The men's WorldTour racing season resumes February 19 at the 2024 UAE Tour , with the first two events of the top tier held in Australia last month, Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

The sixth edition of the UAE Tour runs for seven days, concluding on February 27 with the climb of Jebel Hafeet, which has been the grand finale of the seven-day stage race on multiple occasions. The race brings together top GC riders and sprinters around the peloton this year with 16 WorldTour squads and four ProTeams on the start in Abu Dhabi.

Cyclingnews  will bring you full coverage, reports, results, news, interviews and analysis of the 2024 UAE Tour. Read on to find out how to watch the race via live stream, no matter your location, with  ExpressVPN .

A fierce GC battle is expected as the riders take on the traditional flat stages and two uphill finales at Jebel Jais and Jebel Hafeet. An individual time trial returns this year with a 12.1km course with several technical sections at the outdoor recreational centre on Al Hudayriyat island.

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) returns with an eye on the GC, as he comes off a GC win at Tour of Oman. Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) makes his debut at the UAE Tour, arriving fresh from a victory at Vuelta a Murcia. Yates, who finished third last year, won the UAE Tour in 2020 and was second in 2021 and 2022.

Rivals at this year's race for the overall include Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), Jan Hirt (Soudal-QuickStep) and Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).

There is always a strong field for the sprints, led by Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who already has his first win of the season from Tour Colombia. There are three flat finishes in Dubai Harbour, Umm Al Quwain and Abu Dhabi breakwater, with the latter offering the same finish location from the 2022 race where Cavendish took the victory.

- Matt Winston (Team DSM coach): "We're looking forward to tackling our first WorldTour level race of the year at the UAE Tour. The seven stages offer a variety of terrain for us to contend with, including several sprint opportunities, a time trial and two mountain top finishes on stage four and seven; although like a lot of races in the region, the wind can also be a factor in the more exposed areas. We go with a team prepared for the lead outs in the sprints and we also have some really solid options for the two stages with a mountain top finish, where we will chase day results and take each stage as it comes."

Fortunately I was able to catch Lutsenko and beat him in the sprint. I am very happy with this victory, my first victory of the season. It has been two years since my last win. It feels good to show that I have a good level. This is also very nice for the team. Hopefully this is the beginning of many victories."

Luckily my body was ready for this effort today. It’s a fantastic result for me and for the team. It was a bit strange to ride in the desert and it’s my first time at the UAE Tour. It’s hard to ride at 55 or 56km/h but I’m really happy today."

I am really excited, and I have been training a lot for it in the last weeks. I have studied the stages but of course only once we are in the race, we will know how to approach each single day. There will not be a selected leader for this race for our Team, for this reason it will be important to see as a team how the first half of the tour will go and then we can adjust our strategy for the second half in order to achieve the best result for our team."

- Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) following Stage 4: "I started my sprint from the 7th position which was maybe a little bit too far behind, that's why I was blocked in in the end. I can still be happy with my form, I'm now looking forward to more sprint finishes here at the UAE Tour."

- Stage 4 winner Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) following the stage: "This is a very good win. I am very pleased.  I beat the world’s best sprinters today. This is a really sweet victory. In the first stage I probably had the fastest sprint of all, but I was not well positioned. That meant I had to come from too far. Today it was a totally different sprint. The boys did a perfect lead-out. It was a hectic final, but everyone really had his share in my stage win. They all went flat-out. We decided to move up to the front in the last three kilometres because of the strong headwind. Christoph (Pfingsten) has the eye to put me in the best position for the sprint. Then I perfectly timed my sprint. I am happy that I was able to finish off the team’s work."

- Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) won Stage 3 and took over the race lead.

- Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) won Stage 2 and is new overall leader.

- Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) following Stage 2: "Today was a really tough day in the saddle. I had some problems with the heat and didn’t feel very well but I still tried to go for a good result. Unfortunately, the pace in the final was too fast for me that’s why I couldn't keep up with the front group on the long climb ten kilometres before the finish line. When I got dropped, I took it a bit easier to save energy for the upcoming stages. I would like to thank my teammates for supporting me, I’ll do my best to get back on the winning track again."

- Pascal Ackermann (Bora-HANSGROHE) won Stage 1 and is first leader in the general classification.

- Deceuninck-Quickstep roster for the 2020 UAE Tour:

Shane Archbold (NZL) Sam Bennett (IRL) Mattia Cattaneo (ITA) James Knox (GBR) Michael Mørkøv (DEN) Pieter Serry (BEL) Stijn Steels (BEL) Sports Directors: Klaas Lodewyck (BEL) Geert Van Bondt (BEL)

- Geert Van Bondt (Deceuninck-Quickstep directeur sportif): "The number one goal is to win a stage and in Sam we have one of the favourites. He showed in Australia that he is in shape and we are really looking forward to the bunch gallops and our colourful lead-out train featuring Shane and Michael, while at the same time being aware it won’t be easy, as many top sprinters are at the start.  James has had a good start to the season in Valencia and we all remember his solid and impressive ride that helped him crack the top 10 overall last year at the UAE Tour, which would be nice if it were to happen again. The Jebel Hafeet climb suits him, but we’re not putting any pressure, we’ll just see how it goes. Mattia can also do a good race, while Pieter and Stijn will be there to help the team control the race."

- Andrey Amador, who joined Team INEOS on a 3-year deal, will make his debut with the team at the UAE Tour.  "Who wouldn’t be excited to sign with Team INEOS? I’m very happy to be part of this great Team. I have spent all of my sporting career with Movistar and I owe them a lot – but I felt now is the right time in my career to seek some new motivations. This is a new challenge and I will give everything I have for this Team.  Everyone can see there is a strong unit at this Team – there is an impressive bunch of riders and staff.  I’m excited to be part of this group, joining alongside Richard Carapaz. I’m happy we can continue to ride together after what were able to do with Movistar at the Giro d’Italia."

The WorldTour season officially kicks off this coming week at the UAE Tour.

This year the UAE Tour again takes the pro peloton on a journey through all seven Emirates as it makes its way from the Al Dhafra Castle in Abu Dhabi north to Jebel Jais, back through Dubai, and finally back to the Yas Mall outside Abu Dhabi. The race kicks off Sunday, February 21, and finishes on Saturday, February 27.

The seven-stage race includes an individual time trial on stage two, plus summit finishes at Jebel Hafeet and Jebel Jais, the country’s highest mountain. Five of the stages are pan-flat, while stages three and five boast hills and mountains.

The lineup this year is impressive, with defending champion Adam Yates making his debut with Ineos Grenadiers. Yates faces reigning Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Chris Froome (Israel Start-Up Nation), Vincenzo Nibali (Trek-Segafredo), Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), and Giro d’Italia revelation João Almeida (Deceuninck-Quick-Step). The lineup of sprinters is even more impressive, with Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal), and Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) on the list, alongside top rouleurs Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers).

How to watch UAE Tour: live stream UCI World Tour stage race from anywhere

T he 2024 UAE Tour is the longest of the three stage races held in the deserts of the Middle East, and the only one to hold UCI World Tour status. It consequently attracts the strongest field, which this year is packed with world class sprinters and also a few decent climbers.

Read on and we'll show you how to watch a 2024 UAE Tour live stream from anywhere with a VPN .

The second World Tour stage race of 2024 kicks off in the United Arab Emirates, and while there are a couple decent climbs on the route, it’s the sprinters who have turned up in force to battle it out on the desert roads. Nearly all the big name fast men are down to start from Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla), Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) to Elia Viviani (INEOS Grenadiers) and the one and only Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan).

The race starts with a straightforward sprint stage but then the following day the overall classification will get a shake up with a 12km individual time trial. Following this, the first of the two mountain stages comes on stage three with the punishing finish up to Jebel Jais, by which time we will have a good idea who the real contenders are. The sprinters will then be back in action for stages 4, 5 and 6 with three opportunities to flex their giant legs before the finale, stage 7 up the now iconic climb of Jebel Hafeet.

The peloton will no doubt be looking forward to seven days of hard racing in perfect weather before they head to the harsher conditions of northern Europe and the spring classics. Keep reading for how to watch UAE Tour live streams from anywhere.

Watch a UAE Tour live stream from abroad

It's only natural that you might want to watch a 2024 UAE Tour live stream from your home country, but what if you're not there when the race is on?

Look no further than a VPN, or virtual private network. A VPN makes it look as if you're surfing the web from your home country, rather than the one you're in. That means you can access the streaming services you already pay for, from anywhere on planet Earth. Or anywhere that has an internet connection, at least.

They're totally legal, inexpensive and easy to use. We've tested lots of the best VPN services and our favorite right now is ExpressVPN . It's fast, works on loads of devices and even offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Using a VPN is incredibly simple.

1. Install the VPN of your choice . As we've said, ExpressVPN is our favorite.

2. Choose the location you wish to connect to in the VPN app. For instance if you're in the U.S. and want to view an Australian service, you'd select Australia from the list.

3. Sit back and enjoy the action. Head to Discovery+, for example, and enjoy the live stream.

Safety, speed and simplicity combine to make ExpressVPN our favorite VPN service. It's also compatible with loads of devices and there's a 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to try it out. View Deal

Who is the favorite?

Who is favorite to win the 2024 uae tour.

With neither last year’s winner Remco Evenepoel nor second placed Luke Plapp riding, the hot favourite for the GC this year will be the third placed rider from 2023, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates). Fresh from his victory in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, Brandon McNulty (also UAE Team Emirates) will be riding to back up his teammate, and they will need strength in numbers if they are to fend off the likes of Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Roman Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), and young Belgian sensation Ilan van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step).

Tadej Pogačar has made a sufficient enough recovery from Covid to defend his title at the first race of the 2022 UCI World Tour, where there's always extra pressure on the Slovenian because of the event's close ties with his team. Join us for a spin as we explain how to get a 2022 UAE Tour live stream and watch UCI WorldTour cycling online from anywhere.

Dates: February 20-26

His main competition for the red jersey is likely to come from Adam Yates, who's pushed Pogačar to his limits at the UAE Tour in each of the past two years, making for some brilliantly entertaining racing. Yates beat Pogačar to the GC in 2020, but the Slovenian got his own back last year.

Tom Dumoulin, meanwhile, is racing the UAE Tour for the first time since the inaugural edition of the event in 2019, where he shone in the mountain stage but struggled to hit the same heights elsewhere.

This year's route features two mountain stages, a 9km ITT and four sprint stages, as the riders navigate a mind-boggling mix of landscapes, including desert, mountains, and city.

La Vuelta Femenina 2024: Route, How to Watch, and Favorites

Demi Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma, and Gaia Realini will battle for the red jersey on the challenging eight-stage tour across Spain.

As of this Sunday, April 29, we’re officially in Grand Tour season, as the eight-stage Vuelta Femenina kicks off with a 16-kilometer team time trial in Valencia, Spain.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 7

Last year’s race covered just over 740 kilometers over the course of its seven stages. It was won by Movistar’s Annemiek van Vleuten , who, with the win, became the first woman to win all three of the major women’s stage races (the Vuelta, along with the Tour de France Femmes, and the Giro Donne). She beat SD Worx’s Demi Vollering but just nine seconds. Trek-Segafredo’s Gaia Realini rounded out the podium in third.

But van Vleuten retired after last season, meaning there’s no chance for a repeat winner. And given the variety of winners we’ve seen in the women’s peloton this spring, this race is truly up for grabs.

This year’s race adds a stage, making it eight in total. All of them stick exclusively to Spain’s northwest and northcentral regions.

It kicks off with what should be a blistering team time trial over 16 lake-flat kilometers. From there, the second stage will take riders from Buñol to Moncofa over 118 hilly kilometers, including just one Category 3 climb. As that climb comes 40 kilometers from the finish, expect a bunch sprint.

The third stage is a 131-kilometer medium mountain stage that will take riders from Lucena to Teruel and feature another Category 3 ascent. Stage four covers 142 kilometers from Molina de Aragón to Zaragoza and is mostly downhill from start to finish.

map

The 113 kilometers of stage 5 are where the peloton first gets into proper mountains, with a pair of category 2 climbs—one of which provides the day’s summit finish—on the menu. Stage 6 is the opposite of stage 4, taking riders on a daylong gradual uphill from Tarazona to Laguna Negra, ending with a category 1 summit finish that very well could determine the race’s overall winner.

Stage 7 could be the last chance for the sprinters to leave their mark. However, the final 500 meters of the day’s 126 kilometers ramp up to 10%, so look for a punchier rider to take the win there.

The Vuelta Feminina will end with an 89-kilometer ride from Distrito Telefónca to ValdesquíMadrid. The ride features a pair of category-1 climbs, the last of which leads to the race’s final finish line.

Complete information on each stage can be found here .

How to Watch

The Vuelta Feminina will be broadcast in the US via Peacock , which costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. In Canada, the race will be broadcast via FloSports , which costs $12.50 per month or $150 per year.

Live Stream Schedule - All times Eastern (EDT) 04/28 - Stage 1 Valencia > Valencia - 9:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. 04/29 - Stage 2 Buñol > Moncófar - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 04/30 - Stage 3 Lucena del Cid > Teruel - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/01 - Stage 4 Molina de Aragón > Zaragoza - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/02 - Stage 5 Huesca > Jaca - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/03 - Stage 6 Tarazona > Vinuesa - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/04 - Stage 7 San Esteban de Gormaz > Sigüenza - 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. 05/05 - Stage 8 Distrito Telefónica. Madrid > Valdesquí - 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.

Riders to Watch

While the final roster for the race is yet to be final, several confirmed names promise another competitive edition. Among the riders targeting the general classification are Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering of SD Worx-Protime, Gaia Realini of Lidl-Trek, who graced the podium last year, and the consistently impressive Kasia Niewiadoma of SD Worx-Protime. With the absence of retired defending champion Anemiek Van Vleuten and Vollering showing signs of wavering form this season, the battle for the coveted red jersey appears wide open.

Other riders to watch are the 2024 Tour of Flanders champion Elisa Longo Borghini of Lidl-Trek, Canyon//SRAM’s Ricarda Bauernfeind , and Mavi García of Liv Alula Jayco.

UAE Challenge: Three to Watch

Week eight of the Road to Mallorca is here, with Saadiyat Beach Golf Club returning as host of the UAE challenge for the second year running. Here are three players to keep an eye on…

Form Horse - Alexander Levy

GettyImages-2147942392

Alexander Levy enters the UAE Challenge in fine form. The Frenchman – a five-time winner on the DP World Tour – has finished in the top ten in each of his last three events on the Challenge Tour, and led for most of the final round in Al Ain last week before finishing one shot back in second place. The 33-year-old climbed to second place in the season-long Rankings with that result and will be hoping to go one better at Saadiyat this week.

Local Boy - Jonathan Selvaraj

GettyImages-2147894595

Jonathan Selvaraj is one of the leading amateurs in the UAE. The Emirati enters this week with experience of winning at Saadiyat Beach after capturing the Men’s Open Championship – which was a qualifier for the Emirates Golf Federation Order of Merit - at the course last year. That victory, combined with a pair of top five finishes on the amateur circuit already this season, sees Selvaraj enter the UAE Challenge with hopes for a strong performance.

The Outsider - Dominic Foos

Dominic Foos

Dominic Foos has played just two events on the Challenge Tour this season and currently lies 150th in the Road to Mallorca Rankings. However, the German – who resides in the UAE – will be eyeing up a good performance this week after turning in a pair of top 20 finishes in last year’s UAE Swing. He remains the youngest winner in the history of the Challenge Tour with a wire-to-wire victory in the GANT Open 2015 in his first professional season, and will be targeting a long-awaited return to the winner’s circle in Abu Dhabi.

Nicolai Kristensen is hoping to use past experience to continue his strong start to the year when he tees it up in the UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club this week, the second of back-to-back events in Abu Dhabi.

Cloud seeding probably didn't cause Dubai's floods. The UAE has been trying to control its weather for years, and the US does it too.

  • Cloud seeding involves spraying salts into incoming storm clouds to increase rainfall.
  • Photos show how the UAE, United States, and other countries have been seeding clouds for decades.
  • Historic floods in Dubai didn't come from cloud seeding, but humans' climate impacts are playing a role.

As the desert city of Dubai flooded on Monday, onlookers pointed the finger at the government's "cloud seeding" efforts.

The program sends planes into oncoming storm clouds to inject them with substances that can help make more rain. Could it be the culprit for two years' worth of rain falling on the United Arab Emirates city in just a day?

It's a tantalizing explanation. Trying to control the weather can sound tantamount to playing god. And if thousands of years of media and oral tradition tell us anything — from Prometheus to Frankenstein — playing god has bad consequences.

But the United Arab Emirates has been seeding clouds to encourage rainfall and battle drought for 20 years. Some US states have been doing it for even longer. These programs have found that the practice has a small effect on precipitation, increasing it by about 5 to 15%, though a UAE official told Reuters that it can be as high as 30% for them.

Many other countries, including China and Australia, have experimented with the technique.

Related stories

According to several scientists, cloud seeding isn't the driving force behind Dubai's historic floods .

How cloud seeding works

To "seed" a cloud, you have to spray it with microscopic particles of a salt such as silver iodide, calcium chloride, or potassium chloride.

In the UAE and many US states, planes do the job. In some places, like Utah, machines on the ground shoot the substance into air currents that can carry it into the clouds.

All these particles have a crystalline structure, similar to ice, which gives water droplets something to stick to. As the water converges, it forms an ice crystal and eventually falls as snow or rain.

This mimics the natural rain-making process that happens inside the cloud.

"Cloud seeding can't create clouds from nothing. It encourages water that is already in the sky to condense faster and drop water in certain places. So first, you need moisture. Without it, there'd be no clouds," Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer in climate science at the Imperial College London, and co-founder of the groundbreaking science collaboration World Weather Attribution , said in a statement to the Science Media Centre (SMC).

The real threat behind Dubai's floods

Many atmospheric scientists have dismissed the idea that cloud seeding was behind Dubai's floods. Experts told the SMC that the rains came from a rare thundercloud system, which was already forecast to bring heavy rainfall, and the effect of any cloud seeding would have been tiny.

"This is a distraction from the real story here — that due to our collective failure to phase out fossil fuels, we must prepare for unprecedented extremes, which will worsen until we reach 'net zero,'" John Marsham, an atmospheric scientist and Met Office Joint Chair at the University of Leeds, told the SMC.

Rising global temperatures are leading to heavier bouts of rainfall across the planet, even in places that are typically dry or even in the middle of a drought. This type of weather whiplash happens because of a fundamental fact of physics: Warmer air holds more water.

"Any possible effect of any cloud seeding in these circumstances would be tiny," Marsham added.

Indeed, the UAE isn't the only desert or drought-stricken region that's been devastated by heavy rainfall in recent years. Death Valley catastrophically and historically flooded in 2022, 2023, and this February.

A series of moisture-laden atmospheric rivers interrupted California's years-long drought last winter, killing at least 22 people, by the Los Angeles Times' count .

"If humans continue to burn oil, gas, and coal, the climate will continue to warm, rainfall will continue to get heavier, and people will continue to lose their lives in floods," Otto said.
