The sailing embarks in Portland, Oregon , on the Pacific Coast before traveling east to the Atlantic shore along four major rivers that highlight some of the country's most stunning coastlines. Upon arrival in New York Harbor, guests will have an unforgettable view of one of the most iconic landmarks in the U.S.: the Statue of Liberty .

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Length: Eight days Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.

My Friend and I went on the Riverboat Twilight and it was the most perfect/awesome adventure! From reserving our trip to our final walk to our car after the two day cruise, all was perfect! Staff are amazing, from the Captain to the servers, to the musical entertainers. The food is suburb and generous! Everything is very well organized, from our luggage/hotel in Dubuque/seating for meals, free shuttles in Dubuque, etc! The scenery and info along the way from the captain was wonderful! This was an absolutely perfect two day cruise, and we are going again in Mid October as we loved it so much!!.

The service by all involved was first class all the way!

We were very impressed by the personal service we received by the staff and everyone involved. The trip was very nice from a sightseeing perspective, interesting from a historical perspective and very relaxing overall. Plus the food was plentiful and excellent. We highly recommend this cruise to everyone!

Wonderful relaxing two days....

Extremely enjoyable trip. The cruise itself was delightful as you slowly moved up and down the river enjoying the wildlife and listening to the Captain explain the view and history. Unless you are a very big eater you have to be selective as they feed you FIVE times a day. Not only is the food plentiful but it is also very good. The Grand Resort in Dubuque was a nice stay as we had a view of the river. There was adequate time to explore some of the sights In Dubuque. I think we will do this trip again in the future…….

If you are not vaccinated, we strongly encourage you to do so, however, at this time the Riverboat Twilight does not ask for proof of vaccination. Mask wearing is the choice of the individual. The Twilight offers ample indoor and outdoor seating on all three decks and plenty of fresh air.

We will continue to maintain our increased sanitization efforts of the TWILIGHT and our boarding facilities, and we continue to provide hand sanitizer aboard the boat and employ a strong air purifier that uses UVC lighting that has been proven to destroy viruses and other bacteria.

For the safety of our passengers and crew and to maintain proper cleanliness, we have implemented the following guidelines for parents of children under the age of 14. While onboard the vessel and when making use of our food and beverages services, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. With your cooperation and understanding, we will be able to continue to offer a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

As an owner, of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Le Claire, IA and the President of Great Lakes Management Group which manages the hotel’s day to day operations, I wanted to say thank you. The business relationship with the Riverboat Twilight and her passengers is valued and much appreciated. We continue to monitor the franchise, local, state and federal safety guidelines to insure our guest and staff safety. For example, we anticipate a few changes in the near future which will include the following: a plastic shield / barrier at the front desk check,  revised breakfast offerings without a buffet setting, hand sanitizer located in the lobby and all floors at the elevator landings, continued use of hospital grade products to clean and sanitize the guest rooms, individual sanitizer wipes as an in-room amenity, removal of all products in the rooms that are reusable for example, pens, pads, laundry bags, and throw pillows, these items will be available upon request. Best Time to Cruise the Mississippi River

The best time of year to cruise the Mississippi really depends on which part of the river you plan to explore. You must also consider the flux and flow of the river itself as it goes through seasonal changes. (This is a natural consideration with any river cruise, no matter where you are in the world.)

For example, Upper Mississippi River levels rise during spring and the beginning of summer due to snowmelt from the northern states. The river’s currents may be too dangerous to navigate during this time. This means that most upper river trips commence in late June or early July.

As for Lower Mississippi River cruises, they typically operate from November through December and again from April to mid-June. These cruises tend to sail on the bottom third of the river, beginning or ending in New Orleans.

What You Need to Know About Weather for Your Mississippi Cruise

First, you must know that summers along the Mighty Mississippi are hot . Temperatures can reach upwards of 90 degrees, and the humidity may create incredibly muggy conditions. 

Under these circumstances, sudden and extreme thunderstorms can occur. (Although, if you are somewhat of a storm appreciator, the skies aglow with lightning will provide a stunning attraction in itself and great photo opportunities.) 

Secondly, along with the muggy heat will come one of the summer’s most despised creatures: the dreaded mosquito! So you’ll also want to bring bug spray during the summer months and our favorite mosquito tool: the Bug Bite Thing . 

(This is the only thing that has worked to eliminate bug bites right after they happen. Bug bites are not masked with this tool – they are truly gone ! This is why we always take this tool when we travel anywhere warm.)

If any of this sounds unappealing, it’s best to book your Mississippi River cruise for spring or fall when the temperatures are cooler, storms are less likely to happen, and mosquitoes aren’t out with a vengeance. 

Keep Natural Disasters and River Water Levels in Mind When Booking Your Mississippi River Cruise

Be sure to keep an eye on Mother Nature! Annual hurricane season runs from the beginning of June to the end of November and can greatly affect cruises on the Lower Mississippi River. (Just think about New Orleans.) 

Other natural occurrences to be mindful of are droughts and flooding. A ship can’t sail if it is stuck in the river muck, nor can it safely sail if high waters and currents pull the ship up or downstream or are so high the vessel can’t fit under bridges.

Most tour operators have contingency plans in place to handle the river’s changes. One solution is arranging for cruises to take place on the nearby Ohio River instead. Inquire about inclement weather policies regarding the river levels before booking your cruise if you’re concerned. 

What States Does a Mississippi River Cruise Sail Through? 

The Mississippi River flows through an incredible 10 states traveling nearly the entirety of this great nation from top to bottom. 

Did you know the Mississippi is the longest river in all of North America? 

The more popular Mississippi River cruises typically occur in America’s Heartland on the Lower Mississippi River. Popular states on this route are Louisiana, Tennessee (home of Elvis Presley), Arkansas, and of course, Mississippi. 

Mississippi River cruises are also offered on the upper portion of the river, which passes through the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri.

Their itineraries remain virtually the same each season, although keep in mind the precise dates change yearly and some ports may change over time too.

How many days is a Mississippi River cruise? The most popular river cruises on the Mississippi are five to eight or nine days or more. 15 and 22-day itineraries are out there too! 

There aren’t three-day Mississippi River boat cruises like the river cruises we’re used to that we are currently aware of. You can take a one-day excursion (that does not sail overnight and doesn’t go very far) or sign up for a cruise that is a minimum of 5 days.

Five Day Mississippi River Cruise

American Cruise Lines offers a 5-day journey, which is perfect for those who may need a shorter option and want a taste of river cruising, and/or the Mississippi River ports.

This close-jaw Highlights of the Mississippi River cruise itinerary starts and ends in New Orleans. Visit Baton Rouge, Oak Alley with its towering centuries-old oak trees, and Houmas House “Sugar Palace,” all without Louisiana. 

Eight Day Mississippi River Boat Cruise

American Cruise Lines offers three fabulous 8-day cruising options along the Mississippi: 

• The first of which is a package that begins and ends in New Orleans. 
• The second Mississippi River cruise offered is along the Lower Mississippi from Memphis to New Orleans. 
• Finally, in an 8-day option to cruise the Mississippi River along its upper portion, traveling between St. Louis and St. Paul.

Viking river cruises offer five very special 8-day Mississippi river tours throughout the year, including a special Christmas cruise from Memphis to New Orleans. ( Christmas river cruises are very special!) 

They also offer round-trip river cruises from New Orleans and a journey from St. Louis to St. Paul.

American Queen Voyages offers an 8-day round trip from New Orleans as well.

1-Day Mississippi River Boat Cruise

Is it possible to take a 1-day cruise on the Mississippi River? The answer is yes! The sites you’ll see will be limited, and you won’t have nearly the same experience as a multi-day, overnight Mississippi River cruise. 

But if your time is incredibly limited, then this may be a good option for you to get your feet wet with the possibility of taking a future Mississippi River Cruise beyond one day. 

Here are a few options for one-day river cruises on the Mississippi:

• Riverboat Twilight : This steamboat departs from Debuque, Iowa, and gets rave reviews for its full-day cruises. If you wish to stay overnight, you can opt for their two-day Mississippi River cruise experience.
• La Crosse Queen Cruises : Their steamboat cruises depart from La Crosse, Wisconsin. Cruises last between one and a half to three hours. Meals are offered on some of the cruises, such as one offering Sunday brunch or Saturday dinner and another offering free pizza for lunch! 
• Steamboat Nanchez : Be the envy of all riverside pedestrians as you depart from Toulouse, New Orleans, on a historic riverboat. An optional buffet lunch is offered for an additional cost. Steamboat Nanchez also offers evening Jazz Cruises.

Wisconsin Mississippi River Cruise Stops

This small but bustling college river town is home to the Dahl Auto Museum , which boasts a classic car selection as seen “through the eyes of the Ford Motor Company.”

You’ll want to take a trip to The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  You’ll find a lot to appreciate at this popular tourist attraction, which is a beautiful piece of architecture surrounded by nature.

St. Paul, Minnesota

There is so much to see in St. Paul, one of the Twin Cities. This is why it’s a popular start and end port for many river cruise lines. 

There are museums, historic homes, art galleries, and more! This city has something for everyone. A walking tour or bus tour is one of the best ways to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. 

If you’re booking tours on your own outside of the cruise line’s offerings, two recommended tours are The Saint Paul Gangster Tour (bus and walking tour) and The Complete Twin Cities Walking Tour , where you can see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s birthplace, the Minnesota State Capitol, Saint Paul, and lots more!

Iowa Mississippi River Cruise Stops

See the city's beauty on a Hop On Hop Off Tour that brings you to the Historic Millwork District and Dubuque Museum of Art. Or, visit The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa, is the largest aquarium in the Central United States.

You may also opt to head to the Field of Dreams for a special tour; it’s where parts of the famous film of the same name were created, which was released in 1989. 

More attractions in Dubuque include the scenic railway, Fenelon Place Elevator, and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. It has one of the finest religious collections of Tiffany glass worldwide.

If you didn’t get your fill of plantations in St. Francisville, head on over to the Houmas House , which has been restored to its former glory.

The answer to this question is truly subjective. 

That said, the good news is there are only three cruise lines to choose from, whose itineraries we listed above. That includes American Cruise Lines, Viking, and American Queens Voyages. 

Factors you should consider in deciding which cruise line to book depend on things like ship modernization (or year built or refurbished), cost of the cruise, and precise ports that the itinerary goes to. 

If you’re looking for the most recently built ships, Viking is the latest to debut its American cruise ships. Secondly, American Cruise Lines has debuted new river cruise ships in recent years and has more on order. 

American Queen Voyages has new ships as well, but they are focusing on expedition cruise ship builds in the next few years, which will not be sailing on the Mississippi.

How Much Does a Mississippi River Cruise Cost? 

Expect to pay $2,600 and upwards depending on the cruise line, dates, and itinerary you choose to experience the Mississippi River on a multi-day river cruise. 

Here are some sample itineraries and costs on various cruise lines: 

• $2,599 per guest for a 9-day Mississippi River Cruise in July, to $5,399 per person for 16 days on American Queen Voyages. 
• $3,999 for an 8-day Mississippi River cruise with Viking, up to $12,999 for 15 days. (Note that at the time of publication of this article, all of Viking’s 15-day voyages on the Mississippi River for 2023 and 2024 are sold out.) 
• $2,280 per person is a great deal for some select 5-day itineraries with American Cruise Lines. Prices vary from there. They have 11-day options and 22 options, which can be around $6,105 to $15,935 per person, respectively. 

Based on typical costs of a river cruise, Mississippi River cruise options truly run the breadth of cost and can be within reach for anyone’s budget as long as you can reach that minimum of $2,300 per person, give or take some money. Don’t forget to budget for gratuities as well and some extra money if you want to upgrade any excursions beyond what’s included. 

We know that US River Cruises may give some people sticker shock if they’re used to ocean cruise ship prices. However, we hold true to our belief that river cruises are the best value out there. 

Reasons why US river cruises cost more than a European river cruise, for instance, are because the ships have to be built in the United States and the crew has to be large American, which means their salaries are American dollars.

The luxury ships and historic tours are nice, yes. But the real star of Mississippi River cruises has always been the river. There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. 22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

Inaugurated in 2023, the 91-cabin American Serenade won Best New River Cruise Ship of the Year 2023 by Cruise Critic , the first time an American ship has received this prestigious award.

12-day Mississippi River Gateway Cruise: New Orleans to St. Louis

From the French Quarter in New Orleans to the towering Gateway Arch in St. Louis , this American Heritage cruise lives up to its name. Inaugurated in 2015 and totally redecorated in 2022, the 84-cabin American Heritage is the perfect vessel for this interesting itinerary, its design reminiscent of the days when steamboat paddlewheelers plied the Mississippi in the 1800s.

9-day Lower Mississippi River Cruise: Memphis to New Orleans

This nine-day American Melody cruise departs Memphis on September 8 and features eight ports of call including Vicksburg and Natchez in Mississippi, and St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Houmas House in Louisiana. 9-day Upper Mississippi River Cruise: St. Louis to St. Paul

Board the American Symphony cruise ship to visit Mark Twain’s hometown and experience the real-life inspiration behind Life on the Mississippi, the classic memoir chronicling the author's days on the river as a steamboat pilot.

The 91-cabin American Symphony, recently inaugurated in 2022, has 100% private balcony accommodations and a unique bow that opens with a retractable gangway that can be extended for landings virtually anywhere. Rosedale MS is a Mississippi river cruise port and town in Mississippi USA (Bolivar County) with population around 2,000. The town is on the river's eastern bank and approx 19 mi (31 km) northwest of Cleveland MS.

As cruise port, Rosedale MS is included in the schedule of Viking River Cruises USA and was introduced (also as a homeport) with the company's first American ship - Viking Mississippi (2022-built).

Next table shows the riverboat's new 7-night/8-day "Heart of the Delta Cruise" (New Orleans to Rosedale) itinerary introduced in 2023 January.

Viking USA also offers the reverse (Rosedale to New Orleans) itinerary. Both voyages are actually 8-night/9-day cruisetours including 7 nights of sailing on the Mississippi and an overnight hotel stay in the debarkation port (Rosedale or NOLA).

The settlement was founded in the mid-19th-century (established in 1838, town-incorporated in 1872, city-incorporated in 1930) and its economy was largely based on cotton production and export (large plantations served by slaves). The industry initially developed through river shipping but was later boosted with the opening of the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad (used between 1882 and 1946) running from Jackson MS (state's largest city) via Yazoo City MS, the Mississippi Delta and ending in Memphis Tennessee . In 1892, the railroad was expanded by adding the Memphis-New Orleans portion (Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway).

If you arrive in New Orleans a few days before the cruise launches, you have the opportunity to fully explore and experience the wealth of cultural amenities that abound in the Big Easy, including:

The Garden District : A fabulous and historic neighborhood, filled with oak-lined boulevards, grand mansions, and, of course, lush gardens. It’s also the location of the famed Lafayette Cemetery, which is the final resting place of several historical figures, including John Howard Ferguson, who was the defendant in the Supreme Court’s Plessy v. Ferguson decision that established the “separate but equal” doctrine that was later overturned in the 1950s.

French Quarter : No trip to New Orleans is complete without at least a walk-through of the famous district. Here you’ll find Bourbon Street — the beating heart of Mardis Gras — and Jackson Square, where ceremonies marking the transfer of the Louisiana Purchase territory from France to the United States took place in 1803.

Once you board our magnificent cruise ships, you’ll get to explore both the history and the modern amenities of the Big Muddy — as the Mississippi is sometimes called. You’ll cruise from New Orleans to Memphis, Tennessee (or the reverse!). It’s Mississippi Delta living at its finest.

Day 1: New Orleans, LA

Welcome to New Orleans. This vibrant city, also known as the Big Easy, is the perfect destination to begin your Mississippi River voyage. Arrive the day before your cruise and and explore the most popular attractions and cultural highlights of New Orleans at your leisure. With complimentary transportation to the ship, we will make your tour is as worry-free as possible.

Day 2: Houmas House, LA

Explore the Houmas House and its history as you stroll along the gardens, ponds, and the majestic live oak alley that adorn the grounds. Discover the southern splendor of “The Sugar Palace,” with its 16 rooms filled with period antiques and Louisiana artwork.

Day 3: Baton Rouge, LA

Baton Rouge features all the history you would expect in a state capital, but with an added downhome flavor that makes it truly unique. Led by our private guide, enjoy a tour of the cities’ most famous attractions, including the Old and New State Capitol and the interactive Louisiana State Museum.

Day 4: Oak Alley, LA

Once serving as an antebellum sugar cane homestead, Oak Alley Plantation is named after its most distinguishing feature, a row of 300-year-old oak trees. This leafy canopy forms a quarter-mile path leading to the Mississippi River. Restored to its 19th-century grandeur, this classic Greek Revival-style antebellum mansion is breathtaking.

Welcome back to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, and where art and culture abound around every corner of this unique city. The open-air artist colony proudly displays local works on the iron fence in Jackson Square, while the city’s 45 museums carefully preserve its rich history. Hannibal River Cruises on the Mark Twain Riverboat

The Mark Twain Riverboat brings the mystique of the Mississippi River and the history of Hannibal to life through one-hour sightseeing cruises, two-hour dinner cruises, and the Captain's Sunday Lunch events.

Cruises on the Mark Twain Riverboat have been a tradition for decades

The Mark Twain Riverboat has been a unique fixture on the banks of the Mississippi for more than 30 years, offering visitors an up-close view of the Mississippi River during 1-hour narrated sightseeing cruises or 2-hour dinner cruises.

Hannibal river cruises give visitors the opportunity to explore the Mississippi just like Tom and Huck.  This Mississippi River Cruise departs from Center Street Landing three times daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with two departures daily during September and October.  Dinner cruises depart at 6:30 p.m; check for availability. Built in 1964, the Mark Twain Riverboat is 120 ft. long, 33 ft. wide and has a 400-passenger capacity, so there is plenty of room aboard the vessel, which is wheelchair accessible (w/ some limitations.)

1-Hour Sightseeing Mississippi River Cruise

If you have an afternoon to spare in Hannibal, the Mark Twain Riverboat is a must-stop.  One-hour sightseeing cruises on the river include commentary on river history, legends, and sights.  You will see Jackson’s Island, Lover’s Leap, and of course, the Mighty Mississippi rolling along.  Beverages and sandwiches are available on-ship for purchase during these tours.  A cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat is great for family events.  Whether you are a visitor or resident of Hannibal, you can make wonderful memories aboard our unique riverboat experience!

2-Hour Dinner Cruises on the Mark Twain Riverboat

For an extended Mississippi River cruise, be sure to reserve your spot on a 2-hour dinner cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat.

Guests aboard Mark Twain Riverboat dinner cruises are treated to live music, a buffet meal featuring Riverboat Roast Beef, Baked Boneless Chicken Breast, Baked Potatoes, Seasoned Green Beans, the Captain’s Favorite Pasta Salad, a Deluxe Tossed Salad, Dinner Rolls and Dessert.  Iced Tea and Coffee are included, and a cash bar is also available.

Once on board, you are escorted to your table, then you are free to roam the boat until the captain announces that dinner is ready.  After dinner, you are free to dance or sit back and enjoy the music.  Live entertainment is included on Dinner Cruises.  It may be The Rivermen playing modern jazz (Saturday night from Memorial Day thru September), or you might get to enjoy the music of Tim Hart (Mondays & Tuesdays), or Adam Ledbetter and David Damm (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).  Listen or dance to their favorite tunes — and they have been known to take a request or two.  And you never know when a crew member or two may step up on the stage and join in.

It’s a fun night of music for the young and the young at heart!  The dancefloor is available after dinner if you are so inclined, or you can choose to dance under the stars on the outer decks (no dancing on the tables and chairs, please).

The Captain’s Sunday Lunch

Enjoy lunch and a cruise on a lovely Sunday!  The dockside meal includes a buffet of Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Seasoned Green Beans, Deluxe Lettuce Salad with dressing, Dinner Roll, and the Captain’s Favorite Pasta Salad.  Iced tea, coffee and water accompany the meal.  Top all of this with a delicious Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie.

Following lunch, enjoy a delightful one-hour sightseeing cruise on the “Mighty Mississippi” complete with river history, facts about Mark Twain, riverboat stories, and a few (or more!) tall-tales.

Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m.  Departure from the dock will be at 1:30 p.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m.

Attached to the National Word War II Museum, this modern hotel in a restored building carries forward the Art Deco atmosphere of the 1940’s. There’s time to explore the French Quarter, enjoy the unique cuisine of the city or tour the museum. Following breakfast, we’ll check-out and gather your luggage before departing on a guided tour of New Orleans to explore some of its neighborhoods, the storied French Quarter, St. Louis Cemetery, Jackson Square and City Park. After sightseeing we’ll head to the pier where the elegant American Countess awaits. Settle in to your spacious outside stateroom as we begin our voyage up the Mississippi. With flexible open seating in the dining room throughout the cruise, enjoy the ship’s fine dining anytime between 5 and 8pm enhanced with complimentary house wine and spirits. Deep into a Bayou + Nottoway Plantation

After an extensive breakfast, we’ll wind our way along historic River Road to La Place, deep in the heart of Louisiana plantation country, while our expert guide offers colorful insight and historic anecdotes about the region when cotton and sugar were king. Arriving at the edge of the Manchac Bayou, we’ll meet our resident Cajun Captain who’ll guide us in his boat deep into these wetlands – where lush vegetation and moss-draped cypress provide prime habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. American alligators, nutria, ibis, herons and egrets are some of the species we might encounter. Following lunch back on-board, we’ll experience a bit of antebellum life. Surrounded by manicured gardens, Nottoway is a historic 3-story residence with grand, columned verandahs and a lavishly decorated interior including the White Ballroom, entirely white with gold gilding. The White Castle of Louisiana is the perfect example of plantation life of that pre-Civil War era. Returning to the ship in the late afternoon, there will be time to relax before dinner is served. The Charm of St. Francisville

On a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, this lovely town has a colorful early history as the oldest in what are known as Louisiana’s Florida Parishes. In 1810, an adventurer fought off the Spanish to control a group of parishes on the East Bank of the river and designated them the Republic of West Florida. Although the Republic didn’t last long, the identity of the Florida Parishes has persisted to this day. Settled initially as Bayou Sara, floods and fires destroyed the settlement and the hearty residents simply hauled their surviving homes up the bluff to establish themselves anew as the town of St. Francisville. With hop-on, hop-off touring, we’ll explore this historic town with 140 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Admire the homes along Royal Street and stroll the Old Market Hall, established in 1819. The West Feliciana Historical Society Museum and Grace Episcopal Church are other notable highlights. Natchez, Mississippi

After breakfast on-board, our guests will enjoy a guided visit to The Towers, one of the most elegant private homes in this historically rich town, the oldest along the entire Mississippi. Restored recently by Ginger and James Hyland, they will personally accompany our visit as they present the history, architecture and extensive collections of antiques and fabrics that fill the residence. In the afternoon, following lunch on The Countess, we’ll enjoy independent hop-on, hop-off sightseeing with extensive opportunities to explore antebellum life. Among the stops and places you can explore at your own pace are the Rosalie Mansion, built in 1823, and the remarkable William Johnson House Museum. Mr. Johnson was born a slave who gained his freedom at the age of eleven and built this 3-story brick home during his career as the town’s barber. Both Magnolia Hall and Stanton Hall are other Greek Revival architectural gems to include in your visit. A great place to cap the afternoon is the Museum of African-American History and Culture covering the 300 years of the struggle for equality in the environs of Natchez. Meals B+L+D

Vicksburg, Mississippi

Abraham Lincoln wrote to his commanders early in 1863 “… see what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key. The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in your pocket.” Thus began one of the most consequential campaigns of the Civil War for control of the entire length of the Mississippi. Waged over the course of more than three months in the spring and summer of that year, the terrible Siege of Vicksburg gained the Union success albeit with tremendous losses on both sides. The rich character of the city remains, however, as our hop-on, hop-off independent touring will reveal this morning. The stained-glass windows of the Church of the Holy Trinity, built after the war in 1869, are magnificent. Built in 1830, the nearby Anchuca Mansion was the war hospital during the Siege and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The antebellum 1858 Old Court House, the Lower Mississippi Museum and Old Depot Museum are interesting inclusions this morning. Surprisingly, the first bottles of Coca-Cola in the world were filled in 1894 at the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, a fun addition to your ramblings in Vicksburg. Following lunch on-board, our guests will depart for a guided excursion to the picturesque Vicksburg National Military Park where we’ll learn the riveting stories of what soldiers endured over the three months of battle to capture the city. The National Military Park houses 27 major monuments erected since 1903 to commemorate all the states that lost soldiers during the Siege, including one that honors the Union’s Mississippi Black Infantry. We’ll visit the Illinois State Monument which ranks among the many here as America’s most impressive military memorials. Before returning to ship, we’ll also visit the USS Cairo, an iron clad river boat that was commissioned in 1862 and raised from the river bottom in 1964. Meals B+L+D

Greenville, Mississippi + BB King

Today, we’ll arrive in Greenville in the late morning. Following lunch, we’ll depart The Countess for our included guided excursion to the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in neighboring Indianola, Mississippi. Dedicated to its native son, our guided tour of this wonderful museum documents B.B. King’s life and presents his key role in introducing the Blues to the world. We’ll finish this memorable afternoon at the Club Ebony, a musical venue that hosted greats like Albert King, Ray Charles and, of course, B.B. King. Meals B+L+D

Take this day to relax and enjoy the passing scenery as it shifts from bucolic countryside to small, lively river towns. Following breakfast, we’ll gather our luggage and disembark by coach for a guided trip through the city. Luxury cruise ship departs st. paul, stirs river dreams for passengers, locals.

Bob Wilson stepped off a bus at St. Paul's Lambert's Landing on Saturday, a native back in his hometown for the maiden voyage of the Viking Mississippi, a 450-foot-long cruise ship and floating symbol of this city's hopes for a riverfront tourism revival.

Sunshine glittered off the Mississippi River as minnows swam below and seagulls squawked overhead. Wilson and dozens of others, fellow passengers and bystanders both, leaned against a handrail as they squinted up at the ship that prepared to carry up to 386 people downriver to St. Louis.

"We had vacation trips like this delayed, deferred, a year and a half to two years because of the pandemic," said Wilson, 68, who lives in San Diego and said he hadn't returned to the city where he grew up for more than a decade. "But this has been a great experience to come back to this area."

The launch of the Viking Mississippi represents years of city planning and preparation. For passengers, and many locals who passed by and took in the scene, it represents excitement and opportunity for a historic river city trying to get back to its roots.

The voyage is part of a deal between St. Paul and Viking , a luxury cruise line based in Switzerland. It took years to put together, said Terry Mattson, president and CEO of the city's convention and visitors bureau, and construction delays had postponed the voyage. But the ship docked safely in St. Paul around 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Viking Mississippi boasts a pool, a bar, and 193 cabins. On Saturday morning, workers rolled aboard crates of fresh fruit, vegetables and other food. Crew members smiled as they said, "Good morning," cheering as the first passengers walked on board.

For 39-year-old Randy Graff, safety and security supervisor for the city's Parks and Recreation department, the ship symbolized his work and planning.

"I was definitely anxious last night," Graff said. "I've seen drawings and those types of things, but to finally be here in person and to see it — it's kind of surreal."

"It's a big day for us in terms for what this does to activate the river, and what it brings to St. Paul in terms of the volume of people and tourism," said Parks and Recreation Director Andy Rodriguez. "This [river] is such a huge asset."

Phil Abromowitz, 75, and Linda Solomon , 73, traveled from Tucson, Ariz., for the cruise, their first time in Minnesota. They visited the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Van Gogh exhibit days before the ship made land, and said they're excited for the rest of their trip.

"Neither of us have been on the Mississippi. Neither of us have been in this part of the country before," Abromowitz said. "We know there's a lot of history here."

Among the passersby Saturday were some who were part of that history. Mary Rogers, 88, recalled feeling similarly excited as a child in the 1930s, when she watched the Capitol steamer dock in the same spot as the Viking Mississippi. She and her daughter, Susan Rogers, said they hope St. Paul continues to open the river for people and tourism.

"It's nice to see the Mississippi being used in a pleasant way," Susan Rogers said. "I've fished out here with my dad a lot. To see a big boat out here like that, that's impressive."

It marks a turning point for Patricia Hampl, a 76-year-old writer and lifelong resident of St. Paul. Hampl said the city turned its back on the river years ago.

"I think that's being turned around now, or has been turned around for the last 20, even 30 years," Hampl said. "This is not the beginning, but the evidence that the city has decided to turn towards the river."

Dennis Van Norman, 78, lives a mile from Lambert's Landing and has spent countless hours on the Mississippi. He said he watched the city clean significant sections of the river in recent years and hopes to someday take advantage of that effort by boarding a cruise ship or paddle boat.

"This is a pretty posh experience so yeah, I would like to do that someday," Van Norman said.

He might have to wait. Tickets for the ship's America's Heartland tour to St. Louis are sold out until 2023. They start at $4,499. Tickets for the ship's 12-day voyage to New Orleans start at $12,999. Those are sold out past 2024.

The Viking Mississippi pulled out of downtown St. Paul on Saturday evening around 8 p.m. It's due to return for another trip to St. Louis on Sept. 17.
