10 Best Day Trips from Muscat, Oman: Guided Tours & DIY Adventures

Have limited time in Oman ? You’ll be surprised by just how much of the country you can see on a day trip from Muscat .

Whether it’s hidden mountain villages, cooling off in a wadi or the solitude of the Empty Quarter you seek, this curated list of Muscat day trips and tours has something for every traveller and every budget.

Muscat is one of my favourite places in the Middle East . I could happily spend a week wandering the atmospheric Muttrah Souq, people watching on the corniche and eating kebabs on the beach as the sun melts over the Gulf. But it would be a shame to come all the way to Oman and not sample the country’s magnificent natural landscapes as well.

From sinkholes and wadis to Oman’s ‘Empty Quarter’, the Sharqiya Sands desert, all the way to the rocky peaks and deep canyons of the Hajar mountains and the pristine waters of the Gulf of Oman, this country is endowed with so much natural beauty, it’s almost overwhelming.

Hiring a car and driving around Oman is the ultimate way to experience the country. If you don’t have enough time for an extensive road trip or just just prefer to base yourself in Muscat and return to the capital each evening, this list of day trips and organised tours will help you see the best of the country in a time and cost-effective way.

10 best day trips from Muscat

1. day trip to wadi shab and bimmah sinkhole for scenery & swimming.

  • Distance from Muscat: 150 km (1.5 hours by car one-way)
  • Great for: Scenery, swimming, beaches, picnics

12 of the very best Oman tours (Muscat day tours), including Muscat cruise tours, nature tours, wadi tours and desert tours.

Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole, two of Oman’s most majestic natural wonders, are both located down the coast from Muscat. When combined, they make for a perfect day trip, especially on a warm day.

Bimmah Sinkhole (open daily from 8am) should be your first stop. Arrive early and you might have the deep limestone pool – which legend says was formed by a meteorite – all to yourself. Entry is free.

As you continue down the coast, stop off at Hidden Beach or one of the other secluded strips of sand for a swim. White Sand Beach and Finns Beach are also popular.

After 20 minutes of driving you’ll reach the entry point to Wadi Shab. Leave your car in the marked car park and board a small boat (1 OMR per person) to take you to the mouth of the canyon. From there, it’s a 45-minute uphill hike under the palm trees to reach the first swimming pools .

Swim between boulders and squeeze yourself through narrow openings in the canyon to reach secluded caves and Wadi Shab Waterfall, a cascade inside one of the caves. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy by the wadi before you head back to Muscat.

Guided day trips to Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole

  • Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole transport from Muscat with an audio guide – A great option for independent travellers who just need a transfer.
  • Wadi Shab trekking tour with transfers from Muscat and a guide – Excellent for active travellers who want to spend more time swimming and hiking in the Wadi. A photo stop at Bimmah Sinkhole is included on the way back to Muscat.

2. Day trip to the Sharqiya Sands for dunes & desert oases

  • Distance from Muscat: 200 km (2 hours by car one-way)
  • Great for: Scenery, adventure, culture, swimming

12 of the very best Oman tours (Muscat day tours), including Muscat cruise tours, nature tours, wadi tours and desert tours.

Oman’s Sharqiya Sands (Wahiba Sands) is an endless sea of rippled sand, all rolling red dunes punctuated with the occasional palm-fringed oases. A trip to the edge of the Empty Quarter to experience one of the Middle East’s most incredible landscapes and learn about Bedouin culture is an absolute must when travelling in Oman.

The desert is vast with many access points. From Muscat, one of the most convenient is just after the town of Bidiyah , the same place where guests are picked up for the Desert Nights Camp . (If you have time, a night in the desert at a Bedouin-style luxury camp is a wonderful experience and so much more rewarding than a day trip!)

As well as exploring the dunes on foot and by car, you can visit old merchant villages and traditional markets in this area.

An hour east of Bidiyah towards the coast, Wadi Bani Khalid is a classic desert oasis with emerald pools and swaying palms. It’s much easier to get to compared with Wadi Shab – you can park your car right at the entrance and walk only 5-10 minutes to reach the pools, which makes it a better choice for families with young children or anyone with accessibility needs. No 4WD is required for the wadi.

Remember that ‘dune bashing’ can be harmful to the environment, so do your research before you set off (and make sure you have the right kind of vehicle and enough experience under your belt to tackle the conditions). If you plan to join a tour, be sure to choose an ethical company that is wary of environmental issues and doesn’t commercialise Bedouin culture.

Guided day trips to the Sharqiya Sands & Wadi Bani Khalid

  • Private desert safari day trip with lunch – Experience the best of Wahiba Sands and Wadi Bani Khalid in the comfort of your own 4WD.
  • Wahiba Sands private tour – This off-road itinerary includes plenty of time in the desert to learn about Bedouin culture.

3. Day trip to the Daymaniyat Islands for snorkelling & dolphin watching

  • Distance from Muscat: 15 km to the Al Mouj Marina (15 minutes by car) + 35+ minutes by boat to the islands
  • Great for: Wildlife, nature, beaches, swimming

Blue skies over Oman's Al Daymaniyat islands, a pristine nature reserve near Muscat.

The Al Daymaniyat Islands (AKA Ad Dimaniyat Islands) are an archipelago of nine pristine islands just off the coast north of Muscat. A protected nature reserve, the area is known for its vibrant marine life (including leopard sharks and sea turtles), corals and pods of dolphins.

There are at least 12 designated sites in the islands for snorkelling and scuba diving, while an endless number of white sand beaches are perfect for swimming.

This is one place in Oman where I recommend going with a guide. Day trip organisers will take care of your permits to enter the island and provide snorkel/diving gear if you need it.

If you’re not so keen on swimming, there are itineraries available that focus on dolphin-spotting from the boat. Some tours include transfers from Muscat while others meet at the Al Mouj Marina , a 15-minute drive from downtown.

Be aware that during Summer (May to September) only snorkelling is allowed and you won’t be able to access the beaches.

Guided day trips to the Al Daymaniyat Islands

  • Half-day dolphin watching and snorkelling tour – Great for those with limited time. The meeting place is Al Seeb jetty.
  • Full-day snorkelling tour – Enjoy the magic of this underwater ecosystem without having to rush back to the boat. Snorkelling gear included.
  • Scuba diving tour – Includes two dives sites, an experienced instructor and all your scuba hire gear.

4. Day trip to Nizwa for culture & history

  • Distance from Muscat: 150 km (1.75 hours by car one-way)
  • Great for: History, culture, shopping, mountain scenery

View of Niza mosque and town from the top of the fort. Photo credit: Emily Lush.

Oman’s second-largest city and former capital, Nizwa, is more than worthy of a few days on your itinerary. But if you’re in a rush, a day trip to Nizwa will suffice. It’s an easy drive from Muscat via the highway, taking around 1.5-2 hours by car.

Nestled beneath the mountains in the interior of the country, Nizwa has a totally different feel to coastal Muscat. Must-visits include the 17th century Nizwa Fort and the adjoining souq , my favourite market in Oman. It’s the perfect place to buy clay pottery (a local specialty), woven carpets and other souvenirs. Visit on a Friday morning to see the weekly Goat Market.

The museum inside the fort is terrific as well, so don’t miss it. If you have more time, there are dozens of mesmerising castles in this area, including the UNESCO-listed Bahla Fort, Jabrin Fort and Samail Fort. Alternatively, you can combine a visit to Nizwa with a drive or walk through the nearby Hajar mountains.

Guided day trips to Nizwa

  • Full-day Nizwa tour with photo stops and an audio narration – This itinerary includes transport from Muscat and is a good option for those who prefer to travel without a guide.

5. Day trip to Jebel Shams & Wadi Guhl for canyon hiking

  • Distance from Muscat: 200 km (2.5 hours by car one-way)
  • Great for: Hiking, scenery, adventure

Village between the mountains.

Active travellers shouldn’t miss an opportunity to travel deeper into Oman’s Hajar mountains. Along with the country’s highest peak, Jebel Shams, this part of the country is known for its deep ravines, wadis, and traditional mud villages.

For any serious hiking, it’s recommended to stay the night nearby in order to make an early start. Coming from Muscat, you can do one of the shorter treks in the area, the most popular being the W6 Balcony Walk (approximately 8 km return) along the edge of Wadi Guhl, Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon’.

Various marked viewpoints dot the scenic road that leads to the trailhead. Take one of the lesser-known trails in the area to discover abandoned villages with old grain stones and hidden lakes.

Guided day trips to Jebel Shams

  • Full-day tour to Oman’s Grand Canyon – Includes off-road transport into Wadi Ghul (where you can explore on foot or mountain bike) plus a stop in a traditional mud village.

6. Day trips From Muscat to Jebel Akhdar for nature & fresh air

  • Distance from Muscat: 150 km (2.5 hours by car one-way)
  • Great for: Nature, scenery, hiking, traditional markets

A small village in Oman's Jebel Akhar mountains.

Jebel Akhdar (the ‘Green Mountain’) is also located in the Hajar range. What makes this area special is that unlike Jebel Shams, it has a different look and feel thanks to the moisture in the air. The mountain and especially the Saiq Plateau is verdant with forests and fruit orchards.

A highlight of Jebel Akhdar is driving through the Sumail Gap, a rocky pass that divides the Eastern and Western parts of the Hajars. Visit small villages with bright produce markets and follow marked trails through the mountains for spectacular views of the fertile valleys.

Guided day trips to Jebel Akhdar

  • Full-day Hajar mountains & Jebel Akhdar tour – A well-paced and comprehensive mountain tour featuring local markets, the Sumail Gap, Izki village, the green Saiq Plateau, and Wadi Bani Habib.

7. Day trip to Bald Sayt, Oman’s most beautiful village

  • Distance from Muscat: 150 km (2.5+ hours by car one-way)
  • Great for: Hiking, adventure, scenery

Bald Sayt, a beautiful secluded village surrounded by terraces and palm trees in Oman's mountains.

Secluded in the foothills near Jebel Akhdar, Bald Sayt is Oman’s most picturesque village. You’ll need a 4WD (and some serious driving skills) to access the area independently – or else you can join a day tour from Muscat, which is a much easier way to go.

Admire the stone and mud buildings and explore the labyrinth of narrow alleyways before circling the village on the marked path to see the terraced fields and date palm groves. It’s a great opportunity to take photos and witness local life in Oman, as farmers and villagers go about their daily life.

There are no guesthouses or restaurants in town so if you’re visiting independently, make sure you come prepared with enough water and supplies. Familiarise yourself with the walking route before you set off to avoid getting lost in the canyon.

8. Day trip to Misfat mud village and the Al Hajar mountains for hiking & scenery

  • Great for: Culture, nature, walking

Traditional mud brick architecture in Misfat Al Abriyeen.

Misfat al Abryeen (Misfah al Abriyyin) is a more-accessible alternative to Bald Sayt. This ancient mud village is less secluded (and more commercialised as a result), but it’s still very charming. The streets are far too narrow for cars, meaning you have no choice but to explore by foot. The village is compact and there are several marked walking paths you can follow.

The thing that makes Misfat so special is its vernacular architecture: Mud houses are built atop towering boulders, giving the impression that the village blends seamlessly into the mountain landscape. Follow the man-made water channels to their source and get lost in overgrown palm groves before taking a break for lunch at one of the cute guesthouses or restaurants in the village.

Misfat is a long drive from Muscat but the scenery makes it worth it – especially the final stretch of road from Al Hamra that takes you high into the mountains.

Guided day trips to Misfat

  • Full-day tour of the Hajar region from Muscat – An action-packed itinerary with Nizwa, Wadi Ghul (Oman’s Grand Canyon), Jebel Shams views, and a traditional meal in Misfah.

9. Day trip to Sur for dhow boats & sea turtles

  • Great for: Beaches, scenery history, seafood, wadis & sinkholes

A dhow boat off the coast of Sur, Oman. Photo credit: Emily Lush.

Located just shy of the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, the sweet seaside city of Sur deserves more attention than it gets. One of my favourite places in Oman, it’s an easy drive from Muscat down the coastal highway, passing Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab along the way.

Climb the Al Ayjah Watch Tower for a view of the white-washed houses, then walk the shoreline and visit the open-air workshop where people make wooden dhow boats the traditional way without nails or glue. This being the spiritual home of Sinbad the Sailor, Sur is loaded with history and legend. Discover more secrets at the Bilad Sur Castle, or spend an hour wandering the local neighbourhoods of Makha and Ar Rashah.

There are some great restaurants in Sur to try local seafood and Zanzibari cuisine.

Ras Al Jinz, the famous turtle nesting ground, is a short drive from Sur further down the coast. However, turtle viewings are limited to dawn and dusk, so it’s not really feasible to include this in a day trip itinerary. I suggest staying the night in Sur if you want to see the turtles (a must-do in my opinion).

10. Day trip on the Al Rustaq Loop for castles & markets

  • Distance from Muscat: 300 km loop (4 hours by car return)
  • Great for: History, culture, scenery

Rustaq Fort, a beautiful castle you can visit as a day trip from Muscat, Oman.

The Rustaq Loop is a ready-made day trip from Muscat that takes you to three of Oman’s most important castles: Nakhal, Rustaq and Al Hazm.

Start by driving west to the city of Barka then head inland on the highway, visiting Nakhal first. Dating back to the 9th century, it boasts amazing views from its hilltop perch and features an armoury museum inside.

Rustaq Fort, a further 40-minute drive, is a huge complex of towers and water channels that needs a good hour or more to cover. If you have time, take a dip in the nearby Al Kasfah Hot Spring before continuing to Al Hazm Fort, another sand-coloured monolith with beautiful scalloped walls and carved wooden doors. Take the audio guide for a more enriching experience.

As you drive, follow your nose and take detours to some of the small villages and viewpoints in the area. The loop culminates at Muladdah, then it’s a 60-minute drive back to Muscat.

Things to look out for when planning a guided day trip from Muscat

If you decided to go down the guided tour route, here are some things to keep an eye out for when booking.

  • Religious holidays and festivals. Tour schedules often change if there’s a festival on and during the Holy Month of Ramadam. Keep this in mind when you’re planning your trip.
  • Day of the week. Some markets (for example the goat market in Nizwa) only take place once a week. If you have your heart set on visiting a particular market, make sure you plan your trip accordingly.
  • Does the price of the tour include entrance fees? Most outdoor attractions in Oman are free, but if the tour visits a museum, you should double-check to see whether the cost of your ticket is included.
  • Group size. If it’s not a private tour, is there a cap on group size?
  • Does it come with lunch? If it’s a full-day tour, check to see if lunch is included or if you’ll have to buy your own food. Often on tours you’ll be taken to a particular restaurant. If it’s out of your budget range or it doesn’t cater to your dietary requirements, there’s often not much you can do.
  • Are drinks included? Some of these Oman tours include drinks.
  • Is there hotel pick up, or do we rendezvous at a set location? If pick up and drop off isn’t included, you’ll have to make your own way to the meeting point. Muscat is very spread out, so this will probably mean having to take a taxi or drive your own car.
  • Can I get a refund if I change my mind? Plans change, things come up. I get it. When I was in Muscat, I had to cancel one of my tours at the last minute because I had a migraine (probably from dehydration). I always prefer to book through a third-party agent such as Get Your Guide or Klook instead of going direct to the tour company. Both these sites can offer a full refund provided you give notice.

What to bring on your Oman tour

  • Your swim kit. If you’re going out on the water or your tour involves stopping at a wadi, you should bring your swimming gear and a towel. Note that there are rules in Oman about what kind of swimming costumes women can wear in public. See the next section for more advice.
  • An waterproof dry bag. Essential for keeping your valuables safe when visiting wadis and sinkholes. This one is perfect for water activities and comes in a range of sizes.
  • A scarf for visiting mosques (women). A lightweight cotton scarf is my number one travel item. In Oman, it will come in extra handy for covering your hair when entering a mosque or for draping over your shoulders when visiting a market or a rural area. This neutral travel scarf goes with anything, and it even has a hidden pocket.
  • Good walking shoes. Comfy walking shoes are absolutely essential for Oman. I love these ones , while my partner lives in these waterproof shoes .
  • A reusable water bottle. Absolutely essential in Oman for staying hydrated. I love my S’Well water bottle – it’s vacuum insulated to keep water icy cold for the whole day, and it doesn’t sweat.
  • Rehydration tablets or sachets. If you’re out on the water, dune bashing or hiking, your body will be crying out for electrolytes by the end of your tour (believe me!). I prefer Hydralyte tablets because they come in a handy tube.
  • A sturdy day pack. Pop it all in a day pack and you’re ready for your Oman tour! I always go for a minimalist backpack when I’m travelling.

Dress code in Oman

If you’re travelling outside the city to rural villages and markets – or even if you’re staying in Muscat and visiting the mosque – you should dress conservatively. Women are not required to cover their hair in Oman. But it is advisable to wear long, loose-fitted clothing that covers your shoulders and knees at a minimum. Avoid tops with low necklines and fitted pants.

Women aren’t allowed to wear bathing suits or bikinis at some swimming areas in Oman. I usually wore bike shorts and a long-sleeved shirt in the water. Rules vary from place to place; if in doubt, contact your tour guide ahead of time to double check.

Should you tip your tour guide?

Tipping is not mandatory in Oman, but it is appreciated. If you’re happy with the service your tour guided provides, 5-10 Omani Rial (about 13-25 USD) would be considered a generous tip. It also depends on your group size. I would tip more for a private guide and maybe a little less if it’s a large group.

If you have a driver or a boat skipper, it’s a nice gesture to also offer them a small tip.

Where to stay in Muscat

When we visited Muscat, we stayed at Mutrah Hotel , which we chose because of its proximity to the city’s biggest marketplace, Muttrah Souk. It’s basic but comfortable, with free parking on-site. Best of all, it’s walking distance to the market and corniche.

If you’re going to Oman to celebrate a special occasion or you just prefer a more luxurious kind of travel, Muscat has some amazing beach side resorts. Located right on the Gulf coast, The Chedi Muscat is a cut above the rest. W Muscat is slightly more economical but no less opulent.

If mid-range is more your style, try Levatio Hotel . And if you’re visiting Oman for a limited amount of time on a layover, I highly recommend Sundus Rotana near the airport.

Could you please advise whether these are offered in the August to September period?

Many of them are. When you click on the link, it opens Getyourguide and Viator. In the confirm availability box you can pick a date. On Getyourguide if it is green it means the tour is available. But the weather will seriously limit you walking. It get really hot. I recommend either going in the mountains or visiting fort. Happy travels!

Hi Lorena I want to clarify that those are not my tours, I am neither tour guide nor a travel agency. I just list the destinations I like best. For a first time, depending on your fitness level and you previous travel experiences, I would do either Wadi Shab or Wahiba Sands. But if your family loves history, I would pick one of the forts. I wish you wonderful travels! Claire

Day Trips from Muscat: Top 9 Muscat Day Tours in Oman

The capital city of Oman, Muscat, is a hidden gem nestled between the Arabian Sea and the rugged Hajar Mountains. It may not be as popular as other capital cities in the Middle East , but it's definitely a place worth visiting if you're looking for an authentic experience of Arab culture.

While the city of Muscat itself offers a rich cultural experience with its stunning architecture and bustling souqs, some of the best places to visit in Oman are located further away from the capital city – making them perfect spots for day trips from Muscat if you want to enjoy the natural beauty and history of Oman.

In this post, I'm going to share some of the most popular day tours in Oman that you can book easily from Muscat.

These tours are especially suitable if you're an Oman Air passenger and have some time to explore more of the country during your transit in Muscat , especially if you have 2-3 days to spare during your stopover!

So, what are the best places to visit for Muscat day trips? Let's dive in!

Table of Content

9 Best Day Trips From Muscat, Oman

1. discover the wonders of wadi shab.

Wadi Shab in Oman.

If you're looking for one of the most underrated natural wonders in the Middle East, head over to Wadi Shab .

Situated around 2 hours from Muscat city center , this stunning canyon offers unique experience for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The best way to get there is by joining a group tour on full-day Muscat tours to Wadi Shab . Alternatively, I'd also recommend renting a car in Muscat so you can make the most of your trip between the city and Wadi Shab.

Hike through the canyon, and you will be greeted by crystal-clear pools of water that are perfect for a refreshing swim.

If you're interested in a more adventurous way to explore Wadi Shab, there are hidden caves there to be explored – as well as the waterfall that cascades down into a pool, creating a picturesque setting that is perfect for a dip or photographs!

2. Take a Trip to the Historic City of Nizwa

Nizwa Fort in Nizwa, Oman.

Another option for a day trip from Muscat is the historic city of Nizwa. The city once served as the capital city of the Imamate of Oman until the end of the Jebel Akhdar War in 1959.

The centerpiece of Nizwa is its imposing fort, which dates back to the 17th century, but there are so many things to do in Nizwa that make it one of the must-visit destinations from Muscat.

It's one of the most popular landmarks in Oman and the most visited by tourists—it only comes second to other national monuments situated in the capital city of Muscat, like the Royal Opera House of Muscat or Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.

Another must-visit attraction in Nizwa is its traditional souq, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and shop for traditional handicrafts, spices, and dates.

Don't forget to visit the nearby date plantations, where you can learn about the importance of dates in Omani culture since it was under the Imamate government.

Nizwa is only 1.5 hours from Muscat, and you can easily book day trips to Nizwa to learn more about its rich history and traditional charms.

For a more affordable option, you can also arrange a DIY trip by taking a Mwasalat bus from Muscat.

As one of the most popular day trip destinations from Muscat, the public bus to Nizwa departs twice daily – make sure to  check the bus schedule on the Mwasalat website to ensure ticket availability.

3. Explore the Majestic Rustaq Fort

Rustaq Fort in Oman.

Just an hour west of Muscat, you can visit Rustaq – a small town that's home to some of Oman's most impressive forts: Rustaq, Al Hazm, and Nakhal Forts.

The most notable of these is Rustaq Fort, which dates back to the 13th century. This massive fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and is a testament to Oman's rich history.

Visitors can explore the fort's intricate architecture and learn about its strategic importance in the region. Rustaq is also known for its hot springs, where you can relax and rejuvenate after a day of exploring.

If you have more time to spend in Oman, I recommend staying for a night or two and booking accommodations there so you can explore the town to the fullest. Season Inn Hotel Bald Sayt is one of the most popular hotels near Rustaq that you can consider staying during your Oman trip.

Alternatively, you can also book a day trip excursion from Muscat to Rustaq , which includes some of the most popular attractions in town – including Nakhal Fort and Al Thowarah Hot Springs.

4. Witness the Beauty of Bimmah Sinkhole

Bimmah Sinkhole in Oman.

About an hour from Muscat, you will also find the stunning Bimmah Sinkhole. It's one of the best destinations for road trip to Oman , and for good reasons!

Most day tours from Muscat to Bimmah Sinkhole usually include Wadi Shab, so if you're interested in immersing yourself fully in Oman's beautiful nature, it's worth booking this Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole tour from Muscat .

oman day tours from muscat

Just like Wadi Shab, Bimmah Sinkhole is a great place to visit from Muscat if you enjoy outdoor activities. The sinkhole is an outcome that results from the collapse of an underground limestone cave, creating a beautiful turquoise pool surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.

You can swim in the clear waters, relax on the sandy beach, or simply admire the beauty of this unique geological formation.

While it's not forbidden to wear a swimsuit if you plan to swim in either Wadi Shab or Bimmah Sinkhole, keep in mind that Oman is a conservative Muslim family that will appreciate modesty from tourists traveling to their country.

5. Visit the Picturesque Village of Misfat Al Abriyeen

Misfat Al Abriyeen in Oman

For a taste of traditional Omani village life, head to Misfat Al Abriyeen. This charming village is located about 2 hours from Muscat.

Known for its traditional mud-brick houses, terraced gardens, and date plantations, you can marvel at the ancient irrigation system known as  falaj  for the locals while wandering through the narrow alleyways around Misfat Al Abriyeen village.

You can also enjoy panoramic views of the highest peak of the Arabian Peninsula in Jebel Shams. If you join an excursion to Misfat Al Abriyeen , you can also book one that includes the Jebel Shams summit to make the most of your day trip from Muscat.

6. Experience the Serenity of Jebel Akhdar

Jebel Akhdar in Oman.

One of the most popular destinations for a day tour from Muscat is Jebel Akhdar, one of the Hajar mountains near Jebel Shams that's also popular as a prominent historical site for Omani people.

Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar were the spots where the infamous Jebel Akhdar War took place in 1959, and you can find a lot of tour packages that include both Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar from Muscat .

Apart from the historic tour, you can also enjoy the mountain range's stunning landscapes and terraced farms. Compared to the dry weather in Muscat, it's also a great escape for some cool mountain air in Oman.

If you're looking for some outdoor activities near Muscat, you can hike through the rugged terrain of Jebel Akhdar while immersing yourself in the mountainous landscapes.

You can also explore the traditional villages in the surroundings, where you can occasionally find rose gardens.

The best time to visit Jebel Akhdar is during springtime in April or May, as it's the blooming season when you can witness the annual rose harvest in Oman. During the excursion, you may learn about the rosewater production in Jebel Akhdar – which is a key ingredient in various Omani cuisines and perfumes!

7. Take a Dip in the Turquoise Waters of Fins Beach

Fins Beach in Oman

For those seeking a beach escape, Fins Beach is the perfect destination. Just 45 minutes from Muscat, this beautiful beach offers clear turquoise waters, soft sandy beaches, and stunning views of the Arabian Sea.

Visitors can swim in the calm waters, relax on the beach, or enjoy water sports such as snorkeling and kayaking.

Fins Beach is also a popular spot for camping, allowing visitors to spend a night under the stars and wake up to the sound of crashing waves.

8. Discover the Rich Marine Life of the Daymaniyat Islands

Snorkeling with turtles.

Located about 1.5 hours from Muscat, the Daymaniyat Islands are a group of uninhabited islands that are home to a diverse range of marine life.

The islands are a protected nature reserve and offer some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities in Oman.

In addition to watersports, you can also explore the colorful coral reefs, or even spot dolphins and turtles if you're lucky.

The crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life make the Daymaniyat Islands a paradise for underwater enthusiasts, and you can easily book a day trip to Daymaniyat Island nature reserve from Muscat , which includes dolphin watching excursion!

9. Enjoy a Desert Safari in Wahiba Sands

Wahiba Sands in Oman.

No trip to Oman would be complete without experiencing the beauty of its vast deserts.

Wahiba Sands , located about 2 hours from Muscat, offers a unique desert experience that is sure to leave you in awe. You can book a hot air balloon experience in Wahiba Sands to enjoy the bird's eye view of the Omani desert.

For a budget-friendly excursion, you can still enjoy a thrilling desert safari or riding camels across the golden dunes. For the best experience, book a night or two to stay in a traditional Bedouin camp where you can sleep under the stars in the desert.

The vast desert of Wahiba Sands not only provides a stark contrast to the bustling city life of Muscat, but you can also easily extend your trip to go on a beach getaway to the Indian Ocean from Wahiba Sands.

In this Wahiba Sands and Indian Ocean tour package , you'll get a complete experience of camping in both Bedouin camp and by the Indian Ocean – which is perfect if you're looking to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in Oman's beautiful nature has to offer!

Muscat's surroundings offer a wide range of natural landscapes and historic sites waiting to be explored. From stunning canyons and beaches to ancient forts and traditional villages, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or adventure seeker, the areas surrounding Muscat are sure to leave you with unforgettable memories of Oman's beauty and charm.

So pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey for Muscat day tours to nearby towns!

Treasures of Oman 6 Days – Oman Tour Package

We really enjoyed the trip overall. We saw and experienced a lot and could ask the guides anything we wanted. They were very eager and flexible to meet our needs. We had two different guides for each of the three days. With the first one we had to organize and pay for all entrance fees and drinks ourselves. This is contrary to the agreed terms. We have spent so total safe again 55 Rial extra. The program was not really known to both guides and it was sometimes positive and sometimes negative deviated from it. So we had no Dune bashing and had to pay for the Dolphin watching (which was not organized at all) and the Camel ride. The trip was not planned wisely. For example, we arrived at the market in Nizwa when everything was over. The short city tour in Muscat on Saturday did not take place at all. Thus we never saw the big mosque. This would have been one of our highlights, which we really wanted to see! The second guide was much better educated, explained more and could answer our questions precisely. Thus, we learned much more about the country and its people. We learned from this that it is not good to book a trip through two agencies involved. We also advise against changing guides during such a short trip.

Incredible Oman Tour

Incredible Oman

Was an amazing experience seeing Oman! Would highly recommend this tour to see the very diverse landscapes that Oman has to offer. The schedule was packed with a variety of things each day. Tours I’ve been on in the past had subpar accomodation. But this tour exceeded all expectations. Even in the middle of the dessert the accommodation was amazing. Some parts of the tour (specifically the hike) would be physically tiring for some. However you can always go at your own pace. And the hike is definitely worth the end result of swimming through the caves. Thank you once again, and I would definitely be interested in returning and seeing other parts of Oman (Salalah)

Excellent guide Hussein. 60 % of the positive expérience of the tour. In general I was satisfy by the tour. Well organized. Probably too short though to cover well the destination. Fortunately I extend alone 3 more nights in Muscat at the end. The negative points were: 1. too long answers to my questions before my decision to take prt on the program. it made me in the position of booking the flights at the last minute, increasing my costs. 2. The fact that I wasn not informed in advance that I joined a group that have already made the UAE tour before mine only on Oman. 3. The bus used was much too old with no suffisant climation at 35C.

This tour is a good way to see Oman beyond Muscat. Lots of time in cars, but some of this, such as driving through the desert and the canyon are part of the experience - it isn't just let's drive from A to B. There was downtime/own exploring time built in which was great as you can take advantage of the beaches or pools at the different locations - very welcome as it was so hot!

Oman is Great. So are the people. The tour touched relevant areas in Oman and gave a good overview of the country. Unfortunately the guide told us little information.after the tour I read things about our stops that would have been great to learn while we were there. Mostly probably because his English had serious limitations. He hardly understood questions. I would have wanted more time in the desert. Just over night was too short. And the mentioned dune bashing was not on offer. Tips on what to bring would have been helpful. E.g. wet shoes to wear in the Wadi Shab Trip. There were a lot of painful pebbles to walk over.

Oman Adventure (Private tour) Tour

Oman Adventure (Private tour)

Just the right flavor of activities to get a good impression of Oman. Our guide Muneer was an excellent fit with us.

Wadis,Desert and Mountains (Private tour) Tour

Wadis,Desert and Mountains (Private tour)

The tour was very well organized by GidOman. All the activities were booked as we had requested (we changed the tour slightly with two nights in the desert and two nights in the mountains). GidOman was always easy to reach via WhatsApp and responded quickly to questions and concerns. At the Turtle Reserve, we even got an upgrade to the Turtle Beach Resort instead of Sama Ras Al Jinz. We are very satisfied with GidOman and can recommend them without reservation. Every pick up by GidOman was always on time. My sister and I have celiac disease, which means that we have to eat gluten-free. This condition is not well known in Oman, but together with Aziz (our guide) we found a large selection of gluten-free bread in an organic supermarket in Muscat (Al fair) and GidOman also took care of it. The heart of our trip was our guide Aziz. We always felt very comfortable and safe with him and he really enriched the trip with his pleasant and funny demeanor. He knows the best photo spots and knows exactly when it's best to be at which activity. This allowed us to relax and unwind. Aziz was always on time, always friendly, and always well prepared for the activities (water, flashlight, waterproof cell phone case,...). He answered a lot of questions about Omani culture. Our impression is also that we were accompanied by an Omani, so we were even closer to the Omani culture. We were able to gain a lot of insights into this great country! The car was very well equipped, very comfortable and was up to all requirements from desert to mountains. Thank you very much for this great vacation!

What people love about Oman Tours from Muscat

The Highlights of Oman tour was a perfect combination of beautiful landscapes, historic sites and cultural insights. Our tour leader was excellent and very knowledgeable.
I went on this adventure with my best friend in February this year and it was amazing! We absolutely loved it. Our guide, Abdulaziz was beyond knowledgeable and took so much time answering all of our group‘s questions and explaining a lot about the history of Oman. It is such a wonderful adventure because you experience so many different sceneries - From strolling through Muscat city, on to Wadi Shab and sleeping in the desert, Misfat Al abriyeen (a village in the mountains) etc. I honestly can only recommend this adventure to anyone that visits Oman, we would 100% do it again.

Day Tours From Muscat

One of our most thrilling day experiences is to Wadi Shab and the Bimmah Sink Hole. Wadi Shab is the most popular wadi in Oman, located little under two hours from Muscat and one hour from Sur. Wadi Shab features a short climb followed by a refreshing swim through a keyhole to a stunning waterfall.

Nomad Tours also provide Oman Day Tours, Day Tours From Muscat, Muscat Day Trips, Oman Day Trip, 7 Days In Oman tour. We give you best tour experience in Oman.

Muscat Day Trips

We depart Oman Day Tours from Muscat and travel to Quriyat, then along the coast to Sur. The Bimmah sinkhole is our first visit; here you may bathe in the pristine turquoise waters while having little Red garra, sometimes known as “doctor fish,” nibble away at all the unpleasant pieces. Not for the Ticklish, of course! We’ll then drive a bit further down the coast to Wadi Shab, where our short hike will begin.

Oman Day Trip

The Swimming Pools are about an hour’s walk away, so bring some good hiking shoes, preferably two pairs, one for walking and the other for swimming, as well as a waterproof camera or GoPro if possible. We’ll bring plenty of water for you and the guide to drink while hiking.

7 days in oman

Day tour no.1.

BIMMAH SINK HOLE & WADI SHAB

Our tour to Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sink Hole is no doubt one of our most exciting day tours. Wadi Shab is the most popular wadi in Oman just under 2 hours drive from the capital Muscat and 1 hour from the town of Sur. Wadi Shab includes a short hike and then a lovely swim in clear fresh water. The highlight is to swim through the keyhole into a cave where there is a beautiful water fall.

Departing from Muscat we drive towards Quriyat and then along the coast towards Sur. Our first stop is at the Bimmah sinkhole, here you bath in the clear turquoise waters and have little Red garra otherwise known as “doctor fish” eat away at all those nasty bits. Not for the Ticklish!  We then drive a little further down the coast to Wadi Shab where we will begin the short hike.

It is about an hour’s walk to the Swimming Pools so be sure to have some shoes that you can use for both walking and swimming. We will provide plenty of water for you and the guide to take on the hike.

Day Tour No.2

BIMMAH SINK HOLE & WADI TIWI

Wadi Tiwi is just a bit further along the coast from Wadi  Shab. It to, is a  beautiful Wadi with a spectacular Waterfall. We are often asked which one do you recommend?  They are very different, so if you have two days do them both, for sure. Of course if you  do both tours we would only take you to see the Bimmah sink hole once, so we would include the Wadi Dayqah Dam instead.

If you really are forced to choose one, note that unless you are fit an agile you will struggle to get down the cliff face to be able to swim in the Waterfall at Wadi Tiwi. It is also a bit of a hike down from the car parking area through the plantations and the Falajs to the view of the waterfall.

More driving is required to drive  the twisting winding road along Wadi Tiwi to the village of Midham and you can expect to have to reverse the car  on a number of  times

It is fair to say that Wadi Tiwi is less “Touristy “

If you really are forced to choose one, note that unless you are fit an agile you will struggle to get down the cliff face to be able to swim in the  Waterfall at Wadi Tiwi. It is also a bit of a hike down from the car parking area through the plantations and the Falajs to the view of the waterfall.

Day Tour No.3

WAHIBA SANDS & WADI BANI KHALID

This is one of our most popular Tours. And fortunately the driving time has now been considerably reduced after  two tunnels where built  through the mountains. We drive from Muscat along the new highway to Ibra. just after Ibra we can see the Wahiba sands. These sands stretch all the way from the foot hills of the Eastern Hajar mountains to ththe Indian Ocean.

You will enjoy a thrilling drive through the dunes to visit a Bedouin family and an optional Camel ride.

Next we travel to one of Oman’s most popular and scenic spots Wadi Bani Khalid. A swim in the beautiful rock pools is a must so bring a towel and swimming gear but please swim in shorts and a T shirt.

Day Tour No.4

NIZWA & JEBEL SHAMS + THE GRAND CANYON

Not so long ago,  Oman was in effect two countries.  And the capital of the Interior at that time was  Nizwa it was ruled over by an Imam.  We first visit Nizwa fort with its great circular tower. It was built during the mid 17th century by Imam bin Saif Al Yarubi. We will then  check out the Nizwa souk and perhaps purchase a souvenir. A must see is the Date market you can taste the many various types.  Choose your favourite and perhaps purchase a few for the journey.

From Nizwa we drive to  the highest mountain in Oman Jebel Shams (The Mountain of the Sun). The views from the top of the Jebel are magnificent, Anyone for Base Jumping?

Day Tour No.5

WADI DAYQAH DAM & WADI ARBIYYINN & BIMMAH SINK HOLE

From Muscat it is about 1 1/2 hour drive  to Wadi Dayqah. A few years ago a very impressive dam was built to provide fresh water for the local community and beyond. It is possible to rent klayaks and paddle boats. (Not included in theprice of the Tour)

From Wadi Dayqah we drive through some beautiful date plantations and along a geological wonderland to Wadi Arbeieen  The large rock pool and the waterfall are magnificent. It is great fun to jump off the rocks and swim as far as you can against the current of the waterfall.

After a swim and a picnic lunch we drive back along the wadi and then drive towards the coast to emerge at Dibah and then we drive a short distance along the coast to visit the Bimmah Sinkhole where we can have another swim if one still has the energy and then its back to Muscat.

Day Tour No.6

NAKHAL & WUKAN & WADI HOQAIN & NAZM CASTLE

This tour includes a visit to Wukan which I think is the prettiest village in Oman, two of its most impressive forts and a beautiful wadi with water running year round.

We first stop at Nakal to visit the impressive fort and to admire the views of Date plantations from the castle walls We then visit the hot springs where if it is not to crowded it is possible to bathe

From Nakal we drive towards Rustaq and turn off to drive through Wadi Mistal and into the Ghubra Bowl. This is a bit barren but is surrounded by imposing Jebels on all sides. As we start the climb up the Jebel the majestic Village of Wukan can be seen clinging to the rock face. As we get closer it just gets more beautiful this probably is the most picturesque village in Oman. After a very steep ascent, we park and then walk up through pretty gardens with fruit trees, almonds, pomegranates, apricots, and dates. Beside the path is a Falaj with flowing water and many pools.

From Wukan we drive back and towards Rustag and then on to the beautiful Wadi al Hoqain. Water flows in this wadi all year round and it is a wonderful place for a picnic lunch

After lunch we drive to Al Hazm castle this is by far my favorite fort/castle in Oman it is beautifully restored has one of the best collection of canons in the world.

Deluge Batters U.A.E. and Oman, Killing 21

The heavy rains also flooded parts of Dubai International Airport, causing scores of flight delays and cancellations, and brought other cities in the U.A.E. to a standstill.

A relentless deluge of rain battered the United Arab Emirates and Oman this week, killing 21 people, causing scores of delays and cancellations at Dubai’s airport and bringing other cities to a standstill in what experts have described as a weather system supercharged by climate change.

The deadly storm first hit Oman on Sunday, causing widespread flash flooding and turning streets into raging rivers in Muscat, the capital. Oman’s National Committee for Emergency Management said Thursday that rescuers were still searching for two missing people.

In the U.A.E., which experienced its largest rainfall in 75 years, one person died , in the city of Ras Al-Khaimah.

By Thursday, rains had subsided and Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, had resumed some flights, though delays persisted and there were some shortages of refreshments because flooded roads had impeded deliveries. The airport was expected to operate at full capacity by Friday, it said on social media.

Here are photos and video of the flooding:
