The Magic Water Circuit in Lima

Lima’s Circuito Mágico del Agua (Magic Water Circuit) opened in 2007 after a hefty investment of US$13 million. Built within the Parque de la Reseva, a historic 19-acre (eight hectare) park, the series of 13 illuminated fountains has since proved a successful addition to Lima’s many attractions .

The Record-Breaking Circuito Mágico del Agua

Upon its construction, the Magic Water Circuit made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest water fountain complex in a public park. That in itself is quite impressive, but chuck in a series of really quite spectacular fountains and you have a destination that will keep kids happy and bring quiet smiles to even the most cynical of adults.

There’s also an educational side to the complex, with informative installations covering water-related issues and other temporary displays (when I last went, there was an excellent exhibition of old Machu Picchu photos, most from the Bingham expedition).

Getting Wet in Lima’s Fountains

Not all the fountains are of the simple stop-and-stare variety — a few of them are interactive.

The Cúpula Visitable breaks you in slowly, giving you the opportunity to walk beneath a flowing dome of jets (Wetness Level 2). The Túnel de las Sorpresas is a 38-yard walkway through a tunnel of water (Wetness Level 3, depending on how much you’ve had to drink).

The real star of the show — in terms of sheer fun — is the ever-popular Laberinto del Ensueño (Maze of the Dream; see video below). Getting to the center of the “maze” is more a matter of timing than navigation; a mistimed stride can land you right on top of a suddenly spewing jet of water (Wetness Level 8, potentially).

ENTERTAINMENT TIP: If looking for fun at night, or to watch sports during the day, or even a taste of home, visit the Wild Rover Hostels Chain for great food, sports and beer! Entrance to their bars is free even for non-guests

Fuente de la Fantasía Water Show

The park’s showpiece fountain is the Fuente de la Fantasía (Fantasia Fountain). Each night, the 130-yard-long fountain bursts into life with a choreographed show of water, lasers and music. The show takes place three times a night, beginning at 7:15 pm, 8:15 pm and 9:30 pm. It’s a good way to end your stroll through Lima’s charming Magic Water Circuit.

The Marvelous Magic Water Circuit in Lima, Peru

Circuito Magico del Agua is the Largest Fountain in the World

The Circuito Mágico del Agua (Magic Water Circuit) is a series of illuminated water fountains in Lima, Peru . The concept doesn't sound terrifically exciting, at first glance. After all, illuminated water fountains are for kids and romantic couples, right? Most people, however, don't realize the scale of the thing. It's a public water fountain that Guinness World Records has already recognized as the largest in the world.

Seeing Is Believing

Having now visited the Circuito Mágico del Agua twice, it's easy to see why it's a perfect place to visit in  Lima with kids  and a frequent recommendation for even the most cynical of adult travelers. The entrance fee is very inexpensive, so it's no threat to your travel budget. The Circuit is open from 3:00 pm to 10:30 pm Wednesday to Sunday and the fountains are most impressive at night.

Parque de la Reserva and El Circuito Mágico del Agua

The Circuito Mágico del Agua is located within the Parque de la Reserva, a 19-acre (eight hectare) park inaugurated in 1929. Sandwiched between Avenida Arequipa and Paseo de la Republica, the park was transformed in 2007 with the completion of the Magic Water Circuit, a series of 13 illuminated fountains.

The Controversy the Circuito Mágico Courted

The Circuito Mágico project courted some controversy. Converting the historic Parque de la Reserva into a modern water fountain complex wasn’t universally popular, nor was the charging of an entrance fee to enter a public space. The construction cost -- a hefty US$13 million -- also raised a few eyebrows.

Entrance Fees Helped Fund Renovation

On a more positive note, entrance fee revenues from the fountain complex helped raised funds for the renovation of the historic Municipal Theatre of Lima, which was reopened in October 2010. As for the public’s reaction to the Circuito Mágico, it was soon evident that the park was a success; less than eight months after its inauguration, the Circuit had already received two million visitors.

The 13 Fountains of the Magic Water Circuit

Lima’s Circuito Mágico del Agua features 13 fountains, all of which are illuminated. Some of the fountains have interactive elements, so prepare to get wet. If you enter from the Avenida Arequipa side of the park, you’ll arrive at each fountain in roughly the following order:

The 13 Fountains

  • Fuente del Arco Iris (Rainbow Fountain): A series of parallel fountains of different heights, giving the impression of a rainbow
  • Fuente de la Armonía (Fountain of Harmony): A pyramid whose sides are formed by jets of water, giving the impression of a solid structure
  • Fuente Tangüis (Tangüis Fountain): A magical garden with fountains in the shape of flowers, named after Fermín Tangüis (1851 to 1930), a Puerto Rican agriculturist who developed a seed that saved Peru’s cotton industry
  • Cúpula Visitable (Walk-in Dome): Jets of water shoot upwards and inwards to form a dome, beneath which you can walk without getting wet -- unless someone places a hand or foot in the flow, spraying water everywhere
  • Fuente de la Ilusión: (Fountain of the Illusion): An elegant fountain with streams of water that could be going one way or another, and multicolored clouds of spray; located next to the statue of Antonio José de Sucre
  • Túnel de las Sorpresas (Tunnel of Surprises): A series of water arcs that creates a 38 yard (35 m) long tunnel of water through which you can walk
  • Laberinto del Ensueño (Maze of the Dream): Don’t let the dreamy name fool you: this is where all the action takes place. Can you make your way to the center of the circle, through the vertical walls of water that suddenly subside before shooting upwards? There’s a good chance you’ll get wet, so put your camera and cash in a plastic bag. Great fun!
  • Fuente de la Vida (Fountain of Life): A spiraling central structure from which various fountains emerge
  • Fuente de Los Niños (Fountain of the Children): Various fountains emerge randomly from an illuminated grid
  • Fuente de las Tradiciones (Fountain of Traditions): A previously existing fountain, modernized but incorporating traditional sculptures
  • Río de los Deseos (River of Wishes): A lengthy waterway with fountains along its course
  • Fuente Mágica (Magic Fountain): The park’s largest and most powerful fountain, shooting a vertical jet of water more than 87 yards (80 m) into the air
  • Fuente de la Fantasía (Fantasia Fountain): The 130-yard-long Fuente de la Fantasía is the park’s showpiece fountain. Three times a night, the fountain is used for a choreographed laser, water and music show

More Attractions in and Around Parque de la Reserva

The water fountains are obviously the main draw in Parque de la Reserva, but the Circuito Mágico del Agua also serves as an educational tool.

Lima's Water System

The Túnel de Exposición, which runs beneath Avenida Petit Thouars and connects the two halves of the park, contains a wealth of information about Lima’s water system. Here you can learn, among other things, where Lima’s water comes from, the trials faced in developing and maintaining the system, and its economic and environmental impact.

Additional Attractions Above Ground

You’ll also find exhibitions above ground, often displayed near the Fuente de la Ilusión and the statue of Antonio José de Sucre. During May 2012, for example, visitors could walk around a fascinating photographic display featuring old black and white photos of Machu Picchu (including those of the Hiram Bingham exhibition).

Nearby attractions include the Museo de Historia Natural (Natural History Museum) on Avenida Arenales and the large Parque de la Exposición about five blocks north of Parque de la Reserva. Peru’s national soccer stadium, the Estadio Nacional del Perú, is also a short walk north of the park (you can see it from within the Circuito Mágico del Agua).

Getting to Parque de la Reserva and Additional Details

The simplest way to get to Parque de la Reserva and the Circuito Mágico del Agua is to jump in a taxi . From Parque Kennedy in Miraflores, the cab fare should be around pretty cheap -- not too bad, especially if you go with a few traveling companions.

Alternatively, you can hop into one of Lima’s often-cramped minibusses and make your way along Avenida Arequipa until you reach the park. Another simple option is Lima’s Metropolitano bus system ; get off at the Estadio Nacional Station and you’ll be right next to the Parque de la Reserva. The main entrance is just off Avenida Arequipa.

The Magic Water Circuit

The Magic Water Circuit, although recently built, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city of Lima. It is an immense park that has thirteen fountains that offer a spectacle of colors, music and lights. Children are the happiest in this place that is already a symbol of the city. Learn how to go, how much it costs and more details about the visit.

All about the Magic Water Circuit

How to get there?

  • What to see

Price of admission

Hours of operation, more information.

The Magic Water Circuit is one of the most famous recreational spaces in Lima . It has architectural monuments, spaces for artistic exhibitions, green areas and, most strikingly, thirteen water fountains with a music show and colored lights.

In addition to the beautiful postcards offered by the light show (especially at night), the Magic Water Circuit is an ideal outdoor space to go with children. They enjoy entering the pools and having fun with the water jets. The highest jet reaches 80 meters.

The city of Lima, capital of Peru , has several parks of different size. This park is one of the largest in the city. It covers an area of eight hectares. It was designed by the French architect Claude Sahut under a neoclassical style. Inside there are architectural monuments as well as sculptures by Peruvian artists. In 1980 it was declared a Monumental Urban Environment of the city.

Each font has a name. The most famous are :

  • 1. The ‘Fountain with light show’.
  • 2. The ‘Fountain of Illusion’.
  • 3. The ‘Magic Fountain’.
  • 4. The ‘Fountain of Life’.
  • 5. The ‘Rainbow Fountain’.
  • 6. The ‘Fountain of Harmony’.
  • 7. The ‘Tanguis Fountain’.
  • 8. The ‘Children’s Fountain’.
  • 9. The ‘Fountain of Fantasy’.
  • 10. The ‘Fountain of Traditions’.
  • 11. The ‘River of Desires Fountain’.
  • 12. The ‘Visible Dome Fountain’.
  • 13. The ‘Fountain tunnel of surprises’.

The Magic Water Circuit is located in the center of Lima. It is part of the so-called ‘Parque de la Reserva’, located in the Santa Beatriz neighborhood in the Cercado de Lima district.

From the tourist district of Miraflores it is 5.6 kilometers down the Petit Thouars avenue. It is worth mentioning that it is located next to the National Stadium of Lima.

The Magic Water Circuit is crossed by up to three main avenues: a) Petit Thouars avenue, b) Arequipa avenue and c) Paseo de la República avenue .

To get there you just have to take any public transport that runs through these avenues. Most foreign tourists stay in the Miraflores district. From there you can take the ‘Blue Corridor’ buses (cost of 1 sol 50 cents).

The history of the Magic Water Circuit is related to the Exhibition Park, an immense public space for Lima families during the first decades of the 20th century. During the government of President Augusto B. Leguía (at the end of 1926) the construction of the Reserve Park began, a place full of green areas, sculptures and architectural monuments. The name of the park was in honor of the troop of reservists that defended the city in the battles of Miraflores and San Juan.

The park was completed in 1929, becoming one of the main public spaces in the city. Later, the park was improved with the construction of a trellis around the perimeter of the site. In 1980 the park was declared a Monumental Urban Environment. However, in the following years the Reserve Park gradually deteriorated.

In 2000 the park was reopened after a remodeling. Finally, in 2007, during the administration of Mayor Luis Castañeda Lossio, the ‘Magic Water Circuit’ was inaugurated . The investment was 13 million dollars, an amount that generated criticism in the population of Lima. The park holds the Guinness World Record for having the largest water fountains in one public place.

What to see?

Cybernetic water sources – The thirteen water sources are the main tourist attraction of the park. There are fountains to appreciate and take unique photos, such as ‘The fountain with light show’. There are also sources for fun for children, young people and people with a young spirit, such as ‘The children’s fountain’ or ‘The tunnel of surprises fountain’.

Ornamental fountains – In addition to cybernetic fountains, there are others that show sculptures and structures such as works of art built at the beginning of the 20th century. Highlights, for example, ‘The source of the indigenous women’, ‘The Seville source’, ‘The source of income to the reserve park’ and ‘The source of the loggia’.

Historical monuments – The park has historical monuments that represent facts and characters in the history of Peru. Many of them were built from the first decades of the 20th century. It should be noted: ‘La logia’ (Italian-influenced construction with neoclassical arches and columns), ‘El Fermín Tanguis’ (sculptures with pre-Hispanic motifs in honor of the Puerto Rican merchant who promoted the cotton industry in Peru), ‘El Sucre monument’ (sculpture in homage to the Venezuelan military hero of the famous Battle of Ayacucho) and ‘La casa Sabogal’ (architectural work with indigenous motifs made by the famous Peruvian artist José Sabogal).

Ecology – Despite being in the heart of Lima, an area contaminated by the thousands of cars that circulate through the streets of the city, the Magic Circuit of Agua has extensive green areas where it is possible to see ficus, ash trees, mimosa, molles, palm trees as well as various types of birds.

The entrance ticket has a cost of 4 Peruvian soles per person .

People with disabilities pay 2 Peruvian soles by presenting their CONADIS disability card.

The cost of parking services is 10 Peruvian soles (flat rate) for cars and 30 Peruvian soles for buses.

The opening hours are Monday through Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

From Friday to Sunday the opening hours are from noon to eight at night.

The park has an expo-tunnel that shows the history and attractions of the place in an interactive exhibition. There are also changing rooms, topics, toilets, lost property area and emergency exits.

In the Magic Water Circuit, cultural activities are usually carried out such as ‘Storytelling’, ‘Gastronomic fairs’, ‘Story shows’, ‘Sports activities’ and more .

For many people, the best time to visit this park is at night, as this is when the light show of the water fountains is best appreciated.

Children are the ones who enjoy this park the most. They often enter light sources where they inevitably soak up water. Try to bring a towel and extra clothes with you. Young people and people with a young spirit can also enter the sources.

Next to this park is the historic National Stadium of Lima, the sports venue where the Peruvian Soccer Team plays at home. Soccer lovers should not miss the opportunity to take a photo there.

The Magic Water Circuit in the Parque de la Reserva in Lima

  • City Center

The Parque de la Reserva was originally opened in 1929 to commemorate all the civilian reservists who fought in the defence of Lima during the War of the Pacific. But more than 65 years later Parque de la Reserva became one of Lima's most visited tourist attractions .

In May 2007 a water and light show called the Circuito Magico del Agua (The Magic Water Circuit) was inaugurated. The Magic Water Circuit has the Guinness Book record for the largest fountain complex in the world, displaying 13 distinct fountains and many are interactive. All of the fountains are illuminated at night, many with continuously changing color schemes. A colorful laser light program synchronized with classical and Peruvian music makes the fountains sparkle and shine as the water flows in unique patterns and shapes.
