The 20% growth compared to the same period in 2019 reflects the city’s resilience and magnetic appeal. As visitors flock to this emirate, it is not just its opulent offerings that attract attention, but also the thriving travel tech industry that powers Dubai’s tourism landscape.

Among them is, OnArrival, a ‘travel-as-a-service’ platform founded by Ankit Sawant and Pawan Shetty in 2022. OnArrival’s unique proposition lies in bringing together 20 ancillary travel services onto one platform through its proprietary Application Programming Interfaces (API). This enables sellers like online travel agencies and other booking avenues to offer a seamless experience to their customers.

Sawant, who is also the CEO of the company, highlighted the importance of catering to high-end travel experiences saying OnArrival’s focus on the discovery of unique experiences enables their enterprise customers to provide tailored offerings, aligning with the luxury-seeking desires of Dubai’s visitors.

“High-end travel experiences are usually more about the physical experience or a combination of physical and technology. At OnArrival, what we enable is the discovery part of these experiences for our enterprise customers, who can then make it available to their customers. However, for India, luxury travel is still a small part of the market, which largely ends up focusing on more westward travel,” he said.

 “Corporate travel is an important component for anyone in the travel business. And Dubai being the gateway to the Middle East, we see a lot of corporate travel moving into UAE. What we have aimed to enable through our approach to corporate travel is to align the purpose of travel with actual business outcomes. This is going to be very crucial for business travel as, post-pandemic, the scrutiny on business trips has increased manifold, and therefore, corporates are looking at these expenses with a hawk eye,” he added.

According to Sawant, as the travel landscape becomes increasingly competitive, with travellers seeking personalised and authentic experiences, his company’s tech-driven approach differentiates itself in a market where customisation and uniqueness are highly valued.

OnArrival’s tech innovations align with the Dubai government’s vision for sustainable and responsible tourism. “A couple of interesting things we have been doing include planning day-to-day itineraries in a way that travelers have a lower carbon footprint by using fewer mobility solutions. We also help users not only select modes of transport with the least carbon footprint but also assist them in offsetting the same through projects of their choice,” he added.

TravRays, a Dubai-based travel technology company, has launched a complete end-to-end technology platform which encompasses an advanced booking engine using multiple sources of air and non-air content, combined with customer profiling, comprehensive reporting and management capabilities, thereby addressing the need of travel industry and e-retail products for distribution network. Hari Kumar Manivannan, general manager of TravRays, said: "TravRays ( www.travrays.ae ) was all geared up to provide solutions and manage business requirements to multiple opportunities that exist in a market place. The systems act as a platform where travel agents, travel suppliers such as airlines, car rentals and hotels can be both a supplier and a customer at the same time. He added: "With our professional experience of 20 plus years in the industry, we understand the importance of delivery and customer satisfaction. Our team and the core engine are committed to service round the clock. TravRays platform is ready to integrate with any travel supplier within the UAE and beyond. We have beta-tested with over 75 travel agents and our clientele base is increasing day by day." Following its official launch in Dubai earlier this week, a two-day workshop was planned briefing the industry stakeholders about the concept and its benefits. R Sankaranarayanan, founder of this technology, said TravRays offers a single window to address the needs of the travel agency allowing the administrators/consultants and key decision-makers to have complete control of their business. The core engine will extend through proper solutions and business offerings to multiple opportunities that exist in market place. TravRays has a Business on Agent office (BOA) which is a fully integrated ERP solution, GSA, Sub-Agent and Reseller model. TravRays is currently focused in the UAE, and it will expand to GCC markets in next two years. In the UAE, it has set a target of bringing 2,500 travel agents under the platform. "End to end transactions of a travel agency might look easy and smooth for laymen, but unlike the common perception, it is complex and hectic. Almost 75 per cent of all travel industry transactions are manual. Existing platforms -in the market offer-only single interface (airlines) whereas TravRays offers multiple content option with process made simple, transparent and straight-forward," he said. The UAE is a significantly important travel market. Annually, about 16 million airline seats are sold in the UAE, out of which about 60 per cent are going through the travel agencies, he said, adding that the new platform will help reduce the time span for transactions considerably. According to IATA, $16.6 billion worth air tickets were sold in the Middle East last year through travel agents (40 million air tickets), of which $4.1 billion worth air tickets were picked up in the UAE. IATA-approved agents sold 7.4 million air tickets in UAE last year. The UAE ranked 18th in the world for the volume of air tickets sold through the IATA-approved travel agencies last year. - [email protected]

Innovation in Middle East Poised to Be Key Driver for Global Travel Over Next 25 Years

The new travel ideas being generated in places like Abu Dhabi and Dubai today could be the bridge to the rest of the Africa continent and the entire world in the not-so-distant future — if the region's innovators absorb the lessons from other tech hubs.

U.S. startups have honed the process of failing fast and learning through minimal viable product adaption — a lesson the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) funding ecosystem should leverage.

The region’s ability to champion travel tech and innovation was under discussion at Skift Global Forum East on Wednesday in Dubai. 

Skift senior hospitality editor Sean o’Neill unpacked travel tech startup pitfalls and opportunities in the region with Charaf El Mansouri, co-founder and CEO of Dharma , Fares Alaboud, head of product at Gathern , and Chris Hemmeter, partner at Thayer Ventures.  

The panelists shared how Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as the equivalent of San Francisco and the Valley for the MENA region, is seeing strong innovation in the business travel and alternative accommodations categories.

Building a Mena Travel-Tech Bridge

“There’s an opportunity to be a bridge to what’s happening in the region and the African continent, which is extremely interesting at a number of levels, not just travel tech, but fintech,” said Hemmeter who believes the region is set to be a “dynamic growth engine for travel for the next 25 to 30 years.” 

Thayer Ventures partners with entrepreneurs to create, develop and build technology companies that will revolutionize the travel and transportation industry.

He noted that startups were looking to do things differently and not just put a spin on travel, the world’s largest industry. 

The tremendous growth in the region also played a key factor, as did its predominantly domestic and regional market. 

“Saudi’s trying to hit 10 percent on its tourism (gross domestic product) GDP, which is really exciting by 2030, with more than 90 percent of all tourism in the kingdom being local and regional,” said Alaboud, head of product at Gathern. 

As the largest accommodation provider, essentially the Airbnb in Saudi Arabia, Gathern has overcome certain challenges in building its peer-to-peer market. 

Education to Overcome Slow Market Adoption

Education for hosts and one-on-one convincing of hotels was not uncommon said Alaboud as they set about increasing market adoption for short-term rentals.

He said variety, as in Europe and the U.S., remains integral, as did dynamic supply, with considerable support from within the region to drive awareness and grow the offering.  

El Mansouri, who founded Dharma with its niche passion-based itineraries as a solution to the high audience acquisition costs online travel agencies faced, said the company moved back to Morocco in 2019 to grow the business.  

The region was the “only people in the world taking a 50-year review on tourism at the time,” he said. 

“We were picked up by Mubadala and their startup program, Hub 71 Abu Dhabi in November 2020 and have been here ever since.”

He also recognized the region has a competitive advantage in seasonality to establish itself in the area of wellness tourism. 

Celebrate Failure and Share Progress Often

When it comes to venture capital, Hemeter said business-to-business, whether software services, platforms or marketplaces is a very different value proposition where return on investment can be truly analyzed. 

When it comes to healthy startup financing, Hemmeter acknowledged Dharma and Gathern as “two extraordinary examples.” 

If the region was serious about collaboration it would need to involve homegrown investors from the region, as well as from the across the world.   

“One of the things that’s unique about Silicon Valley is in a strange way, failure is almost celebrated. So it’ll be interesting to see if that sort of drives the ecosystem here,” Hemmeter added.

In closing, O’Neill wanted to know what would be the key pointers for anybody secretly dreaming of building a startup. 

Hemmeter weighed in: “We live in a highly competitive dynamic world, and as investors, we put money in and we hope to get that money out in six to eight years. It’s not just about the first nine months.”

The MENA region has undergone a huge transformation in recent years, with technology and innovation driving economic growth.

Such a shift has seen the region’s tech startup ecosystem grow quickly, with regional startups raising record funding in 2022 – more than US$2 billion invested across sectors including fintech, e-commerce, health tech, and edtech.

Among the startup hubs driving such regional growth, the UAE cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi feature in the top five ecosystems from the MENA region, according to the 2023 Global Startup Report.

In particular, Abu Dhabi’s startup ecosystem value has seen staggering growth of 134%, from July 2020 to December 2022 – marking the sixth fastest globally and the top regionally. 

And the emirates’ rise in the rankings is only likely to accelerate given the programmes and policies being rolled out.

The UAE Government has pledged to develop more than 8,000 SMEs and startups by 2030 with the goal of creating 20 startups valued at more than US$1 billion by 2031.

The startup, which raised US$2 million in a Series A round led by Global Ventures in 2021, represents almost all the car industry’s biggest and most prestigious brands including Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen.

Today, the product is regularly used in more than 600 car showrooms across the Middle East as well as in Sweden, Singapore and Australia.

Dubai seeks faster travel at new terminal in Al Maktoum Airport with emerging technology

Cutting-edge aviation technology from AI to electric aircraft will help to reimagine passengers' journeys through Dubai's new $35bn passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport.

A “massive leap” in aviation technology at the new terminal will dismantle the old ways of processing passengers through airports and get rid of choke-points through the hub for faster travel, Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports, told The National on Monday.

“Airports have a habit of legacy processes but we're determined to engineer this out. There will be huge investments in automation to make the customer service ethos better and to improve the quality of what we deliver. We've only scratched the service of what AI will deliver in this,” he said.

“Watch this space. The operating model of the airport will be very different from what we have seen.”

A surge in demand for air travel is placing “extraordinary pressure” on existing and new airports, national borders and airline resources, according to an April white paper on biometrics by Sita, an IT provider for the air transport industry.

The existing paper-based and manual travel infrastructure and legacy processes “simply won’t be able to cope”, according to the paper.

The solution is to leverage the power of facial and fingerprint biometrics to create a smoother and safer air travel experience, it said. Advanced technology will also help to solve other aviation industry challenges such as space constraints, specialist staff shortages and evolving passenger wants.

The global demand for travel is rising and biometrics is at the “forefront of this transformation” as the number of air travellers is set to double to eight billion annually by 2040, up from four billion in 2019, according to projections by the International Air Transport Association (Iata).

Dubai Airports has already made investments in biometric technology to funnel more people through Dubai International Airport faster, with the aim of increasing its capacity to 120 million passengers annually.

The first phase of the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum Airport is expected to be ready within 10 years, with the capacity to accommodate 150 million passengers annually.

The new airport terminal, spread across 70 square kilometres, will feature 400 aircraft gates, five parallel runways and new aviation technology.

That technology will focus on “the ability to eliminate legacy processes that we've had to endure for so long,” Mr Griffiths said.

“I can't think of another commodity that makes you book and then you go to the airport and reaffirm that you want that product.”

Future-proofing the new airport

Operator Dubai Airports is now in the detail design phase of the project during which decisions must be made on the hub's final configuration, operations, relationship with ground transport, customer service plan, F&B and retail strategy.

“With the design process, it is imperative that we rethink what the fundamentals of airports are: they are a way of ensuring the smooth and seamless transition from ground to air, that’s the whole rationale of having an airport,” Mr Griffiths said.

“We are taking a long, hard look at that in the design process.”

This also means that internal and external rail networks, road transport, electric aircraft technology, executive jets and budget airlines will be “incredibly important” elements for the efficiency of the new terminal, he said.

Dubai has signed an agreement with US-based electric aircraft maker Joby Aviation to launch passenger air taxi services in the emirate, which Joby expects to start as early as next year.

Built into the new airport terminal design is the flexibility to incorporate technology currently available today and emerging tech that develops over the years.

“Flexibility, imagination and collaboration are what we need to make it work effectively,” Mr Griffiths said.

The new terminal design, despite its ability to accommodate more runway movements, will take into account sustainable operations, the Dubai Airports boss said.

“We are all learning from climate change and there’s an acceptance that you cannot regard heavy rain as a minor event. We need to invest in systems and infrastructure to deal with climate change,” he said.

This will entail major investments in sustainability in terms of solar power, waste treatment, biofuels and a “huge number of initiatives” to combat the impact of climate change, Mr Griffiths said.

Dubai International Airport (DXB), the world's largest hub by international traffic for 10 consecutive years, struggled to clear a backlog of flights after a record-breaking rainstorm in the UAE earlier this month.

DXB resumed normal operations days after the storm flooded taxiways, forcing flight diversions, delays and cancellations.

In addition to the Travel Tech space, ATM 2023 will also include a brand-new Sustainability Hub, highlighting the latest environmentally-responsible travel trends and innovations. The ATM Travel Tech Stage, sponsored by Sabre, will host several in-depth panel discussions exploring modern innovations such as artificial intelligence, big data, and Web3 and how they can enable seamless operations, professional development, payments, accessibility, sustainable travel, and enhanced customer experiences.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, stated that innovation is a crucial component of the event's theme, ' Working Towards Net Zero '. The nine companies’ activities span various fields including cybersecurity, mobility technology, health and fitness technologies, new energy-based vehicles, robotics, autonomous systems, e-commerce, the automotive industry, legal services, and cryptocurrencies. Underlining the promising global opportunities available within Dubai’s digital economy, the chamber attracted three digital companies from Asia, three from Europe, two from the USA, and one from Latin America. F lying taxis will cut travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to just 30 minutes, industry experts said, while highlighting the UAE being at the forefront of the urban mobility revolution.

“Our aircraft will be able to fly between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in 30 to 35 minutes,” an executive from Joby Aviation told during DRIFTx – the world’s only smart and autonomous mobility and transport event – held at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.

JoeBen Bevirt, CEO of Joby Aviation, during a panel discussion, noted that the momentum seen in the UAE regarding creating infrastructure and certifying autonomous aircraft has been fantastic.

“The UAE has been able to expedite moves on building critical infrastructure,” Bevirt said and underlined that safety and noise control have been key considerations for Joby Aviation.

In February, Joby Aviation announced a signing agreement with Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) to launch air taxi services in the Emirate by early 2026.

Other companies like eVTOL developer Archer Aviation and UAE’s aviation services operator Falcon Aviation have already announced plans to develop vertiport infrastructure for critical locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Also, both Joby and Archer have signed up for Abu Dhabi's Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry (SAVI) cluster established by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).

During DRIFTx, Archer announced the signing of a framework agreement to accelerate planned commercial air taxi operations in the UAE, slated to launch as soon as next year with its Midnight aircraft.

Key components of Archer’s collaboration with ADIO include vertiport construction, operational enablement for air taxi operations in the UAE, and in-country manufacturing of Midnight aircraft. Under the agreement, ADIO will ensure local workforce development programmes for Emirati talent and facilitate the establishment of Archer’s international headquarters and centre of excellence in Abu Dhabi.

“This substantial agreement with Abu Dhabi is a pivotal moment for Archer’s commercialisation efforts across the Emirates, as it provides the catalyst to accelerate the launch of our electric air taxi service in the UAE as soon as late 2025,” said Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein.

Meanwhile, visitors to the DRIFTx were treated to what the future holds. There were Automated Rapid Transit (ART), TAXI self-driving taxis sporting the new livery, and driverless minibus to ferry visitors from one end to another. In between, visitors could check out the sea, air, and land demos of different innovative solutions in action. Once inside the exhibition area, top global companies showcased prototypes of flying taxis, driverless cars, drones, and several innovative systems, including visitors partaking in a real-time streaming demo of driving on the streets of South Korea.

In line with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to position Dubai as a global technology leader, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, unveiled the Dubai Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence, reported state news agency WAM .

The yearly plan aims to harness technology’s potential to enhance quality of life across sectors.

Sheikh Hamdan said, “In 1999, Dubai commenced its journey towards the future by launching its digital transformation venture, which has continued to achieve major milestones leading to the recent unveiling of the Dubai Digital Strategy last year. We have realised record-breaking accomplishments that have established Dubai as the premier hub for billion-dollar global enterprises in the technology and artificial intelligence sectors within the region.”

He added “To enhance Dubai’s global leadership, today we launch Dubai’s Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence applications, which will achieve the targets of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) by contributing Dhs100bn annually to Dubai’s economy through the digital economy and increasing the economy’s productivity by 50 percent through the adoption of innovative digital solutions.”

“Through the first phase of the plan for this year, we will work on appointing a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer in every government entity in Dubai, launch AI and Web3 incubators as well as announce an AI Week in educational institutions. Land for data centres will be fast tracked, and a new commercial licence for artificial intelligence will be introduced.”

He emphasised that the key goal of the plan is to ensure the well-being of Dubai’s citizens and residents.

“We will annually review, update, and launch new projects to ensure that the plan keeps pace with all developments. Dubai is a city whose focus is humanity, and we will harness all our capabilities to make our society the happiest in the world,” he said.

Strategic vision: Sheikh Hamdan emphasised the plan’s alignment with Dubai’s digital transformation journey, reflecting a commitment to innovation and leveraging AI to shape a brighter future. Focus areas: The plan targets sectors crucial for Dubai’s progress, with a strong emphasis on economic growth, technology utilisation, and advanced applications adoption. Initiatives: Dubai aims to appoint Chief Artificial Intelligence Officers in government entities, launch AI and Web3 incubators, and introduce an AI Week in educational institutions. Commercial license: A new commercial license for AI will be introduced, facilitating investment and attracting global talent to support Dubai’s position as a tech and innovation hub. Infrastructure development : Land allocation for data centers will be expedited to support foreign investments and enhance Dubai’s digital infrastructure. As part of the first phase, Dubai is set to inaugurate its AI and WEB3 Incubator to establish the largest hub for AI and technology companies, with the objective of attracting innovators, startups, and AI frontrunners from across the globe.

Governance and legislation: Dubai plans to lead in AI governance and legislation, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and attracting top talent. Government operations: AI tools will be integrated into government projects to enhance performance and service delivery, ensuring Dubai remains at the forefront of innovation. Strategic partnerships: The plan aims to forge partnerships with AI companies and global talent, facilitating business operations and advancing technological capabilities.

Economic objectives

The plan seeks to bring in Dhs100bn annually to Dubai’s economy through digital transformation projects, supporting the D33 Agenda’s objectives.

Dubai aims to solidify its position as a global hub for the digital economy, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and growth. The city currently ranks first globally in foreign direct investment in artificial intelligence, first in the Middle East in technology entrepreneurship, and seventh globally in readiness for artificial intelligence applications, as per a WAM report.

Dubai’s Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence underscores the city’s commitment to leveraging technology for societal progress and economic prosperity.
