It's odd how people start hobbies and especially something as peculiar as being a train spotter. I've never really taken that much of an interest in the makes of trains yet I can remember some European train journeys I've had good and bad. This piece by Michael Palin is of that finest British quality of wistful nostalgia - childhood memories of certain trains and the almost sacred pilgrimage to see and to be on those trains again.

It almost brought about reams of memories of my grandad who talked of trains from Greenore to Carlingford and who'd worked on the trains both in Ireland and England. One of the clearest memories of my youth is seeing one of his feet…

Well, well, well... I am honored to be the first to provide a review of this documentary. 

Since my 3 year old son is currently immersed in a significant train phase, I decided to take a break from the endearing amateur model/toy train content on YouTube. Remembering that I had the entire Travels with Palin BBC collection, I wanted something I could enjoy too. 

My boy was enraptured by all the steam train footage and I was comforted by the sweet natured inquisitive spirit of Mr. Palin. It’s incredible to see him really restrain himself from leaning into his comedic nature, especially because he seems so genuinely connected to the lure of the railway. 

Ever since my honeymoon, I’ve a profound love for Scotland by way of Edinburgh, so to see much an abundance of footage from the highlands and beyond was pure joy.

Ex-Python Michael Palin began his new and illustrious career as a global adventurer with this BBC-produced travelogue, journeying across the UK by train, from Derry to Kerry, reminiscing about his childhood hobby of trainspotting.

Michael Palin's first televised travel adventure was screened as part of the BBC series Great Railway Journeys. 'Confessions of a Train Spotter' saw him travel the length of Britain by train. Setting off from Euston he includes diversions to lines beyond the inter-city network; a trip on the Flying Scotsman; visits to York's railway museum and Edindurgh at Festival time. He crosses the breathtaking Forth Railway Bridge, and after travelling over 785 miles reaches the Kyle of Lochalsh.

Palin's second Great Railway Journey takes him from the ancient walled city of Londonderry to the most western tip of Ireland. He travels his 'family line' as he attempts to trace his great grandmother who left Ireland for the USA over 150 years ago. His trip through a still war-torn Northern Ireland takes him on to Belfast before heading south to Dublin, the capital of the Irish Republic, and on to Wexford, Waterford, the little village of Buttevant and finally Kerry's Dingle Bay, the most western point of Ireland.
