The second series of TV programme Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman sees the Scottish comedian explore the festive delights of the river Danube, from Christmas markets and ice skating to carol singing, on an AmaWaterways cruise

Following Susan’s adventure through Norway last year, where she witnessed the Northern Lights, went husky sledding and cruised through icy fjords, the new series sees her embark on a cruise along the famous Danube river to showcase its festive delights.

Discovering everything from Christmas markets and medieval villages to enchanted castles and historic palaces, Susan explores the cities of Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest in the two episodes.

Set on board AmaWaterways’ double-width AmaMagna, which launched in 2019 , it is the first time a river cruise has been featured in the series.

Susan Calman’s Danube cruise

“This is lovely and Christmassy,” said Susan as she boarded the 200-passenger ship, greeted by crew wearing festive Santa hats and decked out with wreaths and festive decorations.

Her stateroom – one of 98 on board the ship, which is larger than most river-cruise vessels – was also given a few festive touches.

“This is incredible, it’s like my own little grotto with twinkly lights – nothing screams Christmas like a twinkly light! It’s like one of those four poster beds you get in a fancy country house, but my curtain is made out of twinkly lights.

“There’s hardly any noise, it’s super gentle, sunlight gleaming off the water. It’s that perfect stately way of travelling.”

Danube’s Christmas markets

The Danube flows through four European capital cities – Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. In Vienna, enchanting Christmas markets feature among grand buildings like the Schonbrunn Palace, Belvedere Palace and City Hall, with the latter featuring free performances from international choirs.

Visiting the Christmas market in Salzburg, which dates back to the 16th century, Susan said: “I’ve been to a market before, but not one this big.

“I’m always quite wide-eyed when I come to these places. There are Christmas trees absolutely everywhere and it’s just so gorgeous.”

Foodie highlights along the journey include seeing Susan tuck into a traditional cinnamon-dusted ‘chimney cake’ in Prague, gingerbread made to a centuries-old family recipe in Passau, and a steaming mug of spiced fruit-and-rum punch.

In Salzburg, Susan tasted gluhwein and Mozartkugel, also known as ‘Mozart balls’, a local speciality sweet.

Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman Review

Just when you thought it couldn’t get more festive than cruising the Norwegian Fjords in search of the Northern Lights, Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman returns for a Christmas Market cruise on the Danube. 

Last year, Scottish comedian and Strictly contestant Susan Calman replaced Jane McDonald on Channel 5’s Cruising with … sailing from Dover into the Arctic Circle with Hurtigruten Expeditions . This year, she joined AmaWaterways on a week-long river cruise from Germany to Budapest. 

Before boarding the AmaMagna , Susan spent some time in Prague, where she visited the Czech Republic’s famous Christmas market and got into the festive spirit during an overnight stay. Then the time came for Susan to board her cruise in Vilshofen. We saw the AmaMagna magnificently lit with Christmas lights, ready to welcome guests onboard for a jolly old time. “This is lovely and Christmassy”, Susan said as she approached the ship. “Santa has his sleigh, and I have the AmaMagna.” 

Twice the width of a standard river ship, the state-of-the-art AmaMagna offers more space, larger staterooms and more facilities than any other river ship in Europe.

For those who want to know what to expect from a river ship this time of year, “It just screams Christmas. The halls have been well and truly decked, and every corner has been bedazzled with some festive finery.” Susan’s room also had a few Christmassy touches. “This is incredible. It’s like my own grotto!” she said as she opened the double doors and saw the twinkly lights dangling over her king-size bed before spotting a plate of homemade Christmas cookies on the side. 

Aside from twinkling Christmas trees and giant nutcrackers, what other festive treats does a Christmas river cruise with AmaWaterways offer? Linz is known for being the City of Christmas creches and its ever popular Linzer torte.  While here, you have a choice of excursions.

The first is a morning walking tour through Linz’s old city center and by the Mozart House, where the famous musician composed the Linz Symphony in only three days, as well as visit Linz’s Christmas Markets.

For the more active explorers, try a guided bike tour around Linz.

Or take a full day trip to Salzburg, known as the setting of the sound of music, where the distinctive city’s Christmas markets also beckon.

During the afternoon, you can visit the charming mountain town, Cesky Krumlov, located just over the Czech Austrian border.

In the morning, you can visit the 900-year-old Melk Abbey situated high atop the granite cliffs of the Danube, or get active with a bike ride to Spitz before returning to Melk and the ship for lunch.

During the afternoon, journey to Spitz and then take a guided excursion to Dürnstein, where you’ll stroll along the cobblestone streets to the Baroque Stiftskirche, with its famed church tower, on a walking tour.

Those who wish a more active adventure of the area can hike to Dürnstein Fortress, cycle through Spitz or hike in the town. In the evening, be treated to an exclusive wine festival where you’ll enjoy some of the region’s famous wines.

The “City of Waltzes” offers a treasure trove of gems just waiting to be discovered.

Join a tour showcasing its regal splendors, such as the majestic Opera House and the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs, before concluding in Vienna’s historic city center. If you prefer a more active adventure, then join a guided bike ride through Vienna.

During the afternoon, you’ll have a chance to explore the beautifully decorated Schönbrunn Christmas Markets, then, cap the day off with an evening visit to the Vienna Rathaus Christmas Market

Host to the crowning ceremonies of 11 Hungarian kings and queens between 1536 and 1830, Bratislava certainly has earned the title “Coronation City of Kings,” as you’ll discover during your walking tour.

You’ll also have an opportunity to visit Bratislava’s charming Christmas Market.

Or join a special “Slovakian Specialties” tour.

For a more active adventure, hike up to Bratislava Castle, offering magnificent views of the city, before discovering the city’s distinctive Christmas Market.

This morning, sit back and watch the beautiful scenery of the Danube Bend go by before arriving in Budapest. Home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Buda Castle quarter in Castle Hill and Heroes’ Square, Budapest offers an unmatched combination of culture and tradition.

Your city tour begins with a visit to the vibrant Great Market Hall.

The remainder of this tour takes you to both the Buda (hilly) and the Pest (flat) sides of the river.

Afterwards, you’ll visit Vörösmarty Square, the oldest, richest and the most spectacular of all the Christmas Markets in Budapest.

As an alternative, you can hike to Castle Hill, walking along Fishermen’s Bastion and take in all the iconic sites of Budapest with an active exploration.

Disembark the ship as you prepare for your flight home.

Arrive in Budapest and board the luxurious AmaMagna.

This evening, meet your fellow travellers at the Welcome Dinner.

For a more culinary-focused experience in Dürnstein, enjoy a wine tasting and special apricot treats from a local boutique.

Those who wish a more active adventure of the area can hike to historic Dürnstein Fotress, or cycle from Krems to Spitz and back for lunch. During the afternoon, cruise through the vineyard-rich Wachau Valley—one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe, where some of Austria’s finest white wines are produced—to Spitz.

Once in Spitz, you can visit the 900-year-old Melk Abbey situated high atop the granite cliffs of the Danube; or get active with either a Spitz-Melk-Spitz bike tour or hiking adventure.

During the evening, be treated to an exclusive wine festival where you’ll enjoy some of the region’s famous wines

Linz is known for being the city of Christmas crèches and its ever-popular Linzer torte. While here, you have a choice of excursions. The first is a full-day visit to Salzburg where you’ll enjoy a walking tour of the UNESCO-designated Old Town, its magnificent cathedral and its Christmas Markets, including the Hellbrunn Palace, where its inner courtyard is turned into a romantic backdrop for one of the most beautiful Christmas Markets in Austria.

Alternatively, you can choose a morning walking tour through Linz’s old city center and by the Mozart House, where he composed the Linz Symphony in only three days, as well as visit Linz’s Christmas Markets.

Or you can go on a guided bike tour through Linz and along the city’s famed “Culture Mile” and the Danube.

Or, visit the charming Czech mountain town of Cesky Krumlov.

All aboard for ‘Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman' on Channel 5 as the comedian replaces Jane McDonald!

In Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman the comedian has big shoes to fill! It’s her first appearance since it was announced that she’d be taking over the ‘ Cruising With ’ series from legendary cruising crooner Jane McDonald.

But there’s plenty of laughter, stunning scenery and a real-life winter wonderland, as Susan boards a Christmas cruise of Norway’s stunning coastline. With a different destination on the agenda every night, she’ll meet local people, explore Christmas markets, spot the Northern Lights and even try a reindeer sledding experience in the Arctic Circle.

Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman will launch on Channel 5 on Monday December 20 at 9pm, with the next episode showing on Tuesday Dec. 21 at 9pm. The two-parter will later be shown on streaming service My5.  We will update with that release date when we can.

The first episode of Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman sees Susan travel from Dover to the southern Norwegian city of Stavanger. On shore a Yule Viking welcome awaits, followed by a visit to Fargegaten (which translates as Colour Street) where all the houses are painted in different colours, based on a Miami Vice inspired colour scheme! Then, it's off to the port town Ålesund, known for its art nouveau architectural style, before the ship navigates the stunning Lofoten Islands where Susan brews some unique ‘Calman’ beer and enjoys a traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner. As the ship crosses the Arctic Circle, temperatures plummet, and Susan joins her fellow passengers for a reindeer sledding experience.

In the second episode of Christmas Cruising with Susan Calman , Susan goes in search of the legendary Northern Lights and has a go at some husky dog sledding in the snowy northern town of Finnsnes. Then it’s on to beautiful Bergen, which has a stunning Christmas market, and a chance to chop down her very own Christmas tree in an enchanted forest nearby. Finally, her trip concludes with some carol singing in Bergen town square.

The first river cruise to receive the Cruising with Susan Calman treatment is aboard AmaWaterways ‘ distinctive double-width ship, AmaMagna!

The festive Christmas Markets of the Danube will be featured in two one-hour specials showing on Channel 5 the week of December 19th, 2022. From Vilshofen, Germany, travel with Susan to Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Watch Susan sailing the Magna on the Danube, then set sail for yourself.

Susan Calman returned in 2024 which a two-part special on yachting! Windstar Cruises was be the featured cruise line on Channel 5’s Cruising with Susan Calman. She set sail aboard the 148-passenger Wind Spirit, a classic sailing yacht. The episodes showcased a 10-night journey through Tahiti and the Tuamotus Islands, focusing on the region’s tranquil natural wonders including immaculate atolls, transparent lagoons, verdant rainforests, and the intriguing culture of Polynesia.

The first episode, airing 12th January 2024, featured the first half of Susan’s adventures including snorkelling with black tip sharks in Fakarava’s Blue Lagoon and visiting Gauguin’s Black Pearl Farm in Rangiroa, both islands within the stunning Tuamotu atolls.

Susan Calman will be seen boarding Holland America’s Signature-class Eurodam  in Fort Lauderdale for a spectacular 10-night Panama Canal Sunfarer voyage. Join Susan as she enjoys the five-star amenities of  Eurodam , chats with guests – and experiences some thrilling adventures ashore.

During the first of two episodes. Susan will visit Holland America Line’s stunning private island of Half Moon Cay, then call into the gorgeous Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curacao. Episode 2, will feature the modern world wonder that is the Panama Canal plus the incredible rainforest scenery of Costa Rica.

Holland America Line will operate a series of similar 10 and 11-night Panama Canal Sunfarer voyages during winter 2022/3, also onboard  Eurodam , as well as a programme of full Panama Canal transits and leisurely cruises which feature some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful islands, including calls into Half Moon Cay – which celebrated 25 years on 12 th  December 2022!

Prepare to be wowed by the tallest slide at sea, Ultimate Abyss℠, deck-defying stunts at the AquaTheater and the robot-helmed Bionic Bar. Not to mention dazzling Broadway performances and globe-trotting gastronomic experiences that go from Asia to the Mediterranean, and beyond.

APRIL 2022: Cruising with Susan Calman is back with a two-part special, aboard Princess Cruises’ gorgeous ship Regal Princess!

Follow Susan as she sails on a 12-night Canary Islands cruise aboard Regal Princess from Southampton to visit the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote, before heading to Madeira and the Spanish port of Vigo. Onboard the MedallionClass Regal Princess, Susan tries her hand at cocktail flaring, gets involved with flower arranging for a wedding at sea, enjoys a pampering session and serves afternoon tea in The Sanctuary. Susan also uses the cruise line’s Medallion, a ten pence-sized wearable device that enables features such as expedited contactless boarding and locating friends and family anywhere on the ship, as well as enhanced services such as having food, drinks and retail items delivered to wherever guests are onboard.
