2024 Tour of the California Alps - Death Ride Cycling

Markleeville, turtle rock park 17300 ca-89 , markleeville, ca, 96120, us.

Conditioning & Prep for the Death Ride®

Riding 103 miles and climbing 14,000+ feet all in one day is a daunting task! To make this event even more difficult, the course is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains at elevations between 5,500 feet and 8,732 feet.

We urge cyclists to visit  Alpine County  before the ride to get an idea of what it takes to complete the course. Sign up for the event(s) below to help you train. Ride dates and additional information will be posted as they become available.

Be Prepared for a LONG Ride:

• Include lots of climbing in your training • Spend a minimum of 8 hours on your bike • Stay hydrated before and during the ride; bring extra water • Eat regularly before and during the ride, bring extra energy snacks of your own

Bike Gearing for Climbing:

We recommend a 39 on front and a 28 on back, a triple or a compact. Use your brakes sparingly and evenly on descents, rims can heat up from brake pad friction. Watch for overheating brakes.

Tune Up Your Bike:

Be sure you have good brakes and good tires. You must be able to control your bike and your speed on extremely steep downhills and very sharp corners with possible wet and/or rough pavement.

The new Death Ride® route features over 135 feet of climbing per mile! To train properly, you need to practice your climbing!

In partnership with Alta Alpina Cycling Club (AACC), we offer the Death Ride® Training Series to help you prepare for the big event on July 13th! Whether it’s your first time tackling the Death Ride passes and you want to be ready to complete the whole course, or you’re a veteran looking to ride your best time this year, the Training Series is designed to help you ride at your peak.

Choose from 1 to 4 rides on four dates beginning May 4th, and then every 2 weeks thereafter on May 18th, June 1st, and June 18th.

Each ride is supported by AACC members and tackles different Sierra mountain passes to develop to develop familiarity with the area and skills to be at your best for the Death Ride. Coaching materials are provided regularly to help you make the most of your training.

The Brush with Death ride on June 29 adds a final training opportunity two weeks after the training series and two weeks before the Death Ride.

You can register for the Death Ride, the Training Series, and Brush with Death at:  https://deathride.enmotive.com/bundles/register/acaa93e5-3757-429c-834b-8db17b75c112/key:rfpbqzywwathrxch

The 40 th  Anniversary Death Ride® – Tour of the California Alps, originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, is finally returning to Markleeville, Calif. on July 17, 2021. As many as 2,500 cyclists from across the country will attempt the endurance event covering over 103 miles, six highly categorized climbs, and over 14,000 feet of vertical climbing in just one day.

Originally coined the “Markleeville Alpine Challenge” in 1978, the ride has been recognized as one of the most challenging endurance events steeped in cycling history. Based in the mountains of Alpine County, Calif., the annual ride has threaded its way through several different routes over the years. This year organizers are unveiling the newest route featuring Monitor Pass (8,314’), Ebbetts Pass (8,730’), and the Pacific Grade (8,050’).

B ringing the Death Ride® back to its roots, this year’s event is led by Curtis Fong, founder of Bike the West and original director of the Death Ride® from 1984 – 1995. Fong has a 28-year reputation of producing high-quality bicycling events at Lake Tahoe.

“The Death Ride has always had a special place in my heart,” says Fong, “having helped start and build it in its early years, and now with the opportunity to once again direct this awesome ride, I feel I have come full circle.”

Producing a fully supported ride that is well received by cyclists and good for the community takes a group effort.

“This year’s ride is the culmination of over 18 months of hard work on behalf of our partners,” says Becky DeForest, Executive Director for the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce. “We’d like to thank Alpine County, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Transportation, Bike the West, and the many service organizations and volunteers who help make this event happen.”

The Death Ride® is a fundraiser for the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce and several community organizations. The official Platinum level sponsors of the 2021 event are ATAQ Fuel , Bear Valley Resort , Sierra Nevada Brewing Co ., Alpine County , and Bike the West .

Travelers on July 17 should note the road closures in Alpine and Mono counties from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Highway 89/Monitor Pass from Markleeville to the junction of Highway 395 in Coleville will be closed from 5 a.m. to noon, and Highway 4/Ebbetts Pass from Markleeville to the eastern end of Lake Alpine will be closed from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.

☠️ Death Ride // Tour of the California Alps

Californian Mark Schwartz brings us a set of his favourite rides focussed on the Tour of the California Alps otherwise known as the Death Ride. He’s also added in a few of his favourite local loops which really highlight the amazing riding around this region.

The 56-year-old hails from Markleeville and when the event postponed in 2020 he decided to share some of the USA’s best riding with FulGaz.

Now in its 40th year, the Death Ride offers up to 15,000ft/4,500m+ of climbing over 129 miles/207km, and five epic mountain passes.

The common theme through all of these rides is clear, bright blue skies, and seemingly endless mountain vistas.

MONITOR PASS WEST ASCENT

The ride starts at Monitor Junction, where the highways to Monitor Pass and Ebbetts Pass meet, and travels past Heenan Lake, where Lahanton Cutthroat trout are cultivated in order to preserve the endangered species. With approximately 2800 feet of climbing in just over 8 miles, this HC climb is a tough one. It's the first climb of The Deathride, aka the Tour of the California Alps, and with its relentless pitches it sets the tone for the rest of the climbs.

EBBETTS PASS SOUTH

This climb, the fourth out of five on the Deathride, aka the Tour of the California Alps, is the shortest of them all and is only a Cat. 2. It begins in Hermit Valley and climbs up the southern side of Highway 4 (Alpine State Highway) to Ebbetts Pass. You'll ride past the North Fork of the Mokelumne River, and as you ascend out of the trees, catch glimpses of the surrounding mountains and granite peaks. Rest while you can on this climb so you can tackle Carson Pass next!

EBBETTS PASS NORTH

Monitor Junction, where the highways that climb to Monitor Pass and Ebbetts Pass intersect, is the start of this ride, up Highway 4 to the north side of Ebbetts Pass. It's climb number three (of five) of the Deathride, aka the Tour of the California Alps, and is the prettiest of them all even though it too is a Cat. HC. Enjoy the views of the East Fork of the Carson River, Silver Creek and near the top of the climb, Kinney Reservoir, as you ascend.

CARSON PASS EAST ASCENT

The last climb of the Deathride, aka the Tour of the California Alps, isn't the hardest but may very well be the hairiest. With over 14 miles of climbing it is also a Category HC. Combine that with the fast-moving traffic and limited shoulder in some areas and this climb is not for the faint of heart. Still, it is a beautiful ride through Woodfords Canyon, Hope Valley and past Red Lake and you can revel in the fact that you'll soon top out at Carson Pass, at 8580' of elevation.

MARKLEEVILLE TO SNOWSHOE

Follow the Alpine State Highway north from Markleeville, CA, the home of the Deathride, to Diamond Valley Road, where you'll ride to the Snowshoe Thompson Historical Marker. With lots of bumps on the way you'll get a bit of climbing in and you'll catch some good views of the backside of the Carson Range, a spur of the Sierra Nevada.

DIAMOND VALLEY TO MARKLEEVILLE

Head back to Markleeville, CA, the home of the Deathride, from Diamond Valley, via the Alpine State Highway and take in the bumps along the way back to town. Ride through Markleeville, over Markleeville Creek and finish up at the Markleeville library and take note of the flag a flying from your windy day.

AACC MARKLEEVILLE TT

This course, which connects three iconic passes of the California Alps: Carson Pass, Monitor Pass and Ebbetts Pass, is ridden by the Alta Alpina Cycling Club in its annual racing series. It starts in Alpine Village, CA, near the enclave of Woodfords, CA (once a Pony Express Remount Station) and then heads south on the Alpine State Highway into Markleeville, the county seat of Alpine County and the headquarters of the Deathride. You’ll turn around just past town and head back towards Woodfords but you’ll take in a different view and some rollers, too.

About the Death Ride /Tour of the California Alps

Celebrating 40 years of this iconic event, the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce holds the Death Ride each year to challenge riders to what’s described as ‘the premier cycling event in California’.The event offers up to 15,000′ of climbing over 129 miles, and up to five mountain passes, this ride is sure to challenge you, inspire you, and leave you wanting more!

Training for the Deathride? Here’s the Number One Thing You Should Do

CLIMB! And, climb some more. And when you think you’ve done enough climbing, do even more. Here in the California Alps climbing is pretty much par for the course; head out the door and you’re on some sort of incline (or decline).

death ride tour of the alps

Yesterday, I had the pleasure (and pain) of riding up the west side of Monitor Pass (this view is from just above Heenan Lake) and was reminded that there is no subsitute for climbing if you’re training for a ride with lots of elevation gain.

SURE, I’ve been training hard, with lots of paincave sessions, including HIIT, V02 max, and more, and some of those sessions focus on things such as building endurance, “rocking the rollers” and sweet-spot training (SST); yet I realized while “out on course” that even though my strain is up significantly from the previous week, I’m just not climbing enough.

THIS past week, including yesterday’s adventure, I rode about 116 miles with almost 11,000 feet of elevation gain.

THE Deathride – Tour of the California Alps does that in one day, though, and while yesterday’s ride was 36 miles with over 4000 of climbing, I asked myself could I do that three or four more times.

death ride tour of the alps

The short answer = NO. At least not yesterday. 🙁

As you can see by my happy, yet very sweaty mug, that first big pitch was hard.

MONITOR east, Ebbetts north and south (or west and east depending on your preference), and Pacific Grade (twice) would still be yet to come on July 17th. Yowza, there is work to be done!

THANKFULLY, we’ve all got more time. IMHO, and based on previous experience, right about now (3-4 mos. out) is when you should start ramping 😉 up your training. And it’s not just about the climbing… Your secondary focus should be on time spent in the saddle.

IF you are going to tackle the entire ride, you’re looking at a full day on your steed.

BACK in 2017, when I finished all of the climbs, I was on the bike for about ten (10) hours and my elapsed time was twelve (12) hours!

VENTURING on a velocipede for that amount of time takes a serious toll on the bod., and takes some getting used to, so don’t skimp. And, if you’re not already thinking about it, be sure to address your future nutrition needs by practicing what, and how much, you eat and drink.

EXPERIMENTING with new bars, gels or drink mixes the day of is a recipe for disaster!

So Now What?

WELL, for me that means heeding my own advice and hitting those hills and mountains more often, and taking on longer rides. I would guess that applies to you as well.

ANOTHER aspect of training that I’m working on is the gear. You may have noticed that I was wearing an USWE hydration pack . Amazing piece of equipment by the way – pretty darn comfy and it DOES NOT move. I am not planning on wearing it for the Deathride but I am going to have it on for May’s Paydirt here in the Pine Nuts. And, yes, sharp-eyed reader, Roscoe is a gravel bike. So it was a double-duty deed, if you will, yesterday – got some climbing in and did it on the bike I’ll be riding in May, with the gear and grub I’ll be hauling.

I’m thinking a 50-60 mile ride on dirt will be a similar experience to a century on the road and so I see some benefits to training for Pete Stetina’s ride now, while also keeping that next big day in July, in mind.

NEED some other ideas? Search “climbing” on this blog for myriad posts on the subject. If you’re a neophyte I’d especially call your attention to this post as well as this one .

AFTER all, spring has sprung so it’s time to get cracking!

WE’RE looking forward to riding with you in July (or sooner perhaps), and the community is getting ready for your visit.

BE sure to make those reservations early, by the way. There are fewer resources around due to last year’s Tamarack Fire.

RIDE on, be safe, and climb, climb, climb!

Great advice! And if you don’t live at elevation, arrive a few days early to get used to the thin air. Your first day or two you might get winded just walking up a short incline and you might feel vaguely nauseated and not want to eat as much as you need to ride 200k (oh, it’s a “mere” 100 miles now).

Good advice from a fellow death-rider! Thanks for the suggestion/reminder. If you don’t live in the mountains you def. want/need to address that impact.
