7 U.S. Cities That Are Hipper Than You Think

Sick of $400 hotel rooms, tourist-flooded attractions, and overpriced restaurants? Take a trip to one of America’s hippest small towns. Offering equal parts art, culture, and cool factor, towns like Boise, Kansas City, and others are giving XXL metropolises like NYC and LA a run for their money. Here, 7 unexpectedly hip towns worth downsizing for.

Cincinnati has plenty of Old World charm—19th-century Art Deco architecture, historic breweries, European-style neighborhoods. But the city has also seen a great cultural revival in the past couple of years, with buzzy storefronts, boutique hotels, standout restaurants and hip bars popping up. This transformation is no more apparent than in the city’s Over-the-Rhine district—the once epicenter of German immigrant society—where an $80 million revitalization has added cool new shops (we love the craft shop MiCA 12/V ), local art galleries, and charming cafes (check out Iris BookCafĂ©, which has a secret garden replete with sculptures). Stop for a sweet bite at Holtman’s Donuts , a family-owned chain dating back to 1960, before heading to the Zaha Hadid-designed Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center , the first freestanding American museum designed by a woman (inside, you’ll find cutting-edge photography, film, and performance art). Another must-stop: The Video Archive , a Quentin Tarantino-themed speakeasy concealed behind a door in a storefront made to look like a VHS rental shop. Make your home base the art-filled 21C Museum Hotel , where there’s a free contemporary art gallery, a rooftop bar, and a see-and-be-seen restaurant.

Boise has earned a reputation as a culinary hotspot in recent years— its third-wave coffee roasters, gourmet donut shops, and tasting-menu restaurants on par with what you’d find in Portland or Seattle. Start your eatathon off with the three-hour Boise Food Tour , which covers 1.5 miles of downtown and may include stops at Juniper , a farm-to fork restaurant with an emphasis on local ingredients; Guru Donut , which sells cake and vegan varieties inspired by a handwritten 1940s donut recipe; and Mai Thai , home to some of the best Asian food in the city. Work it all off by hiking, running, or biking through The Boise Foothills, which surround the city and offer 180 miles of trails. We recommend you stay at The Modern , a motel-turned boutique hotel in the city’s Linen District, where you can unpack in your retro-chic guest room and grab a drink at the buzzy cocktail bar.

Hot hotels, a booming culinary scene, and an increasingly youthful vibe are transforming the hippest part of North Carolina’s bookish research triangle (which also includes Raleigh and Chapel Hill). Check into the 21c , a 125-key modern stunner occupying a 1930s-landmark building downtown, where contemporary arts and cultural programs are held across 10,500 square feet of exhibition space. There's also  The Durham across the street, with 53 rooms done up in poppy colors—bright yellows, blues and reds—and a slick rooftop bar. Grab a coffee and a sweet bite at Cocoa Cinnamon before heading to the Duke University campus to stroll through the Sarah P. Duke Gardens , one of the premier public gardens in the U.S. with 200-plus colorful plant varieties, and see the latest show at the Nasher Museum of Art, where previous exhibitions have included work by Henri Matisse, Ed Ruscha, and Joan Miró. For dinner, tuck into fresh seasonal dishes like paneer stuffed squash blossoms and farm duck with shiitake mushrooms, wheatberries, and sweet potato mostarda at Piedmont before catching a show at the $48 million Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).

What's not to love about Louisville? It's got killer food, music, and a unique Southern style. Bardstown Road is lined with lively bars serving local ales, craft cocktails, and, of course, bourbon—just make sure to fill your stomach with a Kentucky Hot Brown sandwich before you set out. As for where to stay? The 21c Museum Hotel Louisville is our favorite crash pad, thanks to its vast contemporary art collection, airy guest rooms with high ceilings and exposed brick, and an award-winning restaurant. If the hotel's art collection isn't cutting it, check out the Speed Art Museum , which recently underwent a $50-million renovation and expansion and has a collection spanning 6,000 years.

Kansas City

KC offers the perfect mix of high and low culture: world-class museums, next-level BBQ joints, lively sports bars, boutique shops, and more fountains than Rome (allegedly). Stay in the heart of the city at The Fontaine , which has design-forward interiors (dark woods, Persian-style carpets, chandeliers made of hand-blow Venetian glass) and an outdoor rooftop pool. From there, take an Uber to the Crossroads arts district to shop at local spots like Coki Bijoux , a French-inspired jewelry boutique tucked away in a brick alley, and Hammerpress for exquisitely designed cards and posters fresh off the printing press. For more shopping, head to Baldwin KC to rifle through stacks of selvedge denim and shop the line’s iconic vintage-inspired “KC” baseball hats. Alternatively, check out the city's thriving art scene: you can catch a concert at the Moshe Safdie-designed Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts  or browse the Bloch Galleries at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art (we especially love the new collection of Impressionist art and Art Nouveau artifacts). Our favorite spot for dinner is Port Fonda , which serves authentic Mexican eats and hosts an unbeatable happy hour with margaritas and carnitas tacos.

Minneapolis

It may be known for its Midwestern friendless and summer lake culture, but Minneapolis has a seriously creative side, too. Just look to the North Loop's Hewing Hotel , a 19th-century logging warehouse that brings together masculine, contemporary design and rustic lake house vibes. The brick-and-timber building has original pine timber beams, walls covered in work by local artists and photographers, and a rooftop Social Club. It’s a great starting point to check out dining hotspots like Bar La Grassa and The Bachelor Farmer , a slick but inviting Scandinavian restaurant. If you're pining for some culture, hit up the Walker Art Center for contemporary works and the Mill City Museum , which is built into the ruins of what was once the world’s largest flour mill, to take in exhibits by local and regional artists.

The funky college town that produced bands like R.E.M. and the B-52s has a personality all its own, which is evident in the quirky shops and restaurants of its Victorian downtown streets. The racks at Dynamite Clothing are a vintage lover’s dream, while midcentury furniture enthusiasts might prefer the digs at Starlite Showroom . If shopping isn’t your thing, grab brunch at Five & Ten , which consistently ranks among the South’s best restaurants, and features an innovative menu driven by sustainable ingredients (order the braised lamb hash with fingerling potatoes, fennel, tatsoi, maitake mushrooms and garlic). Your crash pad is the funky Graduate Athens , a onetime iron foundry with retro-fabulous dĂ©cor, an outdoor pool, coffee shop, and a music venue that doubles as a restaurant. After checking in, catch a live act at Georgia Theater , an Athens institution, then end your evening with the locals at Normal Bar .

The Montego Bay Hip Strip

hip trips live

One of Montego Bay’s most popular tourist areas is the must-see Hip Strip, located on Gloucester Avenue. It is popular for its charming bars, clubs, shops, restaurants, and plenty of other entertainment offerings.

Positioned close to many popular beaches, such as Doctor’s Cave and Aquasol Beach Park, the Hip Strip is the perfect space to enjoy the Jamaican vibe after a day on the beach. Of course, with so many choices of bars, clubs, and restaurants, it can be tough to decide where to frequent. Let’s take a look at a few of the top choices for tourists and locals alike.

Margaritaville

Opened in 1995 by two local businessmen, Margaritaville is an exciting place to have fun with your family and friends. You can enjoy both local and international food and drinks while relaxing to the tunes of the live entertainment.

There’s a wide array of water activities during the day which you can enjoy. This includes two water trampolines, a 36-meter tall waterslide, and water volleyball.

Margaritaville is located just 10 minutes from the Montego Bay Pier, in the heart of the Hip Strip. In the evenings, it transforms from a lively family restaurant into a trendy nightclub, where patrons can dance the night away to the beats from the in-house DJ’s.

There are also special themed party nights, including Ladies Night, and Glow. Margaritaville has also been visited by many celebrities, such as Tiger Woods, Nelly, and Uma Thurman. There is no cover charge to enter this venue.

Blue Beat Ultra Lounge

Located on the Montego Bay Harbor front, just next door to Margaritaville is the more sophisticated and upmarket jazz and martini bar, Blue Beat Ultra Lounge, which was opened in 2004 as the first of its kind in Montego Bay.

Offering the best in local live bands, including the resident band, Scotch, as well as an in-house DJ, visitors can enjoy fresh drinks while soaking in the vibes of the local talent. There are also themed nights, such as Saturday’s Guest List and Copacabana Latin Flair, where the music transports you to a different time and place.

In addition to great music, Blue Beat Ultra Lounge also offers live comedy nights and unplugged music evenings, as well as an outdoor lounge area with couches and chairs, just meters from the Caribbean Sea. The cover charge is dependent on the event on the night.

Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club

You can think of the Doctor’s Cave as the #1 beach in Montego Bay or at least on the hip strip. It’s a nice place for locals and tourists to relax on a warm, sunny day.

It’s a white sand beach and is almost always packed with tourists. The price to enter this beach is around 5 U.S. dollars and it’s well worth the price.

The Brewery

Considered Montego Bay’s most popular nightlife spots, The Brewery is an eccentric blend between a British pub and a Jamaican jerk-pork pit.

This unique venue features a wooden bar and is decorated with medieval collectibles and mementos. There is also a covered veranda out the back of the bar, which overlooks Gloucester Avenue as the party goers make their way to their respective hang outs. There is no cover charge to enter this venue.

Jamaican Bobsled Cafe

Specializing in New York style pizza, the Jamaican Bobsled Café is a well-loved restaurant where customers can count down the time until the next winter Olympic Games on the big digital clock while enjoying fresh pizza, burgers, salads, and platters.

The Jamaican bobsled that won the 1988 Winter Olympics is also located at this venue, and you can pay to get a photograph of you and your friends and family in it. The indoor and outdoor seating at Jamaican Bobsled Café makes this an ideal spot to enjoy some food with a bit of history. There is no cover charge to enter this venue.

Other Restaurants

There’s a ton of other restaurants and cafes’ on the hip strip too. As you walk the stretch, you’ll come across a few others like the pelican grill and the pork pit each which serves up delicious bites. If you’re looking for fast food, you’ll be happy to know that burger king can be found on the hip strip too.

Accommodation and Hotels

Because of its location, the hip strip has quite a few hotels and inclusive resorts running on it. You’ll find Royal Decameron Montego Beach, Grand Pineapple Montego Bay and Sandls Inn just to name a few.

While this little spot isn’t positioned on the hip strip it’s relatively close (about 2 minutes drive).

It’s worth mentioning because it’s also a fun hang out spot.

Poised on a small pier, this quirky little bar is an affordable and entertaining little gem. Pier One is the perfect spot to enjoy a few cheap drinks while bobbing to the live music. Friday nights are a favorite, where the themed Pier Pressure ladies night offers rum drinks at just $2 each.

Pier One also doubles as a restaurant, featuring some of the best seafood in town, among a wide variety of other offerings. Their main stage is home to events including the Dancehall Queen and Reggae Sumfest. The cover charge is dependent on the event on the night.

There are so many fantastic bars, clubs, hotels, and restaurants on the Montego Bay Hip Strip. The above is only the tip of the iceberg. If you’re in Mobbay be sure to walk the strip. You won’t be disappointed.

4 travel tips to put your mind at ease during your next trip

hip trips live

The season of summer holiday travel is just around the corner.

You might find yourself heading to one of the U.S.’s many national parks, exploring a historic European city or jetting off somewhere tropical, like the Maldives.

That all sounds like fun, but unfortunately, travel mishaps may also happen. Luggage gets lost, passports get misplaced and phones may not work at international destinations when they aren't connected to Wi-Fi.

To avoid the headaches and prepare for whatever may come your way (or what accidentally gets left behind), follow these simple tips.

Watch this video to see the four things you should do before your next trip.

Learn more: Best credit cards of 2023

Pre-Travel Tips

All you need to get travel-ready is your smartphone.

  • Take pictures.

Take pictures and screenshots of the important items and documents before you leave for your trip.

This would include:

  • Your luggage
  • The photo page of your passport
  • Your ID cards
  • Any travel-related confirmations
  • Location and contact details for the places you’re staying

Creating an album on your phone or marking the images as favorites will make it easier to find them should you need them.

It couldn’t hurt to also share these pictures with a trusted loved one, like a significant other or close friend.

  • Turn on Notify When Left Behind

Turn on Notify When Left Behind if you use Apple products.

The feature, available on some iPhones, iPads, Macs, and AirPods, will notify you if you are separated from your items, like if you forget your AirPods in your hotel room.

To turn Notify When Left Behind on or off, open the “Find My” app, select the device and then toggle the setting on or off.

  • Tell your credit card company about your plans

Have you ever had your card payment declined when paying for something on a trip? That’s probably because your credit card company is picking up unusual activity and flagging it as suspicious.

Prevent that from happening by informing your credit card company of any upcoming domestic or international travel by setting a travel notification.

Many credit card companies allow you to set the notification online or via the app, though some companies may not require one at all.

  • Check international phone plans

If you want to use your phone when you're not connected to Wi-Fi while traveling, see what international phone plans your mobile carrier offers that fit your budget. An international plan will allow you to do things like make and receive phone calls, access social media and find directions as long as you have cell service. Without a plan, those functions will only be available when the device is connected to Wi-Fi.

Bonus tip, you can download maps to use offline and easily navigate a new place!

IDF fires artillery shells into Gaza as fighting between Israeli troops and Islamist Hamas militants continues on Oct. 12, 2023.

Iranian commandos seize an Israeli-linked container ship near Strait of Hormuz

The Associated Press

This image made from a video provided to The Associated Press by a Mideast defense official shows a helicopter raid targeting a vessel near the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Commandos from Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard rappelled down from a helicopter onto an Israeli-affiliated container ship near the Strait of Hormuz and seized the vessel Saturday, the latest in a series of attacks between the two countries.

The Middle East had braced for potential Iranian retaliation over a suspected Israeli strike earlier this month on an Iranian consular building in Syria that killed 12 people, including a senior Guard general who once commanded its expeditionary Quds Force there.

The Israeli war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip meanwhile is now 6 months old and is inflaming decades-old tensions across the whole region. With Iranian-backed forces like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Yemen's Houthi rebels also involved in the fighting, any new attack in the Mideast threatens to escalate that conflict into a wider regional war.

Iran's state-run IRNA said a special forces unit of the Guard's navy carried out the attack on the vessel, the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, a container ship associated with London-based Zodiac Maritime.

Biden returns to D.C. a day early to a Situation Room huddle on Iran-Israel row

Middle East

Biden says iran could soon attack israel, and warns, 'don't'.

Zodiac Maritime is part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer's Zodiac Group. Zodiac declined to comment and referred questions to MSC. Geneva-based MSC later acknowledged the seizure and said 25 crew had been aboard the vessel.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure their wellbeing, and safe return of the vessel," MSC said.

An Indian government official, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to brief to journalists, said 17 of the crew were Indians.

IRNA said the Guard would take the vessel into Iranian territorial waters.

Earlier, a Middle East defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, shared a video of the attack with The Associated Press. In it, the Iranian commandos are seen rappelling down onto a stack of containers sitting on the deck of the vessel.

A crew member on the ship can be heard saying: "Don't come out." He then tells his colleagues to go to the ship's bridge as more commandos come down on the deck. One commando can be seen kneeling above the others to provide them potential cover fire.

The video corresponded with known details of the MSC Aries. The helicopter used also appeared to be a Soviet-era Mil Mi-17 helicopter, which both the Guard and the Iranian-backed Houthis of Yemen have used in the past to conduct commando raids on ships.

The British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations described the vessel as being "seized by regional authorities" in the Gulf of Oman off the Emirati port city of Fujairah, without elaborating.

How Iran and Israel became archenemies

How Iran and Israel became archenemies

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz called on nations to list the Guard as a terrorist organization.

Iran "is a criminal regime that supports Hamas' crimes and is now conducting a pirate operation in violation of international law," Katz said.

Iran since 2019 has engaged a series of ship seizures and attacks on vessels have been attributed to it amid ongoing tensions with the West over its rapidly advancing nuclear program.

Since November, Iran had dialed back its ship attacks as the Houthis targeted ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. Houthi attacks have slowed in recent weeks as the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan ended and the rebels have faced months of U.S.-led airstrikes targeting them.

In previous seizures, Iran has offered initial explanations about its operations to make it seem like the attacks had nothing to do with the wider geopolitical tensions — though later acknowledging as much. In Saturday's attack, however, Iran tellingly offered no explanation for the seizure other than to say the MSC Aries had links to Israel.

Iran has been threatening to act after Israeli strike in Syria

For days, Iranian officials up to and including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have been threatening to "slap" Israel for the Syria strike. Western governments have issued warnings to their citizens in the region to be prepared for attacks.

However, Iran in the past largely has avoided directly attacking Israel, despite it carrying out the targeted killing of nuclear scientists and multiple sabotage campaigns against Iran's atomic sites. Iran has, however, targeted Israeli or Jewish-linked sites through proxy forces over the decades.

Earlier this week, Guard Gen. Ali Reza Tangsiri, who oversees Iran's naval forces, criticized the presence of Israelis in the region and in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE reached a diplomatic recognition deal with Israel in 2020, something that long has enraged Tehran.

"We know that bringing Zionists in this point is not merely for economic work," Tangsiri reportedly said. "Now, they are carrying out security and military jobs, indeed. This is a threat, and this should not happen."

With little fanfare, Gaza war enters a new stage, from high to low intensity

With little fanfare, Gaza war enters a new stage, from high to low intensity

The U.S., Israel's main backer, has stood by the country despite growing concerns over Israel's war on Gaza killing more than 33,600 Palestinians and wounding over 76,200 more. Israel's war began after Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken hostage.

On Friday, President Joe Biden warned Iran not to attack Israel and said he felt an Iranian attack on Israel likely would happen "sooner than later."

"We will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed," Biden added.

The Gulf of Oman is near the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which a fifth of all globally traded oil passes. Fujairah, on the United Arab Emirates' eastern coast, is a main port in the region for ships to take on new oil cargo, pick up supplies or trade out crew.

Since 2019, the waters off Fujairah have seen a series of explosions and hijackings. The U.S. Navy blamed Iran for limpet mine attacks on vessels that damaged tankers. The UAE meanwhile has sought to mend ties with Iran and issued a statement condemning the suspected Israeli attack in Syria.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa Group said on Saturday it had extended the suspension of its flights between Frankfurt and Tehran though Thursday and said that all of its planes would avoid Iranian airspace in that period. The German carrier also said that, until at least Tuesday, flights to and from Amman will be operated as "day flights" so crews can return to Frankfurt without spending a night in the Jordanian capital.

Dutch airline KLM said in a statement Saturday that it will no longer fly over Iran or Israel, but will continue flights to and from Tel Aviv, a destination not currently deemed risky. "Safety has the highest priority," KLM said.

Iran launches barrage of strikes toward Israel

By Tori B. Powell , Sophie Tanno, Emma Tucker , Kaanita Iyer , Paul LeBlanc and Adrienne Vogt , Jerome Taylor and James Legge, CNN

Our live coverage of Iran's attack on Israel has moved here .

Iran warns its response will be "stronger and more resolute" if Israel retaliates following latest strikes

From CNN’s Alireza Hajihosseini and Eyad Kourdi

An anti-missile system operates as seen from Ashkelon, Israel, on Sunday.

Iran has warned that it will respond with more force if Israel retaliates over this weekend's strikes, which Tehran said were themselves a reply to an Israeli attack earlier this month on its embassy complex in Syria's capital Damascus.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right of self-defense when required," Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said in a statement.

Citing self-defense against repeated Israeli military aggressions, Iravani said the strikes were specifically in retaliation to an Israeli attack on April 1 against what Iran says were diplomatic facilities in Damascus.

Iran claims the attack violated international law and led to the death of seven Iranian military advisors, including key commanders from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The statement also criticizes the United Nations Security Council for “failing to uphold international peace,” allowing Israel to “breach” established international norms and “escalate” regional tensions.

Additional context: Israel has carried out numerous strikes on Iran-backed targets in Syria, often targeting weapons shipments allegedly intended for Hezbollah, a powerful Iranian proxy in Lebanon.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the April 1 attack which destroyed an Iranian consulate building in the capital Damascus, including Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a top Revolutionary Guards commander.

However an Israel Defense Forces spokesman told CNN that their intelligence showed the building was not a consulate and was instead “a military building of Quds forces disguised as a civilian building.”

China expresses 'deep concern', calls for ceasefire

From CNN's Philip Wang and Irene Nasser

China has expressed "deep concern" over the "current escalation" following Iran's attack on Israel, according to a spokesperson for its Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, adding that it is a "spillover of the Gaza conflict" and a ceasefire should be implemented without delay.

In a statement, China called "on relevant parties to exercise calm and restraint to prevent further escalations."

"The ongoing situation is the latest spillover of the Gaza conflict," the spokesperson said, adding that a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas should be implemented without any more delay.

Beijing did not  name or condemn Hamas  in the wake of the initial October 7 attacks. Since then, it has condemned the war and been a vocal  proponent of an immediate ceasefire  and the implementation of a “two-state” solution.

Last month, Chinese diplomat Wang Kejian met Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar, the first meeting between a Chinese and Hamas official publicly acknowledged by Beijing since the outbreak of the  war in Gaza .

Wang’s visit follows efforts by Beijing to step up its profile as a  peace broker in the Middle East conflict.

US forces intercepted 70+ drones and at least three ballistic missiles, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Haley Britzky

US forces intercepted more than 70 one-way attack drones and at least three ballistic missiles during Iran's attack on Israel, according to two US officials familiar with the situation.

The ballistic missiles were intercepted by warships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, one of the officials said. Iran launched more than 100 ballistic missiles in total at Israel, according to a senior administration official.

The US Navy currently has two destroyers in that area, both are guided missile destroyers capable of intercepting missile and drone launches.

US fighter jets were also part of the response to Iran’s attack on Saturday and shot down drones launched towards Israel, another US official told CNN.

Biden to meet with G7 leaders Sunday as he condemns Iran's "brazen attack"

From CNN’s Lauren Koenig

US President Joe Biden will meet with G7 leaders Sunday “to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack,” according to a statement released by the White House.

“My team will engage with their counterparts across the region. And we will stay in close touch with Israel’s leaders,” the statement from Biden reads. “And while we have not seen attacks on our forces or facilities today, we will remain vigilant to all threats and will not hesitate to take all necessary action to protect our people.”

US defensive assets moved to the region earlier this week and “helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles,” according to the statement.

Biden also spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu following Saturday’s attack “to reaffirm America’s ironclad commitment to the security of Israel.”

United Airlines cancels three Middle East flights

From CNN’s Sara Smart

At least three United Airlines flights headed to or departing from the Middle East have been canceled amid the ongoing conflict unfolding between Iran and Israel.

On Saturday a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Tel Aviv, a flight from Washington D.C. to Amman, Jordan, and one from Dubai to Newark were canceled, the airline told CNN in a statement.

There have been no changes to any Sunday flights for United as of Saturday night, according to the airline.

CNN has reached out to other airlines regarding cancellations.

Biden told Netanyahu US will not participate in offensive operations against Iran, US official says

From CNN's MJ Lee

A US Marine guards the entrance to the West Wing of the White House on Saturday.

The US will not participate in any offensive operations against Iran, US President Joe Biden has made clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a senior administration official told CNN.

The comments were relayed during the phone call that the two leaders shared in the aftermath of Iran's retaliatory strikes against Israel.

Biden tells Netanyahu tonight was a win, nothing of "value" hit in Israel, US official says

Israel should consider tonight a win because the current US assessment is that Iran’s attacks had been largely unsuccessful and demonstrated Israel’s superior military capability, President Joe Biden told Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in their phone call, a senior administration official told CNN.

The US’s assessment tonight was that almost all of the drones and missiles – including more than 100 ballistic missiles -- launched by Iran had been knocked out of the sky. No cruise missile made impact, the official said, and nothing of “value” was hit.

Bolton: 'Passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake'

From CNN's Heather Chen

John Bolton, the former US national security adviser and ambassador to the UN, said “passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake,” warning of more attacks.

“This is not time to play academic games and message and signal. This is a question of power,” Bolton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. "If they came from a different location containing nuclear warheads, Israel might not be so lucky.”

A known Iran policy hawk, Bolton served in senior national security positions during the Trump and Bush administrations. A neoconservative, Bolton has in the past advocated war with Iran and a pre-emptive strike on North Korea.

In 2022, he was the target of an alleged assassination attempt orchestrated by a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

He has warned against underestimating Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran has said is for peaceful purposes only.

“I think we have enough experience with faulty intelligence by now, not to be so sure, not to know how much of Iran’s uranium enrichment program is really being conducted under a mountain in North Korea,” Bolton said.

If Tehran sent “a wire transfer to Pyongyang,” it would give the North Koreans “enough time to put a couple of warheads on an airplane and fly them to Tehran. (But) if you take away their nuclear capability, that would be a dramatic hit to the regime, maybe enough to topple it.”

The never-ending Young Thug trial that could reshape hip-hop

The atlanta rap star is at the center of one of the most complex, chaotic cases in georgia’s history, accused of running a murderous gang under the guise of a record label.

ATLANTA — Two years in the Fulton County court system have turned Young Thug into an iPad kid. With each passing day, he looks less and less like the musical prodigy who came out of the Atlanta projects and redefined the sound and style of trap. Who spent his 20s touring the world and blowing minds, just as likely to pose for cameras in a leather jacket as a billowing couture dress. Now, he wears a blank face in the chilly courtroom where guards deposit him most mornings.

The man born Jeffery Lamar Williams, now 32, pecks at a tablet. He swipes, he taps, he barely rises when the judge walks in. Thug paws at the screen as lawyers who will help decide whether he spends the next 20 years in prison crack their morning sodas and their morning jokes. “Is that Schlitz?” the judge asks. “Gotta stay warm in here somehow,” an attorney says. Ha ha ha. Tap tap tap.

It is a February morning, the 654th day since Williams was jailed without bond and accused of running a murderous gang posing as a red-hot record label. Jury selection lasted a full year; the trial is likely to run past the next presidential election. When a forensic biologist takes the stand to explain the finer points of a “molecular Xerox machine” in relation to an alleged assault from 2013, Thug crosses his arms across his 6-foot-3-inch frame, closes his eyes and sinks toward the defense table. On the gallery’s hard wooden benches, where a scrap of foam is impressed with the butt cheeks of some long-gone observer, a deputy will nod off before the hearing ends.

This is the same case that has obsessed the rap world and drawn scrutiny from legal scholars for its high drama and high stakes. It’s the trial that has made tabloid headlines for its mishaps: pornographic Zoom-bombing and jurors’ faces accidentally live-streamed. One of Williams’s co-defendants has been accused of a hand-to-hand drug swap in full view of the judge. A deputy was arrested for allegedly smuggling contraband into jail and having an “inappropriate relationship” with another co-defendant who has since been severed from the case.

“It’s been a wild ride,” said Jack Lerner, co-author of “Rap on Trial: A Legal Guide for Attorneys,” who is following the trial along with innumerable rap fans, concerned about its potential chilling effect on the industry. “They brought this massive [racketeering] case into a regular Georgia courtroom, Fulton County courtroom, that really wasn’t set up for a case this massive.”

But most days are morbid monotony. Thug stares forlornly into the news cameras. Living on chips and chocolate in jail, his lawyers say , he sleeps little. They say the government is trying to silence a generational Black artist using a case so thin that the indictment document cites Thug’s own lyrics as “overt act[s] in furtherance of the conspiracy.”

“Gave the lawyer close to two mil. He handles all the killings,” Thug sang on 2019’s album “So Much Fun,” now transcribed in the official court records. “We don’t speak ’bout s--- on wax. It’s all mob business. We know to kill the biggest cats of all kittens.”

T he Fulton County Superior Courthouse sits less than five miles from Cleveland Avenue, nicknamed Bleveland Avenue for the Bloods-affiliated gangs that dominate the neighborhood, where Williams was raised as one of 11 children.

His childhood apartment was demolished when he was about 18 years old. A few years later, Thug released his debut mixtape “I Came From Nothing.”

He sounded like no one else in the macho world of Southern rap, layering sophomoric and nonsensical lyrics over hard-nosed trap beats. The Washington Post’s music critic Chris Richards would later describe his work as the sound of a “world being dismantled.”

Thug was quickly scooped up by legendary Atlanta artist Gucci Mane, with whom he shares an ice cream cone face tattoo, and his career only accelerated. He left Bleveland for Buckhead — a tony part of Atlanta near a shopping mall with storefronts of Cartier and Gucci. By 2019, Thug had won a Grammy, collaborated with Elton John and established himself as one of the hottest upcoming stars in the fast-evolving world of rap.

Fame and money amplified Thug’s unique style. His manager told a Fader reporter in 2014 that he “eats no real food.” GQ wrote two years later he was injected with vitamins each month. He once ordered everyone who entered his home to wear white, according to a Complex reporter. He wore an Alessandro Trincone dress for the cover of his 2016 album “Jeffery.” The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston later displayed the dress in its “ Gender Bending Fashion ” exhibition.

He is unapologetically a rapper of the South, which has largely displaced acts from the East and West coasts on the charts. When a Complex reporter drove with Thug by a 20-story housing project in Manhattan in 2021, Thug envied the balcony views not seen in Atlanta projects.

“That is why you can’t compare to us, because you can still go to the top floor of your building and see the world, and see how you want to be,” he said . “We gotta literally go to prison and get put on an airplane to get this high.”

T hug’s rise in the 2010s loosely coincided with increasing public concern about violent crime in Atlanta, with calls for authorities to take major action. Prosecutors under District Attorney Fani T. Willis (D) set their sights on Young Thug and about two dozen others believed to be associated with him. Investigators searched social media posts for gang signs and came to believe that some of Thug’s lyrics about crimes and shootings were based in reality.

Thug was one of 28 people arrested in raids across the city on May 9, 2022. An 88-page indictment lays out the government’s case that they operated as a gang called Young Slime Life — which prosecutors noted bore the same initials as Thug’s music label, Young Stoner Life.

“The members and associates of YSL moved like a pack, with defendant Jeffery Williams as its head,” lead prosecutor Adriane Love would say during opening statements at the trial.

Specifically, Thug was accused of renting a car used in the fatal 2015 drive-by that led to a gang war between two Bloods sets. But he was accused of involvement in a long list of homicides, armed robberies, aggravated assaults, theft, drug dealing, carjacking and witness intimidation that his co-defendants are charged with.

Thug’s attorney Brian Steel denies the charges against his client, who pleaded not guilty.

“The prosecution has taken a young man who was born into no opportunity, despair and hardship. And he has become a world-renowned, award-winning musical artist,” Steel told The Post last year.

Thug has essentially lived behind bars since his arrest, barring infrequent excursions such as a trip to his sister’s funeral last year. He is driven 20 miles from his jail cell to the courthouse every weekday morning, to bear silent witness to one of the most complex racketeering cases in Georgia’s history.

Legal experts told The Post that it is unconventional that Thug and his co-defendants are being prosecuted under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) — a legal framework prominently used in the 1980s to punish mafia activity, and which Willis and her prosecutors will also use to try former president Donald Trump on election fraud charges this summer.

RICO laws allow prosecutors to dismantle entire criminal organizations, from the street level to the top. If convicted, Thug and his five remaining co-defendants (the others either cut plea deals or will be tried separately) could face up to two decades in prison. But RICO cases are also notoriously massive, complicated and unwieldy, creating opportunity for disruptions and delays — all on ample display during this case’s long windup.

T he screams startled everyone. It was April 19, 2023 — midway through the case’s year-long jury selection process that sifted through more than 2,000 potential people. Thug’s head shot up and some of his co-defendants leaped to their feet as Rodalius Ryan — an alleged member of Thug’s crew already serving life in prison for a 2015 murder — cried for help from a cell down a hallway from the courtroom.

Footage of the incident shows deputies almost losing control of the room. Cordarius Dorsey, another co-defendant, tried to barge past deputies at the door in an apparent attempt to reach Ryan. Max Schardt, who was representing Shannon Stillwell, implored the room with outstretched arms: “Everybody just chill!”

It was later reported that Ryan was screaming as deputies strip searched him. They allegedly found two packages of marijuana sewn into his underwear, according to body-camera footage aired on local news.

On most days, the courtroom is kept under control by Judge Ural D. Glanville, a career Army man and a joyful disciplinarian, who enters the courtroom each day with his service dog, a black Labrador named Jack.

When a potential juror skipped court to visit the Dominican Republic last year, Glanville ordered them to write a 30-page essay in APA style, with primary and secondary sources. When a juror asked for the courtroom to be made warmer, Glanville replied that he kept it cold to keep everyone awake. The judge told an attorney who showed up late to a hearing in May that he would be held in contempt unless he bought everyone lunch. (The lawyer ordered chicken wings from a nearby strip club.) And as Glanville grows frustrated with the trial’s plodding pace — prosecutors by mid-April had so far only made it through about a quarter of more than 200 expected witnesses — he has threatened to hold court on the weekends.

But the surreality of the case sometimes gets away from the judge. Glanville inadvertently went viral on social media in the trial’s first week for reading out Young Thug’s lyrics in his monotone drawl. “F--- the police (f--- ’em), in a high speed,” Glanville recited, butchering the flow. “F--- the judge.”

Other incidents have been more serious. A video of a defendant’s interrogation was leaked online last year, sparking an investigation. A defense attorney in the trial has been arrested on charges of bringing prescription pills into the courthouse and allegedly throwing his cellphone at a deputy’s head. A potential juror was briefly jailed for recording court proceedings.

Less than a month of the start of the long-anticipated trial, in December, Glanville paused proceedings for several weeks after Stillwell was stabbed in the Fulton County Jail.

P rosecutors have been using rap lyrics as evidence since at least the 1990s, with mixed success and despite criticism that White musicians are rarely accused of doing the things they sing about. (No one ever charged Johnny Cash for saying he shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.)

A history of prosecuting rap lyrics

“I think we should all be uneasy when forms of artistic expression are taken as literal truths almost as public confession. There’s a real slippery slope,” said Anthony Michael Kreis, a law professor at Georgia State University in downtown Atlanta.

Asked for comment, the DA’s office pointed to the judge’s November 2023 ruling that “the lyric and related social media evidence is logically and legally relevant and, thus, conditionally admitted.”

The trial is a sensation online, with thousands of comments under a live stream from the courtroom and entertainment sites covering every legal argument and cultural repercussion. “Chance the Rapper’s Birthday Wish Is For Young Thug To Be Released From Jail,” read a BET headline Wednesday.

In Atlanta, where rap is a multibillion-dollar industry , up-and-coming artists also have a wary eye on the trial.

“They’re looking at [DA] Fani [Willis] like she’s turned Atlanta into Gotham,” said musician Langston Bleu. “It’s not cool to be guilty of something just because you’re really good at selling that.”

Atlanta musician Cade Fortunat, who sings under the name 4TUNAT, found it laughable that lyrics could be considered evidence. When a rapper puts the word “Glock” or “AK-47” into a track, he said, they are more likely to be considering the syllabic structure of the word than remembering a real event.

Z6Saint, native Atlantean and rapper, noted Young Thug’s imprisonment has not drawn many public protests. But he worries what will happen to the next generation of rappers if Thug and others are muzzled.

“I don’t think people are too worried about it,” he said. “They probably should be more worried about it.”

If Thug has been chilled, it’s not readily apparent. He released a new album, “ Business Is Business ” in June 2023, illustrated with an image of himself at the defense table beneath an empty judge’s bench.
