Here’s a guide to show you the best time to visor Dooars.

Summer (March to June) Summer months do witness an increase in the temperatures and they hover around the 21°C and 31°C mark. But it is not as hot and sultry as it is in the plains. Monsoon (July to September) Monsoon sets in, in the month of June and continues till September. In June the rainfall remains moderate but as months go by, particularly during the months of August and September, the showers become torrential. Winter (October to February) As the temperatures start dipping, Dooars becomes the most favored destination for tourists. If you prefer seclusion and beauty, tourism in Jayanti forest and hill area will be the perfect choice for you. Part of Buxa tiger reserve, the place with the view of Bhutan hills and the beautiful stream, is famous as the “Queen of the Dooars.”

Sight-seeing options in Dooars:

There are many beautiful places to visit in Dooars, and it would take over a month if you plan to hit all the tourist spots of Dooars in a stretch. We are listing the major places for sightseeing in Dooars below and attaching a map for a better idea of the place:

Lataguri and Gorumara

It is one of the major and most crowded tourist-spot. Lataguri is the gateway into Gorumara National park, famous for the rhino and elephant population. Another entry point in the national park is Murti, which is less crowded but rich in natural beauty.

Jaldapara is another national park in this area with a vast grassland and riverside forests. Besides the Rhino and Elephant, it is famous for several threatened faunal species. You can find birds like Bengal Florican, Crested Eagle, Fishing Eagle, Pied hornbill etc. in here. Madarihat is a small town and the entry point to this national park.

You can also visit the nearby Chilapata forest. Here, the major attraction includes the ruin of an ancient castle, famous as “NalrajaGarh”. If you are lucky, you will see Indian Bisons and leopards in this region.

Samsing is a small hilly village on the way to Suntale Khola. Both these places are ideal for nature lovers, with a slow uphill ride, and picturesque tea gardens on both sides of the way.

Buxa Tiger Reserve and National Park

This place is at the north-east corner of West Bengal, at the Indo-Bhutan Border. Buxa was declared a tiger reserve in 1983, and national park in 1992. It has the second highest tiger population in West Bengal after Sundarbans. The place is also famous for the endangered flora and fauna, and the medicinal plants.

On the bank of river Shisamara, it is a tranquil place in the Jaldapara National park area. It is perfect for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The place is away from the noise and pollution of city life, and it offers a chance to see rhinos from close proximity too.

It is an extension of Gorumara National park, separated by Murti River. It is one of the oldest reserve areas in this region due to the floral and faunal diversity. You can go for Jeep Safari here, that takes you to the watchtower

Chapramari-Wildlife-Sanctuary-Entrance

It is one of the major destinations in the Dooars area. Here, river Jayanti creates a border between Bhutan hills and West Bengal. There are several amazing trekking trails with a quaint view. It is crowned as the “Queen of Dooars for its beautiful hill and river view.

Jayanti-River-in-Monsoon

This is a new and upcoming destination in Dooars area. On the west side of the Teesta River, the place and the dam was already a destination for the migratory birds. The barrage and the surrounding area is home to many birds and animals. In the near future, the area is expected to become one of the high-end tourist destinations of North Bengal, with the development of infrastructure.

Dooars Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature across the year in dooars:.

The weather in Dooars is pleasant throughout the year. In summer the temperature does not go above 26°C, which is relatively less than the surrounding areas. In winter, it goes down to 2-3°C but does not touch the freezing point in general.

As the place is at the mountain foothills, it experiences longer monsoon though.  For these favourable weather condition, the forest canopy grows very fast and the hills often stay green.

In the table below, we can get a basic idea of the temperature throughout the year

Dooars-weather-and-temperature

From the month of October to February, it is winter in the Dooars. The temperature goes down gradually and when the sun comes out- the weather becomes pleasant.

Chapramari-Wildlife-Sanctuary-Dooars-in-Foggy-Winter-Morning

With the progress of winter, the mercury may drop near the freezing point, but snow is very uncommon in this area. Generally, the temperature hovers around 5 – 20°C. This pleasant weather is the perfect time for local festivals like the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival between November and December.

The season begins in June with sporadic rains, but July is the true beginning of the monsoon season in here. It lasts till September, sometimes early October.

Samsing-Dooars-in-Monsoon

The average rainfall here varies between 35 – 50 cm. Between July and August, it rains cats and dogs in this region. The rivers run beyond capacity and the barrages often overload. This time of the year is the breeding season of the animals, so most of the sanctuaries remain closed between mid-June and mid-September.

The season begins in March and continues until early June. The temperature ranges from 20 to 35°C. The morning and evening are very pleasant, but the noon and early afternoon hours face scorching heat, especially near the sandy riverbeds.

Tea-Garden-in-Dooars-in-Summer-Morning

The grassland withers, the rise in the heat and humidity level become uncomfortable for the tourists. This season has a relatively better chance of wildlife sighting owing to a less amount of greenery.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

The best time to visit Dooars is in the winter seasons. This time the weather is pleasant and perfect for enjoying the jungle safaris. As monsoon just ends, the rain transforms the forest into a green paradise and the rivers run full to the brim. The weather remains pleasantly cool during the day and cold in the night. Therefore travellers consider winter to be the best time to explore the sanctuaries and enjoy the jungle safaris.

How to Reach Dooars

The monsoon is not the most favourite time for general tourists. However, for the romantic, off-beat travellers and the adrenaline-freaks, it is a great time to come and experience the rain-soaked forest life. The roads are in comparatively good condition which makes it a major monsoon travel destination in West Bengal.

Except for the peak season, summer is a good time to visit and enjoy the beauty too, if you are ready to brave the heat and humidity in the noon.

Railway-through-Dooars-Region

Hotels in Dooars

Dooars is one of the most popular and diverse tourist destinations in West Bengal and North-East India. In all the major tourist spots, there are several staying options which vary as per the budget and choice of the traveller.

However, owing to the crowd rush in the tourist season, most of them stay full months in advance.

Some properties are well-placed near the jungle or tea-estate, with a good view over the nearby forest or tea estates. There are various other options in the nearby towns. These properties do not offer a good view, but they are inside the budget segment.

Often these hotels are in the regions near the ticket booking area for the jungle safari.

So, when you are selecting a Dooars hotel, you need to fix your goals and search for the perfect location that matches your criteria.

100% Magical Dooars Tour Plan: Unlock 3 Night 4 Days Secrets

Every wanderlust must make a Dooars tour plan in his entire life. Dooars is the natural wonder in North Bengal.

Dooars is the gateway of North-Estern and Northern India including Bhutan. Average height of Dooars is 1500-1700 meter.

Dooars is a beautiful place located in the outer foothills of Himalayas. The river Sankosh River divides this region into two places. These are eastern (which is in Assam) and western (which is in West Bengal) dooars.

Every year tons of tourists explore both the places. Here in this article I’ve covered the western Dooars i.e. West Bengal Dooars.

Do you want to make a 3 Nights 4 Days Dooars tour plan? Surrounded by wide forests, tea gardens, mesmerizing rivers flowing from uphills, and streams make you spellbound.

Animal lovers will have a memorable trip in Dooars.

From Leopards, Indian Livet, Asian Elephants, and Pythons to Hyena, Elephants, and Bysons – you can witness each of them.

Away from the urban world, from chaotic vehicle sounds to sweet birds chirping, murmuring waters – It’s the ultimate Dooars.

How do you make a Dooars Tour Plan? What to see in Dooars? How much time will it take to have a complete Dooars Trip? Where to Stay? What Safaries can you enjoy? How to book Safari Tickets? Clear all these doubts from your mind by going through this content.

The content is based on a 4-day and 3-night Dooars Tour Plan. Complete the article to know why Dooars will be your best Travel destination. Even you can enjoy the beauty of offbeat Dooars (little bit) in this tour plan.

Table of Contents

Day 1: From home to Lataguri

Day 1 will start from your home. From wherever you start the journey, make sure you stop at New Mal Junction. New Mal Junction is the nearest Railway station to Dooars. Once tourists reach New Mal Junction, the Dooars Tour Plan will start.

First, book a private car that will take you to Lataguri. Lataguri is only 35-40 minutes away from the Junction. It’s close to the famous Gorumara Jungle. The first sightseeing is the Tea Garden in Dooars.

The North Bengal Tour is incomplete without watching Tea Gardens. So, let’s start with that. You can walk through the Tea garden and meet locals to learn how they pack tea from Tea leaves.

Then, choose a resort hotel or homestay close to most Dooars Tour Spots like Lava, Gorumara, Jaldapara, and Buxa Jayanti.

The first day will end up knowing various details and making plans. The actual journey will start on the 2nd day. So let’s take some rest, have a good meal and a peaceful sleep.

Day 2: Excursion from Lataguri to Lava

While planning for a 3 night 4 days Dooars Tour Plan, the first day is always important. The 1st day has passed. Now it’s the 2nd day of Dooars Trip. We are in Lataguri. Now we will start our journey towards Lava . The average distance from Lataguri to Lava is 78 kilometers. It will take 2-3 hours to reach the destination.

Complete your lunch within 7 a.m. Please keep all your worries aside, and let’s explore the remarkable beauty of North Bengal through Lava. A thick Pine forest surrounds the entire road.

You can have a look at the animals crossing the road. Often, Hyena, Elephants, and Bysons give a glimpse of them.

You’ll be unaware of the time to see the majestic beauty of Lava Road. Within 9-9:30a.m, you’ll end up in Lava. It’s a small Dooars’ Hamlet. It comes from the Himalayan foothills. Lava always mesmerizes the tourists with its amazing view and flock of chirping birds.

The first sightseeing is the Changey Waterfall. Go through the village, Kolakham . Get out of the car and walk down a few miles to explore the amazing beauty of Changey Waterfall. Its milky whitish water falls from a high distance. You can spend some time sitting on a rock beside the fall.

Once you spend enough time and take beautiful pictures of it, go for the next destination. But before that, remember to look at the Kolakham village, its local people and culture. The village showcases the Kanchenjunga view with a clear atmosphere.

The next stoppage is Lava Monastery in Dooars Tour PLan . It was formerly known as Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery. Locals even call it Ratnarishi Bihar Buddhist Gumpa.

The Lava Monastery is a Buddhist Monastery situated in 1987. It’s a must-see attraction of Lava, i.e., Dooars. The authority maintains complete peace even with a large number of tourist visits.

It’s a Tiven Monastery where a massive statue of Buddha is established. The statue surprises tourists. They look at it for hours, take pictures, and ask monks about ancient history. You can do these all if you are interested.

Many prayer halls, ground, and sitting spots make the place a perfect tour spot. While getting back from here, try to visit the Lava Market . The market is at the entrance of the Monastery. You’ll have stores selling clothes, local handmade items, and more.

Complete breakfast in the restaurants if you are hungry.

Then, reach Rishyap through Lava Road. Rishyap is a perfect honeymoon destination in Dooars. People visit the spot to take a look at Mount Kanchenjunga. In winter, Rishyap witnesses the snowfall. The altitude of Rishyap is 8,500ft.

The Lava journey is almost over. The 2nd Day Dooars Tour Plan will be finished by exploring Neora Valley. Visitors get a Government lead to visit Neora Valley National Park.

The Park has the land of Red Pandas where tourists see Red Pandas from very close. From children to adults, everyone would love this adventure for sure.

It’ll be almost 7 p.m. Now, let’s move towards the Hotel. Within 10p.m, the tourist will reach Lataguri Hotel. Complete dinner as soon as possible. Go to bed earlier to wake up early the next morning.

Day 3: Lataguri to Jaldapara Dooars Tour

Today, we’ll look for the entire Jaldapara. Jalpara is an overrated tourist spot in Dooars. Dooars Tour Plan is incomplete without an excursion to Jaldapara. So let’s start the journey after having breakfast between 6:30-7:30 a.m. Go to Jaldapara National Park for a Jeep Safari.

Be Alert: For all the tourists’ kind information, we announce that the Elephant Safari, Watch Tower, or Jeep Safari will remain closed from 15th June to 15th September. Do not make Dooars Tour Plan within this time as all the Safari will be enclosed.

The entire day will pass over the Jeep Safari. The first sight is the Murti River. Murti is a famous river flowing down from Neora Valley National Park. Most visitors used to take a bath in it. The water surface level is below the chest, which is very safe.

The river’s prosody and the scenic water beauty of Murti are unavoidable. Besides that, the thick green forest and the murmuring of dry wood are something great to experience at least once in life.

The bank of the river is tranquil and silent. Tourists have peace of mind while spending time here. Lovers can hold their beloved’s hand and feel loved for a while. A group of friends can enjoy a bonfire. Families can enjoy a feast.

dooars tour plan - hungry tourer

During a Jalpara Tour, the biggest attraction is the National Park itself. The forest spread more than 215 kilometers away. It has vast grassland with flora and fauna. The West Bengal Government declared the Park as a Sanctuary in 1941. The forest department works to protect Flora, Fauna, Rhinos, and many other species.

The Jaldapara National Park is home to many species. Include this place on Dooars Tour Plan. It’s a must-explore spot in Dooars. The one-horned Rhinoceros, deers, Bysons, and elephants walk here. Apart from them, Tiger, Sambhar, and hog deer are seen on the land. It doesn’t end here. Various birds like eagle, partridge, and hornbill come and stay here. The entirety will pass by, watching nature, animals, and birds.

Have an afternoon meal after the Jeep Safari in Jaldapara. Then, visit Bhutan on the same day.

This is how the 3rd day of Dooars Tour Plan ends. Go for Phuntsholing. It’s the border area that adjoins Bhutan and Jaigaon.

The nearby attractions are Bhutan Gate, Amu Chu crocodile breeding ground, Karbandi Monastery, and Phuntsholing market. Cover as many spots as possible within the evening.

Return to the Hotel and get a good sleep by having a tasty dinner.

Day 4: A Full Day Dooars Tour Plan to Buxa Jayanti

On the 4th day of Dooars Tour Plan, the destination will be Buxa Jayanti. After breakfast, try to book the first slot on Elephant Safari. It increases the chance to watch over the forest animals.

Start the journey toward the Jayanti River. Explore the small Hamlet of Dooars, Buxa Tiger Reserve. If you are keen to glimpse Tiger from close to your eyes, it’s a must-visit spot. Jayanti is known as the Queen of Dooars.

Chilapata forest

The distance from Jaldapara to Buxa Jayanti is only 60 kilometers. It’ll take only 2 hours. In the middle of the path, tourists cross over the Chilapata Jungle. It’s the most attractive and thickest forest of Dooars.

The paths are covered with the wide tallest trees. The roads are straight. You’ll enjoy this as a road trip for sure.

Buxa Tiger Reserve is a national park. Numerous species of animals are the residents of Buxa. Lucky people witness Leopards, Indian Livet, Asian Elephants, Pythons , and more. So it’ll be appropriate to say that the Dooars Tour Plan in Buxa is quite interesting and adventurous.

The car can go within Santalabari. Then you have to book a car from the authorities. You’ll reach Buxa within 3-4 kilometers from there. First, enjoy a trek to reach Buxa Fort. The Fort is located at an altitude of 2,844ft in Buxa Tiger Reserve.

This particular spot has a history. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was imprisoned in the Fort during British rule. India is now independent. After 1947, this Fort was used as a Refugee Camp. The journey towards the Buxa fort is very adventurous.

Adventurous persons will surely love trekking. Buxa Fort has a watchtower. From the watchtower, one can look at the picturesque beauty of the entire village.

Take some rest at the nearest homestay in Buxa. The journey is incomplete until you visit the Jayanti Mahakal Temple and Tunia Watchtower. These two spots are near the Jayanti River. The local guide will take the tourists there. In the whole Dooars tour plan, you’ll experience the natural treasure that rejuvenate your strength.

Jayanti River

My Final Thought

So as we promised, it’s a Dooars Tour Plan of 4 days and 3 nights, the journey ends here. We hope the journey leaves good memories in your life. It’ll remain a memorable chapter for nature and animal lovers. The guidance will fulfill every tourist’s desire.

The key purpose of our guidance in making the Dooars Tour Plan was to provide you with a safe journey in North Bengal . Contact us for making more Dooars Tour Plan and other North Bengal Tours. Let us know if you want to spend more or less time in Dooars.

Dooars Tour

The Himalayan Foothills of North Bengal are known as Dooars. The forests, tea gardens, undulating plains, and people of different cultures and ethnicity; all create a heady brew that has made Dooars one of the most fascinating tourist destinations in Eastern India.

The name Dooars is said to have been derived from the word Door in English or ‘Dwar’ in local languages. There are 18 entry points or Doors to Bhutan from the Dooars area. The most famous is the main connecting road of Bhutan with India through Phuentsholing – Jaigaon border.

Best Time to Visit

October to march, june to september, april and may of  dooars, getting there.

Bagdogra is the nearest Airport and NJP is the major railhead. Both are on the outskirts of Siliguri town which is the transit hub for the entire region. However, there are several train stations within Dooars including Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Hasimara and Malbazar. All trains travelling to North East of India have to pass through Dooars and stop at one or the other of these stations.

People and Culture

Tribal culture with its folk dance, drama, songs and folklore is an integral part of the culture of the region. The tribal communities of Raj Bangshi, Mech, Rava, Toto, Limboo, Lepcha and the Bengali and Nepali communities populate the region and provide a rich flavour to the rich cultural diversity of Dooars. Dooars were covered with thick forests and the tribal people lived an isolated existence until the British invaded their space, followed by the Bangladeshis; the British cleared the land for tea estates while the Bengali people after the partition of Bangladesh came here and were actively involved in agriculture. The British were also responsible for bringing another set of tribes called the Madeshia, Uraons, Munda and Nageshia from Chotanagpur to work in the plantations; these tribes since have lived in harmony with the other communities of North Bengal. The majority of people in Dooars belong to the Bengali community followed by the Rajbangshi tribe. Many festivals among the Bengali community and Rajbangshi are similar like the Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Manosha Puja etc. On the occasion of Manosha Puja – worship of the serpent Goddess – village fairs, dramas and festivals are held and villagers pray for good crops. The folk drama of Dooars includes the ‘chor chunni’ and ‘Dham gaan’ is a popular folk song. Rajbangshi’s most popular songs are the ‘Bhawaiya Gaan’ – devotional and love songs – which are very famous in Bengal.

dooars north bengal tourist spot

The Dooars or Duars are the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in North-East India around Bhutan. Duar means 'door' and the region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. There are 18 passages or gateways through which the Bhutanese people can communicate with the people living in the plains. This region is divided by the Sankosh River into the Eastern and the Western Dooars. The Western Dooars is known as the Bengal Dooars and the Eastern Dooars as the Assam Dooars. Dooars is synonymous with the term Terai used in Nepal and northern India and form the only nitrate rich plain in India. The Dooars region politically constitutes the plains of Darjeeling Himalayas, the whole of Jalpaiguri district and Alipurduar district. The altitude of Dooars area ranges from 90 to 1,750 m. Innumerable streams and rivers flow through these fertile plains from the mountains of Bhutan. The major river is the Teesta besides many others like the Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatoya, Raidak, and Kaljani rivers, among others. Monsoon generally starts from the middle of May and continues till the end of September. Winters are cold with foggy mornings and nights. Summer is mild and constitutes a very short period of the year. Dooars is the ideal place in Bengal for monsoon travelling. The economy of Dooars is based on three "T"s - Tea, Tourism and Timber. The main industry of the Dooars region is the tea industry. Thousands of people are engaged in the tea estates and factories. Several people are also engaged in the cultivation of betel nuts which contributes to the economy. Cultivation of other crops is done mainly for local consumption. The area is dotted by several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries which attract a lot of tourists from all over India and abroad, making it an important contributor to the economy and also employer of a number of people. The timber industry, flourishes in this region. A number of saw mills, plywood industries and other allied business also act as an important contributor to the economy. Dooars act as a doorway to Bhutan; thus, export-import industry also flourishes in the area. The towns of Jaigaon, Siliguri and Phuntsholing are important hubs of the export-import industry.

Jayanti Dooars - Complete Tour & Travel Guide

Jayanti Dooars- Located on the edge of Buxa Forest is a quaint forest village along with the River Jayanti. Jayanti River forms a natural border with the Bhutan hills, the hills on the Eastern Side of the river are known as the Jayanti Hills, and the small villages on the western side known as Jayanti villages are named after the river Jayanti. 30km from Alipurduar Jayanti is often referred to as the 'Queen of Dooars' because of its astounding view, fascinating lush greenery and tranquil ambiance.

Jayanti can be visited with ease if you opt for North Bengal Guide's affordable Dooars Tour Packages that include all the latest amenities. You can get to see our travel itineraries in the holiday packages section.

History of Jayanti in Dooars

During British rule, Jayanti became one of the major epicenters of the mining and tea industries in India. It became extremely important to British India's finances. However, it became difficult for the British to supply their commodities as the large European tea and mining industry grew around Jayanti. The construction work of the Jayanti Railway started in 1901 after they asked the Maharaja of Cooch Behar, Nripendra Narayan. Once Maharaja nodded yes, the British built a steel-made railway bridge over the Jayanti River to transport dolomites.

After the independence of India, the passenger train service began. This passenger train used to depart Alipurduar Junction at 08:30 pm and arrive at Jayanti at 9:30 pm. The next day the passenger train used to depart Jayanti at 8 am and arrive at Alipurduar junction at 9 am. This historic railway service stopped once the Buxa Tiger Reserve was announced in the year 1986. The bridge above the Jayanti River is now in complete ruins. You will get to see only some pillars of it as the river has become shallow due to excess pebbles and rocks.

Jayanti Dooars Sightseeing & Tourist Spot

Beneath the vibrant ecology is the Dooars oldest town Jayanti village but in the present time you can't see the town instead what you see is a village that is slowly fading away as time passes by. In Jayanti nature has blossomed and is at its apex where the forest is green and the wildlife is abundant. Away from the tedious and monotonous city lifestyle, a trip to Jayanti offers a perfect destination for a laid-back holiday amidst nature it's a place where time seems to have slowed down its fast pace. Although the river Jayanti remains dry most of the year when the water level rises, listening to the alluring sound of the flowing river, chirping of unknown birds, sweet fragrance of nature and refreshingly cool breeze at Jayanti will make you feel completely rejuvenated. The pebbles along the river bed of Jayanti add unmatched beauty to the place.

The journey towards the Jayanti in itself is an amazing experience driving through the dense Buxa Tiger Reserve has allured many travelers to travel to Jayanti. Spotting a herd of elephants, Barking Deer, or plenty of Peacocks are the most common sights on the way to Jayanti. A sacred place called Pokhari is nearby Jayanti apart from its religious belief this spot is a great place to see the large number of big-sized Magur and Turtle in the waters of the Pokhri and the beauty of this place has certainly something which has refreshing effect. For the Hindus as well as Buddhists, this place holds enormous religious significance. Getting to Pokhri requires a walk through the forests. This splendid lake is around 4 km away from Jayanti.

Another interesting place where you can go is Mahakal Cave located near the Bhutan border this cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and many visitors visit this cave during Maha Shivratri. Mahakal is a renowned tourist attraction as well as a prominent pilgrimage site. It is a cave dedicated to Lord Shiva that is located near the Bhutan border. The Mahakal cave trip through the forest is known for its bird watching. You can also hike to the neighboring Bala Riverbed, which is an excellent site for bird watching, especially peacocks, but don't linger there until late at night because it's a leopard hotspot. Bhutia Basti, located 1.5 kilometers from Jayanti, is another fantastic place to see elephants.

Accommodation in Jayanti Dooars

Situated in the Jayanti forest, the tourist lodge run by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDCL) is a popular staying option here (As of now, this accommodation is closed). This lodge is known for its unique location and the tranquil atmosphere it offers. Apart from this government accommodation, there are many resorts and homestays available to stay here. Amenities in these resorts and hotels include room service, restaurant, front desk service, western bathrooms, rooms that are neat and clean, etc. There are some home stays too with basic amenities. Some of the accommodation is located on the riverbank of Jayanti which enhances the staying experience even more. No matter which one you choose, all these accommodations offer veg as well as non-veg options. So, if you are a vegetarian, you can visit Jayanti without any worry.

Best Time to Visit Jayanti in Dooars

21 Offbeat Places in North Bengal – The Doorways to Eastern Himalayas

' src=

Having spent the largest part of my life in Kolkata, it’s quite surprising to many that I had not ventured into the northern part of my state, West Bengal till the last couple of years. It’s only in the last couple of years that I frequented this region and discovered the hidden gem that is North Bengal.

In this article I’m going to talk about the truly offbeat places in North Bengal which has reasonably good tourist infrastructure for a pleasant holiday.

A Quick Outline

Dooars Region

Let’s begin with the Dooars – that literally means “gateway”. It loosely refers to the districts of Jalpaiguri and Alipur Duaar, located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. The distinct feature of this landscape is the tea estates. Unlike the ones in the hills, these are mostly in flat lands, and you see them wherever you go. Often ignored for the bigger attractions like Darjeeling, or Sikkim, this region is a great place to explore in peace.

It is located more than 100 km from Murti. While a day trip is possible, I highly recommend staying in Buxa Jayanti region to explore it properly. That’s precisely why I have put it in a separate section instead of clubbing it with Dooars, like most tour operators try to do.

8. Buxa Tiger Reserve

Rugged terrain of the Buxa forest leading to ruins of an old fort.

Buxa Tiger Reserve, a biodiverse haven, is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including elephants, barking deers, and peacocks, commonly sighted on the way to Jayanti. The reserve’s dense sub-tropical forests provide a thrilling experience for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.

Kalimpong District, the newest district in West Bengal, carved out from Darjeeling district in 2017, stands as a pivotal region in North Bengal. There are restrictions to parking in areas like Kalimpong market and some offbeat destinations in the district for vehicles hired from outside Kalimpong.

Accommodation: I love staying in Deolo Hills as it provides great views of Kanchenjunga. But it tends to get really cold here in the winter. If you don’t like the chills, you can choose staying in lower altitude like Kalimpong town.

I highly recommend homestays in Charkhole and Lolegaon for an offbeat experience. My Top picks are Yuru Retreat in Deolo Hills, Mayfair Resort and Spa – a premium luxury resort in Kalimpong town.

Perched at an altitude of approximately 5,500 feet, Deolo Hills offers one of the most picturesque landscapes in North Bengal. Located about 6 kilometers from the Kalimpong town, Deolo Hills is relatively serene, tucked away from the crowd of the town and market area.

You might have noticed me mentioning Kanchenjunga a lot in this article. It is the third highest peak in the world, and Deolo Hills is one of the best viewpoints of Kanchenjunga from the Indian side .

At the center of Deolo hills is the Deolo Park, a colonial-era landscaped park that used to the home of the governor. You can spend hours of quality family-time in the park, enjoying sunset walks, flower gardens, horse riding and children’s park.

Another top attraction here is the paragliding camp. There are many certified paragliding centers where you can safely book the adventure.

Very close to Deolo Hills, there’s the Kalimpong Science City, Buddha Park and Hanuman Park – all of which offer spectacular views of the region. Science City is my favorite spot in Kalimpong besides Delo Park.

How to Reach: Deolo Hill is about 70 km from Siliguri and is easily accessible by road. The drive offers picturesque views of the Himalayan range and the Teesta River.

14. Icchegaon

Large trees in the mountains against the backdrop of clear winter sky make Icchegaon charming

Perched at an altitude of around 5800 feet, this serene hamlet offers stunning views of the Kanchenjunga and the surrounding Himalayan range. Known for its tranquility and natural beauty, Icchegaon is an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the lap of nature.

The village’s strategic location provides breathtaking panoramic views, especially at sunrise and sunset, when the sky and the mountain peaks are bathed in golden hues. Short hikes and nature-walks around the village are perfect for exploring the area’s flora and fauna. Birdwatching is another popular activity, with the region being home to a variety of bird species.

Icchegaon’s culture is deeply rooted in its rural and traditional lifestyle. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the local customs and way of life, which is a blend of Nepali and Lepcha influences. The warmth and hospitality of the villagers add to the charm of this destination.

A specialty of Icchegaon is its organic farming practices. The village is known for its cultivation of cardamom, oranges, and other local produce. Sampling these fresh and organic products is a delightful experience for visitors. The village also offers traditional handicrafts and handloom products, showcasing the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

Accommodation in Icche gaon is primarily in the form of homestays, which provide a cozy and homely atmosphere. These homestays, such as the Pine View Homestay , offer basic yet comfortable amenities, ensuring a pleasant stay amidst the serene environment.

Buddha Statue at a hairpin belt with rolling tea gardens of Ambiok all around. Me in blue top standing with my little one in blue-yellow hoodie.

As we drove towards Lava from Dooars, a scenic viewpoint with a Buddha Statue at a hairpin belt caught our attention. What is this place, I wondered, but not for too long. Because there stood a photo-op “I Love Ambiok” right beside the gate of the tiny Buddha Park.

Ambiok is not just a viewpoint, but a perfect offbeat retreat in Kalimpong. The area around Ambiok is a tapestry of natural beauty, offering more than just a visual treat. It’s a gateway to exploring the lesser-known facets of the Kalimpong District, with scenic tourist spots that beckon travelers seeking solace and adventure alike.

The rolling hills of Ambiok are covered in lush green tea plantations where you can stroll as you please. A little further is the Chel Khola river that flows through the tea plantations. The best views of the river is seen from the Hanuman temple at Gorubathan.

How to Reach: Situated around 90 km from Siliguri, Ambiok is accessible by road. The journey takes you through picturesque landscapes, including forests and tea gardens.

16. Rishyap

Tall pine trees of Rishop at 8500 feet altitude

Rishyap, a quaint village nestled in the heart of the Eastern Himalayas, offers a pristine getaway for those seeking solace amidst nature’s untouched beauty.

Perched at an altitude of about 8,500 feet, Rishyap offers a serene environment where the only sounds are the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. The village is accessible via a winding road through dense forests, adding to the charm and adventure of reaching this secluded spot.

One of the highlights of Rishyap is the opportunity for trekking and exploring the rich biodiversity of the Neora Valley National Park. The park, a sanctuary for countless species of flora and fauna, including the elusive red panda, offers trails that range from easy walks to challenging hikes. For the more adventurous, the trek to Tiffin Dara is a must. This viewpoint offers a 360-degree view of the Himalayan ranges, with stunning sunrises and sunsets that are truly mesmerizing.

Darjeeling Region

Darjeeling District, renowned for its sprawling tea gardens and breathtaking views of the Himalayas, is a significant region in North Bengal, India. It is located approximately 65 kilometers from Siliguri, serving as a major tourist destination known for its cultural diversity, historical significance, and natural beauty. The district’s elevation, which ranges from the plains to the towering heights of the Himalayas, contributes to its unique climate and rich biodiversity, making it ideal for tea cultivation and a haven for nature enthusiasts.

As soon as you enter the district you are greeted with the message on the signboard “You are in the Gorkhaland Territory”. This region, though a part of the state of West Bengal, is partially self-governed owing to its distinct cultural identity. The most commonly spoken language in this region is Nepalese.

17. Tinchuley

Me with my little one in winter clothing at the tea gardens of Tinchuley. The snow-covered Kanchenjunga visible at the horizon

Tinchuley stands as a hidden jewel nestled within the ethereal landscapes of North Bengal, offering a serene escape to nature enthusiasts and peace seekers. This quaint hamlet, whose name translates to ‘three chullas’ (or ovens), is aptly named for the three prominent hilltops that resemble the shape of traditional ovens.

Located just about 32 kilometers from Darjeeling and in close proximity to both Kalimpong and Siliguri, Tinchuley offers a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life, making it an ideal destination for those in search of peace and natural beauty.

I visited it on my first trip to Darjeeling when I skipped all the major tourist spots of Darjeeling town due to the excessive crowd and traffic conjestion.I headed straight to the countryside of the Darjiling district and didn’t regret.

The Tinchuley tea gardens are open to tourists unlike the famous Happy Valley tea estate of Darjeeling town. From here you can see the majestic Kanchenjunga on a clear day. On an overcast day, there is a dreamlike mystic charm in the surroundings. Among its most notable attractions is the Tinchuley Monastery, offering a glimpse into the spiritual life of the region and a chance to experience the tranquility of Buddhist practices.

Moreover, Tinchuley’s vicinity to other tourist spots like the Gumbadara viewpoint, with its striking views of the Teesta River, and the picturesque orange orchards, add to the charm of visiting this serene hamlet

How to Reach: Located roughly 80 km from Siliguri, Tinchuley is accessible by road. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes, including tea gardens and mountainous terrain.

18. Kurseong

Sunset at Kurseong Tea Estates

Kurseong, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor Darjeeling, is a hidden gem in North Bengal. Known as the ‘Land of White Orchids’, Kurseong offers a serene and less crowded alternative to the bustling hill stations. Its mild climate throughout the year makes it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the hills.

This charming town is dotted with beautiful tea gardens like Makaibari and Castleton, offering breathtaking views and insights into the tea production process. Visitors can take guided tours of the tea estates and indulge in tea tasting sessions. The Eagle’s Craig viewpoint provides panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, including the majestic Kanchenjunga on a clear day.

Kurseong is also home to several historical and cultural sites. The Dow Hill area, with its haunted forest and century-old Victoria Boys School, adds a touch of mystery to the town. The Giddapahar Seti Mata Temple and Ambotia Shiva Mandir offer spiritual solace amidst scenic settings.

For those looking to savor local flavors, Kurseong has a range of cafes and restaurants that offer a mix of local, Indian, and international cuisine. Cochrane Place is popular for its colonial ambiance and delicious food, while Margaret’s Deck offers a unique tea lounge experience with stunning views. The town also has a variety of eateries serving traditional Nepali and Tibetan dishes, allowing visitors to explore the local culinary landscape.

19. Lamahatta

Huge trees of Lamahatta Eco Park and me sitting there with my little one.

Lamahatta is an eco-tourism village known for its serene pine forests, walking trails, and a tranquil pond. The area’s natural beauty and peaceful ambiance make it an ideal spot for relaxation and nature exploration.

The Lamahatta eco park is the center of attraction – the perfect retreat for families. But besides enjoying this beautiful garden, you can also trek through the pine forests to the lake at the top of the hill. There are some good places to eat and shop for handicrafts in Lamahatta.

How to Reach: Around 80 km from Siliguri, Lamahatta is reachable by road. The journey offers scenic views of the lush forests and tea gardens.

Stunning views of Takdah Orchid center with yellow flowers blooming against the green house in the backdrop

This hidden gem, cloaked in mists and surrounded by lush tea gardens, is approximately 28 kilometers from Darjeeling town and about 45 kilometers from Kalimpong, making it an accessible yet secluded getaway for those traversing North Bengal’s picturesque landscapes

Significant for its colonial-era bungalows and sprawling tea estates, Takdah presents a step back in time with its old-world charm. The region was once a favored destination for British officials seeking respite from the Indian summer, and today, these bungalows have been repurposed into cozy homestays, offering visitors a taste of historical luxury amidst nature’s bounty.

The prime center of attraction in Takdah is the Orchid Center which is home to some of the most exotic variety of Himalayan flowers. You can also enjoy walking in the mystic Pine forests in Takdah.

How to Reach: Takdah is approximately 28 km from Darjeeling town and can be reached by road. The drive through the winding mountain roads is an experience in itself.

21. In and Around Mirik

My excited toddler in neon green t-shirt enjoying in the huge part of Mirik Lake.

Nestled amidst the verdant hills of North Bengal, Mirik is renowned for its serene lake, lush tea gardens, and the tranquil beauty that encapsulates the region. With Mirik Lake and the verdant park built around it, Mirik can no longer be called “offbeat”. It is in fact the most famous day trip destination from Darjeeling. It is the second most popular tourist spot in the Darjiling district.

However, the areas surrounding Mirik are dotted with offbeat gems that beckon the intrepid traveler seeking paths less trodden. Exploring these places offers a unique glimpse into the serene beauty and cultural richness of the region, making for an unforgettable journey beyond the well-known attractions of Mirik.

Just a short drive from Mirik, the enchanting village of Soureni stands as a testament to the region’s natural beauty and agricultural bounty. Known for its vibrant tea gardens that stretch as far as the eye can see, Soureni provides a peaceful retreat and an insider’s look into the tea-producing culture of the Darjeeling district.

Further off the beaten path, Bunkulung , or Bungkulung, offers an immersive experience into rural life amidst the mountains. This agricultural village, nestled along the banks of the Balason River, is gaining popularity for its community-based tourism initiatives. Visitors can engage in agricultural activities, enjoy organic meals, and take part in river camping, making it a perfect spot for those looking to connect with nature and local traditions.

Another hidden treasure near Mirik is the orange orchards of Rangbhang . This area comes alive with hues of orange during the harvest season, offering a picturesque setting for leisurely walks and picnics. The orchards also provide a unique opportunity to learn about the local agricultural practices and the significance of orange farming to the region’s economy.

For the more adventurous souls, the trek to Phuguri Tea Estate presents an exhilarating challenge. This offbeat trek through dense forests and along undulating tea gardens offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, culminating in a visit to one of the highest tea estates in the region, where one can savor a fresh brew straight from the source.

Well, that’s a wrap to my list of top offbeat destinations in North Bengal. The entire region is fairly unexplored, with Darjeeling stealing all the limelight. You can truly experience the local culture, the warmth of the hosts and the beauty of nature in this part of India. And all that in a less commercial and affordable way.
