How to Fix “WebKit Encountered an Internal Error”

Postient

Encountering the “WebKit encountered an internal error” can be a frustrating experience. This error typically indicates a problem with your browser’s WebKit, an extension of the CSS syntax used to render content in Safari and Chrome browsers. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the causes of this error and provide detailed solutions to help you resolve it.

Understanding the “WebKit Encountered an Internal Error”

The “WebKit encountered an internal error” usually occurs when your browser cannot render a website due to issues with the WebKit. The causes of this error can range from incorrect browser settings, a faulty WebKit, or a firewall blocking access to the WebKit.

How to Fix the “WebKit Encountered an Internal Error”

Here are some detailed steps you can take to resolve this issue:

  • Clear Website Data : Sometimes, clearing all website data can resolve the issue. To do this, open the Safari app on your device, go to Preferences > Privacy, click Manage Website Data, select the boxes next to one or more websites, and click Remove.
  • Restart Your Device : A simple restart can help refresh your network connection and fix any temporary glitches. To do this, simply shut down your computer and restart it. If you’re on a mobile device, you can also try restarting it to see if the problem resolves.
  • Startup in Safe Mode on your Mac : Starting up in Safe Mode can help troubleshoot the issue. Safe Mode prevents certain software from loading at startup. To do this, shut down your Mac, turn it on, hold the power button until startup options appear, select the startup disk, press the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode,” and log in.
  • Stop MacForge processes in Activity Monitor : MacForge is a plugin manager for macOS that could affect Safari’s functionality. Stopping MacForge processes in Activity Monitor may fix the issue.
  • Upgrade to the Latest Operating System Version : If you haven’t updated your Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc. operating system in a while, WebKit may have become incompatible with other OS modules (like the Safari web browser), causing an internal problem. When this occurs, the WebKit problem may be fixed by upgrading the device’s operating system to the most recent version.
  • Turn Off The VPN Connection on The Gadget : This WebKit issue may appear if your device or Safari web traffic is being routed through a virtual private network (VPN), which may cause disruptions to the web traffic. It’s possible that disabling the VPN on the device or the VPN add-on in the browser would fix the problem.

If you’ve tried all these steps and are still experiencing issues, it might be best to contact Apple Support for further assistance.

How to Fix Webkit Encountered an Internal Error in Safari

Do you keep running into a “Safari cannot open webpage; WebKit encountered an internal error” or a “WebKitErrorDomain:300” error code while attempting to load webpages in your Safari browser? We’ll show you how to fix that on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Apple devices use the WebKit engine to render webpages in Safari. However, various reasons, such as a corrupt Safari cache, conflicting experimental features, and a broken browser configuration, can stop the rendering engine from working, resulting in the “WebKit encountered an internal error.” Run through the fixes below to get Safari working as usual again.

Quit and Re-open Safari

The quickest way to fix Safari’s “WebKit encountered an internal error” is to force-quit and re-open the web browser. That almost always eliminates unexpected glitches and other problems with WebKit.

iPhone and iPad

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or press the Home button twice) to open the App Switcher.
  • Swipe away the Safari card from the screen.
  • Exit to the Home Screen and re-open Safari.
  • Press Command + Option + Escape to open the Force-Quit dialog.
  • Choose Safari and select the Force-Quit button.
  • Wait a few seconds and re-open the web browser via Launchpad or Dock.

Restart Your Devices

If force-quitting Safari didn’t fix the “WebKit Encountered an Internal Error,” you must continue by restarting your iPhone or Mac device. That should resolve random issues on the system side preventing the browser from working.

While restarting a Mac, make sure to stop macOS from saving a buggy Safari application state by unchecking the Reopen windows when logging back in option.

Update the Operating System

The following fix involves updating Safari. Since it’s a native app, the only way to do that is to update the system software on your Apple device to its latest version.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General > Software Update .
  • Tap Download & Install .
  • Open the Apple menu and select System Settings .
  • Select General on the sidebar. Then, select Software Update on the right of the window.
  • Select Update Now (or Restart Now if you only need to finalize the update).

Note : If your Mac runs macOS 12 Monterey or older, open the System Preferences app and select Software Update > Update Now to update its system software.

Clear the Safari Web Cache

If the “WebKit encountered an internal error” persists, it’s time to clear the Safari cache.

iPhone & iPad

  • Scroll down and tap Safari.
  • Tap Clear History and Website Data .
  • Open Safari and select Safari > Clear History on the menu bar.
  • Set Clear to all history .
  • Select Clear History .

Disable All Safari Extensions

Another reason why Safari displays the “WebKit encountered an internal error” is because of unoptimized or conflicting browser extensions. Try disabling them.

  • Open the Settings app and tap Safari .
  • Tap Extensions .
  • Disable all content blockers and extensions.
  • Open Safari and select Safari > Settings / Preferences on the menu bar.
  • Switch to the Extensions tab.
  • Uncheck the boxes next to all add-ons and exit the Preferences pane.

If the “WebKit encountered an internal error” message no longer appears in Safari, open the App Store and install any pending updates to your extensions. Then, re-activate each browser add-on one by one. If a particular extension causes the error message to re-appear, disable or uninstall it and look for an alternative extension.

Enter and Exit Safe Mode (Mac Only)

If the “WebKit encountered an internal error” continues to show up in the Mac version of Safari, try booting your Mac into and out of Safe Mode. That clears various forms of redundant data preventing apps like Safari from working.

Apple Silicon Mac

  • Turn off your MacBook, iMac, or Mac mini.
  • Turn your Mac on again but do not release the Power button; you’ll see the Startup Options screen soon.
  • Hold the Shift key and select Macintosh HD > Safe Mode .
  • Turn off your Mac.
  • Boot your Mac while holding down the Shift key.
  • Release the Shift key once you see the Apple logo.

In Safe Mode, briefly open Safari and check if the WebKit error occurs. If it does, continue clearing additional forms of cached data on your Mac. If not, boot your Mac normally.

Disable the Private Relay Feature

If you subscribe to iCloud+, your iPhone, iPad, or Mac may have a feature called Private Relay active to improve privacy by protecting unencrypted site traffic. However, it’s still in beta and creates problems in Safari. So disable Private Relay and check if that makes a difference.

  • Go to Apple ID > iCloud > Privacy Relay .
  • Turn off the switch next to Private Relay .
  • Open the System Settings app.
  • Select your Apple ID on the sidebar. Then, select iCloud .
  • Disable the switch next to Private Relay .

Note : To disable Private Relay in macOS Monterey or older, go to System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud .

Disable Private Wi-Fi Addresses (iPhone & iPad Only)

On the iPhone and iPad, another reason for the “WebKit encountered an internal error” in Safari is the use of private Mac (Wi-Fi) addresses. To stop that:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone and select the Wi-Fi option.
  • Tap the Info button next to the active Wi-Fi connection.
  • Disable the switch next to Private Wi-Fi Address .

Disable the HTTP/3 Experimental Feature

HTTP/3 is a protocol that improves latency and load times. However, it’s only available as an experimental Safari feature and is prone to breaking things. Check if it’s active and disable it.

  • Tap Safari > Advanced > Experimental Features .
  • Turn off the switch next to HTTP/3 .
  • Open the Safari Settings/Preferences pane.
  • Switch to the Develop tab and check the box next to Show Develop menu in the menu bar .
  • Select Develop on the menu bar, print to Experimental Features , and uncheck the HTTP/3 option.

Reset Experimental Preferences to Defaults

If none of the fixes above help, try resetting all experimental Safari features to their default settings.

  • Scroll down and tap Reset All to Defaults .

Open the Develop menu in Safari (unhide it if you have to), point to Experimental Features , and scroll down to the bottom. Then, select Reset all to Defaults .

Safari Is Working As Usual Again

The troubleshooting tips above should help you resolve the “WebKit encountered an internal error” issue in Safari. Be sure to run through the quick fixes above if you run into the problem again.

Suppose the WebKit error doesn’t go away. If so, switch to a different browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge and wait until a future iOS or macOS update permanently resolves the issue. On the Mac, you can also factory reset Safari to its default settings .

How to Fix Webkit Encountered an Internal Error [Proven Solutions]

Why webkit encountered an internal error.

Webkit encountered an internal error that may be due to Safari browser or network configuration issues on your device. Safari issues range from private relay feature conflicts to corrupted browser history and website data. This error occurs when trying to open a website in the Safari browser. However, the browser fails this and displays the aforementioned error. This error is reported by all Apple devices such as Mac, iPhone, and iPad. In some cases, other apps using the Safari API on Apple devices would also display the error.

1. Legacy device operating systems:

If your device's operating system (such as iOS on an iPhone) does not have the latest patches from Apple, then websites will not load properly in the browser due to incompatibility with other modules (especially Safari), causing an internal WebKit error. may occur.

2. Corrupted Safari browser history and website data:

Corrupted browsing history or website data (such as cookies) can cause internal WebKit errors in Safari. This corruption can interrupt the communication between your browser and the website, causing the current error.

3. iCloud Private Relay Features:

iCloud's Private Relay feature uses a double relay method to mask your IP from ISPs and websites. WebKit errors can occur when data packets exchanged between the Safari browser and a website are corrupted by this intermediary framework.

4. Safari HTTP/3 protocol:

WebKit may display an internal error in Safari when the browser tries to communicate with his website using the HTTP/3 protocol, but the website does not use the HTTP-3 protocol correctly. This can lead to incompatible communication between the website and Safari, causing Safari's WebKit internal error.

How to Fix Webkit Encountered an Internal Error

1. Reboot your device

If force quitting Safari doesn't fix the "WebKit has encountered an internal error" message, you may need to restart your iPhone or Mac device to continue. This should fix random system issues that are preventing your browser from working. When you restart your Mac, be sure to uncheck the Reopen Windows on login option to prevent macOS from saving corrupted Safari application states.

2. Update your operating system

The fix below includes a Safari update. Since this is a native app, your only option is to update your Apple device's system software to the latest version. Clear your Safari cache if you continue to see the "WebKit encountered an internal error" message.

As for iPhones and iPads: Open the Settings. Scroll down and tap Safari. Tap Clear History and Website Data.

As for Mac devices: Open Safari and select Safari > Clear History from the menu bar. Set "Clear All" to "All History". Select Clear History.

3. Disable all Safari extensions

Another reason why Safari might display the "WebKit encountered an internal error" message is that your browser extensions are not optimized or conflicting browser extensions. Try disabling them.

As for iPhones and iPads: Open Settings and tap Safari. Tap "Extensions". Disable all content blockers and extensions.

As for Mac: Open Safari and select Safari > Settings/Preferences from the menu bar. Switch to the Extensions tab. Uncheck the boxes next to all add-ons and exit the settings panel.

4. Disable Private Relay Feature

If you're enrolled in iCloud+, your iPhone, iPad, or Mac may have enabled a “Private Relay” feature, which improves privacy by protecting unencrypted website traffic. However, since it's still in beta, it causes issues with Safari. So try disabling the private relay and see if that makes a difference.

As for iPhones and iPads: Open the Settings. Go to Apple ID > iCloud > Privacy Relay. Turn off the switch next to the private relay.

As for Mac: Open the System Settings. Select your Apple ID in the sidebar. Then select "iCloud". Turn off the switch next to the Private relay.

5. Disable experimental HTTP/3 features

HTTP/3 is a protocol, which is capable of improving latency and load times. However, this is only available as an experimental Safari feature, so it can be easily broken. Check if it is active and disable it.

As for iPhones and iPads: Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Experimental Features. Turn off the switch next to HTTP/3.

As for Mac: Open Safari's Settings/Preferences section. Go to the Develop tab and check the box next to Show Develop Menu in the menu bar. Select Develop from the menu bar, export to Experimental Features, and uncheck HTTP/3.

I hope its not just the anti tracking thing and nothing else really, like 14.4 was. I hope its a bigger update and some treats in there

Another beta, another vague hope crossfade will come to the Music app so it can catch up to the Android version, but a deep knowing it won't be there.

that would be pretty great. Downloading on phone now and then it will install on my watch. Makes you install on phone first this time.

Not able to install this using IPSW file on macOS 11.2 RC3/ now released. Software needs to be downloaded that does not download.

Safari or Webkit issue in IpadOS 16.x

I'm a web developer, specializing in React and Next.js.

Recently, I encountered an issue where a website isn't functioning properly (displaying a white page) in the WebKit engine.

I'm unsure of the cause of this issue and how to resolve it. Interestingly, the website works fine on other browser versions and even on macOS.

I'm keen to understand the root cause of this problem. If anyone would like to review the code, I'm happy to share it

Constantly getting the WebKit encountered an internal error on Mac?

Ever tried to load a webpage in Safari and instead ended up encountering error messages displayed on your screen? The Apple default browser uses the WebKit engine to render web pages.

Moreover, it can be very frustrating if launching the desired search results or website becomes impossible due to receiving internal browser errors, especially the ones you don’t understand.

Corrupted Safari cache, broken browser configuration, and conflicting features are all issues that result in WebKit encountered an internal error on Mac . But don’t fret. We’ve covered various troubleshooting methods below that will help you resolve the problem in no time.

So let’s jump straight to it!

1. Relaunch the Safari App.

One of the basic solutions to fix various problems on Safari, including WebKit encountered an internal error on Mac, is to restart the app. This will refresh the Safari app and eliminate any temporary errors or bugs.

Here are the steps you must follow:

  • Launch the Force-Quit dialog by pressing the Command + Option + Escape shortcut keys from your keyboard.
  • Scroll down and select Safari .
  • Then, click on the Force Quit button.

  • After a few moments, relaunch the Safari app from the dock.

2. Restart Your Mac.

Another quick fix to WebKit encountered an internal error on Mac is to restart your device. This will remove all the background processes and any temporary errors that may have caused the issue.

Simply follow the steps below to reboot your Mac:

  • Click on the Apple logo from the desktop.
  • Then, select Restart from the drop-down menu. This will restart your Mac.

This should resolve the WebKit internal error issue. Otherwise, move to the next method from this guide to update your macOS.

3. Update the macOS.

Updating your Apple devices allows you to use the latest features and eliminate various errors. If your Mac is not up-to-date, it may show incompatibility issues with the Safari app. Therefore, it’s best to occasionally check and install any pending macOS updates.

Follow the steps below to do it:

  • First, click on the Apple icon at the top-left corner of your screen.

4. Clear Safari Web Cache.

Safari web cache can sometimes become full and may cause the WebKit to encounter an internal error on Mac. Therefore, it’s recommended that you occasionally clear Safari cache files from your Mac to resolve the issue at hand.

The default configuration of the Safari app doesn’t allow you to clear the cache data. So you need to enable the option first. Here’s how:

  • Go to the Safari menu while the app is running and choose Preferences .
  • Then, go to the Advanced tab.
  • There, enable Show Develop menu in menu bar .

5. Disable Safari Extensions.

To resolve the problem, disable the extensions one by one and check which particular one is causing the issue.

  • First, open the Safari app .
  • Next, go to the Safari tab and select Settings from the options.
  • Then, the Settings window will open. Click on the Extensions tab.
  • Uncheck the boxes for all extensions or click on the Uninstall button.

7. Disable HTTP/3.

HTTP/3 support in Safari is an experimental feature that allows users to load websites efficiently and securely. Since this feature is in its initial stages, it’s bound to give some errors. Therefore, if you’re trying to fix the WebKit error issue, try disabling the HTTP/3 feature in Safari.

  • First, enable the Develop menu, as explained earlier.
  • After that, click on Develop menu bar.
  • From there, select Experimental Features .

The method of booting into Safe Mode is different for each chipset. For a Mac with an Apple Silicon chip, follow the instructions below:

  • Click on the Apple logo and select the Shut Down option.
  • Once the Mac shuts down, press and hold the Power button for several seconds. This will open the Boot menu .
  • From there, select your Mac Startup disk .
  • Once you’ve selected your Mac Startup disk , press and hold the Shift key from your keyboard.
  • Now, click on Continue in Safe Mode to confirm your action.

Similar to the HTTP/3 feature, there are various experimental features on Mac that may interfere with the normal functioning of Safari. Therefore, it’s best to reset these Safari Experimental features to default to fix the WebKit error.

  • Open the Safari app on your Mac.
  • Go to its settings by clicking on the Safari option and selecting Settings .
  • Next, click on the Advanced tab at the top right corner of the screen.
  • Uncheck the box next to Show Develop menu in menu bar .
  • Then, go to the Develop option from the menu bar.
  • Next, select Experimental Features from the left pane.
