History Of LGBT Rights In France

The history of LGBT rights in France has been a progressive journey. Although same-sex sexual activity faced capital punishment during the Ancien Régime, the French Revolution in 1791 saw the repeal of all sodomy laws. This marked the beginning of a more progressive stance on LGBT rights in the country.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, significant progress in LGBT rights was achieved with the introduction of the Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS) in 1999. PACS was a form of civil union that offered legal recognition and protection for same-sex couples. Additionally, the age of consent for homosexuals was equalized in 1982, lowered from 21 to 18, providing further civil liberties to the LGBT community.

Although France has come a long way in terms of LGBT rights, it’s important to note that situations can change quickly, and travelers should seek up-to-date advice before visiting. Both local people and tourists should remain vigilant and be aware that bad actors may exist in every country.

To ensure your safety and well-being, familiarize yourself with local LGBT advocacy groups and seek their guidance on current issues and safe spaces. These organizations are valuable resources for navigating the complexities of the local LGBT community and can help you understand the nuances of the laws and the social climate.

Remember to always err on the side of caution and be aware that the situation can change. Stay informed with the latest information, connect with local advocacy groups, and remain vigilant to protect yourself and those around you. As you explore the historical and vibrant LGBT community in France, approach it with enthusiasm and excitement for the progress achieved and the continued fight for equality.

The LGBT Legal Situation In France

LGBT rights in France are among some of the most progressive in the world. Homosexuality is legal, and gay marriage is recognized in the country. Additionally, there is no censorship regarding LGBT content, and changing one’s gender is legal without the requirement of surgery. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal in France, both in employment and housing situations.

Visiting France as an LGBT tourist or local individual comes with important factors to consider. Though legal protections are in place, always remember that situations can change and there might be bad actors in every country. Remain vigilant and stay updated on current information before traveling.

In France, it’s exciting to see the fight for equality continue, and several LGBT advocacy groups actively work to maintain and improve the rights of the community. Recently, France passed a law criminalizing “conversion therapy,” further showcasing the country’s dedication to LGBT rights.

To ensure your safety and the best experience while in France, be aware of local LGBT organizations and resources. These support groups can provide updated information on prevailing situations and potential risks.

Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. Stay informed, seek current advice before traveling, and reach out to local LGBT advocacy groups to help navigate the vibrant, colorful, and exciting landscape of LGBT rights in France.

The LGBT Social Situation In France

In recent years, France has made significant progress in the realm of LGBT rights, and living openly as an LGBT individual is more accepted than in the past. In fact, many French people no longer view homosexuality as a flaw, with a notable decrease from 42% in 1975 to just 8% today. However, it’s important to remember that the situation can change quickly, and it’s crucial to stay informed and vigilant, especially for tourists visiting the country.

While locals may enjoy a more tolerant environment due to ongoing societal changes, tourists should be aware that they may encounter different experiences and attitudes. As a visitor, it’s essential to exercise caution and seek current advice before traveling, as situations can change rapidly, and information can become outdated.

Certain measures can be taken to protect oneself while visiting or living in France. First, be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts; if something doesn’t feel right, move on to a safer area or seek help from local authorities. Additionally, familiarize yourself with local LGBT advocacy groups, like SOS Homophobie and Le Refuge , to stay informed about ongoing changes and developments in French LGBT rights. Connecting with these organizations can help you remain updated on any emergent issues or concerns within the community.

Remember, although there have been considerable advancements in LGBT rights in France, bad actors exist in every country, and it’s essential to remain vigilant. Stay informed, seek current advice before traveling, and take necessary precautions while visiting or living in France to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience as part of the LGBT community.

Trans Rights In France

In France, transgender rights have made significant progress, and there is a continuous effort to ensure that the local population and tourists alike enjoy a safe and inclusive environment. Transgender individuals in France can legally change their gender without undergoing surgery, which is a significant milestone for trans rights.

However, it’s essential to remain vigilant as there are always bad actors in any country. The situation can change fast, and information can become outdated quickly. So, it’s crucial to seek current advice before traveling, especially if you’re part of the LGBT+ community or a trans traveler.

Several LGBT advocacy groups in France are working tirelessly to ensure that the rights of the LGBT community are respected and protected. Some notable organizations include “ Inter-LGBT ,” “ MAG Jeunes LGBT ,” and “Le Refuge.” These groups are committed to providing support and fighting for the rights of LGBT individuals in France.

If you’re a traveler and need any assistance, these organizations can provide valuable support and resources. Additionally, researching various resources, safe places, and liaisons in France can provide more security and comfort for trans individuals.

To protect yourself, it’s crucial to stay informed, know your rights, and identify safe spaces before traveling. Additionally, engaging with local LGBT support and community groups can help you stay updated on the situation and navigate your way safely in France. Remember, situations can change rapidly, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that we’re up-to-date and well-prepared for any potential challenges on our journey. So, stay excited and embrace the beautiful and diverse experiences France has to offer!

The Future For The Queer Community In France

The future of LGBT rights in France is showing promise as the government continues to take steps to address discrimination and support the community. Recently, France has passed a new law criminalizing “conversion therapy,” which attempts to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQ people. Furthermore, the government has unveiled a national plan to combat hatred and discrimination against the LGBTQ community, emphasizing the importance of inclusiveness.

For both local individuals and tourists, it is essential to remain vigilant as situations can change rapidly, and information may become outdated. Before traveling, one should seek the most current advice and remain aware that there are always bad actors in every country.

With the French government’s dedication to combating prejudice and ensuring equality for all, there are reasons to be optimistic about the future. Paris itself is taking the lead by declaring itself an “LGBTQI+ freedom zone”, incorporating concrete measures for the protection and support of LGBTQI+ people, as well as training programs for officers.

Various LGBT advocacy groups are active in France, and they can be a valuable source of information and support. These groups work tirelessly to improve the rights and acceptance of the LGBT community in the country, fostering a more inclusive and open society for all.

Protect Yourself While Travelling In Gay France

LGBT rights in France have come a long way, making it a generally accepting and welcoming country for locals and tourists alike. However, it is always important to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect oneself, as bad actors can be found in any country.

While France has laws in place to protect the LGBT community from discrimination and hate crimes, travelers should keep in mind that the overall atmosphere and level of acceptance can vary by region. Major cities like Paris and Lyon tend to be more open and progressive, while rural areas might be more conservative.

To protect yourself in your daily interactions, make sure you stay informed about the current social climate and be aware of your surroundings. Stay updated on any changes in legislation or local attitudes that might impact your safety by checking in with news sources and connecting with local LGBT advocacy groups.

In case of any unfortunate incidents, reach out to local authorities, as well as LGBTQ+ advocacy groups such as “Le Refuge” and “SOS Homophobie” for support and guidance. These organizations are dedicated to combating homophobia and providing assistance to those in need. Additionally, consider joining online or in-person LGBTQ+ community groups to gain valuable insights from fellow members.

Keep in mind that situations can change rapidly, and information can become outdated. Ensure that you seek up-to-date advice before traveling. Don’t let your guard down, and always be prepared to respond to any unexpected changes in the environment.

Remember, safety comes first when exploring a new country, no matter how exciting and welcoming it might seem. By staying vigilant and informed, you can enjoy a fulfilling and fun experience in France!

The Gay Locals: The Parisian LGBTQ Tourism Company Offering a Different Side of France

  • By Catherine Rickman
  • July 21, 2021

A group of people walking down the street

Bryan Pirolli didn’t have your typical expat story. The Philadelphia native wasn’t a diehard francophile with rosy visions of living in Paris. In fact, when got a job in the French capital in 2008 after studying journalism at NYU, he wasn’t completely sold on the city. He’d started running walking tours to support himself and make connections, but felt that there was something missing amidst all the history. “I didn’t feel like I was a part of it,” he explains. “I am a gay man, and here I am harping on Hitler and Marie Antoinette all the time when there are so many stories of people like me in the past, especially in Paris, that we can tap into.”

After getting his PhD from the Sorbonne, and spending years mulling on Parisian history, in 2015 Bryan decided he wanted to share something a little different with Parisian tourists, and The Gay Locals was born. “We started off kind of offering a little bit of everything… historical tours and orientations for people coming to Paris who wanted that basic experience,” he explains, with “everything through an LGBTQ lens.” The company, which Bryan runs with the help of a Canadian design student named Jonathan, now offers tours of Paris’s gayborhood , the Marais, as well as other areas like Montmartre with their own rich LGBTQ history. All tours are private, set at €150 for singles, or €240 for couples for 2 hours (though you’ll usually get to hang out for a drink at a local gay bar afterwards). They also offer personalized itinerary planning for €45 per day. Once upon a time, they even offered specialized proposal planning.

“We just kind of want to demystify it and make people comfortable with LGBTQ life in Paris, because they’re already so heightened and stressed out about being in Paris,” Bryan explains. He mentions that previous gay tourism companies he’d come across were too “flashy,” and he felt that a local approach would work better. Even though some of the recommendations under their site allude to experiences of a more adult nature , Bryan went to great lengths to assure that their content is SFW, and that their tours are a place where everyone should feel comfortable.

Many of their clients are younger honeymooning couples coming from the U.S., or older folks traveling with friends and relatives, but, as Bryan mentions, “I’ve had everyone from lesbians from South Africa to a gay man from Pakistan.” The singles tours lend themselves well to visitors coming from places where they may not have access to a thriving gay community, whether it be Saudi Arabia or Middle America. “For a lot of people, especially coming from places like Texas or Oklahoma, they’re like, ‘We don’t have gay bars, what do you do when you go to a gay bar?’”

Paris is a city loaded with incredible LGBTQ history, from Rosa Bonheur to the Chevalier d’Éon. But the way Parisians interact with their queer identities is also part of what makes the city such an intriguing destination, especially in a country where people are expected to put their French identity above any other. After rainbow crosswalks were defaced with homophobic graffiti in 2018, Bryan mentions, “It did launch this whole conversation about national identity, and why are we labeling things with rainbow colors, because that’s putting your gay identity before your French identity. I think it’s a very weirdly political conversation that is interesting to have because it elevates the discussion of LGBTQ issues and community in France, in a way that we don’t in London or New York. Even the Pride march is so much more political in Paris… it’s more than just boas and glitter and beer; we’re having real conversations.”

The Marais itself has come to stand in for the community and the threats of dissolution it faces. “France is so centralized in Paris, and so the gay community in France is also very centralized in Paris… You can’t go to Lyon and find rainbow flags.” But where gentrification has a will, it has a way. “The real estate for the gay community in Paris is dwindling,” Bryan explains. “So many of those rainbow flags have gone away and have given themselves over to high-end boutiques… There’s not gonna be a new gayborhood in Paris anytime soon. Once the Marais goes, if it goes, that’s it.”

Could LGBTQ tourism be a solution? Peut-être. At the very least, it couldn’t hurt. Bryan and Jonathan have already seen a renewed interest in tours post-lockdown, and hope to get back soon to the just work of making tourists—no matter who they are, or where they come from—feel like they’re right at home.

France is one of the most visited countries in the world,  consistently topping the UN’s World Tourism Organization annual report on the country that receives the most visitors. It’s no surprise given the many cultural hotspots to visit like Paris, Lyon, Nice, Deauville, the Alpine mountains, ski resorts, beaches, picturesque villages and no fewer than 44 UNESCO World Heritage sites. France also boasts one of the most recognized and popular cuisines with an abundance of highly rated wines and cheeses. French cuisine is so notorious that it was declared a “world intangible heritage” by UNESCO in 2010.

France is considered one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world, consistently coming at the top of LGBTQ+ reports, such as the  Spartacus gay travel index  and the ILGA Rainbow Europe study. Same-sex marriage has been legal in France since 2013 and was one of the first countries to decriminalize homosexuality back in 1791. The French have always maintained a laissez-faire attitude toward sexuality, i.e. not interfering in matters that may seem too personal and respecting the privacy of others. As a LGBTQ+ traveler in France you are unlikely to experience any problems.

Most of the big cities have a LGBTQ+ scene, particularly the Marais district of Paris. There are also numerous LGBTQ+ events happening throughout the year, which you may want to plan your trip around.

Why Visit France & When to Go

France is a foodie paradise, which is reason enough to visit. Alongside this, it has a rich cultural heritage with touristic highlights like the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, skiing in the Alps and the beaches in the south. It also has festivals taking place throughout the year, making it a destination you can visit at any time.

With regards to the climate, France has four clear seasons: winter between December to February, spring in March-May, summer is June to August and fall from September to November. The peak months are July and August when prices are at their highest and attractions are full of people. Therefore, the months around this are the best time to visit to avoid the crowds while still having the best weather. The winter months are ideal for skiing in the Alps.

Interesting Cities to Visit in France

Paris, one of the most visited cities in the world, was nicknamed “The City of Light” because it was the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment in the 1700s. The nickname stuck and has since popularized because every evening, the city’s many famous landmarks and sites are illuminated to full glory. These include the Eiffel Tower, the many boulevards, bridges, the Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe and many more. The Louvre Museum is the world’s largest art museum as well as being a historic monument. Finally, the Marais district is the focal point of  the city’s LGBTQ+ scene  with the landmark  BHV and BHV Homme department store , the many small cafes, LGBTQ+ bars like Duplex, boutique shops and art galleries.

Nice  is located in southern France along the Mediterranean. The historic center of Nice (called Vieux Nice) has narrow cobblestone streets, Baroque churches and lively markets selling ‘Niçois” ingredients like black olives, tomatoes and anchovies.

Nice has a long 7km (4.4 miles) beachfront promenade called Promenade des Anglais, which is a romantic spot for sunset strolls or a morning run.

Nice also has a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, largely based in and around the Vieux Nice with hangouts like Le Glam. There are LGBTQ+ events taking place throughout the year like the Lou Queernaval, which takes place during the city’s large Carnival in February/March. Finally, LGBTQ+ travelers will want to note the gay/nude beaches in and around Nice, like St Laurent d’Eze, Coco Beach and Castel Plage. Nice has been a Silver-level IGLTA Global Partner since 2011.

Lyon is nicknamed the gastronomic capital of France with an abundance of restaurants called bouchons. This is the place to come for culinary French highlights like saucisson de Lyon (sausage), andouillete (sausage of coarsely cut tripe) and coq au vin (chicken casserole cooked in wine).

Lyon is France’s third-largest city (after Paris and Marseille), located right in the heart of the country, on the doorstep to the Alps. The pretty cobblestone Old Town (Vieux Lyon) is not only UNESCO listed, but a delight to explore whatever the weather. Lyon comes alive during the annual four-day Light Festival in early December called the Fête des Lumières.

CARCASSONNE

Carcassonne, located in the south of France, is famous for its UNESCO-listed fortified city, which looks more like something taken from a Medieval fairytale. The walled town of Carcassonne is called the Cité. It includes many narrow winding cobblestone lanes and quaint old houses and has been really well maintained so that every building, street and square looks like it would have in the Middle Ages.

Some of the touristic highlights of Carcassonne include the double-circuited ramparts with 54 towers and the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire which dates back to the 1200s. The city is busy throughout the year, but the best time to visit is on Bastille Day on 14 July for the fireworks.

Bordeaux is renowned for its wine. As such, this is the place to come for some of the best wine tours. The city is also great for exploring, particularly the cobblestone street Rue Saint Catherine, which at 1.2km (.74 miles) is Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping street. There is also an entire museum in Bordeaux dedicated to wine called La Cite du Vin, which includes tasting sessions. Also look out for the Miroir d’Eau, which is the world’s largest reflecting pool, located on the Quay of the Garonne in front of the Place de la Bourse.

Deauville is a seaside resort town on the northwest coast of France. It’s an upscale holiday destination and is well known for its casino, golf, horse races, sailing and film festival. Deauville offers fine-sand beaches with colorful sun umbrellas and its famous Boardwalk "Les Planches," as well as its many turn-of-the-century villas. The town also hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year including the Asian and American Film Festivals, Easter Festival and Musical August, the Books & Music Fair and the Women’s Forum.

Interesting Attractions to Visit in France

Skiing in the french alps.

France’s skiing industry comes alive during the winter months of December, January and February, which see the heaviest snowfall. The small towns and villages around the Alps mountain range become ski resort hotspots, with annual gay ski weeks taking place like the European Gay Ski Week. The villages and small towns of the Alps are also worth visiting for hiking and rock climbing. Foodies will want to factor plenty of fondue and raclette into their skiing adventures.

THE PALACE OF VERSAILLES

The Versailles Palace was the main royal residence from 1689 under Louise XIV until the start of the French Revolution in 1789 under Louise XVI. It was built to show off the glory of the French monarchy with a lavish interior and elegant Baroque facades. Highlights for visitors include the Hall of Mirrors, where courtiers waited for an audience with the king; sunlight enters through the windows and is reflected off the large ornamental mirrors. The Palace is also surrounded with a vast garden, which has decorative pools, perfectly trimmed shrubbery and fountains.

MONT ST-MICHEL

Mont St-Michel is a large castle on a rocky islet located on the coast of Normandy in the northwest. It is one of France’s most striking landmarks. At high tide, Mont-Saint-Michel is an island. At low tide, you can walk across the sand to reach it.

The main tourist attraction here is the Gothic abbey, Abbaye de Saint-Michel. It was founded in 708 by Archbishop Aubert of Avranches after the Archangel Michael appeared to him in a vision. The Gothic spires soar 155 meters (508 feet) above the sea.

MAGICAL PRIDE AT DISNEYLAND PARIS

Disneyland Paris maybe a popular attraction for children and families, but LGBTQ+ Disney-loving travelers will want to check out one of the Magical Pride days that take place here throughout the year. It includes access to selected areas, Meet ‘n’ Greets with Disney characters, a Magical March Diversity Parade, DJs, live music performances and karaoke theatre experiences.

THE BEACHES OF THE FRENCH RIVIERA

The Côte d'Azur or French Riviera boasts France’s best beaches. Its name translates to “Coast of Blue,” a reference to the deep blue color of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Côte d'Azur is located in the southeastern corner of France from Saint-Topez to Menton near the Italian border. During the summer months, the seaside resorts come alive as they pack out with beach lovers looking for their slice of Mediterranean paradise. LGBTQ+ travelers will want to check out the gay and nude beaches here, such as Saint-Laurent-d'Eze Plage and Coco Beach. Nice is considered the port of entry for the Côte d'Azur and has the third largest airport in France.

ROAD TRIP IN THE LOIRE VALLEY

The picturesque Loire Valley in Central France is famous for its wine production, woodlands, river valleys, castles and medieval fortresses built on hilltops and surrounded by ramparts. It stretches from the Muscadet region on the Atlantic coast to the regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé just southeast of the city of Orléans in north central France, making it ideal for a road trip.

The Loire Valley is so pretty that it is nicknamed “the Garden of France” and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Some of the most impressive buildings to look out for in the region include Château de Chambord, Château de Chenonceau and Cheverny.

HIKING IN THE PROVENCE REGION

The Provence region in southeast France has unique landscapes with olive groves, rolling hills and lavender fields, with little villages nestled in the valleys, perched on dramatic rocky outcrops. This makes it an ideal place for hikers, with no fewer than 398 hiking trails.

Some of the popular stopovers include the market town of Aix-en-Provence, Arles for its ancient ruins and traditional festivals, and Avignon, the medieval city of popes. Also look out for beautiful tiny villages like Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Saint-Rémy and Gordes, each with their own quaint ambience.

Experiencing French Food

French cuisine is one of the most popular and highly regarded in the world. So much so that it was UNESCO listed in 2010. Every village and town in France will have several mouthwatering bakeries. Good bread is extremely important to the French, so freshly made baguettes will be present at most meals. A common French breakfast will include croissants, pain au chocolat, jams, honey, butter and baguette.

Each village and town in France also has its own unique cheese, wine and cured meats (charcuterie). Therefore, a meat or cheese platter at a restaurant is a must: it will include regional cheeses as well as slices of cured meats like saucisson (sausages) and jambon (smoked ham).

Most of the popular French dishes in fact originated as “peasant” food, which made use of every single ingredient and minimized waste. For example, ratatouille is a stew of vegetables, which was used as a way to utilize old vegetables. French onion soup is made from caramelized onions and beef stock, served with croutons and melted cheese, which dates back to the Romans when it was regarded as a “poor man’s dish.” Beef bourguignon is another peasant dish, now regarded as haute cuisine. It is a stew made of beef braised in red wine, beef broth and seasoned with garlic, onions, herbs and mushrooms.

Safety Considerations for LGBTQ+ visitors to France

France is often regarded as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world and travelers shouldn’t experience issues. The French have always maintained a laissez-faire attitude towards sexuality, i.e. not interfering in matters that may seem too personal, and respecting the privacy of others.

France was one of the first countries to legalize homosexuality in 1791 and has long had in place proactive anti-discrimination legislation for employment, gender identity and hate speech. Same-sex marriage and adoption laws were passed in 2013.

A word of caution to all travelers is to avoid some of the city suburbs, which can be dangerous. For example, the Saint Denis suburb in north Paris is known for its crime, with high rates of robbery, drug offences and murder. France is also under ongoing threats by Islamic terrorist groups.

Finally, always check local news before going to France. Strikes are common and can take place last minute or are scheduled beforehand. When they happen, they can cause large traffic jams, queues at airports and other nuisances.

LGBTQ+ Travel Tips for France

Paris has the largest LGBTQ+ scene in France, following by Nice and Marseille. Most hotels in France will be LGBTQ+ friendly and won’t mind two men/women sharing a bed. If visiting a guesthouse in a small village, attitudes may be more conservative.

There are a variety of LGBTQ+ events taking place throughout the year across France. The most famous ones to look out for include Paris Pride (Marche des Fiertés LGBT) at the end of June, the Festival des cultures LGBT film festival in Paris in January, Nice’s Lou Queernaval in February, the Salon du livre lesbian book fair in July in Paris, the “Jerk Off” queer artistic festival in September in Le Marais, Paris, and the Existrans March in Paris every October celebrating on trans and intersex people.

Gay dance parties take place each month in most cities. The most famous is the Matinée Paris, also known as SCREAM.

Stefan and Sebastien are a gay couple who met in London in 2009 and have been traveling extensively together in Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe. Stefan is originally Greek Cypriot and Sebastien is from Lyon in France. Together they have also spent a great deal of time visiting Sebastien’s homeland whether on camping trips or extensive road trips. They write about their travels on their  Nomadic Boys gay travel website.

Gay Tours to Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Croatia and the Caribbean in 2024/2025

Ever since 2018, we have been hosting our own gay sailing trip each summer. Our first hosted trip started in Croatia and then the following year we sailed the Greek Islands. Since we first started our own trips in 2018 we have hosted hundreds of guests on some amazing summer adventures.

We've enjoyed getting to know readers of our blog and our social media followers since we all share the same passion. We've had a blast on all these trips and gotten such great feedback from our guests that we've decided to expand our hosted trips in 2024/25.

In 2024 we'll be hosting two gay group cruises on Virgin Voyages cruises! The first porting at Greece, Croatia and Montenegro. The second Spain, France and Italy. As for 2025, we're excited to announce we're embarking on a brand new Virgin Voyages cruise from Miami through the Caribbean. Finally, after the resounding success of last year, we'll be hosting two land tours in Spain, where we'll be exploring Barcelona and Sitges plus Madrid, Toledo and Segovia.

All of our friends and followers are invited to join any (or all!) of these trips!

Want to learn more? Check out the trips below and let us know if you're able to join and travel to these incredible destinations.

Gay Group Tour of Barcelona and Sitges hosted by Two Bad Tourists

Dates: May 9-15, 2024  Destination/Route: Barcelona and Sitges, Spain Trip Type: Gay group trip (10-20 guests) Hosted by: Two Bad Tourists, yep that’s us!

Spain is an amazing destination and it's one of the most progressive places in the world for the LGBTQ+ community. We've partnered with The Queer Travel who helped assemble the itinerary of this gay Spain group tour and will manage the reservations as well as all the on-the-ground logistics. This will be an awesome gay group trip so you can come with a friend, that special someone or even come alone. In fact, many guests on our hosted trips are solo travelers so you won't be alone and you can make new friends while we explore together. Spain is famous around the world for its cultural traditions, great beaches, history and welcoming atmosphere. As the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage back in 2005, it’s no surprise that Spain is welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community. For the 2nd year in a row, we'll be your hosts on this incredible trip to Barcelona and Sitges where you can tickle your imagination with images of flamenco dancers in the night, sounds of wine glasses clashing amongst Spanish banter, infinite tapas landing on your table and the sea breeze lightly brushing your skin as the water crashes onto the coast. The Spaniards live with passion and a thirst for life. Open your heart, mind and drink it in. Let us show you the magic of this amazing destination.

Gay Group Tour of Madrid, Toledo & Segovia hosted by Two Bad Tourists

Dates: September 13-19, 2024 Destination/Route: Madrid, Toledo & Segovia, Spain Trip Type: Gay group trip (10-20 guests) Hosted by: Two Bad Tourists, yep that’s us!

Madrid is perhaps not as well known of a gay destination as its Catalan sister in the northeast, Barcelona. But the truth is that Madrid is a bigger city with more offerings from a nightlife perspective and many LGBT+ oriented events throughout the year. There are very few cities in the world that offer the same kind of welcome to LGBT+ residents and visitors. Madrid is a fantastic destination especially if you enjoy local neighborhoods, art, the gay scene, nightlife and beautiful weather. After exploring the capital city for several days, we'll later head out on day trips to both Toledo and Segovia, which are both just an hour's drive from Madrid. Toledo is a medieval town that was once the capital of Spain before the Royal family moved the capital to Madrid in the 1500's. Segovia is another famous town nearby known for its Roman aqueduct as well as the fairytale-style castle. We'll spend the days exploring these medieval towns through their curving alleyways, cultural museums and historic monuments. We'll be your hosts on this incredible trip to Madrid with day trips to Toledo & Segovia from September 13-19, 2024.

Homophobic attacks in France rose almost 30 percent last year, LGBTQ group says

Last year saw an increase in gay and trans people reporting physical attacks in France, an activist group said on Tuesday, warning that anti-LGBTQ sentiment remains “anchored” in society.

Issued on: 16/05/2023 - 10:05

SOS Homophobie (SOS Homophobia) said in a report that it received just over 1,500 reports of homophobic or other discriminatory behaviour in 2022 via its website and hotline—around the same number as the previous year.

But there was a 28-percent increase in reports of physical attacks, to 184, or roughly one every two days.

“Despite developments in the law and in people’s attitudes, today LGBT people still can’t live freely the way they are,” SOS Homophobie chief Joel Deumier told AFP.

In its report, the group said violent acts against gay and trans people included “ambushes set up using dating apps” and often had “superficial or non-existent motives”.

Among the reports they received were a knife attack on a male couple in the metro, two women finding their car had been repeatedly spat on, a young man battered by five attackers and another told by his neighbour that “your kind doesn’t deserve to live”.

Reports of discrimination included estate agents refusing to sell or rent to LGBTQ couples or families, and public spaces like shops and libraries refusing entry to non-binary or trans individuals.

SOS Homophobie highlighted reports of transphobic incidents, which it said had increased by 26 percent last year, to 227.

Schools especially “often refuse any kind of administrative changes” to pupils’ genders, the association complained.

SOS Homophobie urged the government to launch a “national awareness campaign”, dedicate more resources to investigating homophobic and transphobic crimes, and improve training for police—some of whom still refuse to accept such complaints.
