Cycling Dubai (and the UAE)

Dubai is not often thought of as a cycling destination, but cycling in Dubai and the UAE is really popular. People are often surprised by quite how popular!

Each weekend thousands of people take to the dedicated cycling tracks, which are some of the best you will find anywhere in the world. There are also incredible facilities like the Dubai Autodrome and Yas Marina Circuit – motorsports tracks that are made available for cycling on a regular basis. The crowned prince of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is reportedly a big fan of cycling and has been driving forward development of the UAE’s cycling infrastructure.

If desert cycling tracks are not your thing, then within 1.5 hours’ drive of Dubai there are mountains to be explored whether on a road bike or mountain bike.

So, despite first appearances, Dubai and the UAE are not just all about flat desert cycling tracks. There’s a variety of terrains that can be explored with a group or solo throughout the year. It’s a particularly good bet if you’re looking for somewhere to cycle between October and May (i.e an autumn/winter cycling training destination for those in the northern hemisphere).

Cycling in Dubai (and the UAE)

Tell us more about the cycling tracks in dubai and the uae.

The majority of cycling in Dubai/the UAE is done on these 100% dedicated cycling tracks. They are wide enough to ride two abreast in either direction, and tend to be pretty flat so perfect for fast riding.

The cycling track surfaces are a real treat to ride on compared to my old home roads in the UK! All track & road surfaces are really smooth with hardly any ruts or pot holes.

As they are dedicated to cycling, these tracks are a safe way for people to enjoy their sport. The tracks attract everyone from beginners to families and seasoned racers. My only word of warning would be that when they’re wet they can make you feel a little nervous if you’re not using 25c + tires.

Another amazing facility is the Dubai Autodrome (motorsport racing track). Every Wednesday we can fly around the Autodrome for free! This is also the case at Yas Marina Circuit, which annually holds the F1 race in Abu Dubai (TrainYAS every Sunday and Tuesday).

Here is a list of the main dedicated cycling tracks:

Cycle tracks in Dubai

District One (DXB) (also known as Meydan cycle track or Nad Al Sheba cycle park) – Located near Meydan Race Course. 8km loop with views to Burj Khalifa. Changing facilities. The course is lit at night for night riding.

Al Qudra cycle track – Over 160kms of cycling track heading out into the desert. Very popular at weekends. Bike shop, café and changing facilities.

Dubai Autodrome – 2.5km racing circuit. Free every Wednesday. Mobile bike shop and changing facilities.

Al Qudra cycle track

Cycle tracks in Abu Dhabi

Yas Marina F1 Circuit – Just over 5km of pristine racing circuit tarmac. Free to ride every Sunday & Tuesday. Mobile bike shop, café and changing facilities.

Al Wathba Cycle Track – 30+ km of dedicated cycling track in the desert just outside Abu Dhabi. Weather can change quickly so stock up in the shop before setting out. Bike shop, café/shop and changing facilities.

Al Hudayriat Cycle Track – 5km & 10km cycle track. Busy at weekends with organised group rides. Yas Cycle shop on-site.

Cycle tracks in Al Ain

Al Ain Cycle Track – 23km long cycle track near the Al Ain airport. No shop or changing rooms, but there is a mall close by.

What are the roads like?

Main UAE roads are wide six lane highways and it’s not a good idea to ride these, in fact it’s forbidden.

There are smaller dual/single carriageways with wide run-offs, which with a bit of route planning, can be connected to travel say from Dubai to Al Ain (177km). However, these are not typical routes and generally only undertaken by organised groups or ultra-endurance riders; there is a growing community of ultra-endurance cyclists whose routes include Dubai to Muscat (Oman). These routes will be primarily on roads.

A few cycling groups also ride on roads in and around Dubai and Abu Dhabi on a weekly basis and it’s best to join these groups if you want to experience riding away from dedicated cycling tracks. For example the Dubai Roadsters head out on Dubai roads every Friday with support vehicles in place for extra safety. In Abu Dhabi, Raha Cycling Club organise group rides that take to the roads.

Further afield, Jebel Jais (Ras Al Kaimah (“RAK”)) and Jebel Hafeet (Al Ain) are both mountains with fantastic ribbons of smooth tarmac to the top. Both of these summits are used in the annual UAE Tour and are accessed by cyclists regularly. Riding on or off road is a delight in Hatta/Kalba. An abundance of smaller roads can be linked to create challenging routes with a decent amount of elevation. Riding in Hatta is great fun and the perfect place for punchy riders to attempt Strava KOM on the numerous small climbs.

There’s more info on my favourite places to ride below.

Roads around Hatta / Kalba Hills, UAE

What are driver attitudes like towards cyclists?

One of reasons that dedicated cycling tracks were created was to provide a safe place for cyclists to pursue their sport. It’s not encouraged to ride on the roads, especially on roads with an upper speed limit of 60kph.

However, in quieter areas of Dubai/Abu Dhabi and smaller cities/towns such as Al Ain, Hatta and RAK, it’s possible to ride on roads without problems. I lived in Al Ain for two years and I never once had an issue with drivers when out riding on roads. I would actually say it felt safer than riding in UK.

Cyclists cycling through Jebel Jais mountains, UAE

Outside Dubai, where else have you cycled in the UAE? What was it like?

Apart from Fujairah on the east coast, I have ridden in most areas of the UAE.

In RAK you have the Jebel Jais climb which is used in the UAE Tour. This climb is similar to those found in the Alps with a length of 20km (25km if allowed up to the military check point) at an average gradient of 4-5%. It’s the country’s highest peak and has stunning views (see the two photos above).

In Hatta (one hour from Dubai) you can find some cracking lumpy roads with short sharp hills averaging 10%-17% including the famous Hatta Dam climb (17%) used in the UAE Tour.

Al Ain has an abundance of quiet roads on the outskirts of town which can be linked to climb Jebel Hafeet (12km at 7% – see banner photo and below). There’s also a small, but thriving and friendly cycling community in Al Ain.

Then there is Abu Dhabi which can lay claim to two dedicated cycling tracks (Al Wathba and Al Hudayriat), Yas Marina racing circuit (used for F1, but open to cyclists and runners every week) and several roads which are safe to ride on, especially heading out of the city beyond Yas Island.

What’s your favourite cycle route in the UAE?

Although I am now based in Dubai, my favourite UAE ride would be around Al Ain.

The route takes in Jebel Hafeet (the mountain used in the UAE Tour) and local roads towards a place called Sweihan and back. The GPX file for it is here .

This is a brilliant route due to the variety of terrain, the towering sand dunes and smooth roads I thoroughly enjoy tackling this ride either solo or as a group.

Where to stay in Dubai

Do you have any tips for the best hotels for cyclists.

Dubai (and the UAE as a whole!) is famed for its incredible hotels. Picking just one can be tricky and a lot will depend on your budget.

The places below are the ones I’ve heard are good. While I’ve not stayed at them myself, my feeling is that most hotels will be accommodating to cyclists.

Hotels in Dubai

Jumeirah Beach Hotel   (five star)

  • The partner hotel for Ironman 70.3 Dubai.
  • Private beach, 10 restaurant and bars, 5 swimming pools
  • Unlimited access to Wild Wadi Waterpark.

Jumeirah Al Naseem (five star)

  • Hotel used by David Millar’s luxury Chapter 3 cycling trips to Dubai.
  • Spa centre, private beach, 5 swimming pools

Bab Al Shams Desert Resort  (five star)

  • Located next to the Al Qudra cycle track, 45 minutes from the city centre.
  • Offer a cyclist’s breakfast (even to non-guests) which we have taken advantage of a few times
  • Infinity pool overlooking the desert.
  • Kids club and shaded kids pool.

Studio One Hotel  (four star)

  • 2.5km from Dubai Autodrome (free for cyclists every Wednesday).
  • Modern, trendy vibe.
  • Outdoor pool.

Palm island Dubai

Other hotels in the UAE

JA Hatta Fort Hotel (four star hotel)

  • I’ve had lunch there after rides and the hotel had no issues with cyclists in sweaty gear. I’ve also seen several cycle teams using the hotel as a base during UAE Tour.
  • Views of the Hajar mountains. About 90 minutes from Dubai and 10 minutes to the border with Oman.
  • 2 swimming pools, a spa and tennis courts.

In Abu Dhabi, you might want to consider staying in the Yas Marina area as this is next to Yas Marina F1 track and the Yas Cycles bike store.

Here are some hotels that I’ve heard are good:

  • W Abu Dhabi (five star)
  • Crowne Plaza Yas Island (four star)
  • Park Inn Yas Island (three star)
  • Centro Yas Island (three star)

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK)

In RAK, I’d consider checking out the following hotels:

  • Double Tree Hilton (four star)
  • Rixos Bab Al Bahr (five star)
  • The Cove (five star)
  • Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort & Spa (five star)

In Al Ain, these would be my choices:

  • The Rotana (five star)
  • Radisson Blue Hotel and Resort (four star)
  • Mercure Gran Jebel Hafeet (four star located close to the top of mountain so can start your ride with a 10km descent!)
  • Green Mubazzarah Chalets (located at the bottom of Jebel Hafeet)

Bike shops/hire in Dubai

There are plenty of cycle shops/stores in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

They all sell a diverse range of bikes and cycling accessories but also promote cycling in other ways – for example weekly group rides tailored to different abilities, competitions and even special guest Q&A sessions (for example Wolfi’s Bike Shop Q&A with David Millar).

If you’re visiting the UAE then its advisable to get in touch with one of these shops to jump on a group ride.

Some of the shops also offer bike hire. Where I am aware of bike rental being available, I’ve mentioned it below.

Prices, services and bike brands often change. Please let us know if anything is incorrect.

They also offer a small range of rental bikes.

There are also plenty of bikes to hire at Yas Island Race Track on Sundays and Tuesdays.

Best time to visit Dubai

Can you ride throughout the year.

Yes, you can!

The best time of year for bike riding in Dubai is October-May where average temperatures will be early 30c and below.

During December-March morning temperatures can drop to 10c (or lower if foggy) and it’s quite a sight seeing cyclists in arm warmers & tights!

Summer temperatures (June-Sept) can reach 40c + by 8am, but many people do still ride. It just means starting earlier or going out at night.

What cycling events take place in the UAE?

If you want to time your visit with one of the big organised cycling events, the main even from the professional cycling perspective is the UAE Tour, which is part of the World Tour calendar. It’s the only World Tour race in the Middle East and was first held in 2019 (when the Abu Dhabi Tour and Dubai Tour merged).

Other than that, there’s the well-known Dubai Cycle Challenge (full name is Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge). It’s the largest event in the region and at the 10 th anniversary event in 2019, 2,500 cyclists took part. There are different routes and categories including a kids category and corporate challenge.

The Urban-Ultra Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge is a 215 kilometre cycling challenge that crosses the UAE from Sharjah to Fujairah. It’s due to take place in November 2020.

Are there many cycling clubs in Dubai and the UAE?

There are numerous cycling clubs within the UAE that cater for all standards of riders.

Most if not all bike shops will run a club that is associated with it.

These clubs are very well supported. For instance support vehicles will follow groups to provide refreshments, mechanical assistance or, if you bonk, a ride back to civilisation.

There are also many independent cycling clubs that are formed through friends or colleagues.

All of these clubs will host weekly group rides that will take in city cycle tracks or the more mountainous regions of the UAE.

Along with many others, my club (DRCC) organise trips abroad that have included L’Etape Du Tour and Il Lombardia.

Popular cycling clubs in Dubai: Dubai Roadsters, Cycle Safe Dubai, Velo Vixens, Emirates Road CC and Desert Rouleurs CC.

Popular cycling clubs in Abu Dhabi: Raha CC.

What are your tips for someone cycling in Dubai/the UAE for the first time?

If you’re thinking of cycling in the UAE for the first time, I would encourage you to reach out to one of the many friendly clubs/groups and look to ride with them for your first few outings.

The desert is not a nice place to be if you get lost, bonk or suffer a mechanical far away from cycling hubs – even on dedicated tracks.

So as with any ride, but especially here, always carry; two bottles water/electrolyte, multi-tool, spare tubes, sun cream, pump/CO2, some form of identification (drivers license), money and mobile phone. Also make sure you use a rear light day or night (flash mode) – even on the track.

And finally, it is the law to always wear a helmet in the UAE. You should also avoid cycling on the major highways or dedicated pedestrian paths – otherwise you could be in for a fine…

A big thank you to Carl for sharing all of these fantastic insights on the cycling Dubai has to offer. We hope you’ve found them useful!

Beautiful experience. I thought that in Dubai there were only futuristic buildings but there are many places dedicated to those who want to play sports and especially ride a bike: sea, desert, city and even high mountains! The climate in February is warm but not suffocating so you can ride even at 2pm! Perfect and reliable organization as well as hotel accommodation.

On your bike: cycling in Dubai

Fri, February 10, 2023

All your questions about cycling in the city answered. It's time to make the most of Dubai's year-round sunshine.

Cycling in Dubai – When To Visit, Hotels, Events & Cycling Culture

Your first thought might be, “Can you cycle in Dubai? Isn’t it all sand?” The answer is yes, you can and yes, there is a lot of sand, but luckily you can cycle on that too!

There are lots of ways to enjoy cycling in this high tech city in the middle east. There are many cycle shops catering to all styles of cycling and all cycling brands are available, should you need emergency parts or repairs. Prices in Dubai are different than European prices, so do be careful and always get a quote.

The crowned prince of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has a great love for the sport of cycling. His influence has pushed the hobby in this region to grow faster than any other sport.

Dubai has spent millions of Dollars creating some of the most impressive cycling features in this region. Expatriates and locals alike are to be found cycling on the many tracks daily. Due to the location, cycling in Dubai is a great way to avoid cold winters in European countries, especially if you love being pampered and enjoying the wonderful gastro-treats that Dubai has on offer. The Dubai winds even offer a level of challenge which can at times match the mountains of Europe.

Dubai can also offer quality Mountain biking, Dune fat biking, road cycling, training rides, and even a touch of skiing if you fancy!

Best Time to Visit

Dubai has reliable weather which makes booking your holiday much easier as visitors can almost guaranty that a trip between the months of November and March will leave you with plenty of time to get out on the bike. This coincides with the European winter making Dubai a popular escape for European cyclists looking for winter training. Expect temperatures of 22-30 degrees which soars to a massive 30-45 degrees if you visit outside of these months. The seas are temperate during the winter making it a good way to cool off after a long ride.

If you do visit Dubai during the summer, don’t write cycling off as there are regular club rides leaving at 4 am (to avoid the worst of the heat) and ending with a delicious restaurant breakfast.

Getting to Dubai should be a simple affair since Dubai has one of the largest airports in the world and it acts as a stepping stone for many long haul flights, meaning that almost all main airports fly direct to Dubai.

Cycling Culture

There is a plethora of cycling opportunities in Dubai. From a leisurely ride along the marina’s cycle and running tracks to desert fat biking on the dunes of the Empty quarter. You can travel to the mountains of Hatta or Ras-Al-Khaimah for custom built Mountain biking trails or rocky natural rides in the wadis.

Roadies will awe at the 120km+ of cycling specific, car-free, continuous cycle tracks at the Al Qudra Cycling Circuit which allows for highly tuned training sessions usually only possible on a turbo trainer. If you wish to complete more than one lap then you can literally ride without stopping for as far as you wish! No red lights, no traffic, literally nothing to stop you.

A little closer to the center of the city is the Nad Al Sheba cycle park , a 4km loop which is an excellent facility with air-conditioned showers and a kids cycle tracks too. Road cyclists have the option to visit the regions largest mountain Jebel Jais , located 2 hours drive to the north which consists of a 22-mile climb, stunning views from the top and a hairpin descent.

The awesome Abu Dhabi F1 Yas Marina Circuit open its door once a week to cyclists keen to ride their smooth chicanes and fast straights. A once in a lifetime opportunity to negotiate the corners usually experienced by F1 drivers on your bicycle is a great way to spend an evening. The tracks are fully lit and costs are zero to minimal.

If your main goal is training or you like to cross train with your cycling then Dubai has a professional level facilities which remain underused all year around. The Hamdan sports complex features a full-size Olympic swimming pool with all the trimmings and no queues. Dubai is home to some of the most well-trained masseuses, physical specialists, and trainers.

If you are visiting without your favorite bike then visit one of the many extremely high-class cycle shops which offer high-end test or rental bikes at a very good rate. One of our favourites is The Cycle Hub with its full-size restaurant on the premises. An excellent way to end any tough ride and a fun place to be as well.

Cycling Events in Dubai

The Dubai region offers plenty of cycling events and sportives. The most well known of which is the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge . The sportive sees thousands of riders from all fitness levels racing around the city’s landmarks on rolling closed roads. If you ever dreamt of riding along a 7 lane superhighway around the worlds tallest building. Well, this is your chance.

Pro cycling visits Dubai during February-March with the UAE Tour where you can get unrivaled close proximity to the pros as the event is far less crowded than any other pro circuit stop.

For those who prefer a challenge, Dubai hosts a sanctioned UCI Gran Fondo world championship qualifier to gain an invite to ride in the world championship finals. Dubai also hosts many smaller events during the winter, which range from Grand Prix style city races to Off road team orienteering. Road cyclists can even compete in the nasty hill climb event up the regions largest climb.

Dubai may not be the first destination which comes to mind when choosing a location for your cycling holiday or sports getaway. But this city delivers excellent quality training opportunities specifically for road cyclists. After all the hard work of a day in the saddle you can relax in style with excellent food of almost any kind in the city’s plethora of 5-star restaurants. Nightlife is extremely well catered for and should you need to relax then the many hotels offer hot tubs, saunas, and massages just like the pros receive.

The United Arab Emirates - something new, different scenery, a bit of luxury, throw in some Arabian nights and a UCI race. Looks perfect.

A country synonymous with luxury is full of contrasts that take you from pristine cities with brand new towering buildings, hotels, and monuments designed by local and internationally renowned celebrity architects; to endless deserts dotted with large and small oases and THEN dramatic treeless mountain ranges and magnificent views.

Escape the European and north American winters as the UAE temperatures in November to February offer very mild to pleasantly warm temperatures for cycling...and for swimming in the hotel pools or the Persian Gulf waters.

There are two mountain climbs on immaculate roads - Jebel Hafeet and Jebel Jais. Both climbs are on mountain ranges bordering Oman offering stunning landscapes and views. And both mountains are routes on the UCI UAE Tour.

Add in immaculate roads and cycle paths passing through wadis and sand dunes AND our own Grand Tours Project guide, Ebrahim, you have a unique explorer tour with a personal touch.

UAE Tour 2023 Route stage 4: Dubai – Dubai

Al Shindagha lies 35 kilometres north of Dubai Harbour. Most of the race takes place inside Dubai city, although the riders leave the metropolitan area to enter the Qudra Cycle Track after 40 kilometres.

After an out-and-back trip in the Qudra Desert the riders return to Dubai. With 37 kilometres to go they are very near the line, but the finish only happens after a lap on Palm Jumeira and a 12 kilometres journey up and down King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street.

The UAE Tour had its fair share of Dubai finishes, but never in Dubai Harbour. It is a new seafront district between The Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.

UAE Tour 2024 route

Maps and profiles of the 2024 UAE Tour

Map of the 2024 UAE Tour

There is one small surprise in the route for the 2024 UAE Tour , which typically features flat stages around the two major uphill finales at Jebel Jais and Jebel Hafeet. This year the opening stage features a new finish at Liwa Palace and a new challenge.

The oasis in the Rub' Al Khali desert was featured for the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Dune. The landscape rolls with large dunes and the tarmac laid down across as that make up the Moreeb Dune cycle path will shake up the race with double-digit gradients and a slight uphill finish.

A time trial returns on stage 2 but with a twist - rather than a team effort it's an individual time trial with a series of tight looping turns amid an otherwise straightforward test on the outdoor sports-focussed recreational centre on Al Hudayriyat island.

The GC riders come out to play on stage 3 to Jebel Jais before the race settles in for three flat sprint stages before the grand final at Jebel Hafeet.

Stage 1: Al Dhafra Walk Madinat Zayed-Liwa Palace, 143km

The stage of the desert is one for the sprinters. Starting in Al Dhafra Walk Madinat Zayed, stage 1 heads south for 45km along wide, straight roads. After reaching Liwa, the route will enter an area of very pronounced dunes, which make up the bulk of the stage. Bumpy terrain going to Moreeb Dune, where the race will make two laps of the 18.1km-long Moreeb Dune cycle path characterised by rather steep ups and downs with double-digit gradients. The 143km stage returns to Liwa for the dash slightly uphill at around 3% to the finish line.

Stage 2: Al Hudayriyat Island - Al Hudayriyat Island (ITT), 12.1km

The 12.1km individual time trial takes place entirely inside Al Hudayriyat Island. The perfectly flat and wide route with wide-ranging turns, a few right-angle bends and two successive U-turns should deliver high speeds, winds permitting.

Stage 3: Al Marjan Island - Jebel Jais, 176km

The first of two mountain stages, stage 3 is divided into two distinct parts. Leaving Al Marjan Island, the undulating route heads to Ras al Khaimah and returns to the desert for the bulk of the 176km stage. After the Ras al Khaimah airport, the race will head straight for Jais Mountain with an average gradient of 5%. The final climb of approximately 20 km winds through wide hairpin bends where gradients pitch up to 9% around 2 km from the finish.

Stage 4: Dubai Police Officer's Club - Dubai Harbour, 173km

Stage 4 is another flat stage for the sprinters. After starting in Downtown Dubai with a passage around the Burj Khalifa before crossing Deira and skimming past the Big Flag, stage 4 will head out of the city in the direction of the desert before returning to Dubai for a fast finish in Dubai Harbour. Another chance for the sprinters to shine.

Stage 5: Al Aqah-Umm Al Quwain, 182km

Departing from Al Awah to reach Umm Al Quwain, stage 5 heads through the desert areas on the edge of the Hajar Mountains and continues on stretches of motorway until reaching Umm al Quwain for the final sprint.

Stage 6: Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum - Abu Dhabi Breakwater

Starting in Louvre Abu Dhabi, stage 6 heads to Saadiyat Island and Yas Marina where the race continues westwards before re-entering Abu Dhabi through Khalifa City.  The 138km route continues over Al Reem Island and Al Maryah Island, and passes Qasr Al Hosn, before the final sprint finish at Abu Dhabi Breakwater.

Stage 7: Al Ain-Jebel Hafeet, 161km

Stage 7 is the classic mountain stage of the UAE Tour. Starting in Al Ain Bait Mohammed Bin Khalifa, the final stage has become the classic mountain test of the UAE Tour, finishing on Jebel Hafeet after passing symbolic landmarks. The 10km climb will be a defining point of the race and will be the last chance for those hopeful of winning the red jersey to make the difference. The route up Jebel Hafeet winds through wide-ranging hairpin bends on a wide roadway. Gradients are mainly around 8-9% with a pitch up to 11%, 3 km from the finish. There is a very short descent in the last km, before the last ramp.
