mets citi field food tour

On Thursday March 21st, we got to attend the 2024 edition of ‘What’s New at Citi,’ an annual event where the Mets get to show off some of their additions and improvements for the new season at Citi Field. The day encompasses a presentation from various senior executives, a tour of some updated facilities and, the big draw, a tasting of all the new food items at Citi Field.

mets citi field food tour

Of the pre-food festivities, a few things stood out. Citi Field has a brand new Delta 360 Club behind home plate, and the space is beautiful, from an ‘animated’ David Wright swing on a wall made of grass to the retro-inspired lighting, fans who get club access will not be disappointed in the new space.

mets citi field food tour

We also got a look into the new team store, which occupies the space previously dedicated to the Team Museum, which is now out in Center Field in the Fan Fest section. The store features all self checkout lines to make the experience faster, and has an expanded section for women’s and children’s apparel, something that is lacking not just in Citi, but throughout the sport.

We then got a sneak peak at the Queens Crew, Citi Field’s new dance team that will be at approximately 30 games this season. Kudos to the Crew for dancing on the frigid Citi concourse; hopefully, they will have better weather for their subsequent appearances.

On the way to the food tasting, we got a look at some of the promotional items for this season, including a Mercury Mets jersey (!), some fun bobbleheads, and the Rugby shirt that Brian is borderline obsessed with.

Our daughters would be mad if we didn’t spotlight the Hello Kitty bobblehead. It will no doubt attract some eye rolls but it’s a brand that has serious staying power and holds both nostalgia value for the Millennial fan and instant appeal to the newest generation of fans. It is as adorable as one would expect from a Hello Kitty bobblehead but decked out in full Mets uniform and the light up bow is a delight.

mets citi field food tour

The food and drink portion was unbelievable, with literally dozens of new items to try. We wanted to highlight a few of our personal favorites.

mets citi field food tour

Brian and Maggie: Three words for you: loaded pepperoni chips. Imagine nachos, but instead of tortilla chips, they were fried pepperoni. You can find these at Anne Burrell’s Italian Treats on the Field Level section 101.

mets citi field food tour

Maggie: One new item on the menu is a cuban sandwich, via Benny’s Cuban Cafe in the Taste of the City Section (only from July 25 to September 22). It’s a traditional construction with pulled pork and ham, united by swiss cheese, tangy pickles, and a piquant dijon mustard. The brioche bun is soft enough that it might collapse under the weight of a pile of Pat laFrieda beef, but it’s just right for a good Cuban. There’s no gimmick or twist, just a solid offering of a classic sandwich that really should be in more ballparks already.

mets citi field food tour

Brian: Adam Richman of Man Vs Food fame has opened up the ‘Adam Richman’s Burger Hall of Fame’ on the field level behind section 101. Both burgers sampled were tasty, but the French Onion Soup burger was a revelation. Somehow, it wasn’t messy at all, and packed a ton of flavor.

mets citi field food tour

Maggie: While everyone’s attention is on the glorious rainbow cookie egg roll (as it should, it’s a delight), don’t sleep on the loukoumades, a Greek donut that has distant familial ties to the zeppoli. Unlike their Italian cousins, these are smaller, lighter and sprinkled with cinnamon, a flavor shamefully underrepresented in stadium desserts. They offer a more scaled down alternative to Citi Field’s usual Instagram-ready dessert mashups that could feed a family of 6. Grab these at the Caesar’s Sportsbook on the Excelsior Level.

mets citi field food tour

Brian: Maggie is right, the rainbow cookie eggroll from Wok ‘n Roll in the Taste of the City is both delightful and glorious, but she may actually be underselling it. It was the single best thing I tasted all day, and lived up to all the hype I brought to it, as the rainbow cookie is my favorite cookie in all the land.

Overall, Citi continues to be not just a great place to watch a game, but a great place to eat. We didn’t mention the cocktails, the new Korean fried chicken from Seoul Bird, the upcoming Bagelfest (!), the new 3D screen, the Harry Potter scarves, or any number of other really great additions to the park this year. You’ll just have to go to the games and find out for yourselves.

Where To Eat At Citi Field

Going to Citi Field is a treat, and not just because you get to witness The Mets undergo a lengthy, 63-year rebuilding process to fix their roster. As 7-Line Faithful know, the ballpark is consistently voted as having some of the best stadium food in the country. Of course, you can get a hot dog with yellow mustard and a helmet cup full of soft serve with orange and blue sprinkles. But this stadium has plenty to offer, like Korean fried chicken, steakhouse-quality beef, and so much more. These are the best things to eat at Citi Field.

fried chicken being dipped into a gochujang barbecue sauce with pickled daikon radish

Bucket O'Birds

Location: seoul bird, promenade level, hudson whiskey ny club.

Seoul Bird is the most exciting free agent signing the Mets made this year. Their bucket of juicy, endlessly crispy fried chicken, served with a sticky, tangy gochujang barbecue sauce, and a scattering of sweet pickled radishes is a deliciously welcome addition to the roster. If we could snack on a helmet cup full of their bright pickled radishes, we would.

a jerk chicken sadnwich with plantains and pineapple slaw

Taste of Queens

Location: field level, taste of the city.

The Mets are taking Queens’ nickname “The World’s Borough” seriously by highlighting a rotation of local businesses on the patio in right field. Each spot will take over for about two months of the season, with options ranging from fried rice and chicken skewers from Poprice, to RyRy’s jerk chicken sandwich with a bright pineapple slaw, and Benny’s Cubanos finishing out the year.

a cheeseburger with maple bourbon bacon jam and fried shallots

Mel's Butcher Box Burger

Location: pat lafrieda meat purveyors, field level, taste of the city; section 416.

The crown jewel in Citi Field’s concessions stands is undoubtedly the selection of sandwiches and burgers from Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors, which supplies some of the city’s best steakhouses with beef. Our favorite is the Mel’s Butcher Box Burger, with its two steaky patties, maple bourbon bacon jam, cheddar, and fried shallots. It’s big, heavy, and something we’d be more than happy to eat at a steakhouse alongside a few martinis, but works even better with a beer at the ballpark.

a gyro sandwich with fries and veggies

Traditional Gyro

Location: gyro jimmy's greek grill, excelsior level, metro market.

Crispy gyro meat and fries, stuffed in a pita with fresh vegetables, are an excellent complement to watching the Mets ground into double plays for five months. Crush a gyro or two, and bring back an order of their loukoumades, which are Greek donuts with honey and cinnamon sugar, for dessert.

a brisket grilled cheese

The Bases Loaded Brisket Sandwich from Comfortland photo credit: Kate Previte

Coca-Cola Food Truck

Location: excelsior level, coca-cola corner.

Another effort to showcase local restaurants, these handheld foods will be available out of a truck on the party patio in right field. Start the year off with an extremely rich Comfortland cola-braised brisket grilled cheese, grab a killer chicken vodka sandwich from NY Panini over the summer, and, in August and September, a chicken tinga quesadilla from Maiz.

a hot dog with a cheesesteak on top

Location: Chiddy's Cheesesteaks, Field Level, Section 132

When a normal hot dog simply won’t do, get a Chiddy Dog from Chiddy’s Cheesesteaks. The sandwich is more like a creature from a Cronenberg movie: it’s a foot-long hot dog topped with a full cheesesteak, peppers and onions, and melted whizz. It might make you fall asleep in your seat, so consider splitting it.

a pulled pork sandwich from pig beach at citi field

Pulled Pork Sandwich

Location: pig beach bbq, field level, section 135.

This Brooklyn-based barbecue shop has set up their porky paradise in section 135, where you can get a loaded brisket mac and cheese, but we’d go for their pulled pork sandwich. The barbecue is smoky, and the slaw and sauce brighten up the whole thing like a Pete Alonso Polar Bear Bomb to straight away center field.

a birria taco at citi field

Birria Tacos

Location: nixtamal nyc, field level, taste of the city.

Leave your crisp white Mets jersey at home if you plan on getting Nixtamal NYC’s birria tacos. The rich, cheesy tacos served with consommé are a bit messy, but they’re excellent. Save the warming tacos for a chilly game early or late in the season. Their esquites won’t blow your mind, but they’re a good snack if you just want a couple bites.

a chocolate shake from shake shack with orange and blue sprinkles

Shackburger, Mets MVP Shake

Location: shake shack, field level, taste of the city.

When Citi Field first opened, one of its calling cards was the gigantic Shake Shack in dead center field. Fifteen years later, the line hasn’t died down. While it’s much easier to get yourself a shackburger in NYC now than it was in 2009, the line has stayed consistent, and for good reason. Shake Shack is still one of the best places to get food in the ballpark. Grab a milkshake and a shackburger.

The Ultimate 2023 Mets Fan Guide: Food, Transit & More at Citi Field

mets citi field food tour

  • Mar 28, 2023
  • By Scott Lynch

It's been nearly four decades since the New York Mets won the World Series, but even the most casual fan will tell you that hope springs eternal on opening day. This year the team is coming off a 100-plus-win season last year, with some key changes over the winter, so it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun out here in Queens this season.

Over the past few years, Citi Field has expanded upon the old "seats and suites" model of stadiums, adding more open-air, open-to-everyone fan experiences as well as club-like premium spaces. And food. So much food. Here's a look at some of the highlights.

Here's What You'll Be Eating All Summer As The Mets Tear Through The League And Are Crowned Champions

Waffle Maple Ice Cream Sandwich from Sweet Chick

The acclaimed Pop Up Bagels — which Redding, Connecticut, resident Adam Goldberg started as a backyard pandemic project in 2020 — now has three locations in his home state and one coming soon to Greenwich Village. He’s also out here slinging a pizza bagel in the Citi Field suites this summer, combining two of the best foods on the planet into one chewy, gooey delight.

Food Network star Sunny Anderson debuts her Sunny's All-American Kitchen concept at Citi Field, with Nacho Skins (hollowed-out fried potato halves loaded up with things like shredded chicken, black beans, bacon, and tons of cheese), her Famous Mac and Cheese, and Campfire Parfaits, which eat like s'mores in a cup.

Other celebrity chefs are getting into the action as well, including Marc Murphy , currently a judge on Chopped, who unveils two new creations at his Porchetta Sandwich Shop; and chocolate master Jacques Torres , who'll have his excellent Chocolate Chip Cookies at stands throughout the park, as well as cute, Mr. Met emblazoned chocolate bars.

Cheeseburger Empanada from Empanada Mama

Empanada Mama brings their excellent Cheeseburger Empanadas to the ballpark, and Upper West Side favorite Jacob's Pickles unleashes an insane Fried Chicken Sandwich upon the borough of Queens, dripping with honey BBQ sauce and stuffed between a glazed doughnut. It sounds like it's way too much, but it's actually just exactly enough. And an outfit called Beyond Nightlife Sushi will be selling various rolls and "sushi burritos" in several locations.

One of the must-try items this year are the wonderfully juicy Tamarind Barbecue Wings with ranch dressing from Emma's Torch , a non-profit organization with a restaurant in Carroll Gardens that "empowers refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking through culinary education." Don't miss these beauties.

And Citi Field hasn't forgotten its neighbors! As part of the Taste of Queens initiative, several local spots will have a booth on the stadium's Field Level, including Flushing's own Tang , here selling Bulgogi Rice Cups; the LGBTQ+ owned and operated Fresco's Grand Cantina from Astoria, with Ropa Vieja Quesadillas and sweet Churro Nachos; and Jamaica's Nourish Spot , mixing up Berry Banana Slammer smoothies.

Miniature Oreo Donut from Sundae Donuts

Plenty of fan favorites are back as well, including Shake Shack (look for their Citi Field exclusive, the Mets MVP Shake); Pig Beach and their terrific patty melt; Fuku's no-joke Spicy Fried Chicken Sando; and Pat LaFrieda's overflowing, sliced rib eye Cheese Steak. And, somewhat unexpectedly, fried chicken specialists Sweet Chick served up the best dessert of the day, a maple and chocolate Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich.

Rounding out your food options are Sundae Donuts with several super-sugary options, the Japanese-inspired Mexican spot Takumi Tacos , Chiddy's Cheese Steaks at the Coca-Cola Truck, and slices from East Harlem's famous Patsy's Pizzeria . Stalwarts like Nathan's Famous hot dogs and chicken tenders will also be in ample supply around the stadium, and, of course, those glorious Mister Softee swirls in a Mets batting helmet bowl.

To wash it all down, Citi Field serves more than 60 different beers and hard seltzers, as well as wines and premium cocktails, at various concessions and club spaces throughout the ballpark.

The new scoreboard at Citi Field

You can't miss the biggest addition to Citi Field this season: the centerfield digital scoreboard, which measures an astonishing 17,400 square feet and is powered by 13 million LED diodes. This means it's huge, bright, and crystal clear from any angle, even in the shining sun or pouring rain. A Citi Field spokesperson touted the scoreboard as the largest at any stadium in the Major League.

There's also a massive new screen in the Outfield Fan Fest area, so you won't miss any of the action if you choose to spend part of the game eating and drinking back there. And that's in addition to the more 1,200 large format screens newly installed throughout the park.

Mr Met

The Mets Hall of Fame and Museum, located just off the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, offers a few new exhibitions, including a 50th-anniversary look back at the incredible run to end the 1973 season, when the Amazins stormed back from last place to clinch the division on the final game.

There will also be $15 tickets available to college students this year. The organization noted that this younger generation "has been priced out of Major League Baseball consistently," and they aim to fix that.

The Mets are working on a "$15 price point" ticket plan for college students: pic.twitter.com/ZecWFPdFfL — SNY (@SNYtv) March 23, 2023

The Mets noted during a preview to the season that their aim was to create different experiences, or "boroughs," around the ballpark for fans, and that includes some new clubs. The most exclusive is a speakeasy with a hidden entrance, called the Cadillac Club at Payson's, which is only accepting 25 to 30 members. This costs up to $25,000 a season, and features assigned seats, a private bar, an elevated dining experience, personal waitstaff, complimentary parking, food, soft drinks, beer and wine.

More inclusive are the two Híjole! bars with field-facing seating, which can also be rented out for big groups on a game-by-game basis. When these are not rented out, they will be open to the public. Additionally, there's a luxe, 52-seat Empire Club available for rent.

Take the Train to the Game!

citifield22-6

There's a lot a new stuff this year, but one thing stays the same: by far the best way to get to Citi Field is via the MTA (especially with parking prices now at $40 during games). You can do this by either taking the 7 train to Mets - Willets Point, which put you steps away from the stadium's main entrance, right by the famous Mets Home Run Apple and last year's addition, the monumental Tom Seaver statue; or on the LIRR, which runs trains to Citi Field from Penn Station, Woodside, the new Grand Central Madison , and any station along the Port Washington Line.

Port Washington

Both the LIRR and the 7 train will bring you steps from the ballpark!

Mets' New at Citi Field Event Hits Home Run With Innovative Food Offerings

L ast week, Citi Field opened its gates for an exclusive event: "New at Citi Field." This gathering wasn't about baseball though, it was a tantalizing showcase of the stadium's latest culinary offerings, promising to elevate the ballpark dining experience to a new level. From classic ballpark fare with a twist to gourmet delights, the event highlighted the Mets' commitment to providing fans with a culinary adventure.

Fresh off being voted the No.1 Best Stadium Food in 2023 by USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, Citi Field maintained its reputation as one of the top culinary destinations in New York City by being honored as the #1 Best Ballpark Food in 2024.

From the moment attendees stepped foot into the stadium, they were greeted by the irresistible aroma of freshly prepared dishes.

Among the highlights was the seven layer cookie egg roll. It contains a rainbow cookie, raspberry jam and chocolate syrup rolled in an egg roll wrapper.

For those craving something with a bit more heat, Nixtamal NYC’s Birria Tacos

did not disappoint. These zesty tacos featured slow cooked beef knuckle & ribs

in a seasoned broth, melted cheese, topped with cilantro & onions served hot on corn tortillas with a side of caldo de birria, offering a flavorful kick that delighted the taste buds.

Making its Citi Field debut in 2024 is Seoul Bird which will be located in the Hudson Whiskey NY Club on the Promenade Level. Owner, Chef Judy Joo’s stand will serve crispy korean fried chicken tenders served with chili chicken sauce, pickled daikon and french fries, as well as Jap Chae noodles which consists of sweet potato noodles, baby spinach, carrots, onions, peppers, egg omelet.

It wouldn’t be a proper trip to Citi Field without a Mets MVP Shake from Shake Shack. This shake contains vanilla custard blended with chocolate and chocolate chip cookies, topped with cookie crumbs and sprinkles.

As the event came to a close, attendees left Citi Field with full stomachs and smiles on their faces, eager to return to the ballpark for more culinary adventures. With its diverse and innovative food offerings, "New at Citi Field" proved that there's more to baseball than just what happens on the field, it's also about bringing people together to share unforgettable experiences, one delicious bite at a time.

What's new at Mets' Citi Field in 2024? French onion soup burger, Delta Club and more

mets citi field food tour

NEW YORK — Entering the last full week of spring training down in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Mets owner Steve Cohen joked that Citi Field was his "money pit."

Over the last few seasons, Mets brass has continuously been trying to innovate and expand to cater to the fan base.

Last season, the Mets debuted the largest scoreboard in Major League Baseball, the speakeasy-style Cadillac Club at Payson’s, the Hijole Front Porch and the kid's club. The extensive menu, which grew to include a donut chicken sandwich among other options, helped Citi Field earn the distinction as the top MLB stadium for food, according to the USA Today.

"We’re always thinking about new ways to engage the fans," Cohen said on Sunday. "I've engaged a working group to kind of think about the future of Citi Field. It’s still very early in progress and (try to) at least lay out a blueprint of what we might do if we choose to do it."

"It’s still early, but there's always something to do. There's always interesting projects to at least think about."

Mets management did not stop with the changes from last season, with a number of game-changing options designed to up the entertainment value of heading to the ballpark in Flushing this spring, summer and fall. Here is what stands out from the newest offerings at Citi Field during the 2024 season:

'Starting to look stacked': Steve Cohen touts Mets organizational strength as season nears

Join the club

The most exclusive club in Citi Field behind home plate has been overhauled and grown from 2,500 square feet to 7,000 square feet as the new Delta SKY360° Club.

Members of the club will have access to a daily menu, raw and sushi bars, along carvery and dessert stations, and complimentary beer, wine and spirits. They will sit in new wider chairs in the first eight rows behind home plate or the two rows behind the dugout and have access to VIP merchandise

The climate-controlled club, which includes a 50-foot bar and a green David Wright living wall, was designed last April and completed in roughly five months. It includes premium booth and lounge seating for members.

What's in store

Fans used to have to cram into a tight space for the biggest source of blue and orange team gear, but the Team Store in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda has been expanded for the upcoming 2024 season.

At 10,000 square feet, the new store is about 50 percent bigger than the old shop. It's also plenty brighter and packed to the gills with jerseys, shirts, hats and other Mets memorabilia.

A new RFID self-checkout system also aims to get fans out onto the concourse and into their seats quicker.

The space is highlighted by a hanging artwork designed by Michael Murphy, which shows the Mets script when approached from one angle and the interlocking NY logo when viewed from the side.

Expand your palette

There is almost no way to get sick of the food at Citi Field. While the traditional ballpark fare remains, the menu seemingly changes every year.

The Mets have partnered with celebrity chefs Judy Joo, Adam Richman and Anne Burrell to get the cravings started.

Joo's Seoul Bird in the Hudson Whisky Club will offer Korean fried chicken and jap chae noodles - sweet potato noodles with baby spinach, carrots, onions, peppers and egg omelet.

Adam Richman's Burger Hall of Fame will bring a French onion soup burger and jucy lucy with two three-ounce Pat LaFrieda patties with American cheese and sauteed onions. Finally, Anne Burrell's Italian Eats will feature a garlic bread chicken parm hero and loaded pepperoni chips with sausage ragu, provolone cheese, onions and cherry peppers. The two will be featured on the field level.

The new Keith's Grill on the promenade level has a burger with hot pastrami and deli mustard or another with bacon, guacamole, chipotle aioli and jalapeños.

Nixtamal NYC in the Taste of the City in center field brings birria tacos and street corn. Takumi Tacos in the homeplate market offers a carnitas burrito and Gyro Jimmy's provides a traditional gyro.

For dessert, Wok N' Roll on field level has a rainbow cookie egg roll, Glaze Donuts has Boston cream-filled donuts thorughout the park and Empanada Mama has a nutella and banana empanada at field elvel.

Pedal to the game

The Mets have added another way to get to the game, with new sites of CitiBike docking stations - one near the Jackie Robinson Rotunda and another beyond left field.

With more than 60 docking stations, fans will have a different mode of transportation to get to and from the game.

That's the ticket

Through research and fan feedback, the Mets have moved their Saturday start times into the daytime. The team's home games between March 28 and May 25 will begin at 1:40 p.m., while the remainder of the Saturday home games will feature a first pitch of 4:10 p.m.,

The new nine-game fielder's choice plan allows fans to choose between three separate six-game packs along with three games of their choosing. The plan also comes with some food and beverage value.

And for the first time, the Mets are offering the ability to reserve suites online at citifieldsuites.com.

Odds and ends

  • The Mets' new co-ed dance team, the Queen's Crew, will be performing at approximately 30 games. An emcee will be added to the entertainment team to keep the energy in the crowd going throughout those games.
  • The Mets Hall of Fame and museum have been moved to new places in the ballpark. The Hall of Fame plaques can be found at the top of the Jackie Robinson rotunda, while the museum has been relocated to the Fan Fest on the field level concourse.
  • The LED lights in the ballpark have been improved to provide full color and blinking effects for a unique visual experience. Edwin Diaz's ninth entrances will be all the more appealing.

Free stuff: Mets' 2024 promotional giveaways

The Mets will have 23 giveaways, including three unique artist series items, this upcoming season. The team will also retire Dwight Gooden's No. 16 on April 14 and Darryl Strawberry's No. 18 on June 1. Here are a few of the notable promotions this season for the first 15,000 fans in attendance (unless otherwise noted):

April 13 vs. Royals: Dwight Gooden moving arm bobblehead

April 27 vs. Cubs: Hogwarts house scarves

May 25 vs. Giants: Artist series Joel Mesler beach tote

The New York Mets hosted a media tour at Citi Field on Thursday to show off new promotions and food available at the ballpark for the 2023 Major League Baseball season. The food items are quite interesting and have caught the attention of baseball fans and food enthusiasts on social media.

Two food selections that particularly stand out definitely fall on the wacky side.

First, behold the fried donut chicken sandwich, served by Jacob’s Pickles at Mets games this upcoming season at Citi Field. According to MLB.com’s Matt Monagan, this food item will feature “glazed donuts for buns” and fried chicken “in between with honey bbq sauce.”

The next item also features a glazed donut- and a lot more. It’s an ice cream milkshake from Sundae Donuts, that is topped with sprinkles, a glazed donut, and popcorn (there appears to be an alternate selection topped with Oreos).

5 things to watch as Mets face Royals in three-game series at Citi Field

Here are five things to watch when the Mets return home to face the upstart Kansas City Royals in a three-game series at Citi Field...

The offense is clicking on all cylinders

After a six-game season-opening homestand where the Mets were a combination of lost and passive at the plate, the offense erupted on their just-completed road trip, culminating with a 16-4 thrashing of the Braves in Atlanta .

During Thursday's win, six different Mets had two hits.

And in New York's three game series in Atlanta, they scored 29 runs.

Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil , who were mired in early-season slumps, have both broken out. Meanwhile, Pete Alonso , who had a solid start to the season but a rough start to the road trip, heated up in Atlanta, with four hits and a homer in the final two games of the series.

Even DJ Stewart , who was hitless until Tuesday night, got in on the fun, with two homers against the Braves.

The only Met who has yet to truly break out is Francisco Lindor , who showed some signs during the road trip but remains stuck in an offensive rut.

The reception for Francisco Lindor

Lindor is a notoriously slow starter, but his first 12 games of the season have been extra difficult.

Entering play on Friday, Lindor is slashing a meager .098/.203/.176 in 59 plate appearances.

Speaking this past weekend, Lindor -- after current and former teammates, and coaches reached out to show support -- said "It's good to know there's people on my side besides my wife and my family. Just put my head down, keep grinding, and keep climbing."

Lindor, who has been a phenomenal Met on and off the field, deserves to receive support from the fans as well.

And on Friday night, they can show him how much he's appreciated -- and perhaps ease his mind a bit -- by giving him a standing ovation when he steps to the plate for the first time .

A fresh bullpen

Because of the rain out on Wednesday and blowout win on Thursday, the Mets will enter this series with a very well-rested bullpen.

Aside from Drew Smith , who pitched 1.2 innings on Thursday, no other high-leverage reliever has pitched since Monday.

Edwin Diaz , Brooks Raley , and Adam Ottavino have been off since Sunday.

Jorge Lopez and Jake Diekman last pitched on Monday.

What can Luis Severino do for an encore?

After a rough first start where he allowed 11 hits and six runs (three earned) but showed some positive signs by striking out six and walking none, Severino located much better in his second start and the results followed.

In 5.0 innings against the Reds in Cincinnati, Severino allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out seven.

With Kodai Senga out until at least May 27, it's Severino who is the Mets' starter with the most upside.

Sean Manaea has performed very well early on, but his stuff isn't on the level of Severino when the big right-hander is at his best.

Severino gets the ball on Friday night in the series opener.

The young, exciting, red-hot Royals

The Royals enter this series winners of seven straight, coming off a 13-3 thrashing of the Houston Astros , and a half game back in the wide open AL Central.

Kansas City's offense is led by 23-year-old star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. , who is hitting .358/.414/.755 with four homers in 13 games this season.

Their lineup also features Vinnie Pasquantino , Salvador Perez , Hunter Renfroe , and Nelson Velazquez .

Their rotation is fronted by Cole Ragans , who gets the start on Sunday.

The Mets won't face old friend Seth Lugo during this series, but they will go up against Michael Wacha , who toes the rubber on Friday.

Mets ace and world series hero Dwight 'Doc' Gooden

Forty years after he had to sneak into the Astrodome as a teenager to make his first start in the big leagues for the Mets , a year before he was as dominating and dazzling as any right-handed pitcher you will ever see in your life, Dwight Gooden will be young again on Sunday at Citi Field when his No. 16 is finally retired .

It will happen in the year when he will somehow — amazingly — turn 60, after the long and hard road that brought him to a day like this, a moment like this, one that will be filled with memory and also regret.

“So much of this doesn’t seem real,” he told me the other day. “You know what really doesn’t seem real? That I’m going to be 60. I mean, are you kidding me?”

He has still made it here, after all the days and nights when he lit up old Shea Stadium, and jump-started The K Korner all over again, and seemed perfectly capable of throwing fastballs past the world. After that, of course, because of the power of his addictions and his own weaknesses, he famously tried to throw it all away.

But on Sunday, when people should come out to see him at Citi Field the way they used to come to see him at old Shea, he won’t just be young again. He will be a Met again, one of the most important they ever had, despite all the heartbreak later.

I asked him what the best of it was for him in 1985, the year before his Mets won the World Series , when he was 24-4 and every start felt like a compelling as the ones we would get much later when Aaron Judge was trying to break home run records in September of 2022.

“You know what I remember the best, out of everything?” he said. “I remember what Shea would sound like when I got to two strikes, when they’d get up and ask me for another strikeout.”

He laughed and said, “Or another K, I guess I should say.”

It wasn’t just the strikeouts that year. It was all of it, a stat line that even now gives off a beam of light. The earned run average of 1.53. The 16 complete games, a real good number, because it was his. And eight shutouts. This was what Tom Seaver was like when he was young. Doc was that good. And, truly, you didn’t want to miss a start, even if you were just watching on television, because you were afraid that would be the game when he would pitch the no-hitter he would, ironically, later pitch for the Yankees .

That would be the night when he struck out 20.

“I’ve got grandkids now,” he said. “I’ve got two great grandkids, if you can believe it. On Sunday, I want my grandkids to experience, even for one day, what I did for a living once.

“But it’s more than that for me. After I cut ties with the Mets in ’94, I felt like I never got the chance to say goodbye to the fans who had been such a big part of my success, the ones who didn’t just cheer me like they did, but stayed with me through all my struggles. This is my chance on Sunday to let them know how thankful I still am to them, and also how sorry I am that I let them down.”

He paused and said, “I want this to be a celebration. To me, this is about way more than just a number.”

It will be. If you were around the city in the middle ’80s, you know it almost has to be, despite what happened to Gooden and the Mets later on.

“Listen, I know what I did off the field,” he said. “I know some people are going to hold that against me forever, all the things I did to myself, missing the World Series parade and rehab and all the rest of it. And that’s their right. Nobody knows better than I did how much I screwed up. But I also never thought I should get a life sentence because of my past.”

He was still just 20 in 1985. There have been other young pitchers with his kind of arm and his kind of talent and his kind of fastball. No one was ever better at that age than Gooden was. We were sure that he was going to the Hall of Fame. But at least he has made it to this day, what will hopefully be a day in the sun across the parking lot from where Shea Stadium once stood.

“When you’re playing,” he said, “you never really understand what you’re doing. But now I’ve been removed from the game for twenty-four years. I’m able to look back at what I did and, even more, how much it meant to people. That’s why I’m determined on Sunday to enjoy the moment. I keep trying to imagine what it’s going to be like, play a tape inside my head. But I can’t visualize it, no matter how hard I try. It’s just gonna have to be like what it was like when I took the mound. I’m just gonna let it happen.”

Dwight Gooden on what it means to have his No. 16 retired and to finally thank Mets fans

There really should be a big crowd on Sunday at Citi Field. When Dwight Gooden, pushing 60 now, is on the field, the ones in the stands can feel in the spring of 2024 as if it is the summer of 1985 again, when he was young and made them feel even younger. The day won’t be about the mistakes he made and what he did to himself and what absolutely should have been a Hall of Fame career. This is about how much he mattered, on a team that mattered.

“I just want to hear that sound again,” Dwight Gooden said.

Take Me Out to the Gift Shop

For a lot of fans at the new Mets team store, game day is all about the shopping.

Shoppers dressed in Mets shirt and caps, most carrying multiple items, wait in line to pay for their purchases. Behind them are shelves of Mets caps.

By Alyson Krueger

On Friday morning, at 11:40 on the dot, hundreds of Mets fans flooded into the new team store at Citi Field in Queens. It was the opening day of baseball season, and they were the first ones into the new space, located in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, the grand entryway to the ballpark.

Susan Wiedeman, 65, from Riverdale, N.J., who has attended Mets opening day with her husband for the last 40 years, was giddy with the experience. “We were just about the first ones in,” she said. “That was really cool.”

At 10,000 square feet, the store is twice the size of its previous iteration and filled with new technology, art and merchandise. There are vastly higher ceilings — “Last year I could adjust a lightbulb myself if I needed,” said James Benesh, the executive director of consumer products for the Mets — and a hanging sculpture by Michael Murphy, an artist in Brooklyn. The orange sculpture has the Mets logo intertwined in different cityscapes.

Part of the new store’s appeal is the sheer size of its inventory. “There is a lot of stuff in here,” said Janet Conlon, 75, who lives in Hillsborough, N.J., and is a school bus driver. She already has a closet full of Mets apparel at home, including more than 40 baseball hats. On opening day she wore three layers of Mets clothes — “I don’t like to be cold,” she said — and carried a branded bag and blanket. Still, the store offered bountiful new options.

“I’ve never seen a lot of this stuff before,” she said, laughing. “It’s amazing.”

In the space where 12 T-shirts used to be on display, there are now 52, according to Mr. Benesh. There are also more than 3,000 baseballs on the shelves at any given time. And the store has 40 staff members, double the size that was previously needed.

But the Mets organization has also raised its game in terms of what it is selling, especially to female fans.

“We’ve been getting feedback for a few years now that female fans don’t necessarily want a man’s shirt turned into pink,” Mr. Benesh said.

The team is restricted to selling items from approved M.L.B. vendors, and it has tapped some of the licensed newcomers to make capsule collections sold exclusively at Citi Field. For instance, rather than ceding the market for vintage sportswear to Etsy or vintage stores, the Mets are offering those items in-house. Refried Apparel, a company that makes new clothes from salvageable old items, has a line of jean jackets with vintage Mets logos and numbers that are sold at the team store.

“There is a lot of waste within our industry,” said Joanna Mingo, who is the consumer products coordinator for the Mets. “We have players who get traded, and then we can’t sell their jersey. Now we can send them to this cool company, and they make something that looks like you would find it on Etsy made by a girl in her college dorm.”

Other smaller brands offer bedazzled bomber jackets, corduroy hats, sequined crop tops and satin windbreakers. Personalized jerseys and limited-edition merchandise are also sold, but exclusively to V.I.P. ticket holders.

“This is stuff I can wear out on a walk or to brunch, not just to games,” said Hannah O’Neill, 26, a nurse from Rockville Centre, N.Y., who was shopping the collection on opening day. “Two years ago, you wouldn’t be able to get any of this stuff.” She had her eye on a hat covered in flowers.

Others were frankly mesmerized by the new RFID self-checkout system. Shoppers dump their purchases into a bucket, and a computer reads a RFID price tag attached to the item. The items pop up on a screen, and the buyers tap their cards to pay. “There is no scanning,” Mr. Benesh said. “It goes much faster.”

Still, there were a few growing pains. Some shoppers called over store associates to help them navigate the system.

“I’ve heard a lot of people in line complaining about it, but I’m young and love self-checkout,” said Dani Wasserman, 27, who is studying for a graduate degree in film in Boulder, Colo., and whose dad grew up on Long Island. They bought a Francisco Alvarez jersey.

It was only the first day of a long shopping season for Mets fans, as Mr. Benesh reminded the store staff in a meeting just before the gates opened. “If you hear any feedback, bring it to us,” he said. “We have 79 more games to go after today.”

New York officials approve $780 million soccer stadium for NYCFC to be built next to Mets’ home

In 2027, New York City FC plans to open the first-ever soccer-specific stadium in New York City in Willets Point, Queens.

NEW YORK — New York City officials approved a plan Thursday to build a 25,000-seat stadium for Major League Soccer’s New York City Football Club next to the New York Mets’ stadium, Citi Field.

The $780 million soccer stadium, expected to open in 2027, will anchor a 23-acre (9-hectare) redevelopment project in the Willets Point neighborhood that will also include housing, a new public school, retail stores and a hotel.

The new stadium will be New York City’s first venue dedicated to professional soccer. NYCFC, which won the MLS championship in 2021, currently plays home games at Citi Field or at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

“Today’s City Council vote gets us one step closer to bringing this promise to life in Queens — the World’s Borough will be our home for The World’s Game,” the club’s vice chairman, Marty Edelman, said in a statement released by the city.

In addition to Citi Field, the soccer venue’s neighbors will include the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where the U.S. Open is played.

The City Council approved the new stadium after decades of failed efforts to transform Willets Point, long a gritty cluster of auto body shops.

City officials have said that the stadium will be privately financed by NYCFC’s owners, who include the Yankees and United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the owner of the Manchester City Football Club.

But the city’s Independent Budget Office concluded that the actual cost to taxpayers for the stadium could be $516 million spread over the 49-year term of NYCFC’s lease.

The analysis is based on what the city would have received in property taxes had it sold the land to the stadium’s developers instead of leasing it.

The development team includes Related Companies and Sterling Equities, which is partly controlled by the Wilpon family, who used to own the Mets.

Mets, Francisco Lindor

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor is off to a slow start this year. AP

  • Bridget Hyland | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Twelve games into the season and with a 5-7 record, some fans and media members are concerned about a slumping New York Mets player.

Fransisco Lindor is off to a slow start at the plate — worrying some fans, even this early in the season. The shortstop has five hits in 51 at-bats, including a hit in each of the past two games.

BUY METS TICKETS: STUBHUB , VIVID SEATS , TICKETMASTER

Speaking on WFAN on Thursday, host Brandon Tierney said Lindor’s best days could be in the past.

“I’m worried that he’s actually on the other side of his prime,” he said, via Audacy .

“Based on bat speed … he’s going to put up numbers that are probably in the neighborhood of what he did a year ago, but my issue with Lindor is that by the time he wakes up, the Mets might be dead.”

After starting the year 0-5, the Mets have won five of their next seven games. They beat the Braves twice in three games, including 16-4 on Thursday.

“When your bat speed as a switch hitter from the left side is discernibly slower than the right side, that is not just a funk to start the season,” Tierney said. “That is usually the beginning of the end.”

Is Lindor’s bat speed slower? It’s too early to say, however, the 30-year-old’s max exit velocity of 105 mph entering Thursday was the slowest of his career, per Statcast . He sported an 89.2 mph average exit velocity after last year’s 91.2 mph.

Lindor broke out Sunday when he went 2-for-3 with a home run in the 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds . He had one hit in his first 31 at-bats entering that game.

Before that, Mets owner Steve Cohen endorsed a fan’s suggestion of giving a standing ovation to Lindor the next time the Mets play at Citi Field. That would be this Friday against the Kansas City Royals .

“Love that idea,” he wrote . “It worked in Philly with Turner. Positivity goes a long way”
