10 Ideas to Support Your Personal Growth Journey
Keep your growth and personal development on track with these key ideas..

- What Does "Self Help" Mean?
- Find a therapist near me
- Humans have the desire and capacity to change, grow, and adapt.
- With so much expert advice available on what we should and could be doing, it can be hard to know where to begin.
- Navigating a personal growth journey begins with looking inward.
We are constantly bombarded with messages telling us that we need to be better, faster, healthier, smarter, richer, stronger, busier: everything “-er.” We find ourselves in a constant state of wanting to improve, to do more, and to be more at any given moment.
Our human condition desires change and growth. But seeking out self-improvement doesn’t always mean that you are unhappy with the person you already are; it’s just that life can feel stagnant without it. We may start to feel dissatisfied, unhappy, and even unfulfilled if we are not learning and changing. To be able to function in a world that is constantly evolving, we need to be able to grow and adapt.
Where do we begin?
In our efforts to improve our habits and behaviours, we often turn to experts for answers. We plow through books and articles on personal development, sign up for courses, attend workshops, and connect with coaches. There are more resources available than ever on personal development topics such as time management , relationship repair, organization, fitness, healthy eating, professional development, stress management , emotion regulation , and more. The self-help and personal development market has become a multibillion-dollar sector globally. This industry is anticipated to continue growing and it is on course to be one of the fastest-growing industries by 2030 (Grand View Research, 2022). This is huge. Yet, we still don’t have all the answers.
The way forward
It can be hard to figure out where to start. Change is complex and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. And we know that knowing better doesn’t equal doing better. It is important to prepare yourself for the journey ahead (and all its messiness and beauty) by building the proper foundation on which to base your change. Here are 10 ideas to keep in mind as you embark on your personal growth journey:
- Prioritize you. The reality is that true personal growth and development come from looking inward. It’s getting to know yourself. Personal development is just that—it’s personal. It’s between you and yourself. You are unique and your situation is unique. It’s not selfish, it is science. You need to look after yourself. No one is coming to fix this for you.
- Become aware using a holistic approach. A holistic approach to personal development recognizes all areas of wellness. I invite you to think about how you are doing and how you hope to grow in these eight dimensions: physical, emotional, intellectual, social, environmental, financial, occupational, and spiritual . Ask yourself what you can do to bring yourself closer to your goals and closer to the person you want to become in each of these areas. There is no one right balance that will benefit two people the same way.
- Make room for your past. Your way forward is not defined by your past. All the things that you have weathered in your life are events, not characteristics. Trust yourself that you handled your life the best you could in the moment with the tools and resources you had. You have not only gone through hard times, but you have also grown through them too.
- Limit social comparison. Most of us will have heard Theodore Roosevelt’s words, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” While it’s valuable to take inspiration from those who inspire you, we need to be mindful that the trajectory forward will not look the same for all of us.
- Build healthy habits consistently. Consistency compounds. Commit to doing one activity, every day, even for just five minutes, that will bring you closer to your goals and the person you want to be. Having goals and something to work towards helps to maintain our drive and gives us a sense of fulfillment.
- Build the team to support the dream. There are guaranteed to be roadblocks, times of low motivation , and other curveballs are thrown our way. Knowing this, we all need a champion. Someone who is in our corner. When our foundation is solid, we create the space needed for growth.
- Embrace the discomfort. Being comfortable doesn’t help us develop. If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. As the popular saying goes, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.” Change is hard and noticeable. It is supposed to be.
- Celebrate your progress. Are you proud of a recent accomplishment? Are you handling or approaching situations better today than you would have five, or even just one year ago? Celebrating even the small wins in our change journey brings awareness to our progress. And it feels good.
- Take it slow. In a fast-paced society, we are often urged to do more, be better, and excel no matter the cost, but this is not sustainable. You don’t need to do a Herculean overhaul of your life. Give yourself permission to rest along the way. After all, growth is a lifelong journey, not a destination.
- Notice your allies. When you commit to personal growth, some people may not support or agree with your choices. Don’t let that deter you. Real allies want to see you living your best life.
Working on making self-improvements can have a remarkable impact on how we show up in the world, and it’s not easy. Yet, we can find comfort in knowing that we will find out what works best for us. We can trust in the process and know that we have the tools and supports available to navigate our lives and reach our truest potential. In an episode of In Time , singer-songwriter Peter Katz captured the idea that we are in the driver’s seat of our own growth when he said, “At any moment we can choose, and we can find ourselves on a new path.”
On a final note, I wholeheartedly believe that we can all show ourselves a little more compassion and grace on our journeys. Instead of drowning in all the things you are told you should be doing and could be doing, my invitation is for you to pause and reflect. Take inventory of all the things you are already doing right.

God is beginning to open my eyes to what it means to be a 24/7 disciple of Christ Jesus. One thing that strengthens me is …
When someone completes the initial three phases of The Ultimate Journey, it doesn’t mean that they have finished their journey or have somehow “arrived” at their destination. In fact, just the opposite is true. If someone really understands The Ultimate Journey , they recognize that it is a life-long journey – an abiding, ongoing way of living with the Holy Spirit and your brothers and sisters in Christ.
During Phase 3 you learned that you are only one growing season away from a new harvest. That is a very powerful truth that can either work for you or against you. If you are not happy with your current results, you simply need to begin planting new seeds that will enable you to reap your desired harvest. However, just because you have been reaping a good harvest doesn’t mean you will continue to do so unless you continue to sow good seeds.
Going through The Ultimate Journey gave you some valuable tools to help you experience God beyond head knowledge and into the reality of your everyday life. So how is it going?
It’s easy to lose focus and fall back into old thinking patterns. That’s why scripture tells us to “take every thought captive.” Remember, what you think about all day long and the way you think about it, determines who you will eventually become. That’s why we want to make you aware of some wonderful opportunities to help you maintain or regain your focus. Some options are:
1. Start using The Ultimate Journal
One of the best ways to make The Ultimate Journey principles a part of your everyday life is to use The Ultimate Journal. The Ultimate Journal – Living It On is a guidebook to help you navigate your next leg of The Ultimate Journey with Christ. This 11-week book can be used for your personal journey, or along with the Leaders Guide provided in the back of each book, is an excellent tool for small groups that want to continue walking out their journey together. Click here to order your copy of The Ultimate Journal – Living it on.
2. Attend a Phase 1, 2 or 3 Turbo
Turbos take you through all of the material for a particular phase in a 2 or 3 day setting. The turbos are taught by experienced The Ultimate Journey leaders that will give you a comprehensive review of the material and also help you apply it on a deeper level in your life. Turbo Schedule
3. Begin a self-study program using The Ultimate Journey teaching DVDs.
By purchasing a set of the teaching DVDs, you can go back through each phase as often as you like. There is a teaching DVD for each lesson of each phase. These teaching DVDs do an excellent job of emphasizing the key points for each week in a very engaging and practical way. Your self-study review can be as simple as just watching each approximately 30-minute DVD, or you can expand your study by rereading the corresponding chapter and doing the homework.
4. Lead a weekly group through one of the three phases
Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a teacher, facilitating is such an incredible way to learn something at a deeper level. With our Teaching DVDs, you can facilitate a group simply by providing a safe place for others to watch the DVDs and discuss what they got out of the reading for each lesson.
5. Join a local or online alumni group
Join or begin a local alumni group. This group can be designed to meet the needs of the specific participants. Some options would be for each participant to share from their personal life using The Ultimate Journal, or review a particular phase or sections from The Ultimate Journey books.
6. Read materials submitted by The Ultimate Journey family
The Resources section of the website is full of poems, songs, fairy tales, and letters written by The Ultimate Journey family. We have no doubt that they will bless and inspire you as they have us.

How can one overcome addiction?
When you're in the grips of addiction, it is easy to feel like there's no way out. It is often said that the only places substance abuse can lead you is jail, institutions , or the grave. Thankfully, there is much to be done to climb out of the hole of addiction, and although the road is long, it is doable.
Admit you have an addiction
The first step, even half of the battle, according to some, is admitting to yourself that you have a problem with substance abuse that has grown out of your control. Without this awareness, nothing else can be done to help you on your road to recovery.

Even once you have admitted to yourself that you have a problem, it can be hard to come to terms with. These are usually the moments when your addiction feels overwhelming, and like you are powerless to overcome it. Working through these emotions is key, and once you are able to accept that you have succumbed to addiction and strayed off of your intended path, recovery can begin.
Acknowledge your addiction with a loved one
It is essential to not only admit your addiction to yourself, but to someone you trust as well, be it a friend or a family member. Chances are they've already noticed signs of substance abuse in your behavior, and will be relieved to hear that you've become aware of it and are ready to make some changes.

Seek professional support
The journey through recovery is, above all else, an inward journey, but that doesn't mean you have to walk it alone. Especially in the early days of recovery, while nasty withdrawal symptoms run their course, it is important to seek the help of professionals. They will help you decide whether residential rehab might be necessary to keep you safe through your initial withdrawals, or if partial hospitalization or simply weekly therapy is sufficient.
Join a support group
There is an abundance of support to be found outside of clinics and rehabilitation centers as well. It is almost universally recommended that recovering addicts attend meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. These groups are organized by and for fellow addicts to share their experiences, worries, and support, with and for one another. Anonymous meetings, for many people, can be the most organic and therapeutic approach to recovery.

The 12-step program
Anonymous groups also work and teach what is called the 12-step program. The 12 steps are strategically laid out in a manner that helps people in recovery work through the long-term, big-picture process of healing. The steps include making amends, learning to love yourself, and recognizing all of the ways in which addiction has affected your life.
Get a sponsor
Another important aspect of Anonymous meetings is getting yourself a sponsor. A sponsor is someone who has been in recovery for a long time, is stable in their life, and agrees by their own free will to be a phone call away whenever you feel the urge to use. Being able to call or meet up with your sponsor when you would otherwise use or relapse has been the difference between life and death for countless addicts around the world.

Identify your triggers
Being in recovery doesn't mean you never have to go out in the real world again. And unfortunately, especially if your substance of choice is something socially accepted, like alcohol, triggers can appear all over the place. It's important to identify your triggers, avoid them if you can, and if you can't, pay extra close attention to yourself and be ready to call your sponsor if you need to. For example, it's probably best to stay away from bars, clubs, and any other locations or sensations that you associate with your past abuse.
Change your environment
Most therapists and addiction experts recommend you change three core things in your life to help ensure you don't fall back into old habits. The first is your environment. Usually, the years we spent in the grips of addiction are spent in the same homes, the same parking lots, the same bars, the same towns, etc. It's important to change your surroundings so that you can free yourself of constant reminders of your old way of life.

Change your company
The second core aspect is to change the company you keep. This one can be difficult, as it can feel like abandoning friends, but more often than not the people you are used to surrounding yourself with are the people you fell into addiction with. It's not that it's necessarily anyone's fault, but it is essential that you not put yourself in situations where you might be enabled to fall back on your old habits.
Change your routine
The third core aspect may be the most difficult, but in some ways will also come the most natural. When your days aren't centered around tracking down your next fix, you'll be forced to find other ways to fill up your time. It's important, however, that you fight any despondency you might feel and not spend your days in bed. Forming a new lifestyle, and staying active both physically and mentally, is essential to recovery.

Something that can be a huge help in recovery is taking up exercising. Exercise is the only activity clinically and neurologically proven to fight depression, and it is almost guaranteed that depression has played a part in your journey with substance abuse and recovery.
Discover, or rediscover, your hobbies
It is common, when engulfed in the blurry purgatory of addiction, to forget the things that used to interest you and make you happy. Drugs and alcohol have a way of replacing all of that. In recovery, it is immensely important that you rediscover, or maybe discover for the first time, the things in life that you are passionate about and the activities that make you happy.

Don't be disheartened by relapse
It would be naïve to say that the road to recovery was smooth and only went in one direction. Relapse isn't inevitable, but it is common, and it is important not to be discouraged if you fall off the wagon. In recovery, things are taken one day at a time, so even if today you fall off, you will have the chance to get back on the right path tomorrow.
Remember that any progress is progress
If you relapse, it's natural to think that you've regressed back to square one, but that is never the case. All of the progress you've made, all of the lessons you've learned, and all of the strength you have gained is still there with you. A lapse in judgment, a moment of weakness, doesn't take any of that away from you.

Take a moral inventory of your life
Something taught in 12-step programs and in clinical therapy alike is the importance of taking a "moral inventory" of your life. What have you done in your life that you're proud of? What makes you feel ashamed? Addressing and writing all of these things down helps rationalize and demystify the long, confusing journey you've been on up to this point.
Make amends with yourself
Once your moral inventory is complete, the next step is to forgive yourself for everything on that list that you're not proud of or that you regret. This may be difficult, as we can all do awful things while buried beneath the darkness of addiction, but recovery is impossible if you don't learn to love and accept yourself, and recognize that you are on a path to becoming a better person than you were.

Make amends with those you might have hurt
But, of course, it's rare that you're the only person you need to make amends with. Surely many events in your moral inventory involve other people, and it's important to reach out to them and apologize and explain your situation from a genuine place in your heart. If, of course, they're willing to accept it. Some people might not be ready for or willing to accept an apology, and that is a possibility you must accept as well. This is why making amends with yourself comes before making amends with others.
Embrace and enjoy the freedom of sobriety
Recovery is a lifelong journey, but it does get easier. Eventually, sobriety will start feeling less like a punishment and more like a blessing. Waking up feeling fresh, experiencing the world through clear eyes and a clear mind, etc., these are aspects of true freedom that never would have been possible had you not sought recovery.

Practice presentness
But, of course, no amount of good experiences and progress can erase your past. You may have moments where it all comes rushing back, not only the bad memories, but the desires, too. In times like these, it is imperative that you are able to stay in the present, take a deep breath, and remember just how far you've come.
Don't let your past hold you back
It's easy to make recovery your whole identity, and while your past has undoubtedly had a hand in making you the person you are today, it doesn't restrict the person you can be tomorrow.

Form goals for the future
Of course, the main goal of overcoming drug addiction, besides avoiding death, institutions, or jail, is to get on with your life. It may be the case that you were stuck in addiction for so long that you may not know what exactly it is you want to "get on" with. Don't allow that to get you down. You have the rest of your new life ahead of you, and you can lead it in whatever direction you choose.
Keep open communication with your family and loved ones
As we know, recovery is a lifelong journey, and like any journey, it has its ups and downs, its highs and lows. If you start feeling low or vulnerable, or the urge to use rears its ugly head, remember your system of support that has been there since the beginning. It doesn't matter if it's been 15 years since your last craving—speak with those you trust when you're feeling down so they can remind you of how strong you really are and how far you've come.

"Keep comin' back"
A common mantra repeated within the walls of Anonymous meetings is calls to "keep comin' back." While you may not want to go to daily Anonymous meetings for your whole life, it's important that you remember they're there for you whenever you need them, whether that be next week, next year, or a decade from now.
Share your experiences with others who might need help
As you continue down your path of recovery, many epiphanies and moments of clarity will light your way. Eventually, especially in support groups, you might find someone who is going through the same initial, terrifying steps of sobriety that you too went through. It can be mutually beneficial to sit with people who have just started their journey, share your wisdom, and remind them and yourself that no one is alone in this.

Take it one day at a time
"One day at a time." This phrase is the foundation of recovery. Looking forward, towards the rest of your life, thinking about the prospect of never making another mistake in your life is overwhelming and unfair to yourself. Every single person who has led a fulfilling life of sobriety after addiction has done it the exact same way: one day at a time.

Archbishop Gallagher makes 6-day visit to Vietnam
By Vatican News
On April 9, the Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, began his journey to Vietnam, where he will stay until Sunday, April 14.
The X account of the Secretariat of State, @TerzaLoggia, released his schedule as the English-born Archbishop departed.
The schedule includes meetings with Foreign Affairs Minister Bui Thanh Son and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chính.
He will also hold diplomatic encounters at the Ministry of the Interior and preside at a Eucharistic celebration at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hanoi.
Archbishop Gallagher’s programme includes a visit to the ecclesiastical province of Hue to meet with Major Seminary students and preside over a Mass at Hue's "Phu Cam" cathedral.
Announcment of the journey
Archbishop Gallagher himself mentioned his visit to Vietnam on January 18, following an audience that Pope Francis held with representatives from the Communist Party of Vietnam at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.
Speaking after an event, the Archbishop expressing his appreciation for the meeting and his hopes that the Vietnamese Catholic community will benefit from this advancement in bilateral relations, alongside other significant diplomatic achievements.
In December, the Holy See and Vietnam reached an agreement to appoint a resident pontifical representative in Vietnam, the Apostolic Nuncio to Singapore, Polish-born Archbishop Marek Zalewski.
The agreement was signed in July 2023, during President Vo Van Thuong's visit to the Vatican, based on the tenth session of the Vietnam-Holy See Joint Working Group, which took place on March 31, 2023, in Rome.
Archbishop Gallagher also hinted at a possible visit to the country by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin within the year and voiced optimism about a potential future visit by Pope Francis.
He highlighted Vietnam's importance and its status as an "economic miracle in many respects."
Pope Francis' letter to the Vietnamese Church
Vietnam and the Holy See broke diplomatic relations in 1975, but positive developments began to occur after 1990.
In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed a non-resident pontifical representative, and in 2023, the two parties established a statute for a resident representative.
Pope Francis also sent a letter to the Church in Vietnam in September 2023, urging Catholic faithful to live as "good Christians and good citizens."
He called on them to bear witness to God's love "without distinction of religion, race, or culture" and stressed the importance of "recognizing convergences and respecting differences."
This approach, noted the Pope, embodies Catholics' identity as good Christians and citizens by animating their Church and spreading the Gospel in daily life.
Where there are “conditions favourable to the exercise of religious freedom,” he said, the witness of Catholics can help promote dialogue and hope for Vietnam.

Here's how much money I made as a software engineer at Meta, Apple, and Oracle
- Sandeep Rao is a software engineer who has worked at Meta, Apple, and Oracle.
- When he first started his career as a new graduate, his compensation was only $15,000.
- He explains how, thanks to high performance and negotiation skills, he now makes nearly $700,000.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sandeep Rao, a 32-year-old software engineer based in San Jose, California. Business Insider has verified his income with documentation. This essay has been edited for length and clarity.
My salary journey in Big Tech has seen my total compensation — which includes base salary, bonuses, and stocks — increase from $15,000 in 2012 to $685,000 in 2024.
I'm a staff software engineer and have worked at three different tech companies, moving from Oracle to Apple to Meta. Over my career, I've led the development of successful software apps and features from scratch that are used every day by millions of people across the world.
While I have made my career moves primarily based on which areas of software engineering I'd get to work on, compensation is also important to me, so I've been strategic and negotiated for higher salaries with each move.
Tech companies use tools like additional equity to retain high-performing employees. In my experience, if you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.
I took a low-paying job to get my foot in the door
While I got my undergraduate degree in electrical engineering , I realized midway through college that software engineering was my passion and pivoted to pursue a career in software instead.
My first job was as a software developer at Oracle in India. While Oracle isn't generally low-paying in the tech industry, my salary of 850,000 rupees, or $15,000, was low compared to what new grads were making at that time in competing Big Tech companies like Microsoft or Amazon because it was a "take it or leave it" new grad offer.
The work was unappealing to me because it didn't align with my career interests — I didn't want to continue building expertise in that specific area of software engineering — but I took it to get my foot in the door of a Big Tech company and build credibility.
I knew I eventually wanted to end up where all the action is — Silicon Valley . I worked at Oracle from 2012 to 2014, and during this time, I applied to graduate schools in the US because I felt a formal computer science degree would help me compete with the talented people in the Valley.
I got accepted into a graduate program in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I left behind my family and friends in India and moved to the US with nothing but a suitcase and $65,000 in student debt.
Grad school was hard, but the doors it opened for me made the struggle worth it.
I was ecstatic to get a job at Apple
I finished grad school and got a job as a software engineer at Apple in Cupertino, California, where my base salary was $115,000.
I was ecstatic to work at one of the best companies in the world and felt my dreams were coming true. But I realized I wanted to work on more direct user-facing applications rather than on technology that ran under the hood.
Initially, I considered looking for new opportunities within Apple, but between high taxes, the high cost of living, and my student loans, I felt more compelled to switch companies, given that I'd likely receive a significant salary bump .
I had gotten a very small cost-of-living raise on my base salary at Apple, but it wasn't significant; not getting a bigger raise wasn't a big motivator in my decision to change companies, but it certainly made my choice easier.
My negotiation skills helped me get a 10% salary increase
At the end of 2017, I moved to Meta (then Facebook) in Menlo Park, California. I wanted to experience the culture of younger internet-based companies whose products are used by billions of people.
When I received my offer, I did my research to get a clear understanding of what my market value was and what salary I wanted to land on. I also learned what parts of my total compensation are negotiable, such as stocks and the sign-on bonus, and what is non-negotiable, like base salary and annual bonuses.
I was prepared to negotiate and walked away with an offer of $140,000, which was 10% more than their original offer.
In 2021, I landed a large-scale project at Meta that added a lot of value to the Messenger app and worked with several cross-functional teams across engineering, design, data science, and legal.
My accomplishments, such as this one, and high performance at work got me the promotions, visibility, and leverage to negotiate for higher pay and a successful salary journey.
Every year between 2018 to 2023, my base salary increased — as did my total compensation — through a combination of performance-based yearly stock refreshers, additional boosts from promotions, and stock market appreciation.
Related stories
Compensation in a tech career usually gets more and more equity-heavy than salary-heavy, so base salaries don't increase as quickly as equity, but my salary and total annual compensation steadily rose:
2012-2014: $15,000 total compensation
Grad School
2014-2016: $0 total compensation
Student loan debt: $65,000
2016: $130,000 total compensation
2017: $165,000 total compensation
2018: $230,000 total compensation
2019: $240,000 total compensation
2020: $350,000 total compensation (promotion)
2021: $510,000 total compensation
2022: $375,000 total compensation (promotion, but total compensation dropped due to stock price drop)
2023: $545,000 total compensation
In 2024, I'm projected to make $685,000 through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock.
Five strategies for increasing my compensation package
Over the years, I learned five salary strategies that helped me grow my salary and overall compensation:
1. Always do your homework about market rates for your role, level, and location — especially when you switch jobs.
Switching jobs is a good way to increase your income.
Even if money may not be the primary motivator for a job switch, I always make sure to be conscious and strategic about my compensation by doing salary research to avoid leaving any money on the table.
When I started doing salary research during my switch to Meta, I found out my market value was much higher than what I was making at Apple at that time. This helped me start my negotiations with Meta at the market rate rather than the salary I was making.
I used Levels.fyi , Blind , and Glassdoor to find salary information and clearly understand my market value. Keep yourself updated on these benchmarks even if you don't plan on a job change anytime soon, so you know you're on par with the market, and any salary difference is offset by other factors such as better work-life balance.
2. Never let your bad salary "baggage" carry over to your new job.
If your salary isn't up to market standards right now, don't let it affect your pay at the next job. Otherwise, it'll lead to a cycle where you'll be underpaid for the rest of your career.
Employers and recruiters could use your salary history to give you only a modest raise, while your actual market value could easily be double or triple your most recent salary.
In California, labor laws make it illegal for employers to ask you about your current salary and salary history. You're also allowed to ask potential employers for the pay range for the position you're applying for.
If your state has similar protections, just being aware of this law can help you make any corrections to your pay during negotiations. This helped me start offer negotiations from my market value instead of my current pay.
3. Sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith to make that 10x impact on your career.
That could involve switching from a non-tech job to a tech job or taking a short-term hit for long-term gain. For example, I picked Oracle for my first job despite the low pay and unappealing work so I could build credibility to get into a Tier 1 grad school.
I also took a loan of about $65,000 to pay for Carnegie Mellon, even though I could have chosen to go to a cheaper public university.
Deciding to work at Oracle and attend Carnegie Mellon cost me a few years and a lot of debt, but doing so opened doors unlike anything else, and I haven't looked back ever since.
4. Negotiate to keep your base salary from falling behind
It's inevitable for your salary to fall behind as you stay longer at a company, especially in tech due to restricted stock unit (RSU) "cliffs."
Most RSU packages offered to new employees in the tech industry have a two- to four-year vesting period. Unless the employer offers a significant pay bump along the way, total compensation usually takes a drop after this vesting period. Many companies also offer annual performance-based stock refreshers to lower this salary gap, but they're usually not as large as the initial grant.
If you love working at your company and feel forced to move just to get a raise, you can ask your senior leadership to make a "correction." After all, it's much more expensive and time-consuming for employers to hire new people than to retain good employees.
Most Big Tech companies have employee retention programs like additional or discretionary equity. Additional equity programs are mainly used to retain high-performing employees, so they're usually highly selective.
This is how I was able to keep my compensation at or above market level despite spending six years at Meta. When I was reaching the end of my vesting period in my fourth year, I had a conversation with my senior leadership to see if there was any room for a pay correction so I could go back to focusing on my work 100% without worrying about salary.
Being prepared with my predicted compensation drop and market data greatly helped me build a cogent narrative going in. If you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.
5. Don't assume people will reward your work or anticipate your needs — ask.
Always ask for what you want , whether it's a raise or that interesting project that just came in. The worst that will happen is you'll get a "no." If you don't ask, nobody will know, or even worse, people may assume that you're happy with what you have and move on.
I used this strategy when I heard of a new company initiative and asked to be a founding engineer because I was looking to create more impact in my role. Despite the high risk and ambiguity involved, I successfully delivered on the projects, which eventually led to a promotion. None of this would've been possible if I hadn't asked.
At the end of the day, you're your biggest advocate when it comes to your salary and career journey. There's no substitute for hard work, but being strategic about how you achieve your goals can go a long way. Sometimes, you have to take big risks and step out of your comfort zone to get that high-paying dream job.

'A Journey' Review: Netflix's Filipino film leaves you teary-eyed with profound emotions
MANILA, PHILIPPINES: 'A Journey', now streaming on Netflix , takes viewers on a poignant two-hour exploration of profound emotions.
It revolves around a young woman, Shane, whose cancer returns for the second time and she chooses to opt out of undergoing chemotherapy again.
Instead, she convinces her husband, Bryan, to help her check off the adventures on her bucket list. Accompanied by their close friend, Kristoff, the trio sets off on an unforgettable adventure to Tasmania.
Netflix's 'A Journey' is an emotional one
The film delivers a deeply emotional experience, evoking tears as it portrays Shane and Bryan's heartfelt journey through the diagnosis of the deadly disease.
Despite the expected emotional moments, the film also celebrates love and enduring friendships.
It's central philosophy- "survival is not the same as living" is beautiful portrayed, emphasizing the idea that one never knows what may happen tomorrow.
There have been plenty of films made in the past with similar themes, but the portrayal of deep, sentimental human emotions can never become worn out in cinema. In fact, they are the heart of cinema, depicted across all genres.
'A Journey' doesn't bore you with monotony
The plot of the film is quite familiar and has been depicted in several films across continents.
Fortunately, RC Delos Reyes does a brilliant job of not lingering on emotional moments but maintains a steady pace, ensuring the audience remains engaged and invested in the story.
The close, fun relationship shared between the trio provides a heartfelt relief from the heavily loaded emotions of pain and grief.
Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia and Kaye Abad share a wholesome chemistry and are quite convincing in their respective parts.
'A Journey' makes a worthwhile watch for a relaxed weekend, alone or with loved ones. Just be prepared with tissues handy for this touching ride.

A Journey (2024) ‘Netflix’ Movie Review: Wears Its Heart and Influences on Its Sleeve
Netflix’s Filipino drama “A Journey” (2024), directed by RC Delos Reyes, is a pathos-filled sentimental tearjerker with a familiar premise. The age-old “Terminal illness upping life’s value” trope sets the film on its ‘journey’ to explore friendship, love, and, of course, death. The lack of novelty prompts a lack of appeal, initially. However, to its credit, “A Journey” includes a few more turns that help the film reach its tender finishing line with significant brevity and poignancy. Even with cynicism, one cannot help but appreciate the feeling “A Journey” tries to evoke when the credit starts to roll.
Shane (Kaye Abad) and Bryan (Paolo Contis) are happily married. So, when Shane visits her oncologist, we can feel ourselves bracing for the big bad news. Shane’s cancer has returned. The news devastates the couple. The couple has a friend from their childhood, the perennial third-wheel Kristoff (Patrick Garcia). Kristoff is a carefree bachelor and an actor with a significant fan following. Shane, Bryan, and Kristoff have been friends since childhood. Understandably, the cancer news depresses Kristoff as well. After taking a moment to deal with the curveball, Shane takes a literal ‘life-changing’ decision. She decides not to take treatment.
The film’s eponymous ‘journey’ refers to a stubborn Shane’s final hurrah. Shane, who does not want to spend her remaining days fighting an arduous and losing battle, decides to go on a journey to fulfill some of her wishes. She pulls out the old ‘magic list,’ where she mentioned things like “Seeing Penguins.” Now, if you are aware of the term “Bucket List,” coined by screenwriter Justin Zackman, or you have seen the movie by the same name, written by Zackman and featuring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, you know the deal. It is a list of things to do before one kicks the bucket, so to speak. Things to do before we die.
Bryan and Kristoff plan Shane’s subsequent ‘bucket list’ journey. So, the film becomes a travelogue featuring some of the scenic landscapes of the Philippines and Australia. This is the part where one becomes aware of the serious lack of novelty, with the obvious similarities with films of such ilk, like “The Bucket List.” Shane, Bryan, and Kristoff experience both new and old things, like seeing the Tasmanian Devil and visiting their old school. Their journey is filled with reconnecting with lost relationships and welcoming new things while churning out standard “Seize the day” moments and dialogues.
Just when it seemed that “A Journey,” although well-intended, is just about a knock-off of “The Bucket List,” it changes for the better. Without delving into a spoiler-filled plot reveal, I can say that it always felt like the film needed just about anything different to set itself apart a little. And thankfully, it does, with another different trope. With about only one-fourth of its duration remaining, “A Journey” takes some bold decisions and makes its entire story mean something else. It gives death the fearful respect it deserves. It underlines the finality of death much more than I thought it would do when Shane’s journey to cross things off her list began.
For this alone, “A Journey” should deserve some praise. Thanks to the performances of the three main cast members, the film always has a grip on the emotional quotient. Kaye Abad and Paolo Contis have had the perfect chemistry of a couple who have been together for thirty-odd years. Abad’s Shane is the driving force of the film and she excelled there. Contis, equally, did not hold back. Patrick Garcia’s Kristoff is charming, playful, and poignant. Kristoff’s transformation is all the more important when you think about how the story ends. The eponymous journey changes him for the better, career-wise and lifestyle-wise.
Director RC Delos Reyes starts with an all too familiar premise and sticks with the usual storyline for quite a long time. “A Journey” changes course late, but thankfully not too late. Too often, films and stories like this fall into the abyss of off-handedly thought-out life affirmation cliches. And despite significantly running the risk of that, “A Journey” veers away and becomes something else. It becomes a story of genuine love, undying friendship, and the bittersweet phenomenon of remembrance.
