Multi-platinum hard-rock heroes , EXTREME , announce their first Australian tour in 5 years to celebrate the release of their new album “Six”, and bringing their friends LIVING COLOUR to join them as they celebrate the 30 th anniversary of “Stain”.

Get ready for a night of exceptional live music as two of the most influential and talented rock bands come together for an unforgettable show. Two iconic bands, one electrifying night.

With the force of a Boston wrecking ball, EXTREME swings between unapologetic fits of fret-burning hard rock and intimately introspective balladry. This dynamic affirms the iconic multiplatinum Beantown quartet— Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Pat Badger (bass), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums)—as one of rock’s most unpredictable, undeniable, and unbreakable groups whose songs course through the very fabric of popular culture.

EXTREME is the rare band whose music has appeared in an actual cult series a la Bill & Ted as well as the Netflix juggernaut “Stranger Things.”  They’ve sold 10 million records, topped the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1, packed major venues on multiple continents, memorably performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in London, and regularly average over 5 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

EXTREME is about to release their sixth studio album and their dynamic approach hits harder than ever on their 2023 full-length offering, Six – which is due for release on 9 th June via EarMUSIC.  Pre-orders are available now here and watch the band’s undeniable firepower and chemistry on the album’s first single, Rise, which was directed by Nuno and filmed in Los Angeles.

LIVING COLOUR emerged onto the scene and made the people stop and take notice.  Formed in 1984 and spearheaded by guitarist Vernon Reid, their music became a creative fusion influenced by free jazz, funk, hard rock and heavy metal.  By 1986, the band started to solidify, with Corey Glover joining on vocals, bassist Muzz Skillings and drummer Will Calhoun anchoring the rhythm section that helped hone their unique blend of music with broad-based appeal.

Their debut album,  Vivid was released in 1988 on Epic Records and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Albums chart and eventually became a multi-platinum success.  It featured Cult of Personality which was a No. 13 hit on the Billboard Singles chart and went on to earn the band their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

LIVING COLOUR’s follow up album , Time’s Up, was a gold selling release that won them their other Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1991. By the middle of the ’90s, the band had gone on hiatus, and they were re-energised in 2003, and joined by bass player  Doug Wimbish . Since then , Living Colour have remained an active unit, released two albums of new material and received raves for their incendiary live performances. Their latest album Shade was released in 2017, charting in the US Top Hard Rock Albums Billboard and receiving critical acclaim.

This event is not to be missed, as EXTREME and LIVING COLOUR will take you on a journey with their electrifying performances.  Experience these two hugely iconic hard rock bands in one unforgettable show.  So, book your tickets now and brace yourself for an epic night of music.

IT’S GONNA BE EXTREME. IT’S GONNA BE COLOURFUL.

Extreme Kick Off Australian Tour In Melbourne

by Paul Cashmere on September 6, 2023

Extreme are back in Australia for what is only their third ever Australian tour. Extreme first toured Australia in 1993 and then not again until 2018. That may seem infrequent but then again so are the albums. There have only been six Extreme albums in 35 years.

For the Thicker Than Blood 2023 tour Extreme have curated a a complete show. The showcase for this show is the new ‘Six’ album which has a surprising number of strong songs that fit right in with the Extreme back catalogue. Since the tour began at the start of August in Portland, USA, Extreme have been incorporating six from ‘Six’ album into the set.

‘Six’ is a strong album from start to finish. Every song sounds like it was recorded to be played live so even with half a dozen new songs in the set there is no ‘go to the bar’ moments. It is also quite an accomplishment for a band like Extreme to be able to play as many songs from their new album ‘Six’ as their biggest album ‘Pornograffti’ and maintain the constituency of the show.

There were interesting faces in the crowd. This was definitely a longtime fan audience. Think about ‘More Than Words’ for instance. That was 33 years ago. A 27-year old fan then is 60 now. Some of these fans have enjoyed a long journey with this band.

The line-up is also rock sold. Gary Cherone on vocals, Nuno Bettencourt on guitar and Pat Badger on bass were there at the start. Drummer Kevin Figeiredo has been with Extreme since 2007 and is the drummer of ‘Six’ (2023) and ‘Saudades de Rock’ (2008) as well as the 2010 live album ‘Take Us Alive’.

What is also great about this band is that they are not afraid to honour their influences. Queen’s “We Will Rock You’ and ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ are inserted into the set for a moment and the is also an occasional nod to Van Halen along the way too. Gary Cherone was a one-time singer for Van Halen on ‘Van Halen III’ and was lead singer for Van Halen on the only Van Halen Australian tour in 1998. Pat Badger was on Sammy Hagar’s live album, as was Cherone. These two bands are intertwined so nice to see the nod.

The set showcases the individual members along the way but the big moment is when just Gary and Nuno perform ‘More Than Words’ together on stage. That song has become a moment in time and an historic musical marker for the turn of the 80s into the 90s just before Grunge exploded. Right after that time, music took on a whole new and unexpected direction which derailed the momentum of Extreme but also Bon Jovi and Van Halen at the time.

Setlist 2023

It (‘s a Monster) (from Pornograffiti, 1990) Decadence Dance (from Pornograffiti, 1990) #Rebel (from Six, 2023) Rest in Peace (from III Sides to Every Story, 1992) Hip Today (from Waiting For The Punchline, 1995) Teacher’s Pet / Flesh ‘n’ Blood / Wind Me Up / Kid Ego (all from Extreme, 1989) Play With Me (from Extreme, 1989) (Intro: Queen’s “We Will Rock You” 1st Verse/Chorus) Tragic Comic (from III Sides to Every Story, 1992) Hole Hearted (from Pornograffiti, 1990) Other Side of the Rainbow (from Six, 2023) Cupid’s Dead (from III Sides to Every Story, 1992) Am I Ever Gonna Change (from III Sides to Every Story, 1992) Midnight Express (from Waiting For The Punchline, 1995) Hurricane (from Six, 2023) More Than Words (from Pornograffiti, 1990) Banshee (from Six, 2023) (Intro: Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls”) Take Us Alive (from Saudades de Rock, 2008) / That’s All Right (Elvis Presley cover) Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee (from Take Us Alive, 2010) Get the Funk Out (from Pornograffiti, 1990)

Encore: Small Town Beautiful (from Six, 2023) / Song for Love (from Pornograffiti, 1990) Rise (from Six, 2023) Here’s To The Losers (from Six, 2023)

Extreme is four real musicians playing songs you know the way you know them. This is a 100% organic rock band with no preservatives added. Living Colour opened for Extreme. That’s as 100% as you can get as well. If you just want to get out and see some quality rock on stage then this is the show for you.

Hard rock legends Extreme  have announced their first Australian tour in five years, with fellow rockers Living Colour in tow, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their third album, Stain .

The co-headline run brings five epic September nights of shredding to theatre venues - a night of exceptional live music. Two iconic bands, one electrifying night. Tickets go on sale next Friday, 21 April, at 10 am local time. Find more information below.

Extreme swing between unapologetic fits of fret-burning hard rock and intimately introspective balladry.

The iconic multiplatinum Boston quartet— Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Pat Badger (bass), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums)—are one of rock’s most unpredictable, undeniable, and unbreakable groups whose songs course through the very fabric of popular culture. Who doesn’t know More Than Words ?

Last month, Extreme released the first single from their upcoming album, Six , in Rise , which features the most baffling, mind-blowing guitar solo we’ve heard in a long time.

Bettencourt commented about the song, “When Eddie Van Halen  passed, it really hit me. I’m not going to be the one who will take the throne, but I felt some responsibility to keep guitar playing alive. So, you hear a lot of fire on the record.”

“I feel like we need a good old-school rock album. SIX  is definitely modern, but you can put on headphones and go on a journey from top-to-bottom. It’s like ‘EXTREME 2.0’.” Pre-order Six  here and check out Rise  below.

By 1986, the band started to solidify, with Corey Glover  joining on vocals, bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Will Calhoun  anchoring the rhythm section that helped hone their unique blend of music with broad-based appeal.

Recent tour reviews

The Band sounded amazing. The original 3 members, Gary,Nuno, and Pat were as tight as ever. The set list was so deep it was amazing that there were still like 3 songs I would have liked to hear. Crazy thing was I wanted them to do Queen's Hammer to fall, but got We are the champions so I can't really bitch there. Only thing else missing was if the boys would have done a couple of Van Halen III songs. Other then that AMAZING SHOW!! boys were dead on

Show muito bom! Nuno Bettencourt tocando muito! Vale a pena assistir... só faltou tocar a Stop the World.

Gary Cherone cantando demais também, baixo como sempre e o novo batera impressionando. A participação especial do Richie Kotzen na abertura também foi animal.

This concert was amazing. I was quite surprised and happy that such a HUGE crowd showed up to support the group. Nuno never fails to delight with his incredible guitar playing. He was definitely the star of the show!!! Gary's voice was decent tonight as well. He's a great front-man. I could do without the "When I First Kissed You" song. I've hated that since the first time I heard it. It kind of put us to sleep. That was the ONLY bad part of the show...take that one out guys...it sucks. If I wanted to see Frank Sinatra...well, I never would actually.

One other thing...I really hate that people are holding up their cell phones and recording the entire show. STOP AND ENJOY THE SHOW PEOPLE!!!! It makes it hard to see over you. Kind of sad that people are doing that.

The bottom line...Extreme is AWESOME and they are DEFINITELY worth seeing live. I would go see them again and again and again.

PAUL GILBERT: MR BIG/EXTREME AUSTRALIAN TOUR INTERVIEW

  • AustralianMusician
  • May 27, 2018
  • Features , Interviews

extreme band australian tour

James: We are so pumped to be able to see Mr Big for the very first time in Australia Paul: Yeah, at long last.

This will be the first time you’ll be here with a band. You have been here before with clinics though. I kinda cheated in that I play with some local musicians in my clinics, so it feels like a band but this will be the first band with some rehearsal!

The idea of both Mr Big and Extreme touring together is insane. You must have known Nuno Bettencourt for some time? Yeah, we go back to the old days. I remember some festivals back in the early 90s that we played. Nuno and I did a concert in Japan called Guitar Wars, along with John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin and Steve Hackett from Genesis. We are both Pat Travers fans, so we have played with him but this is the first time we’ll play for 4 or 5 shows, whatever it is. We are all so busy these days. In the 90s I had time off. Now … I mean I love it and I am really happy that I am doing music all of the time but it is at quite a breakneck pace. A lot of times you just open an email from management and it’s like whoa, we’re doing a tour with Extreme … cool! So it wasn’ a thing where Nuno and I sat around and planned it, I just heard about it from management and I thought it was great. I am excited to see him and everybody and of course. I did some work with Gary Cherone. Billy Sheehan did a tribute to The Who with Mike Portnoy and Gary sang on that. He’s an amazing Roger Daltrey when he wants to be.

How does Billy even do it, he plays on so many projects. He has incredible energy. He does have incredible energy and I can’t explain it but it is inspiring to be around him.

As you said things have changed and while in the 90s you may have had bigger concerts with this band, you weren’t doing so many other things as well … These days, as musicians you are a little bit more in charge of your own destiny, which is nice in a way. As an artist you have a lot more control but at the same time, everybody’s gotta sleep! You get to the end of the day and it’s like, man I wish I had 4 more hours to do stuff. I’ve finally started drinking coffee, so that’s my gateway drug.

Congratulations for holding that off for so long … it’s a wonderful thing to find later in life isn’t it? It’s wonderful until you discover caffeine withdrawals. My god, I have never been so grouchy in my life! I know better now … keep my dose consistent.

Let’s talk gear for a minute. Obviously you’ve been using Marshalls for a long time … what kind of rig will you be bringing down here for the tour? I actually just finished my pedalboard. Every tour starts with a pedal board and it evolves as it goes. I really like the vintage style of Marshall with 4 inputs because I usually use the second input, it is not quite as trebly. If I need treble, I can get it. You just crank something up on a pedal and it’s there. It is much easier to add it than it is to take it away. Some of the more modern heavy metal Marshalls … at least yo my ears … they are not as warm as the older ones. With those, I have treble if I want it and also I can keep it a little warmer if I want it. I just run them clean and get all the distortion from my pedalboard and that way, wherever we fly I get a pretty consistent tone.

extreme band australian tour

I have seen you using that little guy, it must be a bit of fun? It’s a lot of fun. I have big hands anyway but if you play a guitar with a short neck … if you want to know what it feels like to play guitar with big hands … use these. Also the tension, you can bend anything and it really is a fun thing to fool around on. I have had so many signature models over the years and I have a new one coming out, it’s top secret but it will be coming out next year.

How many guitars will you bring out here with you? I will figure that out when I fly out on Tuesday. At least two. I could probably squeeze as many as six depending on how many cases but you get charged for the excess bags. I can make it happen with two. The one on the stand I like to use for solos sometimes and it’s got three strings and I do this weird octave thing with it.

How are the ears holding up? Oh I am very deaf but If anything it has almost improved my musical abilities, at least I think so. I really have to know what I am doing now. It’s almost like a blind person who has to know their surroundings really well. They have to know where all the furniture is. It’s the same thing when you’re deaf, you have to know where the notes are because you can’t find them by ear, you have to know them internally. My internal sense of music has improved a lot and it’s kind of a joy to have it like that. If anything it’s harder to talk to people, so I have headphones and hearing aids and all of that. Thankfully you have a frequency in your voice which is easy for me to comprehend.

You were with Mr Big for what seems like a short time and then you had a very long vacation from it … It was 8 years so not that short but look at the Beatles, their entire recording period spanned 7 years. I guess I had this fantasy that I could go off and be this singing pop star in Japan. It’s arguable whether that happened or not but I’m glad I could try. It would have been something that gnawed at me if I hadn’t tried, it’s nice to have a swing sometimes. Even if you missed, you know that you went out to bat and swung.

Self imposed rules within the band are so different now to what they were then. Then, we were busy establishing the band. Mr Big didn’t exist and we wanted it to exist and we wanted it to be great. We really tried to limit ourselves as far as other projects and we accomplished our mission. We became an established band but at the same time we felt a bit constricted. Look at Billy … back in the day he was like, we should only be doing Mr Big, other projects are just going to take away from it. Now look at him, he’s involved in an enormous amount of projects. So I am glad that rule is no longer a rule. We do Mr Big when we can, we enjoy it but we can do other stuff and it is all cool.

extreme band australian tour

How was it when you got back into it with the band? The thing that got the band back together was that Billy asked me to play a solo on one of his solo albums and we had fun in the studio doing that and it got the ball rolling in a good way. Then I was doing a solo show and I invited the guys down, we jammed a bit and it just happened naturally. When we finally got together and decided, yes let’s do this, it was so much better and more fun than it had been. We were more accepting of each other, it was fun to play the music again and it was really nice.

The last couple of albums have been a little bit different. I really dig the last album which to me sounded the most raw, organic and little bit different sounding to the others … Well that is all subjective. I hear the songs mostly on stage. I hear the songs live more than I listen to the studio versions so i don’t really have an objective sense of what the records sound like. When I think of a song, I think of the live version because that is what I experience the most.

I think you guys must have the record for the most live albums compared to studio albums of any band I know … I think that’s began because in Japan … cos originally we were always in Japan … back then it was late 80s early 90s and the recording process back then took a long time. It wasn’t like in the 60s where the Beatles would do an album in day and I think it is getting back to that again now but in the late 80s early 90s at the peak of indulgence, it would take so long to do a studio album. The record company in Japan would be like .. your fans … they need something! We’d have some live tracks and say to them, well we have this and they’d be like, great, let’s do that. We’re proud of them though, they were good selling records.

What’s next for you in terms of projects? I have just announced a Pledge Music record that I am doing. It is going to be out in September and will be called Behold Electric Guitar . If you go to Pledge Music and type in my name. it’s not only that but I found a very old Racer X-era rehearsal tape of just me. I showed up earlier (to the studio) than the other guys and it’s just me playing the most frightening, face melting shred guitar for an hour. I have a cassette of this and I didn’t even know if it would play but it transferred great to digital and that is available as a download too. It’s title is Vernon Solos because it was recorded in Vernon, California where the rehearsal studio was. It’s probably 30 years old and really at the height of my athletic powers. I’ll be doing some solo touring of the states at the end of the year too.

Thanks for your time Paul and we can’t wait to see you guys here No problem, we’re looking forward to it.

CONCERT REVIEW: EXTREME Transcends Space and Time at Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading, PA (August 8th, 2023)

extreme band australian tour

Extreme ‘s headlining Thicker Than Blood World Tour kicked off in the US on August 2nd in Portland, and will conclude on December 16th in Italy, with shows in Australia, Japan, and Europe along the way. Their show at the Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading, PA, was the band’s fifth stop.

Gary Cherone [vocals], Nuno Bettencourt [guitar], Pat Badger [bass], and Kevin Figueiredo [drums]are touring in support of their chart-topping new album “Six” . In the US alone, “Six” has charted on five different Billboard charts, including Top Hard Rock Albums, #2; Top Album Sales and Top Current Album Sales, #10; Independent Albums, #14; Artist Top 100, #42 and Top 200, #67. “Six” is a godsend to the hard rock world. It is modern-vintage, ripe with unforgettable songs, roaring guitars, and fiery melodies. There are killer hard rock tracks, a few dark & stormy tracks, and a track that will put a smile on your face! If you put all songs into a musical blender and turn it up to high, you get Extreme “Six” .

Being the first new music from the band in 15 years, don’t think for one minute this is a comeback, as Extreme has never left and have no signs of slowing down. I asked Gary if fans would have to wait another 15 years for their next album; he laughed and said, “We already have songs recorded for the next release”

In Reading, PA, on a hot steamy night, Extreme came to rock hard and sounded ferocious. Aggression wins out over sentimentalism with their smoking-hot songs that are too powerful and passionate for even one audience member to show signs of tiredness. They hit the ground running with “#Rebel,” caught their collective breath, and decimated the crowd with “Decadence Dance.” Gary ‘s magnetic stage presence, Nuno ‘s guitar heroics, Pat ‘s pounding rhythms, and Kevin ‘s sonic thunder resulted in a compelling mix of rock & roll meets the Flying Wallendas. There was no safety net as rock & roll is supposed to be dangerous!

extreme band australian tour

The band delivered a tremendous medley of songs that put them on the map within the 80s’ “Teachers Pet.” “Wind Me Up,” “Flesh n’ Blood,” and “Kid Ego.” They didn’t forget the 90s with “Cupid’s Dead,” “Rest in Peace,” and “Tragic Comic.” Highlights included when Kevin moved his drum kit to center stage while Nuno performed acoustical with his Washburn 12-string guitar to “Hole Hearted” and “ Other Side of the Rainbow.”

In the final stretch of their 2 ½ hour show, the most emotionally compelling song of the night came when they performed the brassy “More Than Words” as Nuno and Gary sat on stools to deliver the heart-wrenching love song. Prior to that, Nuno gave the fans “Midnight Express” while he tore up his acoustic guitar.

Gary did a remarkable job singing while he flew around the stage, sliding, spinning, and twirling his mic stand like a phallic baton. Like a pent-up tiger let out of his cage, he circled the stage singing every song with heart and soul. It’s almost as if he is processing the lyrics in real-time and conveying them to the audience. He is the consummate showman and performed for all the fans in the back of the venue.

extreme band australian tour

Nuno ‘s guitar playing and stage acrobats were amazing, even with his right knee in a brace from an earlier injury this year. Like a fine wine, as he and the entire band are only getting better with time. He epitomizes sheer effortless virtuosity making his fiery fret-burning hammer-ons and alternate-picking look easy. The range of sounds he produced in his solos was impressive. His two-handed tapping arpeggios on “Get the Funk Out” was legendary to watch and awe-inspiring. His entire performance was a dazzling display of guitar-playing wizardry. Fans had to take a bow to the new guitar king.

Pat is the sonic ambassador between the rhythm of Kevin ‘s drumming and Nuno ‘s guitar playing. Kevin laid down a solid driving beat like a runaway train, while Pat was an unstoppable force with fingers flying at break-neck speed while taking on all the backing vocals. During their performance, they were in lockstep on every beat at the exact moment giving the band their tight sound. These little things make all the difference in a live show.

A song written and designed to showcase Nuno ‘s knob-whirling volume swells, phase-shifting prowess, epic delay, and whammy-bar fiddlin’ was “ Am I Ever Gonna Change,” as it was equally as fun to watch as to listen to. Of course, no Extreme show would be complete without Nuno performing “Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee.” In total, the band also performed five new songs off “Six” ,  and closed the show with “Rise” and its explosive guitar solo.

extreme band australian tour

Fans have been starved for great hard rock, and Extreme fits the bill as they were present in-the-moment from the beginning to the middle to the end of the show. They have remained one of rock’s most unpredictable, undeniable, and unbreakable bands. The essence of them is their brotherhood which creates their fantastic music and drives their energetic live performance. Here’s to the winners! Their rabid Pennsylvania fans continuously showered them with gratitude and heartfelt applause as Nuno continually thanked them for helping reignite their career. In return, the band gave them an unforgettable concert.

There are still more shows available to see Extreme ; please check out the website for a show near you.
