Emmy Award winning and New York Times Best-Selling author Derek Hough started dancing in his hometown of Salt Lake City, UT, at age 11. Just one year later, he moved to London to live and train with the top dance coaches in the world and attend the prestigious Italia Conti performing arts school where he studied theatre, music, and dance.

Hough can also add best-selling author to his list of credits.  His memoir Taking the Lead; Lessons from a Life in Motion  hit stands in August of 2014 and rapidly was named to the prestigious New York Times Best-Seller list during two non-consecutive time periods, a rare feat.

Hough completed his first solo national tour, Derek Hough Live: The Tour in 2019 during which he performed in nearly 60 cities around the country. Derek Hough, America’s Ballroom Ambassador, Hits the Road

A judge on “Dancing with the Stars,” Hough has become one of the country’s most visible dancers. Now his “Symphony of Dance” is touring to 60 cities.

In one week this fall, Derek Hough visited five states as part of his 60-city concert tour “Symphony of Dance.” After a show in Cincinnati, and a post-show ice bath, he flew to Los Angeles for 48 hours to appear on Jennifer Hudson’s talk show, rehearse an upcoming Disney holiday special and film an episode of “Dancing With the Stars,” the hit television ballroom and Latin dance competition that helped start his career 16 years ago. Then he flew to Michigan for the next show.

“I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment,” Hough said with a laugh during a video interview from Minneapolis. “I love the real-time interaction with audiences, where they see you on TV and then the next day, you’re in front of them live.”

Since his 2007 debut on “Stars” as a “pro” — a professional dance partner to an eclectic roster of celebrities with varying degrees of dance talent — audiences have had ample opportunity to see Hough on both screen and stage. In addition to “Stars,” he appeared in Radio City Music Hall’s Spring Spectacular; on TV shows like “Nashville,” “High School Musical” and “Hairspray Live!”; and as a judge on Jennifer Lopez’s dance competition “ World of Dance .”

That exposure has made Hough, 38, one of the country’s most visible dancers, and the rare performer who could headline a nationwide dance-centric tour that has sold out shows on both coasts and in the Midwest. “Symphony of Dance,” which began in October in Hough’s hometown, Salt Lake City, arrives at the Beacon Theater in New York on Nov. 27.

“He reminds me of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, the triple threats,” the veteran choreographer Bruno Tonioli, a “Stars” judge, said, referring to dancers who sing and act as well. “What he does always has that universal appeal.”

Hough’s popularity reflects the unlikely and enduring success of “Stars,” now in its 32nd season. Part of the show’s allure is its approachability.

“Ballroom is one of the most accessible and relatable forms of dance for mass audiences,” said Conrad Green, an executive producer who is now the showrunner for “Stars.”

There was little mainstream representation of ballroom dance when Hough was a bullied child growing up outside Salt Lake City with four sisters. He knew nothing of Kelly and Astaire but adored Michael Jackson. But there was a family connection to ballroom: His parents met on a college ballroom dance team.

Hough’s mother enrolled him in dance classes “to keep me busy,” he said, which he resisted until he realized it meant he got to be with girls. And he soon became intrigued by ballroom’s ethos of partnership.

“There was something about the working together part that was really cool,” he said. “There was this interaction that’s deeper than just learning a routine by yourself.”

Ballroom competitions also allowed him to travel, so dance became “this vehicle to explore,” he said. At first, that just meant Utah and neighboring states. That changed when he was 12.

Derek and his sister Julianne had caught the attention of the internationally renowned ballroom champions Shirley and Corky Ballas, who frequently visited the dance studio where the siblings trained. When the Houghs’ parents split and home became a tumultuous place, the Ballases invited Derek and Julianne to live and train with them in London.

“I was just fascinated by this gift that this boy had,” said Shirley Ballas, now a judge on the British show “Strictly Come Dancing.” But she also recognized what was lacking. “He just needed to learn discipline and the art of how to put it all together,” she said.

In England, Hough trained in many styles of dance as well as acting and singing. But it was the competitive ballroom dance scene that really grabbed him. “I became obsessed,” he said, and spent hours a day isolating his torso and hips, extending a leg, or articulating a foot.” He fixated on competitions. He recalled thinking: “‘How do I win? How do I get better?’” He won a lot.

Hough stayed in London for a decade pursuing opportunities, which included starring in “Footloose” on the West End in 2006. Back in the United States, Julianne had entered the world of “Stars” and recruited him as a backup dancer on a live tour, which led to a guest appearance on the show, then an offer to join as a pro. He declined.

“In the ballroom community, we at first kind of snubbed it,” he said of “Stars.” “We were like, ‘This isn’t a good representation of our world.’” But after watching his sister thrive on the show, he decided to give it a shot, appreciating its reach.

When Hough arrived, in the fifth season, it was clear to Green that he was particularly well suited to the show. “You have to be a charismatic performer, choreograph well and teach well,” Green said. “It helps if you have knowledge beyond ballroom and Latin dance. On all of those metrics, Derek was really good.”

Hough is a six-time “Stars” champion and three-time Emmy winner for his “Stars” choreography. Since 2020 he has been a judge on the show. As a pro, he was especially lauded as a supportive and savvy instructor.

“He helped me discover what I could do,” said Amy Purdy, a Paralympic athlete who competed with Hough on Season 18. “We would build on my strengths,” said Purdy, who has prosthetic feet, “and he would build a beautiful dance around the things I could do.”

As the Hough siblings’ profiles grew, Derek pitched an independent tour to producers — “a rock concert for dance.” He was rejected. And rejected again. But the Houghs eventually found support and cobbled together a show whose popularity became their proof of concept. From 2014 to 2017, they headlined three national tours.

“Symphony of Dance” is Hough’s second tour without his sister. (His first, in 2019, became a Las Vegas residency in 2021 and 2022.) It’s also his first self-funded tour and the first to co-star his new wife, Hayley Hough, who has danced with him for nearly a decade, appears regularly on “Stars” and competed on “ So You Think You Can Dance .”

The 90-minute revue, which features a live band and six ensemble dancers, is rooted in ballroom and Latin dance but also includes tap, hip-hop and contemporary works. Music is Hough’s starting point (he used to be in a band), and he likened the development of the show to “creating an album.” The show’s soundtrack, some of which he sings, features a broad spectrum from pop and rock to jazz standards with bespoke orchestrations.

Whereas in previous shows, Hough says he leaned on more commercial music, he called “Symphony,” “a much more theatrical show” that “allows space for the dancing to speak for itself.”

Hough credits “Stars” with creating a production template and knowledgeable audience for his shows. He also readily admits to emulating its flashy aesthetic, which is reflective of ballroom dance culture, if not always a part of it he embraced.

“I grew up covered in rhinestones,” he said, but turned away from the sparkle as his career progressed. Now, with “Symphony,” he’s embracing those roots, bedazzling his set and costumes. “I missed all the shiny stuff,” he said.

In addition to Hough’s choreography, “Symphony” includes contributions from 10 other dance makers. “They create things that I would never even think about, or do movements that aren’t in my vocabulary,” Hough said.

If the element of partnership attracted Hough to ballroom dance in the first place, the group effort of this tour also reflects a further evolution in his approach.

“In the world where I grew up, everything was competition,” he said. “We were always like, ‘I am against you, I’m here to beat you.’ It was a very selfish world.” Now, he said, his goal is to “bring everybody into the mix. Like, ‘I want to learn from you.’”

Entertaining an audience, whether live or onscreen, remains his motivating force. He pointed to a period of burnout in his professional life when “I didn’t want it anymore.”

But then he began to see his “crazy schedule” of TV and touring as an artistic offering, rather than a burden. “All of a sudden,” he said, “that empty tank just went to full.”

Stepping Into the World of Dance

The choreographer Emma Portner, who has spent her career mixing genres and disciplines , comes to ballet with an eye on its sometimes calcified gender relations.

From the EMMY® award winning mind of Derek Hough, the live dance show is the first-national tour for the performing dynamo in four years. The show features all new high-energy choreography, stunning stage production, astounding versatility and, as always, Derek’s magnetic stage presence.  Fans will journey through a true fusion of dance and music, as Derek explores styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa and hip-hop and everything in between.  Creative team and two-time EMMY® winners, Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo, also known as NappyTabs (Jennifer Lopez’s ‘All I Have’ Residency; Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour; GRAMMYs® creative direction), will co-create, direct and supervise choreography for the tour.

Derek Hough Symphony of Dance is produced by Greg Young of Mojave Ghost who is a Tony Award & Drama Desk-Award nominated producer. ABOUT DEREK HOUGH

Emmy Award winning and New York Times Best-Selling author Derek Hough started dancing in his hometown of Salt Lake City, UT, at age 11. As a three-time Emmy Award winner and twelve-time nominee, Hough is the most nominated male choreographer in Television Academy history.  Hough has also appeared in film, television and stage projects as an actor.  He made his feature film debut for director Duane Adler and producer Robert Cort in the feature film Make Your Move and had a recurring role on the ABC series Nashville.  His stage performances include Radio City Music Hall’s Spring Spectacular co-starring alongside the Tony Award winning Laura Benanti and the critically acclaimed production of Footloose in which he starred as the male lead in London’s West End.  In December of 2016, Hough starred with Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Martin Short and Harvey Fierstein in NBC’s Hairspray Live!  In 2020, Hough joined the hit ABC series Dancing with the Stars as part of the judging. A multi-talented entertainer and the only six-time champion in franchise history, Hough had previously performed on the show as a pro-dancer.  In addition, Hough starred with Jennifer Lopez and Ne-Yo at the judges table for the NBC series World of Dance for four seasons.  Hough can also add best-selling author to his list of credits.  His memoir Taking the Lead; Lessons from a Life in Motion hit stands in August of 2014 and rapidly was named to the prestigious New York Times Best-Seller list during two non-consecutive time periods, a rare feat.  In 2021, Hough launched his solo residency Derek Hough: No Limit in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada.  The critically acclaimed dance-centric show at the Venetian Resort takes Fans on a journey through a true fusion of dance and music, as Hough explores styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa, hip-hop and everything in between.

DWTS star Derek Hough and wife Hayley Erbert share exciting dance tour update

Derek Hough and his wife, Hayley Erbert, have been on an emotional journey after Hayley suffered a health scare last year.

While participating in Derek’s dance tour, Hayley became hospitalized for a cranial hematoma, which required an emergency craniectomy.

As Hayley recovered, she and Derek shared an emotional update about her progress.

It seemed uncertain if she would appear on the dance tour, which Derek scheduled for new dates. He teased a possible appearance from his wife.

The couple recently shared a positive update with fans about Hayley’s health and Symphony of Dance.

Hayley provided an update on her health and dance tour status

An Instagram video posted by Hayley and Derek let fans know that Hayley is medically cleared to participate in the Symphony of Dance tour.

The video featured Derek and Hayley dancing at a tour rehearsal. In her Instagram caption, Hayley provided the exciting update about her status.

“What a blessing (and surprise) it is to be able to be back on stage dancing with my love after such a crazy past four months,” she wrote in her message.

“My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more,” her caption said.

She thanked her doctors for supporting her decision to dance again and said a team of specialists is in place to ensure that her “health and safety” are a priority.

“I cannot wait for you all to see this show! It was so meaningful when we opened last year and now, after everything that has happened, it is truly even more special,” she wrote in her caption.

JLo and DWTS stars reacted to the exciting news

Derek is among the former professional dancers from Dancing With the Stars. He currently serves on the judges’ panel along with Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba.

The recent announcement that Hayley would return to her husband’s tour had many fans, friends, and colleagues showing their support and love.

Jennifer Lopez, who co-starred with Derek in her competition show, World of Dance, and her new music video, Can’t Get Enough, was among those who stopped by to react. Lopez commented, “Beautiful.”

“Thank you J ❤️ You’ve been so supportive, helpful and caring during this time,” Hough replied.

Many of Derek’s Dancing With the Stars co-stars also commented, including Peta Murgatroyd , who said, “Well done, Champ,” with heart emojis.

“Amazing job babe! So happy for you and can’t wait to see you shine,” Maksim Chmerkovskiy wrote.

“Incredible and inspiring,” Shana Burgess commented, adding, “love seeing you dance again.”

Derek’s Symphony of Dance tour resumes with a show on Sunday, April 14, in Melbourne, Florida. Shows that got rescheduled follow in Tampa, Hollywood, Sarasota, Orlando, and Virginia Beach, Virginia, among other cities.

Review: DEREK HOUGH - LIVE! ON TOUR at The Fox Theatre was Exactly Like He Described - Epic! Photos Inside!

Derek Hough wowed Detroit audiences with his first solo tour on Tuesday, April 30th at the Fox Theatre. The moment the Derek Hough - Live! the Tour began, it was a non-stop, high-octane show that had the crowd cheering and filled with excitement over the eight dancers and a live band on the stage. Before arriving to the Motor City, Derek gave an interview to BroadwayWorld Detroit (click here to read it!) and was asked to describe his show in five words, but he could only narrow it down to six with the answer of "fun, energetic, funny, exciting, passionate, and epic!" He was exactly right to use those six words as they were the perfect way to describe the night that the city of the Detroit had with the Derek Hough - Live! the Tour.

The entire night was FUN and that was because both the audience and the performers were equally enjoying their time being in the same space with one another for a couple hours. "You know what's bad is always available, but so is what's

good. We want to celebrate what's good. We want to have a great time; we want to just get people dancing; get people singing; get people moving," said Derek in his preview interview and they did exactly that, which brings me to ENERGETIC. Whoa! Sweat-faced emoji, pass me a fan and a bottled-water, please! These eight dancers can dance! "These are some of the best dancers that I have ever seen," he said, "They are extraordinary! So talented!" Never. Ever. Doubt Derek Hough again. The energy it takes to dance in his tour was outstanding and so much work as it is just one routine after another with tricks and these dancers perform each one with such ease and grace. It's awe-inspiring and to quote my friend when we were leaving, "if I just pack up my life and move to L.A. to become a dancer, you know why."

There is a reason so many people are fans of Derek, he's talented in many ways, but his comedic talents really shined during this . It was a FUNNY show. This was not a comedy by any means, it was definitely a dance show, but it puts a smile on your face and he knew the right spots to make you laugh as

he is a well-rounded entertainer. Derek Hough - Live! the Tour was an EXCITING show. "We really push the limits," he said. Yes, they really did. The vast number of genres and dances that they tackle in the short amount of time when they were on stage was incredible. Plus, the complex routines that they achieve were amazing to watch. Everyone in the theatre was PASSIONATE and it was a wonderful place to be. The dancers on stage were passionate and it makes their performance so much better because of their passion. It will be hard to come across a more passionate audience that were loving the performers throughout an entire show. The amount of passion being given and reciprocated makes for an EPIC experience on and off the stage. The show, itself, was epic enough to stand on its own, but mixed with the passion of the performers and the crowd, it turns into an epic night that was astonishing and anyone in attendance will never ever forget!

Hayley Erbert is returning to the dance floor after a trying health battle. The 29-year-old dancer and wife of Derek Hough will waltz together again on the Symphony of Dance Tour following her traumatic brain injury and subsequent surgeries. 

"I am so excited to announce that I have been cleared to rejoin the Symphony of Dance Tour and I will be dancing when the tour begins on April 14," Hayley shared on Friday's Good Morning America .

A smiling Derek added, "We cannot wait to dance together again on stage and be back with all our fans and thank them, thank you all for the amazing support that you have shown during this time."

"What a blessing (and surprise) it is to be able to be back on stage dancing with my love after such a crazy past four months," Hayley captioned an Instagram video. "My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more. I am so appreciative of the doctors who have supported me in my decision to dance again and my team of specialists that have been assembled to assure that my health and safety is priority. I cannot wait for you all to see this show! It was so meaningful when we opened last year and now, after everything that has happened, it is truly even more special. 🤍"

Hayley was  rushed to the hospital  on Dec. 6 after she became "disoriented" during a performance on the couple's tour stop in Washington, D.C. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel, which required an emergency craniectomy. That injury ultimately led to another  invasive and painful surgery , which replaced  a large portion of her skull .

Derek paused the dance tour in the wake of his wife's struggles, and shared with ET in February that he initially wasn't sure whether Hayley would be able to return to the dance floor. 

"She's doing amazing," he told ET at the time. "She really is. I can't say enough, I really can't, how inspiring she is."

He added, "She's doing better each day. There are still some things we need to sort out, but even now, when I look back at where we were just a couple of months ago to where she is now, it's miraculous. It really is."

Prior to the couple's announcement, Derek told ET of the upcoming return to the tour, "Her presence will always be there. We're not really there yet to see what the involvement is physically, but yeah, she's always there." 

As for what Derek is most looking forward to when the show returns, the 38-year-old  Dancing With the Stars judge previously said, "I just love it. I love seeing people face to face. I love giving them big hugs and dancing with them and answering their questions. I feel like even that was really helpful during this whole process."

Derek Hough, Hayley Erbert announce Hayley will return to Symphony of Dance tour after craniectomy

Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert are heading back on tour together following Erbert's health scare.

In an exclusive video announcement they shared with "Good Morning America," the couple said that they will dance on stage together again on the Symphony of Dance tour this month.

"Hi everyone, I am so excited to announce that I have been cleared to rejoin the Symphony of Dance tour and I will be dancing when the tour begins on April 14 in Melbourne, Florida," Erbert said.

"We cannot wait to dance together again on stage and be back with all of our fans and thank them," Hough added. "Thank you all for the amazing support that you've shown during this time, so we cannot wait and we'll see you very very soon."

Additional dates were added to the tour in February with stops in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Cedar Park, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, Los Angeles, California, and more. The tour will have a final tour stop in San Diego, California, on May 19.

Symphony of Dance features high-energy choreography and stunning stage production. According to a press release, the show also features different ballroom styles including tap, salsa, hip-hop and more. Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo, also known as NappyTabs, co-created, directed and supervised choreography for the tour.

The announcement comes four months after Erbert was taken to the hospital at the end of their Symphony of Dance tour performance in Washington, D.C., in December 2023.

Hough said in a message on Instagram at the time that Erbert "became disoriented" and "was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel that required an emergency craniectomy," a type of brain surgery typically performed in emergency situations, which relieves pressure on the brain, according to StatPearls , an online library published in the National Library of Medicine.

Two weeks later, Erbert underwent cranioplasty surgery, which is a "surgical intervention to repair cranial defects in both cosmetic and functional ways," according to the National Library of Medicine .

In February, the couple shared a video update on Instagram, in which Erbert said she was grateful for the love sent her way.

"It means so much to me and to us as a family," said Erbert about the messages from many during this time. "I believe that it's what's gotten me through this a little bit faster. And it's what's helped me heal. It's what's helped me stay positive throughout this entire experience."

Hayley Erbert Opens Up About Returning to Tour with Husband Derek Hough After ‘Traumatic’ Health Crisis (Exclusive)

"She's all clear and we're all just amazed by her and can't wait to go out there and put on a great show and an emotional show," Hough tells PEOPLE

Just four months after undergoing an emergency craniectomy , Hayley Erbert will rejoin her husband, Derek Hough , on tour.

The married couple announced on Friday, April 5, that they will dance together again on the Symphony of Dance tour , which will pick back up in Melbourne, Florida, on April 14.

"I am just so excited to get back out and dance again after having something so traumatic happen," Erbert, 29, tells PEOPLE.

In December 2023, the So You Think You Can Dance alum was rushed to the hospital following a tour performance in Washington, D.C., where she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel.

Weeks after undergoing a craniectomy, she underwent cranioplasty surgery  to  "replace a large portion of her skull"  that was removed during the procedure. As her recovery process began , Hough, 38, postponed the tour to be by her side.

When he announced new tour dates in February , it was unclear if Herbert would be joining him for the performances.

She tells PEOPLE that what she has experienced these past few months makes being able to go back on a tour even better.

"Dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and so I'm just really excited to get out there and do what I love and also to see the people that have supported me throughout this entire healing journey," Erbert says.

Hough says that while the speed of Erbert's recovery has made them "excited" and "grateful," they are being mindful about not rushing anything.

"We've had extensive conversations and tests and results from different doctors," Hough says. "Every kind of doctor that you can think about from our original surgeon who did the surgeries to new people in our lives and they are very supportive."

The Dancing with the Stars  judge adds that Erbert has an "amazing team" surrounding her that is making sure she is "good and healthy."

"She's all clear and we're all just amazed by her and can't wait to go out there and put on a great show and an emotional show," Hough adds.

News of Erbert going back on tour comes weeks after the dancers, who married in August 2023 , shared a joint Instagram post from inside a dance studio , writing, "Stepping onto this blank canvas together. Beginning to paint again ❤️  @hayley.erbert ."

Dance icon Derek Hough has officially returned to the national stage with his dazzling Symphony of Dance tour. This tour promises a fusion of music and dance that will mesmerize audiences. Hayley Erbert announced Friday that she will be rejoining husband Derek Hough on their “Symphony of Dance” tour. She is returning just four months after an emergency craniectomy.

The tour will resume April 14 in Melbourne, Fla. “I am just so excited to get back out and dance again after having something so traumatic happen,” Erbert said in People .

“Dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and so I’m just really excited to get out there and do what I love and also to see the people that have supported me throughout this entire healing journey,” she added.

Hough is being cautious. “We’ve had extensive conversations and tests and results from different doctors,” Hough said. “Every kind of doctor that you can think about, from our original surgeon who did the surgeries to new people in our lives and they are very supportive.

“She’s all clear and we’re all just amazed by her and can’t wait to go out there and put on a great show,” he added.

Erbert was stricken in December 2023 after the couple’s tour performance in Washington D.C. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel after she had become disoriented.

Erbert underwent a cranioplasty surgery to replace a portion of her skull.

Hough, who postponed tour dates after his wife’s surgery, announced the rescheduled dates in February, though without a commitment that Erbert was set to rejoin him.

The nimble couple revealed the good news on Hayley's Instagram story Friday ... telling their army of fans she's ready to pirouette once more -- hopping back onstage officially April 14 in Florida.

And, she looks completely back to her old self if another video she posted is any indication ... 'cause it seems she's already back to rehearsals with the tour company.

She reflects on her recovery in the posts caption, mentioning dancing just four months after her emergency craniectomy comes as a total shock and thanking all of the specialist who helped get her back onstage.

Remember ... Hayley became disoriented and was rushed to a D.C. hospital the night after a performance on their "Symphony of Dance" tour.

It's clear she's spent awhile back at work ... 'cause Hough posted a pic of the two together last month -- while standing in the middle of a large open dance studio.

Hayley's previously said she's having good and bad days, but it seems like she's clearly had enough good for doctors to sign off on her hittin' the dance floor on tour.
