Traveling with dialysis
Diets for ckd and esrd.
A. What you should eat—and how much—depends on the stage of CKD you are in and how well your kidneys are working. Check with your doctor or renal dietitian, to find out the specific dietary requirements for your kidney condition. However, in general, you’ll need to:
- Lighten up on protein, especially if you have stage 3 or 4 CKD.
- Shake off the salt—sodium can have a negative effect on your kidneys and raise your blood pressure.
- Watch out for too much phosphorus—it’s a mineral found in many foods, which helps control your heartbeat. When you have CKD, too much phosphorus can build up in your kidneys.
Living with dialysis
- Speak with your social worker—he or she can educate you on all the ways you can build support
- Get the word out to friends and family— have a conversation with those closest to you and consider the power of social media for getting the word out to larger groups of friends and acquaintances
- Build and join support groups—ask your social worker for tips on finding or starting a support group

Jack Burns asked a question.
We have traveled quite a bit over the years. Short weekend trips, longer vacation trips and even longer trips in a travel trailer. We always make sure to order supplies 60 days in advance and communication with our team is key. If having supplies delivered we set them up to be delivered a few days before we get there. We call to make sure they have arrived and even have then take a picture and email it to me so I can physically see it is there. We always pack extra ancillary supplies just incase...it is important to be prepared for anything. Make sure when it comes to actually doing treatment make sure you are as comfy as possible. We prefer a recliner over a bed or couch, but can make anything work. Once we camped in a tent and ran our cycler off a generator at a motorcycle rally and my husband sat in a zero gravity reclining lawn chair, it worked great.
Doing PD vs home hemo is a little different esp.the weight of the machine, but on supplies You are spot on,. If I was still doing home hemo, the only way l would travel is in a top of the line RV
saturnflame
What size generator did you use to run the dialysis machine?
Do you stay in hotels or private properties? If hotels, who receives the supplies and where do they hold them? Any international trips?
Domestic hotels. Get a point of contact person and phone number. One hotel held supplies at front desk while another hotel put them in our room before we arrived.
ShivaSuryan
People on peritoneal dialysis (PD) may have an easier time traveling because their treatments may not require access to a machine if they are able to perform manual dialysis exchanges, and the necessary supplies are smaller, more portable and can be delivered anywhere in the continental United States.
Here are some things to think about when you travel on PD:
- Pack an adequate amount of supplies and any necessary medications in a safe and easily accessible way.
- Work with your dialysis supplier to have dialysate delivered to your destination.
- Make a special first aid kit to carry with you that includes two days’ worth of essential supplies to help prepare for any unforeseen circumstances, such as a baggage delay when traveling by plane.
- If traveling by air, make certain that your carry-on baggage meets security and airline regulation well in advance.
I just started traveling. I went to two different states and hotels. Baxter is very efficient at delivering solutions where ever you are going, just give them an address and point of contact. I carry my supplies in carry on in case luggage gets lost. The hardest part is putting that carry on machine in the overhead bin, but after a few plane changes, it became easier as I knew how to handle it. My question is, I want to travel overseas and flights are long with sometimes delays and cancellations or unanticipated overnight stays at an airport. With no solutions available, what does one do?
Had a long conversation
with the head nurse at my facility. They will set up and do it all for you for in center dialysis they will find one close to you - they are all over! they will even use Davita if they have to. we are waiting for Fistula to be fully operational though. This surprise catheter is not fun for showers, dressing etc.
Yes we have done this 3 separate times - great like your on vacation too! no worries about any supplies
two more big trips coming up to work on.
we went back in center this week (home was not for us)
