These are all wonderful team building ideas! Recently, my team did a team building exercise in Denver called DayBreakers. It’s an hour of yoga followed by two hours of dancing in a setting similar to a nightclub. Hundreds of people gather and dance their faces off. What a great way to start the morning!

Our office has a hard time being committed to an activity for a long time or over several days, especially outside of the office such as a sports league. However, something within the office that doesn’t take a lot of time, such at the Type Fight game would be great for us!

K1 GoKart racing is a lot of fun for our employees. It lets them get out there and compete with others in the company. It’s fun to see people who are normally reserved in the office show their competitive side during the race.

How fun! I’m really glad I read this today. Our wellness team’s monthly meeting is actually scheduled for this afternoon. I’ve jotted some of these ideas down, and am anxious to see what the team thinks of the suggestions!

We are always looking for ways to think outside of the box-and there are some great and hilarious ideas here. Some could be used with our design dept, or engineers…they aren’t one-size fits all, but that’s the beauty of getting creative. We have worked with our on-site catering dept, and had them make breakfast sandwiches, orange juices, and yogurt parfaits, and we had our Senior Staff deliver them to the entire site of 1,400+ people in carts. The teams LOVED seeing their leaders, and having them in the serving capacity is great as well!

Great ideas! Midday breaks for fun go such a long way. My favorites are the “Get Outside” ideas – even if something as simple as walking to a nearby patio for a drink or snack at the end of the day as a team, the sunshine and movement after a long workday is the best!

I like the board games, Family Feud, and block printing ideas best. We have to remember that not everyone is a social butterfly and ready to jump into a group activity. Some of the best thinkers and workers and producers are introverts, and no company leader should overlook this. By holding team building sessions that first will help the introverts feel comfortable around their team members, the company can gently add more socially-dependent team building activities, helping the introverts to not “dread” those activities.

These are great ideas. We do the buddy system, usually do a sports outing once a year as our summer get out of the office and mingle event, but some of these look like I could incorporate them into our office as well.

My office actually does quite a bit of the activities listed above. One thing I’ve been noodling on is having an office-wide talent show. Sometimes you don’t know if your coworker actually knows how to juggle or not. I think it would open people up for conversations other than the typical TPS report banter.

Careerbuilder paid for the ingredients for lunch but it was prepared and grilled by employees who volunteered—afterwards everyone enjoyed a fun game of kickball. I’m on an Engagement Committee where we try to do things for our employees to make the workplace a great place to be. We work 7 days a week with several shifts with 100 plus employees and cannot leave the premises as often to enjoy the outdoor suggestions. I know this is an older article but I wanted to leave some feedback. Some of these ideas are fantastic and I will use a few so thank you! But to all managers out there, please keep in mind employees who are not able bodied. This list was very much geared towards young, fit employees, but employees with disabilities, injuries, who are pregnant, obese or older may find many of these activities alienating, or even dangerous. Just something to keep in mind.

Love all your suggestions. I do believe it is time we moved on from those traditional team building games that have been used by companies for decades now. In fact, one fun team building activity that I love is escape room games. They not only foster teamwork and communication, they do so in a fun way. It might just reveal some hidden talents and abilities of the team members. It also provides the opportunity to identify emerging leaders and real team players.

What about Secret Santa? We do that often and it really does connect people to get a gift from a random person in the office.

This is a great post, it’s always nice to see examples of how companies can encourage a healthy work/life balance and bring fun into the workplace. The idea for a scavenger hunt was brilliant! My college track team did this during my sophomore year as a team-building exercise, and I remember it being one of the best memories in college athletics. The tasks were incredibly creative and some were downright impossible to pull off, but the team had a blast. It was a great way to introduce our new freshmen to the team and the team definitely grew a lot closer by doing activities like these. Work can be stressful a lot more than it isn’t, and we all become much more productive when the work environment is as relaxed as possible.

Let’s get started planning your custom field trip in three easy steps.

1. Tell us about your group

Fill out the form below to give us a few more details about your group.

2. We’ll send you a custom proposal

We’ll reach back out to you and will build a custom proposal for your group with some options for you to choose from.

3. We’ll sort out all the details

Prior to your program, we will call you to go over all the details including activities, food, meeting spaces and anything else to make sure your program is successful. We will require a signed contract and 50% deposit or payment in full to guarantee your booking.

Our maximum group sizes are ~80 participants per day (ask about a multi-day trip), minimum group size is 10 participants. We can break larger groups into subgroups of 12 participants each (or as close to 12 as possible).

We expect one adult chaperone per subgroup, free of charge. Youth groups are required to have at least two chaperones.

• Wear closed toed shoes
• Dress appropriately for the weather
• We operate rain or shine!

Please plan to arrive at our facility, 30-minutes before your program start time to verify waivers, use restrooms and ensure a smooth check-in process. If you arrive late, it will cut into your program time.

Terrapin Adventures operates rain or shine. In the event lightning,thunder, or extreme winds forces us to choose another date, we will work with your group to find an alternative date within the next 12 months.

Any amount you have paid will be honored during that 12-month window, to find a new, mutually agreeable date with us.

If more than 30 days before event date, you may cancel, at no cost.

If it is less than 30 days before event date, you will be responsible for paying the minimum program cost.

Games and exercises that are no more than one foot off the ground. During these activities, facilitators will make use of various props and the permanent outdoor elements of our course. These activities will use both mental and minor physical challenges, which focus on developing trust, improving communication, and working together as a team. We will debrief each activity in order to reinforce concepts and tie the information learned back to their personal lives.

Base Camp's most popular field trip is our team building program. Students will explore trust, problem-solving, and personal challenge through experiential rock climbing, archery, and small group team building activities with guided reflections.

Our team building sessions encourage personal growth through tailored activities designed for your group's unique dynamics.

School field trip programs are two hours long and are offered Tuesday through Friday in morning and afternoon sessions. You can also choose multiple programs to create a full-day field trip. Times are also flexible to accommodate bus and pick-up schedules.

TimberRidge Adventure Center

TimberRidge Adventure Center (TRAC), offers a wide range of opportunities for families, friends, class field trips, and work groups. The Discovery Center offers free educational field trips that follow curriculum standards for your school. Educational programs provide a variety of hands-on learning experiences and workshops for your class or group, including a butterfly garden, bird feeding garden, and Grow Native demonstrations including prairie wildflowers, wetland, water garden, and manicured upland and lowland forests.

The Kemper Outdoor Education Center staff offers guided interpretive programs for classroom field trips, youth groups, and organizations. In April, May, and September, the X-Stream Green field trip program offers multi-station outdoor education for 1st to 6th-grade classrooms. The interpretive staff conducts programs on Snakes, Bats, Skins and Skulls, Butterflies, Birds and Binoculars, Fishing, Recycling, Nature Hikes, and much more.

Inside the Nature Center, you’ll find rock and fossil exhibits, a natural resource library, and mounted examples of native wildlife. All field trip participants are required to have a release form signed by their parent or guardian prior to the day of the field trip. Snow, Science, and Stewardship: Middle School Field Trips in Olympic National Park

Imagine this: a bunch of middle schoolers armed with snowshoes and hiking boots, braving the elements in the name of science.

That’s exactly what goes down for the seventh and eighth grade students at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles thanks to Olympic National Park’s middle school science program, supported in part by donors to Washington’s National Park Fund.

Young Scientists, Snowflakes, and Serious Fun

The park’s Elwha Science and Snow Science programs aim to immerse students in hands-on experiences that cultivate a deep appreciation for our natural world while fostering essential scientific inquiry skills.

Interns and rangers first visit classrooms, igniting curiosity and excitement among 210 eighth graders. Then, through a 6-hour field trip to the Elwha River, many of these budding scientists get to collect data and conduct their own investigations, all while getting knee-deep in the action of Elwha River restoration.

And the seventh graders aren’t left “out in the cold.”

Despite the historic Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge burning down, the park quickly pivoted, working with teachers to offer more programming in classrooms (instead of in the Day Lodge, as in years past).

Though the park had to downsize the student groups in 2023 to accommodate the new schedule sans Lodge, more than 80 seventh graders were schooled in the art of snowshoeing and winter weather survival before donning their snowshoes and embarking on field trips to Hurricane Ridge to collect snowpack data.

Building Bridges, Cultivating Conservation

Thanks to partnerships with the Port Angeles School District and the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, this program offers more than just a day in the park for local middle schoolers – it’s a bridge to traditional ecological knowledge and a pathway to lifelong learning.

“This project allows us to serve all the middle school students in the Port Angeles School District and builds on a series of experiences that students have throughout their elementary school years,” shares Dean Butterworth, Outreach and Education Specialist at Olympic National Park.

“The hope is that these repeated positive experiences in the park will create lifelong learners and park supporters.”

By nurturing curiosity and instilling a sense of responsibility towards public lands, we empower students to become passionate advocates for the preservation of national parks.

The Role You Play

Donors help make this possible through contributions to Washington’s National Park Fund. These funds provide for seasonal staff to lead field trips to the Elwha River for the 8th grade students as well as the bus transportation needed to host the field trips.

Bring Back In-Person Field Trips. Here’s Why

Just as peak field trip season was set to get underway in the spring of 2020, the pandemic hit. Schools, and the cultural institutions and countless other organizations that normally welcome K-12 students for experiential learning, closed their doors.

“The pandemic was absolutely devastating for field trips. They went off a cliff, even when schools went back to in-person,” said Susie Wilkening, principal of Wilkening Consulting, a Seattle-based audience research firm.

Statistics bear this out. In the spring of 2023, Wilkening Consulting and the American Alliance of Museums conducted a survey of 340 museum directors from around the country on post-pandemic visitation. Forty percent of respondents reported that they continued to experience lower on-site visitation from K-12 teachers and students.

Several factors may be keeping schools from venturing back to in-person field trips. Virtual field trips rose in popularity during the pandemic, allowing students to glimpse educational sites as far-flung as the Egyptian pyramids or the Louvre art museum in Paris from the comfort of their homes or classrooms—and those opportunities still exist.

Logistics and funding may also be preventing schools from returning to on-site field trips. Educational researchers have suggested that some schools prioritize putting resources toward activities that may improve student achievement on standardized tests over experiences like field trips, whose results aren’t as quantifiable. That may especially be the case for schools struggling to help students recover from pandemic-era learning declines.

The argument for doing field trips again

But a growing body of research, advocacy from some district-level officials, and anecdotes from students provide compelling reasons for bringing back in-person field trips.

Lin Tajeken Jeufack, a high school junior at Kenwood High School in Maryland’s Baltimore County schools, vividly recalls how a 6th grade field trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore that offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into husbandry of aquatic animals planted an idea in her head about one day becoming a marine biologist.

Lin described testing the water in the animal tanks, peering under a microscope in an onsite laboratory at the aquarium, and learning about a profession she knew little about. The 16-year-old, who is now enrolled in her school’s International Baccalaureate program, volunteers at a local hospital, and says she’s leaning toward majoring in math in college, though she hasn’t ruled out a career in marine biology. Lin still welcomes the opportunity to attend in-person field trips—like a recent outing to the Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute, an art museum that features a “Giant Heart” exhibit that allows visitors to walk through the organ’s enormous, lifelike chambers.

“I think students feel safer now [post-pandemic],” said Lin. “We have a really tough course load; we’re always working. It’s good for us to get away from school for a little while.”

Field trips are especially beneficial for disadvantaged students

The lasting benefits of field trips don’t necessarily register in students’ consciousness at the moment of the visit. But these experiential outings have been proven to increase student interest in, knowledge about, and motivation to study subject matter to which they’re exposed, according to a sweeping, decade-old report by Ohio University researchers on field trips. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to reap the biggest benefits from these experiences, as they are less likely to have the opportunity to engage in these activities outside of school-sponsored trips.

That’s not lost on Kadee Anstadt, superintendent/CEO of Washington Local Schools in Toledo, Ohio, who’s committed to ensuring that the students in her high-poverty district take field trips routinely.

“We are quite intentional now about the breadth of experiences we are offering our students,” said Anstadt, who recently established what she refers to as “superinten-dates,” in which she personally takes groups of students on field trips they likely wouldn’t otherwise experience.

“As an urban district, our kids sometimes don’t get to see their larger community. We’ve been to the Detroit Auto Show, to hear a Holocaust survivor, experienced the Toledo Opera, and taken the entire junior class to the Henry Ford Museum,” she said.

Some of the field trips students in the Washington Local Schools take are culturally enriching; others, practical. The district has developed a partnership with two local YMCA branches in which every 2nd grader receives eight water safety lessons.

“This ensures our kids know the dangers of a pool, pond, or lake, and also know how to get help if they need it. Some learn to swim during this time. For so many, it’s the first time they’ve ever been in a pool,” said Anstadt.

Since last year, more than 1,000 of the district’s approximately 7,000 students have received the lessons.

Fish hatcheries, hiking, ice fishing, and Native American landmarks

Laurie Barron, superintendent of the Evergreen school district in Montana, shares a philosophy on experiential field trips similar to Anstadt’s—but with vastly different surroundings to explore.

“We are in northwestern Montana bordering Glacier National Park, a recreation mecca,” said Barron, reeling off a number of recreational and cultural resources available within a quick bus trip: fish hatcheries, hiking, ice fishing, skiing, forestry opportunities, and Native American landmarks.

Barron says administrators aim for younger students in the K-8 district to go on between two and four trips per year, a number that increases to six to eight trips by the time students reach 8th grade.

“We love for them to have several off-campus opportunities each year, experiencing the great west Montana outdoors. It’s very relevant and easy to connect that to our curriculum and content,” Barron said. “And students remember a lot more that way than just reading about places in a book.”

This checklist is for all children and young people settings.

Single case of suspected meningitis or septicaemia in a child, young person or staff member

The setting should contact the health protection team with details of the individual. The health protection team will contact microbiology and the medical team to obtain further information. The health protection team will then follow up with the setting to discuss any further action required.

If the diagnosis is likely to be meningococcal disease, the HPT will discuss the:

• composition of a letter of reassurance to parents, guardians or students to raise awareness of signs and symptoms
• rationale for antibiotic prophylaxis for close household contacts and why children and young people setting contacts are unlikely to receive prophylaxis

Take care not to breach the confidentiality of the person and their illness.

Two or more children, young people or staff members with suspected meningitis or septicaemia

Further public health action may be required when 2 or more individuals who are linked at the setting have confirmed or probable meningococcal disease within a short period of time (usually 4 weeks).

The HPT will:

• establish an outbreak team
• discuss the need for antibiotics within the setting and to a defined close contact group within the establishment (for example dormitory contacts, classroom contacts, children or young people who share common social activities and/or close friends)
• discuss the composition of a letter of reassurance to parents, carers or students to raise awareness of signs and symptoms
• lead on any media messages or involvement

In the event of 2 or more cases the HPT will liaise with:

• microbiology
• local Director of Public Health and their team within the local authority
