What’s behind the Taylor Swift friendship bracelets trend?

The Eras tour is about to hit Australia and Swifties are busy making bracelets to swap with each other at live shows – so what’s fuelling this craze?

If there is one thing that has become synonymous with Taylor Swift and her sold-out Eras tour, it would be friendship bracelets.

Seen as a nostalgic trend of the past in many ways, friendship bracelets have well and truly made a comeback thanks to Swift. Fans are making dozens – even hundreds – of them to swap with fellow Swifties at live shows.

So how did this trend start and why are fans so obsessed?

What are friendship bracelets?

In case you’ve never been a 12-year-old girl at a sleepover party, here are the basics: the bracelets are made using braided material or beads and shared with a close friend.

Some sources suggest they can be traced back to the Indigenous communities of Central and South America. Macrame friendship bracelets became common among hippies in the 1970s, and in the 90s and early 2000s, it was popular for schoolchildren to use “scoubidou” to create bracelets in a variety of knotted patterns, traded across the playground.

What are Taylor Swift fans making?

Friendship bracelets swapped at the Eras tour are typically made of beads, using a variety of colours and spelling out different words and catchphrases. It might be song lyrics, titles or fandom inside jokes.

The internet is flooded with tutorials on how to make your own friendship bracelets for the tour and fans are sharing their creations all over TikTok, racking up millions of views.

It’s not uncommon for friendship groups to catch up before a show to create bracelets together and there are even Facebook groups dedicated to swapping crafting tips and outfit ideas.

Why are fans making and swapping them?

It is impossible to link this trend back to any particular Swiftie, but we do know where the idea came from – Swift’s song You’re on Your Own, Kid from her album Midnights .

The lyrics in the song are, “So, make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it.”

When did this trend start?

Midnights was released in October 2022, and when the Eras tour – chronicling Swift’s entire musical career – was announced just weeks later, some fans suggested they make friendship bracelets to swap with each other at the show. And thus, a worldwide trend was born.

Are beads really selling out?

There have been reports of craft stores completely selling out of beads, as well as a “ great bead shortage ” in Brisbane. The bead stores Guardian Australia spoke to in Brisbane hadn’t sold out quite yet, but said there had been an extraordinary uptick in sales since the Australian leg of the tour was announced last June. Swift’s Australian tour kicks off in Melbourne on 16 February.

Bead, Trimming and Co offers wholesale beads in bulk. Manager Paul Georgiou has seen huge demand in the past for dance concerts and movie costuming but said the Eras tour has been unique.

“Taylor Swift is her own economy,” he joked, having sold more than 20,000 individual bracelets since the Australian tour was announced.

Finance service Klarna recorded a 915% increase in the purchase of friendship bracelet kits last September, and new data from eBay shows a 15,200% increase in sales for friendship bracelets.

A cottage industry of Swift-themed bracelets has also emerged, with people selling their handmade wares through Instagram and Etsy.

Has the trend spread beyond Taylor Swift?

The short answer: yes.

While the resurgence of friendship bracelets can definitely be linked to the Eras tour, the trend has taken on a life of its own. What was once seen as a crafting activity for children has well and truly been reclaimed by Gen Z’ers and millennials. People have also been spotted handing the bracelets to other celebrities.

A video of the Brisbane Broncos being given individual friendship bracelets went viral on TikTok last month, and former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson was given a friendship bracelet outside the Australian Open last month.

The inescapable romance between Swift and Kansas City Chiefs NFL player Travis Kelce even started with a bracelet. Kelce had made a friendship bracelet with his phone number, hoping to shoot his shot at one of her shows. While he didn’t get the chance to give it to her, the rest is history, with the pair now officially dating.

What is behind the huge appeal?

As for why it’s taken off, it could be due to Gen Z’s apparent love of nostalgic 2000s trends. Another factor might be that it’s fostered a genuine sense of in-person community outside the online world and the chance to make new friends. And for those Swifties who have been there since day one, it gives them a chance to pass on an old hobby to their children, bonding over craft and a shared love of music.

Taylor Swift encouraged fans to “make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it” in her Midnights track, “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” and Swifties did just that.

Trading colorful, beaded friendship bracelets has officially become a fun activity for attendees of Swift’s sweeping Eras stadium tour, with fans taking to social media to show off their arms full of fun bracelets that make references to various Swift songs, album eras, inside jokes among fans and lyrics.

While how the trend started seems to be in direct reference to the lyrics of Swift’s Midnights track, the multi-Grammy winner also shared an arm full of friendship bracelets  to Instagram in 2019, leading up to the release of her  Lover  album. Her bracelets included references to her love of cats (including her youngest feline Benjamin Button), her 2008 album Fearless , support for the LGBTQIA+ community and, of course, Lover .

The trend has become so widespread just two months into the tour, that even celebrities have been joining in on the fun. Everyone from Sabrina Carpenter, Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Lawrence to Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Aaron Dessner and even Swift herself have been spotted accepting friendship bracelets from Swifties, and have even taken to social media to show off their colorful arm candy.

Why are Swifties trading friendship bracelets? Inside the nostalgic trend

For most people, the last time they tried to thread craft beads onto plastic string was at summer camp. Swifties have changed that.

Beaded friendship bracelets are now a ubiquitous sighting at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour shows, sported by fans and celebrities alike during, and often after, the concert.

In a trend reminiscent of childhood toy swaps, fans trade bracelets with each other at shows, and many Swifties have displayed bracelet collections that stretch all the way from their wrists to their elbows.

Here's everything you need to know about the Eras Tour friendship bracelet trend and how it began.

Where did the Taylor Swift bracelet trend come from?

The friendship bracelet trend among Swifties is inspired by lyrics from a song on Swift's 2022 album "Midnights."

"So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it," Swift sang in her nostalgic anthem "You're On Your Own, Kid."

Her fans took that suggestion very seriously.

Friendship bracelets have been a key element of the Eras Tour since the first few shows, says Gabby Deimeke, a longtime Swiftie.

Deimeke, who has been a fan of Swift since her very first album, attended the Arlington, Texas, Eras Tour concert in April.

A few weeks before the show, she saw videos on TikTok of other Swifties making beaded friendship bracelets to wear to the Eras Tour.

Many fans spelled out words, lyrics, album titles or phrases on the bracelets, such as the names of Swift's cats (Meredith, Olivia and Benjamin) or memes associated with Swift ("no it's becky").

Deimeke began making bracelets to wear and share at the show and chronicled her process on TikTok. She estimates that at the time of the concert, she had made around 50 bracelets.

"I wanted to make extras because I wanted to just give them away for people that didn’t have any bracelets," she says.

She bonded with other fans over their bracelet collections.

"When we were waiting in line to go in, I started chatting with people," Deimeke says. "Everyone was wearing them on their wrist, so then you’re like, 'Oh, you want to trade? Which ones do you have? What eras do you like?' And then you kind of pick out a personal bracelet depending on if they have a favorite song or a favorite era from Taylor."

"It’s also a good way to just start a conversation, so you can meet other fans and chat about where you guys are from, or what song you’re excited to see," she continues. "I just thought it was a blast."

She shared a video on TikTok of the bracelet trading scene at the concert.

After the show, Deimeke still had leftover bracelets, so she began trading bracelets by mail with other fans. For her, trading bracelets with other fans was an important part of her concert experience.

"I would say go for it," she says. "Put a couple of fun, little phrases on there. And just be open minded and go meet new people and see what the experience brings."

"It’s a great way to have that icebreaker and have a conversation starter to meet new people."

Even celebrities are trading bracelets

Swift's close friend Selena Gomez collected a stack of beaded bracelets on her wrist after attending the Eras Tour show in Los Angeles.

The singer and actress posted a pic of her bracelets on her Instagram story.

"Thank you to the fans that traded with me," she wrote over the photo.

Jennifer Lawrence was seen in a video at the Philadelphia Eras Tour concert accepting bracelets from Swift's fans. The actress was already sporting several bracelets on both wrists, but immediately added her new ones.

Jennifer Garner showed off two massive stacks of bracelets on the second slide of her sweet Instagram tribute to Swift and opener Gracie Abrams.

The actress praised Swift's "generosity of spirit, ferocity and stamina" and gave a shoutout in the caption to "everyone who stopped by to bring a bracelet and say hello."

To Deimeke, the bracelets represent Swift’s ethos.

“The whole Eras Tour has this element of nostalgia and girlhood,” she says. “Making the bracelets is just like a celebration of that, and a celebration of us getting older, and kind of going through that as Taylor has gotten older and made new albums for different phases of your life. I think that’s kind of what the record and what the bracelets are a representation of.”

At the concert, Swifties will swap them with each other, holding onto the bracelets that reference the era they most identify with. 

The most important thing to note is that while you can bring them into the Australian concerts, you have to wear them. This means you can’t bring them in on a carabiner or D-ring.

Celebs are now in on the trend inspired by Swift’s song “You’re On Your Own, Kid” from Midnights.

Aside from Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour merch (especially that blue crewneck sweater), there’s something special that fans are taking home from each tour stop as souvenirs: friendship bracelets. Swifties are making friendship bracelets by hand and meeting up at the Eras Tour to trade them with each other. Even stars like Jennifer Lawrence accepted the wrist gifts from fans at Swift’s May 14 show in Philadelphia.

The inspiration for this bracelt-giving trend came from one of Swift’s songs. In “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” which is Track 5 on Midnights , Swift sings the lyric, “So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it,” during the bridge. A collection of Swift’s friendship bracelets also appeared on her Instagram in 2019, leading up to the release of her Lover album. Swifties took the singer’s advice to heart and have used the Eras Tour concerts to exchange them, meeting fans they’ve been interacting with online at the merch stands or on the floor.

But fans aren’t the only people who love the sentimental trend. Swifties have given bracelets to stars who have been spotted in the VIP tent at the Eras Tour, including Lawrence, Nicole Kidman, her husband Keith Urban, and Heartstopper star Joe Locke. Before Swift hit the stage on May 14 show, Lawrence and Kidman interacted with fans and accepted their friendship bracelets, which they continued sporting during the show. Locke got his bracelets at the April 30 show in Atlanta.

Swifties are proudly documenting their bracelet-making process on Twitter leading up to the shows they’ll be attending, even showcasing the difficulties of crafting dozens of DIY accessories. Swift’s song titles, lyrics, and of course, her lucky number 13, are the most popular decorations, with fans also using the color of each era to make special album-themed bracelets. Some fans are even using Swift’s funniest quotes or viral moments, like when she yelled at a security guard at her May 13 show, as inspiration for their bracelets.

There’s also memes about the trend, because Swifties are self-aware about their tendencies to be extra.

If you’d like your own friendship bracelets, you’ll have to make them first in order to trade them. Many TikTokers have made DIY videos with detailed instructions to make the process a breeze, but if you’re on a time crunch or just feeling especially lazy, Swifties are also selling their own handmade bracelets on Etsy .

For those who don’t want to spend hours (many, many hours) standing in line for official merch, the bracelets make for a nice and affordable keepsake from one of the biggest tour’s of the year (of all time?).

“By the time I got to the merchandise, there was nothing left in my size,” said one Eras Tour attendee, “but it’s almost nicer that I get to take home an arm full of handmade bracelets from the friends I’ve made tonight.”

Along with fans, security guards, cashiers, bartenders and other venue staff are racking up quite the collection of bracelets. It’s not uncommon for most security guards to have both arms completely full — up to the elbows — with crafts given to them by friendly fans.

“It’s a nice way for us all to be connected,” said the Eras Tour attendee. “It’s great to see the staff get into it and for everyone to have a good time bonding over their love for Taylor Swift.”

There’s no official rules when it comes to trading your Taylor Swift friendship bracelets. You simple make (or buy—there are lots of options on Etsy) friendship bracelets. Wear them to the Eras Tour concert you’re attending, trade ’em with other Swifties or gift the bracelets to people without bracelets. The aim of the game is to collect as many as you can and walk out with your wrists covered in Eras-themed friendship bracelets.

The hidden reason behind Taylor Swift fans trading friendships bracelets at the Eras tour

B efore Taylor Swift ’s US Eras tour came to a close, fans had travelled all across the country to see her in her element. However, prior to making their way to the jam-packed stadiums, Swifties have spent hours working on one key element of the concerts: Friendship bracelets.

Long before Swift’s concert tickets went on sale, fans were already gearing up for the event, with Ticketmaster shutting down entirely due to the overwhelming number of people buying tickets in November. After a brief hiatus, the Eras Tour will continue on 24 August with the start of Swift’s International Tour , which will last until the end of 2024. She’ll also be making a few stops in the US and Canada next year, with shows ranging from 18 October to 23 November 2024.

However, if you’re a fellow Swiftie like me, the ongoing anticipation surrounding the Eras tour is no surprise, since this is Swift’s first tour since 2018.

Ahead of the official start of the US tour on 16 March 2023 in Glendale, Arizona, and as a testament to their love for Taylor and her community of Swifties, the singer’s fans began to make friendship bracelets.

The trend ties back to the Swift song “You’re On Your Own, Kid” from the singer’s 2022 album, Midnights . In the beloved bridge of the tune, the lyrics read: “Everything you lose is a step you take / So make the friendship bracelets / Take the moment and taste it.” Swifties took the Grammy Award winner’s advice literally, with friendship bracelets becoming a staple of the Eras tour.

While there is no concrete rule for what these bracelets should look like, fans typically opt for ceramic, lettered or coloured beads when crafting them. On par with the trend, the bracelets usually feature references to Swift’s albums. For example, when I attended an Eras tour concert in Nashville, Tennessee in May, I made a bracelet that read “Begin Again,” a reference to the title of a song off Swift’s album, Red . The letters were surrounded by bright red and maroon-coloured beads to fit the theme of the album. The bracelet-making activity, which brings up memories of camp, was so enjoyable that I also arrived at the concert with bracelets that read “Cornelia Street,” “Love Story,” and “Midnight Rain” in tow.

As for what you’re meant to do with the bracelets, fans have taken to social media to encourage others to trade the beaded accessories.

Gaby, who goes by the username @gabydeimeke on TikTok, shared a video from the concert she attended at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in April. As she stood on the floor of the stadium, she documented a group of Swifties who were looking through a jumble of friendship bracelets held inside clear plastic bags. The strangers then proceeded to exchange some laughs, before deciding which bracelets they’d take to wear on their wrists. The clip ended with Gaby showcasing her own pile of bracelets she’d taken home that night.

Multiple celebrities have hopped on the trend trend as well. When Jennifer Lawrence was spotted at the VIP section of an Eras tour concert in Philadelphia, she didn’t hesitate to wave and smile at fans. While in her section, fans reached their arms towards Lawrence and handed her bracelets, which she happily accepted and placed around her wrist. Fans also tweeted photos of Nicole Kidman putting a friendship bracelet of her own on when she attended a Philadelphia concert with her husband, Keith Urban.

In addition, the star of the show herself has taken part in the viral trend. During every concert, one lucky fan has the opportunity to stand in front of the stage as Swift gives them her black hat while singing the tune “22”. During her show in Arlington, her best friend Selena Gomez’s little sister, Gracie, had this chance. And of course, when Swift gave her the hat, Gracie gave her something in return: a friendship bracelet .

Despite how much Swifties are loving the bracelet-trading trend, they aren’t the ones who originated the idea. On TikTok, a woman named Liz, @blushliz, explained in a March video how she’d made her Eras tour friendship bracelets with fabric string instead of plastic string. After going viral, she acknowledged that the craft ties back to trading “Kandi,” which refers to the colourful, beaded, bracelets that concert-goers exchange at EDM concerts and raves.

“The EDM community has been doing this forever,” Liz explained in her follow-up video . “So I feel like the Swifties, we’re getting a lot of credit for coming up with this idea right now. We didn’t come up with this idea. But, isn’t it cool to think that opposite ends of the spectrum have crafting, and this is something in common that we can all get excited about together.”

According to EDM Identity , a site is dedicated to electric dance and music culture across the country, trading bracelets is to show PLURR (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect, and Responsibility) at raves. In addition, ravers often embody the concept with handshakes before trading “Kandi”. Typically, the trading is done to help ravers form a connection with one another, or to solidify a newly formed connection.

When it came to bracelet trading at the Eras tour, I was mostly on the lookout for a younger concert-goer, as I was desperate to give away the “Begin Again” bracelet that I’d accidentally made too small. Luckily, I identified the perfect guest before the music had even begun, and for that brief, five-minute period of time my friends and I spent with her family, we were all besties.

The trend continued as the night went on. A concert-goer who appeared to be in her 20s gave me a black and green bracelet with beads that spelled out “ivy,” which is the title of a song from Swift’s 2020 album, Evermore . The entire interaction probably lasted 30 seconds, but we still managed to exchange numerous compliments about each other’s outfits in that time.

To my surprise, trading bracelets also led to a 45-minute conversation with another stranger, a mother from the East Coast who I found myself next to on the never-ending line for Eras tour merch. We both went off on tangents about travelling to Tennessee and the hell we went through buying tickets to the concert.

We went our separate ways when the line finally ended, at which point I walked away with a new prized posession, the “Getaway Car” bracelet that she’d given me, which was made by her daughter.

Although I’ll likely never cross paths with these Swifties again, for a five-hour moment in time, Taylor Swift and her community of fans managed to turn an overcrowded space of thousands of strangers into the best of friends.

So, what do you put on a Taylor Swift friendship bracelet? I gathered my Swiftie friends in a group chat and asked what their Eras Tour bracelets said to get some ideas. While there were plenty of eras, album titles, song lyrics, and concert dates, everyone's favorites featured inside jokes and Easter eggs for fellow Swifties to solve. " Taylor's Version," "Mother is mothering," and "$#%$ Scooter Braun " were among the dozens of beaded Taylor Swift bracelets they collected over the summer. And, they expected to see red and gold Travis Swift and Taylor Kelce bracelets start making an appearance this fall.

It’s been a long time coming, but Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is finally here. Now that you’ve settled on your concert ‘fit, you might be wondering what essentials you should bring to the Eras Tour The Eras Tour is like a mini Swift-themed music festival, and you want to be prepared for anything and everything that may happen on the day of your show.

Actually, Austin Ashburn ( @austinashburn4 ) who attended the second night of The Eras Tour in Glendale told Elite Daily that from start to finish, the show is “around five hours long.” That’s “not even including the car rides and line waits.” You’ll want to be prepared for a full-day adventure with everything you need in your bag. Speaking of which, most stadiums have very strict bag policies. Finding the right purse or backpack to match your Eras outfit is essential, but you want to make sure it’s actually one you can bring into the venue and get past security.

To help with packing for the Eras Tour, here’s everything you may want to bring to the Taylor Swift concert. There are even a few items you never would have thought to include on this list.

Ashburn said the biggest Eras Tour essential is a portable phone charger. Even if you charge it beforehand, it may not last the entire day. Swift’s set is over three hours long, but you also have two opening acts and merch lines to wait in. If you’re using your phone the entire time, you’ll be draining your battery.

This is definitely something you may not be thinking to include in your bag, but Ashburn recommends bringing sunglasses. He argued that “most of the shows are taking place in the summertime,” and said he regretted not bringing them to the Glendale show.

Many Swifties are raving about Loop earplugs on TikTok after wearing them at the first two shows of the Eras Tour. TikToker @__e.rxn said she “1000% needed” them for the show. They not only helped to protect her ears from the loud music and fans screaming, but they also helped with her anxiety walking through the large crowds in the stadium.

To make sure your credit cards are safe in your clear bag, it’s a good idea to get a small wallet. If you’re going bagless, a cute Eras Tour card holder to attach to your phone is a stylish idea.

If you happen to be a Capital One member, be sure to put your credit card in your wallet as well. One Swiftie, Lauren ( @laurennnp ), got upgraded to floor seats the day of the show by taking a video at one of the stadium’s Capital One booths, which had the elevator from the Taylor Swift Capital One commercial . Different stadiums have different policies, so definitely look into it beforehand. For example, the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles allows empty reusable water bottles. If your venue is also cool with bottles, you might want to get something collapsible that can easily fit in your clear bag.

Lauren also argued that Chapstick is an essential item to throw into your Eras Tour bag. After all, you definitely don’t want to have chapped lips while trying to sing all 10 minutes of “All Too Well.” Since Swift is known for her iconic red lips, you may want to get something that’s tinted red. She would definitely approve of having her BFF Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty lip balm in your collection.

TikToker @brittany.tucciaro’ s tips for the Eras Tour include bringing comfy shoes . You may have found the perfect glitter boots to pair with your Fearless ‘fit, but you have to remember the show is pretty long. If you can, pack some sandals or these Silky Toes foldable shoes that TikToker @jizellemaia recommends putting on after you snap all your pics for Insta. An even better idea is to just choose comfortable shoes from the start, like Keds .

Another practical recommendation of what to bring in your Eras Tour bag from @jizellemaia is hand sanitizer. If you plan on eating, you might not have time to stop by the bathroom to wash your hands — especially if the lines are long. Having a pocket-sized sanitizer in your bag will come in handy.

Friendship bracelets are back and, dare we say, better than ever. Taylor Swift started a lot of trends with the Eras Tour, and while it may be over (at least for now — there are also 2024 dates and the new Eras concert film ), the friendship bracelet trend she near-singlehandedly started has staying power.

I made friendship bracelets for the first time since my summer camp days in preparation for the Eras Tour, and my group of friends were surprised at how much we loved the experience. Friendship bracelets are a super-simple, approachable craft that anyone can enjoy making. You get to express your creativity with patterns and colors without needing to learn a new skill or pick up any fancy equipment (hi, crochet hooks collecting dust in my closet). They're completely customizable, and making them is a great way to bond with your friends. While my Eras Tour friendship bracelets may be the first I've made in a while, they certainly won't be the last.

Friendship-bracelet making is a perfect night-in activity, whether solo or with friends: it's a great way to disconnect, be mindful, and do something with your hands, instead of on a screen. They're also incredibly affordable — especially when you compare a night in making friendship bracelets to other activities like splurgy dinners or getting drinks. Most of us are reverting to teenagehood , anyway . . . why not lean in and join the fun?

Once you gather your supplies, it only takes a few simple steps to have a custom bracelet done and ready to wear. Read on for step-by-step instructions on how to make friendship bracelets with beads.

Gather your friendship bracelet supplies.

I bought these Acrylic Alphabet Letter Beads ($7) — which I love because they come with heart beads and letters — and these Bala&Fillic Seed Beads ($11) in the Crayon colorway. The seed beads come with elastic jewelry cord, which is perfect for making friendship bracelets as it's strong and secure but stretchy, so they're easy to take on and off. You can buy elastic jewelry cord ($16, originally $20) separately if you already have beads. You can also buy a full friendship-bracelet-making kit ($10) with different beads and jewelry cord colors.

Cut a length of cord, and tie a knot at the end.

To start, make a loose loop around your wrist with the elastic cord. Add about two extra inches, and then cut the cord to about that size. (Be generous: having extra on the ends will make it easier to tie and cut at the end.) Once you have a cut length of cord, tie a knot at one end to keep the beads in place.

Choose your pattern.

Next, choose your pattern. You can make a bracelet with a single color, multiple colors, a repeating pattern, or a totally random set of beads; it's completely up to you! Once you have about half the bracelet beaded, stop the pattern so you can add the letters.

Pick out your letters.

This is the fun part: choose what you want your bracelet to say, then thread those beads onto the cord. You can do your best friends' names, inside jokes, motivational sayings, Swiftie references, acronyms, and more.

I recommend laying the letter beads out flat on a plate so that it's easier to find the letters you need. Any flat surface works — as long as it has raised edges so the beads can't roll away.

Thread the letters onto the string.

Once you have your beads picked out, make sure you add them in the correct order. Most letter beads have the letters flipped on the opposite side, so you never have to worry about the letters looking upside down. If you'd like, you can also play with putting colored beads in between the letters.

Finish the pattern.

Once you add the lettered beads, finish the pattern. You can continue it or do a mirrored version like I did here. When you're done, tie a knot at the other end to secure the letters, and then tie the bracelet into a loop. Be sure to pull the knot tight.

Travis Kelce Wore a Sweet Nod to Taylor Swift at UC Graduation

The NFL star took the stage wearing Eras Tour friendship bracelets

Travis Kelce 's graduation day accessories subtly honored girlfriend Taylor Swift .

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and his brother, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, received their college diplomas at a “surprise commencement” ceremony at the University of Cincinnati on April 11. The duo took the stage during a live event for their podcast New Heights with Travis, 34, noticeably rocking a beaded bracelet reminiscent of the kind Swift’s fans famously exchange during the singer’s Eras Tour.

Both brothers have previously graduated from the university (Travis earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2022 and Jason, 36, got a bachelor’s degree in marketing), but neither attended their commencement ceremonies at the time, per the Cincinnati Enquirer .

In a photo from the ceremony posted by the Cincinnati Bearcats on Instagram , Travis can be seen speaking into a microphone while red and white confetti falls around him. On his wrist are multiple bracelets, one of which looks very similar to the friendship bracelets that were swapped by fans during Swift’s tour. The bracelet appears to contain letter beads, but it’s not clear what it spells out.

This isn’t the first time Travis has gotten in on the Eras Tour bracelet trend. In fact, he attempted to give his own DIY design to Swift, 34, before they officially started dating. 

In February 2024, he was decked out in friendship bracelets while supporting Swift at her concert in Sydney, Australia. In a video posted on X , he can be seen standing in the VIP tent smiling toward the stage and dancing with beaded bracelets on both of his wrists.

Travis was also spotted in beaded bracelets at his brother’s NFL retirement press conference . In photos from the March 4 event, the football star wears three bracelets, including a beaded friendship bracelet with the name “Kelce” spelled out with letter beads.

Travis and Swift went public with their romance in September 2023 and in the months since, have supported each other for career milestones. The “Cruel Summer” singer cheered Travis on at multiple games throughout the past NFL season, including the Super Bowl, in which the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers. 

As Swift gears up for the European leg of her two-year Eras Tour, Travis is set to accompany her. An insider told PEOPLE that the pair “are making plans for the summer and are excited to travel together in Europe when Taylor takes her tour there."

Friendship bracelets might not have started with Swifties, but they sure did make them even more popular .

Beaded friendship bracelets are a little token of community and belonging, of special moments and memories, of shared experiences and favorite songs sung out loud.

You’ll see them adorning the wrists of attendees at stadium concerts, weddings, family reunions, girlfriend getaways, and Wirecutter’s editor-in-chief (his says “DAD”).

Of course beaded accessories have been around long before the tour buses rolled into stadium parking lots. From Native beading to ravers making kandi bracelets to summer-camp kids, pony- and seed-bead creations have stood the test of time.

If you want to get in on the trend, you may find yourself overwhelmed in the bead aisle at your local craft store or while scrolling through the endless options on Amazon.

As Wirecutter’s (self-appointed) head camp counselor, I spent what felt like 10,000 hours researching the best supplies and techniques, stringing and unstringing bracelets, and finding solutions to every problem new bracelet makers might encounter to save you time and money. Here’s our Wirecutter-recommended way to spread the love.

The research

Choose a bead type and color palette, buy most of your beads in bags or on strings, not trays, but buy your letter beads presorted, a bead board helps keep things in order (but isn’t totally necessary), get the right string and prep it before beading, use a beading needle for speed, tie it in knots, keep folding scissors in your beading kit, store your kit, if you don’t want to invest.

Resist the temptation to buy every pretty bead you see, at least for now. It is very easy to just keep buying up supplies before you know exactly what you need.

Wirecutter purchased all of the supplies I tested, including a variety of beads from Amazon and Michaels. Honestly, we couldn’t tell much of a difference among the brands. We don’t recommend any one brand of bead, as the beads we purchased had only minor differences. (If you’re crafting fine jewelry, which we are most definitely not, that is a different discussion.)

Start by figuring out what style and color selection of beads you want to use. I chose blue because Wirecutter’s brand color is a nice bright blue.

Pony beads are generally plastic and 9 by 6 mm with a large 4 mm hole that makes them easy to string. They come in a huge range of colors and are inexpensive (about half a cent per bead), and the bracelets you can make out of them are perfect for handing out or trading.

While almost any pony beads will do, we like that these come in bags organized by color and don’t come with junk like dull, flimsy scissors.

Buying Options

Round beads are made of glass or acrylic, and are usually smaller than pony beads (8 mm is a good size, but 6 mm also works well for friendship bracelets). Round beads look more elevated than pony beads but are slightly slower to string than larger-hole pony beads and are more expensive (about 1¢ to 2¢ per bead).

We like the elevated look of this bead style, and this brand sells beads strung by color, which means you can choose your own storage container.

We recommend pony beads or round beads for most people making friendship bracelets for events. That’s mostly due to their size—you need fewer beads to complete a bracelet, and they are less annoying to string than smaller beads.

Spacer beads add a little break between beads, often come in gold or silver but can be any color, and are a good transition bead to separate letter beads into distinct words.

These spacer beads come in gold, silver, and rose gold and help break up patterns and words in your bracelets.

Seed beads and clay beads are the smallest. Seed beads come in many sizes but are generally around 2 mm in diameter with a small hole. Clay beads are flat and around 6 mm in diameter, with a 2 mm hole.

The smaller size of seed and clay beads makes them slow to string, but the completed bracelet tends to look more refined. I tested the Beadalon Spin-N-Bead , a wooden device that uses centrifugal force to gently fling seed beads onto a beading needle in a random pattern. It has a bit of a learning curve, especially with clay beads, but Kelly Prepster Studio has a good YouTube tutorial (video) that helped me understand the flow of it. Beadalon also makes quick-change trays so you can switch colors without emptying the spinner every time.

Beads come in three types of packaging: in resealable plastic bags, on string, and in hard-plastic slotted trays that snap closed. The presorted trays have tiny compartments filled with beads that my adult-size fingers have trouble pinching. You can use tweezers or jewelry pliers to pick beads up, but I prefer the more tactile nature of using my fingers for this type of work. I find it a lot easier to pour bagged beads into stacking containers to work from rather than picking individual beads out of the tiny slots.

The bonus is that bagged and strung beads are less likely to come with cheap unnecessary add-ons like dull scissors or string that snaps too easily.

I know I just told you to buy bagged or strung beads, but I have one exception: letter beads. Buy those (preferably the standard white letter beads) in a presorted tray.

If the letters are already organized alphabetically in the trays, you can find what you need quickly. A jumbled bag of random letters means you spend more time sorting for that rogue Y than actually beading.

Then, when you run out of vowels or common letters, you can buy a bag of just that letter or vowels as refills, which means you don’t have to keep buying the trays over and over and end up with 1,000 Zs.

A lot of pretty letter-bead shapes or colors are available, and I’m telling you to resist. Resist! Many of those letter sets aren’t sold individually, so they are so much harder to replace when you need more letters. And you will always need more letters.

In my enthusiasm, I bought a kit that came with rose gold letters. I hit a standstill nearly immediately, as the kit came with one A, one R and yet had three Ws. So as to not waste what I had, I ended up using some of those rose gold letters to start words. Good thing Wirecutter starts with W, eh?

You may also want to buy a bag of number beads to have on hand for 13s, 22s, and your phone number. Not only can you make a phone number bracelet to, say, slip to a world-famous singer-songwriter, but if you have someone in your life who may get separated from you and need to contact you (a small child or someone with Alzheimer’s, for example), a phone number bracelet can be a lifesaver.

Adult wrists often fall between 6 to 8 inches, so if you’re making bracelets for strangers, aim for somewhere around 7 inches in length, which equates roughly to about 30 beads per bracelet. Kid-size wrists are smaller, in the 4- to 6-inch range. It’s helpful to have something to measure your string against, especially if you’re making a bracelet for someone whose wrist size you know.

A bead tray, such as The Beadsmith Bead Board with Cover , has a soft, flocked surface with channels, grooves to help you plan your patterns, and size markings to help you measure. It’s helpful when you’re working on a slick surface since the tray itself prevents your beads from rolling away. I bought one with a plastic cover, thinking it would be helpful, but there’s no way to secure the cover, so it’s better if you’re, say, beading in your house and want to take a break, rather than beading while traveling.

The workaround is laying down a piece of felt on any tray with sides and then using a tailor’s measuring tape so you can measure your string against it before you knot and cut it.

Elastic string is perfect when you’re making bracelets for people whose wrist size you don’t know. You should have string with enough stretch that it accommodates multiple wrist sizes but also holds its shape and doesn’t stretch out too much.

Stretch Magic cord is on the pricey side but holds its shape well. The 0.7 mm size is best for pony beads, and the thinner, 0.5 mm size works well with round beads (this will make it easier to string through the smaller hole and will make the knot smaller and less visible).

Before you start beading, stretch about 10 to 12 inches of string so the elastic has less opportunity to stretch once the bracelet is completed and on your wrist. If you use cheaper string—often what comes bundled with beads—and it snaps in your hands while you stretch it, it definitely won’t survive everyday wear and tear.

The most important tip for reducing string waste is to not precut your string. Just bead directly onto the roll so you can snug up the finished bracelet as close to the end as possible when you knot it off.

The downside of elastic string is that it can be wobbly when you’re trying to bead. A big-eye beading needle allows you to stage multiple beads and then push them through. We tried the Beadalon Big Eye Beading Needles , The Beadsmith Basic Elements Collapsible Eye Needles , and options from Amazon off-brands . We liked the test-tube style packaging of the generic needles, but the Beadalon needle was a bit sturdier overall.

This needle is easy to thread and easy to bead, but it will bend if you’re using thick elastic and beads with small holes.

Once you’ve finished stringing your bracelet, tie off the elastic with three to four knots and add a dot of clear nail polish to help prevent the bracelet from opening and allowing your hard work to skitter all over the floor.

We tried the Beadalon Bead Stringing Glue and really liked the fine-point tip on it that made adding a dot of glue to the knot simple. But the formula itself has an intense, astringent smell, and the cap was challenging to replace (you need to insert a needle-thin wire into the hole on the glue tube, which requires a hefty amount of hand-eye coordination).

We also ordered crimp beads to use as knot covers but found that they weren’t really worth the time and effort. You can easily tuck a knot inside a pony bead so it doesn’t show, and with the round beads, I actually like to have my knot showing. It feels a little punk rock.

Our budget pick, the Fiskars 8 Inch The Original Orange-Handled Scissors , works very well for cutting the elastic. But they are big and take up space. Having a pair of compact, folding, TSA-approved pair of scissors that live in your beading kit makes it that much more portable.

I tested three types of small, TSA-compliant travel scissors: the Coghlan’s Folding Scissors , Singer 151 3-Inch Folding Scissors , and a pair that came in the Fiskars Sewing Kit . The Coghlan’s scissors were by far the most comfortable to hold and use and the easiest to fold and unfold. Made of stainless steel, they fold up quickly, are perfect for keeping in your beading kit, and can even be taken on an airplane—perfect for Swifties heading to Europe for her summer tour.

I store the beads in the bags they came in and then use clear, round stacking jars to sort while beading. Just be careful if you’re going to store the beads in the jars because if you’re a little clumsy while unscrewing the stack, you’ll end up with beads everywhere. That’s why I pour the beads back into the bag after a bracelet-making sesh.

But if you prefer a snap-close beading box, Bead Landing makes bead organizers that have deep, wide compartments and secure enclosures that are much more accessible than the smaller snap containers beads come in.

It keeps your equipment dry, safe, and secure for whenever the beading mood strikes.

Concert bracelet making is all about trading, so you want to efficiently string as many as you can. If you plan to make a lot of bracelets, you’ll get more value out of investing in the individual supplies rather than kits, which may come bundled with unnecessary or redundant supplies.

You will probably spend more initially, but the savings per bracelet will be greater. If the average bracelet uses 20 pony beads and 10 letter beads, it will cost you about $35 for the basic supplies of pony beads, letter beads, and elastic string, which makes about 50 bracelets with some supplies left over.

The couple was spotted out to dinner at a posh sushi restaurant in Los Angeles April 12. The Kansas City Chiefs star wore an olive green knit top and matching shorts while the "Blank Space" singer paired a red bomber jacket—reminiscent of the outfits she wore while cheering her boyfriend on at his NFL games this past season—with a black top and denim skirt. Taylor also wore her long blond hair loose and wavy and her signature red lipstick.

The pair stepped out at the start of the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which takes place in Indio, Calif. east of Los Angeles. While Taylor is not on the lineup, a few of her friends did perform at the event that night—headliner Lana Del Rey , plus Sabrina Carpenter , who opened for the "Style" singer on her recent Eras tour, and Suki Waterhouse .

Taylor and the Super Bowl 2024 champion , who have been together since last summer, stepped out for their sushi date weeks after vacationing together in the Bahamas . The Grammy winner is set to resume her tour in May, when she will begin an international leg in France, and her boyfriend plans to join her abroad  as he continues his own work hiatus before he begins training for the upcoming NFL season.

July 2023: So, Make the Friendship Bracelets

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce 's love story began in July 2023, when the singer's Eras Tour made a stop at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

As a huge Swiftie, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end caught the show with hopes of giving Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number on it . However, he failed to complete the pass due to her pre-show rituals.

"I was disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings," Travis shared on the July 26 episode of his  New Heights podcast. "So, I was a little butt-hurt I didn't get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her."

Summer 2023: This Is Him Trying

After publicly recounting his fumble—a move Taylor would later describe as "metal as hell" —Travis decided to shoot his shot and invite the Grammy winner to watch the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium.

"I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court," he shared on The Pat McAfee Show . "I told her, you know, 'I've seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead, you might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one's a little more lit.' So, we'll see what happens in the near future."
