responds to our emails very promptly. At the beginning when I planned to book the cruise, Wing Zeng has been very patient to respond to all my questions about the cruise itinerary and the cabin types. I am very happy with her service.

2A: With Wing Zeng's help, our tour arrangements were very smooth. Our family travel with one senior and one small child, so we were very careful about transportation to and from the port. On the day of embarkation, Wing Zeng helped us book a van transfer directly from our hotel in Jingzhou to the port, which made the embarkation process very smooth and enjoyable.

3A: Definitely. I highly recommend your service to anyone who wants to take the Yangtze cruises.

4A: I'm very satisfied with your service. Our travel consultant is very helpful and professional.

5A: It would be nice if you could give a little warning that the water level in Chongqing might be too low around this time of year. Originally, our cruise was scheduled to end at Chongqing Chaotianmen port. But because of the low water level, we had to disembark somewhere else and took a 2-hour drive to Chaotianmen. The cruise arranges the transfer smoothly and it worked out fine in the end. But if this is something that happens usually around this time of year, it would be nice to be given a little warning beforehand.

Here are some expert planning tips to help you get started:

1. What is the best way to tour China?

China is a very large country, but it has built a comprehensive transportation system of airports, trains, highways, subways, ports, and waterways that is world class in many places.

For Western travelers, we suggest traveling between destinations by air or by high-speed railway. For journeys of more than 1,200 km (720 miles), it is probably better to take a plane. For less than that, a bullet train may be a more convenient and comfortable choice.

For traveling in the remote areas of China, a private transfer is recommended if there is no flight or bullet train.

2. How many days should I spend in China?

For first-timers, we recommend at least 8 days for the classic Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai route, but a 14-day tour would allow you to experience a cruise on the Yangtze River and see the scenery of Guilin as well.

If you are planning a return trip, we will suggest the optimum number of days according to the destinations you are interested in.

3. How much does a tour of China cost?

The cost ranges from 220 to 350 USD per person per day, based on a private China tour for two persons. This includes domestic transportation, private guides, private transfers, hotels, attraction tickets, and lunches on touring days.

Weather

Beijing's spring brings rapid temperature shifts, dry, windy weather, and limited rainfall. Subsolar point movement and mid-latitude circulation changes create unstable conditions, with increased cyclonic activity and more windy days. Spring sees 10% of annual rainfall, but high evaporation rates lead to dry conditions, known as "spring drought."

Industry (including mining, manufacturing, construction, and power) contributed 46.8 percent of GDP in 2010 and occupied 27 percent of the workforce in 2007. As of 2015, the manufacturing industrial sectors contribute 40% of China's GDP. The manufacturing sector produced 44.1 percent of GDP in 2004 and accounted for 11.3 percent of total employment in 2006. China is the world’s leading manufacturer of chemical fertilizers, cement, and steel. Prior to 1978, most output was produced by state-owned enterprises. • Airbus Tianjin Assembly Plant

France-based aircraft manufacturer Airbus opened its first non-European aircraft assembly plant in the port city of Tianjin in 2008, that is, Airbus (Tianjin) Final Assembly Co., Ltd.

china industrial tour

Airbus Tianjin Final Assembly Line is a joint-venture between Airbus and a Chinese consortium, comprising Tianjin Free Trade Zone (TFTZ) and China Aviation Industry Corporation (AICC). Airbus has a 51% stake in the Tianjin plant, while the remainder is held by the TFTZ and AICC. The deal was originally agreed to extend till 2016; and in March 2014, they agreed to extend the successful Joint Venture for another 10 years, from 2016 to 2025.

The Airbus Tianjin site extends over a total area of 590,000 square meters. There are dedicated hangars, office buildings and related facilities. Since 2008, there has been assembling the A319 and A320 of the A320 Family. The Airbus A320 Family Final Assembly line in Tianjin (FALC) is the third single-aisle aircraft final assembly line location of Airbus worldwide, following Toulouse in France and Hamburg in Germany.

Workers at the Tianjin plant assemble planes from parts shipped from Europe and are responsible for the interior and painting. Each one is tested before being delivered to customers. All aircrafts can be assembled and delivered in China to the same standards as those assembled and delivered in Europe. Around 210 medium-range A320 aircraft have so far been assembled, which now produces four of them in one month. And, there are plans to adapt this line to produce the more fuel-efficient A320neo aircraft in the future.

Within, the A330 Completion and Delivery Centre in Tianjin (C&DC Tianjin) will be set up to cover activities such as cabin installation, aircraft painting, engine runs and aircraft delivery.

Touring past, present and future

Touring past, present and future

The MIFA 1862 arts center in Pudong, a former shipyard, is one of the attractions of an “Industrial Legacy” tour.

Touring past, present and future

The interior of MIFA 1862 is astonishingly well preserved.

With Shanghai Tourism Festival in full swing, five new tours offer a chance to peer into Shanghai’s industrial past, present and future.

Well known as China’s financial center, Shanghai was also the cradle of the country’s industrialization and is at the forefront of technological and manufacturing development today.

The city has 290 industrial heritage sites, such as the 137-year-old Yangshupu Water Plant, and is home to leading manufacturers such as COMAC, developer of China’s first long-haul airliner.

According to the tourism bureau, four sites on the Huangpu River will form one route.

The crenelated Yangshupu Water Plant has been supplying the city with water since 1881 and continues to do so. About 10 minutes’ walk away, stands an English-style country house, once home to the British boss of the city’s first foreign-built cotton mill. The two are iconic landmarks on the riverside walkway in Yangpu District.

Across the river in the Pudong New Area, opposite Yangpu, stand the MIFA 1862 arts center, renovated from a shipyard built in 1862, and the Minsheng silo built in 1908, once the largest grain silo in Asia, now another arts venue.

Another tour, “Smart City Interactive Experience” links Huaxin Exhibition Center, Google Developer Groups, Huaxin Wisdom Hub, Shanghai Radio Museum and the Mobike Exhibition Hall, showing the city’s involvement in innovative ideas such as the sharing economy and environmental-friendly offices.

Shanghai International Circuit

A “Dynamic” route is all about cars and includes the SAIC Volkswagen plant, the auto museum and Shanghai International Circuit, home to the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix since 2004.

COMAC, the Commercial Aircraft Corp of China, is the driving force behind the domestically made C919 and ARJ21 aircraft. Sany Group is the world’s fifth biggest machinery manufacturer. Shanghai Electric’s heavy equipment manufacturing Lingang base is equipped with super-modern and rarely seen machinery. Together, these three sites form a tour devoted to the bright future of heavy manufacturing.

The last route, “Exploring Smart Life,” goes from Shanghai Supercomputer Center past the Integrated Circuit Museum and on to iFLYTEK, a company dedicated to research in intelligent speech synthesis.

All the sites are open to the public, but some have admission fees. Maps and information leaflets are available from tourist information centers across the city.

The bureau yesterday released a three-year development plan to turn the city into a model of industrial tours by 2020, with 22 manufacturing companies, industrial parks and museums forming an alliance to promote the tours.

The bureau will build 10 bases for the tours and identify 100 locations. At least 15 million visitors are expected to take these industrial tours each year.

China's industrial push risks destabilizing the global economy and watering down green-energy exports, Janet Yellen warns

  • US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warns that China's big industrial-production push could destabilize the global economy.
  • China's growing clean energy industry has oversupplied markets with cheap solar panels and EVs, she said in prepared comments that will be delivered on Wednesday.
  • "It is important to the president and me that American firms and workers can compete on a level playing field," Yellen said in speech text released by the Treasury.

China is flooding markets with a lot of cheap green energy products, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is concerned about what it means for the global economy.

Yellen is set to speak at the Suniva solar cell factory in Norcross, Georgia on Wednesday, where she is expected to address concerns about China's export strategy.

"China's overcapacity distorts global prices and production patterns and hurts American firms and workers, as well as firms and workers around the world," a copy of Yellen's remarks reviewed by the New York Times said. "Challenges for individual firms can lead to concentrated supply chains, negatively impacting global economic resilience."

Related stories

After suffering a sweeping property crisis, China is jump-starting its trying to jumpstart its economy with a strong industrial push, incentivizing investment in the manufacturing sector. And that policy shift includes a focus on clean energy. A recent report from the New York Federal Reserve shows the country is seeing a notable redistribution of credit, with a swift rise in new "green loans."

Last year, China's ballooning clean energy industry contributed to 40% of the country's economic growth.

But that comes with consequences. Yellen's remarks warn that this is history repeating itself, like when China overinvested in steel and aluminum, which promoted economic growth in the country but forced the industry in the rest of the world to contract.

This trend has already been manifesting in markets like that for solar panels. Solar panel prices have plunged 50% because of a substantial oversupply. In Europe, a glut of Chinese imports have pushed one of their largest solar module production sites to close. According to the IEA, China is set to account for 85% of the expansion of solar-module manufacturing capacity by 2028.

"It is important to the president and me that American firms and workers can compete on a level playing field," the excerpts reportedly said. "We have raised overcapacity in previous discussions with China, and I plan to make it a key issue in discussions during my next trip there."

  • Top economy stories: China's industrial profits return to growth; Fed posts loss in 2023; Sri Lanka's central bank cuts interest rates.

1. China's industrial profits return to growth

Industrial firms in China posted higher profits in the opening months of 2024, according to official data.

The National Bureau of Statistics said that profits at industrial firms increased by 10.2% in January and February, compared to a year earlier. Profits had declined by 2.3% across the whole of 2023.

The jump comes amid other positive indicators for the Chinese economy, reports Reuters.

"If the recovery of manufacturing continues, it would contribute toward reaching the 2024 growth target, but more supportive policies are still needed to sustain the momentum and recovery," Lynn Song, Chief Economist for Greater China at ING, told Reuters.

The financial services industry is facing several future risks, including vulnerabilities to cyberattacks due to artificial intelligence and new financial products creating debt.

2. Fed posts loss in 2023

The US Federal Reserve saw a net negative income of $114.3 billion last year, a record loss. The preliminary figure is a result of expenses tied to managing the bank's short-term interest rate target.

The Fed, by law, hands over profits to the Treasury, and earns incomes from services provided to the financial system and interest on securities it owns. Over recent years it has earned significant profits.

To maintain interest rate targets, the Fed pays banks, funds and other financial firms to park cash with it, which means it has been paying out significantly more in interest.

Rush to tame inflation pushes Fed into loss.

3. News in brief: Stories on the economy from around the world

Land prices in Japan rose at their quickest pace in 33 years in 2023, returning to their pre-COVID-19 levels.

South Korean consumer confidence fell in March, amid concerns around higher produce prices, according to a new survey from the country's central bank. The Bank of Korea has also warned that further slumps in the real estate sector could hit broader economic growth.

Sri Lanka's central bank has cut interest rates by 50 basis points. The move was unexpected, as a majority of the Reuters economists polled had predicted rates would remain unchanged.

Sales of new, single-family homes in the US fell unexpectedly last month. However, the market remains short of previously owned homes.

Core inflation in Singapore increased at its fastest rate in seven months in February, with the Lunar New Year driving prices higher. Core inflation was 3.6% in February from a year earlier, up from 3.1% in January.

Consumer confidence in South Africa improved in the first quarter of 2024, although still sits in negative territory, rising from -17 points to minus -15 points on the Consumer Confidence Index.

Official figures show the UK economy entered recession last year, with gross domestic product shrinking 0.1% in the third quarter, and 0.3% in the fourth quarter.

US, China Discuss Economic Issues On Yellen’s China Tour

GettyImages-2133934284

Voice of America

Voice of America (VOA) is the largest U.S. international broadcaster, providing news and information in more than 40 languages to an estimated weekly audience of more than 275 million people.

What you need to know

The US and China have agreed to establish two economic groups addressing American concerns about China's economic model, global economic growth, and money laundering.

By William Yang TAIPEI, TAIWAN — The United States and China have agreed to hold talks and create two economic groups focused on a wide range of issues — including addressing American complaints about China’s economic model, growth in domestic and global economies and efforts against money laundering — according to a statement released Saturday by the U.S. Treasury Department.

The agreement comes on the second day of an official visit to China by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, during which she has urged Chinese leaders to change their domestic manufacturing policies.

The two sides are set to hold “intensive exchanges” on cultivating more balanced economic growth and combating money laundering.

Yellen said the efforts would establish a structure for Beijing and Washington to exchange views and address Chinese industrial overcapacity, its ability to supply more product than is demanded.

“I think the Chinese realize how concerned we are about the implications of their industrial strategy for the United States, for the potential to flood our markets with exports that make it difficult for American firms to compete,” she told journalists after the announcement Saturday.

Yellen was en route to Beijing after beginning her five-day visit in the southern city of Guangzhou, which is a key manufacturing and export center for China.

While the issue of China’s industrial overcapacity will not be resolved instantly, Yellen said Chinese officials understand it’s an “important issue” for Americans, adding that her exchanges with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng will facilitate a discussion around macroeconomic imbalances and their connection to overcapacity.

China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported Chinese officials “comprehensively responded” to the issue of industrial overcapacity raised by the Americans. “Both sides agreed to continue to maintain communication,” an official readout said.

The announcement came a day after Yellen urged Beijing to reform its trade practices and create “a healthy economic relationship” with the U.S. It also follows Chinese state media’s warning that Washington may consider rolling out more protectionist policies to shield U.S. companies.”

Some analysts say the announcement reflects Yellen’s effort to push forward on collaboration in areas the U.S. and China agreed on during U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s San Francisco summit last November.

“When Xi met Biden in November, they agreed to set up working groups, so Yellen is continuing to push that forward with the meeting,” Dexter Roberts, director of China affairs at the University of Montana's Mansfield Center, told VOA by phone.

While he called the announcement a positive development, Roberts said he does not think Beijing and Washington will reach agreement on contentious trade issues during Yellen’s trip.

“There could be temporary things like China easing off on subsidizing electric vehicles a bit, but it’s unclear how either side is going to change what's happening in a way that allows the tension over trade to lessen,” he said.

Beijing’s displeasure

While Washington highlighted threats posed by China’s industrial overcapacity, Beijing focused on its concerns about U.S. export controls on Chinese companies during the meeting between Yellen and He.

“The Chinese side expressed serious concerns over Washington’s restrictive economic and trade measures against China,” read the Chinese readout published by Xinhua.

Some experts say the United States and China could make progress on U.S. export restrictions on Chinese companies.

“Some U.S. businesses are calling for the government to remove some of the export restrictions, especially for chips [integrated circuits],” Victor Shih, director of the 21st Century China Center at the University of California in San Diego, told VOA by phone.

Since China is either already making, or is on the cusp of making, some of the computer chips on the sanctions list, Shih said he thinks restricting U.S. companies from selling some of the chips to China will only hurt American interests. “It’s really not hurting China that much,” he said.

In addition to U.S. controls on exports to Chinese entities, Shih said the other big topic Chinese officials are likely to raise in meetings with Yellen is potential tariffs Washington may impose on Chinese products.

“Since China is the largest exporter in the world, it’s not in its interest for there to be a lot of tariffs around the world, especially for major importers like the U.S.,” he said, adding that talking to Washington about lowering tariffs and not enacting new ones will be an important agenda item for Beijing.

While she has not explicitly promised to impose new sanctions on Chinese products, Yellen said she would not rule out the possibility of adopting more measures to safeguard the American supply chain for electric vehicles, batteries or solar panels from heavily subsidized Chinese green energy products.

During a phone call Tuesday with Biden, Xi warned that if the United States is “adamant on containing China's high-tech development and depriving China of its legitimate right to development, China is not going to sit back and watch.”

Bilateral communication

Despite persistent differences over contentious trade issues, Yellen and He underscored the importance for China and the U.S. to “properly respond to key concerns of the other side” to build a more cooperative economic relationship.

“It also remains crucial for the two largest economies to seek progress on global challenges like climate change and debt distress in emerging markets in developing countries, and to closely communicate on issues of concern such as overcapacity and national security-related economic actions,” Yellen said Friday.

Based on Yellen and He’s comments and signals from the Biden-Xi call Tuesday, some analysts say the U.S. and China will continue to put guard rails around the bilateral relationship to prevent it from further deteriorating.

“The two sides have come to the realization that they will have to live together, perhaps uncomfortably at times,” said Zhiqun Zhu, an expert on Chinese foreign policy at Bucknell University.

While the relationship will remain highly competitive, Zhu said he thinks Beijing and Washington will “stay engaged and seek cooperation in areas of common interest.”

“Maintaining stability is the priority for both Xi and Biden now,” he said.

Yellen is scheduled to have meetings with other senior officials Sunday and Monday in Beijing.
