Here’s How To Recycle Your Electric Bike Battery, And Why You Should

In the fall of 2020, I picked up my first e-bike, a Specialized Levo SL , and it soon became my primary mode of transportation. I rode it to friend’s houses, the grocery store and local trails, among other places. The bike allowed me to keep my truck parked in the driveway, without being late or sweaty for work meetings, dinners with friends and even a few first dates. And, I was not alone.

The pandemic bike boom sent sales skyrocketing, tripling the electric bike market almost overnight. E-bikes became the fastest growing segment of EVs in the country, which created new possibilities for the future of transportation, but all the fanfare came with a catch: E-bike batteries have a limited lifespan and, at the time, were hard to recycle when they ran out of juice.

Recognizing the risk of millions of batteries ending up in landfills, Call2Recycle , a logistics non-profit, partnered with dozens of bike brands to create a nationwide battery recycling program in 2022. Rather than throwing batteries in a landfill, e-bike owners can now drop them off at one of 1,900 participating shops , where they are shipped to a facility and recycled into new battery components.

Recycling your e-bike battery has never been easier, or more important.

The Best Mattress Sales And Deals Available This Weekend

Ge profile smart indoor smoker review: a revolutionary gadget for smoked meats, why is e-bike battery recycling important.

The non-profit advocacy group People for Bikes projects that 12 million e-bikes will be sold in the US between 2020 and 2030, helping reduce our collective carbon footprint. However, the positive impact of e-bikes is capped if we do not recycle their power sources, because virgin battery materials come at a high cost.

Manufacturing batteries requires a significant amount of nickel, cobalt and copper, and mining these metals is an incredibly resource-intensive process. Fortunately, because metal atoms don’t degrade, there are no trade-offs to performance or battery life in recycled battery metals. This allows e-bikes to be recycled almost infinitely. Yet, less than 5% of lithium-ion batteries get recycled today.

The average e-bike battery typically lasts 1,000 cycles, or three to five years. Therefore, many e-bikes sold early in the bike boom are nearing the end of their life. The new program, Hungry For Batteries , has scaled quickly to address this need. It now has 56 bike brands involved, including motor companies like Bosch, Shimano and Yamaha, as well as major manufacturers like Cannondale, Giant, Trek and Specialized. REI is also committed to this first-of-its-kind battery recycling program.

Call2Recycle's battery recycling kit makes it easy and safe to ship old e-bike batteries for ... [+] recycling.

How Does The Recycling Program Work?

To subsidize the costs of packaging and shipping batteries—not to mention training staff at bike shops—the program pools money from partner brands. Call2Recycle acts as the middleman between the network of shops, bike brands and the recycling facilities, teaching proper packaging and shipping, permitting with governments and working with UPS and FedEx to ship batteries legally and safely.

The process starts when a customer buys an e-bike at a shop and is introduced to the program by staff. Years later, when a battery shows signs of breaking down—long charging times, fluctuations in power and losing charge quickly—the owner finds a nearby drop-off point and brings the battery in.

Every drop-off point is trained on how to inspect batteries for damage and properly package them, before shipping the units to a facility for recycling. The entire process is prepaid, removing financial barriers for the customer. Call2Recycle works with multiple processors, including Redwood Materials , who recycle batteries from the likes of Ford, Toyota, Audi, Volkswagen and Lyft.

Once Redwood receives the battery, they recycle the nickel, cobalt, lithium and copper, retaining more than 95% of these materials for new battery components. This reduces the reliance on virgin materials, and in turn reduces cost. Redwood currently recycles the equivalent of 15 million e-bike batteries each year. They view batteries stashed in drawers and garages as the largest "mine" left on the planet.

Copper that's recovered from e-bike batteries is recycled, processed and ready to be used again.

Recycling E-Bike Batteries In The Future

Together, bike manufacturers, Call2Recycle and recycling facilities have created a convenient, widely accessible (67% of the US population lives within 10 miles of a drop-off spot) and nearly frictionless pathway to recycle e-bike batteries. Looking forward, the biggest challenge for the Hungry For Batteries program is education with e-bike owners, new and old.

In its first full year, the program recycled 60,000 pounds of e-bike batteries, a testament to the strength of the partnership. Even still, there is much more recycling capacity than demand, meaning the program has room to scale. In the coming years, Call2Recycle hopes to get more manufacturers onboard and educate more customers, which will help grow the program even larger.

Join the movement for a greener future by responsibly recycling your e-bike batteries when they no longer hold a charge, suffer from damage or die quickly. This not only reduces our reliance on new metal mining but also ensures that precious materials remain in circulation, paving the way for a healthier planet for years to come
