I am so disappointed that we haven't visited this charming bistro before. What a gem. We sat in the pretty courtyard garden amongst the pretty flowers and statues. Plenty of shade if a hot day. Staff were very friendly and attentive. We chose the breakfast,... well priced at R60, which includes toast and coffee. Thankfully, the breakfast was served on lovely warm plates, and our eggs were perfect. I opted for wholemeal and my husband chose white bread for toast. Unfortunately, both were hard and far too crispy, but the lovely waitress brought us another serving and this was so much better: the homemade wholemeal bread extremely tasty. We will definitely be back as the meals looked very tasty and the cakes yummy. More

Ignoring the absent WiFi issue, which simply must be addressed, this is a lovely cafe, with cheery, efficient service and a delightful garden area. Great menu variety, attention to detail with everything that comes out of the kitchen and a subdued background music track that... is as odd as it is unobtrusive. Well worth a visit. More

I had an hour to spare while my boyfriend was having a procedure done and was pleasantly surprised. Such a nice menu but as it was late afternoon, settled for carrot cake and coffee. Picked this one up off Trip Advisor and it was a great find. The club house sandwich is unique at least for me being Canadian. It’s like a toastie with chicken mayo, ham, fried egg and avocado. Delicious with chips and a small salad. You... don’t leave this place hungry that is for sure. Try to save room for desert! I dare you😎 More

I've often seen the place off York Street thinking that it is just another corner coffee shop with a few tables inside. Met a friend there for lunch one day and discovered the garden at the back, and really nice food at a reasonable price.... Needless to say I've been back a few times since then and will be back in the future. More

This hidden gem is a delight! The restaurant itself reminds me of hidden charming little cafes in concrete jungles, the small little Cafe leads to more seating in an outside garden. This reminds me of little cafes in far away countries. The menu is a... culinary journey and a tasteful homage to many different flavors and influences all deliciously brought together with a distinctive South African palette! If you ever want a quick escape and a tasty breakfast, brunch or lunch - This is the spot for you! Service is always warm and excellent - being a vegan with a severe seafood allergy, I literally depend on my waiter to keep me alive! I had a dhal craving and luckily my server and the kitchen was able to rustle up a vegan dhal lunch that was absolutely DELIGHTFUL!!! More

The Cajun chicken salad on the Banting menu is world class. Wow! Definitely my favorite lunch spot when I'm in George.

When you are in George try to find the Travel Bugs restaurant. Sit in the garden and order great food and then enjoy. The ladies serve lunch with a smile. It is a must know / must do and especially for the ladies in the... George area, men appear to be a scare commodity. We loved the food, typical South African with a taste of the far east. This is such a lovely little restaurant, great for daytime eating. They have a garden area with secluded spots, and the staff have almost all been there for years. They get to know you if you stick around, and one of our group even had... a 'special' and no longer had to specify what she wanted. My personal favourite is the Cape Malay Chicken Curry. Yum! More

We really enjoy visiting Travel Bugs, not only is the staff very friendly and give good service, their food is also very good, well prices and delicious. Still a favourite to visit

The service was super friendly and not invasive (as one sometimes find). I enjoyed a smoked salmon, cream cheese and avo toast and it was delicious! Refreshing with cucumber shavings and crisp lettuce.

I found a Travel Bug®. What now?

Trackables  (Travel Bug® and Geocoin) add a great twist to the Geocaching adventure but there can be some confusion as to what to do with them.  Read below to get your questions answered.

What is a Travel Bug ® or Geocoin?

A Travel Bug® is a dog tag that is attached to another item (small stuffed animal, keychain, action figure, etc.) and has a special number assigned to it.  The number is used to prove that a cacher discovered or picked up the tag.  By entering the number here , you will be whisked away to the trackable’s web page where you will be given the following information:

• Name – What the owner has named the tag
• Release Date – When the Travel Bug®was set out on its journey
• Origin – Where the release was made
• Recently Spotted – Which cache the tag is currently in or the name of the Geocacher who has it in their possession.
• Current Goal – This is the mission that the owner has dreamed up for the item.  Some goals are to just travel from cache to the cache, where others are to visit caches with specific criteria (near Major League Baseball parks, the Eiffel Tower, etc.)
• About This Item – Anything the cache owner wants you to know about the traveler.
• Gallery Images – Pictures of the tag’s adventures
• Tracking History – This is where you can see every hop the Travel Bug® has taken.  The really cool feature here is the map that will show you every stop.

Geocoins are exactly like Travel Bugs® except they are a minted coin (like the military challenge coins).  Sometimes you have to look on the edge to find the tracking number.

OK, so now you know what they are.  It’s time to find out what to do with them.  There are several scenarios that are likely.  We’ll cover 4 of them.

How to Log Trackables:

• You found it in a cache and you picked it up – When you get home to log the caches you found for the day, visit here .  Type in the tracking number.  Read all about it.  Click on Add a Log Entry.  Click the drop down for Type of Log and selected Retrieved from cache name.   Check the date.  The Tracking Number should be filled in for you.  Add a comment and tell the owner about how you found their tag.  Click on Submit Log Entry.  The traveler will show up on your inventory list in the right column of your profile page.  Now, find a cache that matches the bug’s Current Goal and place it there. When you log that cache select the Dropped option for that tag in your inventory.
• You saw a Travel Bug® in a cache but you left it there – You do the same thing as in option 1 above but you select Discovered It as the Type of Log.
• You got the tag from another Geocacher – Follow the steps in 1 above but select Grab It From Current Holder:  cacher name.   If the person you got it from has not logged it yet, use the Retrieve entry type.  Don’t forget to use the Dropped option on the cache page when you place it in a cache.
• You take the trackable to a cache but you don’t place it in the cache.  When you log the cache as found select the Visited option for that trackable in your inventory section of the Found It log.

Some things you should know about Travel Bugs® and Geocoins :

• Sometimes Travel Bugs® and Geocoins are NOT in caches as advertised.  This could be for many reasons, the most common is that the cacher who took it out of the container hasn’t logged it yet.
• It is generally considered fair game play to move the tag or coin in a reasonable amount of time which is about 2 weeks .  Send a message to the owner if you will have to keep it longer (we all have life events that may affect when we can cache again)
• Please respect the owner’s wishes and try to take it to somewhere that will get it closer to its Current Goal.
• Don’t keep the tag or coin.  The whole purpose of these game pieces is to travel.  People pay their hard-earned money to watch it trek across the globe not become part of another cacher’s collection.
• Generally tracking codes should not be published online in forums, Facebook, etc.  If you take a picture of a tag or coin hide or blur the tracking code.

The Geocaching.com website will automatically keep track of all your trackable activities and this will add a new dimension to your caching.  Watch as your stats quickly increase as you move trackables on their way.  It is quite amazing how quickly something can travel across the country or across the world when Geocachers are involved!

George’s love of travel began at a young age when his family took traditional summer vacations, driving across America towing an RV.  They visited some great locations like Nashville, Bowling Green, Myrtle Beach, Cape Cod, and even visited our neighbors to the North, Canada!  For his 25th wedding anniversary, George and his wife took their first cruise sailing on the newly built Carnival Breeze, and that’s when the travel bug really started!  George had just as much fun planning the trip as he did on the trip, and met a travel agent onboard who advised him on how to get started.

As a travel agent, George has taken Caribbean and Canadian cruises, and will experience his first Alaskan cruise in June.  He’s also become a big fan of all-inclusive resorts which have become his niche for booking travel. He’s a lifelong Disney fan, and visits the parks as often as possible. He made his first visit to Disneyland last year as part of an Adventures by Disney Backstage Magic tour.  

George has completed the Royal Caribbean University of WoW training, is a graduate of the College of Disney Knowledge and is an AM Resorts Master Agent. George is married to his wonderful wife Elaine, and has two grown Daughters, Danielle and Samantha.

“A little restaurant with a big menu” Review of Travel Bugs Garden Restaurant

We were told about the restaurant by family who had been told they had to eat there, for good reason. We found ourselves in George the day before Good Friday. Service was very friendly and quick. The menu is very varied so I'm sure you will find something you will like no matter your taste. My wife had the Patat, which was a whole sweet potato with a filling of sour cream, baby spinach and roasted seeds. She really enjoyed this. I had the Malay chicken curry. The chicken was very tender but otherwise I found the dish to be very ordinary albeit of good value. Some suggestions would be to use basmati rice instead of run of the mill tastic. I also did not see or taste any of the spices typically associated with Malay dishes such as cardamom, cloves etc and I think their addition could possibly improve the dish. If they were open over the Easter weekend we would have gone back though.

One of the best places to have breakfast in George by far!! I think no one can compete with the quality of food and service that this place offer, fresh and funky but elegant in the same sentence! Well done to you!!

The food and coffee here is really very good, much better than one would initially expect from such an un-assuming little place. If the weather permits, they have a beautiful outside courtyard area too (behind the restaurant).
