A very common questions in my Paris Travel Group ( join here, it’s free! ) are about how to get around in Paris . But also, what is the best Paris Metro pass or travel card for the Parisian Metro.

And of course: how to use the Metro in Paris in the first place. I genuinely understand that public transportation in Paris can be confusing.

It was for me as well. But after living in Paris for more than 16 years, the Parisian Metro plan is imprinted in my brain, and I am here to help you out.

Salut, I am Lena – travel planning expert and parisienne since 2006 🩷

Hence, in this article, I am sharing everything you need to know to ride the Parisian Metro confidently, how to pick the best Metro ticket for your situation, and how to pay for the Metro in Paris.

Paris Metro Tickets: Easy Solution for Convenience:

Before explaining the Parisian Metro Ticketing System in all details, here’s the ticket option that suits the needs of most tourists. This is particularly handy if sticking to a strict budget isn’t your top priority, and you’re okay with possibly spending a few Euros extra for convenience and peace of mind.

  • Go to the RATP ticket counter and buy a Navigo Easy Pass for €2 (one pass per person)
  • Ask the clerk to top it up with a bundle of 10 tickets for €17.30. Alternatively, use the vending machines
  • Recharge with a bundle or single tickets if needed.
  • If you visit Disneyland, Versailles, etc., buy a destination ticket for €3 to €5

How to use Paris Metro

Being a traveler myself, I know how silly I feel when I don’t know how public transportation works in a foreign country. Believe me, I took a taxi or walked way more often than I dare to admit…  just because I couldn’t figure it out.

But I got you! I will help you out and share everything you need to know before you go to rock Paris Public Transportation services. Read on because this guide equ ips you with enough know-how to get around Paris without issues.

The Parisian Metro – The 3 Big DONT’s

In the following, I will explain everything you need to know to use the Parisian Metro, but let’s start with the most important: the top 3 things you should know to avoid a fine .

If a visitor complains about getting fined in the Parisian Metro, it’s usually because of one of these three mistakes:

  • They trashed their Metro ticket before they left the station
  • They bought a kid fare for a 10-year-old child – the reduced fare is only for children until 9!
  • If your ticket has a field for you to add your name and the date, do it. Otherwise, your ticket is not valid

Metro Paris Ticket Overview

Tickets and fares for Public Transportation in Paris

The first question everyone asks who plan to use the Parisian Metro is “What ticket do I need for the Paris Metro” ?

Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question, as it heavily depends on what your plans are.  For tourists, there are overall 3 tickets interesting. The single fare ticket, the day pass, and the week pass.

There are 4 different Metro ticket variations

  • the ticket+ paper strip (slowly phasing out since 2023)
  • Navigo Easy: a Paris Metro pass that serves as a support for single-fare tickets and day tickets
  • Passe Navigo Decouverte : a card that serves as support, mainly used for week and month tickets
  • Destination Tickets in paper strip form if you travel outside Paris (Disney, Versailles etc.)

Here’s a quick overview of the relevant ticket types and the support you need to use them

Single-fare tickets for the Metro in Paris

As you just learned, there are different ticket options for the Parisian Metro, the single-fare tickets are, however, the most standard option . You simply buy a ticket and validate one ticket per trip and person.

You can buy one single ticket, or top up your Navigo Easy Pass with a bundle of 10, which is cheaper.

All tickets are purchasable for different zones – the further you are moving away from Paris, the more expensive gets your ride.

Paris Metro Tap to Pay : Unlike in many other countries, you can’t pay for the Paris Metro directly with your credit card. You are required to obtain a Navigo Pass and to top it up with a ticket of your choice.

You can buy the tickets for the Navigo Pass with your credit card at the machines, of course.

How much does transportation in Paris cost? Know what to expect:

The good ol’paper strip – the classic billet

If you’ve been to Paris already, you probably remember these famous paper strips. Well, they are history. Since a few years – and then delayed due to a certain health crisis – they intend to phase them out .

At the time of writing, you can’t purchase them anymore in a bundle of 10, but might still use them if you have any left.

Single tickets to be used inside Paris are still sold, though. (It’s complicated and confusing, I know)

A numeric version replaces the paper strip. Either in the form of a travel card, or even by an app.

Paris Metro ticket - the most common Paris Metro Pass that will be decommissioned in early 2022 thoughin

The base ticket: the ticket+.

The base ticket for the Parisian Metro is a ti cket t+.  It costs €2,15 (1,73 € if you buy a bundle of 10) and is valid within Paris and all adjacent suburbs.

You can change Metro lines as often as you want, as long as you are not exceeding 2 hours and don’t leave the station.

You can purchase a single-ride ticket or a bundle of 10 on the ticket machines that you find in every metro station and load it on your Navigo Easy travel card.

Digital ticket+ Paris Metro Contactless

Since 2019 you can use single-ride and bundle tickets digitally. To do so, you need a Navigo Easy Card to charge your tickets.

You can easily load single rides or a bundle of 10. The latter is financially very interesting, as you save 20%. Hence, 10 rides are only €17.30, while you’d be charged €2.15 if you’d buy a single ride.

You can purchase the Navigo Easy card at the ticket counter or RATP info point at every Metro station. It costs 2€. To charge your card, you can either use the RATP App, the vending machine or you pay at the RATP ticket counter.

2024 Tip: Get the Bonjour RATP Paris App and top up your Navigo easily from your phone.

Good to Know: You can’t split the Navigo Easy Card up between several passengers. It’s always one card per person, and each person in your group needs their personal card.

How to use the Parisian Metro - public transportation guide for Paris

Are kids riding the Parisian Metro for free?

Only Kids under 4 are traveling for free on Paris public transportation. Kids of the age of 4 to 9 (not 3 anymore, and not yet 10) are eligible to travel at a reduced fare of 50%.

Reduced fares are also available as a bundle of 10 (carnet). Children need their own Navigo Easy Card.

Paris Day Travel Passes

You also have the option to purchase a Paris Metro day pass for the public transportation system.

This option allows you to take as many rides as you like within one day . The pass costs 8,45€ for zone 1-2 and is valid from 00-24h. Hence, if you buy a pass at 10 am, you can ride for free until midnight, not until 10 am the next day.

The day ticket is available with the Pass Navigo Easy and Navigo Decouverte.

The big advantage of a day pass is of course that you don’t have to think at all about any further costs when riding the Parisian Metro. But you should consider that it requires 5 rides for your day pass to be beneficial (compared to the 10 ticket carnet). From my experience, 5 rides are quite a lot for one day in Paris .

Paris Metro Mistakes - how to pay for paris metro

That’s because Paris is smaller than you may think. You will rarely need more than 3 or 4 rides a day.

If you consider purchasing a day pass, keep in mind that a trip to Versailles for example, requires a higher price class. At the time of writing, a day pass that includes Versailles costs around €13.

Week and tourist passes for the Paris Metro

If you stay a few days longer in Paris, a ticket that is valid for a few days could be interesting for you. You have two options:

Navigo Semaine – week pass

The Navigo Semaine cartd is a transport pass for 7 days and comes at a very interesting price. It allows you to travel in all 5 zones, hence even to the airport, to Disneyland and Versailles for only 30,00€.

But all good things come with a catch: the Navigo Semaine is not obtainable at all stations and is only valid from Monday morning to Sunday night. You can’t pick your dates.

As a tourist, you need to purchase a Passe Navigo Decouverte for €5 as support. However, you can also use the Navigo App .

Paris Visite Passe: Tourist Pass for Public transportation in Paris

The tourist pass covers a maximum of 5 days, and you can choose both, the dates and the zones that you require. Even though the flexibility is a strong point of the Paris Visite Pass, it is quite pricy .

Conclusion – which Metro ticket is the best for Paris?

Personally, I think single fare tickets are the best option . In a bundle, they are cheap. It’s very convenient that they require zero preparation, you can just buy them at the multilingual vending machine, and you’re good to go. Especially as you will rarely take more than 4 rides a day.

The single fare tickets are your best option if:

  • your accommodation is in Paris or adjacent suburbs ( click here to see a list of good budget hotels in Paris )
  • you plan to leave Paris only once or twice (for example to visit Disneyland or Versailles) on your own and are not taking one of the really well organized day tours from Paris
  • you are not having reduced mobility and walking is no problem

Compared to single-ride tickets, you need to take the Metro too often to benefit from a day pass. The cheap week pass is, however, not easy to get and not flexible when it comes to dates. The Paris Visite Pass is disproportionally expensive.

How to use the Metro in Paris?

Now that you know the essentials about the different Ticket options for your Paris vacation, let’s move on and see where to buy them, how to validate your tickets and how to ride the metro in the first place.

Where to buy the Tickets for the Parisian Metro?

You can purchase your Metro ticket at ticket machines that are available at every train, tram, and metro station. The ticket machines are multilingual . Most train and metro stations are also having a RATP info point, in case you require help.

Note : RATP employees are always wearing green uniforms. If someone approaches you without this uniform and offers help, watch out! It became a somewhat common scam to sell already used tickets to tourists. You can read more on Paris tourist scams here .

How to use the vending machines

If you are buying a ticket at the ticket machine, you will be prompted to choose your language first. Makes it easier, doesn’t it? However, while most machines are equipped with a touchscreen, some older models have a kind of role that helps you scroll through the menu.

The menu is pretty intuitive and self-explanatory. Many popular destinations like airports or Disneyland are preselected.

How to use Metro Paris

How to pay for the Metro in Paris?

When you are in Paris, you can’t pay the Metro directly with your credit card. You need to get a Navigo Pass, either a physical or a digital one on your phone, and top it up with the ticket of your choice.

You pay for the tickets at the vending machine with a credit card (American Express is not accepted) or cash. At the time of writing, you can’t pay for the Paris Metro contactless with your credit card. It requires your pin code.

How to validate a ticket on the Parisian Metro?

Buying your ticket is not enough, you need to validate it before each ride. If you are using a paper ticket, you need to pass it through the slot on the right side of the turnstile. However, in 2023, you won’t find many machines, that are still equipped with this form of validation.

If you own a Navigo Decoverte or Navigo Easy Pass, simply place your card over the purple reader to unlock the turnstiles.

If the flap doors are open, still validate your ticket. If you get controlled without a validated ticket, you’ll receive a fine.

Metro Ticket Machine - how to use the Paris Metro

Using the Metro in Paris with luggage or strollers

If you find yourself in a situation where it’s not possible to use the turnstiles or flap doors, don’t worry. Every metro station has a gate, that can be opened on request. Just don’t forget to validate your ticket though!

Is the Metro in Paris barrier-free?

Unfortunately, no. Not at all. Many stations were built more than 100 years ago and barrier-free access wasn’t on the radar of anyone back then. Some stations got reequipped with elevators during the last years, but it’s by far not enough to rely on the Metro as public transportation if you need barrier-free access.

Solely line 14 is completely barrier-free. However, the good news is, that Paris has a great bus network as well and all busses are barrier-free.

How to read the Metro plan?

At the first glimpse, the Metro plan does look indeed like a huge mess. But don’t worry, it’s actually quite easy to understand. Each Metro line crosses Paris from one side to another and back and consequently has a starting and end station. Just check in which direction your destination lays and you’re good to go.

For example : If you are at the station at Hôtel de Ville and you intend to visit the Arc de Triomphe, you need to take line 1 direction La Defense. If you want to visit the Bastille, you would need to board Metro 1 as well, but heading in the opposite direction of Château de Vincennes.

Pariser Metro Plan - abfotografiert

It helps a lot that each Metro stairway features a signpost that indicates exactly which station this very line and direction will serve. Each Metro line has its own platform – contrary to Berlin, for example, where several lines stop at the same platform.

A good piece of advice is to get familiar with the plan before traveling to Paris. Check which Metro station is the closest to your accommodation, how to get from there to the Eiffel Tower etc. and you will see that it quickly makes sense.

You can download the plan here . If you prefer the paper version, you can get one for free at every Metro station.

What changed since the Health Crisis? Is it safe to use the Metro?

While things are calming down, measurements and rules will probably change in the future again to respond better to the changing situation; however, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Face masks are not obligatory when entering any station, but are recommended (updated November 2023).
  • Some stations are equipped with sanitizer

Safety in Paris’ Public Transportation

I read very often that people are worried about their safety when traveling to Paris . One of the main concerns is getting scammed or robbed.

I can’t deny that there is a certain risk. Especially since a couple of years, reports of scams and pickpockets are rising. However, we should keep in mind, that the Parisian Metro transports more than 4 Million passengers per day. And only a small hand full experiences any issues at all.

Well, except for delays and technical problems, that’s another story.

Paris is a metropolis, after all. But did you know that Paris ranks just behind London and Malmö, Sweden in the international safety ranking?

I’d say the Paris Metro is safe. Every Parisian takes the metro at all times, often you’ll find the Metro fuller at midnight than at 3 pm and the passengers are not any dodgy weirdos but absolutely random folks.

metro travel tickets

There are still some things you should keep in mind:

  • take care of your stuff and be conscious about your belongings while traveling on the Parisian Metro. Don’t have your bag just above your shoulder, but hold the string. You don’t need to hold your bag like a maniac but show that you’re wary
  • and try to avoid using your phone. It can happen that someone grabs it and runs just at the very moment the doors are closing.
  • if there is a safety announcement about pickpockets, DO NOT check if your wallet is still where it should be. Someone might check for exactly this reflex and you happily tell the thief where he has to look for your treasures
  • don’t get distracted and forget about your belongings. I got my wallet stolen once; while I was trying to push a stroller with one hand while trying to hold a gate with the other.

Other means of public transportation in Paris

If you are traveling to Paris, the Metro is the most obvious public transportation to take. However, there might be many reasons why this is not possible or appealing to you. Luckily, there are other means of public transportation that belong to the RATP network.

Paris Metro how to

What does RATP stand for ? Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens , Autonomous Operator of Parisian Transportation. RATP is your point of contact and the operator of every sort of public transportation within the Paris region.

Which ticket do I need for public transportation that is NOT the Metro?

Luckily, there is no different ticket needed. No matter what kind of public transportation you choose, the ticket remains the same. It just might vary depending on the distance or the zones, but that’s about it. This applies especially to buses and trams.

Tickets for busses and trams in Paris

One ticket t+ is valid for 90 minut es while using buses and trams . You can transfer between both services, but you need to revalidate your ticket when boarding a new vehicle.

Exception: If you purchase your ticket on the bus, you can’t make a transfer. The tickets sold onboard are only for one bus trip without transfer.

update 2021 – you can buy your bus ticket by SMS now. Simply send an SMS with the text BUS+Number to 93100 , and you receive a ticket by SMS.

It costs 2,50€, and counts only for the bus trip, not for transfers. If you are on Bus 26 for example, send BUS26 to the number 93100, and you’ll receive your ticket on your phone.

Paris by bike - bike lanes in Paris

More public transportation in Paris

If you are traveling only in Paris, you have only the option to hop on a bus or Metro. If you venture a bit outside the capital, you have more options.

RER (Suburb train)

The RER is much like Paris Metro, but a little faster and with fewer stations. However, the RER is basically a suburban train that connects Paris with surrounding cities. If you want to visit Versailles for example, you would take the RER C, Disney is served by RER A.

If you are not using the Navigo Decouverte for all zones or a 5 zones day pass, make sure to purchase a ticket with the appropriate amount of zones or a ticket that indicated your destination.

Paris and its surrounding are divided into 5 zones. You need to purchase a ticket for all zones that you cross on your way. But don’t worry too much about it, if you are at a ticket machine, you can simply click on “Ticket Île-de-France” ( Billets Île-de-France ) and pick your destination. You will obtain a station-to-station ticket that covers automatically the appropriate amount of zones.

Paris by Bus

Busses are running everywhere: inside Paris, outside Paris, from Paris to suburb, and from suburb to suburb. The tickets are the same as for Metro, you need a Ticket t+. You can transfer with the same ticket from bus to bus or to tram, but not to Metro or RER, which would require a new ticket.

If you are not depending on getting around by bus (Busses are barrier-free), I’d recommend avoiding them during a short-term stay. Schedules and maps are rather complicated and due to the Parisian traffic, they can be really sloooow.

check our transportation guides by clicking on the picture

Noctilien Night Buses

To fill the gap between the last and first Metro/Tram/RER, night buses are operating in Paris and connecting the city with the greater Paris area. Noctilien busses are clearly the cheapest way to get home after a long night as you can board them with the usual ticket t+. Just keep in mind that your fellow passengers also had a long night out and might be everything but sober.

Taking the tram in Paris

The Tramway is relatively new in Paris and is built roughly as a circle around Paris, more or less parallel to the freeway. In order to board the tram, you need a ticket t+. With one validated ticket, you can transfer from tram to tram or from tram to bus, but you need a new ticket to transfer to Metro or RER.

Orlyval Skytrain

The Orlyval is the sky train that operates between the Orly Airport and the next RER Station Anthony. The one-way ticket costs 11,00€ if you purchase the Orlyval in combination with an RER ticket to Paris, it’s around 13€.

If you’re traveling in a group, it might be cheaper to take an Uber from the RER station in Anthony to Orly Airport for about 10-15€.

Metro & Trains during the Paris Olympics in 2024

In November 2023, it was announced, that for the month of July and August, when Paris is hosting the Olympic Games, the prices for public transportation will be augmented. Here’s what you can expect:

The Olympics are still a bit ahead and the Parisians are rather opposed to this rise in price. So the pricing might be subject to change. However, I will update this post as soon as I get new information. So, stay tuned!

FAQ: How to use the Paris Metro

You need to purchase the travel card Navigo at the station and load it up with the tickets of your choice. Alternatively, you can also get the App Île-de-France Mobilités that not only serves as a travel planner but also as a ticket device.

You can purchase your Metro ticket with a credit card, but your credit card can’t be used directly at the barriers to entering the Metro.

The Metro is as safe at night as by day and is always heavily used.

A Metro Ticket for a single ride costs 2,10 € in 2023. A bundle of 10 tickets costs 16,90 €.

You use the roll to scroll up and down the menu and pick the ticket of your choice. Most popular picks are single-ride tickets, bundles of 10, and destination tickets, where you choose your destination station outside of Paris. To charge your Navigo pass, place it on the purple field, so the machine can read it.

The popular cardboard tickets are currently phasing out. The process was delayed to to delivery delays of Navigo Cards, but at the time of writing, it’s moving on. Many stations are not equipped with paper ticket readers anymore and you can’t purchase them anymore at the vending machines.

You place your Navigo Carte on the card reader before the turnstiles and wait until it “beeps”. You can pass then through the turnstile or gate.

Pin it now – and find it back later!

Hey, I will be in Paris this year so perfect moment for this read! Thank you so much for all the helpful insights.

This is the kind of posts I like to read (and write), where you can get all the information you need to move around or plan something/your stay/etc before even getting there. Pretty good post, I may say.

thank you! 🙂

This was a very useful article! I’m definitely going to refer to this when we visit Paris

thanks a lot and I hope you can come to visit Paris soon 🙂

Shame on me I have not yet been to Paris. But, when I do, this will come in very handy. Public transportation is a minefield…

Oh my gosh, thank you! When I was in Paris with my husband, there were several times we were just baffled trying to figure out the system One of the things that tripped me up was RER. Because I couldn’t figure out what it was, we avoided taking it our first day – when it would have been better for us. Pinned this!

Thank you!!! Glad you find some value in it and sharing it around! 🙂

I must say Paris is one of the best cities for well-connected local transport. Since its so large in size, one does end up walking A LOT despite taking the metro or the bus from one spot to another. And not to mention the long distances between metro lines inside the stations 🙂 But its all very convenient. And enjoyable.

oh I am sure you talk about Montparnasse when thinking of long distances between Metro lines! We try to avoid that change by all means haha 😀

I will never get tired of reading about Paris. But all glitz and glamor of Paris comes with the super expensive transportation if hired privately. So, this post on public transportation and all teh tips you have mentioned ( especially the one about red and green indicators after parking the bike) would definitely help any one willing to explore the city on budget.

yeah, getting around privately is really expensive! We often use a mix of public transportation and Uber

A very useful post for everyone who want to get acquainted with the transport system of Paris city. You have listed dowm every single useful information regarding the topic and I can see how much effort you taken. I usually take up metros and buses rather than taxis as its very economical but as there’s Uber in the city I sometimes just go for it.

awww thank you for your kind words; I really appreciate it <3 the combination of public transport and Uber is perfect for us, too... especially when going out 🙂

It’s so nice that the metro runs late on the weekends! Also, good to know that buses are a bit complicated so not that great as an option for short term visitors. You’re article on all transport options is very thorough and complete! A great guide!

thank you <3 🙂

Any ideas about Accessibility for a wheelchair?

Hi Mona, sorry for my late reply, I simply missed your question 🙁 Paris is not really barrier free, unfortunately, and many (most) Metro Stations are not equipped with elevators. It’s probably easiest to get around by Bus. However, some Metro stations do have elevators, maybe this page helps: https://parisbytrain.com/map-paris-wheelchair-reduced-mobility-accessibility-metro-rer-bus-tram/ best, Lena

Navigating Washington, DC with Metro

Find out everything you need to know to ride dc’s world-class metrorail system, get a metro map, check operating hours, ride fares and more..

Washington, DC’s Metro   is one of the busiest public transportation systems in the country. Its expansive network of tunnels and above ground tracks connect all four quadrants of DC with suburban Virginia and Maryland. The system is heavily used by local commuters and it’s a popular, convenient and affordable way for visitors to DC to get around the region, now so more than ever. Metro has opened its new Silver Line extension, which allows riders to connect to Dulles International Airport and explore Loudoun County. Visit Metro's website for more information about the extension.

How does the Washington, DC Metro work? How do I plan my trip?

The Metro consists of six color-coded lines: Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Green and Silver. The lines are connected to each other via transfer stations and many Metro stops are serviced by more than one color. Each train car has an exterior electronic sign that marks the color and the direction of the train. Direction is indicated by the final station of that line.

Popular sightseeing Metro stops include the Smithsonian (Orange, Silver and Blue lines), Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan (Red line) and Gallery Place-Chinatown (Red, Green and Yellow lines). You can plan your trip and find the best route using Metro's Trip Planner .

Worried about internet connectivity while traveling on Metro? Currently, most Metro stations have free Wi-Fi .

How much are Metro fares and how do you use SmarTrip?

Metro fares are calculated by how many stops you travel and vary during peak and off-peak hours. During peak hours, most fares range from $2.25 to $6 per trip. During off-peak hours, fares typically range from $1.85 to $3.85.

Metro riders must pay via  SmarTrip card  or the  SmarTrip app on  iPhone and Apple Watch . SmarTrip cards are plastic, rechargeable fare cards that can be purchased by cash or credit at any Metro station or in advance on  wmata.com . You can calculate your fare between two stops using Metro’s  Trip Planner .

The SmarTrip app can be used anywhere the SmarTrip card is accepted, including rail, buses and Metro-operated parking lots. Metro is the first rail system in the U.S. to offer a full-service, touch-free payment option at every single stop. See below for more information about how to use SmarTrip in your Apple Wallet .

What are the Metro's hours and when does it close?

DC Metro trains run Monday - Thursday, 5 a.m. until 12 a.m.; Friday, 5 a.m. until 1 a.m.; Saturday: 7 a.m. until 1 a.m.; Sunday: 7 a.m. until 12 a.m.

Metro etiquette

The Washington, DC Metro serves thousands of commuters and visitors each day. Because the train system is so heavily used by busy local commuters, there are a number of unspoken rules that visitors should be aware of. If possible, you may want to ride at off-peak hours when the train system is much less hectic.

When riding the escalator, stand to your right, walk to your left. Standing in a twosome that blocks the left side is strongly (and often loudly) discouraged by your fellow Metro riders.

When waiting to board a train, let riders exit the train first before trying to board. If the train is particularly crowded and you are standing in a doorway, step just outside the train doorway to allow your fellow riders room to exit.

Another important note if the train is crowded: move to the middle of the car so others can board. You will have time to exit when you arrive at your stop.

During peak hours, trains arrive often. Don’t try to board a train that is too full. The automatic doors are very sensitive and if they can’t close, the train operator may offload the entire train because a door stopped working.

Each car usually has several seats for handicapped riders. Please don’t use these seats if there is a rider that needs to sit down.

Be sure and have your SmarTrip card out and ready to swipe when you go through the gate. Riders move through quickly and holding up the line is discouraged.

While the Metro can be a very busy place, most of your fellow riders are friendly and will point you in the right direction. There is also a station manager at each station. Don’t be afraid to ask if you have questions about navigating the Metro!

Now that you have read up on the Metrorail experience, learn about other ways to navigate DC. Check out the best transportation options  for getting around the District.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Barcelona public transport

Public transport Barcelona: Travel cards & tickets Overview and prices (2024)

Whether you need a single ticket, a 10-ride T-Casual or a “Hola BCN” travel card, here you will find up-to-date prices and information. This will help you find the right ticket for your stay in Barcelona quickly and easily.

Our tips for finding & buying the right ticket for your needs will save you time & money during your trip to Barcelona.

All public transport in Barcelona is organised under a single fare system, run by the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM). This makes it easier for passengers.

The main tickets for visitors and tourists

Here we present what we consider to be the most important tickets for visitors and tourists. For the sake of clarity, we have not included tickets for longer stays, such as monthly tickets, annual tickets, etc. in this list.

metro travel tickets

Tickets for public transport in Barcelona: the choice is huge. Choosing the right ticket before you travel will save you time and money.

1) Single Ticket

If you want to use the public transport occasionally.

The classic single ticket is the right choice if you only use public transport occasionally. With a single ticket you can, for example, travel on a TMB city bus or use the metro.

Single ticket – current price

The current price (2024) for a single ticket is EUR 2.55. You can buy it from ticket machines.

metro travel tickets

Single tickets for the local transport companies TMB and FGC in Barcelona. These tickets are not valid on the airport metro / railway lines.

Specific regulations of the single ticket in Barcelona:

attention

  • A single ticket does NOT entitle you to use the metro to/from the airport. You need to buy an extra ticket called an “airport ticket”, which costs €5.50 (one way) or €11 (return). Many visitors therefore buy the cheap day ticket “Hola BCN” (see below for details). This ticket includes metro or train service between the city center and the airport. In addition, it offers unlimited travel in all Barcelona’s public transport services for the period of validity (2-5 days).
  • Bus, metro and tram have different single tickets , which may not be valid in the other transport system. The 10-Ticket “T-casual” or the “Hola BCN” travel card will get you around this problem.

2) Travel card “Hola BCN!” for 2–5 days: cheap & easy to use

Unlimited travel on bus, metro, tram, suburban train + metro to/from airport.

The “Hola Barcelona Travel Card” is very popular with visitors to the city because it’s easy and convenient to use. You don’t have to deal with the fares and ticketing systems of Barcelona’s 5 transport companies.

One ticket, several names:

Until 2019, this ticket was called “Hola BCN! Now it has a new name: “Hola Barcelona Travel Card”. Apart from the name and the design of the cards, nothing has changed.

One ticket for almost all local transport:

The “Hola BCN” card offers you unlimited journeys using the metro (subway), city buses (TMB), tram, regional railway (Rodalies de Catalunya, Zone 1), urban railway (FGC, zone 1) and the funicular railway (Funicular de Montjuïc).

“Hola BCN!” Card – FAQ

Is there a discount for children or a children’s ticket for the Hola BCN Travel card? Children under the age of four do not need a ticket. They travel free. Older children require a standard Hola BCN! card.

Buying the “Barcelona Card” card – is it worth it?

The Barcelona Card is more expensive than the “Hola BCN” public transport card, as it includes many benefits for sightseeing & more. But if you are planning to visit some of the sights, the Barcelona Card can save you time and money.

The Barcelona Card is available for 72h, 96h or 120h (3, 4 or 5 consecutive days).

The Barcelona Card also gives you priority access to some attractions (skip the queue). This saves you having to queue at the entrance.

Prices for the Barcelona Card (2024):

3 days: 53 euros / 30 euros  (adults / kids) 4 days: 63 euros / 40 euros  (adults / kids) 5 days: 75 euros / 45 euros  (adults / kids)

4) 10 journey ticket “T-Casual” former “ATM T-10”

Cheaper than a single ticket – airport transfer is not possible.

The 10 journey card “T-10” will no longer be available from 2020. It is now called “T-Casual”. The “T-Casual” card is suitable for you, if you have a longer stay in Barcelona with a rare use of the public transport.

With the T-Casual card you can use the metro, trams, suburban trains (Rodalies) or buses a total of 10 times.

The T-Casual card cannot be used by several people at the same time.

Prices for the 10-ticket (T-Casual)

A ride with this ticket is cheaper than by a “single ticket”. The ticket “T-Casual” currently costs (2024):

  • for one zone: €12.15
  •  for 2 zones: €23.90

It is available at the ticket vending machines.

metro travel tickets

The 10-ride “T-10” card no longer exists. It is now called “T-Casual”. This card is not valid for the airport lines of the underground/trains.

Specific regulations of the “T-Casual” ticket:

  • The 10-ticket “T-Casual” does not include the metro ride to or from the airport . A separate ticket (airport ticket – €10.30 return) is required. This is why many visitors buy the day ticket “Hola BCN” (see above) . This allows you to travel to and from the airport and use Barcelona’s public transport for the chosen period (2-5 days).
  • With a “T-Casual” 1-zone ticket, you have 75 minutes between the first and last validation when changing lines or mode of transport.
  • The T-Casual card cannot be used by more than one person at the same time. This was possible with the “T-10” card, which is no longer available.

5) Group ticket for travel groups or school classes

For larger groups, school classes, etc. there is no convenient group ticket.

HolaBCN Travel Card for travel groups

Many travel groups therefore use the HolaBCN ticket .

With this ticket you can use public transport cheaply and unlimitedly (including airport transfers by metro). Each member of the group gets their own card. This means that someone in your group can also travel individually.

6) Overview: tickets & prices (2024)

7) Barcelona urban transport zones

For how many zones do i have to buy my ticket.

he price of the ticket depends on the number of zones you wish to travel through. A ticket must always be purchased according to the number of zones that the passenger is travelling through. A maximum of 6 zones can be paid for.

Most tourists stay in zone 1

Nearly 300 municipalities are involved in Barcelona’s public transport system. That’s why the area is so vast. Most of the tourist attractions and the centre of the Barcelona region are in Zone 1.

webmail@publictransport.barcelona

Dear Walter,

thank you for your post. If you decide to book online a “Hola BCN!” card, you don’t book it via our website. We just show with our link, that you can book it at getyourguide.com, Europe’s leading company for booking tourist guides, tours and tickets. So you have the standards and service of a big company. Nevertheless we want to answer your question. 1) Yes, you can pay by credit card or PayPal. 2) After booking, you receive a voucher via email. Your voucher must be printed and exchanged at the Barcelona Tourism Office located at Plaça Catalunya, 17 or at any other tourist information point. There are also tourist information points at the Barcelona ElPrat Airport (terminals 1 and 2). So you can easy get yout ticket and use the metro, to get e.g. to the city center.

Julia Barber

Hello, we travel to Barcelona on the 4/1/17 and our party is 2 adults and a child. Is there a child price or is it just a flat one price for all? We would want the Hola BCN 4

Hello Julia, thank your for your question. Here the official terms of use of tickets :”Children under four are not required to have a ticket. All other passengers must have a valid, suitable and validated ticket.” There is no special HolaBCN! ticket for children older than 4 years. That means: If your child is under four you don’t need a ticket, if your child is 4 years and older you need a standard HolaBCN! ticket.

If i buy the hola bcn! Card online can i exhange the voucher in the AirPort? So we can use already from AirPort to centre of Barcelona? Many thanx

Dear David,

Your voucher must be printed and exchanged at one of the 17 Barcelona Tourism Offices or other tourist information points. There are two at Barcelona airport (terminals 1 and 2). You can exchange your voucher direct at the BCN Airport and use the Metro from Airport to City Center with your HolaBCN Card. So you save the money for the standard Metro Airport Ticket (4.50 Euro one way).

there is a “Turisme de Barcelona tourist information point” direct at Barcelona Sants railway station. There you can exchange your voucher. Than you can use the Metro, city bus… Opening Times : daily, from 8am to 8pm.

Robin Urquhart

If I buy a 3 day pass does it cover a full 72 hours from when I buy it… or in other words…. if I buy it at 21.30 on Wednesday does it run out at 21.30 on Saturday?

Brendan Swords

If I buy a 2 day HolaBCN ticket and activate it on 14/11/2017 at 10.00 does the 2 day period stop on 16/11/2017 at 09.59 or does it stop at midnight on 15/11/2017?

Hello Brendan,

a 48h HolaBCN ticket is valid for 48h after first validation. In your case from 14/11/2017 10.00 to 16/11/2017 09.59.

Enjoy your trip.

Cassey

Thinking of purchasing the Hola BCN for 4 days for the F1 in May 2018, but am I correct in thinking that it will actually run out on the 4th day – which for us would be the Sunday at 2pm as we arriving on the prior Thursday around 2pm?

Hello Cassey,

If you buy a 4 day (96 hour card) on Thursday 2pm, it runs out following Monday 1.59pm, not Sunday as you wrote.

Emily

Hi, thinking of purchasing the Hola bcn card for 9 of us for hen do in June. We will arrive on the Friday at approx 12:15, and we fly home on the Monday at approx 13:00, would we need the 3 or 4 day card to cover us for the whole trip? Thanks in advance!

your aircraft lands at 12.15? Due to waiting times, e.g. at the baggage claim, you will not enter the metro at Friday before 13.00. To depart Monday at 13:00, you must check in at the airport before 13:00. The 3 day Hola BCN! is valid for 72h as of the first validation. So from our point of view, the 3 day card is the right card for you.

Alkazri

Very informative! Thanks Hola BCN! We’re flying to Barcelona today. ???????

Linda Sampedey

Hi. Is the N17 buses included in the Hola Barcelona travel card?

The N17 Nitebus is operated by the private bus company Mohn. The Hola Barcelona travel card is NOT valid on this bus.

Have fun in Barcelona

Ken

I understand that a Hola BCN card includes a free roundtrip metro ride between the airport and city center. If I buy a 3-day Hola BCN card on Day 1 and leave Barcelona on Day 5, is my card still valid for a free return ride from city center to the airport?

The period of use for the HolaBCN card begins with the first use and ends in your case 3 days later.

David

Hello, can I use the HolaBCN travel card to Molins de Rei from Barcelona city centre?

Hi David, Molins de Rei is in fare zone 2B. The Hola BCN ticket is not valid here. Have fun in Barcelona

Aj

Hi, I would like to ask if I buy a HolaBCN 48 hours, can I use that from Granollers Centre to Barcelona city centre ? Are all the zones are covered in HolaBCN ?

Hello Aj, Granollers Center is in Zone 3 and is therefore outside the validity of the Hola BCN Travel Card. One-way tickets are probably the best alternative. Have fun in Barcelona

Ana

Hello, can I use the HolaBCN travel card to Montmeló station from Barcelona city centre? I am going to MotoGP and I need to get to Montmelo so I can after that use shuttle bus to the circuit.

Hello Ana, The “Montmeló” station of the Formula 1 circuit is approximately 15-20 km from Barcelona city centre (FGC zone 2D). The Hola BCN ticket is not valid here. Enjoy the race

Dayo

I’ve got two questions. 1/ how can I find out when my Hola BCN Card expires? I can’t really remember when I used the first time. 2/ I know the Hola BCN card is for TMB buses in Barcelona but why TMB app (I use a Journey Planner) shows me AMB bus?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Dayo, 1) Once you have purchased the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, you have 90 days from the day of purchase to validate your card. After that, i.e. after the first validation, the card will expire depending on the number of hours you have on your card. For example, if you validate the 2-day card (48 hours) on Tuesday at 8am, you can travel unlimited until Thursday at 8am.

2)The TMB app shows all buses TMB operating in Barcelona.

Have fun in Barcelona.

Hi, Thank you for reply. 1/ I know about this but the question was “how can I found out what time I first used the Hola Card as I don’t remember. But anyway someone told me it’s on printed on the back of the card 😀 Me silly. 2/ “The TMB app shows all buses operating in Barcelona”. Not true. I used the app and waited for a bus and then I found out from the driver that I couldn’t use his bus because it’s a different company (AMB). Then I realised on the app I can use buses with red numbers.

Ryan

Hi we’re a family of six and will be visiting Barcelona and it seems like the Hola Barcelona card is the best option. Will in need to buy one for each of my kids (ages 3,7,9), or do any of those ages ride public transport for free?

Hello Ryan, Children under four are not required to have a ticket. They travel free. Older children need a standard Hola BCN! card.

Enjoy your Barcelona trip

Metro Ticket Zones is LIVE!

The Metro network has been split into four zones (1-4). The new ticket range will see the majority of journeys either reduced in price or with no additional cost for customers.

Ticket questions

Metro ticket zones is the name of our ticketing range. To travel on our network, we have a zone-based ticketing system. By using this zone-based ticketing system this gives our customers the opportunity to purchase a ticket within their chosen zone, without the need to specify which stops they are travelling between which allows for greater flexibility in their travel plans.

No, it was recognised that the kinds of journeys that people make by tram are different from those made by train. This means that by adopting the same zonal boundaries as rail, we are not be able to offer the flexibility and value that has been built into our zonal ticket range.

The Metro Ticket Zones Map provides the full details of how the network has been split into four zones and can be used to check which zone your stop is in, and which ticket type you will need to complete your journey.

Where a stop has two zones, this is called a border stop. There are three border stops and these are shown on the Metro Ticket Zones Map with the stop name in a white box. If you are starting or ending your journey at a border stop, you will not be charged for both zones. The zone that you pay for will depend on your direction of travel.

There are three stops (Jewellery Quarter, Black Lake and Priestfield) that are on the border of two zones, which means these stops are in two fare zones. This can be seen on the Metro Ticket Zones Map with the stop name in a white box.

If you are starting or ending your journey at a border stop then your zone will depend on the direction of travel. For example, Jewellery Quarter is on the border of Zone 1 and 2. Therefore, if you travel from Jewellery Quarter to a stop in Zone 1, you should treat Jewellery Quarter as a stop in Zone 1. If you travel to Zone 2 and beyond, you should treat Jewellery Quarter as a stop in Zone 2.

The range of tickets available to purchase are simplified to ensure that you have the correct ticket for your journey and to ensure that customers receive the best value for their travel needs.

Tickets range from a single (one way) to unlimited journeys all day, in a variety of zonal combinations, giving customers even more flexibility. Our popular season tickets also include zonal options, delivering a saving for many customers on their frequent journeys. Children enjoy a 50% discount on the adult ticket price.

The fare table sets out all of the ticketing options. Please check to see which ticket will be best for your travel needs.

metro travel tickets

Tickets are available to purchase from our conductors onboard the tram, using the MyMetro app, or via Swift. Metro ticket zones will also be available to buy at Payzone outlets.

Metro Ticket Zones is now available to purchase on Payzone systems.

Please visit Payzone or call our ticketing team on 0345 835 8181 for information about alternative ways that you can buy a zonal ticket and ensure that you are receiving the best value for your journey with Metro -during the short period between the new zonal fares going live and the upgrade being completed for Payzone outlets.

Yes, our Metro only passes and season tickets offer great value as customers are able to pay for their travel in advance, only in the areas of the network that they need to use.

Metro Ticket Zones fares are currently only available for Metro-only products.

Please call our ticketing team on 0345 835 8181 for more information about the zonal combinations that are available for Direct Debit customers. Mums go on 12 hour party trip to Ibiza for just ?34 Rebecca Rattcliff @0nlymums /Instagram

A group of mums travelled to Ibiza for a 12-hour party trip for just £34 – and they were back in time for the school run.

Rebecca Rattcliff, 38, proposed a day in the sun with her close-knit group of mum friends – Laura, Danielle, Danielle, Lauren and Fay.

However, they quickly ran into a hurdle: because of childcare commitments, they could only find space for one free day – and so chose to fly to Ibiza from Manchester for a 12-hour day trip, leaving at 6am and landing back in the UK at 11pm.

A time-strapped Rebecca had previously done a similar trip in January 2023, when she flew to Lanzarote for the day, so was inspired to suggested the Ibiza trip to her friends.

Rebecca Rattcliff (centre) and her mum chums, on 12 hour long Ibiza holiday. See SWNS story SWSMibiza. A group of mums travelled to Ibiza for a 12 HOUR long holiday after bagging return flights for just ??34 - and returned in time for the school run. Rebecca Rattcliff, 38, decided she needed a day in the sun with her group of mum chums - Laura, Danielle, Danielle, Lauren and Fay. Due to childcare commitments and working on Monday, the six women had just one day free together and had to fly to and from Ibiza in just 12 hours.

She has four children and between the six of the group, the mums have 15 children – so it’s little wonder they could only find one day that would work.

‘We were keen to look for a good deal and everybody loves the Ibiza sunshine,’ Rebecca, who works as a travel consultant, said.

A timeline of Rebecca’s day trip to Ibiza

1.30am – Wake up 6am – Flight to Ibiza 10am – Brunch in Ibiza town Midday – Cocktail time 1.15pm – Arrive in San Antonio 6pm – Dinner time at Bresca 7pm – Sunset at Café Mambo 11pm – Flight back to Manchester 1.15am – Arrive back in the UK 6.30am – Up for the school run.

‘We found Ryanair flights on Skyscanner, and we knew for everyone to be able to come it had to be that Sunday.’

The group paid £10 each for a return minibus to Manchester Airport, and they were picked up in Ibiza by a travel company for a cost of €27 each. They saved on luggage too, since they only needed one small day bag each.

‘We had brunch at Passion Café and had an explore around the marina…then we had cocktails overlooking the marina and then the transfer picked us up and drove us to San Antonio bay,’ Rebecca detailed, noting that they used biodegradable towels to save on space.

‘We ended up doing 26k steps just exploring and then we went for a beautiful dinner at a place called Bresca.’

Finally, they watched the sunset at Café Mambo before being picked up to go back to the airport.

‘We were so blessed with the weather – the sky was cloudless,’ Rebecca added.

‘It was such a good day – I spent time in gorgeous company with supportive female friends all on the mum journey together.

‘It was a blissful day off to treasure and we all felt we’d been there longer than a day.

‘You feel refreshed after 12 hours in the sunshine.’
