Organic baby food is grown without the use of hormones, preservatives, artificial flavors or colors, genetically modified organisms (GMO) or synthetic pesticides, explains registered dietitian Stephanie Middleberg, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., founder of Middleberg Nutrition and author of The Big Book of Organic Baby Food and The Big Book of Organic Toddler Food .

"Some studies also show that organic foods often contain higher nutrients than their conventional counterparts." But Middleberg adds that organic foods are far from perfect, and there is still great nutrition in conventional produce and baby food as well. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends purchasing organic produce when possible, especially for items known to be highest in pesticide residues.

When evaluating the best organic baby food options for little ones, our registered dietitians first zoned in on ingredients, nutrition facts, food preparation and packaging. We made sure that brands also tested their products for heavy metals and prioritized picks that have been verified by the Clean Label Project , which tests hundreds of products (including baby food) for toxic metals, contaminants and more. We then put several brands through a taste test with a panel of babies, toddlers and parents for real life feedback on which flavors they loved and which ones they scraped off their tongue. We also consulted Middleberg and a panel of experts for their recommendations.

You can learn more about how we evaluate baby food — including tips for understanding baby food stages and what to look for on the label — at the end of this guide. When possible, feed your baby by hand with a spoon from a pouch instead of letting them suck straight from the package — this helps them develop important mouth muscles required for speech and chewing and encourages them to take a break between bites.

Once Upon a Farm Organic Fruit & Veggie Blends (24 Pack)

Every ingredient on this line of baby food pouches — co-founded by Jennifer Garner — is certified USDA organic and sustainably grown. All items are made using whole ingredients and are free from added sugars or preservatives. In addition to the fruit and veggie blend line, the brand also offers dairy-free smoothies and even overnight oats. Middleberg recommends this brand too. You can order the pouches off of Amazon or via a subscription on their website for even more savings.

Our nutrition pros say that Once Upon A Farm sets themselves apart from the other brands we reviewed due to the cold-pressure (HPP) process that the blends utilize to lock in the nutrients, taste and texture of the farm-fresh ingredients instead of traditional heat processing methods. Testers said their littles loved the flavors, and one parent said she liked that the packs needed to be refrigerated, which made her feel that they were "very high quality."

Another parent said, "No preservatives! I love that it’s all fresh, healthy ingredients I can pronounce." That being said, they aren't the best for convenience when you are on-the-go. The pouches can be unrefrigerated for up to four hours though, and the brand does offer a cooler pouch for ease.

Once Upon A Farm is the first baby and kids food brand to receive the Clean Label Project Purity Award , a third-party nonprofit that tests for hundreds of environmental and industrial toxins including heavy metals. All packaging is BPA-, BPS- and PVC-free as well. Although the pouches are not curbside recyclable, the brand has partnered with Recyclops to repurpose the pouches and keep them out of landfills.

Mom Shazi Visram founded Happy Family Organics to provide a wide variety of healthy organic baby food options to parents. The brand offers a range of 100% USDA organic jars and pouches that are Clearly Crafted, meaning they are fully transparent so you can see exactly what is inside the pouch. Plus, they come in at a lower price point than other organic options in the baby food aisle and are actually slightly bigger than other pouches.

The brand says that they work closely with suppliers, farmers and field experts to create processes that ensures quality and safety, and many of the Clearly Crafted pouches are Clean Label Project Purity Award winners too, meaning they have been tested for hundreds of toxins, heavy metals and contaminants.

Both the apple, kale and avocado pouch and the apples, guavas and beets pouches were a hit. "I think it's great to expose littles to unique flavors from the get-go, and this made that easy in an approachable way," one parent said. "I really appreciate that the sugars are natural and no added sugars have been included."

We also like their line of brain blends that incorporate DHA and choline, essential nutrients to support baby's brain health. Littles enjoyed it and couldn't taste the difference. "I love the focus of this product and the added benefits and additions for the health of young ones in the vital growth years," a parent tester said.

Founded by a practicing neurosurgeon, this line of organic baby food from Cerebelly focuses on incorporating 16 brain-supporting nutrients into every product, ranging from pouches to snack bars. The product is shelf-stable, making it very convenient for busy parents, but this doesn't sacrifice on quality or nutrition.

Our dietitians point out that the organic baby food pouches from Cerebelly are veggie forward and contain no added sugar. Parent testers appreciated the “thoughtful and healthful combinations,” and babies loved them too. They also offer a line of savory bone broth purees with 5 grams of protein in every pouch for children 11+ months.

Cerebelly pouches were the first shelf-stable baby food to receive the Clean Label Project Purity Award , which means they have been tested for hundreds of contaminants including heavy metals, chemicals, plastics, pesticides and more. We also appreciate that the products are free from the big eight allergens and that the Cerebelly facilities undergo rigorous processes to ensure that cross-contamination is highly unlikely.

Introducing your little one to unique flavor profiles can foster the development of an adventurous eater who is willing to try new plant-based foods. This organic baby food company focuses on just that, curating options that incorporate rich spices and complex flavors into every meal. Everything is made with USDA organic ingredients and comes in individual single servings.

You can purchase meals a la carte via their website or on Amazon , and opt for a subscription that includes 16 meals delivered every month. Meals are free from added sugar and have no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. All of the recipes are vegan and feature veggies and beans as the first and primary ingredients. Some mix in nourishing fat sources like coconut milk and extra virgin olive oil too. The selection is a bit limited compared to other services but the quality is top-notch. Plus, lil'gourmets was awarded the Clean Label Project Purity Award.

Surprisingly, little ones liked the globally-inspired flavor combinations. Parents loved the taste and appreciated its clean ingredients. One mommy tester commented on how fresh the meals were and loved that the flavors weren't something they would typically incorporate when cooking homemade baby food themselves.

This innovative baby food brand offers exceptional high-quality meats, poultry and fish in pouch form alongside organic veggies and premium oils. It takes the prep work out of an otherwise messy ordeal of having to prepare and puree protein for little ones. The blends are balanced nicely from a flavor standpoint too and the ingredients are best-in-class according to our nutrition pros.

The BPA-free pouches are shelf-stable and a great way to introduce tasty savory blends and protein-packed ingredients like salmon, bison, turkey and more to your child. Their grain-free puffs made with cassava flour are also noteworthy as your little one grows, and their toddler pouches incorporate nutritious bone broth. Not only do they hold a Clean Label Purity Award, but they are also Certified Pesticide Free by CLP.

Parents loved the use of premium ingredients like organic produce and extra virgin olive oil. "My doctor kept telling me to introduce meat to my daughter but I just didn't know how to prepare it," one parent said. "These pouches were a simple way to give my daughter meat and she absolutely loved it! She took it as easily as she does fruit purees." Trumbower is also a fan of Serenity Kids highlighting their protein-rich blends.

Designed to grow with your baby as they progress into toddler and big kid years, t his subscription-based baby food service is one you can stick with for a while. They offer a plethora of BabyBlends from freshly made single-ingredient purees to textured multi ingredient options that are all USDA Organic and Clean Label Project verified.

We especially love their convenient smoothies that are USDA organic and are packed with nutrient-dense ingredients like chia seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, sunflower seed butter, coconut milk and more. Babyblends start at $2.96 per blend and smoothies start at $2.82 per pouch.

The brand never uses rice, fortifiers or anything artificial in their blends, which our experts appreciate. They also utilize a cold-pressure technology as an alternative to heat pasteurization, killing harmful bacteria without the use of high heat but retaining those important nutrients. Our dietitians were impressed that this process allows the Babyblends and Smoothies to stay fresh in the fridge for up to 14 days or in the freezer for up to three months.

Parent testers were impressed with the ingredient list and fresh flavors. "The packaging and serving size was nice and seemed high quality," one parent said. "What I loved most is that my son loved it! I greatly enjoyed this too," another said. Middleberg serves as the brand's nutrition advisor, sharing that she is truly passionate about Little Spoon's products and loves that the baby food is both nutritious and delicious. "It’s a great option for parents to feel good about what they are feeding their kids."

Tiny Organics Purees & Meals

"Baby led weaning is offering your baby safe, soft table foods with the intention of them feeding themselves," explains Valerie Trumbower , P.C.D., C.L.C., who is a DONA-certified postpartum doula and a certified lactation counselor. "It doesn't need to be an either or situation; parents can do a combination of both purees and baby led weaning. Most importantly, parents should do what they're comfortable with."

These textured organic baby and toddler meals are designed for baby-led weaning and are conveniently delivered to your door. Packed with nutrient-dense ingredients, all Tiny products are free from the big eight allergens and curated by a team of chefs and neonatal nutritionists. The meals are all made fresh and shipped frozen, with purees starting at $4.19 per meal.

Tiny offers both multi-ingredient purees and textured purees designed for little ones over 6 months. Flavors are unique but were well-received by tiny testers, and the brand aims to introduce infants to their first 100 flavors to raise a healthy eater for life. One tester said, "I love the concept that you are giving your children 100 new flavors to try. Being able to put the lid back on and save for later is also a great feature. No waste, very healthy and takes the mental pressure away from always thinking about planning the next meal."

When sourcing ingredients, Tiny's team shared with GH that they require the farmers to provide heavy metal tests on the lots from the year prior and when they harvest the new lot. The team also does internal lab tests on specific ingredients to make sure it is within the brand's specifications. All ingredients are all sustainably sourced within the U.S. from local farms to reduce carbon footprint and are USDA-certified organic.

Our nutrition experts rave about these organic plant-based meals in powder form . The method Amara uses does not require repeated high heat processes. Just add water, formula or breast milk to the mix and you have a healthy meal ready for your little one in seconds. These shelf-stable pouches are excellent for on-the-go, though preparation can get a bit messy.

Testers loved that the wholesome offerings were conveniently shelf-stable and featured unique superfood combos like applesauce with maqui berry . Moms loved that they could use leftover breast milk to mix in for even more nutrition.

Amara shared with Good Housekeeping that they individually source each baby food ingredient so they have the opportunity to deeply work with suppliers and sourcing in efforts to minimize heavy metal exposure in their food. They also do not use any rice products, additives, preservatives or ingredients that are traditionally known for heavy metals. As per their website , every one of their suppliers meets annual third-party federal requirements and compliance regulations for heavy metals and organic certification.

Ideal for infants between the ages of 4 to 8 months, this line of Square Meals offers a variety of purees with impeccable ingredients. All recipes are designed by the co-founder who is a registered dietitian. They are made in small batches using organic foods that are gently cooked, steamed or roasted, then blended by hand and frozen to lock in nutrients and freshness.

Meals arrive frozen and need to be placed in the freezer or refrigerated. The brand says that you can re-freeze your Square Meals once thawed, however the consistency of the meal may be slightly altered. While they recommend heating the meals for serving, they advise to not microwave the plastic containers. You can get meals as low as $4.98 which is quite pricey, but the quality is phenomenal.

One standout to our judges and testers was that Square Baby applies the recent research behind introducing allergens early and often, incorporating them into their line of Allergen Introduction meals to take the guesswork out of feeding for parents. They also offer options with probiotics, iron, vitamin C, omega 3s, herbs and spices and more. You can filter for dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan or vegetarian too. Plus, Square Baby is a recipient of the Clean Label Purity Award.

How we tested the best organic baby foods

line break

Registered dietitians in the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab evaluated baby food products from over 30 brands, specifically analyzing ingredient lists and nutrition labels.

Our nutrition experts prioritized USDA Certified Organic options made with wholesome ingredients and free of artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. We also investigated efforts that the brands are making to minimize heavy metal exposure in their products and highlighted blends that were verified by the Clean Label Project.

In addition to expert analysis, we recruited a panel of parents and little ones to provide real-life feedback on quality, variety, portion sizes, convenience, packaging and more. We’re confident that our top picks are the best organic baby food options to provide exceptional nourishment and quality while also appeasing the pickiest of eaters.

What to look for when shopping for the best organic baby food

line break

Figuring out what to feed your little one is no easy task. Here are a few key factors you'll want to consider.

✔️ Ingredients: Infants typically start out with single-ingredient purees and then progress to two-ingredient and multi-ingredient blends. But some brands will incorporate fillers, preservatives and other additives into their products. Always read the nutrition facts panel and ingredient list of the product you plan to purchase.

✔️ Flavors: Baby food comes in all different flavors and packages. It's important to incorporate variety to create a balanced palate, and some brands offer globally-inspired flavors for even more diversity. But some "safe" flavors that you know your child will accept are always good to have on hand.

✔️ Cost: Organic baby food tends to be pricier than conventional options. Some brands offer savings if you buy in bulk, whereas other brands offer discounts if you utilize their subscription model. Either way, you'll want to make sure the food fits into your allotted budget.

✔️ Storage: Some baby food is shelf-stable and only requires refrigeration once opened. Others have to be stored in the fridge from the start. Although options stored in the fridge tend to be freshest, they aren't the most convenient for busy parents who are constantly on-the-go. Most baby food can be eaten straight from the container, whereas certain options have to be reheated. It's important to look at the preparation instructions before buying.

baby food testing for good housekeeping

✔️ Third party testing: "Look for the Clean Label Project mark," Middleberg advises. "They test for over 400+ contaminants in a variety of categories, including baby food. We have a way to go to minimize heavy metal contamination in our food. As for now, brands currently don’t have to proactively test for heavy metals so choosing foods with the Clean Label Project mark — these brands have voluntarily taken it upon themselves to get all their foods tested." She adds that these brands are also going to most likely do some extra work in that they are more selective in where they are sourcing their produce from and will likely be keeping tabs on their suppliers/farmers.

How do I know that my child is ready for baby food?

Middleberg says that the main signs to look for are your child being able to sit up without support, showing interest in food (grabs at your food, stares longingly at your food, leans in for your food), and exhibiting diminished tongue thrust reflex (this enables a baby to actually swallow food rather than push it out with their tongue).

Before starting with solids though, it is important to take into consideration the baby's signs of readiness and the recommendation of the baby's pediatrician, Trumbower says. "It's always best to speak to your pediatrician before beginning solids. The general guideline from the AAP is to begin solids at 6 months old. If your family has a history of allergies, your pediatrician may recommend a different timeline."

Should you keep breastfeeding or formula feeding when a baby is eating solid food?

line break

Definitely, says Trumbower. " T he AAP recommends that the majority of nutrition comes from breastmilk or formula for the first year . The solid food baby eats in the first year is not intended to replace a feeding but to add more nutrients and fun as your baby explores new tastes and textures." Prioritize breastmilk or formula, and have fun exploring new baby foods as a compliment to their usual nourishment.

How should I introduce my child to baby food?

line break

Those first few bites can be intimidating for both baby and parent. Trumbower offers the following tips for starting with baby food and making the transition an enjoyable one for all.

  • Be sure baby is comfortable: They should be sitting up at 90 degrees in a high chair that allows their knees to be bent and feet supported. Foot support may be difficult depending on the baby's size but you don't want the baby leaning back or forward. Bring your baby's high chair to the table so you can all eat together and the baby can watch as you're eating.
  • Prepare for the mess: Parents might struggle with the mess that comes along with feeding, but sensory development is a big piece of a baby's introduction to solids. Allowing your baby to touch and "play" with the food can be hard to watch but it's great for sensory development.
  • Take a CPR Class: Watching a baby eat is not for the faint of heart. There will be several times you'll leap in worry, sure that your baby is choking only to see them come out smiling. Feeling equipped to navigate a worst-case scenario allows parents to relax and the baby will feel that energy.
  • Try and try again: It's important that the baby has several opportunities to try new foods. Multiple exposures to a food gives your baby the opportunity to understand if it's something they like eating.

What kind of food should I give my baby first?

There is no perfect answer, but Middleberg says that for the first foods you are starting with a single food item. She notes some of her favorite first food ideas below.

  • Avocado: Great texture, fun color, milk flavor and filled with healthy fats and vitamins and minerals. You can puree it as is or add in breast milk or formula.
  • Pear: Delicious both roasted and steamed and a great source of fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. It’s sweet but doesn’t have an overwhelming flavor.
  • Sweet potato: Great color, texture and flavor! Filled with beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, fiber and potassium.

Middleberg adds that once you start with these, then you can move onto other foods and add in spices and herbs like cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. "It’s also important to include the top allergens by six months. The science is very strong in that early and consistent introduction of solids can help to prevent food allergies or at least minimize them. These include egg, dairy, soy, fish, shellfish, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts and even sesame."

How do baby food stages work?

Our nutrition experts point out that baby food stages aren’t standardized but there are general guidelines that many brands utilize. Keep in mind that every baby develops differently, and some babies are ready for stage 2 before they are 7 months old, while others may not be ready until they are closer to 10 months old. Talk to your pediatrician to help guide you throughout the process, and remember that it’s important for babies to advance through the stages on their own time.

baby food testing for good housekeeping

Middleberg breaks down the various baby food stages below, but remember that every baby is different so use this as a guide, not a steadfast rule:

  • Stage 1 (4-6 months): Smooth, watery and thin. Portion size is anywhere from one teaspoon to about two tablespoons.
  • Stage 2 (7-9 months): Still primarily smooth but begin to offer up thicker purees. Aim for roughly two feedings a day. Baby can also start to use an open cup to drink a small amount of water with meals (ideally under two ounces).
  • Stage 3 (10-12 months): Chunk purees (whether blended or mashed with a fork) as well as finely chopped foods. Your baby should be progressing towards finger foods at this stage. Aim for three feedings a day.

Is organic baby food better than conventional?

line break

Since the National Organic Program of the USDA has developed strict rules and regulations that govern USDA certified organic foods, those carrying the USDA organic seal cannot contain GMOs or any artificial preservatives, colors or flavors.

Certain studies show that organic fruits and vegetables have significantly more antioxidant polyphenols than conventionally grown produce. Encouraging an abundance and variety of fruits and vegetables at all ages is key, but organically grown produce can provide some additional benefits without the GMOs or preservatives.

That being said, organic baby food is generally more expensive and not in the budget for all families, Trumbower points out. "What's important is that the baby is exposed to a variety of healthy food including proteins, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats." Susannah Hills, MD, a board certified pediatric ENT and airway surgeon, agrees with this perspective as well. "The most important thing about what your child consumes is that they are getting the right nutrients."

The Best Baby Food Pouches for Babies and Toddlers

little journey fruit pouches

Wondering what the best baby food pouches for babies and toddlers are? I love brands that are veggie-filled and packed with new flavors for little ones to try. Keep reading for my favorites!

A selection of Little Journey Baby Food Pouches on a wooden surface.

Please note that this post contains affiliate links which allow me to earn a small commission when a purchase is made at no additional cost to you. Read more  here.

I decided to write this post because I wanted to share one of my favorite baby food finds after starting solid foods and purees. I remember glancing down the aisles of my grocery store and being a bit shocked at how pricey baby food was! No matter, I planned on making most of it myself anyways. Right?

Well fast forward to real life and it turns out that convenience products have a place in the life of every mama. Not to mention when you are out on the go and need a non-messy snack, stat. A baby food pouch is suddenly looking like a pretty good option.

Disclaimer: I’m just a normal mama doing my best and wanted to share our favorite baby food pouches as a helpful tip for other parents. If you have any questions/concerns about the following items, please ask your pediatrician: organic versus not, ingredients, serving pouches and development, etc.

I personally loved making purees, but I also know that it can be a big project. Chopping, steaming, pureeing, freezing, cleanup, it’s a lot. Supplementing with purchased baby foods and baby food pouches is a great way to stay sane, as well as incorporate foods you might not have had time to prepare in a given week.

Pouches definitely have some downsides (packaged food, not great for the environment, can sometimes replace valuable exposure to fresh fruits/veggies), but like anything, they can be helpful in moderation. Ask your pediatrician about pouches if you have any concerns.

A note on puree combinations: Please check out these great resources on starting solids with your baby and how to begin feeding combination purees to your little one. Note that pouches generally list the age/stage a baby/child should be before consuming as well.

How to Choose Baby Food Pouches

There are so many great options available for baby food pouches. At any grocery store you can find a huge range of products with different pros and cons. I even recently discovered this brand which is a pricey, but absolutely veggie-packed organic pouch option .

Though I’m going to talk about some specific brands I like, here’s some easy questions I ask before choosing a new variety of baby food pouches:

  • Is this baby food pouch age-appropriate for my baby or toddler (check the package)?
  • What is the overall quality of the pouch ingredients? Are they organic, are there added ingredients, BPA-free packaging, etc.?
  • What are the food ingredients? Is this baby food pouch mostly applesauce, or does it offer a broader range of flavors?
  • Will this pouch help my child grow accustomed to new flavors?
  • Is this product a reasonable price?

Also, a bonus tip! Don’t buy too many of a new variety of pouch until you (and baby!) decide if you like it. They can be a pricey grocery item, so it’s best to sample small at first.

Can I Just Make My Own Baby Food Pouches?

Yes! This is a fantastic option for a few reasons. 1. You are in total control of the ingredients, 2. The pouches can be super-super fresh, 3. No environmental impact from tossing pouch packaging.

You can purchase reusable pouches from places like Amazon. These reusable baby food pouches are very similar to the store-bought style.

What Are the Best Baby Food Pouches?

If you aren’t quite up for making your own pouches yet, it’s time to share my favorite store-bought variety. While everyone will have a different opinion of what makes a baby food pouch, “the best”, I definitely have a favorite. I’ll share a couple of others I purchase as well, but my best baby food pouch pick goes to the Little Journey Baby Food Pouches (note that only some of the flavors are listed online) found at Aldi:

Little Journey Baby Food Pouches from Aldi

These are my top pick for baby food pouches for a few great reasons.

Three Little Journey Baby Food Pouches.

  • They are organic. Knowing that these are organic gives me some peace of mind, especially when feeding a younger baby or choosing purees that are made of fruits or veggies that typically are found on the “dirty dozen” list. Note: The pouches do contain: “Organic Lemon Concentrate” and “ascorbic acid (to maintain color)”
  • Little Journey Baby Food Pouches are budget friendly. You get a full 4oz of puree for (at my Aldi) $0.79. YES please. None of that 3-point-something-ounce nonsense.
  • Introduce a variety of fruits and veggies. The Aldi pouches have a wide range of fruit and veggie combinations and if you choose carefully you can select flavors without any applesauce. I’ve noticed that many pouch varieties (especially those marketed to toddlers) are applesauce-based, and personally I like to grab a wider range of flavors.
  • Provide a chance to serve unique fruits and veggies. One of the great things about pouches is that they can be a chance to serve fruits or veggies you might not normally cook (looking at you, beets). When I pick up these pouches I always grab the most obscure flavors combos I can so that the pouches truly are adding something to my little’s one diet rather than just adding applesauce.
  • Pouches are purchased individually. Grab your favs or keep baby guessing with one of each! They also usually have fun new flavors around Thanksgiving time too!

A few examples of Little Journey Baby Food Pouch Flavors:

  • Apple Broccoli Pear
  • Pear Blueberry Spinach
  • Apple Blueberry Banana
  • Mango Apple Banana Avocado Kale
  • Pear Mixed Berry Beet with Flax
  • Pear Apple Broccoli
  • Apple Mango

Favorite Baby Food Pouches: Little Journey Baby Food Pouches on a wooden surface.

If you are looking for other options, I also like Earth Organics Baby Food Pouches :

Earth Organics Baby Food Pouches

These are more expensive per pouch than the Little Journey varieties, but they are great quality. There are some organic pouches available that are very high quality and also crazy-expensive (suddenly I have time to make that puree after all…). The Earth’s Best Organics are about $1.40 and they come in a wide range of flavors, including a lot of veggie-centric ones.

Earth's Best Organic Baby Food Pouch in front of the box it came in.

Some examples of Earth Organics Stage 2 Purees (6+ months) Include:

  • Wholesome Breakfast Blueberry Banana
  • Sweet Potato Garbanzo Barley
  • Sweet Potato and Beets
  • Pasta with Tomato and White Bean
  • Spinach, Lentil, and Brown Rice

Another option for baby food pouches is found at Costco:

Kirkland Signature Fruit & Vegetable Pouches

The pros of the these pouches are that they are 1. organic, and 2. come in a nice big box (no grabbing pouches one-by-one and who knows how many people have picked them up first). However, they are small (3.17oz) and mostly applesauce. Not great, but can be a nice option for toddlers especially when you need a quick + non-messy option.

A selection of favorite baby food pouches including Kirkland Signature, Little Journey, and Earth's Best Organic.

For little babies, I like to stick with veggie-heavy pouches as it seems like the fun of a pouch + the sweetness of all that yummy applesauce can make it a challenge to get baby loving other foods just as much! The Kirkland Signature Fruit & Vegetable Pouches come in a box with two flavors: Apple Strawberry Yellow Carrot and Apple Mango Yellow Carrot Peach.

Overall, if you like using food pouches occasionally with your baby or toddler, I definitely suggest checking out Aldi’s Little Journey Food Pouches. The affordability, variety of puree mixtures, and convenience is a huge help to any busy parent!

Feeding babies and toddlers is fun, but certainly comes alongside challenges too. I’d love to hear your thoughts on baby food pouches and what you love to feed your littles. I’m always up for new ideas!

Thank you, Elly

Can these pouches be frozen and then eaten?

I’ve never tried freezing them but it’s worth a try.

Are the pouches BPA-free? They are not labeled BPA-free.

Little Journey, Baby Food at ALDI!

  • November 9, 2016

little journey fruit pouches

Feeding a child is frustrating. Allegedly it takes 12 times for them to try certain foods before they will eat it. Tommy will love something one day, so I’ll go out and buy it in bulk and then refuse to eat it the next day.

Does he not like the taste? Is he not hungry? Is it not warm enough?

And then, when he doesn’t eat it, you know who does? I do. Even at 9 months old, I’m already eating Tommy’s leftovers. For now they are things like broccoli, eggs or peanut butter toast, not baby food purees obvi. Those get tossed if uneaten 24 hours after they are opened.

I think the food introduction phase kills me because I see how much food we waste. For every pouch I buy that Tommy refuses, I see myself throwing out $2 each time. I sorta feel the same way when I change his diaper and I feel like I didn’t really need too.

Luckily, I discovered a cheaper solution for trying and finding keepers

ALDI SNacks

The best part is that you’ll find a growing list of premium products exclusively available at ALDI at prices up to 50% less than those at traditional grocery stores*. So hopefully once you find a few things your kiddo likes, you can keep buying them while staying on budget.

This makes going through diapers faster than you thought humanly possible not so bad.

Diapers at ALDI range in price from $4.99 to $12.49 depending on the size and pack quantity. They boast a stretchable waist and side panels, dual leg cuffs, 12-hour leak protection, vitamin E and aloe and are hypoallergenic.

Aldi Diapers

We tried them out and are happy to report back that Tommy had no leakage, blow outs or rashes!

I was impressed by the wipes especially. For a pack of 72, they cost $1.29. As someone who uses wipes on everything, this is an amazing deal.

I am still breastfeeding Tommy but I can imagine that the formula is a huge saving compared to Enfamil or Similac at a regular grocery store.

ALDI pouches

My favorites are the organic pouches which each cost only $0.79 per 4 oz. Tommy runs hot or cold on pouches but he really likes these especially the apple, pear and spinach! They are made with pure fruit and vegetable combinations, without genetically engineered ingredients and BPA free packaging.

I like pouches because they introduce vegetables like spinach to Tommy that he otherwise wouldn’t be eating on a regular basis. I know I can make food from scratch with spinach but a good pouch is easy.

Little Munchers

Tommy also is really into eating with his own fingers so the puffs and munchers are awesome. Both cost $1.39 for a 1.48 oz package. Tommy would eat only cheese puffs if I’d let him.

Tommy Eating

If you haven’t been to ALDI before, you are in for a shocking surprise as to how affordable grocery shopping really can be. Some things to note before you go is that you’ll need a quarter to grab a shopping cart at the start of your experience, your own bags and that the unique shelving is to save money. Everything they do is to reduce their costs to run a business to keep the products priced low.

You can find an ALDI located near you by checking this location finder . If you haven’t been, you really ought to go and check it out. They have some of the best European chocolate! Curious what it looks like to shop at ALDI? I shot this video a few years ago.

This post is sponsored by ALDI. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Little Journey Snacks and Pouches at ALDI

We’re an “always-on-the-go” type of family. With 5 kids, we’re literally here, there and everywhere. Pools decks, soccer fields and basketball courts. Bus stops, preschool and school playgrounds. Doctor appointments, tutors and play dates. With Victoria being the youngest of the McClelland kids, her life has pretty much been about following along with her older brothers. She doesn’t know any different, so she loves it. She’s always the “little” center of attention wherever we go!

With Victoria being 3 years old and definitely old enough to feed herself and (dare I say it) become FULLY potty trained, packing for her on-the-go has gotten easier. I no longer need to pack 100 things in a diaper bag. Packing healthy and easy snacks for her are really my only must-haves in my diaper bag at this stage. Since we really are always on-the-go, it’s important and essential to make sure the boys are constantly fueled, as well as Victoria. The boys are pretty easy to feed, they have favorites that they love. Victoria isn’t as easy. She’s still in that stage where she will make a mess, so any food I pack – I need it to be easy for her to hold and easy enough for her to feed herself.

Since I’m an ALDI shopping mom, I’m thrilled with the grocer’s newest addition, Little Journey . Little Journey is exclusive to ALDI and is a line of baby feeding and changing essentials. There’s snacks and food, diapers and wipes, formula and baby wash. There’s really everything you need for taking care of your baby. I love that ALDI is offering their customers the ease and convenience to shop for baby while shopping for the rest of the family, too. It definitely makes a mom’s life easier!

For me personally, I’m just OBSESSED with the snacks and pouches. Victoria – literally – cannot get enough of them! I’m a stickler when it comes to feeding her healthy foods because I believe healthy habits start early and at home. I want her to fall in love with fruits and veggies. I want her to enjoy the yummy tastes of good food for her. It’s REALLY important for me to share this with her as early as possible. Little Journey offers Organic Pouches made with pure fruit and vegetable combinations that are incredible! What I love is that they have no artificial flavors or colors, made without genetically engineered ingredients, contain vitamin C and have BPA free packaging. Oh! And another amazing perk? They are super, duper easy to use on the go! So easy I can hand one to Victoria while I’m driving and know that she’s eating healthy foods and won’t make a big mess!

img_1405

Easy, peasy – the flavors, the options are endless!

Little Journey Organic Pouches come in… Apple Banana Raspberry with Yogurt, Apple Pear Green Pea, Apple Banana Peach with Yogurt, Apple Banana Strawberry with Yogurt, Banana Apple Apricot with Rice, Prune Apple Butternut Squash with Quinoa, Apple Mango, Apple Sweet Potato, Apple Carrot, Apple Blueberry Banana, Apple Pear Spinach and Apple Broccoli Pear. As you can tell, there’s a different flavor for every day of the week and then some! Plus, they’re only $.79 each!

Little Journey also offers Puffs, Yogurt Bites and Munchers in the baby snacks and food category, too! The Puffs are awesome because they dissolve fast and quick in your child’s mouth and they’re very easy for them to pick up and put in their mouth. I love that it’s a great way to get your child ready for independent eating. The Puffs come in Blueberry, Apple and Strawberry. Don’t tell Victoria, but I love to eat these, too!

img_1288

The Yogurt Bites – another one of Victoria’s faves – are made with real fruit and yogurt with no preservatives. These are truly yummy to the core, offered in blueberry, strawberry and banana! I pack these for her morning snacks when we’re out and about! These are absolutely perfect for easy eating on the go. And then there’s the Little Journey Munchers, which are delicious baked whole grain corn snacks. They come in 2 flavors – Veggie and Cheddar Cheese. These are a great accompaniment with lunches, too! They are easy to chew and swallow, Victoria loves hearing the crunching sound in her mouth! So cute!

img_1313

Definitely take the time to check out the Little Journey line at ALDI for your baby. As you can see, we’re thrilled with the Organic Pouches and Snacks. Perfect snacks for busy babies and toddlers on the go! Little Journey essentials are tested to meet high quality standards. Healthy and delicious, the perfect combination for this mom!

Thank you, ALDI!

I have actually never been to an Aldi. I never get over to that area so I always forget they’re there. I must go check them out.

These sound like great healthy snacks for kids! It’s always so hard to find healthy things to can eat on the go.

These look like great options for kids. So cool that there are many snack options available these days!

we have an Aldi right down the street and it is definitely an awesome place to shop! Great deals and a wonderful selection.

Those bite-sized treats are perfect for kids. I’m in Aldi all the time, and they’re opening a second one here now!

I’ve never been to Aldi but we have one really close to my house. Those snacks look so great for kids! I would probably even like them!

Aldi is a great store. Many cool and different products as well as good produce. The only thing I still cannot bear is having to bring a quarter to use the cart ro carry the merchandise. That is why I seldom shop there because I never have cash or coins on me =) but they have good stuff.

Kids’ snacks have become unhealthy as time goes by. Yours seem healthy and convenient. I try to make my own healthy snacks as much as is possible.

Too bad there isn’t an Aldi store anywhere near me. Even though I have no choldren I have a feeling I would love to have some of those for myself as I am driving around!

Wow! What a great line of food! I know some Mamas that need to hear about this! So glad you and your daughter love them.

I wish we had an Aldi store near us. My kid would really like those snacks for snack time.

I am so excited that an Aldi is going up just a few miles from us. I cant wait for it to open!

Oh, I haven’t been to ALDI in a little while and this is a great reminder to go! Those organic pouches look exactly like the kind of thing to have stocked up in the pantry!

I’m not familiar with the brand but it sure looks like a fun place to go and buy treats for the family;especially for the kids.

Explanations.

  • Keto: net carbs 16g If you are following a ketogenic diet (keto), you need to restrict your daily carbohydrate intake so that your body enters ketosis. For most people, this means less than 50 net carbs per day. Net carbs are calculated by subtracting fiber from total carbs. Example: A product with 26 grams of total carbohydrates and 9 grams of fiber will have 17 grams net carbs. Math equation: 26 - 9 = 17 IMPORTANT: Net carbs are per serving. Make sure you know your serving size or else you may go over your planned intake and exit ketosis.
  • Learn about fruit sugars Sugars come by many different names – table sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, cane juice, and more. Many manufacturers have started using "fruit" as a sweetener: - fruit juice - fruit juice concentrate - fruit puree Despite their healthy sounding name, these are sugars with almost no added health benefits. They just happened to come from a fruit instead of sugar cane or a beet.
  • For dieters: FoodPoints value is 2 * FoodPoints are calculated by Fooducate based on fats, carbs, fiber, and protein. They are not an endorsement or approval of the product or its manufacturer. The fewer points - the better.
  • This product is minimally processed Minimally processed products usually contain a very short ingredient list. For the most part, they are comprised of simple ingredients that you would have found in your great grandmother's kitchen 100 years ago.
  • Yippee - No added sweeteners! All the sugars here are from actual food (fruit, milk lactose,…) More info
  • Berry health benefits abound Berries are a great source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are part of what helps us stay young and healthy. Studies have shown that getting adequate amount of antioxidants can help strengthen your immune system and prevent health problems such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. Here's how to get the most out of berries: - Choose fresh or frozen fruit. While a slew of products from cereal to candy claim to have antioxidants, the closer your berry is to original state, the better. - Look for products naturally high in vitamin C. They have been minimally processed and maintain most of their antioxidants. - Find more places to add berries to your daily habits: in salads, as a snack, in yogurt, on top of cereal, on ice cream or with oatmeal. Enjoy! More info
  • Organic? Start with the "Dirty Dozen" If you'd like to go organic, but can't afford to, start out with the dirty dozen (actually the list has grown a bit). Here's a list updated for 2019: Strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes, hot peppers. More info

Anyone try these?

Yes, my son loves this brand, it’s the cheapest I have found, good ingredients and you can see through the pouch!

' src=

Omg… these are all amazing!!!!

These are just amazing! We love every flavor!!!

' src=

They are great! Well, I’ve only tasted the apple mango, but my son slurps the fruit ones down(almost 2). He used to eat the veggie ones as well. He didn’t care for the savory (turkey and peas, corn casserole, etc), but he won’t eat those from any brand.

' src=

My kids also do not care for the savory but love all the fruit/vegetables or yogurt combos.

' src=

i am 52 years young i love them

' src=

My kids love them. We always stock up in aldis. My kids like the yogurt melts and puffs there, too. You definitely save money here compared to the big name brands at the grocery store!

Baby Food Pouch Guide

1. White Leaf Provisions / 2. Cerebelly /  3. Once Upon a Farm 4. / Serenity Kids / 5. Holle

Baby food pouches are much easier to handle than jars of food, and both of my kids enjoyed them well into their preschool years. In addition, pouched baby food is probably more nutritious than jarred foods (more on this below).

But not all brands of pouched baby foods–even the organic ones–are Good Stuff. In fact, we found only four brands that we can definitively recommend, which we’ve listed above.

Read on to learn how to read pouched baby food labels, the concerning contaminants you won’t see on labels, and which brands are Okay Stuff if you aren’t able to find the Good Stuff.

My Favorite Baby Food Pouches

I’m partial to White Leaf Provisions baby food pouches because they are biodynamic in addition to being organic. You’ll read more about this brand below, under “The Good Stuff.”

White Leaf Provisions Organic Baby Food Pouches

The Problems with Baby Food Pouches

Baby food pouches offer convenience, and I think they also offer a solid option for nutritious food for babies and toddlers. But pouched baby foods aren’t without drawbacks and concerns.

  • The biggest issue with baby food sold in pouches rather than glass jars is that is that the plastic pouches can not be easily recycled . All of the brands we reviewed use the same basic materials for their pouches, which is a combination of BPA-free polypropylene and foil. Fortunately, polypropylene seems to be the safest type of plastic , but that fact that you can’t really recycle it is obviously a big problem.
  • There are other potential downsides to pouch-feeding, including that it may inhibit chewing and even normal speech development . That said, I wouldn’t worry too much about this as long as your child has ample opportunity to eat finger foods in a variety of textures.
  • The issue of heavy metals in baby foods–while not unique to pouched food–is hugely concerning, and we covered this in depth here . (The one sentence story is: In 2020, the Subcommittee on Economic & Consumer Policy reported that arsenic, lead, and cadmium were present at problematic levels in many brands of organic baby food.) The big takeaway is to avoid rice-based baby food and anything with fruit juice concentrate, but we will also cover metal contamination in our review of the brands below.

The Upsides of Baby Food Pouches

Besides the convenience factor, pouched baby food has some advantages over traditional jarred baby food, including:

  • According to the companies that use them, plastic pouches better protect flavor and nutrients, and require lower, shorter heat times.
  • Pouches are free of BPA, whereas the lids of jarred food may contain BPA .
  • Pouches are roughly ten times lighter than classic glass jars, so they require that much less energy to produce and ship.
  • While pouches cannot be recycled, they use 75 percent less materials than traditional baby food containers.

A Non-Pouch Baby Food We Love

little journey fruit pouches

Amara is the only brand to freeze-dry whole, organic ingredients and then pulse them into powder to make baby food. Amara’s blends don’t use high heat processing, which also results in a lower-sugar final product.

Amara’s packets can be re-hydrated with water, breast milk, or formula, and it’s amazing to see them turn to a puree that retains the natural taste and texture of the whole ingredients.

All Amara suppliers must meet third-party federal requirements for heavy metals, and none of Amara’s blends contain rice.

We also love that Amara’s packets are lightweight, making them less of an environmental burden, and that they are more affordable than pouched baby food.

Check out Amara here

How We Ranked Baby Food Pouches

little journey fruit pouches

What follows is our ranking of baby food pouches–some are Good, some are Okay, and others should be avoided entirely, and you’ll find these in our Bad Stuff and Sneaky Stuff sections.

The Good Stuff brands are the ones that are not only organic and nutritionally superior, but also those that offer some form of independent testing or certification to prove that they are not contaminated with heavy metals.

The Okay Stuff category is home to the brands that we would basically feel fine feeding to our babies, especially if it wasn’t their sole source of food. These brands didn’t make the cut for Good Stuff because either they lack certifications or independent testing or because they contain non-whole food ingredients–such as fruit juice concentrate or some kind of “flavoring.”

The Bad Stuff and Sneaky Stuff brands are ones that we would not recommend buying, due to either sub-par ingredients or contamination concerns. It’s worth noting that my boys both grew up eating Sneaky Stuff pouches since none of the Good Stuff brands existing even five years ago!

There are also several brands from which that we could not obtain sufficient information to determine whether they contain concerning levels of heavy metals or not. These include Peter Rabbit Organics , Ella’s Kitchen , Trader Joe’s , and Whole Foods 365 pouches.

White Leaf Provision s

This is our very favorite baby food–which even older kids love! It’s super clean and even better than organic (although it IS organic), because it’s also Biodynamic.

Biodynamic farming is adamantly opposed to genetic modification organisms (GMOs) in agriculture, gardening, and food processing. International biodynamic standards forbid the use of any GMOs and ingredients, including animal feeds, that would never occur in the natural world.

little journey fruit pouches

These pouches of baby food have  always  been tested for heavy metals, not just since the issue got so much attention. Cerebelly pouches are Clean Label Certified, and our team’s Dr. Hopkins has vetted this certification process as sufficiently robust.

Cerebelly’s founder is a neurosurgeon who casually also has her PhD, and these blends were developed to enhance brain development, with ingredients like maitake mushrooms and chlorella.

little journey fruit pouches

Holle Bio-Organic

Holle is a new addition to this list, because we are now able to get it in the United States! Unlike the FDA, the EU sets standards for heavy metals in baby food.

We also love that Holle’s pouches are made with no purees or fruit juices–just whole fruits and veggies. Their are no additives or flours–grains include whole oat or spelt.

Finally, Holle is also made with ingredients that are not only organic but also biodynamic.

Biodynamic farms are built to integrate every living organism within the system to maximizing the health and vitality of the farm’s every aspect. A biodynamic farm aims to produce everything on the premises, including seeds, fertilizers, natural control agents for pests, and even the feed for livestock.

little journey fruit pouches

Once Upon a Farm

What makes the Once Upon a Farm blends unique is that they are cold pressed to lock in the nutrients. The high-pressure processing makes Once Upon a Farms superior to basically every brand in terms both nutrition and freshness.

Although these pouches need to be refrigerated, they are fine at room temp for four hours, so they still work on the go.

These fruit and veggie blends are made from organic, simple ingredients. They use whole produce and don’t add any sugar, even in the form of “fruit concentrate.”

Once Upon a Farm is Clean Label certified.

little journey fruit pouches

Serenity Kids

This line of Paleo-inspired baby food uses organic vegetables and grass-fed and pasture-raised meats. Serenity’s blends were designed to mimic the macro-nutrients found in breast milk, meaning they have a similar ratio of fats, proteins, and carbs.

All Serenity blends are free of hormones, antibiotics, GMO’s, gluten, fillers, grain, dairy, corn, allergens, eggs, and nuts. Serenity Kids is verified by the Clean Label Project, which means their products are tested for over 200 different contaminants, including heavy metals, glyphosate, agrochemicals, and plastics.  Use code GIMME15 for 15% off.

Also, Serenity Kids they will refund your money, no questions asked, if your kid doesn’t like the pouches you buy!

Gerber Organics  pouches are okay if they contain  just  the fruit and veggies on the front of the package. But you need to label-read, because the Banana Smoothie flavor, for instance, contains banana concentrate rather than pure bananas, as well as “vanilla flavor” instead of just vanilla extract. I am giving Gerber enough points to bump their organic pouches to Okay Stuff because they were the cleanest brand in terms of heavy metal contamination in the 2020 Congressional Report.  For each of the specific heavy metals listed, the examples of Gerber ingredients’ metal levels appear relatively low compared to the other manufacturers.

Little Spoon Smoothie Pouches   are new to the market and I like that they contain some nutritional powerhouses like tahini, chia seeds, and chickpeas. This is admittedly nit-picky, but I’m calling these Okay Stuff instead of Good Stuff because they use oat flour instead of actual oats in a few of their blaends, and because I can’t get any information on heavy metal testing.

Gerber  is maybe the only brand that makes a non-organic pouch, so I’m calling that Bad Stuff. (Note that Gerber organic pouches are actually Okay Stuff–see above!).

GoGo squeeZ  has a few organic options, even those contain concentrates in place of real fruits. Some of their blends even contain cane sugar, and they make no claims about purity from heavy metals. They also contain rice flour, natural flavors, and pea protein isolate. This brand is the worst of every brand we reviewed.

Sneaky Stuff

Beech-Nut  went organic six years ago, and they make some nutritious blends that contain just mixed fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, the 2021 Congressional Report revealed that Beech-Nut continued to use ingredients after internal testing found them to have very high levels of a variety of heavy metals, including arsenic, lead, and cadmium.

Earth’s Best ‘s parent company, Hain, was called out in the 2021 Congressional Report for setting its own dangerously high heavy metal internal standards, and then routinely accepting ingredients that surpassed these standards. In addition, even their simplest flavors (pears, for instance) are fortified with all sorts of stuff, including  zinc sulfate , and  citric acid .

HappyBABY , under the parent company Nuture, makes pouches that contain nutritious blends of vegetables and grains, and high quality proteins like wild Alaskan salmon. I would like to give them credit for testing for mercury, but the 2021 Congressional Report revealed that their test data shows finished food products with as much as 10 ppb of this neurotoxic (the recommendation is that it should not exceed 5 ppb). Nuture is also called out in the report for claiming that they used a standard of 50 ppb for lead, and then later submitting test documents showing that their standard was actually of 100 ppb.

Noka  isn’t marketed for babies, but a lot of you asked about this brand. Noka is organic and I love that their pouches are hearty with things like nut butters included. Unfortunately, Noka pouches contain non-whole-food ingredients, like brown rice protein, natural flavors, and sunflower lecithin.

Plum Organics  refused to comply when asked to submit heavy metal testing data to the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy in 2019, which makes them default Sneaky Stuff. Plum claims that they “responded quickly to their questions and never refused anything requested of us.” Also, it’s a little sneaky that the “grains” in these blends are actually grain flours (i.e., millet flour, oat flour, etc.) Some of Plum’s other toddler snacks contain sugar. (Note that Plum is owned by Campbell.)

Parent’s Choice  is another brand that didn’t cooperate with the investigation into heavy metals in 2019. A 2021 lawsuit claims that “The Subcommittee found [Parent’s Choice’s] lack of transparency greatly concerning, fearing that they might be obscuring the presence of higher levels of toxic heavy metals in their baby food products than their competitors’ products.”

Sprout Foods  faces a class suit in the state of California, USA, for “negligent, reckless, and/or intentional practice of misrepresenting and failing to fully disclose the presence of dangerous substances in its baby foods.”

Was I living under a rock?? I had no idea about these heavy metal reports and thought I was doing good when I offered my twins pouches….plum organic are their favorites. They are 3 now but I wonder what kind of heavy metal load they have. I didn’t hear anything about this in any of the mom groups either.

What about mamma chia pouches?

What do you think of Safe Catch brand, for fish to give to babies eating solids?

hello. My baby is about to start food in a month. The recent toxicity report of baby foods is obviously very disconcerting. Are there any safe ones out there?

What do you think of the Love Child pouches?

Meghan Avatar

Hi, I use the Earth’s Best pouches because they are the only ones I can find (although I will now check out Beech Nut) that have options that are just veggies, versus a mix of veggies and fruit, so there is about 10 grams less sugar in them. On the package the only ingredients listed are the two veggies and water. Are you saying that the other additives are in there but not required to be listed on the packaging? Thanks!

Batia Lavi Avatar

Most pouch ingredients mention “fruit puree” and “vegetable puree” instead of whole food, which means the brand buys the food as pureed and then create their own flavor mix. All of that cooking and recooking and pasturizing must kill most of the nutrients and turn the food to sugar concentrates, any research on the actual benefits in the food?

Julia Wilkinson Manley Avatar

Our baby is on a keto-like diet for seizure control. Do you happen to know of any trust-worthy low carb packets? The Serenity Kids is likely the closest on your list, but I didn’t look at the label. Would be helpful to have packets I can easily stash in the diaper bag for emergencies or for days when I’m stressed to the max.

Another great thing about Once Upon a Farm is that they are partnered with Terracycle so you can order a postage paid return envelope from their site to return the used containers for them to recycle!

I think this page needs to be updated in light of recent testing by Consumer Reports that found unacceptable levels of heavy metals in jars and pouches in most baby food, including organic ones. Here is the link to the report: https://www.consumerreports.org/food-safety/heavy-metals-in-baby-food/

I personally and tossing all my pouches, jars, and teething biscuits.

Generally, the ones highest in concerning metals/arsenic are those with rice or rice powder, sweet potatoes, and apple juice.

What are your thoughts on the most recent study? Every day is a new worry.

What do you think of the added vitmain E in Plum Organics Mighty 4 Tots? It says 30 percent. I know too much vitamin e can be toxic and my one year old is on toddler formula and sometimes has 2 of these a day

Hi, what are your thoughts on Little Spoon foods? I think they are rather new?

Have you seen this new study that came out about baby jar foods and pouches as well as toddler snacks? It’s called the Clean Label Project. It’s changing the way I offer all snacks to my 2 year old!!

Has this guide been updated? I too am a big fan of this website, and would love some guidance on navigating the puree pouch world in light of these recent studies. Thank you!

Hi, do you think your reviews of baby foods including puffs will change since the news story broke yesterday about foods containing BPA and arsenic? Sprouts and Happy Baby were on the list which has me in a panic because we feed our 8 month old the happy baby puffs and I have looked at their purees a few times.

Cynthia B. Avatar

Thank you so much! I love coming to this site for suggestions on what’s safest for my baby. It’s so hard to find the “good stuff” with all these brands out there all claiming all to be “good” for your little one. I came across this short article though, and got concerned since “Sprout” is one of the brands listed on this post: http://newjersey.news12.com/story/36679736/study-most-baby-food-products-test-positive-for-arsenic

I too found once upon a farm and would live your thoughts. It’s cold pressed, organic, no added sugars and they list the farms where the ingredients are from. It seems great! Please let me know what you think.

Seeing you are so concerned about plastics touching your child, I hope you cloth diaper and with only natural material diapers. Do you allow your child to touch toys, spoons, put anything at all in his mouth (including things made to be chewed on)? Those things are likely all plastic or have some sort of chemical on it. You also stated that the pouches aren’t recycled but there are a few brands of recyclable ones out there for making your own. Pouches are just the latest fad. It’ll go in and out several times over the years. Just like BLW will and like breastfeeding has. Everything that’s good for us today is bad for us next week. Some is science becoming more advanced and others is just philosophy/opinion.

Tobi Rubin Avatar

What do you think of the Happy Baby adult product line, SHINE ORGANICS, for infant/toddlers?

On their website they actually have a link to Happy Baby under the FAQ that asks if kids can enjoy Shine Products. To me, despite not being a full meal with protein and whatnot, the Shine pouches seem a lot healthier than the Happy Baby ones. I have fed my girl them when she opts out of eating dinner – which generally is just what I eat. I figure at least she is getting some good stuff from these pouches?

Also, there is a relatively new line, Once Upon A Farm, that is Cold Pressed. I bought a box and they seem like a really great option for days when I don’t want to cook a super baby friendly healthy meal. Thoughts on this brand?

Hi there! Thanks for these suggestions. This guide is due for an update and we will include both of them when we do this.

I’m getting ready to start my LO on stage 1 foods. Which brand do you prefer for being organic, non-gmo (if possible), bpa free. I’d prefer to use jars over pouches.

Any advice would be apperciated!

Here is where I’ve written about baby food (although the page is in need of an update! https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/safe-product-guides/jarred-food/ )

I heard that Plum Organics food and pouches are made in China. Does this impact your reviews at all?

Stacia Goldberg Avatar

Hi! What are your thoughts on the frozen Yummy Spoonfuls pouches? I know you listed the plastic container ones as good stuff. We bought a few at Target. My husband usually makes our baby food but we like to have some easily accessible ones for leaving the house and stuff. We use the clear Happy Baby ones sometimes as well. Thanks!

Maia James Avatar

Frozen Yummy Spoonfuls is Good Stuff. We actually covered them in our review here: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/safe-product-guides/best-frozen-food/

Chelsea Nash Avatar

I’ve been reading about the dangers of aluminum and its connection to neurological diseases and disorders. My kids love pouches and we mainly buy Happy Baby, Peter Rabbit and Plum. It seems all pouches are made with both plastic and aluminum. I worry about the exposure to both. My kids usually eat 1-2 pouches per day! Do the exposure risks outweigh the positive benefits of feeding them organic fruits and vegetables via pouches?

The part that touches the food in those pouches is polypropylene, an inert plastic (as far as we know, anyway). I wouldn’t be overly concerned about it, but of course food served from glass would be preferable! I’d bet most kids (mine included) eat a pouch or two a day!

Sherry Avatar

What are your thoughts on reusable baby food pouches such as these ones? As far as I can tell they are made of PETE and HDPE.

https://www.amazon.ca/Reusable-Food-Pouch-Baby-Storage/dp/B01CC4P8XU/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1467810911&sr=1-2

I am leary of any type of plastic, sometimes I feel like unless I live in the middle of nowhere and live like a cave person I can’t completely avoid plastic. But if I can use the “safer” plastics when I truly have a need for something to be convenient then at least there’s minimal exposure right?

I have also came across these ones but not sure if they are made of the same materials.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00TXBSHBQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=A36G20Z4GFRPDY&psc=1 https://www.amazon.ca/Yummi-Pouch-Brights-Reusable-Pouches/dp/B00E5LOPB0/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1467814816&sr=1-1&keywords=yummy+pouch

The Healthy Planet pouches look fine to me. I wouldn’t be concerned about those plastics. I’m not familiar with the other pouches. And I can’t seem to find any listed ingredients, so I can’t really make a call on those. But I’ll add them to the list.

Shana Zubicek Avatar

I am letting every mother out there know about the horrible time our family has had. At a year old we had our oldest daughter tested for lead and she came back at 9! After a year and a half of pulling hair and having everything thrown away and tested, our second daughter had a lead level if 7 soon after i started feeding her her sisters food pouches at 8 months. We stopped giving them and a month later Alanys is 3.8 and we are waiting for test results on Elsa. We used all sorts of different brands, but just the organic ones. I suspect it is the foil packaging. Please let others know. These need to be taken off the market.

Amy Avatar

GoGo Squeez does have USDA Organic applesauce and organic fruit/veggie pouches and they are BPA Free. Just wanted to let you know.

Yes! I recently noticed that they’ve gone organic:). Will update when we revise this Guide!

Lien Phuong Avatar

I don’t see GoGo Squeeze in the revision. Thoughts?

Irene Avatar

I’ve read a lot of your blog posts now about avoiding plastics #3, 6 and 7. I recently purchased a Vitamix thinking, “Yay, great way to get organic greens into my very picky toddler’s diet and wean him off those pouches!” However, while Vitamix claims the pitcher is BPA free, I recently looked inside the pitcher to see a #7 stamped inside. *Angry face*. So now what do I do? Ditch the Vitamix or don’t make green smoothies every other day? Stick with a glass low power blender?

I know, this is really annoying, isn’t it?! Some of us here at Gimme the Good Stuff do use a Vitamix. Just keep hot stuff out of it, and transfer it to glass quickly!

Kary Avatar

I bought a stainless steel jar made by Waring that fits perfectly onto the Vitamix. We use it for any hot stuff we’re blending (soups or coffee drinks). We still use the Vitamix plastic one for cold smoothies though – it’s nice to be able to see how well things are blending and I think the Vitamix blades are better.

Michelle Avatar

My son loved the pouches, starting at around 9 months when he became interested in foods other than breastmilk, I think also because of the sucking factor, but they almost all contain either lemon juice or ascorbic acid as a preservative and we knew ascorbic acid was a reflux aggravator, but also lemon juice upset his stomach as well. I stopped giving him the pouches by 1year, because they seemed to be compounding his stomach/reflux issues which we had worked so hard to reduce. They are convenient, but like most snack foods, I don’t think they are particularly good to be eating on a regular basis, even if they are organic, etc. And fyi, 90% of the ascorbic acid that is produced is made in china and made by synthesizing it from sugar. Any pouches that contain ascorbic acid should be avoided, even if they are organic.

kim Avatar

A comment regarding your baby led weaning note – it is really great, even with the process being messy and slow. However, that being said, we still have a toddler who loves his pouches, the convenience is quite great, and sometimes it’s the ONLY way he will eat his vegetables. My only complaint with a lot of the pouches you mentioned in the ‘good stuff’ above is that few make vegetable-only flavored pouches. Aside from the starter ones, most of the blends always have fruit to sweeten it. While I’m not a Gerber person, their organic veggie pouches are often the only ones I can find with no added fruit! Any thoughts? PS… love, love, love your website!!

Thanks, Kim! I’m sure the Gerber Organics ones are okay–this Guide is in need of an update, so when we do so, I’ll be sure look for veggie only brands. Thanks for your comment!

mary Avatar

I know you love your baby, but have you tried to live on a diet of these foods…….I mean really survive on them???

they give me reflux……..more and a whole box of Magnum ice cream…..

something is not right.

Rachel Avatar

We noticed that our local Walmart has a Parent’s Choice pouch for only 88 cents. Know much about these and if you’d recommend them? My 1 year old LOVES pouches and it comforts me to know he is getting some food down.

Hi Rachel! I would not recommend this brand as it isn’t organic. Thanks for reading and writing!

Sara Avatar

Parent’s Choice now has organic pouches.

Katy Leute Avatar

Yes! That’s why I was researching them too. It would amazing if there’s nothing sneaky in it because it’s so cheap!!

LP Avatar

Love your site!

You may want to check out a company called Love Child Organics. As far as I can tell, they are the most “pure” of the baby food brands. Their starter purees have only one ingredient and don’t even include ascorbic acid or lemon juice. None of their snacks for babies under a year old have any added sugar or salt (they have great teething biscuits made with ancient grains).

I think the brand is more widely available in Canada, but I have friends in the US who still find it no problem.

Thanks again for all the great product advice!

Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely look into this brand when I update this Safe Product Guide!

11 Best Organic Baby Food Brands, According to Moms and Babies

  • by Admin Account
  • March 11, 2022

Whether your child is at stage 1 or stage 3, there's something here for them.

As a busy parent, time isn’t always on your side. Making   baby food from scratch   can be stressful and time consuming, especially when it comes to appeasing picky eaters. Luckily, there are several pre-made organic baby food options that take the guesswork out of feeding your child.

Since the National Organic Program of the USDA has developed   strict rules and regulations   that govern USDA certified organic foods, those carrying the USDA organic seal cannot contain GMOs or any artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. And   certain studies   show that organic fruits and vegetables have significantly more antioxidant polyphenols than conventionally grown produce. Encouraging an abundance and variety of fruits and vegetables at all ages is key, but organically grown produce can provide some additional benefits without the GMOs or preservatives.

And speaking of ages, our nutrition experts point out that baby food stages aren’t standardized but there are general guidelines that many brands utilize.

As a general rule of thumb, Stage 1 foods generally consist of a single ingredient purees and are ideal for babies ages 4-6 months. Stage 2 foods are best for babies ages 6-9 months and start to incorporate more than one ingredient. Stage 3 foods are for babies 9-12 months, and they feature a lot of different textures and new flavors. Stage 4 foods are for babies at least one year of age and typically indicate that table food can be introduced.

A note on heavy metals in baby food:   If you’ve heard about   concerns regarding heavy metals in baby food, it’s important to know that they are naturally occurring and enter the food supply from natural sources like soil, water and air. It is nearly impossible to completely avoid these metals, but parents can minimize the risk by feeding their baby a variety of foods. Opt for grain-based cereals and snacks instead of rice-based options and be sure to limit fruit juices. Our experts say you can and should keep giving carrots and sweet potatoes because they contain important nutrients, but given that they grow in the ground, they may naturally contain higher levels of heavy metals so be sure to serve them along with other fruits and vegetables.

To make sure you're giving your child the very best, we put several brands to the test through a panel of kids, moms and editors to see which organic baby food products are the best for your baby. We’ve also included information on what measures each brand is taking regarding minimizing heavy metals in their products. Here are the   best organic baby foods of 2022 :

Organic Fruit & Veggie Blend Baby Sampler

ONCE UPON A FARM

This line of baby food pouches and cups was co-founded by Jennifer Garner. Every ingredient is certified USDA organic and sustainably grown.   Our nutrition pros say that Once Upon A Farm sets themselves apart from the other brands we reviewed due to the cold-pressed process that the blends utilize to lock in the nutrients, taste and texture of the farm-fresh ingredients.   Testers said their littles loved the flavors, and one parent said she liked that the packs needed to be refrigerated, which made her feel that they were "very high quality."

Once Upon A Farm are the first baby and kids food brand to receive the   Clean Label Project Purity Award , a third-party nonprofit that tests for over 400 environmental and industrial toxins including heavy metals. Their new Advanced Nutrition Blends for baby has the 1,000 Day Promise from the Clean Label Project too which is the first U.S. certification that requires heightened nutritional elements and regulation of heavy metals, toxic compounds and melamines found in baby food.

Organic Baby Puree Pouches

Founded by a practicing neurosurgeon, this line of organic baby food from   Cerebelly   focuses on incorporating 16 brain-supporting nutrients into every product, ranging from pouches to snack bars. Our dietitians point out that the organic products are veggie forward and contain no added sugar.   Parent testers   appreciated the “thoughtful and healthful combinations,” and babies loved them too.   They also offer a line of savory bone broth purees with 5 grams of protein in every pouch for children 11+ months.

Cerebelly pouches have the   Clean Label Project Purity Award,   which means they have been tested for over 400 contaminants including heavy metals, chemicals, plastics, pesticides and more.

Organic Fruit Puree

little journey fruit pouches

The beloved European baby food brand is now bringing their organic products to the U.S. Holle USA offers organic fruit and veggie pouches, and more.   Our nutrition pros appreciate that the brand utilizes raw ingredients grown to biodynamic and organic standards.   Parents love that the pouch packaging is made without BPA.

In addition to meeting European standards, Holle USA Organic Fruit and Veggie Purees are also FDA approved and follow a strict set of agricultural standards to meet the Demeter certification. Demeter-certified products guarantee that the ingredients used are grown on regenerative farms that prioritize soil health, GMO-free agriculture, respect for the nature of animals, biodiversity, ecological responsibility, and social responsibility.

Pouches & Jars

HAPPY FAMILY ORGANICS

Mom Shazi Visram founded Happy Family Organics to provide a wide variety of healthy organic baby food options to parents.   Our nutrition pros love that the brand offers 100% USDA organic pouches and jars (including a new organic and regenerative line), as well as hearty meal pouches for Stage 2, and organic oats cereal.   Both the pears, zucchini and peas pouch and the apples, guavas and beets pouches were a hit. As your child continues to grow, they can enjoy even more Happy Family Organics products, including teethers, puffs, crackers, veggie straws, meal bowls, made simple mixes and more.

In the absence of science-based federal standards for all products, Happy Family shared with   Good Housekeping   that they set internal goals to reflect the FDA guidance that does exist. They also implement best practices from industry experts, and press their suppliers to find farms around the country and the world with the lowest possible presence of these elements, which are naturally occurring, in the soil.

Organics Pouches

Plum Organics shared with   Good Housekeeping   that Sun-Maid conducted rigorous due diligence on the Plum Organics brand before their recent acquisition. They continue to work with the subcommittee – as well as the industry at large – to address these matters and ensure Plum Organics remains the very best food from the first bite. "We are actively evaluating our processes and products to create the best possible baby food options," a spokesperson from Plum Organics told us.

Little Journey Pouches

little journey fruit pouches

Your favorite supermarket ALDI is at it again with their line of Little Journey baby pouches and snacks. Our nutrition pros love that the pouches are all 100% USDA organic and boast delicious and nutritious combinations for your baby. As your child continues to grow, they can enjoy Little Journey munchers, yogurt bites and puffs.

Moms loved the price point on these Little Journey Packets and that they have no artificial colors or flavors, which are some of the many reasons why ALDI-exclusive Little Journey baby and toddler essentials have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal.

Some of the pouches are even made with whole milk yogurt. Pro tip from one of our moms: Her 8-month-old doesn't normally like any fruit, but she mixed the apple blueberry Little Journey packet in her baby’s cereal to sneak some in and it was a hit.

Organic Baby Food Pouches

Our nutrition experts rave about these organic plant-based meals in powder form . The method Amara uses does not require repeated high heat processes. Just add water, formula or breastmilk to the mix and you have a healthy meal ready for your little one in seconds. Testers loved that the wholesome offerings were conveniently shelf-stable and featured unique superfood combos like   applesauce with maqui berry.

Organic Pouches & Freshful Start

little journey fruit pouches

Gerber shared with   Good Housekeeping   that they have taken many steps to reduce the levels of heavy metals in our products. Specific actions include rigorous testing of ingredients and finished products, continuously seeking ingredient sources with the lowest heavy metal levels, removing rice as an ingredient in their multigrain infant cereal and replacing whole grain rice with rice in their organic rice cereals. They also actively engage with FDA and other stakeholders to help establish strict standards for heavy metals in foods consumed by young children to minimize exposure.

Little Spoon

best organic baby food brands - Little Spoon Babyblends Baby Food

LITTLE SPOON

This subscription-based baby food service brings a unique twist to the traditional baby food we see on the market.   Our nutrition pros appreciate that the organic baby blends feature nutritious ingredient combinations including chia seeds, buckwheat, pumpkin seed and hemp seeds. Plus, they offer a line of small packs called boosters that act as nutritional supplements to mix into your baby’s food that our mommy testers loved. You can select from four different types of boosters that are carefully sourced with vitamins, minerals, probiotics and organic produce.

Their line of Babyblends purees are now Clean Label Project verified, which tests for over 400 industrial environmental contaminants including heavy metals and more.

Testers love that these USDA organic purees, finger foods and snacks are thoughtfully made and delivered right to your door. This organic meal delivery service for littles is free from the big nine allergens too. What's more, they offer options for stage 1 through 7 and snacks as well.   Our pros appreciate that Yumi features a guided program that introduces 3-4 new flavors each week, ultimately introducing 100+ different ingredients for a healthy eater.

Yumi is also a recipient of the   Clean Label Project Purity Award , a third party organization that tests for over 400 environmental and industrial toxins, including heavy metals.

TINY ORGANICS

These organic baby and toddler meals are conveniently delivered to your door and are packed with super nutrients.   Our nutrition pros and testers both love that Tiny products are free from the big 8 allergens.   Curated by a team of chef and neonatal nutritionists, the meals are made fresh and shipped frozen. Their new Tiny Beginnings product line has six different plant-based baby meal options to choose from and is created for 4-8-month-olds.

When sourcing ingredients, Tiny's team shared with GH that they require the farmers to provide heavy metal tests on the lots from the year prior and when they harvest the new lot. The team also does internal lab tests on specific ingredients to make sure it is within the brand's specifications. All ingredients are all sustainably sourced within the US from local farms to reduce carbon footprint and are USDA-certified organic.

Registered dietitians in the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab evaluated dozens of baby food products, specifically analyzing ingredient lists and nutrition labels. Our nutrition experts prioritized USDA Certified Organic options made with wholesome ingredients and free of artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. We also investigated efforts that the brands are making to minimize heavy metal exposure in their products. In addition to expert analysis, we recruited a panel of parents and little ones to provide real-life feedback on quality, variety, portion sizes, convenience, packaging and more. We formulated Little Bellies with the aim of nourishing young ones with only the finest organic baby food pouches, specifically designed for infants aged 4 months and above. Our commitment is to provide top-quality food, devoid of artificial additives, genetically modified ingredients, excess salt, and sugar – especially crucial during the crucial early stages of a child’s development.

Explore the Little Bellies’ assortment of organic baby food pouches tailored for babies aged 4+ months. Our organic baby food pouches encompass a diverse range of delightful flavours and textures. This selection aims to cultivate familiarity with food and foster a positive relationship with food in your little one’s culinary journey.

Introduction to Solids

Babies typically display signs of readiness for solids at 4-6 months. These signs include mouthing toys, good head and neck control, independent sitting, reduced tongue thrust, and a curiosity about food.

Versatile Options

Ease into the world of solids with our organic baby food pouches. Designed for different stages, our Little Bellies pouches offer delicately puréed fruit for babies from 4+ months and fruit & oat smoothies for those 6+ months. Begin the journey with natural, certified organic options free from added sugar, salt, artificial additives, colours, and GMOs.

Motor Skills Development

While baby food pouches offer convenience, healthcare experts often recommend spoon-feeding to support the development of motor and sensory skills. Spoon-feeding allows babies to engage their senses fully, promoting a slower pace of eating and an understanding of fullness and hunger cues.

Encouraging Independence

During feeding, respect your baby’s hunger cues. Allow them to lean in for a bite or even let them grab the spoon for a hands-on exploration of the food. This approach fosters a positive association with mealtime and encourages a sense of independence.

Certified Organic

Our organic baby food pouch purees prioritise your baby’s health. Certified organic, these purees boast the goodness of carefully selected ingredients sourced with your baby’s well-being in mind.

Natural & Wholesome

With a focus on wholesome nutrition, our pouches contain no added sugar or salt. Embrace the peace of mind that comes from offering your baby natural, wholesome and delicious formulas free from artificial additives and GMOs.

Transparent Sourcing

We believe in transparency. Our commitment extends to sourcing practices that prioritise quality, ensuring that every baby food pouch is crafted with the utmost care.

Variety in Flavours

Introduce a variety of flavours to your baby’s palate with our diverse range of organic baby food pouches. From delicately puréed fruit blends for the early stages to more complex fruit & oat smoothies as they grow, our offerings cater to evolving taste preferences.

Transitioning with Ease

For a seamless transition from breastmilk or formula, our baby food pouches offer a familiar sweetness, mirroring the taste babies are accustomed to. This transition is a natural step in their culinary journey.

Start with 1-2 tablespoons and offer more if your baby shows interest. Avoid pressuring them to finish a specific amount to prevent negative associations with food.

Engaging Mealtime

Transform mealtime into a sensory adventure. Encourage your baby to explore flavours, textures, and colours, fostering a positive relationship with food from the start.

Interactive Feeding

Turn feeding into a learning opportunity. Engage your baby with a spoon, allowing them to touch, smell, and see the food. This interactive approach supports motor skills development and a holistic understanding of mealtime.

Educational Resources

For additional insights on introducing solids, explore our guide “ Introducing Solids to a Baby: A Guide for Parents .” If you’re balancing breastfeeding or formula with solids, our resource “ Working Together: Breastfeeding and Solid Foods ” offers helpful tips on a harmonious combination.

We are committed to providing a nourishing and enriching start to your baby’s culinary journey, ensuring every spoonful is a step towards healthy growth and development.
