As someone with limited data, I’m always astounded how few apps work well offline and without data. I’m often toying with a new phone app that I can play while on the road.  After far too many apps that I’ve burned through during a long bus ride, I’ve asked my fellow bloggers for their favorite travel game apps for iPhone and Android that work perfectly offline, so even if you’re on a long plane ride, you can still enjoy playing on your phone!  I’ve tried to focus this list on thought-provoking games for your phone that challenge your mind, rather than games that just keep you busy (as they’re addictive).

The best game apps for travel for iPhone and Android

Monument valley (and its sequels).

From the moment I discovered this game in House of Cards, I was addicted to this elegant game. Its beautiful Escher-like concept together with its clever puzzles make it a joy to play.  I’ve bought the sequels as well. It has the feel of a puzzle game without the strain of doing a puzzle.     (My husband is begging me for a turn!)

Device6 is a clever and unique game only for iPhones. For game lovers who are looking for different and mind-bending, try out this game. It integrates literature with fantasy and puzzles. We don’t want to ruin the surprise!

If you are looking for something to keep you occupied during an 8-hour flight, look no further than “Don’t Starve”. In its essence, Don’t Starve is a wilderness survival game. Your character is dropped in an unfamiliar wasteland and your task is, quite simply, not to die.

Unlike most other games today, Don’t Starve doesn’t come with a tutorial which means it’s 100% up to you to figure out how to play this game. It is challenging and engaging. You need to be strategic and creative.

You’ll need to figure out how to feed yourself, how to defend yourself against enemies, and how to find shelter. If you die, you will have to start over from scratch and the world you find may be entirely different from the previous.

Challenge yourself and see how long you can survive. With my best efforts, I haven’t made it past 8 days yet! It may be a paid game, but it is worth every cent and works perfectly without an internet connection! Just be warned, it’s almost impossible to put down 😉  – Jacky

I love this choose-your-own adventure game where you try to help your character get around the world.  Along the way, your character will get into all sorts of trouble (of course). 

Maybe it’s my love of travel, but I have an intense love for the Victorian steampunk world full of delight, splendor, and laughs.  It’s fun to play this with a friend sitting next to you–and you’ll not want to put this game down.

Ever dream of destroying the human race?  Want to destroy the human race without being labeled a mass murderer?  Try Plague Inc.  Plague Inc. is a strategy game where you become a small microbe and get to infect people around the world.  The goal is to spread quickly and kill of the humans before they notice and decide to start creating a cure.

This game is a major time killer.  The standard game has four different microbes you can become at 4 difficulty levels. Each microbe has different characteristics.  The different levels can make the game easy or hard.  Each game is different and that’s not just due to the microbe or difficulty level. 

You have to evolve your microbe.  How you chose to affect the humans can vary.  Do you go for the quick kill or a long drawn-out illness?  Should you start your illness in a populated country or one of the more remote islands of the world?   I love that each game takes less than 30 minutes and I am always experimenting new ways to destroy the world.  – Jennifer

This free app with a reasonable subscription to the New York Times Crossword is so worth it if you’re into crosswords. The Saturday and Sunday crosswords are my favorite although they’re generally the hardest. It’s especially fun to do it with a loved one as you can debate on who has the correct answer to the clue!

Before a plane ride, just remember to hit download on all the crosswords that you want to be downloaded for the flight–and you should be entertained for hours.  (This is even easier to use on a tablet.)

Heads Up was the perfect game to play as a group or pair when time was moving slower than a sloth getting out of bed on a Sunday. The premise is simple: one person holds their phone to their forehead while the rest of the group try to describe or act out the word on the screen. When they guess correctly, the player tilts the phone to get a new word described. While there doesn’t always need to be a “winner”, of course the person with the most correct guesses does the best!

There’s plenty to enjoy about the game; it doesn’t require much prior knowledge, involves everyone in a group, you can play as little or as long as you like, and often any language differences can add an element of hilarity to the game.

As a game that doesn’t invite too much serious competitiveness or over-challenging tasks, it’s a great way to have a laugh with new and old friends. I have extremely fond memories of this game from my travels, I associate it with meeting new people from all sorts of cultures, making great memories, and learning a thing or two about my acting and describing skills! – Suzy

Leo’s Fortune

Guide a green fluffball with a mustache through progressively more difficult levels of cliffs, forests, gears, levers, deserts, and more. Leo tells you his sad story as you try and help him recover his gold. His expressive eyes and fluffiness are so well-animated, it makes flinging him up on a branch that much more rewarding.

The developers spent some money on the voiceover for this game, and it shows, I genuinely missed Leo when I finished it! You will want headphones for this one to get the full experience. Lovers of platformers will particularly enjoy this game. – Erin

Alto’s Adventure

I’ve played this one off and on for years, as it’s a classic side-scrolling jumping game and perfect for killing time in short bursts. Alto is a snowboarder, and you’re attempting to get as far as you can while avoiding rocks, reindeer, posts and other obstacles.

There’s the added fun of trying to incorporate flips and tricks, and board sliding bunting. You eventually unlock other skiers with different skills too. It’s beautifully animated, with a minimalistic aesthetic, as you’re seeing pretty much everything in silhouette. I find it fun for short periods, but I don’t have a particularly obsessive gaming personality. Some people play this for hours! -Erin

This short, but fun game is great for puzzle lovers who are looking for something different.  The game is about censorship in its various forms–and it requires that you use your sleuthing skills to figure out the story behind the actions.

I got sucked into this point-and-click puzzle game so quickly.  Despite the childish drawings that made me initially doubt if this was for adults, this story-based game with two different characters has an engaging plot line and interesting puzzles.

I found the story very beautiful and funny.  I didn’t want to stop playing this one, so consider buying this prior to a long international flight if you’re into puzzle games.

A Tinder-like decision-making game, Reigns: Her Majesty puts in the place of the Queen in the center of an imaginary royal court, with many decisions to make.

Some are hilarious, like how to put up with your annoying husband, and others are about how to rule your kingdom. You have to walk the line between antagonizing your subjects too much and inspiring too much love –– either extreme will get you killed!

The writing here is witty, funny, and barbed, poking fun at the ways women are caught between impossible choices. It won a BAFTA award for best game, and I’m not surprised. This one can be played in short bursts or you can sink into an hour-long binge, it’s that good. – Erin

Old Man’s Journey is a thoughtful puzzle game where an old man looks back on his life and his memories. It’s subtle, beautifully drawn, and with dynamics that I haven’t seen in many games before this.  I found the whole experience very calming, even when I was frustrated with not getting to the next level.

Break your pixellated character out of prison! This game has won several awards, and for good reason. Incorporating an old-school gaming aesthetic with a bit of crafting and the occasional round of whacking people over the head with makeshift weapons, this game is more complicated than it first appears.

There are several ways to break out of any given prison level –– from causing full-scale riots to digging tunnels to making disguises. It’s compelling enough to entertain you during a long boring train ride, but quick enough to make a short wait entertaining. -Erin

Life Is Strange

Life is Strange is a choose-your-own adventure game that is closer to a movie that you get to direct yourself.  It’s emotionally gripping, cinematic, and with a poignant story.  It’s fairly long, so you’ll get a lot of use out of it for a low cost (think how much you’d pay for a movie).  My husband and I spent  days playing this game together.

Framed is an amazing concept of an app where you create and rearrange comic panels in an attempt to help your spy succeed.  The gameplay is a bit fast, but it’s a blast to play and you’ll lose track of time while playing Framed. 

The animation of Framed is hand drawn and the music just adds another piece.  I’d consider it the perfect travel game for a long wait at the airport–although you shouldn’t get too invested in it. 😉

Lumosity is an app featuring a variety of games that reportedly train your brain to become more agile in different ways. The free version of the app serves up three games from a collection each day for your brain workout. You can play each game as often as you want during the day. I love most of the games I have played so far, but my favorite by far is Train of Thought.

Train of Thought i s Lumosity’s most popular brain game. It has reportedly been played over half-a-billion times since it was launched in 2013. I am not surprised at all…Train of Thought is both addictive and aggravating like the best games always are!

So, how does it work? The game features a screen with a bunch of train stations in different colors, with tracks connecting each station to a starting point. When you are ready, trains are released onto the track from the start point one by one, and the goal is to throw switches correctly and in time for each train to head into its home station. 

It sounds simple…but it gets progressively more difficult with each level. On a recent ten-hour flight to Europe, I spent every waking minute playing it (and I barely slept!), but I still could not crack my current level of 11.  – Dhara

Who doesn’t enjoy a word game?! I love Wordescapes because it keeps my mind working especially when I’m on a long flight or connection and the internet is not available. Or simply when I’m working and need a break.

The app works this way, you have box tables like the ones in Scrabble, and you will get a set of letters where you need to create words that fit on the number of boxes. If you create a word that is not needed in the table box, it will go as a bonus word.

Every level have 16 set of games, once you finish every level you get free coins. Coins can be used as a “hint” when you are stuck. This app is completely free and the words will be in English. – Mary

This game is the millennial take on Breakout (Bueller?). This fun game with a sleek design is fun to better played offline as the ads are far less of a nuisance. That said, if you love to cheat, you can watch the ads for additional ways to break the lights. I’ve found it delightfully addictive and fun to play late at night due to the dark colors.

I need to add the honorable mention of Board Game Arena , which works only online. This free platform with premium options features 100+ favorite board games digitized. You need to be online and at the time of editing, the app is still in Beta mode (and is best on a tablet/laptop). Still, I absolutely loved playing King of Tokyo and Ticket to Ride against strangers on my last train ride.

Minesweeper

I recently found a new game that is totally addictive! It’s called MixedUp Max and is a magic squares type of game – you can select different pictures and different shuffle levels and then slide rows and columns to re-arrange back to the original picture! There’s a free version but I’m not a fan of ads so went for the paid for version, and best of all, it can be played without internet access so I’ve been using it on my plane and train trips!

Here are a few fun apps that will teach the whole family some great ways to stay interested in the world outside the windows while staving off boredom.

Road Trip Fun is less a game app and more a car-game discovery app, with almost 30 different games you and your family can use to while away the long hours of auto travel. Launching the app brings you to a list of roat-trip games like 20 Questions, Spelling Bee, Road Trip Math, A is for Armadillo, and our family’s all time favorite, I Spy.

The app itself isn’t much to look at, but it’s worth the $0.99 to have all of these in one place to help you remember ones you haven’t played since you were a kid yourself.

SlugBug Roadtrip brings the car game classic to the iOS generation. Launch this $1.99 app once downloaded and add player names and photos for up to four SlugBuggers. You can then set whether to have music and how long the game will last. You get different points for different Bugs found, one point for modern Bugs, two for classic Bugs, and 5 for a padiddle Bug (one that’s missing a headlight). This one’s great fun and easy on the eyes.

Finally, where would a good road-trip be without a license plate game? State Plate Bingo! is a great way to track all those license plates you find along the way. Launch the game, then tap on the state of the licence plates you see along the highways and byways of your automobile vacation. Tap on the My Plates button to see all the license plates you’ve collected. If more than one family member has a copy of the app, it’s time for some competition for the most states found in a day, or who can get to 10, 20, 50 states first. Great family fun, right in the car, yeah?

Use These Apps To Road-Trip With Even Less Planning

Planning, sheesh, who needs it? Maybe you’re young, fancy free, and willing to take a risk on things like hotels and fuel being available when you get there? Maybe you’re just taking a zen-like trip in your car, and planning really messes with your mojo. Either way, there are apps for that, as you’ll quickly see.

HotelsByMe is an app that will help you find that last minute place to lay your head when you roll into town much later than you anticipated, or when you just can’t drive much longer and need to find a place to park and sleep. HotelsByMe lets you view a list of hotels by location or landmarks, sort by price or star rating, and even filter by the type of amenities the hotels nearby are offering. There’s even a 24/7 call center for booking snafus and customer support should you get stuck. It’s a universal app for the very nice price of free, so you don’t have much to lose if it works. Another app that might help you with your plan-less travel is Cheap Gas! Heck, it’s an app that could probably help us all regardless of our organization or planning abilities. Cheap Gas! uses location data from your iPhone to help you find nearby gas stations, sorting by distance, or price. It uses the GasBuddy.com website to, ahem, fuel the data it returns to you, and allows you to add info on gas stations you visit that aren’t already there. Once it finds the data, it will help you get there with routing information as well. For a free app, it certainly sounds pretty nice. Via IntoMobile

I’m a big fan of just typing a place into the Maps app on my iPhone, like “coffee shop” and finding what’s nearby. However, that does take a certain amount of tapping and typing and such. Map Buddy helps you do the same thing, only with less time and effort, and that can’t be a bad thing. Downloading this app, currently on sale for $0.99, will let you find the nearest location using pre-defined lists in the app itself. You can, when you feel like doing a little pre-trip effort, customize the lists, add new ones, and even organize the locations into categories. Cool feature? It even works with an iPod touch if you’re in a metropolitan area with Wi-Fi in some areas of the US, Europe and Japan. Nice! Via Mashable

Road-Trip Off The Beaten Path

Road-trips are tons of fun, but it’s easy to forget that the journey itself is just as important as the destination. Sure, you may be driving across the country to head to a resort or amusement park, but there’s fun to be had along the way as well.

Here are three apps that will help you get off the highway and deeper into the joys of traveling the road this summer.

According to the iTunes app description, Roadside America will make sure you “never miss another giant twine ball, crazy museum or hilarious statue.” This is a neat looking app that will give you one of seven “oddity-rich” US or Canadian regions, with an option to unlock all regions available for in-app purchase. You can search by location, zip code, address, city, or attraction name, and then filter with over 70 categories, like Atomic, Music, Celebrities, and more. The app hooks into RoadsideAmerica.com and provides editorial commentary and ratings on the various oddball places along your route.

Rest Stops Plus seems like an ideal companion if you’re heading down the open road on the United States or Canadian highway system, at least. It has over 4,000 places in its database: turn outs, scenic vista stops, rest areas, etc. You can filter the list of available stops by amenities like picnic tables, accessible parking, restrooms, and even travel direction (only northbound stops, for example) to make sure you’re getting what you need.

Wouldn’t it be cool if you knew what was at the next exit off the highway? I always end up seeing the signs for places I want to stop AFTER I’ve wooshed by the actual exit for them. That problem is solved with iExit , an app that tells you what’s coming up at the next exit, in real time. It look spretty slick, and it’ll make sure you don’t miss things you want to see rather than having to settle for things you happen upon when you drop off the interstate.

Use These Map-Enabled Apps To Make Your Road-Trip Go Smoothly

Gone are the days of folding and unfolding huge maps that you get from the gas station or the Automobile Club, what with GPS, Maps apps, and the like. Using the built-in Maps app is a great way to get where you need to go, but what if you want to take your navigation to the next level? What if you need to make sure you don’t get a speeding ticket? What if you want to get your kids excited about the National Park you’re all going to see? Maps app won’t do any of that justice. Here are three apps that will, though.

Turn by turn navigation is really the best way to get around, especially when road-tripping through unfamiliar cities and towns. There are a ton of apps out there, but why spend all the cash on those when you only need it for one trip? AT&T’s own navigation app, AT&T Navigator , is a free download, and will simply add a $10 to your AT&T bill, saving the hassle of signing up for another service. When you’re not gadding about the country, you simply turn off the feature, and don’t have to pay another cent.

Speeding tickets are kind of a bummer. It’s hard not to speed, though, when you’re jamming along the highway, cranking the tunes, headed for who knows where far away from here. Luckily, Trapster is here to help you avoid those speed traps along the way. The app will alert you when there are road hazards ahead of you as well as letting you know when you are going too fast for the posted speed limit, using the accelerometer in your iPhone. There’s also live traffic reports from NAVTEQ, and some great crowd-sourced info from other Trapster users. It’s also free, so you don’t have anything to lose by checking it out.

Google Earth may seem like an odd addition to this list, but boy is it fantastic if you want to show your kids (or other passengers) where you are headed. Going to the Grand Canyon? Simply search for it and zoom into the beautiful satellite imagery provided by Google’s amazing app. You can have it label things for you, or turn them all off for an unfettered flyover of your destination. Slick, fun, free, and gorgeous on the new iPad.

Road-Trip With Your iPad, Too

We’ve spent a good deal of time on apps that will work on your iPhone, what with its built in cell-data capabilities, but wanted to find some great ones for you iPad-only owners as well. Yes, apps made for the iPhone or iPod touch can run in enlarged mode on the iPAd, but we’re kind of iPad snobs and really only want to run iPad apps natively. That’s why you’ll only find Universal or iPad-only apps in the next list for road-trips with your iPad.

The Weather Channel for iPad This one is for the iPad only, and contains all the weather info you might need for your road trip planning and while on the road. It’s gorgeous as well, and full of neat little touches for weather geeks, like an interactive world weather globe, radar weather maps that move, pollen information for the U.S., and some storm and breaking news footage. It’s really gorgeous on the new iPad as well.

Trip Time – Are We There Yet? Here’s the phrase that strikes terror into the hearts of parents everywhere: “Are we there, yet?” The lucky ones who have an iPad (or an iPhone, this one is Universal) can use this app to help the little terrorists their kids in the backseat to visualize where tehy are at in their trip, and how much longer it might take to get there. Simply start the app, set the destination, and the travel method, and Trip Time will display the distance and duration left in your trip. Sweet mercy!

Goby Ever get to where you’re going, then realize you have no idea what to do there? No clue where to go eat, what to check out in your free time, where the best selection of beers on tap is? Well, universal app Goby has you covered. Download it, connect to your Facebook account,a nd it will immediately start showing you things to do in your local area based on your Facebook preferences. The Roadside America app helps you find the most unique attractions worth stopping for, like the large sculpture of a cartoon mouse holding a cheese platter in Plain, Wisconsin — where else? — or the decidedly odd larger-than-life-sized three-way electrical plug that rests on a lawn in Philadelphia. The app features museums, murals, tours, quirky restaurants, and photo ops.

Roadside America costs $3 to download, which gets you access to one region in the app. You can purchase more regions for $2 or get access to all of the U.S. and Canada for an extra $7. The app is available only on iOS .

iExit Interstate Exit Guide

Knowing where to stop for road trip snacks, a drive-through latte, or a public restroom can be challenging with all the exit signs whizzing by at 70 mph, but iExit Interstate Exit Guide takes the guesswork out of it. The app will list which exits are coming up on your route, what's there, and what they offer — including food, lodging, fuel, and even hospitals. It pulls fuel prices from OPIS (the Oil Price Information Service) and displays Yelp reviews for businesses.

HotelTonight

Even if you've planned out all your stops ahead of time, you might find that you need to pull over for a night unexpectedly. Driving is tiring, and unplanned naps can be life-saving. HotelTonight can help you find accommodations in a pinch. The app offers day-of deals on unsold rooms, and the user-friendly interface means you can book a discounted room in minutes. There are well over 1,000 properties to choose from in cities all over the world, from Mexico City to Jakarta (in case you happen to take your road-tripping global).

If staying in a tucked-away A-frame cabin, a yurt, or a private guest house in someone's garden is more your travel style than bouncing between hotels, then Airbnb is the ticket. On the Airbnb app, you can search properties (millions in the U.S. alone) on a map and read reviews before you book, which you can do in advance or at the last minute.

The app features not just vacation homes but also activities, so if you're keen to experience a city like a local you can do so via a pottery class or a guided walking tour, for example.

On The Dyrt, you get real intel on campsites and a built-in community that makes camping on a road trip especially fun and safe. You can even book some of the campsites right on app.

The app is free, but there's a premium version for $36 a year that allows you to plan trips and search campsites while offline — convenient for remote regions.

What is a road trip without a perfect playlist? Whether you're keen to create a soundtrack of nostalgic singalongs, modern pop songs, or music inspired by your destination, you'll find even the most obscure tunes on Spotify , a catalog of more than 100 million tracks. When you tire of Taylor Swift, you can turn to podcasts or an audiobook to keep you company. Road trips are a great opportunity to delve into a docuseries like "Serial," an all-time favorite.

T hese days, the phrase “there’s an app for that” can easily be replaced with “there’s, like, 50 apps for that.” Now that warm weather is almost upon us, we’re helping you cut through some of the noise with the best, must-have road trip apps to help you eat, sleep, and sightsee your way across America . All we ask is that you let your co-pilot work them while en route. Otherwise, you’re gonna need a “Send an Ambulance” app.

Google Maps: Navigation

This one shouldn’t be a surprise, but we can’t round up the best road trip apps without including the world’s best navigation app. Even if this is your very first road trip, Google Maps is probably already on your phone. You can plan your route ahead of time and easily share it with friends and family.

The app will highlight traffic along your route and offer detour suggestions in real time, whenever possible. A soothing A.I. voice will shout at you like a perpetually disappointed mother to “key pleft” so you don’t miss a single turn. Plus, in a pinch, you can search for the nearest gas station (with current prices), food stop, hotel, or t-shirt hut.

Waze: Traffic info

A well-equipped shotgun navigator should be equipped with both Google Maps and Waze. While Google Maps provides a snapshot of upcoming traffic, it just doesn’t give you the same highway play-by-play that Waze does. It isn’t nearly as playful as Waze, either.

Waze lets users tag locations along their route to notify fellow drivers of anything from potholes to speed traps to stopped vehicles and debris. If there’s an accident or construction up ahead, good Samaritans might even save you a headache by letting you know which lanes are closed. It also displays the current speed limit so you can avoid speeding in areas you’re not familiar with.

GasBuddy: Gas

One of the biggest road trip expenses is fuel. You can’t get where you’re going without it, but prices can be frustratingly inconsistent. GasBuddy finds the cheapest gas stations along your route, helping you save cash every time you fill up. Google Maps does this, too, but we think GasBuddy does it better, plus the app even offers exclusive discounts of up to $0.25 per gallon.

That alone is pretty dang handy, but it gets even better: By reporting gas prices for the stations you stop at, you help others save big time and rack up points that can save you even more. You can also link the app with your checking account and GasBuddy will help you recoup some costs by giving you cashback on your fuel purchases.

Plugshare: Electric car charging

If you’re road-tripping in a Tesla or other electric vehicle, you’ll need a way to find charging stations along the way. Plugshare is a community-driven app with details on every available electric charging station along your route. Search for stations based on the type of vehicle you’re driving, where you’re headed, and what sort of amenities are nearby. Users can upload photos, leave reviews, and share helpful info like how many chargers a location has available.

HotelTonight: Lodging

What we love most about Honk is the lack of surprises when it comes to cost. If you’re stranded with car trouble in the middle of nowhere, the last thing you want to hear is that the tow you called is going to cost twice as much as you expected.

The other passengers must then try and guess the answer (clues can be given if it's really hard), with the winner taking the next turn. This is an easy car game to play with kids and always a great one to keep bored passengers entertained for a surprisingly long time.

7. 20 Questions

This classic road trip game probably doesn't need much of an introduction - simply choose one passenger to start by thinking of a random object, and the other passengers take turns asking 20 yes-or-no questions to guess the object.

Whoever finds the answer first gets to think of the random thing in the next round, but if the object has everyone stumped, they get to keep their role for the next round.

There are no rules on the object you can pick, but lying in your answers is strictly forbidden!

8. Car Bingo

This kid-friendly game takes a little prep before you set off, but it's well worth it if you need to keep the kids entertained on a long journey.

Make a list of things the children might see along the road trip route - e.g. cows, a tractor, a red car etc, to give to them when you get into the car.

As you drive they can cross things off as they see them, not only distracting them from boredom but also encouraging them to look around and learn about the places they're visiting.

Make the list as specific to the place you're going as you want. In Texas you might have anything mentioning the Lone Star and in Wyoming you might be on the lookout for elk!

You can tailor the difficulty and number of things to find depending on the age of your children.

9. Sweet Or Sour

The rules of this road trip game are super simple: passengers take turns waving at passing pedestrians or people in nearby cars. If they wave back they're sweet, if not they're sour. You win a point for every sweet passerby you get, so aim to find as many friendly people as possible along the way.

For obvious reasons, the driver should opt out of this one, but it can be extra fun if they divert the car through a busy area of town to rack up some extra waving opportunities!

Remember not to distract other drivers!

10. Secret Place Race

Make use of that old road map that sits in the car seat pocket to entertain the kids. All you need to do for the secret place race is pick a place they're unlikely to know such as a tiny village, river, or mountain, and see how long it takes them to find it on the map.

This can be incredibly entertaining in a Where's Waldo kind of way, except their mission in finding the village can be made critically important for the driver to be able to find the right way!

Have a reward on hand if they're able to find it in less than 5 minutes, and watch as they're completely engrossed in the task. A simple yet satisfyingly effective game.

11. Punch Buggy

First gaining popularity as part of one of Volkswagen's marketing campaigns in the 1960s, the aim of this game is to give your fellow passengers a playful punch whenever you see a VW Beetle drive past.

This is one of those road trip games that is universally loved by children (as long as you monitor the punching to avoid disaster), although we don't see why the adults wouldn't enjoy it too.

Granted - in some parts of the world, seeing a Beetle is incredibly rare, so if you're struggling to see many Beetles, you could always choose a specific color of car or another funny model as the target instead to make it a touch easier.

12. Regional Car Pantry

One for the foodies. Stretching across the full duration of your road trip, collect as many local snacks as you can at every stop along the way to build up your car pantry.

Make sure you take pictures of each snack (or buy duplicates if they'll keep) so you can see what you've managed to collect at the end of the trip, and be sure to take some weird and wonderful treats home for friends and family to try.

Do some research beforehand and make a list of all the foods you want to find, or just wing it and see what local delicacies you stumble across as you go.

13. The License Plate Game

You'll need pens and paper for this game so make sure you've packed some before you head off. The aim is to spot license plates from as many different countries or US states (depending on where your road trip is taking place) as possible.

Write a list of the places you've seen and compare it with the other passengers at the end of the drive. This is the ideal game for those long stretches of boring motorway where you'll probably rack up a surprisingly long list, and the person with the most countries gets to ride shotgun for the next leg of the journey.

The end of this road trip game can get very controversial - if you spot a real game winner, photographic evidence is a good idea so get your phone out and take photos in secret!

14. The Fortunately - Unfortunately road trip game

This is similar to the Story Game (see #1 above), however players get a little more control and creativity. You can say more than one word this time!

One player starts off with a 'fortunately' sentence, and the next has to follow with an 'unfortunately' sentence to build a story of luck and misfortune. For example, one player might start with 'fortunately, the sun was shining' with the second player adding 'unfortunately they had a long drive ahead of them' and so on.

This game can make it a little easier to remember the long string as everything has to be either fortunate or unfortunate! Get as creative as you can and you'll find yourself at your destination in what seems like no time at all.

15. The Complete Food Menu Game

This is the perfect road trip game to play if you're passing through a few towns on your way although roadside restaurants and chains will do just fine.

Print out a sheet with all the food types you can think of in a grid against the names of people in the car.

Every time you drive past a restaurant of some kind, the first person to spot it gets to collect the tick for the food type it serves. Steaks and pizzas should be easy to collect by everyone, but you might just win if you're the only one who spotted the seafood restaurant in the middle of Oklahoma!

16. The Name Game

This is another simple game that keeps your brain occupied during a long drive without being too strenuous. One person simply says any name they can think of and the next person must say another name that begins with the last letter of the name before, and so on.

For example if passenger one says Tom, passenger two might say Mary. If you've made any friends during your road trip, try and include their names to make it a tad more topical.

Obviously adding the rule of not repeating the same names once they have been mentioned makes this a whole lot more interesting as the game progresses although you're guaranteed to have a disagreement over whether a name has or has not been mentioned already!

17. Guess The Song

If you're comfortable in your musical knowledge you'll definitely want to suggest playing this one. The rules are simple: get the front passenger to play the first few seconds of a song and whoever can guess the artist and song title the quickest wins a point.

This is much easier if you can connect your phone to the car for the road trip and play songs from there so you can easily search and pause the music.

The person with the most points after half an hour gets control of the music for the rest of the journey, so there's a lot at stake...

18. Sing The Next Line

A variation on the Guess The Song game above, except this game relies on your vocal chords.

Instead of just guessing the song after a few seconds, players have to rack their brains and try and sing the next line, and the person who successfully remembers it first wins a point. Think of a reward for whoever wins, and if you attempt it but get it wrong you have to do a forfeit chosen by the driver.

19. Radio Roulette

This game's a little less hands-on but no less entertaining. Use your road trip driving time to discover all the local radio stations of the place you're visiting by re-tuning every ten minutes and choosing a new station at random.

You'll probably find some pretty wacky programs and get to know traditional and popular music in that country - a great way to appreciate culture even when you're between destinations.

20. Would You Rather

This road trip game can be be as PG or as outrageous as you like depending on the age of the passengers.

Take turns asking the car whether they would rather do one thing or another (e.g. 'would you rather go to France or Spain?') and see what they answer. Make it as difficult as possible to choose between the two options for maximum entertainment value, whether that's making them equally amazing or equally horrible, it's up to you…

You can see how this game can get as interesting in group of adults as with kids - answering the question is compulsory and providing reasons is where it gets fun!

21. Car Rules Road Trip Game

Everyone in the car gets to make up a silly rule, e.g. whenever we cross a bridge everyone has has to touch their nose, or whenever we stop at a red light everyone has to touch the roof of the car.

The last person to join in when an action is enforced gains a point, and the person with the most points at the end of the drive loses. Get as creative as you like with the rules and try and catch people out where possible so you can take the victory.

The loser has to go pay for parking or buy ice creams at the next stop!

22. Hot Seat

If you're that nosy friend that wants to find out all of your companions' deepest secrets then you'll like this one. Passengers take it in turns to be in the hot seat and are asked 5 questions, one of which they're allowed to veto and the other four must be answered honestly.

This is best played in an adult-only car (questions get notoriously cheeky) and is the ideal way to pass the time finding out some interesting new facts about your road trip friends.

You can use it as a warm up or a step up from the car version of Truth or Dare (see #27 below) depending on how close your friendships are!

23. People Watching

Someone picks a car full of people that everyone can see (this works best if you're stuck in traffic), and together you make up a story about the people - who they are, where they're going, what they do for a living. The funnier and more far-fetched the story, the better - just make sure you're not staring too obviously at your subjects or it might get a little awkward...

Use your imagination to make the stories controversial and see how far you can go with making things up!

You might just surprise yourself how the most innocuous of road trip games will make you spot things you would never otherwise see just by looking at the cars around you.

24. Kiss, Marry, Avoid

Another one for the older crowd. Take turns listing three famous people and the other passengers in the car have to choose which person they would kiss, which they would marry, and which they would avoid.

Make it really hard to decide so that everyone has a bit of a laugh, and try to predict each other's answers to add an extra twist to the game.

If you want to add a little spice to the game, use people you all know or move to people in the car!

25. While You Were Sleeping

There's nothing more tempting than pulling a prank on a passenger who falls asleep en route, and whilst we don't dispute the whole drawing-a-mustache classic, we've got something even craftier.

Whilst they're taking a nap on the road trip, have a brainstorm with the awake members of the party and come up with an epic story or scenario of something that they missed during their nap.

The aim of the game is to get them to believe the story, so make sure nobody laughs or breaks character (come up with a forfeit if they do), and keep the lie going for as long as possible. If you manage to pull it off this is far better than a DIY mustache... but by all means, draw one on for good measure.

This classic road trip game can really take a turn for the worse if you want it to. A simple horror story about a truck that followed the car for miles that you just managed to pull away from before getting a flat tyre can go a long way as you're parked on the side of the road. Peer into the rear view mirror in horror and watch their face when a random truck appears on the horizon!

26. Categories

Popular with kids and adults alike the world over, Categories can be an awesome game to play on road trips as well.

The premise is simple - somebody picks a category which can have multiple different answers. Fruit or Beatles' songs can both be great options.

Players have to then take turns to name one item from the category at a time. Players are eliminated when they can't name one until there's one winner. Either the winner or the next person in turn gets to choose the next category.

27. Truth Or Dare (The Car Edition)

The old classic can and should be played on road trips! Players take turns to either answer an embarassing question truthfully or perform a dare set by other players.

The dares obviously have to be contained to the realms of the car or the roadside so you'll have to get creative.

Needless to say, this game is very different when played with kids as a family or with adult friends and is equally great in both cases!

28. 6 Degrees of Separation

This is a road trip game that will require some imagination and provide plenty of topics for conversation.

Take turns and pick two people who you may know or make them up (e.g. a Shaolin monk). The more different the background and location of these people the better!

Then proceed to discuss how these two people are connected through 6 connections or less. You don't have to know the whole chain - that's actually where the fun is.

How is a gaucho from a remote farm in southern Argentina connected to Prince Charles? The gaucho must know his ranch's boss (1). The boss knows the boss of the company that buys beef from local producers (2). That company has a liaison manager in a UK-based Argentinian beef importing firm (3). This manager has a colleague who imports fine wines from around the world for the same company (4). The colleague personally provides the fine wines to the Royal sommelier (5) and the sommelier personally knows Prince Charles (6). Bingo!

29. The Stop Joker Card road trip game

If you're going on a long trip and you're going to be driving all day or even longer than that, this is a great way to give everyone in the car, kids included, a way to have a bit of control.

At any point during the trip, each person can enact their Stop Joker Card - this means the car has to stop wherever they are passing and spend some time there doing an activity or just relaxing.

Your kids might see something really fun halfway along and use their card to break up the journey and everyone gets to have their stop along the route!

30. Pick One Car road trip game

This one is a game of patience and opportunity. Every person in the car has one chance during the journey to pick a car that you can see on your way as their ultimate One Car. The objective is to pick the coolest/fastest/most amazing car possible.

Once you've chosen a car, you can't change it - you only have one go so you better make it count - if you're passing something that is decent but not stellar, you might have to make a tough choice.

The game is made even more difficult by the fact that the first person to call the car out gets to have it so you have to be alert and on the lookout if you haven't got one yet.

• Once the car has come up with an action, the player must try to guess that action by asking questions. In the questions, “smurf” is the stand-in for the action.
• Ex. When is the best time to smurf? Does smurfing make you sweat? Do you smurf inside or outside?
• The player must guess the action in as few questions as possible

Fortunately, Unfortunately

This fun game requires a bit of imagination, so it’s perfect for playing with the kids. It’s an easy game to keep going for hours, and the more crazy and imaginative you are, the more fun it is to play.

• First, appoint someone in the car as the judge
• The judge picks a music category i.e., pop, hip hop, rock, etc.
• The remaining people in the car take turns playing the “best” song from that category
• The judge awards a point to whichever person plays the best song

Did You Know?

A favorite road trip trivia game for couples and friends, this one is a great way to get to know the people you’re with even better than you do now.

To play the game, each person in the car takes turns sharing an interesting (and unknown) fact about themselves. Each player must begin by saying, “Did you know that I…” and then adding a fun factoid the others in the car don’t know about them

The Rhyming Game

Are you a wordsmith? The Rhyming Game is your time to shine! All you’ll need to do is start with a word, and then everyone must come up with a rhyming word before time expires.

• The first player begins by choosing any word they like
• The next player must say a word that rhymes with the first word
• Each additional player must do the same
• Players have fifteen seconds to come up with a rhyming word, or they’re eliminated

The Spelling Bee

Are you the best speller in the car? Test your knowledge against your friends and family with a spelling bee game. Use Google to find a list of difficult to spell words, and host a spelling bee in the car!

• One person in the car must be appointed The Word Master
• The Word Master selects a word for the first player to spell
• If the player spells their word correctly, the Word Master selects a word for the next player
• The game continues until there is only one super speller left

Backward Sentences Game

It may seem easy, but this game is harder than you may think! Can you say a sentence backward?

• The first player says a sentence
• The next player must repeat the sentence backward
• Each player gets the point for every correct backward sentence
• The player with the most points after five minutes wins the game

• The remaining players take turns guessing which movie the first player was talking about

The Going on Vacation Game

How good is your memory? This game is a great way to see which member of your party is the best at remembering fine details, and it’s lots of fun to play. Each player adds a new item to the list when it’s their turn, and it’s up to the next player to remember everything on the list, in order.

• The first player starts by saying “I’m going on vacation and I’m bringing…” and adds an item
• I.E., I’m going on vacation, and I’m bringing a T-shirt
• The next player must repeat the sentence, the first item, and then add an additional item
• The game continues until a player can’t remember all of the other items on the list

This classic game is fun for the whole family, and it’s one that practically everyone already knows how to play.

• The first player selects an object from the car or countryside
• The player then says “I spy with my eye something beginning with the letter [first letter of object]
• The other players take turns guessing what the item is
• Each correct guess earns a point
• The player with the most points at the end of the game wins

Silence is golden, and that’s especially true for parents who are trying to find some peace from their kids during a road trip. This game couldn’t be any easier to play. The object is to remain quiet for as long as possible. Whoever goes the longest without making a sound wins!

What Are You Waiting For?

I’m grateful for this list of the best apps for road trips with kids, because it turns out, I’m not allowed to put my kids in a hilarious sidecar by themselves during long drives. So I’ve been prepping my phone and the kids’ iPad for the long interstate hours ahead, in hope that there will be less screaming-out-of-boredom, and fewer gross public bathroom stops.

(Yes, these apps can help with that too!)

So download these, our picks for the best apps for road trips for the kids, whether you’re in need of entertainment, food, gas, restroom breaks — and did I mention entertainment? Because this mama has played all the I Spy she can for one lifetime.

The best apps for road trips with kids

Google Maps app  to get you where you’re going

Of course I couldn’t leave this OG driving app off my list of the best apps for road trips with the kids. Thanks to plentiful updates over the years, I still rarely use anything else besides the Google Maps app to navigate. I love the intuitive design, the warnings when a turn is approaching, and the feature that allows you to search for gas stations and restaurants to add easily to your drive — without exiting the navigation screen.

Waze app  for up-to-the-second roadside alerts

Yes, two map apps!

While I usually rely on Google Maps for driving, I still pull out Waze when a traffic jam arises.  Waze crowdsources traffic data in real-time, and it’s scrappier and more creative than Google Maps at coming up with workarounds for accidents and letting you know about them nearly immediately.

Plus, I still like that Waze warns you about speed traps, hidden police cars, and stalled-out cars and other hazards on the side of the road, making it an essential road trip app for lots of us.

Apple Maps app … especially for Apple Watch

Shall we go for three map apps? Apple Maps has made some outstanding updates in recent years, and a lot of people prefer it for an interface that’s large, and easy to read without taking your eyes off the road. Speaking of which, the connectivity with your Apple Watch is a fabulous benefit — getting that haptic vibration when it’s time to get off the exit or make a sharp left, is incredibly helpful. Especially if you’e got a noisy crowd in the back seat.

Note that you can even use the “Listen for Directions” mode to combine tones and haptic feedback. And it’s kind of nice just to occasionally say “Hey Siri, how long will it take me to get home?”

The GasBuddy app  for saving you bucks when you fill up

Especially these days, we love the GasBuddy app which lets you track the least expensive gas station en route — and yes, it really works! I like that it can also help me figure out exactly at what point I’ll need a refill, so I can try to plan around my kids’ nap and snack schedules. Can’t make a list of the best road trip apps — for families or not — without this money-saving option.

Roadtrippers app  for leg-stretching breaks

The Roadtrippers app can not only help you navigate to your destination, it can help you find colorful roadside attractions along the way. Like, I hadn’t ever realized how close we were coming to Graceland on our yearly pilgrimage to see my grandmother in Mississippi before I started using the app — which, hey, why not?

It also shows you all the nature walks and hikes along a route, so that you can let kids get their wiggles out on a longer journey.

The Flush app  for finding the nearest restroom

No, it’s not the sexiest road trip app you’ll download this holiday, but Flush comes in handy right when you need it so of course it’s on our list of the best roadtrip apps.  It displays available nearby bathrooms so you’re never left to the elements so to speak. Bonus:  each one is conveniently tagged with whether or not they’re disability-friendly.

iExit app  for a little bit of everything pitstop-related

If you want to save storage space on your phone, grab a great multitasker app like iExit . This app is a real-time, go-to list of the nearest restaurants, rest stops, hotels and more on every upcoming exit on your route. While not as specific as Gas Buddy, Flush, and Roadtripper, it’s got enough info help you find the basics without having to download three new apps.

Netflix app  for backseat entertainment

Maybe this seems like a “duh,” inclusion as one of the best roadtrip apps, but I appreciate how  Netflix makes it so easy to download favorite episodes through the Netflix app before you start driving, so you don’t have to panic if you lose WiFi. I also like that Netflix has become less strict over the years about which shows and movies can be downloaded for offline viewing, so that we can all pick our favorites.

Besides, it doesn’t just have to be a movie “for the kids” — there’s probably something there you wouldn’t mind listening to from the front seat.

Audible app for family story time

If you’d rather listen to something with the kids, instead of handing over the video apps, you can’t go wrong with any of these 5 audiobook apps  that we’ve recommended in the past. Audible of course is the biggest and most used, but also check out Libro.fm which supports indie bookstores with your audiobook purchase; and Hoopla, which lets you borrow the books from your library. Pinna app  for kid-friendly podcasts

We’ve been fans of this just-for-kids podcasts app for years, and their content keeps getting better and better, if you ask me. The app mainly features podcasts, but they’ve expanded to audiobooks recently, and you can search either by age and interest. It’s subscription-based, which is a drawback since there are so many free kids’ podcasts in the world, but for me, it’s worth it to have a bunch of well-vetted, family-friendly podcasts all in one place.

Amazon Alexa  for road trip games with the kids

Car fax app …just in case.

While I sincerely hope you don’t break down on your next road trip (or ever), I know it  happens. And I’ve been there! Which is why I recommend having a car maintenance and repair app like Carfax on your phone. It keeps track of when you had your last oil change, when you need to update your registration, and where you can find local repair shops if you’re a long way from home when the alternator (that’s a thing, right?) dies.

Insider: Five meaningful developments in the Pacers' 3-2 road trip

CHICAGO -- The Pacers followed one of their finest offensive performances of the season with one of their worst on Wednesday night, ending their five-game road trip with a 125-99 loss to the Bulls.

It was an unfortunately predictable backslide for the Pacers who have struggled all season to turn impressive wins into sustained momentum. They have had just one winning streak longer than three games all season -- a six-game stretch from Dec. 26 through Jan. 3 -- and they haven't even strung three together since the Feb. 14-Feb. 25 stretch that jumped over the All-Star break.

It was the first time all season the Pacers, with the highest-scoring offense in the NBA, failed to score 100 points but the offense didn't bother Pacers coach Rick Carlisle nearly as much as the overall inconsistency of effort and defensive mistakes against a Bulls team battling to hold on to a spot in the play-in round of the postseason.

"They were playing hard," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "I don't care about 100 points. What matters is our spirit and just learning how you have to compete against these teams that are desperate.”

That being said, the late-season road trip clearly qualifies as a success for a young Pacers team. The Pacers came out of it 3-2 with two impressive wins over the Warriors and Clippers in California. They won Game No. 41 to assure they will finish no worse than .500 and clinched a top-10 finish in the Eastern Conference, which means at the very least a berth in the play-in round.

Here are five things that mattered during the Pacers' five-game road trip.

They got and held the No. 6 spot in the East

When the Pacers lost to Cleveland on March 18, they fell to 38-31 and tumbled into the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference. That of course would mean a spot in the play-in round, something the Pacers would like to avoid after having not reached a seven-game playoff series since the COVID bubble playoffs in 2020.

At the time, the Pacers held just a 1/2 game lead on Miami for seventh place and the ninth-place Bulls were even starting to nip at their heels, sitting just four games back of Indiana. Though finishing in the top eight doesn't guarantee a playoff spot like it used to, it's still important to hold on to because teams in the top eight have to win just one of two play-in games to move to the best-of-seven round. Teams seeded 9th and 10th have to take two win-or-go-home games. If the Pacers had a disastrous road trip, the Bulls could have jumped them and put Indiana's season in real peril.

The Pacers started the trip with a win at Detroit, however, and that combined with a loss by Philadelphia put them back in sixth by the end of March 20. They haven't fallen out of sixth place since and they still hold a one-game lead on seventh-place Miami and a 1 1/2 game lead on eighth-place Philadelphia with the road trip now over. They're also up 5 1/2 games on the Bulls now with just eight games remaining on their schedule and nine left on Chicago's. The Bulls won the season series 3-1 so they have the tiebreaker but Indiana's cushion is a helpful one.

Tyrese Haliburton -- for the most part -- found his shot

Carlisle would very much like the shooting and even the scoring of his All-Star point guard -- who has signed a max contract extension set to take effect in July -- to be less of a point of discussion.

"I'm not worried about Ty's scoring," Carlisle said after Monday's win over the Clippers. "People gotta quit talking about that. The guy's a great point guard. Maybe the best point guard in the world. So the important thing is that he's doing the things that are necessary to help our team win. ... We've got to get off the whole narrative that any of this is about Ty scoring. It's about our team."

On one hand, that's certainly fair because Haliburton's game has a lot more to it than 3-point shots. He still leads the NBA in assists with 11.0 per game and even though he's struggled since the All-Star break, his 9.6 assists per game are the third-highest figure in the league in that stretch. He's still averaging 16.5 points per game since the break, he's made 59.8% of his 2-point field goals, and he actually leads the Pacers with 1.5 steals per game since the break.

But on the other hand, Haliburton attempts 7.7 3-point shots per game, which is 3.0 more than anyone else currently on the roster. The trade of Buddy Hield, who was averaging 6.9 attempts per game and the season-ending shoulder injury suffered by Bennedict Mathurin, who averaged 5.6 per game in seven appearances after the All-Star break, left the Pacers without their other two most willing 3-point shooters. Three-point shooting matters to the Pacers' ability to play uptempo, so it's a significant problem when a team's most frequent 3-point shooter makes just 20 of his first 94 attempts after the All-Star break.

And therefore it's a significant development that during this five-game road trip, Haliburton seemed to have at least broken out of the will-one-ever-go-in stage of his slump. He made just 3 of 11 3-pointers on Wednesday, but that followed a 6 of 9 performance against the Clippers on Monday in which he made five straight to open the game. He was 16 of 37 from 3-point range over the five-game trip, a 43.2% clip that is twice as good as the 21.3% post-All-Star break mark he started the road trip with.

The Pacers took another step with Pascal Siakam

Pascal Siakam's only criticism of his new teammates to this point is that he's not sure they realize what he's truly capable of, and just how frequently he can be counted on to make something happen if they throw him the ball within a few feet of the rim and give him a chance to work.

"It's not just about scoring," Siakam said after the Pacers' loss to the Lakers on Sunday. "I can play-make. I can do a lot of things. I just want us to continue in the natural flow of the game but also understand what I'm able to do out there."

In the first four games of the road trip at least, the Pacers maximized Siakam's contributions at a level beyond what they had all season. He scored 25 points against Detroit, 25 more against Golden State, 36 against the Lakers and 31 against the Clippers. The Bulls walled off the paint and made his life hard as he made just 2 of 7 field goals, but he still got to the line enough to post 14 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists.

During the five-game road trip, Siakam was by far the team's leading scorer with 26.2 points per game as well as is leading rebounder with 9.6 per game. His 3.8 assists per game put him behind only Haliburton and backup point guard T.J. McConnell. He shot 58.0% from the field on a team-high 17.6 field goal attempts per game and he shot 45.5% from 3-point range. Free throw shooting continues to be an issue for him as he made a shaky 64.9% of his attempts there, but he had twice as many attempts as any other Pacers player with 7.4 per game and twice as many makes. There are ways that the Pacers might be able to better maximize Siakam's talents, but at this point he's fully integrated into what they're doing, and getting him the ball has become an obvious priority.

Myles Turner and T.J. McConnell played like leaders

Myles Turner and T.J. McConnell are the only Pacers currently on the roster who were also a part of the last Indiana team to reach the playoffs. Their birthdays, just one day apart, occurred during the road trip and Turner turned 28 the day before McConnell turned 32. After the Pacers' win over the Warriors on Friday night when Turner broke Jermaine O'Neal's franchise career blocks record, it was McConnell who presented him with a plate of cookies and a bottle of whiskey in celebration.

So it's fitting that with the season hitting its home stretch, the Pacers veteran leaders have taken their level of play up a notch. Turner has been more aggressive in looking for opportunities to block shots and knock down 3-pointers and McConnell has relentlessly pushed the pace, attacked the paint, and looked for ways to turn defense into offense.

Over the five-game trip, Turner averaged 15.2 points per game, the third highest figure after Siakam and Haliburton, making 46.4% of his field goals 12 of 26 3-pointers (46.2%). He blocked 11 shots (2.2 per game) and also grabbed 6.2 rebounds per game.

McConnell, meanwhile, has scored in double figures in eight straight games coming off the bench. His 13.9 points per game in that period put him fourth on the team, even though he's averaging just 19.8 minutes per game in that period. For the road trip alone, he averaged 13.6 points and 5.8 assists per game while shooting 53.4% per game. He's made sure the Pacers aren't much less difficult to deal with when Haliburton comes off the floor and has worked well with him when they've played together.

Doug McDermott and Jarace Walker earned trust

In a sense, 32-year-old wing Doug McDermott and 20-year-old forward Jarace Walker are now in a battle to be the Pacers' second-unit small forward, which is essentially the last spot in Indiana's 10-man rotation. However, Carlisle can structure his substitution patterns to shrink the rotation to nine men or fewer. He can also play both men if he believes the situation calls for it, and their skill sets are different enough that they each fit best in different scenarios.

So more than competing against each other, McDermott and Walker are trying to prove they can do what they do well enough to bring something important to the Pacers in their stretch run.

McDermott, a career 41% 3-point shooter, was acquired in the three-way trade for Hield on Feb. 8, but made just 7 of 24 field goals and 4 of 20 3-pointers in his first six games, scoring just 19 points before a calf strain kept him out the next 10 games. He returned at the start of this trip against Detroit, however, scoring nine points that night and then 14 in the loss to the Lakers. In five games on the trip, he scored 26 points, hitting 10 of 20 field goals and 6 of 16 3-pointers. Those aren't huge numbers, but with Hield gone and Mathurin out, the Pacers don't have an established second-unit wing shooter and the Pacers could use someone to create some needed gravity for that group.

Walker appeared in just three of the five games, but his performance against the Clippers was critical. He posted eight points, seven assists and four rebounds, but most importantly he played steady defense against the Clippers' Paul George, Kawhi Leonard and others. That's what he was drafted to bring the Pacers in the first place, but he did have to break some bad habits of gambling and reaching for steals that aren't there and he appears to have done that.

Thunder Game Day: OKC Begins Tough East Coast Road Trip in New York

The Thunder match up with the Knicks to start a five-game slate against Eastern Conference teams.

The Thunder head to the northeast for one of their toughest road trips this season.

Oklahoma City will start its five-game slate away from home with a matchup against the New York Knicks. One of the league’s grittiest teams, the Knicks will present the Thunder with a number of challenges.

New York, led by first-time All-Star Jalen Brunson, will look to win the star matchup, which could be easier if Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remains out. Still, coming off vastly different performances, the teams will both be looking for an important win.

ODDS: 

The Thunder enter the day as 3.5-point underdogs to the Knicks, and the total over/under is 215.5 points.

KEYS TO THE GAME: 

After his 61-point game in San Antonio, slowing Brunson will be one of the Thunder’s top priorities. At 6-foot-2, Brunson will see various Thunder defenders, including defensive stars Lu Dort and Cason Wallace.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s potential absence could force some players into more minutes, but Oklahoma City’s depth could give Mark Daigneault’s team an advantage. Although New York’s loss in San Antonio came in overtime, Tom Thibodeau played four starters more than 40 minutes. In comparison, no Oklahoma City player played more than 37 minutes in Wednesday’s overtime loss against the Houston Rockets.

Sunday’s game will also be a clash of styles. The Knicks have the league’s slowest pace, while the Thunder rank in the top 10. 

Josh Giddey will have a chance to continue his hot streak in what is seemingly his favorite road arena. In his first two games in Madison Square Garden, Giddey posted triple-doubles. With only one this season, he could have a solid opportunity for his second if Gilgeous-Alexander can’t go.

Fun Hidden Object Game

I am a Gamehouse Club subscriber. Love this hidden object game. The levels are challenging and you don’t have to worry about having to buy in app gems or coins to progress. Would love to see more games like this.

I like the game but there are some items that are hidden behind the list of items at the bottom and there doesn’t seem to be a way to remove it or move the screen around to get to it.

What a start: Yankees coming home off thrilling victory at Arizona and fantastic road trip

PHOENIX – Maybe their win on Wednesday wasn’t as perfect as the postcard day downtown, but the Yankees are headed home with a 6-1 record.

Concluding a season-opening road trip that began with a four-game sweep at Houston, the Yankees outlasted the Arizona Diamondbacks in 11 innings, 6-5, on Wednesday afternoon.

Under the open roof at Chase Field, Aaron Judge’s RBI double to right-center field padded the Yanks’ one-run lead in the 11th inning, the first of which came in on a balk by Scott McGough.

Once more, Yankees closer Clay Holmes ran into trouble, unable to hold a two-run lead in the 10th (which included an infield error) and needed Caleb Ferguson to bail him out in the 11th.

After Ferguson gave up a run with two out, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo sent up Gabriel Moreno as a pinch-hitter with runners at first and second.

Yanks manager Aaron Boone walked him intentionally, which sent up the reliever McGough with the bases loaded, and Ferguson struck him out looking to end it.

The D-backs had lost the use of the designated hitter, due to DH Ketel Marte having to replace an injured player defensively.

Alex Verdugo hits first home run with Yankees

At home in Arizona, Alex Verdugo enjoyed every moment of his first big Yankee moment.

Batting with the ghost runner at second base, Verdugo blasted a two-run homer on a first-pitch delivery from Diamondbacks closer Kevin Ginkel in the 10th inning.

After watching the ball soar out to right field, Verdugo calmly flipped the bat and then took something of a victory lap around the bases, concluding with a celebratory point toward the stands where a whole rooting section of friends and family members cheered.

Having already embraced the pinstriped life, the ex-Red Sox Verdugo can expect to enjoy a hearty reception at Friday’s home opener at Yankee Stadium.

Verdugo was 0-for-3 on Wednesday, and just 3-for-24 in the new season, when he destroyed Ginkel fastball – the Yankees’ first base hit since the fifth inning.

Aaron Judge blasts first homer of the season

Aaron Judge had provided the Yankees a 2-1 lead in the fourth off Arizona starter Merrill Kelly, with a two-run shot to right-center field, his first homer of the year.

Until then, the Yankees captain was just 3-for-25 with one extra-base hit, a double. He hadn’t homered in a big-league game since last Sept. 27, at Toronto.

Dealing with core soreness during spring training that required an MRI (the results were negative), Judge did not homer in 24 Grapefruit League at-bats.

Carlos Rodon gives Yankees a solid start

Yankees starter Carlos Rodon gave up two solo homers in 5.1 innings – the only damage against him, as Ian Hamilton pitched out of his sixth-inning jam.

Ketel Marte’s fifth-inning homer made it 2-2. Kelly lasted seven innings, yielding two runs.

Hamilton retired all 10 batters he faced, striking out four, as the right-hander continued his hot start with three scoreless appearances.

The Golden State Warriors ended their five-game road trip with a win over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. The victory gave the Warriors a 4-1 record in their five away games and helped them build a two-game cushion over the Houston Rockets, who are waiting to pounce on any mistakes Steve Kerr’s team makes.

During their five-game road swing, the Warriors faced the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets, and the Spurs. Their only loss came to the Western Conference-leading Timberwolves. Speaking to the media on Sunday, Curry praised his team’s recent run of good performances and noted how important they have been to the team’s chances of qualifying for the play-in tournament.

“We did what we had to do. The Minnesota game was a tough way to start this trip, what with the fourth quarter and I feel like we let one go,” Curry said. “But we responded well. The teams we played are the ones you have to win to keep yourself in the fight. We did that. No style points, really, for any of it. But you get out of here with four wins and keep the momentum rolling.”

Golden State has eight games remaining on its schedule. It is not guaranteed a spot in the play-in tournament. As such, it needs to continue amassing wins if it wants a chance to play in the postseason.

The Warriors will face the Rockets on Thursday in a game that could create additional breathing room. Nevertheless, Kerr will need his star players at their best if the Warriors are to navigate a tough stretch run and make it into and past the play-in tournament.

Detroit Red Wings may have fixed latest swoon. But time is running out on playoff push

TAMPA, Fla. — The Detroit Red Wings eye a home stand after a grueling trip ended with a celebration.

"It's going to be a happy flight, something we haven't had recently, which is awesome," David Perron said after netting the winning goal in the 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning . "I think everyone is firing on all cylinders in our team game right now, and we have to keep pushing."

Monday's outing at Amalie Arena gave the Wings (37-30-8) four points on the trip — enough to get them to 82 points, but still just on the outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. It was their first road victory since Feb. 25, and goaltender Alex Lyon's first victory since Feb. 27.

"For me, it was very satisfying," Lyon said. "It's been a while. It's just great. And I say that sarcastically. We're about getting there. We have to take it a day at a time and a game at a time.

"Our focus remains the same. We just have to go one day at a time. That was a big win for us, and we can enjoy that on the flight home, and then we have to get back after it."

The Wings are desperate to climb the standings after their disastrous March , when they banked just eight points in 14 games, undone by inexplicably bad starts and shoddy team performances. They've finally gotten that straightened out, but now they only have seven games left.

"We've been building our game and the games have been tight, the games have been really hard," Dylan Larkin said. "We got the bounces and were hungry around their net and got the big goal, and that's what we've been missing.

"As we've gone along on this road trip, we've gotten more comfortable in the moment and we really kind of settled in. We know what these games are going to be like and kind of calmed down a little bit and been able to make more plays and execute better.

"I think it's repeatable because we've been doing it. We've been playing hard."

The Wings next play Friday against the New York Rangers, which begins a home stand that continues Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres and then April 9 against the Washington Capitals. The Wings head on the road to play the Pittsburgh Penguins April 11 and the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 13, host the Montreal Canadiens April 15, and finish the regular season April 16 in Montreal.

'HE'S BEEN A BIG BOOST': Rookie Simon Edvinsson sticking with Red Wings

Last season, it took 92 points to make the playoffs in the East. There are 14 points available to the Wings, and they're showing resolve to do what they can to make it in.

"Our guys were battling," coach Derek Lalonde said. "This was an unbelievably difficult road trip. You're talking at Carolina, at Florida, at Tampa. We've pointed in three of our last four on the road. I'm just really proud of the group. A lot of adversity all year, a lot of ups and downs, and we've just kept in the fight, we've kept battling."

The Wings can't afford any letup. The Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers are neck-for-neck in positioning for the third spot in the Metropolitan Division and the second wild card spot, with the Wings, New York Islanders, and, still, the Penguins, all within a handful of points.

Lyon said that, "I actively try not to see what else is going on around the league. For me as a goalie, that's the best way. I want to continue to think about the right things and focus on the process."

It's all the Wings can do, really: Stay in the moment and keep playing to their strengths.

"It's so rewarding right now," Perron said. "Not only that we won, and we got a point last game, but it's the way we do it."
