2018 Dodge Journey: It's Still Here
In its ninth year, this bigger-than-most crossover still sells against much fresher competition.
The Journey comes in base SE, mainstream SXT, stylish Crossroad, and well-equipped GT trims. A 173-hp 2.4-liter inline-four with a four-speed automatic transmission (there’s a sign of how old it is—only four ratios!) is standard on all front-drive Journeys except the GT. All-wheel-drive models and the front-drive GT come with a 283-hp 3.6-liter V-6 bolted to a six-speed automatic. For this review, we sampled an AWD Crossroad V-6 model.
What’s New: The Journey is like an oldies radio station that you listen to because you know all the words to the songs. For 2017, the V-6–powered GT model replaced the ambitiously named R/T and featured a stiffer suspension, red-stitched leather seats, 19-inch aluminum wheels, and a premium sound system. All 2018 Journey models now come standard with a third-row seat—the five-seat version has been dropped—which technically makes it a seven-passenger vehicle, so long as the aft occupants aren’t fully grown. Also new for 2018, Dodge has expanded the availability of the popular Blacktop appearance package to all Journey models including the base SE; it brings a black grille, black front-fascia trim, black-painted aluminum wheels, black roof rails, and black mirrors. Last year’s Crossroad Plus trim has been dropped.
What We Like: When Chrysler was developing the Journey, it borrowed some designers from its minivan program who managed to imbue the crossover with clever storage solutions. All Journeys feature hidden compartments big enough to stow larger items like cameras, tablets, laptops, and such out of sight under the second-row footwells and beneath the rear cargo floor. The 283-hp 3.6-liter V-6 delivers decent performance, especially next to competitors in the Journey’s under-$30K price category. The 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system that’s standard on the Crossroad and the GT (but not available on the SE or the SXT) is one of the simplest and easiest-to-use systems out there, especially at the price.
What We Don’t Like: Even though Dodge says it sells slightly more four-cylinder/four-speed Journeys than V-6/six-speed versions, we’d leave those slow, noisy four-bangers to populate the rental fleets. Neither the four- nor the six-cylinder is particularly thrifty at the pump. Transmission shift quality—even with the newer six-speed—can be inconsistent, mixing abrupt gearchanges with stretchy ones. As with many compact and mid-size crossovers with third-row seats, the Journey’s are useless for adult habitation. This Dodge drives like what it is—a mildly updated 10-year-old design. That said, it’s one of the last vehicles with hydraulically assisted steering, so weighting and effort buildup actually feel more organic than in the electrically assisted systems in more modern crossovers.
Verdict: Joey Chestnut can eat more hot dogs, but the Journey has more stash space.

Just traded the 2014 SE in for a 2018 SE Blacktop. I was looking at an SRT because all of the SE's on the lot were 2.4 L. While he was running the numbers for the SRT, I told him All I needed was the 3.6 and AWD, if he could find an SE with that, I was happy. He said he found on but it was a Blacktop Edition. I told him that was fine and to pull the trigger on that. a bit later he told me he found one for sure that was local and he would have it today. I did all the paperwork last night and picked it up today after work. The only things I don't like are no sunglass holder, no Oh shit handles up front, and no 3 zone climate, but I knew that going in. Pretty happy with it for having it for just a few hours.

welcome to the group, glad you found nee you liked, dont believe there are no SRT journeys only r/t and lower models
Thanks for the welcome, but it's more like a welcome back. Been around for a couple years just not very active lately. And you are right, it was an SXT not SRT, damn my fat fingers and muddled mind. Forgive the typo.
Congrats!!!
How about some pics?

Yeah, I know. I gotta take a few, but it's raining now. Want to take a few tomorrow after I get in from fishing.
Still raining here, you'd think I was in Seattle instead of Baltimore we've had so much rain.
The first pic is the new 2018 SE, Blacktop. The second is the 2014 SE, I think it was called the American Edition.
hmm, you should have just bought different rims and tires and saved a bunch of money...just kidding.... welcome to the group

Believe it or not, that happened totally by happen stance. I went in and they had 33 SE's on the lot, all 2.4L engines. I told him I wanted the 3.6 and AWD, didn't matter the color except no white or red( I think dirt shows up best on those two colors). He found a black SXT and I thought, sure why not, but then told him if he found an SE with what I wanted that would be fine. That was the only one he found on a sister lot of theirs. Had to get it delivered in the morning and I picked it up after work. that evening.

Options for Blacktop & Quick Order Pkg

I currently have a 2018 RT+ but not happy with options. I found a 2019 5.7 with a nice list of options plus the Blacktop and Quick Order. I suspect the Blacktop will have bigger brakes and I am hoping a heavier suspension up grades - Can anyone confirm?
No, all 2019 5.7L R/T's except for those with the Performance Handling Group have the same BR5 brakes and Super Track Pack suspension as standard equipment. Does it have the Performance Handling Group? Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Anyone know if the Blacktop package on a GT is just appearence changes or does it also change the gearing like the SXT?
All GT's both RWD and AWD already get the 3.07 axle. The Blacktop Package includes the 20-inch wheels so any car like the SXT which had a 2.62 would get it's ratio changed to 3.07, it's strictly a function of the tire size and not the Blacktop. And yes, the Blacktop is now just an appearance package. Blacktop Package — includes Gloss Black instrument panel cluster trim rings, leather performance steering wheel (SXT), Black grille with Challenger Blacktop badge, GT grille badge (GT), R/T grille badge (R/T), HEMI fender badge (R/T), Black rear spoiler, Black fuel door, 20-in. Low Gloss Black Noise forged wheels, 245/45ZR20 BSW AS Performance tires (SXT) Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Thank you. Interestingly, at least with the 2018 GT blacktop package, they still came with 19" wheels (at least some of them, like mine). Although, maybe tire size differences keeps the overall diameter the same between the 19" and 20" wheels. Someone above mentioned the 3.07 rear gear as a feature of the blacktop package on the SXT, which is why I was asking about the GT - I guess I took that to mean that there was a hardware difference in the gearing.

Thanks for the feedback - appears I should be looking at a 392 model.

Don't believe the experts!!!!
Our Journey has been a pleasant suprise!!! After reading the expert reviews and then reading the reviews that people who actually own them, the opinions are so different!!! I have no problem with the acceleration, even when fully loaded. There is plenty of room in the first 2 rows for adults. The 3rd row suitable for kids. The ride is awesome!!! The cabin is quiet and the steering makes it feel like a much smaller suv. Absolutely love this suv!!! Forget the experts!!!
2018 SE Blacktop 2.4 is just right for us!
My wife has collapsed disks in her back. At the young age of 32 she suffers the back pain of people 20yrs her senior, and so driving a car was really hurting her The seats are just too close to the floor. On Valentine's day 2019, we traded our 2011 Camry XLE for a new 2018 Dodge Journey. Our Camry's work-of-art V6 was a rocket compared to the 2.4 world engine in the Journey. However we have had several Kia and Hyundai vehicles powered by various vintages of that engine and knew what to expect from it. A 0-60 time of 9.5 seconds may be "slow" by 2019 standards, but it's plenty quick enough for the rural area of Ohio we live in. Our Journey is a left-over 2018. It is a base SE, with the backup camera (standard in 2018+), the blacktop package, and the Bluetooth/Satellite and Leather Steering wheel package. It's window sticker was $25.5k, and with all of the rebates we received from FCA, and Ganley motors in London, OH; the car's price was just $18,500! We have had the car for only a month, but first impressions are good. Interior quality is descent and except for accelerating, the engine noise is well subdued. The 4-speed is ancient, but the torque converter is pretty high stall, and allows the engine to review fairly freely to make the most of it's modest output. All in all its performance is not much different than the 2011 Kia Sorento 2.4 we used to have as well, and that SUV had a six speed auto. The car is black, and with the tinted windows, and blacktop package, admittedly it looks much more expensive than it is, but best of all the seating angle is higher than our old Camry, and my wife hurts much less as she drives all over the state for her job, and that is most important to me anyway. Everything else is just an added win! Fuel economy could be better, but 22-23mpg combined isn't awful either.
I like this car a lot.
Plenty of front seat headroom and legroom for larger drivers. Third row seating is great if you have to drive a bunch of kids around. There are two built-in coolers under the back seat floor mat, each of which can hold a 12 pack, for long trips. Power and handling are not great, but adequate for getting from point A to point B. I have been getting about 28 mpg on the highway with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine. No problems so far.
Great Crossover for the price
Still loving this Journey since day 1 best buy so far for the money waranty all is great I take it to the Dealer to do regular maintenance and never feel that they try to oversell some other things love the Dodge Brand This is more of what I was expecting due a (expert review) on most of the online research Mine is the black top edition Honestly Im amaze and extremely happy with this 3 row seat, roomy, quiet ride, even whit the 4 cilinder like mine have enough power to do the job and the fuel economy for the size is great. 2 children lot of traveling is happy place for all my self and family enjoy this wonderfull problem free crossover from Dodge Like all cars give the schedule maintenance and is goin to be a great SUV Thanks
basic of the basic
Dodge is turning a quick buck on this baby! I have the basic model and they went too far; moreover, it was like the stripped it when they built it in Mexico. #1 on the motor they no longer put the cover on the top of motor. #2 They managed to make the front passenger seat so it will not fold down flat ( forward)for long cargo! #3 the digital interface for the speedometer looks like they forgot to finished it with a small digital display for the speed and arrows that stay permanently on, of instead of say a four inch display its closer than less than three inches. #4 DO NOT pull out in front of any moving vehicle because it has the speed of a slug with salt, I think it is the transmission or the computer system, but if you think you are going to floor the gas pedal it will not move very fast. #5 the standard radio is NOT interchangeable with any radio at your local store and I was quoted at best buy over seven hundred for the face plate or in this car the whole front console; moreover, a good blue tooth radio is only a few hundred but you have to buy the console so you are looking a close to a Grand!
