A List of The Correct Order of the 11 Movies in The Love Comes Softly Series

A List of The Correct Order of the 11 Movies in The Love Comes Softly Series

Do you ever hope to go back in time to the beautiful 19th century rugged, open country where trust, faith, love, family, friends and hard work are core values still sought after and revered? Are you a sucker for some good old-fashioned love stories? Then the “Love Comes Softly” series is for you!

Are you confused about which movies are part of the series? Well, many people are! It’s a great Christian series by Janette Oke but it can be tricky knowing which order to watch them in.  So here’s the list with the correct order of the Love Come Softly Series – if you want to watch them in storyline order, not the order they were released.

#1 –  Love Begins (2011)

Love Begins

Is it any Good?  Bear-ometer score: 72% like it

Mommy bear’s family movie review – love begins is a wonderful beginning to an excellent series. i have read the book series and these movies are similar in ways but pretty different. if you haven’t read the books or if you don’t compare them to the movies (because they really are quite different) then you will really enjoy the entire movie series..

Main Characters – Ellen Barlow and her sister Cassie, Clark Davis

Summary – After their father’s passing, Ellen Barlow (Julie Mond) and her sister Cassie struggle to maintain the family farm in Anderson’s Corner. When Clark Davis (Wes Brown) finds trouble in town on his way to California, Ellen agrees to hire him at the farm to work off his debts.

Before long, Clarke and Ellen unexpectedly develop feelings for each other. Ultimately, a turn of events inspires the pair to begin a legacy of love and faith together in this stirring family drama.

#2 – Love’s Everlasting Courage (2011)

Loves everlasting courage

Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review –This is the most recent movie in the series and just like all of the other movies in the series, it is inspirational and motivating. It has a great story to follow and is touching.

Main Characters – Ellen Barlow Davis and her daughter Missie, Clark Davis

Summary – With the bank threatening to seize their farm, Clark Davis (Brown) and his wife Ellen (Julie Mond) struggle to support their family on land withered by drought. To make ends meet, Ellen takes a job in town, but she pushes herself to exhaustion and succumbs to scarlet fever.

Devastated, Clark is determined to stay and raise their daughter on the land that he and Ellen loved. With help from his parents (Ladd and Boxleitner), the family’s love and courage lead them to inspire new beginnings in this compelling story based on the epic Love Comes Softly series.

#3 –  Love Comes Softly (2003)

Is it any good  bear-ometer score: 84% like it, mommy bear’s family movie review –   it is very uplifting and keeps you on your feet. it has a great story of strength and faith. this is the original movie and probably the best done one, imho..

Main Characters -Marty and Aaron Claridge – Clark Davis and daughter Missie Davis

Summary – Marty and Aaron Claridge (Katherine Heigl and Oliver Macready) travel west in search of new opportunity. But when tragedy strikes and Marty is suddenly widowed, the young woman must face the rugged terrain, bleak weather, and life among strangers – alone.

That is until a handsome widower named Clark Davis (Dale Midkiff) suggests a platonic “marriage of convenience” until Marty can return home. As the months pass, though, Marty and Clark discover an unexpected new love where there was once only loss.

#4 –  Love’s Enduring Promise (2004)

https://www.amazon.com/Loves-Enduring-Promise-January-Jones/dp/B0006IUDC6/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1410815765&sr=1-1&keywords=Love%27s+Enduring+Promise

Is it any Good?  Bear-ometer score: 82% like it

Mommy bear’s family movie review – this is a movie that shows faith and wisdom. it is a heartwarming film that everyone in the family can watch and enjoy together. you don’t have to worry about the content being dirty at all. you will fall in love with this series if you give it a try..

Main Characters – Clark, Marty & Missie Davis -Willie LaHaye

Summary – Based on Janette Oke’s best-selling novel, this poignant sequel to Love Comes Softly will draw you in from beginning to end. Missie Davis (January Jones) is devoted equally to teaching school and doing her fair share on the farm.

When a handsome railroad heir (Mackenzie Astin) starts to woo her, Missie is nearly swept off her feet. That is until a mysterious stranger (Logan Bartholomew) with a troubled past shows up. Torn between two very different men, Missie learns what is truly important in this inspiring film that the whole family will enjoy.

#5 –  Love’s Long Journey (2005)

Loves Long Journey

Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – Another wonderful part of the Love Comes Softly series. It is fun to see Missie and her husband embark on their new journey together. This series is very wholesome and good.

Main Characters – Missie Davis LaHaye & Willie LaHaye

Summary – Missie’s (Erin Cottrell) surprise discovery – her pregnancy – sets her on a new course that’s at once thrilling and terrifying.

After all the planning and dreaming, she and her husband, Willie (Logan Bartholomew), have headed west in a covered wagon, leaving behind the prairie home of Missie’s parents. Now, caught between the excitement of the new adventure and the pain of not knowing when she’ll see her family again, Missie copes with the challenges, and cherishes the rewards, of her new homestead.

#6 –  Love’s Abiding Joy (2006)

Loves Abiding Joy

Is it any Good?  Bear-ometer score: 71% like it

Mommy bear’s family movie review –this is a wonderful story of hope and joy. it is a great way to show that although we have struggles and trials in our lives the lord always knows what he is doing and has a plan for each of us..

Main Characters – Missie Davis LaHaye & Willie LaHaye – their adopted son Jeff LaHaye and love interest Colette Doros

Summary – Following a treacherous journey West, Missie (Erin Cottrell) and her husband (Logan Bartholomew) have set up a homestead where they’ve begun to raise a family. And now that a railroad line connects the states, Missie’s father (Dale Midkiff), is able to visit. But when the joyful reunion is interrupted by tragedy, the faith and love of this family is once again challenged in a story you and your family will never forget.

#7 –  Love’s Christmas Journey (2012)

Love's Christmas Journey

It was really hard to decide where to put this movie since it has characters that are barely mentioned or not mentioned at all in any of the other movies. I decided to put it here because it makes the most sense character-wise since all the movies that follow this have Belinda in them. You may wish to watch it last or watch it separately, at Christmas time.

Main Characters –

Ellie Davis King (Clark and Marty’s daughter, not mentioned in the films but in the book Love’s Enduring Promise) & Aaron Davis (Clark and Marty’s daughter, seen in the movie Love’s Enduring Promise), both half-siblings of Missy (daughter of Clark & Ellen, who dies in Love’s Everlasting Courage)

Summary – Inspired by the best-selling “Love Comes Softly” book franchise written by Janette Oke, the first-ever uplifting, almost 3 hours, Christmas story in the series.

While still mourning the loss of her husband and daughter (neither her husband nor daughter are in any other movies), recently widowed Ellie Davis King visits her brother Aaron Davis and his children for Christmas.

Ellie agrees to watch Aaron’s children when he has to leave town. When a fire is set, Ellie works with a handsome deputy to clear a friends name and learns that if she can trust her faith, this Christmas may bring more miracles than she hoped.

#8 –  Love’s Unending Legacy (2007)

Loves Unending Legacy

Is it any Good?  Bear-ometer score: 75% like it

Mommy bear’s family movie review –this is not my favorite of the series but i still liked it a lot. it has a cute and precious storyline and makes it intriguing to watch. this movie is sweet and shows another great side to love.

Main Characters – Missie Davis LaHaye & Son Mattie LaHaye – Belinda Marshall, Jacob Marshall – Zach Tyler

Summary – Missie LaHaye bids a reluctant goodbye at the grave of her late husband Willie, who died two years previously in the line of duty as the sheriff of Tettsford Junction. Even after giving up her job as the town schoolteacher, Missie has found running the ranch on her own overwhelming, so she has resigned herself to letting her son Jeff and his new bride take control of it jointly with her brothers Aaron and Arnie.

Missie and her ten-year-old son Mattie travel back to her hometown to live near the farm of her parents, Clark and Marty Davis.. Certain she will never find love again.

Missie redirects her feelings and when the “orphan train” arrives in town, she adopts Belinda, a feisty young teenager who’s arrived with a secret. As Missie struggles with raising Belinda, she finds she is falling for the local sheriff who might be the only man who can help her save Belinda….and herself.

#9 –  Love’s Unfolding Dream (2007)

Love's Unfolding Dream

Is it any Good?  Bear-ometer score: 80% like it

Mommy bear’s family movie review – this is a cute film from the love comes softly series. there is a lot of determination and dedication shown by the main characters and not to mention some fun romance to go along with it. it is fun to watch the story unfold as you wonder what will happen next..

Main Characters – Belinda Marshall LaHaye Tyler – Drew Simpson

Summary – Missie’s (Erin Cottrell) adopted daughter Belinda (Scout Taylor-Compton) is determined to become a doctor, but despite her dedication and ability, Doc Jackson (Robert Pine) believes women should stay at home – and so does Belinda’s suitor, Drew Simpson (Patrick Levis)!

But with faith and hard work, Belinda begins winning the hearts and minds of everyone around her, including a wealthy dowager (Nancy Linehan Charles), who just might help make Belinda’s dreams come true in this satisfying family drama that also stars Samantha Smith and Dale Midkiff.

#10 –  Love Takes Wing (2009)

Love Takes Wing

Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review –This movie is great for learning and seeing a good example of faith and hope when you endure and keep trying.

Main Characters – Belinda Marshall LaHaye Tyler Simpson

Summary – Still as feisty as ever, Belinda Simpson is now a doctor in a small Missouri town where an unknown plague is spreading fear and resentment among the townspeople. One local resident thinks the illness was spread from the town orphanage and wants to see it shut down.

Belinda struggles to make sense of the disease and God’s plan for the beleaguered town. But with the support of Lee Owens, the town’s handsome young blacksmith and her best friend, Belinda learns that if she can rely on faith and love then everything else may just fall into place!

#11 –  Love Finds a Home (2009)

Love Finds A Home

Is it any Good?  Bear-ometer score: 76% like it

Mommy bear’s family movie review –this one is a little bit more boring than the others in the series in my opinion but i still enjoyed it. the storyline is not as dynamic as the rest of it is..

Main Characters – Belinda Marshall LaHaye Tyler Simpson Owens

Summary – The eight compelling film based on Janette Oke’s acclaimed Love Comes Softly novel series stars Sarah Jones as Dr. Belinda Owens, a young woman with a loving husband (Jordan Bridges) and a rewarding career. But when Belinda’s pregnant friend Annie (Haylie Duff) comes to stay, Belinda must come to grips with her own inability to conceive.

And when Annie’s meddlesome mother-in-law (Oscar Winner Patty Duke) gives Belinda advice about her medical practice. Belinda looks to a higher power for strength, wisdom and even diplomacy in this riveting installment of the popular, uplifting films about the enduring power of love and faith.

You forgot the last movie Love's Christmas Journey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love%27s_Christmas_Journey

September 18, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Thanks for the heads-up. I did not include it since it is not on DVD yet, but looks like it's coming out on 10/30/12 so I'll order it and get it on our site when it comes out.

I don’t have the dvd’s, but I’ve watched them several times. It would be nice if the hallmark channel would play all of them and in order. Have any pull with them? Thanks

' src=

June 29, 2015 at 8:52 pm

Unfortunately, no. I wish they would do the same thing!

' src=

July 21, 2018 at 10:56 pm

On this movie Haley Duff’s character was pregnant. She then qent to be with her husband before the birth of her baby. Lillian was adopted from the orphanage on this movie. She wasn’t grown up. Also it ended with Belinda getting married. She wasnt pregnant. There is another movie out there somewhere. I remember seeing it several years ago. Lillian was probably 16. Belinda was pregnant. They lived in a white house. I think Belinda and a boyfriend went in a cave and started caving in. She and the boyfriend were rescued by her adopted Dad. Does anyone remember what I’m talking about?

July 21, 2018 at 10:59 pm

I accidentally typed Belinda. It should be Lillian and her boyfriend went in a cave or something similar to one.

I agree, I would love to see them in order, to make more sense of the story he is trying to portray, I loves these shows but would like to see them in order and WITHOUT Commercials. Also I saw them on TBN and they are selling them which I thinks sucks.

' src=

August 15, 2020 at 7:00 pm

I am not sure what you mean by “they are selling them.” Could you elaborate?

' src=

September 9, 2020 at 7:33 pm

Frndlytv tv is doing that now I dvrd them

' src=

Love’s Christmas Journey comes sometime after Love’s Unending Legacy and around the time of Love’s Unfolding Dream since Aaron and Ellie are Clark and Marty’s children (married in Love Comes Softly) and Missy is older than Aaron by 10-12 years (Belinda in Unfolding Dream is Missy’s adopted daughter). Hope that helps.

' src=

January 10, 2016 at 9:46 pm

I thought marty and clarke had two son’s. Aaron who Marty was pregnant with when her husband Aaron died and another son who is “Loves enduring promise”? I did not remember that they had a girl (ellie). Can anyone clear up?

' src=

August 21, 2016 at 3:46 pm

Me either I’ve watched all except this one

July 21, 2018 at 9:23 pm

Clark snd Missy had 2 boys. The first one was by her husband that died then they had a boy together.

' src=

December 21, 2016 at 9:35 pm

I believe in the books series they had a daughter named Ellie =)

' src=

April 17, 2020 at 5:40 am

The movies are quite different from the books. I think the titles are in the same order as the books, but there are a lot of differences in the story line.

' src=

October 17, 2020 at 6:36 pm

Yes the difference are vastly different! In my opinion so different that they are barely related. Same time period and some similar names but other than that they don’t go together. I like the movies but can’t think of them as the books turned into movies. Even the movies seem a bit disjointed.

' src=

March 27, 2021 at 5:51 am

' src=

July 2, 2017 at 7:30 pm

Clark had a daughter by his first wife..his first wife died ND then he met soon to to be second wife who was married too..and her husband died. She was pregnant by her first husband had a boy..then she had another baby boy by Clark her second husband..

' src=

July 25, 2017 at 4:58 am

Ellie was in the book series but not the movie. It gets confusing. Hope this answers your question.

' src=

August 3, 2017 at 2:06 am

I was also wondering who Ellie was also, when Missy met Willy, Clarke and Marty had 2 sons?

' src=

August 19, 2017 at 3:56 am

in the book Marty has the son of her first husband, then a son and a daughter with Clark. In the movies they change Willie’s background to add more drama and they neglect to add Marty & Clarks adopted daughters.

' src=

September 28, 2018 at 8:52 pm

Please forgive me if I’m wrong. I got interested in the series when Hallmark showed several of them on s Saturday a few weeks ago. I haven’t seen all of them yet. I have ordered the DVD’s. In one of the movies I watched Marty and Clark had two sons and the daughter that they lost due to crib death. Then the local pastor talks her in to adopting an older daughter. Afterwards they find out that the girl has a brother given to another abusive family. Anyway they eventually get him away from the family. I’m sorry but I don’t remember all the names.

' src=

December 2, 2019 at 2:47 pm

They did not state that the last child after Aaron was a boy. The child never spoke in the movie and the child’s name was never mentioned. It could have been a girl. Remember Missy as a child, she dressed in boys clothes. Also the boy Marty had from her first husband did not die. She named him after her first husband. He is the child that caused Clark’s accident with the ax on his leg.

' src=

April 12, 2020 at 12:25 am

Marty had Aaron, from her late husband. Clark delivered and raised him. Clark had Missy, from his late wife Ellen. Clark and Marty has another boy; which they named Arnie. He does speak a few lines in the movie, Love’s Enduring Promise, then you never hear him mentioned again.

' src=

February 27, 2022 at 9:06 pm

Ellie was adopted

' src=

July 5, 2021 at 8:54 pm

I believe the second child’s name is Ernie, not Ellie. He is the direct child of Clark and Marty after their marriage. He appears in Love’s Enduring Promise. Patrick 😊

Please Note: Number 9 and Number 10 came out last in production but if you want to watch them in the order of the story line and what comes first in the order of time then you must start with no#9 listed here as it is number #1 in the story. Then watch #10 listed here next which is the 2nd DVD in the story. Then the rest of the order here is correct because their listing of no#1 Love comes softly is 3rd in the story line. Love comes Softly was the first book written and most of us read it and fell in love with the story. And each year or so the Author would come out with another book; usually of the next generation. After the last DVD in the series; Love finds a Home, The Public Loved the Story so much that Janette Oke finally went back and wrote about the past lives of the 2 main characters that started in her first book Love comes Softly. So those are Love Begins and then Love’s everlasting courage. That should be watched before Love comes Softly. As far as Loves Christmas Journey…i would watch that last. You can kept reading the many comments but i can assure you my comment is the real deal. I have all 11 DVDs and all the books and plan to past them down in my family after I’m dress and gone. I’m 65 yrs old and have been enjoying these since i was a young mother. GOD BLESS , ENJOY!

' src=

September 19, 2018 at 8:39 pm

Pamela, That is awesome! I watched “Love Comes Softly” on Hallmark Channel last night. (I recorded it and got too busy to watch it a couple of weeks ago when it was on.) I knew of the book and remembered it as I watched the movie because years ago my younger sister passed all her Janette Oake books on to me after she read them. Anyway, I decided last night to share these movies (the whole series) with my soon to be 11 year old granddaughter. (I also have to look and see if I still have the books in my book collection – probably do!)

I am a couple of years older than you and still enjoy a good, Godly love story. This is why I want to share it with my granddaughter! Thanks for sharing – it blessed my heart to know there were others in my age group watching these movies. I pray they have a wonderful impact on my granddaughter!

' src=

February 3, 2021 at 7:18 pm

Putting #9 and #10 at the beginning makes no sense! They are about Clark and Marty’s adopted granddaughter. To put them at the beginning before Clark and Marty even meet is illogical!

' src=

May 24, 2021 at 4:18 am

Thank you for clearing that up. It was confusing to have the #9 character have the same name as the #1 character and HIS daughter is also named Missy! NOW it all makes since!! My husband and I love these sweet Christian movies and will be sad to get to the end. I guess all we lack is the Christmas movie. Thank you again!

July 22, 2019 at 3:17 am

It’s listed. It’s number 7. I love the movies. I’ve watched them so many times.

' src=

November 6, 2021 at 11:06 pm

Its number 7 on the list above

' src=

January 4, 2023 at 9:52 am

It’s mentioned earlier. I think #8

September 18, 2012 at 12:29 am

Love's Christmas Journey takes place after Love Finds a Home.

' src=

December 19, 2016 at 10:01 pm

You are correct on that!

November 14, 2012 at 6:19 am

I haven't watched any of these yet because it seemed impossible to figure out the order, and I'm picky that way. Thank you so much for doing this!

November 24, 2012 at 11:37 pm

the order is definitely confusing! I'm not sure the order listed here is correct? Can anyone help? I have 10 DVDs in the series…. now I found Loves Beginning and Love's Christmas Journey…. so… Is Loves Beginning the 1st and not Love Comes Softly?

November 28, 2012 at 11:30 pm

Yes. The order is very confusing. The first three came out last but are actually the first ones in the series. Love's Christmas Journey is first (just came out on DVD about a month ago) then Love Begins and so on.

' src=

March 28, 2016 at 1:30 am

loves christmas journey is not first, as it is about Aaron which is Marty’s son from her first marriage, that she has in love comes softly, so it would most likely be last or around the same time as the last one which is love finds a home.

July 22, 2019 at 3:22 am

It should be after loves abiding joy. I wish Clark and Missy were in the latter movie

' src=

May 20, 2017 at 1:31 am

If you go by the way they came out, the order is: 1.Love comes softly. 2:Loves enduring promise 3:Loves Long journey 4: Loves Abiding Joy 5:Loves unending Legacy. 6:Loves Unfolding Dream 7: Love Takes Wing. 8:Love finds a home 9:Love Begins. 10:Loves Everlasting Courage 11:Loves Christmas Journey. I bought them as they came out in this order.

' src=

September 12, 2021 at 3:38 am

We have watched 2 of these movies and I really liked them, so glad you put them in order for my husband and I. Thanks

November 29, 2012 at 5:05 pm

SO: There are 11 total in the Love Comes Softly Series?

' src=

December 2, 2016 at 4:37 pm

I have just purchased the 10 DVD set of “Love Comes Softly”. Now I want to purchase the “Loves Christmas Journey”. I have fallen in Love with this series ans wish to find out if there is a listing of anymore in this same art of watching and the older ones that take part in this age or Year. I am 89 years of age and I find these type of film to be the finiest ever printed in to film. The younger Generation can learn much from the way of life in those days and what they had to do to get along and it was fun time too. Thank You for any and all information you can give to me. I am late at finding this site and much has gone on before my seeing this site. Please excuse my intelligence on this must wonderful Site. Please keep up your good work for all of us.

August 3, 2017 at 2:13 am

If you watch Love Begins, (1st movie) that is when they introduce Clarke Davis, he ends up marring Ellen, his first wife. Then comes Loves Everlasting Courage. Ellen and Clarke have a daughter Missy. Then the story goes to Love Comes Softly after Clarke lost his wife Ellen, Missy is about 8 when Marty comes into the picture.

February 3, 2021 at 7:26 pm

I totally agree!

March 12, 2013 at 10:46 pm

Thanks for the list. I haven’t seen half of these. Guess I have something to look for.

March 13, 2013 at 4:46 am

Thanks for the list. I haven't seen half of these. Guess I have something to look for.

March 24, 2013 at 12:25 pm

This order is wrong. Movies in a series are meant to be viewed chronologically which is how the writer/director intends it for the audience. It is impossible to look at movies in your order, because while we were viewing Love Comes Softly in 2003, Christmas Journey was not created until a decade later. Christmas Journey has to be viewed last… that is the point of creating what is known as a “prequel”.

March 24, 2013 at 6:03 pm

i love this series! and yes this MUST MUST be watched in order

March 28, 2013 at 6:00 pm

This list is meant for those people who buy the movies and want to watch them in the order that they happened in the character's lives, not production order. If you want to watch them in production order, we have the release date so you can easily figure that out. Thanks for stopping by!

' src=

August 10, 2014 at 3:49 am

Vishwanath Samsundar- Sorry to tell you but this order listed here is correct- They just weren’t produced that way. I’ve watched all of these on numerous occasions and own several.

August 3, 2017 at 2:15 am

Who is Ellie? In the Christmas Journey…I haven’t seen that one yet, but can’t seem to be able to figure out where she fits in?

She was Marty and Clark’s daughter in the books. I like the movies but I am tired of all the husbands dying. They didn’t in the books. Belinda was not adopted but Clark and Marty’s youngest daughter. The movies have changed the family members around and changed story lines. I whole heartedly encourage reading the book series it was my absolute favorite growing up and I made sure I got it on kindle so I know I can read it at any time.

I love these movies Love Comes Softly. Can someone email me the names and order the movies comes in so I can make sure I have them all. My email is [email protected] . Thanks Mary

March 28, 2013 at 12:00 pm

This list is meant for those people who buy the movies and want to watch them in the order that they happened in the character’s lives, not production order. If you want to watch them in production order, we have the release date so you can easily figure that out. Thanks for stopping by!

July 21, 2018 at 12:02 am

Rebecca the list you posted is correct right? I remember watching several of them it went way back to before Missy was born so it was kinda confusing. I love these movies. Will there be any more in the future to add to the Love Saga?

I appreciated your listing all the Janette Oke movies in order! Thanks–these movies have really given me a much needed lift!

November 4, 2013 at 9:38 pm

Love’s Christmas Journey takes place after Love Finds a Home.

November 5, 2013 at 4:38 am

Love's Christmas journey cant be first its about Aaron, Marty's son so how can it be first? Love Begins is first, Love's Christmas journey is or should be last. I am going to keep searching, I have all the movies and would also like to know the order.

January 7, 2014 at 7:55 pm

1.Love Comes Softly is first,2. Love's Enduring Promise, 3.Love's Long Journey,4. Love's Abiding Joy,5. Loves, Unending Legacy,6. Love's Unfolding Dream, 7.Love Takes Wing,8.Love Finds A Home, 9. Love Begins.10. Love's Everlasting Courage, 11. Love's Christmas Journey. I have all of them but the last two. I Love them and watch them often.

I don’t understand how everyone can say that Love comes softly is first…how do you think the whole sequence started.. with Clark Davis and Ellen Barlow..which afterwards they got married and missy was born… now the story goes on after that..

January 7, 2014 at 8:28 pm

Love that series but only have first 3 hint hint my husband

January 8, 2014 at 12:24 am

I have 9 of them.

June 2, 2014 at 2:46 pm

You forgot the last movie Love’s Christmas Journey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love%27s_Christmas_Journey

June 2, 2014 at 8:46 pm

They have the order right except for the first one. Ellie and Aaron are Marty and Clark's kids, so that movie would have to be sometime after Love Comes Softly. These movies have the characters and the timeline all screwed up. The books make more sense. But I still love these movies.

June 15, 2014 at 2:11 am

My daughter and I are reading the books. We just read the movie synopsis that says that Willie dies. My daughter doesn’t even want to watch the movies anymore. Why would they stray that far from the original story line? Then she adopts the girl who is her sister in the books? I do not understand why they made such major changes in the story line. Disappointed 🙁

August 11, 2018 at 2:58 am

I agree. I have researched this for years and this is the way i watch them. If you what them how they came out then you will just get confused!!

May 30, 2015 at 12:15 am

So i’m confused…where is the Christmas one supposed to go in the story?

I just recently purchased Loves Comes Softly, and my mother (91) and I watched it about 5 times, plus. Then I saw 4 other movies from this series and purchased them and now we are watching them. The order is confusing, but when I found your list of the correct order that was so helpful, now I can tell my children what I need from my Christmas list.

I just finish Volume 1 & 2 of the Love Comes Softly series by Janette Oke. I just read a comment from Yvonne Hale from Dec Dec 8th 2015, saying they found 4 more movies from this series. I would really like to find these DVDs. Is there any way I can find out the names and where to find the rest of this series??

Where does ellie come in when did clark and marty have her? Thought the only girl was missy….

' src=

January 10, 2016 at 8:10 pm

You commentators are largely correct on “Loves Christmas Journey”. The story occurs somewhere between “Love Takes Wing” and “Love Finds a Home” but is not directly related to these characters. Aaron Davis and Ellie King in this story are the half-brother and sister of Missie Davis and the natural children of Clark and Marty. The story, like “Love Begins” and “Love’s Everlasting Courage” is not written by Janet Oke. It should appear last in your published order for viewing. Maybe there is confusion over Ellie. She is not the Ellie who marries Clark Davis, but his daughter.

You can date the movies roughly from the 1850’s gold rush (Love Begins) and the dates on the crosses at the start of “Love’s Unending Legacy” (Sonny Huff – 1879, Kathy LaHaye – 1885 – Willie LaHaye – 1886)

I hope this helps

' src=

July 23, 2017 at 11:07 pm

Uh, Aaron is the baby who was born at the end of Love Comes Softly. His father was Aaron, who died, making Marty a widow, who then married Clark. He was an adult in Love’s Christmas Journey in 2011 (8 years after he was born in the 2003 movie! ). Clark and Marty had another son, Arnie, in the second movie. I don’t know who Ellie is, from Love’s Christmas Journey. Maybe Clark and Marty had another daughter after Missy married Willie and they moved away? Is she mentioned in any of the movies when Clark and/or Marty visit or write to Missy? And I always wondered what happened to Ellen’s younger sister, Cassie, after Ellen married Clark in Love Begins. (I’ve seen them all lots of times on Hallmark and TBN!)

July 23, 2017 at 11:12 pm

I meant in the movie made second (2004), Love’s Enduring Promise, not the second chronologically. So confusing!

p.s. I’ve only seen the one where Willie dies two times, several years apart. I don’t like that one.

' src=

February 3, 2016 at 12:47 am

i like all of them ,, i hope she can make more 🙂

March 7, 2016 at 5:03 am

Thanks for the list! Exactly what I wanted.

It made me laugh that you find the last one boring – that’s my very favorite! I think it’s hilarious. I guess I like character development more than exciting plot.

Great series! It makes you want to watch more!

' src=

September 12, 2016 at 2:29 am

Where did Cassie go? I don’t recall her being mentioned.

' src=

February 23, 2017 at 3:51 pm

What happened to Ellen’s sister, Cassie. She is not mentioned in the next movie after Ellen and Clark at wed.

February 23, 2017 at 3:53 pm

I assume Clark Davis had a son also named Clark Davis, but there is no explanation as to how they became separated.

' src=

May 1, 2017 at 12:13 am

everyone who left comments said something different about the order of the movies …so I am still very confused ….

' src=

August 5, 2017 at 12:39 am

I just watched in this order..

Love Comes Softly Loves Enduring Promise Loves Long Journey Loves Abiding Joy Loves Unending Legacy Loves Unfolding Dream (it says The sixth installment) in the description.

I’m gonna watch the other 4 now and see if I can figure out the order. I watch it every time it’s on but they haven’t had all 11 on yet. Unless I missed recording them.

' src=

October 20, 2017 at 3:47 pm

My friend recommended these books to me, so I bought part 1 of the collection (books 1-4) but haven’t read them yet. Just last night I found 3 of the movies in a used book store and snatched them up, but had no idea what order they go. Thanks for this page – it will really help me to know in what order to watch the movies as I track them down!

' src=

April 10, 2018 at 4:41 pm

Here is a couple possible ways that I think the order of the movies go. 1. Love Begins; 2. Love’s Everlasting Courage; 3. Love Comes Softly; 4. Love’s Enduring Promise; 5. Love’s Long Journey; 6. Love’s Abiding Joy; 7. Love’s Unending Legacy; 8. Love’s Christmas Journey; 9. Love’s Unfolding Dream; 10. Love Takes Wing; 11. Love Finds a Home; 1. Love Begins; 2. Love’s Everlasting Courage; 3. Love Comes Softly; 4. Love’s Enduring Promise; 5. Love’s Long Journey; 6. Love’s Abiding Joy; 7. Love’s Unending Legacy; 8. Love’s Unfolding Dream; 9. Love Takes Wing; 10. Love Finds a Home. Then Similar to /Inspired by movies Above is Love’s Christmas Journey. My sisters and I have been trying to figure the exact order of the movies and we have come to the conclusion that maybe Love’s Christmas Journey doesn’t fit into the order of the rest of the movies so it should be watched at a different time then the rest of them. If one of these orders is not correct then I am still very confused. So if someone could let me known what you think that would be great!

' src=

September 18, 2018 at 5:31 pm

Hi there… took me a little while to figure them out as well but I think viewers have a better knowledge of the order than the producers or TV networks. I agree with your second version and that Christmas Journey is not part of the series- Aaron would be a character but his sister was Missy, not Ellie. He was named after his mother’s first husband, & his biological father(Marty was married to Aaron when he died in Comes Softly). I am rewatching all the movies right now and started with Christmas Journey, just finished Long Journey, so the first few are fresh in my mind.

July 24, 2018 at 6:07 pm

Sorry, everyone! I just went through and changed the order of the movies and now I’m pretty sure I have them in the correct order. I got my information from the link at the bottom of the page from Hallmark Channel. They should know the order but I did find they don’t know as much as they should. They forget to include one of the movies. I researched IMDB and found where it fits in. Enjoy the movies!

September 17, 2018 at 7:22 pm

WOW! From the first time I pulled this page up until now, approximately 6 months time span, SOMEONE has changed the “order” of the list of these great movies! You can’t just do that – Love’s Everlasting, the one SOMEONE has changed to #-10 HAS be number ONE because it STARTS the series with Clark and his FIRST wife. My question is, WHERE does Christmas Journey fit in? It’s obviously not the first but not the last either as Aaron, one of the main characters is the baby from Love Comes Softly(named after his deceased father) after Clark remarries but Ellie was not Aaron’s sister, Missy was…. so was this a production error or just an extra movie??? And this also would have meant Missy had remarried a third time from her sheriff husband, had a third child(WHEN DID ALL THIS HAPPEN??!!) YES, I HAVE WATCHED THESE MOVIES A LOT AND AS I AM NOW AN ENGLISH MAJOR, AM VERY INTO PROOFING/EDITING….

September 17, 2018 at 7:42 pm

Oh my! And I have to admit I am wrong…Love Begins HAS to be the first because that’s when Clark and Ellen first meet- then Everlasting Journey, followed by Comes Softly…..then etc etc. I still think Christmas Journey IS NOT part of the series but from the same producers, writers and same storyline.

September 18, 2018 at 5:39 pm

Lots of opinions but I guess when you watch these movies so many times, one would become somewhat of an expert(of what I’m not sure), but seems like I notice something more or different every time I watch. So, it would start with Love Begins, Everlasting Coursge, Comes Softly, Enduring Promise, Long Journey, Abiding Joy, Unending Legacy, Unfolding Dream, Takes Wing, & Finds a Home(all Love, of course). The Christmas Journey is not part of the series but does have some of the same characters, follows a split storyline, etc.. I have to say, these movies have a calming influence on my mind when I’m stressed- glad they came out on DVD!

' src=

September 19, 2018 at 4:19 am

From what I’ve seen, April has the perfect list according to storyline. Even though Love Begins & Love’s Everlasting Courage were produced last (2011), they were written to begin the series. After the 1st two, the rest were produced from 2003 to 2009, except for Love’s Christmas Journey=2012. Clear as mud?? Anyway, very worthwhile TV watching. Yay, Hallmark! PS FYI: Some movies are shown on Hallmark Channel & some on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Do check the guide…

September 20, 2018 at 6:58 pm

And is it just me it seems to me like they like to play some of them a lot and then some of them hardly ever. I’m sure that’s partly because some really aren’t as good as the others . . .

' src=

November 1, 2019 at 1:09 am

So where do you watch the Christmas movie in the series? I am going to binge watch them with my kids but it’s been a while so now I lost track of the order and I just ordered the Xmas dvd that I was missing. I know it’s been a year but I appreciate it. 🙂

September 20, 2018 at 7:00 pm

OK. Check out the list now and see if you think I got it right. I was confused there for a bit. It makes it especially confusing when they use different characters for the same people and they just play them so randomly on Hallmark.

September 20, 2018 at 7:56 pm

AARON DAVIS AND ELLIE KING IN THIS STORY ARE THE HALF-BROTHER AND SISTER OF MISSIE DAVIS AND THE NATURAL CHILDREN OF CLARK AND MARTY. THE STORY, LIKE “LOVE BEGINS” AND “LOVE’S EVERLASTING COURAGE” IS NOT WRITTEN BY JANET OKE. DON’T BE CONFUSED BY ELLIE. SHE IS NOT THE ELLIE WHO MARRIES CLARK DAVIS, BUT HIS DAUGHTER. This is the plot summary for Love’s Christmas Journey… not sure where it came from because if Ellie were really one of Clark & Marty Davis’ natural children, I think she would have shown up in an earlier movie, such as Love’s Unending Legacy OR Love’s Unfolding Dream. Also, Aaron is Marty’s natural child but not Clark’s- Aaron’s father died at the beginning of Love Comes Softly, that’s who he’s named after “Aaron Luke, his father and mine” Marty tells Clark the day he’s born. Marty and Clark do have a son together but his name is Arnie. Ok, this has made me tired and I need a nap… The movies are all good and Hallmark is remiss in playing them all together when they show “marathons”.

' src=

November 4, 2018 at 11:55 pm

read the book series I don’t understand how anyone could get things so messed up. the baby who died was Kathy and she was not clark and marty’s baby but willie and missy’s. also missy is the one who adopted belinda who was the orphan from the train and her brother eventually. yes clark and martie did have two sons. in the love’s enduring promise aaron who is the son from aaron and marty then there is arnie who is the son of clark and marty. in that series they have three children.

' src=

February 27, 2019 at 9:29 pm

Thank you SOOO MUCH, this has been a huge help. I also agree with all of your comments on each mobie, the zingers and not-so zingers in the series but all wonderful movies about strong faith 🙂

March 10, 2019 at 12:03 am

Yep. It’s an awesome series!

December 14, 2019 at 3:56 am

Aaron the son of Marty and Aaron in Love comes Softly, I assumed got married as he has 2 children in loves Christmas Journey. What happened to his wife? and is their courtship and her death addressed in the book series?

' src=

April 23, 2020 at 8:46 pm

What happened to Ellen’s sister Cassie?

' src=

November 12, 2020 at 11:54 am

Sorry, but if you read the books you know that they are in the right order, to begin with, the way the movies were made. As a writer myself I know we sometimes go back after and do a backstory to fill you in like them remembering where certain things happened. It doesn’t make the order wrong with the way the books or movies were made. Think of it as someone coming into your life at one point then later you telling them about your parents’ or grandparents’ lives before you. It doesn’t mean that they should’ve told you about them before you learn about them.

What ever happened to Cassie (Ellen’s sister)?

Dog’s Purpose Books In Order

Publication order of dog's purpose books, publication order of dog's purpose puppy tales books.

A Dog’s Purpose series is a series of novels by American humorist, columnist, and author William Bruce Cameron. While Cameron has written in a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres, A Dog’s Purpose series is his best known and most popular work. The first novel in the series, A Dog’s Purpose was published in 2010 with the fourth one coming out in 2015. The series is a story of love between a canine and its owners as told from the dog’s perspective. The chief protagonist in the novels is a very special puppy, Bailey that Cameron follows on a journey of life. Over the series, the dog dies, and is reincarnated several times while on a quest to find purpose for its life. William Cameron explores the world from the standpoint of a dog, which makes for a humorous yet gripping and fascinating narrative. For instance, at one time Bailey concludes that horses cannot be relied upon and that cats are completely untrustworthy. However, what makes the narrative series so poignant apart from its humor is its portrayal of the innate desires of dogs to please their oldest friends – man. What makes the novels such a popular read for animal lovers is that unlike other animal books, the lead does not die at the end, but rather is reborn as a different type of dog, but now armed with lessons from the previous life.

The concept of having an animal as the lead in a novel is not a new one having been used in works such as Aesop’s fables. In recent times, novels such as Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox and Charlotte’s Web by EB White that tell stories from animals’ perspectives have been highly popular. However, Cameron gives the Dog’s Purpose series of novels a twist by throwing in the aspect of reincarnation of the lead, which over time makes for a character that humans can relate to. While he changes his name from novel to novel, the chief protagonist never loses his consciousness of being the very same dog, Bailey. No matter the type of family, he finds himself in, he lives to discover his life’s purpose. Despite its highly unusual format, the series has received critical acclaim with the first novel topping the New York Times Bestseller list for forty-nine weeks. It has also received rave reviews from renowned sources such as Kirkus Reviews, Marty Becker who is Good Morning America’s resident veterinarian, and Temple Grandin a top expert on animal behavior. In 2011, Dreamworks announced that it will be adapting, the highly popular first novel in the series, A Dog’s Purpose into a movie by the same name. The movie set to be released in 2017 is scripted by William Cameron and stars Dennis Quaid, with Lasse Halstrom in the director’s chair.

Cameron writes an uplifting tale, narratives about redemption, joy, and purpose that come with their fair share of teary scenes of death alternating with happy reincarnations. While full of humor, these are inspiring reads that are a must read for anyone that has ever been loved or loved a dog. According to the author, the idea of a dog being reborn with all of its previous life memories came about when he got into thinking that maybe what people refer to as instinct could be memory. He argues that instinct is actually a hardwired species wide memory that comes from evolution and this may explain why dogs or other animals behave as they do. In scenes full of humor, he describes situations such as the dread of a dog when going to the vet to be neutered or sprayed, or the embarrassment of getting a head cone which. All of these emotions are because of experiences from a previous life. A Dog’s Purpose tells you everything you have ever wanted to know about a dog’s perspective, including how they feel about the family cat, boredom, family relationships, and even food. For the author the novels are about the theme of eternal love and connections we make with our animal friends and other significant people in our lives.

A Dog’s Purpose is the first novel in the series of novels that first introduced the chief protagonist. It is an extraordinary story of an adorable dog as he is on a quest for purpose over his lives. Unlike other dog stories that just explore the love between a dog and his family, this is a novel that asks one of the most important questions that almost all human societies have always asked: What is our purpose? The novel starts with the dog reincarnated as a boisterous golden puppy after coming from a life as a stray mongrel. Bailey has now been born into the family of a young boy named Ethan, an eight-year-old boy who loves him to bits. As he sets out on a new adventure with his new family, Bailey comes to discover that he may have to let go of his mongrel ways, to be the dog that his family wants to be. However, given that he knows that his life as a family pet is not going to last forever, Bailey is wondering if he would ever find his purpose, taking into account the inevitable reincarnations that always seem to present a new purpose. The story is not only insightful and heartwarming, but also a hilarious and emotional commentary of the unbreakable bonds between humans and dogs.

A Dog’s Journey is the sequel to the first novel of the series, A Dog’s Purpose. After several reincarnations, Buddy believes that he has finally fulfilled his purpose in life. Nonetheless, as he gets interested in Clarity the teenage child of the family, he becomes convinced that his purpose is to be her dog, so that he can prevent her from getting into all kinds of mischief. He is exuberant when he is given to Clarity the troubled but vibrant teenager, who he believes would benefit from having him around. When Clarity’s suddenly leaves, Buddy is thrown into a state of despair – who will stop the girl from getting into trouble? A Dog’s Journey is a heartwarming and charming narrative of unending devotion, love, and hope. It is more than just an endearing dog tale, but rather one that asks whether our pets take care of us or we take care of them.

How to Watch the Jesse Stone Movies in Chronological Order and By Release Date

In 10 years, nine Jesse Stone movies were made starring Tom Selleck. Here's how to watch them in chronological order and by release date.

  • Tom Selleck is well-known for his TV work on Blue Bloods but also starred in detective novel adaptations as Jesse Stone.
  • Jesse Stone movies follow the character's journey as a disgraced homicide detective facing corruption in a small town.
  • The Jesse Stone movies are best watched in release date order to follow the character's arc and long-term storytelling.

Even though the actor has had a long and storied career for the past 50-plus years that has included such shows and movies as Magnum P.I and Three Men and a Baby , actor Tom Selleck is well known these days for his TV work on a weekly CBS family cop drama known as Blue Bloods . Along with cast members Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan, this long-running series has captivated primetime fans with its endearing tale of the Reagan family, who are tasked with continuously saving NYC from all sorts of criminal activity. What a lot of modern-day followers of this American actor don’t know is that he also starred in some riveting detective novel adaptations that graced the small screen for about ten years, starting from 2005 all the way to 2015.

Stepping into the role of Jesse Stone , Selleck would become a disgraced homicide detective in LA who has been transferred into the foggy city of Paradise, Massachusetts, and given the rank of police chief. Carrying a drinking problem in one hand and an unhealthy dependence on receiving nightly phone calls from his ex-wife in the other, the burly lead character would quickly come face to face with the corruption that plagues this small town. From going head-to-head with thrill killers and gangsters, Stone had nine small-screen adventures over 10 years, ranging from 2005 to 2015.

While this line of exciting movies is very easy to follow if tracking them by release date, chronological order, on the other hand, needs some explanation. Let’s first take a look at every single Jesse Stone feature and arrange them in a way that would be most suitable for those who want emphasis on long-term storytelling (in a way that the original author Robert B. Parker would be proud of).

Jesse Stone: Night Passage (2006)

If you are looking to prioritize Stone’s character arc above all else, Jesse Stone: Night Passage is the first movie in the Jesse Stone franchise that you need to see. Viewers not only come to learn why the titular character has arrived in the small town of Paradise, Massachusetts but also become acquainted with his sympathetic flaws. Which includes still having daily phone conversations with his ex-wife and slowly stepping into being a functioning alcoholic. Within the 89-minute runtime, Stone becomes entangled in numerous cases that involve domestic abuse, racketeering, and a hint of the mob that is practically running everything behind the scenes. He also becomes involved with a local lawyer. Of course, there is usually a romance angle in every entry.

Stone Cold (2005)

Released before Night Passage , but taking place after the first movie that was released, Stone Cold follows a more set-in-his-ways Jesse Stone, who is no longer surprised at the possible secrets and menacing crimes that this town holds. Suddenly, a series of murders start to occur that all have the same technique of murder surrounding them. Even though the film reveals who the murderers are early on and Stone knows that it’s them as well, the plot revolves around our main police chief figuring out law-abiding ways to catch them and take them down.

Jesse Stone: Death In Paradise (2006)

This third installment, Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise , pits the disgraced Los Angeles police department cop against a more harrowing Boston mob presence, particularly mobster Leo Finn and his muscle, Lovey Norris. With a teenage girl’s body found in a lake at the very start of this 2006 Jesse Stone entry, viewers are then brought to more locales in Paradise than ever before. These include a Catholic shelter, a mobster-owned real estate firm called Development Associates, and the rich home of Norman Shaw, a bestselling writer who uses his wealth and influence in some very wrong ways.

Jesse Stone: Sea Change (2007)

As the overarching storyline of the Jesse Stone franchise is now corresponding with the actual release date of the films, Luther has just now mustered up enough strength to leave the hospital in Jesse Stone: Sea Change . While that is good news, it seems as though the chief of police is not doing too well with his inner demons. His ex-wife is now seeing someone who demands they stop their nightly conversations and thus, Stone is back to drinking — more than ever before. After obtaining some advice from his psychiatrist to distract himself, he sets out to solve a cold case that happened in 1992 regarding a supposedly murdered female bank teller during a robbery.

Even though this entry took a risk and delved more into the emotional turmoil of Tom Selleck’s character, the more perilous storyline risk brought a great reward. Selleck received an Emmy Award nomination for this film, as did Sea Change’s cinematographer Rene Ohashi with a nomination in the movie/miniseries/pilot category by the American Society of Cinematographers.

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice (2009)

Released in 2009, Jesse Stone: Thin Ice is the first of these to not be based on a Robert B. Parker novel, Stone seems to be getting over his hysteria about his ex-wife’s new partner. This doesn’t mean all is well though, as both he and police Captain Healy are shot by an unknown figure while doing an unauthorized stakeout on Healy’s nephew. In order to get to the bottom of why Healy was shot, Stone has to converse with some unsavory characters who are always in tense situations themselves. While there is a conclusion, the ending of Thin Ice proves that the heroes don’t always get the justice they want .

Jesse Stone: No Remorse (2010)

Jesse Stone: No Remorse finally pits Tom Selleck’s Jesse Stone against a character that has been in the franchise for a few movies now but never given the lead antagonistic role, and that is William Sadler’s Gino Fish. The now-suspended police chief has to resort to moonlighting due to his conflict with the town council from Thin Ice . Stone’s pursuit of Gino puts the mob boss’s reputation in the underworld at stake and this makes for a very tense situation for the two throughout the entire 87-minute movie. Since his ex-wife has now found someone else and has abandoned her calls to him, he’s not only fighting against the devious criminals of Paradise but also a returning bout of alcoholism and his weakness for the opposite sex. Jesse Stone: Innocents Lost (2011)

Released in 2011 and one of the longer Jesse Stone movies (an hour and a half), Jesse Stone: Innocents Lost goes even deeper into his downhill slide as the town council in Paradise actually brings someone in to take over his position as chief of police. As much as this film in the small screen detective series was well received by fans, there was more of an inner arc to Innocents Lost as his personal problems (longing for his ex-wife, Fish still chasing after him, and, of course, the drinking) possibly overshadow the two featured investigations in this movie: a friend of his that has gone missing and collaborating independently with the Massachusetts homicide division about a fatal robbery case.

Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt

In Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt , Stone has to step out from the shadows when the person who had replaced him in Innocents Lost was killed in a malicious car explosion. Even though the new chief was given the position only because he was the son-in-law of the town president, Stone steps up at this crucial low point in Paradise’s history. The funny thing is, Viola Davis and Kohl Sudduth’s characters left after Stone was dismissed, so he must go at this case alone.

Even though this movie has a slower pace than most modern-day crime fans are used to, Stone also takes one more crucial step to the truth, since it is revealed that Fish is not at the top of the food chain. There seems to be an enigmatic mastermind who is pulling all the strings (and who ordered the car to blow up).

Jesse Stone: Lost In Paradise (2015)

Released on October 18th, 2015, Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise is the ninth and final (for now) Jesse Stone movie. With the conclusion of the last movie finally setting Stone on the right path, he once again finds himself in a dangerous investigation that is puzzling the police in Boston. A serial killer (played by Luke Perry) has admitted to fatally wounding and dismembering three prior victims, but not a new body that has popped up. With a case of morals plaguing his mind, Stone believes the man behind bars and goes about solving a suitably crazy whodunit.

Every single planet of the apes movie (in chronological order).

The Planet of the Apes timeline is a bit confusing, so we arranged them in their proper chronological order

  • The Planet of the Apes movies have a complex timeline that spans from the original 1968 film to the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in 2024.
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) is the first film in the modern reboot trilogy, and the first movie chronologically.
  • 1968's Planet of the Apes arrives in the middle of the franchise's timeline, despite being the first movie released.

From the original Charlton Heston films to the modern prequels, the Planet of the Apes movies have a complex timeline — one made even more intricate by an ill-fated 2001 Tim Burton project and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes . Based on the novel by French author Pierre Boulle titled Le Planete des singes , the original 1968 Planet of the Apes ranks among the most iconic science fiction films of all time. Across several sequels and reboots, the Planet of the Apes movies have built a continual timeline, though the chronological order doesn't match the order of release.

There are nine Planet of the Apes movies in the timeline so far, with the tenth, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes , arriving in 2024 . The original Planet of the Apes movies told the story of a future Earth where apes are civilized and humans devolved into a feral state. However, the 2011 reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes went back in time to show how apes became the dominant species. Th e Planet of the Apes movies in chronological order journey from apocalyptic virus survival action to conceptual sci-fi, covering several decades of filmmaking.

Planet Of The Apes: All Movie Timelines Explained

Rise of the planet of the apes (2011), caesar leads a rebellion, rise of the planet of the apes.

The first film of the rebooted trilogy is the first of the Planet of the Apes movies in order based on the history of its timeline. Rise gave a unique spin on the Planet of the Apes movie series as it focuses on an ape named Caesar who, after having his intelligence augmented through science experiments, leads an ape rebellion while releasing a virus that brings humanity to its knees.

Critics gave the film positive reviews, praising the performances and screenplay, while the movie got an Oscar nomination for its visual effects.

One of the greatest aspects of this trilogy that started in Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the motion capture technology for Andy Serkis to play the protagonist, Caesar , creating a digital character who felt easy to connect with emotionally and lead the story without relying on the human characters. Critics gave the film positive reviews, praising the performances and screenplay, while the movie got an Oscar nomination for its visual effects.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is available to stream on Hulu.

6 Biggest Differences Between Planet Of The Apes' Reboot Timeline & The Original Movies

Dawn of the planet of the apes (2014), the uneasy coexistence between apes and the remaining humans, dawn of the planet of the apes.

2014's sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is the next movie chronologically in the Planet of the Apes timeline. The motion capture technology also continued to improve. While the apes may not have been exactly lifelike, their performances felt real, which was essential as the human characters became less of the focus in this world.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set 10 years after the outbreak of Simian Flu. The human population has been decimated since only 1 in 500 are immune. This sequel showed the ape population continuing to grow more organized and self-aware , while the human population drew closer to extinction. Matt Reeves stepped into the director's chair for the sequel and delivered an action-packed movie with emotional nuance that pushed the franchise forward.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is available to stream on Hulu and Max.

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

Humanity's last stand against the apes, war for the planet of the apes.

The final film in the rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy was regarded by some as the best of the franchise. This film's absolute mastery helped cement Matt Reeves' Planet of the Apes movies as one of the greatest trilogies in both the sci-fi genre and in film history. Serkis continues to impress with his motion-capture portrayal of Caesar as a burdened leader and Moses figure, leading to a campaign to make him the first actor nominated for an Oscar in a motion-capture role.

It served as a poignant and exciting end to the story of Caesar while also seeing the end of humankind's time as the dominant species on the planet.

While Serkis's work didn't get the award recognition some were hoping for, it served as a poignant and exciting end to the story of Caesar while also seeing the end of humankind's time as the dominant species on the planet. There is also less of a time jump between War for the Planet of the Apes and the previous movie, with only two years passing since the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, as opposed to the decade that passed between the first and second films in the trilogy.

War for the Planet of the Apes is available to stream on Hulu and Max.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)

The ape population is divided after caesar, kingdom of the planet of the apes.

In 2024, Matt Reeves' Planet of the Apes franchise gets a sequel in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes . The movie moves into the future, with The Maze Runner director Wes Ball replacing Reeves behind the camera. The lead character also changes to Noa (Owen Teague), an ape living generations after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes . Noa will be fleeing a new tyrannical leader who is perverting the teachings of Caesar .

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes also sees humans reverting to a more feral state while the apes have split up into different clans across the oasis, placing this right before the original franchise when watching the Planet of the Apes movies in timeline order. Of all the modern Planet of the Apes so far, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the first one where earth is starting to resemble the future Charlton Heston's George Taylor arrives at in the 1968 original.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on May 24, 2024

Planet of the Apes (2001)

The ill-fated remake of the 1968 original.

The Tim Burton-directed reboot of the Planet of the Apes movies had a lot of hype going into it. However, this Mark Wahlberg-starring film was a critical disaster with many calling it the worst of the franchise. Although many technical aspects such as the makeup of the apes received praise, critics complained that the actual storytelling of this movie was left wanting.

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes had a unique and clever ending twist that did a great job of living up to the original without copying it. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to save this movie, and it ended any chance of further movies for a full decade. To date, it remains the only Planet of the Apes movie set outside of the official timeline and can be skipped when watching in chronological order.

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is available to stream on Hulu.

Why Tim Burton's Planet Of The Apes Never Got A Sequel

Planet of the apes (1968), the strange planet ruled by humans is discovered by an outsider, planet of the apes (1968).

In the original Planet of the Apes movie, released in 1968, Charlton Heston stars as astronaut George Taylor, who lands on a strange planet. Taylor is horrified to find out that this planet is actually ruled by an extremely intelligent race of apes. Humans, on the other hand, have a seriously diminished mental capacity and simply serve as animals and pets of their ape overlords. While this was the first movie made in the franchise, it took place later in the Planet of the Apes' timeline.

The iconic Planet of the Apes twist ending revealing that Taylor was not on an alien planet, but rather a post-apocalyptic Earth, set up the franchise

The iconic Planet of the Apes twist ending revealing that Taylor was not on an alien planet, but rather a post-apocalyptic Earth, set up the franchise to later explore how the world became ruled by apes. This film won several impressive awards, including winning an honorary Oscar for outstanding makeup achievement. The Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry in 2001.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)

An astronaut explores the planet to find his missing colleagues, beneath the planet of the apes.

The follow-up to the original 1968 classic was 1970's Beneath the Planet of the Apes . Compared to the original, Beneath the Planet of the Apes did not come close to achieving the same level of success or cultural impact. Starring James Franciscus with Charlton Heston returning in a supporting role, it failed to capture what the first film was all about. The movie is a direct sequel to the original with it focusing on another spacecraft arriving and going in search of Taylor (Heston).

Although it was a success at the box office, Beneath the Planet of the Apes was lambasted by critics. Many of the sequel's detractors described it as childish and lacking the interesting storytelling of the original. However, its success was key to the franchise continuing on and building on the timeline.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)

Apes time-travel to explore the history of their planet.

The third movie of the franchise released in as many years, Escape from the Planet of the Apes was the most critically acclaimed of the original Planet of the Apes movies outside the initial 1968 film. While the original movie showed Taylor traveling from the present to the eponymous Planet of the Apes, in this movie the characters Cornelius and Zira used his spaceship to travel back in time to 1973.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes did the job better than any of the other original sequels of replicating what made the original so well received

Escape from the Planet of the Apes did the job better than any of the other original sequels of replicating what made the original so well received, despite the fact it arguably switched up the formula the most. Reversing the situation by sending the apes to the past was a clever twist that kept the franchise interesting . This time travel also meant that part of the movie was actually earlier in the Planet of the Apes timeline than the two previous movies.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

The first version of caesar's rebellion, conquest of the planet of the apes.

The third sequel to the original movie, 1972's Conquest of the Planet of the Apes , shows the rise of Caesar, who is a sort of mythological figure and savior who is said to bring about the actual Planet of the Apes. In this new world of 1991, a space-borne illness wiped out cats and dogs, leading to apes becoming humans' new pets of choice. Hoping to begin a movement and lead a revolution to free the apes, Caesar frees numerous apes and begins a plan to free more.

It's an intriguing entry in the Planet of the Apes franchise, serving as a prequel to the 1968 original while also introducing multiple new concepts of its own. While Conquest of the Planet of the Apes was quite original in its story, it was very average in its execution. It had minimal critical or box office success. The retelling of Caesar's rebellion in the later movies helped to make him a more iconic character.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' New Ruler Is Caesar's Worst Nightmare

Battle for the planet of the apes (1973), caesar seeks a peace with humans, battle for the planet of the apes.

The final film when watching the Planet of the Apes movies in chronological order, 1973's Battle for the Planet of the Apes, showed Caesar and his forces finally winning their freedom. Humanity has been all-but-destroyed by nuclear war, and the impact this has had on the planet creates a situation of scarcity. However, ape's reign supreme and have enslaved the remaining humans. Toward the end of the movie, Caesar decides to end the vicious cycle and spare the humans. Instead, the two races live together as equals.

The poor reception of the movie would end the franchise for several decades until it was attempted to be revitalized with the 2001 remake.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes was the lowest-grossing film in the entire series . Acclaimed film critic Roger Ebert described the film as " the last gasp of a dying series ." Indeed, the poor reception of the movie would end the franchise for several decades until it was attempted to be revitalized with the 2001 remake.

Darth Maul's New Series Begins (And It's Pure Nightmare Fuel)

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1

  • Darth Maul faces a powerful Force cult, the Final Occultation, in the new Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1.
  • The cult's chaotic dark magic poses a threat even to the Dark Lords of the Sith.
  • This issue introduces a subtle rift forms between Maul and Sidious due to their opposing perspectives over this horrifying Force cult.

Darth Maul's new Star Wars series has officially kicked off with a horror-filled nightmare fest of a first issue. Starring the popular Sith apprentice of Darth Sidious, Darth Maul: Black, White & Red is the next anthology series set in the galaxy far, far away following Marvel's epic Darth Vader series which was released at the beginning of 2024. Now, the first issue of this new Darth Maul series has been released just ahead of The Phantom Menace's 25th anniversary.

Coming from Marvel Comics, Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 from Benjamin Percy and Stefano Raffaele. Set before the events of the Phantom Menace and the start of the Skywalker saga, Darth Sidious sends his Sith apprentice on a never-before-seen mission, one that pits Maul against a dangerous Force cult known as the Final Occultation , wielding powers that threaten the Sith Lords themselves. Hailing their power as chaotic and incorporeal dark magic, Darth Sidious sends Maul to a derelict prison ship where thousands of anguished and pained screams are being transmitted .

Willingly putting himself directly in the sights of the Final Occultation, Darth Maul certainly gets more than he bargained for once he makes it to the ship and witnesses their power first-hand in Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 .

Star Wars Movies In Order: How To Watch Release Order, Chronologically & With The TV Shows

Darth maul's new series begins with darth side nightmares, the final occultation.

Essentially, all bets are off once Darth Maul is aboard this overrun prison ship. Facing each member of the leading Trinity of the Final Occultation, Maul's mind increasingly falls more at risk of being torn apart by nightmares and terror-filled madness . While the Sith use the dark side of the Force in the name of order to control and subjugate others, the Final Occultation is pure chaos. The issue confirms that the cult draws upon the netherworld of the Force with extremely volatile powers, seeking only discord.

With unsurprising heresy, Darth Sidious finds the chaos of the Final Occultation fascinating, wanting one of these leaders to be captured and interrogated to learn more about their power. However, Maul correctly deduces that this Force cult is in direct opposition to the tenets and beliefs of the Sith themselves. As such, this first issue confirms a subtle rift between the Sith master and his apprentice due to their opposing perspectives which culminate at the issue's end.

Darth Mau's First Issue Confirms There Are Worse Things Than The Sith

At least the sith seek order through the darkness.

On the whole, it's quite surprising to be introduced to a Force cult in the Star Wars canon that seems to have been even more dangerous and bad for the galaxy than the Sith Lords. While Sidious/Palpatine eventually brings forth an oppressive Galactic Empire as seen in the original trilogy, at least there was a structure of order to be had (and was certainly enforced). In contrast, the Final Occultation wanted nothing more than absolute pain and pure chaos with anarchy spreading across the entire universe.

This issue proves there are absolutely far worse beings in the Star Wars galaxy than the Dark Lords of the Sith.

With that in mind, Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 is an incredibly dynamic first issue for this new series , providing a unique story from Percy while also offering stunning blood-red and nightmare-fueled artwork by Raffaele. Working simultaneously, this issue proves there are absolutely far worse beings in the Star Wars galaxy than the Dark Lords of the Sith.

Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
