13 Best Places to Visit for Halloween Around the World

From Mexico to Romania, here are 13 of the best places to visit for Halloween.

fun places to visit on halloween

The spooky season is almost here, and there's no better way to honor it than with a trip to a place primed and ready to celebrate ghosts and goblins.

Now's the time to lean into sweater season, the changing leaves, and all things pumpkin — both flavored and decor related. And don't worry — just because it's Halloween doesn't mean you always need to be in for a fright. Here are 13 spooky and fun places to visit for Halloween around the globe.

Salem, Massachusetts

It's almost impossible to separate Salem from Halloween. The coastal Massachusetts community was the site of the Salem Witch Trials, beginning in 1692, which led to the hanging of 19 men and women. It's a place where the air is thick with spirits, but around Halloween, it's a destination filled with merriment too. Each October, the town puts on Salem Haunted Happenings, which includes a parade, film nights, a costume ball, and more, and you're all invited to join .

London, England

London has all the historical trappings needed for an epic Halloween season. It's a place brimming with ghost stories, and the best spot to experience this to the fullest is the Tower of London . It was here that several notable figures were put to death, including Anne Boleyn, the former Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, who is said to still roam the halls. Visitors can tour the Tower of London any time of year, but it's just got that extra spooky feeling in October. Visit for a Twilight Tour for an eerie vibe.

Boyne Valley, Ireland

What better place to celebrate Halloween than in the place where it began? As History.com explains, the Halloween tradition began with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain . At the time of its origin, people would wear costumes to ward off ghosts, which means not much has changed (though we're sure they didn't have allegiances to different candy at the time). Now Ireland celebrates with festivals throughout the month of October, including the Púca Halloween Festival , which honors the Celtic new year with music, art, and plenty of sweet treats.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities are serious business in Oaxaca. Though it's a festival for the dead, it's by no means a horror show. As Travel + Leisure previously explained, the event is in honor of those who've passed from this world to the next and is a way to keep their spirit alive today. The celebration takes place over two days, with families decorating the graves of their deceased loved ones and crafting ornate altars at home to further honor them. Travelers can join the revelry in the form of parades and parties throughout the town of San Miguel de Allende, which keeps the festivities going through November 2.

Transylvania, Romania

As the home of Count Dracula, Transylvania has a lot to live up to during the Halloween season, but it more than delivers on its spooky offerings. Travelers to Transylvania can visit Bran Castle , the home of the mythical count, which is open every day for tours. The castle even hosts a yearly Halloween bash that includes a nighttime tour, a party, and an open bar.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a town known for its revelry. Yes, its Mardi Gras celebrations are second to none, but its Halloween parties aren't too shabby either. In October, the city busts out its decorations and its best costumes for parades and parties galore. Don't miss the ghost tours in the French Quarter if you're looking to send a few shivers down your spine before joining the festivities.

Paris, France

Looking for a Halloween event that's très chic? Head to Paris. The City of Lights may not be the place where you'll find the typical trick-or-treat crowd, but what you will find is La Toussaint , or All Saints' Day, a day to remember friends and family who have passed, which is both a national and Catholic holiday. Like Day of the Dead in Mexico, families take this day to honor their loved ones by visiting their graves and placing flowers on top. There are more light-hearted events throughout the city, including parties at Disneyland Paris and Le Manoir de Paris, arguably the biggest and coolest haunted house in Europe.

Scotland, like Ireland, has strong ties to Halloween's past. As Visit Scotland explained, the name Halloween comes from the Scottish shortening of "All Hallows' Eve." While you can certainly attend any number of events to honor the day, for a longer journey, try exploring the nation's Ghost Trail, a map of 15 locations around the nation that are said to be some of the most haunted spots on the planet. End the tour at the Samhuinn Fire Festival in Edinburgh for a delightful conclusion.

Venice and Borgo a Mozzano, Italy

Italy isn't exactly a Halloween-crazed nation, but one place you'll find plenty of ghoulish fun is in Venice. It too is a destination well-known among the ghost hunting circuit, especially on the island Poveglia. The island once acted as a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague and was even used as an insane asylum in the early 20th century, making it an absolute hub for paranormal activity. As for the parties, you'll have to head to the town of Borgo a Mozzano, which sits just north of Lucca. There, you'll find a massive annual Halloween bash on the appropriately named Devil's Bridge .

Hong Kong loves a good party, and Halloween is no exception. Like other destinations on this list, it's not really a place where you'll find trick-or-treaters on the street, but you will find festive events nonetheless, especially in places like Hong Kong Disneyland , which goes toe-to-toe with its global counterparts for the season. Hong Kong's other theme park, Ocean Park , also throws an annual bash that's not to be missed, and you'll typically find a plethora of happenings in Lan Kwai Fong, the city's famed party district, that are all worthy of a visit (though things have been uncharacteristically quiet here due to the pandemic, it appears that may be changing .)

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is the place to go in the U.S. if you want to be almost guaranteed a ghost sighting. The southern city is brimming with ghost stories thanks to haunted hotels, buildings, bars, and more, which can all be experienced through its plentiful ghost tours. Because of its connection to the spirits, Savannah is a stellar place to go for epic trick-or-treating for kids and parties for adults. See all of the city's event listings here to stay up-to-date on yearly happenings.

Prague, Czech Republic

Halloween is quickly becoming a more popular holiday in Prague thanks to the growing expat community. Though you'll only find a very sparse trick-or-treating scene, it's a place filled with gothic architecture that feels both utterly romantic and absolutely spooky all at once. The city is even home to a torture museum , which is absolutely more terrfying to visit than any fake haunted house in your home town.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels may not have a long history with Halloween, but it sure has dedicated itself to becoming a Halloween hotspot in recent years. The city hosts parades in Saint-Gilles , and several bars and restaurants host their own gatherings. None, however, are as spooky as Le Cercueil , which translates to "coffins" in French. The bar is spooky all year long and those visiting can toast over a table made from a coffin, one of which comes with clear plexiglass so you can see the skeleton inside.

With the festival also including flicks in dark fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, dark comedy, and thriller, it definitely covers the scope of what horror films can be. A Nightmare Before Christmas director, Henry Selick, spoke at 2015's festival and confirmed that the Tim Burton-produced classic is, in fact, a Halloween movie, not a Christmas movie.

Part of America's Historic Triangle , the three communities have Halloween events that addresses everyone in the family. But if you're going to Orlando with kids, the full-force terror at Universal may not be the most family-friendly. Instead, head over to Walt Disney World Resort for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ! Running from mid-August to early November, kids can enjoy the holiday without being overwhelmed by the more terrifying parts of Halloween. Fun for kids includes trick-or-treating, Disney character meet-and-greets, stage performances, and fireworks.

Sunday, October 31. Halloween is not an official bank holiday, so there is traditionally no associated time off from work and school. Some businesses may close early to allow employees a chance to enjoy themselves; however, this is the exception and not the rule. Some cities, towns, or individual neighborhoods elect to organize Halloween-related events on the Friday and Saturday before the actual holiday specifically so as not to interview with work and school schedules.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

The legacy of Salem, Massachusetts is inextricably bound up with the events that occurred in 1692, and that later became known as the Salem Witch Trials. The episode of puritanical mass hysteria resulted in hundreds of accusations, 30 convictions, and at least 19 directly related executions. Today, the town commemorates this dark chapter with several memories and museums dedicated to shining a light on exactly what occurred and why. Given their association with Halloween, Salem’s connection to witches and witchcraft make it a perennially popular destination. Make sure to visit the Witch House, the Witch Dungeon Museum, the Salem Witch Museum, and the Salem Witch Village. There’s normally plenty of Halloween-related activities and promotions on offer in Salem. This is one place you won’t be lacking for things to enjoy.

Sleepy Hollow is where Ichabod Crane, the protagonist in Washington Irving's classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , encounters the fabled Headless Horseman. The real Sleepy Hollow is a charming little town set along the Hudson River roughly an hour's drive north from Lower Manhattan. Explore the town to visit the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, Philipsburg Manor, and the gorgeous Sleepy Hollow itself. The densely wooded area is filled with many paths and open fields. Wander through Sleepy Hollow cemetery where you will find Washington Irving’s grave along with that of Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller. Flee towards town as darkness draws nigh and make sure you’re across the Headless Horseman Bridge with plenty of time to spare. This is a frighteningly good Halloween destination.

Savannah bills itself as "America’s most haunted city." Its antebellum architecture features plenty of locations you would not be at all surprised to see in a horror film. Art lovers will thoroughly enjoy the broad range of artistic styles and tastes on display in Savannah. Visit the Mercer Williams House Museum to see the mansion vividly portrayed in John Berendt's bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil . Afterwards, work your way towards the river and the Savannah City Market. Often described as Savannah's "art and soul," the galleries here are a must-see. Finally, allow yourself some time to explore this most Southern of towns and draw in its wonderful artistic sensibilities. Spend some time walking the cobblestones on River Street and pay a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. The 19th-century Roman Catholic Church is a great example of neo-gothic design, especially the lovely stained glass windows.

Best known for Colonial Williamsburg, the living-history museum dedicated to preserving the life and times of America’s Revolutionary era, Williamsburg is no slouch when it comes to Halloween. Colonial Williamsburg dresses itself up and offers a range of fun activities including a ghost story tour. Accompany your guide through the historic village and learn about local witch trials. Other tours take guests around to various properties rumored to be haunted at one time or another. The city’s lovely colonial era architecture makes for a fun adventure any time of year. Make sure you visit prominent locations like the Governor’s Palace, a pre-Revolutionary mansion that was home to British royals. Depending on your travel plans, you can elect to stay in Williamsburg proper or make the short drive up from Hampton or Norfolk.

The "Big Easy" is no stranger to a great Halloween party. New Orleans is home to many a shop and museum featuring zombies, spooks, and voodoo dolls. Though fun for Halloween, voodoo has a long and storied history among Afro-Caribbean peoples extending far beyond the notions of possession and spirits. Do yourself a favor and link up with a tour that will help you explore the true meaning of voodoo culture. Another popular Halloween activity is to visit the city’s famous cemeteries. Given its location and high groundwater table, New Orleans has long had to bury its dead aboveground. The city’s famous final resting places are popular on Halloween and include the historic Greenwood Cemetery. Spend some time wandering around the elaborate sarcophagi, but be on the lookout in case the Bone Man comes calling. Finish out the night in the famed French Quarter.

During Halloween, Greenfield Village, the Dearborn’s sprawling open-air history museum, breaks out the jack-o’-lanterns. Over a 1,000 often-intricately decorated pumpkins bring joy and amazement to young and old alike. Greenfield Village is a great place to visit and the neighboring Henry Ford Museum is filled with interactive exhibits that include many cars and a collection of classic steam locomotives. The museum occupies a site on what was once Ford’s iconic River Rouge Complex. The sprawling museum and attractions at Greenfield Village will give you plenty to explore. Be on the lookout for the Headless Horseman and don’t forget to grab yourself some delicious apple cider and doughnuts. On crisp fall days in Lower Michigan, hot apple cider is a real treat! If you have some extra time to budget, wander over to neighboring Detroit.

"Here’s Johnny!" Anyone old enough to remember Jack Nicholson’s bone-chilling performance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining can readily attest to the film’s cultural impact. The film was an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name. King found inspiration for the novel’s location in the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Offering spectacular panoramic views of Lake Estes and the nearby Rocky Mountain peaks, the Stanley Hotel is an absolute classic. There's also a musume of classic cars. Estes Park itself serves at the gateway into nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. A UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve, Rocky Mountain National Park contains a multitude of species, scenic hiking trails, river recreation, phenomenal camping, and more. Particularly now when safe and affordable vacation destinations are scarce, you’ll find the wide-open spaces a welcome relief from months of pent-up coronavirus-induced frustrations. Treat yourself with a stay at the Stanley Hotel and you’ll have a Halloween to remember.

Vegas can be a downright scary place year round, but Halloween is something else altogether. Ditch the glitz and glamour found along the Strip and head down to the Fremont Street Experience. Freemont turns into a veritable vampire's ball. Celebrate Halloween Vegas-style with live music entertainment, costume contests, and the chance to win to some serious cash. Freemont is an innovative re-imagination of classic Downtown Las Vegas. Before there was the Strip, this is where the action was. Once known as Glitter Gulch, classic casinos like the Golden Nugget and the Horseshoe were located here. Following extensive redevelopment, Fremont Street is now a popular performance venue. Under a barrel vault canopy, visitors can take a ride on the zip line or hunt for souvenirs. You’ll find plenty to see and do along Freemont Street during Halloween. Come on down and work up a grove as you dance the Monster Mash late into the night.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Besides trick or treating, here are several ways to have some wholesome fun this Halloween.

  • Plan a visit to your local pumpkin patch, orchard, or corn maize. Many of these locations love to do Halloween-themed events. Find out ahead of time whether the corn maize is built with one-way paths. This will help you avoid coming into overly close contact with other people. Be cautious when handling fruits at the orchard or pumpkins at the pumpkin patch. It’s normal for lots of people to want to touch things so keep a bottle of hand sanitizer at the ready and use it frequently.
  • Invite your neighbors to take part in a local costume parade or contest. Make sure to hold it outside so people can maintain a suitable distance.
  • Have a pumpkin-carving contest at your local park. These fun events don’t require confined spaces and would be appropriate to do provided you adopt some minimal safeguards.

There are plenty of ways to have a safe and spooky Halloween. Make sure you do a bit of planning ahead of time, especially if you want to travel to one of our featured destinations.

The best places to celebrate Halloween in the US

fun places to visit on halloween

New York City’s famed Village Halloween Parade bursts with creativity and fun © Johannes Eisele / AFP via Getty Images)

While a large portion of the world considers Halloween to be largely for children, Americans of all ages take the holiday very seriously.

Starting as early as September, cities begin hosting their favorite eerie events designed to celebrate all things spooky – and most everyone takes part.

Across the USA this haunted season, you can discover Halloween events that are equal parts charming and creepy. Here are some of our favorite places to celebrate all things ghostly, macabre and just plain fabulous.

The Annual Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson, New York

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Penned by Washington Irving in 1820, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” has permeated popular Halloween culture for literally centuries. Lucky for us, the town at the center of the story is very real and comes alive for a month-long Halloween celebration.

Take a tour of the historic cemetery by lantern light to learn about Irving and other notable citizens, or head over to the historic Philipsburg Manor, which is converted into a terrifying haunt known as Horseman’s Hollow .

If pumpkins are your thing, don’t miss the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze , which features over 7000 carved gourds, the Museum of Pumpkin Art and even a pumpkin windmill.

Revelers during the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Salem, Massachusetts

As the epicenter of the grim witch trials of the late 1600s, Salem , Massachusetts , sits at the heart of the country’s most visceral Halloween lore. Its heritage played a starring role in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus , and its fame has led people from all over to make the pilgrimage to this haunted spot year-round.

Visiting Salem during October, however, delivers a special type of energy, as the town embraces the year’s biggest opportunity to delve into its history. Take a candle-lit haunted tour of the city; visit the Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum ; dive into the world of the unknown at the Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo ; and top it all off by attending the annual Witches Ball , a masquerade held at the historic Hawthorne Hotel .

A large float with a huge Dracula figure at the front is illuminated by a strong of light bulbs. People dressed in elaborate costumes throw items off the float to people on the street.

New Orleans, Louisiana

It’s no secret that New Orleans can throw a party like nowhere else – a talent that’s not limited to Mardi Gras in February. Many regard the city as one of the most haunted in the country: ghost tours abound throughout the year, making Halloween a particularly important time here. Hit the French Quarter during October for a supernatural celebration called  Krewe of Boo! , which brings Mardi Gras–esque flair to the spooky season.

The parade features what New Orleans does best – with a ghoulish twist: think hand-crafted floats, costumed bands, dancers and even beads (locally sourced and make an effort to be environmentally friendly). The Krewe also hosts an annual Zombie Run , where zombies take to the streets like a scene out of World War Z .

Revellers march in costumes during the 49th Annual Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, New York, New York, USA

New York, New York

Head to any US city with an art-house movie theater in October and you’ll find a live-action showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show , complete with costumes, props, callbacks from the audience and a three-dimensional cast shadowing the on-screen antics.

This tradition began in  New York City at the now-defunct Waverly Theater – and continues today through the work of the  NYC Rocky Horror  troupe. Check their website to see where they’ll be doing the “Time Warp” next.

While you’re in town, don’t miss the famous Village Halloween Parade , famed for its creativity and sheer size. Watch (or join in!) as giant puppets make their way through the neighborhood, and costumed revelers jam to dozens of ambulatory bands playing music of all genres.

A green witch float in the Sea Witch Festival parade, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, USA

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Not all witches dwell on land, it turns out. If your vibe skews nautical, don your seaweed and celebrate Halloween with your seafaring brethren at the Sea Witch Festival in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware . Festivities include Halloween staples like a parade and costume contest, but also ocean-inflected events like a haunted bonfire, coastal wildlife seminars, a trick-or-treat for kids on the beach, and a scavenger hunt for the sea witch herself.

50 Spooktacular Towns Across America

A chill in the air marks the last gasps of summer as Halloween slides into America’s cultural spotlight. For some, spooky season is a precursor to the holiday season, a frightening introduction to the long nights that winter brings. But for others, Halloween is a reason to celebrate.

Halloween means costumes, candy and celebrations of storytelling. It means ghost stories told over the flicker of firelight tinged by the flavor of melting s’mores. And in big cities and small towns across the country, this supernatural holiday has carved its way into our hearts like the soft glow of a jack-o’-lantern grinning into the night.

From coast to coast and occasionally beyond, these are the best places to celebrate Halloween in each state.

Where does Halloween come from?

Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic celebration, Samhain, and was celebrated in Britain and Ireland. The festival celebrates the end of the harvest and the coming of shorter days. It is one of four Gaelic season festivals. The Celts would gather around ancient passage tombs, which were considered by some to be portals to the Otherworld. During this time, it was thought that the barrier between worlds was thinned, and spirits were able to cross between realms.

The festivals included bonfires, dancing, costumes, sacrifices, and feasting. Most of our Halloween customs have evolved out of these ritual festivities. Costume parties and trick-or-treating antics were primary a British and American thing for a long time, but now the festivities have spread to countries all around the world.

The Best 15 Places to Travel for Halloween

Now that we know what we are celebrating, let’s find the best places to do it! While there are haunted cities and sites all over the world, that doesn’t mean they are good travel destinations. In this travel guide, we have gathered haunted cities that have well-established Halloween festivities. Our picks have plenty of ghost tours, haunted houses, and Halloween festivities to help you celebrate the season right! Some are over-the-top frightening. Others are totally family-friendly. Here are our top 15 best Halloween travel destinations!

1. Salem, Massachusetts

Home of the infamous Salem Witch Trials, Salem is one of the creepiest places in the USA. Twenty-six local women were hung here after gruesomely unfair trials. Now, the city celebrates witches year-round, but it’s over during the “Haunted Happenings” celebration in the month of October. The little city comes alive with fireworks, parades, costume contests, and execution reenactments.

Visitors can explore the Salem Witch Museum, housed in the former home of Judge Jonathon Corwin, one of the judges responsible for the guilty verdicts. On Halloween night, magic shows, séances, and even a witch’s ball keep the celebrations going late into the night!

Let’s Roam has gathered all the best, haunted sights into one iconic Salem ghost tour ! You’ll visit Howard Cemetery, the John Ward House, and the Bewitched Sculpture, among other haunted spots. Answer our trivia questions and compete for the top spot in fun photo and video challenges. Our scavenger hunt app is easy to use and filled with spooky adventures, as well as hundreds of other scavenger hunts, bar crawls, and art walks around the world!

2. Transylvania, Romania

Transylvania is a mystical land of fairytale castles set in the misty mountains. It is the home of Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian ruler on which Dracula was partially based. Bran Castle is known as Dracula’s Castle. It was not and has nothing to do with him, but the castle does have a pretty amazing setting that lends itself to creepiness. The castle is vampire-mania year-round, but it certainly elevates during the Halloween season. The castle offers guided Halloween tours, laced with Transylvanian lure. You can visit the childhood home of Vlad the Impaler, complete with a torture museum, in nearby Sighisoara.

While in the area, you should also visit Cluj-Napoca. Not only is it another hauntingly beautiful Transylvanian mountain town, but it is also home to the Hoai-Baciu Forest, one of the spookiest places on the planet. The forest is a mass of twisted, gnarly trees, that are always shrouded in mist. The forest is known as the “Bermuda Triangle of Romania,” as there are countless local tales of persons disappearing into the forest under mysterious circumstances, as well as a large number of UFO sightings. One look at this forest, and you will understand why it is so steeped in legend. It is seriously a creepy place.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is primarily known for Mardi Gras, but it is also the most haunted city in the United States. With the heavy influx of early Black African religions from the Caribbean, New Orleans has always been one of the hubs for voodoo practitioners in the United States. The streets of the French Quarter are lined with voodoo shops to peruse if you are so inclined.

Visit the LaLaurie Mansion, home of the infamously cruel serial killer Madame Delphine LaLaurie. Dawn your best costume and join the Halloween street party on Frenchman Street. Tour some of the scariest haunted houses in the world. Watch the Krewe of Boo Parade, take a guided tour of The Gardette-LaPrete Mansion, home to the largest mass slaying in New Orleans history, tour the hauntingly beautiful, world-famous cemeteries, and of course learn all about this city of ghosts and goblins on our app-lead New Orleans ghost tour!

4. London, England

The dark, gloomy cobblestone streets of London provide the perfect ambiance for ghost stories and haunted tours. Jack the Ripper found the streets of White Hall an ideal hunting ground to complete his dirty deeds, and the Tower of London was known for its brutal torture tactics and numerous executions. The city celebrates Halloween big, and there is an abundance of ghost tours and Halloween events in the city.

Visit the London Dungeon, which recreates a series of the city’s most macabre stories, including that of Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd. Take a tour of the Tower of London. Book a nighttime Jack the Ripper walking tour to revisit the infamous murder sites. Visit the site of William Wallace’s execution, or take the train out to Hampton Court Palace, which is reportedly haunted by two of Henry VIII’s wives. Descend below the bridge for the haunted London Bridge Experience and London Tombs, where you will find your way through an underground maze filled with famous, nefarious characters. Top off your week with a showing of the gothic romance, Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre. There is so much to do in London for Halloween that your only issue will be narrowing down the options.

5. Edinburgh, Scotland

Another city steeped in fog and shadowed by rain clouds, is the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the city where the Harry Potter series was written, and many of the key locations in the stories are based on Edinburgh icons. Harry Potter walking tours are popular here, as well as too many walking ghost tours to count.

Take a guided tour of Real Mary King’s Close and the seedy underworld vaults of Edinburgh. If you prefer your antics a bit more lighthearted, then hop on the Comedy Horror Ghost Bus Tour. The Edinburgh Dungeon is very similar to London’s with scary rides and local ghost stories.

The Samhuinn Fire Parade is a special event thrown in Old Town, on Halloween night. It consists of a dramatic battle between the Kings of Summer and Winter. The winner is decided by Cailleach, a Celtic goddess. The festival is meant to usher in winter and includes wild performances, music, dance, and lots of fabulous costumes.

6. Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca is a stunning city in Southwest Mexico, and it’s famous for stunning cathedrals and fabulous cuisine. The day after traditional Halloween, the city is transformed for Day of the Dead celebrations. Dia de Los Muertos is a time to celebrate and honor dead loved ones. Personal shrines are set up in homes and businesses, with elaborate displays of flowers and candles. The celebrations overflow into the streets with lavish parades, full of fanciful dancers with intricately painted faces. The party concludes in the main square and continues all night long!

7. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has a long history of violence from the hay day of the mob to modern-day gang rivalries. Old school gangsters filled the waterways with the bodies of their victims, and paranormal believers tell stories of screams echoing out from the Clark Street Bridge. Clark street is where the infamous Valentine’s Day Massacre took place, and it is said to be the home of several apparitions. You can hang out on Archer Avenue and offer a ride to the “vanishing hitchhiker.” John Dillinger’s ghost haunts the alley next to his death site at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater. Even Lincoln Park used to be a cemetery and is reported to have frequent paranormal activity.

For a thoroughly spooky tour of the “Windy City,” check out our Chicago ghost hunt! You’ll explore the paranormal culture and history of Iroquois Theater, Hancock Center, and much more on this ghoulish journey through one of America’s most haunted cities.

8. Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka Springs is a small town in the Ozark Mountains that happens to be home to “America’s most haunted hotel,” the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa . In its long history, the gorgeous, old, mountaintop hotel has served as both a girls’ college and a hospital… both fodder for paranormal activity! The hotel staff does a daily ghost tour, and they even host an annual paranormal event for researchers from all over the world called the Eureka Springs Paranormal Weekend. Most of the ghosts are friendly and tend to stay in their room or area. The hotel is still a working getaway for romantic weekends, but don’t be surprised if your lover’s weekend turns out to be a threesome.

Eureka Springs is a fun town with lots of quirky shops selling folk art and tasty treats. The food is fantastic. The traditional architecture is quite charming, and you can visit the huge Christ of the Ozarks statue and the gorgeous Thorncrown Chapel, a fairytale glass chapel in the woods. Catch a magic show, or join one of the guided walking ghost tours or underground city tours!

9. Savannah, Georgia

The beautiful Antebellum mansions and dripping Spanish moss are generally seen as charming, but on a foggy autumn evening, they can certainly lean towards spooky! The Old Southern City has a rich (if deplorable, in parts) history, and ghost stories abound about former slaves and Confederate soldiers.

Book a room in one of the haunted hotels, and learn the legends of the area on Let’s Roam’s Savannah ghost tour , where you’ll visit Madison Square, The Pirate’s House, and The Marshal House. Finish off your evening in costume and experience excellent Halloween drink deals on a Congress Street bar crawl.

10. San Francisco, California

Not only is San Francisco an old gold rush town, most of which are creepy, but it is home to one of the eeriest places in America, Alcatraz Prison. A tour of “The Rock” is spooky any time, but a haunted night tour, in the foggy bay, adds a whole nother level of chill. The city, along with its neighbor Los Angeles, is one of the most popular places featured in scary movies.

The 1889 Queen Anne Hotel is gorgeous but notoriously haunted. Mary, apparently a former maid, is often seen going about her duties, but hey, she has a habit of unpacking guests’ bags for them, which is nice. In a city with so many haunted jaunts, it’s hard to know where to. We got you covered! Just download our scavenger hunt app, and explore the best of “The Gold City’s” paranormal past on our “San Francisco Ghost Rush” scavenger hunt !

11. Prague, Czech Republic

Bell-ringing nuns, arguing priests and prostitutes, and a monk’s mistress roam Old Town in Prague, and they aren’t the only ones. Prague has at least 100 known specters and is considered one of the most haunted cities in the world.

Ghost aside, Prague has a plethora of creepy spots. You can take a Medieval dungeon tour, explore the infamously haunted Prague Castle where multiple specters reside, cross over Charles Bridge and look for the 12 headless men, and visit the incredibly creepy Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital and cemetery. In fact, Prague has several spooky old cemeteries.

Top it all off with a stop by Sedlec Ossuary. It’s a Roman Catholic chapel that was built over an ancient cemetery. The bodies were moved into the church and assembled into coats of armor, wall decorations, and a horrific, huge chandelier. The church is thought to house skeletons of between 40 and 70,000 people. Talk about spine-chilling!

12. Sleepy Hollow, New York

It just sounds creepy, doesn’t it? Sleepy Hollow is, of course, the stomping ground of Washington Irving’s Headless Horseman, Ichabod Crane. Rumors abound that locals still see the horseman in The Old Dutch Burying Ground, where Irving himself is buried.

Join a lantern-guided tour of the cemetery. They are offered day and night. The town embraces its heritage on All Hallows Eve. There are hayrides, a street fair, and haunted tours of the town’s Gothic mansions. One such mansion, the Philipsburg Manor, is completely transformed during the month of October to be the realm of the Headless Horseman. The 300-year-old home is filled to the brim with Ichabod’s court of witches, vampires, and soldier zombies.

As you might imagine, Sleepy Hollow gets pretty busy during the holiday, so you might want to book your tours pretty far in advance!

13. Long Beach, California

Long Beach isn’t inherently a spooky place, but they do throw a giant Halloween celebration. It is also home to the Queen Mary cruise liner, which ranks among the most haunted places in the United States.

One of the scariest Halloween celebrations can be found in Long Beach, California. Here, you can check out the most haunted place in the world—the Queen Mary . Docked off Long Beach in California this cruise ship is one of the coolest and most unique places to celebrate Halloween.

Dark Harbor starts on October 1st each year and runs for the entire month offering terrifying experiences to those who dare to visit. This month-long event features six mazes haunted by more than 200 spirits and ghosts, many inspired by the actual spirits that are said to haunt the ship. Visitors should also expect rides, more monsters, live shows, delicious food, and beverages. It’s worth noting, this experience is not for young children and no costumes are allowed other than on Halloween.

14. Orlando, Florida

Orlando is home to the happiest place on earth, right? It’s famous for beaches and Disney World theme parks. Mickey is there. How can it be on this list? Well, Disney just so happens to put on a pretty fantastic, family-friendly, Halloween Party.

“Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party” runs from mid-August through October 31st. There’s a parade, a special show by the three Hocus Pocus sisters, a fireworks show, a dance party, and miles of trick-or-treating trails. It’s a Halloween festival that the whole family can enjoy!

If you want a little adult thrill while in Orlando, you can visit some of the city’s haunted locations like Spook Hill, the Oviedo Lights, or the Enzian Theater. By most standards, even these paranormal hot spots are pretty family-friendly.

As we mentioned above, Ireland is where Halloween originated. Halloween was not a celebration then, it was a day that the ancient celts dressed up in animal skins to ward off evil spirits and avoid being taken away. While not quite the tradition of dressing up as Spiderman or The Squid Game Red Jumpsuit, it did spark the tradition of dressing up. With winter coming, it was often associated with death and it was on this night that they believed the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. It began on the night of October 31 and went into the following day.

Scotland is a close second when it comes to Halloween celebrations. After all, Halloween originated in ancient Celtic times. So in truth, Scotland and Ireland both have the original bragging rights.

Both have similar traditions when it comes to Halloween, both have haunted castles and tombs and both celebrate the Celtic festival known as Samhain (Samhuinn) that was celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to mark the end of the harvest and end of summer. Today it celebrates the night of October 31, with the Samhuinn Fire Festival mixing Celtic traditions with modern entertainment. There’s a battle between the winter and summer kings to mark the beginning of the long dark nights ahead.

Edinburgh, in particular, is considered a haunted spot in Scotland (and all of Europe) with many a ghost tour to join in the historic city and there are plenty of haunted tours taking you to graveyards and underground tombs when you visit the city. When I think of Halloween I always think of Dracula. And what better place than to visit Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania. The Bran Castle, near the city of Brasov, is Romania’s national monument. It may be one of many castles linked to Dracula, but it is definitely the most famous. How did the legend of Dracula begin?

Well, ruler Vlad Tepes was known for his brutality where he impaled, skinned, and boiled those who were against him. He became known as Vlad the Impaler. When you kill upwards of 100,000 people this way, well a gruesome legend is bound to follow.

Laurier House

Visit the Laurier House in Ottawa fro Halloween

The scariest haunted tour we’ve ever taken was at Laurier House. When we went to the Haunting at Laurier House our entire group left the grounds screaming. Laurier House was home to Canadian Prime Minister, Sir Wilfred Laurier who had a particular interest in the spirit world. He held seances there on a regular basis. We had no idea what to expect, but once we entered the mansion, no cameras or video was allowed, and let me just say, it made a believer out of me! Book your haunting (When it opens again) at  Laurier House

Escape Manor

Escape Manor in Ottawa for Halloween

Laurier House isn’t the only creepy thing to do in Ottawa for Halloween, the Escape Manor is a fun and creepy escape room that took us into the Asylum Escape Room where we had to overcome one obstacle after another to get out. Don’t worry, there is an emergency button if you become too scared. There are four different escape rooms at Escape Manor to test your escape artists’ skills.  Book a room here.

If you want a real fright, Try staying over in a jail cell. When the Ottawa Jail closed in 1972 due to its inhumane conditions. Hostelling International purchased and converted it into a hostel allowing people to “spend a night in jail.” Many unmarked graves were found in excavations and it was here that one of the last public hangings (if not the most famous) in Canada took place. It is closed at the moment, but when it comes back, make sure to book this terrifying tour in search of the ghost of Patrick J Whelan who still walks the grounds and haunts the walls of the hostel. Places to visit for halloween Tower of London

Beheadings, executions, prisoners, and royal intrigue. If it’s a bloody past that makes a scary Hallowe’en haunt, the Tower of London fits the bill. Poet Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded here but nothing sounds worse than Sir Everard Digby who was hung, drawn, and quartered. Ew, that is one terrible way to go!

Made famous by Alexander Dumas in the Count of Monte Cristo, when you visit Chateau d’If, you will be treated to showings of the Count of Monte Cristo. From September to Halloween, Haunted Happenings runs recounting the events with theatre and tours.

If the thought of close spaces gives you a fright, consider the Cuchi Tunnels in Vietnam it gave me a fright as we crawled through the original caves to the point where I started panicking. Worth reading this article. It really educative. I never knew Dracula’s castle was real with the story behind. All thanks to you guys for sharing this information .

I completely agree with New Orleans! There are some really fun ghost tours you can organize here as well.

Wow thanks for sharing with us ….such a wonderful Places thanks Onceagain………..

Transylvania is definitely a great place to horror around halloween, but in my opinion the Brad castle is a touristic trap …. there are much better places in Transylvania, away from commerce and merchandise.

Thanks for sharing a great post!

I like your Halloween history.

From this list i prefer Transylvania because when i think of Halloween first thing that comes to my mind is Dracula so visiting Dracula’s castle will be a best option and this is one of the places in my wish list.

Really a great list. I would like to visit Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls and to experience the nightmares. Thanks for sharing.

Love the list, and great idea! I love Nightmares Fear Factory–so scary ?

Hey, I love the list of haunted places, i would like to visit Hostel of Ottawa with my friends, if anyone visit please share their experience. Thank you

Great list! I’m sharing on my Facebook page and I pinned on Pinterest!

Great list! I love visiting spooky places. Now I’ve got some more inspiration 🙂

G’s been dying to go to Fright Night at the Winchester Mystery House (since we’re from San Jose, CA) but I chickened out. Creepy and scary is not really my thing. I’d rather stay home and watch Hocus Focus.. that’s about as Halloweeny as it get’s for me. Lol. Although I will say I’d love to visit all of the above during the day time and preferably not on all hallows eve. =)

Loved the Catacombs, but they were definitely a bit spooky. Was waiting for someone to jump out at us the whole time.

Hung, Drawn and Quartered … not the nicest way to go!

It basically involved being stretched by a rope that was tied to a horse, then hung until almost to the point of death, quartered which involved castration, disembowelment, beheaded and then cut into 4 pieces to be spread around the country for everyone to see. Hopefully by this time you would be dead 🙂

They image of the castle in Romania gives me the goosebumps! I have such a low tolerance for spooky stuff that all of this stuff sounds scary to me!

I take it Halloween isn’t your favourite holiday then eh? I love a good scare but horror movies don’t do it for me. Well, I should say, the killing and gruesome movies like Saw and Hostel don’t do it for me. But I do love a good ghost story.

Love the list, and great idea! I love Nightmares Fear Factory–so scary 😀

Thanks, have you been to Nightmares? We’ve made it through without chickening out luckily!

Nice touch and perfect timing of an article:) That one in Ottawa looks the creepiest, in my opinion!! Enjoy Halloween, I know it’s celebrated more over there than it is over here. Shame – I LOVE fancy dress!!

Thanks Anthony. Yes, the Ottawa hostel is creepy especially when you think of all the suffering souls that died there.

55 things to do this Halloween that are wicked good

Costumes and trick-or-treating might be the stars of Halloween, but they're really just the tip of the witch's hat when it comes to all the fun things you can do in honor of the big day.

Along with all the traditional activities like carving jack-o'-lanterns and watching scary movies , there's also hosting a Halloween party, attending a pet Halloween parade and oh-so-much more to do to celebrate the season's most spooktacular event.

To help you make the most of it, we've gathered a list of things to do on Halloween that's so good, it's positively wicked .

With the clocking ticking down to October 31 , there's no time to waste. Start checking off these inspired ideas and happenings immediately, because before you know it, it'll be time to turn the page on the calendar and move on to holiday shopping .

In the meantime, from cute crafts to making a Halloween playlis t, we've got a little something for just about everyone in the family, as well as activities for friends, couples and kids.

Ever thought of decorating a Halloween tree ? How about hosting a Halloween trivia night? Or, if you're thinking of something a bit more on the supernatural side, consider booking a local ghost tour , which, if nothing more, is sure to send at least a few chills down your spine.

Whichever you choose, with so many frighteningly good ideas to choose from, this year Halloween is bound to be nothing short of fang-tabulous.

Attend a Halloween parade

While New York City is home to one of the biggest Halloween parades in the world, plenty of other cities and towns also get into the spirit of the season by hosting a parade. Do a bit of homework or Google search to discover "Halloween activities near me" and you're sure to find local happenings and events commemorating the holiday.

Go to a haunted amusement park

Things to Do on Halloween

Many amusement parks get a haunted makeover each year for Halloween. Festive and spooky, plan a trip to one of them this Halloween for a day (or night) of thrilling rides, haunted houses and scary good fun.

Visit a Halloween store

What better way to get into the Halloween spirit than to take a gander at this year's hottest costumes and decorations? Giant spiders? Animatronic skeletons? Barbie getups? You'll find them all at any number of Halloween stores and pop-ups open and waiting for ghouls and guys to come through the door.

Host a Halloween dance party

Why go out when you can stay in and host a Halloween dance party at home? Challenge your friends to come over and do the Monster Mash or try learning the iconic "Thriller" dance. If it's a family night in, put on a cute Kids' Halloween songs playlist and bust a move with the little ones after trick-or-treating or anytime during the season.

Autumn spa day (or night)

Fall is pretty much everyone's favorite time of year. Celebrate the season with a little self-care. Get a autumn-inspired mani-pedi or Halloween nail art to show your spooky spirit. Then pick up a PSL and sip it slowly while watching a romantic movie that evokes all the feel-good things fall has to offer starting with "When Harry Met Sally."

Host a witches tea party

Things to Do on Halloween

Witches are popular year-round, but it's Halloween time when they really come into their own. Plan a delightfully wicked witches' tea party to celebrate all things witchy. Have guests dress up, assume new witch names and serve on-theme cocktails and snacks, then watch "Hocus Pocus" or any of these other classic witch movies .

Host a Halloween trivia night

Do you know what the movie "Halloween" was initially named? Or the most popular Halloween candy? Well, study up and then impress everyone with your smarts. Invite friends and family over for a game night — and trick 'em with with some hard Halloween Qs.

Don't worry, we've got all the questions and answers right here .

Organize a trunk-or-treat

Instead of going door to door, take your Halloween festivities to the parking lot. Hear us out: Trunk-or-treating is just like trick-or-treating, but kids don't have to trek through the neighborhood to get their sugar fix. Find a spot for cars to gather like a school or church parking lot, then ask everyone to fill their trunks with trunks and treats for family-friendly fun.

Dig into a mystery box

Embrace the mystery of the unknown with this sensory game. Ask everyone to stick their hands inside the box to figure out what's inside without looking. Go with items that'll give them the heebie-jeebies upon first touch: cold noodles, sticky jelly, slimy grapes and so on.

Host a cookie swap

Things to Do on Halloween

Don't wait until December! Ask everyone to bake a batch of Halloween cookies , then pick a date to swap 'em. That way, everyone will get to taste all the treats (and steer clear of the treats).

Go on a ghost tour

Get your scary on by signing up for a haunted ghost tour. While the tour is sure to send a shiver down your spine, it's also an excellent way to learn more about the local history of the area.

Jam out to a Halloween playlist

Make a playlist of Halloween tunes to embrace the spirit of the season. Whether it's Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or Bobby Pickett's "Monster Mash," playing the best Halloween songs of all time will help get the party started.

Dine in costume

Think of this as the perfect opportunity to show off your Halloween decorations. Plan an intimate dinner party for friends or family. Then get all dressed up in costumes and serve Halloween fare like witch's brew cocktails and Frankenstein cheesecake .

“Boo” your friends and neighbors

Take trick-or-treating to the next level this Halloween. Leave a bundle of Halloween treats on your neighbors' or friends' doorsteps along with a note that says, "You've been booed!" Recipients must do the same for others.

Decorate your house

Things to Do on Halloween

Chances are, you've already got all your Halloween decorations up —and then some. But if not, what are you waiting for? A little goes a long way, even if it's just some spider-webbing and spooky window decals.

Make devilishly delicious desserts

Who doesn't love dessert? More importantly, who doesn't love Halloween dessert ? Whip up a batch of scary-good treats, everything from Halloween candy brownies to Coconut-Banana Ghost Pops , and serve 'em at your Halloween party (or, ya know, keep them for yourself).

Sip on some cider

Sure, you can drink apple cider all year long, but it just tastes better during the autumn months. Maybe it's the falling leaves or the chill in the air. Whatever the reason, head to a local cidery to sample a flight of hard or regular cider.

Host a Halloween potluck

If hosting an elaborate Halloween dinner party is a stretch this year, host a Halloween potluck instead. Ask everyone to come with a dish or dessert to share. It cut'll the work in half, giving you more time and energy to finish putting up Halloween decorations and making your kid's costumes.

Have a costume contest

Things to Do on Halloween

This one's pretty straightforward. But, seriously, if you've never hosted your own costume party, why not give it a try? Give your guests incentive to go all out by awarding prizes for the best, scariest, punniest and most out-there costumes.

Read scary ghost stories

Shut off all the lights, light some candles and break out the scariest book you can find. Even if you've read the story a million times, you'll still get spooked. Or read one of these very real, very scary ghost stories instead.

Visit a haunted house

There's nothing more thrilling than walking through a haunted house on or around Halloween. They will most certainly scare the daylights out of you, but that's the whole point ... right?

Decorate a Halloween tree

What’s more fun than decorating a tree with little goblins, ghouls and ghosts? Exactly. Dress a fake tree in its Halloween best, then transition it to Christmas with twinkle lights and pretty baubles.

Host or attend a murder mystery party

It seems like practically everyone is having a murder mystery party these days. Like "Clue," but real life: It's a themed event where everyone dresses up and attempts to solve a whodunnit murder mystery.

Get creative with pumpkin carving

Nothing beats the fun that comes along with pumpkin carving. Turn your gourd into something seriously spooky or silly. Want to avoid the gunky mess altogether? Transform your pumpkin with paint and pretty embellishments.

Hold a mummy relay race

Divide your guests into two teams and see how fast the players can turn their teammates into toilet paper mummies. The first team to finish wins!

Go on a Halloween shopping spree

Make a pilgrimage to the Halloween store for new decorations, costumes and party favors. If you're on a budget, hit the local dollar store instead. Most of them have tons of affordable Halloween decorations and accessories to choose from.

Watch a scary movie marathon

Horror movies hit different in October. Show one a day for the entire month of October or watch a few of your favorite scary horror movies on Halloween night. Either way, prepare to be very, very afraid!

Have a backyard movie night

Take the movie outside and project it onto the side of your house, a sheet or projector screen. Invite friends, family and neighbors over for kid-friendly Halloween movie — or if it's an older audience, go with something a little scarier.

Visit a corn maze

Things to Do on Halloween

If you enjoy doing mazes on paper, imagine how much fun it is finding your way out of one plowed into a corn field. Go during the day or scare yourself silly by visiting a haunted corn maze at night.

Make ghoulish Halloween cocktails

Adults agree: Halloween is all about the boo's. So, if you're planning a scary soirée, mix up a batch of themed cocktails like Vampire's Elixir or Witch's Cauldron Punch .

DIY a Halloween costume

Store-bought costumes are great and all, but there are so many homemade costumes that you can easily throw together at a fraction of the cost. If you're up the the task, take the time to DIY a truly memorable costume for yourself, best friend or the entire family.

Get crafty with the kids

Get little hands involved in the Halloween fun. Buy pre-made craft kits or let your kids pick out a frighteningly festive project on their own — monster handprints, black cat cut-outs, you name it. It's a win for parents, too: Display the completed creations every year as part of a new Halloween tradition.

Camp under the stars

A spooky backyard campout is the perfect Halloween activity (if the weather allows, of course). Because there's nothing scarier than sleeping under a full moon after telling ghost stories around the campfire.

Build a haunted graveyard

A haunted graveyard is every trick-or-treater's Halloween dream. To make your own, place a few tombstones (buy or DIY them) throughout your yard, making it look old and neglected. Up the creep factor by incorporating skeleton body parts into the scene and turning on the fog machine.

Plan a Halloween getaway

If your heart bleeds orange and black, then plan a spooky getaway to one of Halloween's most popular destinations like Salem, MA, or Sleepy Hollow, NY. Book a stay at a haunted hotel for the fright of your life.

Make trick-or-treat bags

Trick-or-treaters love your neighbors because they give out full-size candy bars. Beat them at their own game by handing out treat bags stuffed to the brim with treats, toys and trinkets. Pick up candy and other items in bulk, then assemble as many as possible before the big night.

Catch up with Charlie Brown

Things to Do on Halloween

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" has been delighting kids and adults for generations. Invite your friends or family over for a watch party. When it's over, surprise them all with tiny gifts or trinkets from the Great Pumpkin.

Make matching Halloween t-shirts

When done right, matching t-shirts can be worn as a costume. Once you and your squad agree on a design, head to the craft store for t-shirts, iron-ons and other supplies.

Go apple picking

Things to Do on Halloween

While apple picking season typically peaks in September, that doesn't mean you can't still go in October. Once you fill up your basket, figure out what you're going to do with your bounty. Say, warm apple crisp or party-ready candy apples ?

Arrange a Halloween treasure hunt

Getting candy is easy these days — all you need to do is put on a costume, head to the neighbor's house and, voila, there you go! Make it more exciting by hiding treats throughout your house and yard for kids to find.

Visit a pumpkin patch

Things to Do on Halloween

It's super easy to just toss a couple of pumpkins in the cart at the grocery store, but it's way more fun to pick them out at an actual pumpkin patch. Just think about all the pictures you can post on Instagram!

Survey your party guests

Everyone has a favorite Halloween candy. Lean into the holiday's sweetness by doing an informal survey to find out what everyone else in the gang likes, then give their favorite a try. It's a great — OK, sweet —way to break the ice.

Decorate your windows

Give your windows a Halloween makeover with store-bought decals and other decorations, You can even DIY your own bats and other Halloween shapes out of poster board to greet approaching trick-or-treaters as they arrive. Sprinkle in some twinkle lights to make your house really shine.

Trick — and treat — everyone

Pranking has always played a part in the history of Halloween . Plan a fun (but safe and appropriate) Halloween prank to give your friends and family a jump scare. If you're successful, give 'em some candy to thank them for being a good sport.

Give your car a Halloween makeover

You've got your house and yard covered, but don't forget about your car! Show some spirit on the road with fake spider webs, battery-powered lights or other car-safe Halloween decorations.

Attend an autumn festival

If the pumpkin patch just isn't cutting it, level up and find a nearby autumn festival to visit instead. Although festivals vary, most of them include everything you love about the season: pretty pumpkins, warm apple cider and other seasonal eats.

Run a Halloween 5K

Here's one way to get you to run fast! If you're a regular runner, then this is the perfect Halloween activity for you. Even if you aren't, it's a a great way to work up a sweat with other Halloween lovers.

Dress up your pet

You fur baby is part of the family, which means one thing: They also need a Halloween costume. Just make sure that Fido or Fifi is outfitted appropriately for the holiday in a costume that coordinates with everyone else's.

Send out Halloween cards

If you didn't get around to mailing Christmas cards last year, you can make up for it by sending Halloween greetings to the people you love most. And since you're sending cards out now, that means you don't have to do anything come December. Unless you really want to, of course.

Weave a spider web

String fake spider webs everywhere — from bushes, across windows, along your haunted graveyard or just about anywhere else. Throw in a few plastic spiders to make it look like the real thing.

Haunt your family photos

Trick everyone by swapping out your family photos with pictures of scary monsters. Keep the originals nearby, so you can put them back in the picture frames on November 1.

Leave a glowing message

Kids can use glow-in-the-dark sidewalk chalk to draw Halloween scenes or write chilling messages for trick-or-treaters to read as they walk up to your door. A bonus for you: It'll keep them busy, giving you ample time to finish making their costume ... in peace!

Plan a surprise for trick-or-treaters

Things to Do on Halloween

Give trick-or-treaters something to remember when they come to your home. While you can always dress up in a costume, we're all for sitting in a chair and pretending to be a scarecrow. But we'll leave that up to you.

Whip up a fang-tastic dinner

Prepare a delicious Halloween dinner with all kinds of creepy offerings. Start with festive finger foods (like this skull made entirely out of meat and cheese ) before getting to the main course and desserts.

Roast pumpkin seeds

Test your halloween knowledge.

  • Halloween quotes to have them cackling in delight
  • What is the real history of Halloween? Experts explain
  • Are vampires real? Here's what you need to know

Whoa, hold on a second, don't throw away those pumpkin seeds! Be sure to separate them from the guts and rinse them before toasting them in the oven . Keep them plain or season them with spices like rosemary, cinnamon and curry powder.

The Celts believed that on the night of Samhain, which fell on November 1st, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred , and that ghosts and spirits could easily cross over into the world of the living. To ward off these spirits, people would light bonfires and wear masks and costumes to disguise themselves.

California is full of beautiful destinations and fun attractions to experience.

California's attractions are so diverse that travelers of all types will have no problem finding things to thrill them. Beaches , lakes , forests, mountains and deserts all sit side by side within the state's borders. Amid its natural wonders, California is also home to several wine regions, luxury hotels and, of course, star-studded Hollywood. With all this and so much more, it may be challenging to figure out how to fit all the state's most important must-sees in one or more trips.

Let this guide assist you in your California vacation planning, whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro. From the north to the south and everything in between, these are the top things to do in California.

17-Mile Drive

Lone Cypress, a prominent landmark along the 17 Mile Drive, on a foggy day

California's 17-Mile Drive is a spellbinding and awe-inspiring route that weaves along the most scenic stretch of the Monterey Bay coastline. This must-visit road, winding through the exclusive community of Pebble Beach, takes drivers up into the Del Monte Forest, past palatial mansions and down along picture-perfect craggy beaches and bluffs. Take time to stop at the various lookout points marked along the way, including the famous Lone Cypress.

If you're interested in bedding down in Pebble Beach, consider splurging on a room, or at least stopping for a meal, to behold the stunning scenery that surrounds the properties at Pebble Beach Resorts, including The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay . If you are not staying overnight or dining here, expect to pay a vehicle fee to access 17-Mile Drive. Also note that motorcycles are not allowed.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Empty trail by the coastline at Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

This small community in Monterey County is one of the most unique and charming towns in California. Its enchanting coastal location, wooded streets, fairytale-like architecture, and bevy of local shops and restaurants make Carmel-by-the-Sea well worth the detour from the iconic state Route 1. Even if you only have a half-day in Carmel, browse the art galleries, take a walk on the beach and enjoy a meal in one of the quaint restaurants.

Be sure to visit a few of Carmel's beaches, starting with the namesake Carmel Beach, which is located at the end of Ocean Avenue, the town's main drag; pet owners will be pleased to know it's a dog-friendly beach . Carmel River State Beach, which is lesser known and typically not as highly trafficked, connects to the even more secluded Monastery Beach via the Carmel Meadows Trail. As for where to stay, consider treating yourself to one of the town's luxurious accommodations, including traveler-approved L'Auberge Carmel or La Playa Carmel .

You are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to theme parks in California. The impressive amount of options will please every type of traveler. Kids will naturally be dazzled by Anaheim's world-famous Disneyland Resort . However, if you're not up for paying Disneyland's notoriously high ticket fees, consider exciting alternatives such as Legoland California . There are Six Flags amusement and water parks near both Los Angeles and San Francisco – perfect for thrill-seekers – and Universal Studios Hollywood is home to the popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the new Super Nintendo World.

Due to the popularity of these parks, you'll have no problem finding nearby accommodations. Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a top choice among travelers, as is The Garland for those visiting Universal Studios Hollywood. Legoland has two kid-friendly hotels to choose from, though travelers can also opt for a stay at the well-received Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort and Spa , which is located right on the beach and only a short drive to Legoland.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite Valley National Park with a huge waterfall

If you only have time to visit one outdoor destination during your California trip, make it Yosemite . With the national park welcoming more than 3 million visitors per year, Yosemite Valley has been known to stir awe for centuries with its grand granite peaks, magnificent waterfalls and lush evergreen landscapes. There is so much to do in this nearly 750,000-acre park that you'll need several days to take it all in. If you're unsure where to start at this California bucket list destination, know that Glacier Point, Half Dome, Tunnel View and the Mist Trail are considered iconic, can't-miss Yosemite attractions , according to recent travelers.

There are three hotels within Yosemite, including the luxury Ahwahnee hotel. You'll also find cabins, canvas-sided tents, campgrounds and RV campsites spread around the park, as well as several dining options. Be warned that the park does get very crowded during the summer months, so visiting in the offseason is a great idea – especially with Yosemite's picturesque snow-capped peaks. Check for road closures during winter months; tire chains may be required.

Explore the desert

Springtime flowers in desert in California

To properly appreciate California's diverse geological landscape, you'll need to venture beyond the coast and explore the desert. Luckily, two magnificent desert landscapes can be found less than three hours from Los Angeles and San Diego. Joshua Tree National Park , located about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, is an approximately 800,000-acre oasis dotted with the unique Joshua tree, which can only be found in the American Southwest. Meanwhile, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, located about 85 miles northeast of San Diego, is California's largest state park and features striking scenery ranging from slot canyons to palm oases.

Both of these parks offer memorable hiking trails and camping options. You'll want to plan a multiday trip to explore either of these vast parks. Traveler favorites in Joshua Tree include the 3-mile out-and-back Ryan Mountain trail and the 1.7-mile Skull Rock loop trail. In Anza-Borrego, visitors enjoyed the 2.6-mile out-and-back Pictograph Trail and the more moderate 2.3-mile Slot loop trail. Due to the desert's extreme summer heat (think: daytime temperatures in the 90s or even 100-plus degrees), it's best to visit during the spring and fall.

Laguna Beach

If you're interested in experiencing small-town Southern California, Laguna Beach is the perfect place to start. Conveniently situated between Los Angeles and San Diego, Laguna Beach is located along the coast just off state Route 1. Laguna Beach's picturesque setting is characterized by pristine oceanfront parks and a collection of beautiful beaches wedged between its coastal bluffs. Be sure to visit unique cove beaches, such as Victoria Beach and Crescent Bay Beach, as well as larger shorelines, including traveler-favorite Crystal Cove State Park, which receives praise for its beautiful setting between Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar.

Laguna Beach is also home to a bevy of luxurious accommodations , including The Ranch at Laguna Beach and the traveler-approved five-star Montage at Laguna Beach . Once an artists' colony, Laguna Beach is known for its summer art festivals and numerous art galleries. There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy too, such as mountain biking, skimboarding and hiking. Parking can be hard to find in the summer months and on holiday weekends, but there is a free open-air trolley service that runs along the area's stretch of coastline.

Waves breaking on El Matador beach in Southern California

Located a little more than 30 miles west of Los Angeles, Malibu is often seen as a coastal refuge for the rich and famous. While that impression is certainly true, Malibu is worth a visit for its superb beaches and the exceptional parks a stone's throw away.

Drive up state Highway 1 and make a pit stop at popular shorelines, including Robert H. Memorial State Beach, Zuma Beach and Point Dume State Beach. Nature lovers should also take time to hike some of the many trails at Point Mugu State Park, Topanga State Park or the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. For hikes with spectacular ocean views, hit up the 3-mile Solstice Canyon Loop trail or the challenging 2.7-mile Mugu Peak loop trail. Check for trail closures before heading out.

Due to Malibu's small size and affluence, you won't find many hotels that offer affordable rates, so you might want to bed down in nearby Los Angeles. If you are intent on staying in Malibu, you'll find comfort and luxury at the Malibu Beach Inn , The Surfrider Malibu and Hotel June Malibu. Stop by Malibu Country Mart for high-end shopping and farm-to-table dining, or check out Trancas Country Market for snacks at Vintage Grocers or lunch at Malibu Brewing Company.

Alcatraz Island in the low sun

Self-guided audio tours are included with your ferry ticket to Alcatraz: Listen to the stories of past inmates as you walk through what was once a maximum-security prison. On the island, you'll also find an exhibition about the 1969 Native American occupation of Alcatraz that took place for 19 months to advocate for Indigenous civil rights.

Alcatraz features amazing views of the San Francisco skyline, historic gardens and a sanctuary for nesting waterbirds. The ferry ride aboard Alcatraz City Cruises takes about 15 minutes. Advance reservations are recommended.

San Diego skyline from the ocean

The state's second-largest city is a great alternative for those who want a big city experience without the intense traffic and smog of neighboring Los Angeles. San Diego is a premier vacation destination thanks to its diverse array of attractions . Here, you have your pick of fantastic beaches , including Pacific Beach and La Jolla Shores.

Death Valley National Park

Sunrise in Ubehebe Crater at Death Valley National Park, California

This national park is one for the books, breaking records as both one of the hottest places on Earth and the driest land in North America. A visit to Death Valley is not easy; the closest major airport sits nearly two hours away in Las Vegas . Should you decide to make the trek, you'll be rewarded with memorable desert landscapes, including walkable sand dunes and Artists Drive, a 9-mile paved road past colorful hills. There's also the Racetrack, which is home to the famous moving rocks. If you'd like to stay within the park, know that there are a variety of campgrounds and lodging options, including The Oasis at Death Valley.

Waterfall along coast in Big Sur, California

This laid-back remote region located along the central coast of California should be on everybody's bucket list. The beauty of Big Sur is so palpable and restorative that it's become a popular spot for a wellness retreat. You can achieve this with a stay at the famous Esalen Institute, a holistic educational and wellness center, or at the luxurious Alila Ventana Big Sur , where you can book spa treatments and wellness activities. Travelers can also practice mindfulness while taking in all of Big Sur's stunning natural sights .

First-time visitors should stop and admire Bixby Bridge, hike along the coast at Andrew Molera State Park and visit McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. You can also check out the inspiring Hawthorne Gallery or browse the Henry Miller Memorial Library before capping off the day by sitting in an Adirondack chair in the river at the Big Sur River Inn or catching a sunset at Pfeiffer Beach, home to the famous Keyhole Arch. Don't miss out on the delectable pastries at Big Sur Bakery. For lunch with a view and artisan souvenirs, Nepenthe is a must.

If Ventana Big Sur is out of your price range for accommodations , consider a stay at the more affordable Glen Oaks Big Sur or the Big Sur Lodge, both of which earn high praise from travelers for their serene woodland settings. Or, pitch a tent at Ventana Campground.

Indulge in wine country

Vineyard in Napa Valley, California

Many are aware of Napa Valley 's reputation as a world-class wine destination , but Napa isn't the state's only wine producing hot spot. Sonoma is considered Napa's more casual sibling, offering more diversity in terms of attractions , including the beaches of Sonoma Coast State Park and the African-style game drives run by Safari West. Travel farther south to experience the Santa Ynez Valley, considered one of the most diverse grape-growers in the country. Meanwhile, Temecula Valley Wine Country, found north of San Diego, has produced hundreds of award-winning wines from its member wineries. With so many wine regions in California, you are likely to be within driving distance of at least one wherever you are in the state.

Behold the giant sequoias and redwoods

Road through Sequoia National Park

Did you know that the Pacific Coast of the U.S. is the only place in the world where giant sequoias and coastal redwoods grow naturally? Visiting these natural wonders is a must-do when in the Golden State. Contrary to popular belief, redwoods and sequoias are not the same tree; they require two separate climates to survive. To see giant sequoias, head into the Sierra Nevada mountain range, such as to Sequoia National Park , where you'll find the world's largest tree measured by volume: General Sherman.

To marvel at giant redwoods, you have your pick of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park or Humboldt Redwoods State Park (don't miss the Shrine Drive Thru Tree). All these parks sit in northwestern California. These parks offer a variety of camping experiences, such as individual campsites, group sites and trail camps for wilderness backpacking and backcountry camping. Tent camping sites and cabins are available.

What's more, there are a bevy of highly rated hotels in the area, including The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe ; The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe; and the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino .

Experience wildflower season

Orange wildflowers across mountain in California

Spring and summer are great times to see an abundance of wildflowers – such as the state flower. Depending on where you go, the California poppy has been known to blanket valleys and hills with its vibrant orange tint. How much of a bloom you see and where varies based on the year's seasonal rainfall. Some of the best places to see wildflowers are in Southern California. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Point Mugu State Park, Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area and Chino Hills State Park are a few of the most popular locations where you can spot pretty flowers.

If your California travels will be concentrated in the north, try North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve or Lake Tahoe, the latter of which is known to feature a spectacular seasonal display of violet and deep blue lupines. Just be sure to respect the landscapes by staying on designated trails, checking to see if dogs are permitted before you bring your furry friend, and visiting only during park hours.

Explore one or more of the national forests

National park in California on a sunny day

Did you know California has the most national forests of any state in the nation? In addition to its famous national parks, California has 18 national forests to its name. If you are vacationing in the southern part of the state, consider a visit to the Cleveland, Angeles, San Bernardino or Los Padres national forests (but check with the U.S. Forest Service before you go to ensure they're not under closure orders caused by fire or storm damage when you visit). These options sit in proximity to vacation hot spots like San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

North of Sacramento, outdoor lovers have their choice of nearly a dozen national forests, including the Mendocino, Six Rivers and Klamath national forests, to name a few. These forest destinations offer beautiful wilderness landscapes, hiking trails and camping options.

Trek along the Lost Coast

The Lost Coast in California on a sunny day

Intrepid travelers looking to experience the untouched landscapes of California should consider a trek along one-of-a-kind Lost Coast. Located less than 40 miles south of Eureka in Northern California, the Lost Coast is an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Unlike Big Sur, which shares similar geography, the Lost Coast is devoid of major roads and can be accessed via a 25-mile-long hiking trail. The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Visitors who make the journey will be treated to peace and quiet, empty beaches and plenty of wildlife, ranging from elk to elephant seals, not to mention striking views of the King Range, a collection of mountains that hug the coastline. Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore from Chimney Rock trail at sunset

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Aerial view of Griffith Observatory and Los Angeles city skyline at sunset in California

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here: The observatory hosts fascinating exhibits and features a top-notch planetarium. Recent travelers cited the breathtaking setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. Use of the public telescopes is also free, but you will have to pay a fee for the planetarium shows.

Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign in the distance on Mount Lee, overlooking the Hollywood district of Los Angeles

The iconic Hollywood Sign is located in Griffith Park on Mount Lee. Visitors can hike to this iconic landmark on a few different routes and get sweeping views of LA, but the sign itself is fenced off and is typically guarded. Many visitors say that seeing the sign up close is a must-do.

The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

Golden light over Indian Wells Golf Resort, a desert golf course in Palm Springs, California, with view of the San Bernardino Mountains

If you're looking for a place to unwind, Palm Springs is hard to beat. The Sonoran Desert provides a beautiful backdrop, warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. In the late fall and early spring, temperatures typically range from the 50s at night to the 80s during the day. If you just want to chill, you can spend the day sipping cocktails poolside or get pampered at a luxurious spa. For travelers seeking an active vacation, other draws to the area include golf, tennis and miles of hiking trails.

A traveler-favorite Palm Springs attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor up 2.5 miles to Mount San Jacinto State Park. When the sun sets, head out to one of the city's hip bars or restaurants for a gourmet meal or craft cocktail, such as Bar Cecil or Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Make it a weekend away with an overnight stay at a Palm Springs hotel like the new wellness-focused Sensei Porcupine Creek or the modern yet rustic Sparrows Lodge .

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Orange Jellyfish in blue tank at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Located on the central California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium draws nearly 2 million visitors per year. This institution houses more than 200 world-class exhibits that highlight the marine habitats of the area, as well as plants and creatures of the deep ocean. Guests can watch sea otters frolicking, witness glowing jellyfish and admire a 28-foot-tall kelp forest.

The aquarium also prides itself on working to protect the Pacific Ocean off California's coast. Its initiatives include reducing plastic pollution in the ocean, promoting sustainable seafood choices and helping rebuild sea otter populations. Past visitors recommend taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium.
