How to Reach Vaishno Devi?

The distance between Katra to Vaishno Devi is approximately 14 kilometers. Katra to Bhawan (Vaishno Devi) is the route that devotees take to visit the holy shrine. Here are the different ways to reach Bhawan from Katra:

Katra to Vaishno Devi on Foot :

The most popular way to reach Bhawan is by trekking on foot from Katra. The trek is around 13.5 km long, and it takes around 4-6 hours to reach Bhawan, depending on your fitness level. The trek is well-marked and well-lit, and there are several facilities such as restrooms, eateries, and medical aid centers along the way.

Katra to Vaishno Devi by Ponies or Horses :

You can also hire a pony or a horse to reach Bhawan from Katra. The cost of hiring a pony or a horse depends on the season and the demand. The journey takes around 4-5 hours, and it is a popular option for those who are unable to trek on foot.

Katra to Vaishno Devi by Helicopter :

You can also take a helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat, which is located near Bhawan. The helicopter service is operated by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, and it takes around 8 minutes to reach Sanjichhat. From Sanjichhat, you can trek to Bhawan or take a pony or a horse.

Note that due to weather conditions and demand, the availability of the helicopter service may vary, and it is recommended to book your tickets in advance.

1. Darshani Darwaaza (Starting Point)

The point known as Darshani Deodhi or Darshani Darwaza, around 1 km away from the bus stand, serves as the entrance to the track. According to legend, it was at this spot where Mata Vaishno Devi appeared as a young girl and met Pandit Shridhar.

This location is also called Darshani Darwaza as it offers a complete view of the Trikuta mountain. The term “Darshan” means view, and therefore, symbolically, this marks the first view of the Yatra. The elevation of this spot is 2800 feet above sea level.

2. (i) Holy Track: Old Track (Main)

The track leading up to the Shrine was in poor condition prior to August 30th, 1986, when the management was taken over by the Board. It was filled with potholes, and loosely-laid stones, and had an uneven surface. However, after the Board took over, the entire track was reconstructed.

It was widened, paved with tiles, and made much smoother. In addition, the steep inclines were made more gentle in several places. For safety, many parapets were built, and railings were installed along the track. Furthermore, over 5 kilometers of the track have been covered with rain shelters to protect the pilgrims from unpredictable weather conditions.

Previously, there was a lack of illumination along the track leading to the Shrine. However, with the installation of more than 1200 High-Pressure Sodium Vapor Lamps, the entire path now glitters with light.

Additionally, to ensure that visiting devotees have access to potable water, 120 water points and about 20 water coolers have been installed along the route from Banganga to Bhawan. Before the management takeover, there were inadequate sanitary arrangements along the track.

However, now, approximately 600 modern flushing latrine seats have been provided along the track and at Bhawan.

2 (ii) Holy Track: New Track (Alternate)

To address the growing number of pilgrims and the inconvenience caused by the movement of ponies, a new track was constructed in the early 1990s. The sharp gradient at Hathimatha and the congested width of the old track necessitated this construction.

The new track, known as the alternate track, has a much more gradual gradient and was opened to the public in 1999. Unlike the old track, no ponies are permitted on the new track. This shorter and gentler track has received widespread appreciation from pilgrims.

The alternate track, which is 500 meters shorter than the old track, begins just below Adhkuwari near the Inderprastha viewpoint and ends just short of the Bhawan Complex.

The track is wider than the old one and easier to navigate due to its uniform climb and lower gradient. Along the way, there are two viewpoints, three refreshment units, drinking water points, and water coolers for the convenience of the pilgrims.

Additionally, several outlets serving tea, coffee, and soft drinks have been established, as well as a Dosa point at Himkoti Viewpoint. Toilet blocks have also been constructed to provide clean public utilities, and adequate shelter sheds are available.

To reduce pollution, a zero-emission battery vehicle runs along this track.

The Shrine provides a battery vehicle facility for infirm, sick, and handicapped devotees at Inderprasth (Adhkuwari) and Manokmana Bhawan. However, booking of the facility is subject to availability.

3. Ban Ganga

Beyond the Police Check Post and Yatra Parchi Check Post, pilgrims arrive at a small bridge that spans Banganga, a legendary river associated with the miracles and legends of Mata.

The river flows throughout the year, except during periods of acute rainfall or snowfall shortages in the monsoon and winter seasons, respectively.

It is considered sacred, and in keeping with Hindu tradition, many devotees like to take a bath in it before continuing on their journey. However, in modern times, many pilgrims choose to skip this traditional bath.

Nonetheless, those who have the time or are inclined to follow the legends and traditions may choose to take a dip in the river. There are a couple of Ghats constructed for this purpose, with the first one being typically very crowded and the other being comparatively more spacious.

The river flowing under the small bridge, which is considered sacred by the pilgrims, is known as Banganga. The name is derived from two words, “Ban” which means arrow, and “Ganga” which refers to the sacred river Ganges.

According to legends, while on her way to the Holy Cave, Mata Vaishno Devi created this water body with an arrow from her quiver, giving it the name Banganga. It is also believed that she had taken a dip in it and washed her hair. Hence, some people refer to it as Bal Ganga, where “Bal” refers to hair in Hindi.

4. Charan Paduka

Charan Paduka is located at an altitude of 3380 feet, approximately 1.5 kilometers from Banganga. It is believed that the holy footprints of Mata are imprinted on a rock slab at this site.

Darshans at Charan Paduka are quick, taking only a few minutes on a normal day. Pilgrims pay their respects to the footprints of Mata engraved on the rock slab and continue their journey, symbolically touching Mata’s feet and seeking her blessings at the start of their pilgrimage.

A medical unit operated by the Shrine Board is also situated here. Equipped with all necessary medical facilities and attended by trained medical staff, it provides pilgrims with access to essential medical care.

5. Adhkuwari

Adkuwari is located at an altitude of 4800 feet and about 500 meters from Inderprastha. The fluttering flag and temple spires can be seen and announcements can be heard from the announcement booth much before reaching there.

Adkuwari is situated halfway on the track, approximately 6 km from Katra, and is an important Darshan on the visit, second only to the main Darshans at the Holy Cave.

The term Adkuwari is believed to have originated from Adi kumari, meaning “The Eternal Virgin”. According to legend, Vaishnavi, in the form of a small girl, disappeared from the Bhandaara organized by Pandit Shridhar and halted at Banganga and Charan Paduka.

She then reached Adkuwari, where she meditated and observed spiritual discipline (Tapasya) in a small womb-shaped cave for nine months. The exact spot where she meditated is located on the right-hand side of the cave and is also shaped like a womb.

This cave has become popular by the name of Garbh Joon, meaning the Womb, since Vaishnavi had observed spiritual discipline in a womb-shaped cave for nine months. It is believed that passing through this cave cleanses a devotee’s sins and purifies their soul.

During her meditation, when Vaishnavi realized that Bhairon Nath had approached the cave in search of her, she created an exit at the other end with her trident and proceeded toward the Holy Cave.

As the cave is very narrow, only one person can pass through it at a time. While the entrance is broad, as one enters further, it becomes a challenge to pass through.

However, with a prompt or a nudge from the person waiting behind, remembrance of Mata in the heart and on the lips, and crawl by crawl, one emerges from the cave, fully recharged with energy that belongs to another world.

Additionally, a medical unit of the Shrine Board is located at Adkuwari and is equipped with all necessary medical facilities attended by trained medical staff.

Located about 2.75 kilometers from Adkuwari on the new track, Himkoti is a scenic spot offering breathtaking views of the entire valley. While there is no traditional or religious significance attached to this point, its natural splendor and serene charm captivate pilgrims and visitors alike.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has developed a viewpoint, restaurant, and dosa counter at this location. Visitors can find packed and cooked food, hot and cold beverages, and essential items such as medicare and oxygen cylinders, and cassettes.

There is ample space to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. Himkoti is being developed into something more than a viewpoint, with plans to add an artificial pond, a garden, and a meditation center.

7. Sanjichhat

Sanji Chhat, located two and a half kilometers away from the Holy Shrine of Vaishno Devi Ji, is a charming little plateau. This place serves as a welcome break for pilgrims, as the upward climb ends at this point and it also offers a picturesque view. Prior to the Shrine Board’s takeover in 1986, the conditions at Sanji Chhat were vastly different.

The area was cluttered with small, unsanitary kiosks and shopkeepers would discard their waste on the hillside, creating an unpleasant sight and odor. There were no proper arrangements for drinking water, except for Chhabils.

The Dharmarth Trust had constructed a Dharamshalla, but the accommodation was extremely inadequate, with almost non-existent toilet facilities.

Sanjhichhat underwent a significant transformation after the Shrine Board took over its management. The first step was a massive sanitation drive to clean up the hillside. The small, unsanitary kiosks were removed and relocated, while the main platform was reconstructed with white marble and Kota Stone, adorned with a fountain and floodlights.

New shopping complexes and toilet blocks were also erected, and the water supply was improved. To enhance medical facilities for pilgrims, a 24-bed hospital was established. Additionally, a new helipad was constructed to allow for the recent introduction of helicopter services between Katra and Sanjhichhat.

8. Bhairon Ghati

Prior to the takeover of the holy Shrine by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in the year 1986, the Bhairon Temple was ignored and the track leading to the temple was in a dilapidated condition, making the climb a grueling task.

However, after the takeover, significant emphasis was placed on developments in this area, particularly the widening and beautification of the track, remodeling of steps, and the construction of rain shelters and toilets.

Additionally, the entire track has been illuminated with High-Pressure Sodium Vapour Lamps and the water supply has been augmented. For the convenience of the pilgrims, toilet blocks have also been constructed and a refreshment unit named OM has been started to provide adequate and reasonably priced beverages and packed food items such as biscuits and snacks.

The Temple area has been beautified by fixing marble tiles and slabs along the pre-ambulation of the temple. As a result of these efforts, the visit of the pilgrims to the Bhairon temple is now much more convenient and memorable.

9. Vaishno Devi Darshan at Bhawan

The ultimate destination of the pilgrims, the Holy Bhawan houses the Sanctum Sanctorum – the Holy cave, where the Goddess has revealed herself in the form of Holy Pindies, manifesting Mata in her three forms Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Mata Saraswati.

Around 1.5 kilometers before reaching the Holy Bhawan, a pilgrim catches the first glimpse of it, which brings an upsurge of energy, and all the tiredness from the strenuous climb evaporates instantly, as if by some magic wand.

The relief of the last 1.5 kilometers being either level or gently sloping downwards eases the tired muscles. Filled with extra fervor and devotion, the yatra covers the last 1.5 kilometers on wings and reaches Bhawan in no time.

Legend has it that Vaishnavi, after leaving the Garbh Joon cave at Adhkawari where Bhairon Nath had located her, began climbing uphill until she reached the Holy Cave. Bhairon Nath, who was following her, found her again inside the cave and started to challenge her.

The Goddess then assumed her divine form and severed Bhairon Nath’s head with her sword. The blow was so powerful that Bhairon Nath’s head flew and landed on another spur of the mountain, about 1.5 kilometers away, which is now the site of the Bhairon Temple.

His torso remained at the mouth of the Holy Cave. The Goddess then immersed herself in deep meditation inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, where she is manifested in the petrified form, also known as the Holy Pindies, representing Mata in her three forms – Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Mata Saraswati.

The Holy Bhawan is the focal point of the pilgrimage and the most important location in the entire Yatra circuit. The Shrine Board has made extensive arrangements and facilities available for the convenience of the devotees.

These include both free and rented accommodation options, toilet blocks, Bhojanalayas, post offices, banks, communication centers offering STD/PCO services, announcement centers, blanket stores, cloakrooms, medical dispensaries (with an ICU), general stores, Bhaint shops, and a police station, among others.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi’s Yatra is among the most famous and one of the major spots of visit for Hindu devotees to see a glimpse of goddess Parvati, Laxmi, and Saraswati whose temple is built in the widely spread Trikuta Parvat. The temple of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is situated at the Trikuta Parvat which is located in a small city called Katra located in the State of Jammu. One can reach Katra by train or bus at their convenience. You can take a train from your city to the “Jammu Tawi” railway station. From Jammu Tawi, one can take a bus or train directly to Katra. Although if available prefer taking a train from your city directly to Katra as it will be much more convenient and time-saving. The approximate rate of the train or bus are as mentioned:

Delhi -> Katra (Railway Station): Rs 1300 (3rd AC) Delhi -> Jammu Tawi (Railway Station): Rs 910 (3rd AC) Jammu Tawi -> Katra (By Bus): Rs 60

Yatra Parchi Registration Vaishno Devi

After you have successfully reached the city of Katra which is also known as “Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra” (SMVD), the next thing you need to do is register yourself for the darshan of Mata Vaishno Devi. Whether you reach Katra by Bus or Train, at both places you can find the registration counter for Mata Vaishno Devi Darshan.

Queue up yourself and get yourself registered.

Note: Every individual needs to stand in the queue for registration and one person cannot register on behalf of any other family member.

At the registration counter, you will have to tell your name, city, and ZIP Code to get yourself registered successfully. Take the registration card and carefully keep it with you.

Rooms and Lodging in Katra ( Vaishno Devi)

The Katra Railway station has been built only a few years back and thus has almost all the services needed by a tourist. The station consists of rooms at cheap costs, a canteen and well-furnished washrooms. You can take a room provided by IRCTC if available otherwise it is also convenient to book rooms near the Katra main chowk.

The rates of rooms at Katra railway station can vary from Rs 500 to Rs 2600 as per your choice.

Although, if you are planning a budget-friendly trip, low-cost rooms are advised to be taken since you don’t have to spend much time in them.

Katra Railway Station to Katra Bus Stand

If you are someone who has reached Katra via Bus, then the spot to begin your journey towards the temple is nearby, but the people who reach Katra by train, need to take an auto rickshaw from Katra Railway station to Katra Bus Stand. The cost of an auto rickshaw from the railway station to the bus stand is Rs 110. If you haven’t already booked a room at Katra railway station you can look for rooms near Katra Bus Stand.

The cost of the room near the bus stand can vary from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 as per your choice.

Note: If you are planning a budget trip, you can also rent a room for 2-3 hours to refresh yourself and then in the same hotel you can submit your bags in the lockers. This will help you save the complete cost of the room and also provide you with free lockers to drop off your luggage.

Starting the Yatra of Vaishno Devi

The trek of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is 13 Km long adding 2 km more situated the Temple of Bhairon Ji. After reaching Katra Bus Stand, the Katra main chowk is just a few steps ahead. From Katra main chowk, one needs to go to the

“Banganga Check Post” where the checking procedure is done and the trek starts.

The distance of Banganga Check Post from Katra main chowk is approximately 1 km and you can also rent an auto till there. If you wish you cover the distance on foot, you can simply follow up on the way.

The cost of an auto rickshaw from Katra main chowk to Banganga Check Post is Rs 200.

It is also suggested to eat something light from the Katra main chowk before starting the trek.

Leaving your luggage behind, you need to carry a small bag to take essential things with you on the trek.

The Yatra of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi can be completed in 12 hours or it can also be done in two days as per your wish.

The main essentials which must be included in your bag are a water bottle (even an empty bottle will work since there are many water points during the trek), light meals including fruits and snacks, refreshments, basic first aid, and medicines.

Although, the availability of every basic need is provided in the way it is best to carry your things.

No network Availability

As soon as you enter the state of Jammu, none of your SIM cards will work. The network will be unavailable no matter what the SIM might be. So to stay connected and use the internet, you can buy a new SIM card for yourself which will be available at many shops during the trek.

The cost of the SIM card is Rs 250 and you will get unlimited calling and 1 GB/day of data (Jio).

Postpaid SIM cards will also work in Jammu, so if you don’t need to buy a new SIM if you already have a postpaid one. You can also buy a new postpaid SIM for permanent use. The recharge of postpaid SIM card starts with Rs 399 in most SIM card providers.

If you don’t wish to buy a new SIM card, you can make use of the PCO facility which is available at several spots during the trek.

The cost of calling the PCO booths is Rs 5/min.

Reaching BanGanga Check Post

After reaching the Banganga check post, you can show your registration card/parchi and start your trek. At the Banganga check post flows the small and auspicious banganga river. People often take a bath here and then continue the journey ahead.

If you are planning to take a bath in the Banganga there are bathing spots available as soon as you cross the Banganga check post.

Now the main trek of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi has started. To make your journey slightly easy you can take sticks or dandi or lathi to act as a support during the trek. The cost of the Lathi/Dandi/stick is Rs 20 from which Rs 10 is refunded when you return it. Remember to return the stick at the same shop where you bought it

otherwise shopkeepers don’t accept it.

Pony/Horses and Palki

The trek of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is a tough one and thus there are the availability of Ponies/Horses and Palki for people. It is also suggested to take the old routed (Purana marg) to reach the temple. The new Tarakot Marg is under construction and is not chosen by people as of now.

Ponies/Horses: Rs 1000 per person (till Bhawan)

The cost of Palki is slightly more as compared to Ponies/Horses. Though the cost of these services varies from spot to spot.

About the Trek (First Darshan)

On your way during the trek, you will witness many small and beautiful temples. There are shops and eating joints where you can refresh yourself by buying drinks like lemon juice, lassi, etc.

There are many shortcuts through stairs on the whole trek which can be taken to save time. But it is not advised to old people or heart patients to go through stairs as it will tire you up a lot.

In the beginning, you will also see shops where you can get a photo clicked with an idol of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi. The cost to get a photo is approximately Rs 30 and it can vary as per the size. There are also sofa massage shops where you can give some relief to your legs for just Rs 30 for fifteen minutes. Other shops on the way include dry fruit shops, candy shops, fruit shops, etc.

The first major darshan is done at the “ Charan Paduka” temple which lies after about one hour of the trek, nearly 3 km from the Banganga check post. The temple is generally crowd-free and thus you can quickly see the auspicious charan padukas of Mata Vaishno Devi.

Way to Ardkuari Ji

After the Charan Paduka temple, you will further move on to the next destination called “Ardkuari Mandir”. On your way on the trek, you can make use of the PCO

calling booths if you haven’t bought a sim card. After covering a journey of around 7 km, you will reach your next destination at the Ardhkuari Mandir.

There is a lot of waiting at the Mandir, so you need to take a parchi and get yourself allotted to a group to witness “Garbh Joon” the main cave of Ardhkuari. After this, there is a waiting period of a maximum of 15 hours before you can do the darshan of Ardkuari Ji. So, it is wise to move forward with your yatra towards Bhavan, and on the way back you can get the darshan of Ardhkuari Ji (till then your group number would have come).

If you are planning to spend a night at Ardkuari Ji by any chance, there is a facility of Blankets (although there is a lot of rush to get one), double bedrooms are available at Rs 700 and dormitories are available at Rs 120/person.

Way to Bhawan (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi main temple)

From Ardhkuari, there is also the facility to take electricity-powered minivans to reach Bhawan (the main temple). The cost of these vans is:

From Ardkuari to Bhawan: Rs 356/person From Bhawan to Ardkuari: Rs 236/person.

After the trek of almost 6 km, you will see the auspicious temple of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi which is also called Bhawan. On your way from Ardkuari to Bhawan, you will see many monkeys of whom one needs to be aware. They snatch things, especially edible items.

After reaching Bhawan, you can keep your bag, lathi, and any leather item you are carrying in the lockers. Lockers are available free of cost just near Bhawan. After keeping things in the locker, you can buy the Prashad from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Counter.

The cost of Prashad varies depending upon its quantity. The cost can be between Rs 51 to Rs 501. The average Prashad which most people buy is Rs 151.

Phones, mobile cameras, and any digital item is not allowed inside Bhawan and thus it is advised to leave them back in the locker.

As you enter the mandir, you need to walk nearly 100 meters to reach the cave of Mata Vaishno Devi. Here you need to stand in the queue inside a 42 meters long cave. After waiting for a while nearly half an hour, you will be able to do the darshan Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji and further move out of the cave.

Way to Bhairon Ji

After the trek of Bhawan comes to the trek of Bhairon Ji. It is a 2 km trek from Bhawan but is slightly more difficult than the trek to Bhawan. You can also take Ponies/Palki from Bhawan to Bhairon Ji.

There is also the availability of a Ropeway at the Bhawan which will land you directly at the Bhairon Temple. Although, the ropeway is only recommended if you are an old person since it takes a lot of time to buy a ticket and then stand in the queue for your turn to come.

The cost of the ropeway is Rs 100 (including both ways). If you want to take the ropeway for just one side then also the cost remains the same.

The cost of a Pony from Bhawan to Bhairon Ji costs around Rs 350.

If you are a youngster and trekking to Bhairon Ji on foot, it is advised to take the stairs since it will cover a lot of distance in no time.

After a 2 km trek, you will reach the Bhairon Temple where you can buy Prashad and easily do the darshan by waiting in queue for only 10-15 minutes. There is also an open space at the Bhairon temple from where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the mountains and an amazing sunset if you reach it at that time.

Things to know on your way back to Ardhkuari

After doing the auspicious darshan of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and Bhairon Ji it is now time for you to return to Ardhkuari. While on your way back, you can either take the same path you came from or you can also choose to take the “Hathi Matha” route. The “Hathi Matha” route is a much silent, hassle-free, and quick route to go down. This route can be taken by going left to the Bhairon Temple.

On your way back through the Hathi Matha route, you can visit the prasad distribution counter where you can have the Prasad free. Now you can reach Ardhkuari and check out if your group number has come.

Either your group number would be in a queue for some time or it would have already passed out before you reach Ardhkuari.

In case your group number has been passed, don’t panic. Get in the line of the next group and at the entrance let the guard know that your group has passed and they will let you in. This is a daily scenario at the temple and thus the guards are well aware of this situation.

How to book a Helicopter?

If you are someone looking to go to Bhawan via helicopter then this is what you need to do. The helicopter services at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi run from Katra to Sanjhichhat. Sanjhichat is a place near Bhawan where the helipad is made and thus the helicopter leaves you there.

To book a helicopter, you can either do a booking online at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine board website or a direct booking is also available when you reach Katra.

The cost of a helicopter is Rs 1045/person. Although it may vary as per the availability of the helicopter.

Vaishno Devi Yatra from Katra to Mata Vaishno Devi Mandir is one of the most popular pilgrimages in the world. The starting point of the 13km yatra is Banganga, 1.5-2 km from Katra main city. It concludes at the Holy Cave (also known as Bhawan) with the darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi in the form of three naturally formed rocks which are known as pindies . Helicopter Timings: Helicopter services start at 08:30 AM, and it takes 08 minutes to reach Sanjichhat from Katra. The service remains active till approximately 07:00 PM with helicopters taking off about every 20 minutes or so from Katra as well as Sanjichhat. Helicopter Tickets: One way fare from Katra to Sanjhichhat or vice versa is priced at INR 1730 per person. Two-way ticket for Katra to Sanjhichhat is INR 3460 per person. Children below 2 years of age are carried free of cost and must travel in the lap of an adult.

Vaishno Devi Yatra Registration

Registration for Vaishno Devi Yatra is mandatory before undertaking the yatra.
Registration can be done either online or from the Yatri Registration counter (YRC) near the Bus Stand Katra by standing in a queue.
Another Yatra Registration Counter is located near the second bus stand. Called YRC-II, it is one km away from the main counter on Udhampur road.
Try to make a prior booking online.
Every Yatri is issued a Yatra Access card (Yatra slip/Parchi) upon registration.
Once registered at the counter, all yatris are automatically insured for any accidental casualty on the Vaishno Devi Yatra route. It is a free insurance, valid only in the case of accidental deaths. The amount of insurance is INR 3,00,000 for majors and INR 1,00,000 for minors.

Vaishno Devi Yatra Parchi

The yatra access card or yatra parchi is issued to every yatri on registering for Vaishno Devi Yatra. It is documentary permission for the yatri to proceed on the journey to Maa Vaishno Devi Temple.
The yatra parchi is valid for 6 hours from the issue. Make sure to cross the first check post situated at Banganga (1.5km away from the YRC-I) within 6 hours. Otherwise, the yatra slip is confiscated at the check post, and a new slip is required to be issued.
The major role of Yatra Parchi is at the Bhawan. The slip is rechecked at the Yatra Slip Counter located on the left-hand side immediately after the luggage check post. Each yatri is allocated a group number which determines the sequence of darshan and the waiting time.
After taking a bath at the Bathing Ghat, reach Gate No.1. Upon announcement or display of the group number on the display board, you are allowed inside the queue

Accommodation

There is a shrine board Yatri Niwas near the bus stop called Niharika Yatri Niwas and Shakti Bhawan. It is ideal for a short stay of a few hours with a/c and non-a/c rooms. Dorm bed starts from as low as INR 100
Basic free accommodation services are available at Niharika Complex and near Yatra Parchi counter II (YRC-II). Blankets are also provided free of cost

Himkoti – This place lies on the new track. Offering awe-inspiring views of the valley, Himkoti exudes a mysterious and ethereal charm.

The devotees have to pay Rs. 300 per person as charges for the car service from Adhkuwari to the Bhawan. While the return fare to Adhkuwari is Rs. 200.

Checkpoints

There are two checkpoints en route Vaishno Devi trek. Out of the two, the first is at Ban Ganga. Yatris have to show their ‘Parchi’ here. They have to get this slip checked and stamped at this place. After this, they have to undergo a security check.

Vaishno Devi Darshan Tips

The most important thing for which you have undertaken the enthralling trek and reached here is to have Darshan of the goddess. The Vaishno Devi Darshan timings is not fixed. The temple remains open 24*7. Thus, devotees can get Darshan anytime soon they reach the shrine. But, it is during the Aarti that the pilgrims have to wait for two hours to perform pooja. The Vaishno Devi Attka Aarti is performed twice daily at 6:20 am – 8:00 am and 7:20 pm – 8:30 pm. Read on to know more about the Darshan.
Take a bath before proceeding for the Darshan. Separate bathing ghats, toilets and bathrooms are available for men and women nearby Bhawan. Efforts have been made to maneuver the water from the sacred cave to these bathrooms.
Thereafter, avail a locker facility and deposit all your belongings including your mobile phones, cameras and shoes there.
Subsequently, reach gate number 1. Wait for the announcement of your group number. Once it is called, proceed for the much awaited moment. Meanwhile, you can enjoy Vaishno Devi live Darshan at many of the televisions installed on the way.
Usually, it takes no time to have Darshan. But, during peak season or Navratri, pilgrims have to wait for at least 8-9 hours in the queue to get the Darshan. But, the wait during that time is surely worth it.
Once you reach in the waiting hall, you will find a designated area where you have to give your coconut. In return, you will get a token. Keep it safe with you.
Next, you proceed towards the entry point to the shrine. You will see two caves here. Out of the two, one is ancient and original. In the bygone era, yatris used to travel through this only. Even today, this cave is open for the public for a few days. Obtaining darshan through this gave is a matchless experience. Since the old cave remains closed majority of the year, two new tunnels are created for the convenience. One is used to take the pilgrims to the holy pindies while the other is designated for the exit purpose.
Also, at the opening of the original cave, the torso of the Bhairon Baba is located in the form of rock. Pilgrims have to step on it before entering the Purani Gufa at Vaishno Devi.
At the end of the tunnel, Mother Goddess keeps on waiting for her followers. There are no statues, idols or images. Rather, three pindies representing Maa Lakshmi, Maa Saraswati and Maa Kali collectively represent Maa Vaishno, an incarnation of the three Supreme Energies. Once you reach there, concentrate only on the pindies and the description given by the priests. Bow down, make a wish and move further quickly in order to let other pilgrims have the darshan.

What to do after having Darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi?

After cherishing the Darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi till your heart’s content, move out of the tunnel. Adjacent to the gate, you will find Amrit Kund and Charan Ganga. Fill the water flowing from the tap in a bottle or just drink it as Parsad. This water comes from the holy cave and is said to have healing and purifying properties.
As you move a little further from the Amrit Kund, you will see Parsad counter. Devotees get a parshad in the form of a small pouch containing Mishri and a coin, also known as Khazaana (treasure). You can keep this coin in your wallet or locker where you keep your cash. It is supposed to bring good luck and prosperity.
Remember the token you received in the waiting hall upon giving your coconut? It’s the time to use it now! Show the token and get your coconut back as parshad.
Later on, devotees have to do ‘Kanya Pujan’. They can either do it at the shrine itself or after coming back to their home.

Use dustbins to throw your garbage.
Motivate other pilgrims en route.
Dress appropriately.
Prepaid SIM cards do not work in Jammu and Kashmir. But you can always use postpaid or local SIM Cards.
In case anyone gets lost, simply inform at the shrine offices or security guards.
Maintain the sanctity of the place.
Be aware of the monkeys. They instantly jump out of nowhere and usually attack on your mobile phones, parsad and other eatables. Keep them at bay but don’t throw stones on them.
If travelling in monsoon season, pack a raincoat and in case of winter months, keep woolens with you.
Deposit your offerings only in the donation boxes.
Except for cash and selected offerings, nothing is allowed inside the Holy Cave. So, don’t carry any extra items with you.
Don’t carry articles of general use like belts, wrist watches with leather belts, combs, pen, pencil, purses, handbags, etc.
Don’t shout slogans of praises around the sanctum sanctorum and inside the tunnel.
Don’t litter here and there.
Don’t stand for too long near the landslide-prone areas.

Don’t use the stairs if you are a heart patient or are prone to blood pressure issues.
Using shampoo, soap, oil, etc. at the Bathing Ghats is strictly prohibited.
Avoid offensive language or vulgar gestures en route.
Smoking, drinking liquor, eating non-vegetarian food or betel leaves and chewing tobacco is strictly prohibited.
Don’t encourage begging.
Don’t take anything from strangers.

My husband goes to Vaishno Devi temple every year on the occasion of his birthday. Since it was his first after marriage, I had the opportunity to go along. Because it was husband's birthday and I wanted to do the cake cutting ritual at midnight. So we had tea and we discussed about our plan for the next day. Actually, the hotel staff had told us that since it was not very crowded at the shrine (we visited in second week of feb), helicopters were available even to the visitors like us who hadn't planned ahead. We hovered back and forth among the options of going by foot, by horse or by helicopter. But after we were still awake after midnight, both of us felt that it won't be possible to wake up very early. We finally decided to try taking the helicopter.

Somewhere before Katra✨

Afterwards, husband slept off and I was still awake. Despite tiredness, sleep was elusive for me and I was feeling a strange restlessness. To be very honest, I was perhaps feeling anxious about being able to make it to the temple. Anyhow, I couldn't sleep before 4.00 a.m. and we got up at 6.30 a.m. again. After getting freshened up, we reached Helicopter ticket counter at Niharika complex near busstand at 7.30 a.m. After spending an hour there and talking to fellow pilgrims and security personnel, we got to know that the helicopter tickets were being issued only against the cancellations being made to original bookings. It could be a long wait and therefore we decided to forego the helicopter plan and rather take the horse till shrine Bhawan to save time and energy.

After breakfast we started our yatra, which I shall elaborate on after quoting a brief history of the temple.

Brief History of Vaishno Devi temple:

According to legends, at times immemorial, Mata Mahakali, Mata Mahalakshmi and Mata Mahasaraswati with their collective power and essence created a devi named trikuta and told her to live on earth to uphold righteousness there. Devi Trikuta was then born to Ratnakar who lived in south India. Devi Trikuta was inclined to spiritual practices and meditation from the very beginning and spent most of the time in practices of self realisation. When Lord Rama in Satyuga was going to Sri Lanka, he came across Devi Trikuta. Devi at once realised him to be incarnation of Lord Vishnu and asked him to merge her into himself. But Lord Rama knew it wasn't the right time and assured to visit her again from his way back to Lanka. He further said if she would recognise him then, he would merge her into himself. But on his way back, Devi wasn't able to recognise Lord. Lord Rama then told her to do sadhna on the trikuta mountains and bless mankind till the arrival of Kaliyuga. He told her that he would merge himself into her during his kalki avatar in Kaliyuga. Devi Trikuta went to the foothills of Trikuta and did her sadhna. She was worshipped by many. It is further said that about 700 years ago, she appeared in the dream of brahmin named Sridhar who lived in a nearby village and asked him to organize Bhandara. When Bhandara was organized, Devi herself became present there to serve all. It was when Bhairon nath, a disciple sent by Maha Yogi Gorakh nath in search of devi came across devi Trikuta who instantly became attracted to devi. Devi disappeared but Bhairon nath continued chasing her. Devi went following the route of Banganga where she shot an arrow and water was burrowed from earth. Devi quenched her thirst, passed by charanpaduka, ardhkuwari and finally reached the cave shrine. Bhairon nath did not give up the chase and was finally beheaded by devi. His head fell about 2 km away where current Bhairon nath Mandir is situated. Bhairon nath asked for forgiveness and devi blessed him with the boon that every devotee who came to Vaishno devi shrine will have to visit Bhairon nath temple to complete the yatra. Devi then merged into her subtle essence and assumed the form of three pindies (rocks) which are believed to be the three devis Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati whose combined essence is Mata Vaishno Devi, every pilgrims destination.

Part 1 of Yatra - From Katra to Banganga:

Autos are easily available from Katra to Banganga. At Banganga there is a check post with separate queues for men and women. There are multiple horse vendors who'll approach you to take the horse.

Part 2 of Yatra - From Banganga to Ardhkuwari and Ardhkuwari to Shrine Bhawan:

You may choose one of the three options depending on your fitness, zeal and determination levels:

1. Take the horse till the Shrine Bhawan

2. Take the horse till Ardhkuwari and walk from Ardhkuwari to Shrine Bhawan

3. Trek all the way from Banganga to Shrine Bhawan

The charges from Banganga to Ardhkuwari and Shrine Bhawan are fixed by the shrine board and paid at the counter just before the check post at Banganga. We chose to take the horse till the shrine Bhawan. We started our journey at around 9.45 a.m.

On the way to Ardhkuwari, there is Charan Paduka temple and many other small temples and idols of mother goddess where many pilgrims make a pitstop for selfies and photography. There are fruit and juice vendors also on the way. Trekkers are chanting Jai Mata Di every few meters. Horse person will be walking besides the horse and they will take one or two rests in between. As you will go further up, the bird eye view of Katra town will look beautiful from certain points. The entire trek to the Shrine Bhawan is paved and roofed. Though there is separate trek available for the horses and pedestrians but hardly anyone follows the separate trek. So, pedestrians have to be a little careful while walking. At Ardhkuwari, there is a cave where it is said that Devi had stopped and meditated for nine months. We, however, did not stop there but I would say if there's time, one should. From Ardhkuwari we reached the Shrine Bhawan around 12.45 p.m.

There are multiple checkposts from the point where horse will drop you till the Bhawan. There are washrooms available along the way which are okayish by the standards of public toilets. Before the Shrine Bhawan, you have to leave all your belongings in a locker provided enroute by shrine board. You can not take your phone or any metal object along. The only thing you're allowed to carry is Prasad. Again, Prasad can be bought at subsidized rate from shrine board's Prasad shop.

We kept moving in queue afterwards. First we passed through a mini hallway on the right side of which is the old cave entrance to the temple. This cave is the original pathway to the pindies in the sanctum sanctorum. This cave tunnel is narrow and is mostly close to the inrush of pilgrims in peak season. It opens only in lean seasons for specific periods of time in a day. It was closed at the time of our visit. Just after passing by the old cave as the queue moves ahead, there is a life sized statue of mother goddess crafted beautifully and with grandeur which marks the entrance to new tunnels constructed up to the cave Shrine of Devi. The queue will finally reach an elevated platform of white marbles, the highest point from where the mountains can be seen all around; This platform leads to the last stretch of tunnel which merges into the cave Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. When we visited, the temple was not crowded and hence we got a good two to three minutes in front of cave. The cave shrine is the ultimate destination of every pilgrim where three pindies can be seen which are, Mata Mahakali, Mata Mahalakshmi and Mata Mahasaraswati. The combined essence of the three is Mata Vaishno Devi. It is the place where Devi after all her Sadhna had finally dissolved into her astral essence and merged into the three rocks forever immersing herself into meditation. After coming out of the tunnel, we spent a few minutes on marble platform outside to let the vibe sink in and then headed back.

Part 3 of Yatra - Back from the cave shrine, Into the Shiva Gufa and Cable car ride to Bhairon temple:

On our way back, we visited the shiva Gufa, near to dispensary which can be accessed easily by downclimb of 99 steps which lead straight to the cave with a mini pool of overflowing water and the shivlinga at the raised platform inside cave.

After that, we collected our belongings from locker and bought the cable car ticket to Bhairon nath temple. The tickets are economical at Rs. 150 for both side ride. We then hopped onto the cable car and enjoying the view reached Bhairon nath temple at the top of surrounding hill within minutes. The cable car has become a very good alternative to reach here since the on foot journey to Bhairon nath from Shrine Bhawan is around 2 km. We had Darshan, clicked some pictures and headed back.

Part 4 of Yatra: Back from Bhairon Nath to Shrine Bhawan to all the way Back to Katra:

Cable car dropped us from Bhairon nath to Shrine Bhawan area. We were hungry by the time. There are food courts near Shrine Bhawan as we make exit from the temple. We stopped at Sagar Ratna, filled our stomach and started the back journey. We started somewhere around 4.00 p.m. Occasionally there were monkeys on the way. Whenever I encountered some, I tried moving with a group. Some people were feeding monkeys which I think isn't very wise. We were walking slowly and it must have been 6.00 by the time we reached Ardhkuwari. By that time, my legs had started hurting. We had something to drink. From Ardhkuwari, In addition to the paved way, there are multiple staircases which merge into paved way at different points. We started alternating between paved way and staircases. Legs were hurting badly. We must have been some half an hour away from Banganga when we stopped at the electronic massage shop alongside the staircase. They charge just 30 Rs. for 15 minutes of massage on electronic chair. We had that and afterwards covered the last stretch of journey to Banganga. We took an auto from there and reached hotel. We had a good nights sleep and came back home next day.

On the parting note, there's this thing I want to say without going too deep into mental and spiritual conundrums I sometimes contemplate upon; I want to tell my reader one ardent belief that I have arrived at. That is - "Whatever form of God one chooses to pray to; the idolization that we look up to and rever is just a matter of our cultural and karmic influences. The supreme being, the God, the absolute truth, the highest ideal has no other message except unity. We may all differ in our approach towards prayer, in our idolization of God but all the prayers emanating from pure hearts are striving to reach the same destination, albeit the path adopted may be different. And that destination I believe is Sat Chit Ananda"

Some useful information:

1. Don't compromise on shoes if you want to trek up to the Shrine.

2. If you take helicopter, it'll drop you off at helipad approximately 2.5 km away from Shrine Bhawan from where you have to go walking.

3. If you would like to take helicopter, it is advisable to book beforehand from the website of shrine board.

4. There are Battery cars available from Bhawan to Ardhkuwari but the queue is extremely long.The same can be booked beforehand from the home page of shrine board website.

5. You may, if you like, carry some small bluetooth speakers to play bhakti songs along the way to keep motivated.

6. About stay, though there are many budget and upscale options, for people like me who want the immaculate rooms without burning a large hole in their pockets, I'll let you know that we stayed at Bali Resorts Extension and our stay was fabulous. Rooms and washrooms were immaculately clean with all amenities, the staff was helpful, the food was tasty and economical and location was convenient as well.

7. If you have more days to spend in and around Katra, you may visit Shiv khori temple which is about 77 km from Katra. Or you may go to Patnitop which is again around 80 km from Katra.

From cities like Delhi, Amritsar, etc you will get flights till Jammu.

By helicopter

The helicopter service to reach the Vaishno Devi Temple is also a very popular way to reach the temple. This ride offers a beautiful experience to the travelers. The ride starts from the foothills of Katra so first you will have to reach Katra. And from there the helicopter ride will start and end at Sanjichhat. The ride is approximately 8 minutes. From Sanjhichatt the temple is at a 2. 5 km distance. The tickets are available at the counters and you will have to provide a valid ID Proof and the travel documents to get tickets. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station is the nearest railway station to reach Vaishno Devi Temple located about 20 km away. So if you are planning to travel by train then you will have to reach the railway station to reach the temple. From major cities you will get to reach the railway station. Vaishno Devi Katra train is available from Delhi as well. One of the popular Delhi to Vaishno Devi Katra train is the Shree Shakti train which you can check out. Delhi to Vaishno Devi Katra distance by train is 578 km and it takes about 8 hours to reach there.

Other than that the Jammu Tawi Railway Station is another nearest railway station to reach the temple which is 51 km away. You can get trains from major cities to reach this railway station.

If you are travelling from Agra then Agra to Vaishno Devi Katra distance is 873 km and it takes about 16 hours to reach there by road. From Amritsar the distance is 272 km and it takes about 7 hours to reach the temple. Haridwar to Vaishno Devi Katra distance is 630 km and it takes about 13 hours to reach there. Other than buses or cabs, shared rides are also available from a lot of locations which you can opt for as well.

The trekking trail to Vaishno Devi is a lit path that makes it possible for the devotees to trek all day long for all through the year. This trekking path has all the facilities from food stalls to medical aids, toilets etc. The trek starts from Katra till the temple. However there are also horses, palanquins as well as ponies that can cover some distance for you. So you can opt for that as well. The whole trek is about 12 km long.

Vaishno Devi Katra in Autumn (October to November)

This is the peak season for the pilgrims in Vaishno Devi. With Navratri and Diwali the whole area gets dressed in festivities. There are frequent yatras with excited pilgrims chanting Jai Mata Di. The month of October is the most crowded so if you are visiting around that time be prepared for that. After Diwali however the crowd thins down. If it is between 15, 000 to 18, 000 then the crowd will be average. And if it’s more then it would be very crowded. These are the cold winter months in Vaishno Devi. It will be a best time to visit Vaishno Devi in January if you want to enjoy snowfall. The temperature during this time goes to sub zero which is very cold. You will have to be physically really fit to reach the temple during this time period. Exact Location of the Vaishno Devi Mandir

He tried many times to call her name, but she never came to give him darshan. Unsettled and feeling helpless, he gave up trying to find her.

One night Vaishnavi comes to him in his dream and tells him that she is Vaishno Devi and shows him where her cave is. A happy Shridhar went to search the cave. Whenever he strays, the dream vision returns to him, showing exactly where he is. He finally found his destination; he was pleased to see his favorite god in front of him. One version of the story has that three Mahadevi’s appeared before him and gave him the three Pindies. God gave him permission to worship his idols and asked him to spread the glory of his temple. Also, he blessed her with four sons. Pandit Shridhar then completely surrendered himself to his will and decided to spend his entire life in worshiping the Goddess. Word of this event spread, and soon devotees started flocking to this holy cave to pay their respects to the great goddess Vaishno Devi.

History of the Vaishno Devi Temple

There is no exact record as to when the shrine of Vaishno Devi Temple came into existence. Certain geological studies seem to indicate that it may be nearly a million years old. Though the Vedas make no mention of Mata Vaishno Devi, the earliest reference to a mountain deity named Trikuta has been made in the Rigveda. The track leading up to the Shrine was in poor condition prior to August 30th, 1986, when the management was taken over by the Board. It was filled with potholes, and loosely laid stones, and had an uneven surface. However, after the Board took over, the entire track was reconstructed.

It was widened, paved with tiles, and made much smoother. In addition, the steep inclines were made gentler in several places. By Road (Holy track) –

By Pony/ Palki- From Katra, pilgrims can hire a pony/ horse and palki/ palanquin from Darshani Darwaja – the starting point of the holy sojourn till Ardhkuwari or Bhawan. They can take a night halt at Ardhkuwari if required. Ardhkuwari is halfway through the holy Yatra, just 6 km from the base.

By Trekking –

Devotees who wish to walk till bhawan can choose from three paths –.

An old track that starts from Darshani Darwaja and covers Ban Ganga, Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari, Himkoti, and Sanjichhat. The second route also starts from Darshani Darwaza and covers Ban Ganga and Charan Paduka; starting. Just below Ardhkuwari near Indraprastha viewpoint. Offerings towards the shrine can be made in cash or through demand drafts or cheques. Various donations counters has been set up by the Shrine Board where devotees can offer donations. There centers are available at Bhawan, Adkuwari, Sanjichatt, Bhawan, Enquiry and Reservation Section at Nikarika, Katra and at Central Office of Shrine Board located at Katra. Computerized process has been developed at these donation centers and has well trained manpower.

Adequate facilities like medical camps (24 hour charitable dispensary), oxygen cylinders, accommodation, catering, porters are available at Katra, Bhawan, Banganga, Sanjhichatt, Adkuwari. A 24 hr ICU is also present at Bhawan. Many ponies, palkies or pithoos facilities on the routes are also available.

But if a person is suffering from breathing problems, asthmatic, orthopedic problems or some other ailments, then it is advisable to proceed for the yatra after consulting a doctor and due medical check-up.

Hi 1. Total what time will it takes to reach bhavan from katra if ilI start at 6 p.m evening?? 2. Please help about price for Helicopter/palki/horse Cheers

1. It depends on the age and fitness of the person. It may take anywhere from 5 to 8 hours to climb from Katra to Bhavan and about 3-6 hours to descend.

2. The chopper was costing Rs. 2300+ for return journey when we went in the first week of March. One way price is half of that but rarely you get the booking for single journey. For booking chopper, you need to login to Maa Vaishnodevi site, create your login ID and password and then book the chopper. If you are going by chopper, it includes yatra parchi and VIP darshan.

It should take you 3-4 hours to reach bhawan if you are taking small 5-7 minutes break 3-4 times during the yatra. if you have old people in the group then please take adequate rest and do not worry about the time. if you have a time constrain then suggest to take pony for the old people. However pony ride can be painful.

For a normal person it takes about 4.5 hours to reach bhavan from katra , u can now take battery operated car also which they have recently started or else can opt for the helicopter , price u need to ask there itself .

10 yr back I was 25 I took 3.5 hr now I m 35 it took me 6 hr n I took plenty of 4 to 5 breaks of 5 to 10 mins.

It takes around 6 hours if u are young person and taking normal breaks

4 hours if u using pitthu & battery operated auto and ropeway for Bhairav

3:5 hours if u taking chopper & ropeway

See it's a distance of 13.5 kms from the entry check post avearge it should take about 4 to 5 hrs and maybe less than 4 if you fit helicopter charges as close to 1700 per trip . Rest are prices written at the starting point and shrine board you can negotiate depending on the rush weekends are rush hours but it's best to travel during weekdays as it's different fun

My friend and myself started the climb at 2.15am after a good night's rest. We could reach the Bhavan by 6am. But had to wait in the queue for almost an hour as Aarthi had started just then.
