Nespresso coffee capsules take the thinking out of making your morning cup of Joe. There are plenty of models available, but the Nespresso Essenza Mini is the most compact option in the current range. So if you’re tight for space, or even if you just want to keep your counters neat and streamlined, this model is worth considering.

It’s a small, good value coffee machine with just two buttons to deliver either espresso, or lungo coffee. The uncomplicated setup means it’s the perfect entry level machine. However,don’t expect it to steam milk or dispense boiling water, as this is the no-frills option.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Price and availability

The Nespresso Essenza Mini is a bargain price at $179/ £90. It’s available direct from Nespresso or via Amazon, as well as many other retailers both online and in store. It’s one of the cheapest Nespresso machines you can buy, as well as being one of the smallest. So whether it’s your budget or space that’s tight, this might be the Nespresso that ticks your boxes. 

It uses the Nespresso Original capsules which start at $0.80 for an espresso, or 39p if you’re in the UK. Capsules are readily available online, you can order direct from Nespresso as well as through plenty of other retailers such as Amazon and Walmart in the US.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Design 

The Nespresso Essenza Mini is available in gray, white, or black. These muted color options combined with its small size make this model a discreet and subtle addition to your kitchen counter. In fact, it’s so small it’ll slot neatly onto a shelf or in a pantry, without you even noticing it’s there. And at just 5lbs, it’s super lightweight and easy to move around.

It’s easy to use with just two buttons — one for espresso and one for lungo. So there’s no need to spend hours pouring over the manual to get to grips with how to use it. It’s designed to be simple and intuitive.

At the back of the machine you’ll find the removable 20oz water container. Flipping up the lid unlocks it from the base and allows it to be taken to the sink for cleaning or refilling. Bear in mind, there’s no handle, but since it’s so small, a handle isn’t really necessary. The clear, plastic design makes it easy to see the water level at a glance, and there is a max fill line that’s only visible once it’s removed.

The small drip tray is removable, which is handy since there’s only space for cups up to 3.5 inches/ 9 cm tall otherwise. This is fine for small espresso cups but for anything larger like a standard mug, you’ll need to remove the drip tray and place the mug directly on the counter. This allows space for mugs up to 5 inches/ 13 cm.

The used capsule bin is located just behind the drip tray, and sits on top of another drip tray to allow excess water to drain from the capsules. It might not be the most robust setup for used capsules, but it’s compact, does the job and slots together neatly.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Performance

Despite being a compact, simple machine, the Essenza Mini’s performance is comparable to similar models, such as the Nespresso Pixie . Once switched on, it heats up and is ready to go in around 28 seconds. The time to pour an espresso varied slightly between capsules, but on average it was around 22 seconds, while a lungo needed about 37 seconds. So regardless of brew size, it’ll be in your cup around one minute from switching on the coffee machine — making it convenient for busy mornings.

Coffee temperatures come out at approximately 151°F for an espresso and 157°F for a lungo which is typical of most Nespresso Original machines. And with a max reading of 70 dB on my noise meter, it’s one of the quietest Nespresso models I’ve recently reviewed.

Energy consumption is 0.005 kWh to pour an espresso, but when you include the energy it uses heating up, it comes to a total of 0.012 kWh. Again, this is pretty typical across the Nespresso range. In addition, it goes into sleep mode after 9 minutes of no use, to save energy.

The coffee flavor very much depends on the capsule you choose to use, and the crema consistency can also vary by capsule as well as cup width.. Generally, the crema isn’t thick, velvety and robust in the same way that you’ll get from a barista style machine. But with that said, I don’t think you’re buying this machine for gourmet coffee. What it does well is offer speedy, consistent coffee each time, without any mess and hassle.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Ease of use and cleaning

Since there’s no milk frother, controls are limited to just the two cup sizes, making this machine uncomplicated and effortless to use. Pushing either of the two buttons wakes it up, and both buttons flash during the warm up process. They then remain solidly lit when it’s ready to brew coffee.

The lever makes it easy to add your capsule while simultaneously dropping used capsules out into the container. The used capsule container can only hold six capsules, so needs to be emptied frequently. But, arguably when you buy such a compact machine, it would be unrealistic to expect it to have space for more. Similarly, the drip tray doesn’t have a big capacity, so it’s worth emptying this alongside the used capsules. Since they slide out of the front of the machine together, it does make sense to empty and clean both at the same time.

At the back, the small water container releases from the machine by flipping up the lid and tilting it. Repositioning it when full of water also requires flipping up the lid to get it to click back into position. While this feels awkward and fiddly at first, after doing it a few times, you get the hang of it.

There is a max fill line but not a minimum fill line on the water container, however the clear plastic makes it easy to see when the water is running low. If you forget to check the water level and try to dispense coffee while it’s empty, the machine will still attempt to brew the coffee, but nothing will come out. Bear in mind, there’s no alert or indicator to warn you that it’s out of water, so you will need to keep an eye on this.

In addition, there’s nothing in the manual to indicate that the removable parts can be cleaned in a dishwasher. But, since all the parts are so small, washing them by hand with hot soapy water is a speedy process.

The only other bit of maintenance is the descaling process, which you’ll have to perform after every 300 espressos if you live in a hard water area. The descaling process cleans and descales the inner workings of the coffee maker and it’s automatic. You simply add the descaling solution to the water tank, and follow the instructions in the manual for the button combination that starts the process. It’s simple and essential for keeping the machine in tip top condition. Unfortunately there's no alert or indicator to remind you when it’s time to descale, so you’ll have to create a calendar reminder instead.

Nespresso Essenza Mini review: Verdict

The biggest selling feature of the Nespresso Essenza Mini is undeniably its space-saving size, followed by its wallet-friendly price tag. It’s one of the smallest coffee machines I’ve ever reviewed — ideal for tiny homes or cluttered kitchens. In fact, it’s so small it’s likely that your stock of coffee capsules will take up more space than the appliance itself.

However, with the small size comes some compromises — like the small used capsule container, as well as the small water container. But, these are minor snags, which are to be expected. Like many other Nespresso machines, it doesn’t deliver premium barista quality espresso, but it’s good quality considering it’s from a capsule. Plus, you can enjoy a quick and easy coffee-making experience from a machine that won’t take over your kitchen. 

The Nespresso Pixie offers a similar size and comes at a slightly more expensive price of $229. There’s not much difference in the performance, but the metal side plates do give it a more sturdy feel. Alternatively, the Breville Nespresso Creatista Plus is worth checking out if you want a built-in milk frother. We found it created the perfect texture of frothed milk.

Nestle, a Swiss company you probably think of in connection with chocolate, owns and operates Nestle-Nespresso or just Nespresso as it is known here in the States. Actually, the word “Nespresso” comes from combining “Nestle” and “espresso.” Nespresso has been around for over 30 years, but it’s only been in the last 10 years that it has made a name for itself in the U.S. market. In a nutshell, Nespresso is to espresso what Keurig K-cup is to coffee. They are the original single-use coffee maker, and as the forerunner in single-cup coffee makers, theirs are one of the best!

Two Types of Nespresso Coffee Makers

Nespresso has two different lines of coffee makers.  The original line of Nespresso  espresso machines  and the  Vertuoline . The Vertuoline was created for the North American market, which prefers a larger American-style cup of coffee. In comparison, the original Nespresso makers were designed for espresso drinkers.

3 Key Differences Between the Original & Vertuoline

1) Coffee Sizes

The Original Nespresso machines have two options: Espresso & Lungo.  The Espresso option brews a 1.35oz espresso shot. The Lungo option brews a 3.7oz “long” espresso shot.

The Vertuoline coffee machines have 5 different size options: Alto (14oz), Mug (7.77oz), Gran Lungo (5oz), Double Espresso (2.7oz), and Espresso (1.35oz).

2) Brewing Technology

The Nespresso Original machines use the standard pump espresso machine technology that utilizes pressure to create an espresso shot.  The Nespresso Original machines use 19-bars of pressure to extract the espresso (a bar is a metric unit of pressure).  

The Nespresso Vertuoline machines use proprietary centrifugal technology to brew coffee.   Essentially, it spins your coffee capsule really fast while ejecting water into it. It also spins it after brewing to “dry” the capsule out.  

3) Coffee Capsules 

The Original Nespresso machines and Vertuoline coffee makers also use different coffee capsules based on the technology used to extract the coffee.  This is important to note for ordering your Nespresso capsules and because it affects both price and variety when it comes to purchasing your Nespresso coffee pods.

Vertuoline Capsules

The  Vertuoline capsules  are still under patent, so you are restricted to the Nespresso brand of coffee pods/capsules.  The Vertuoline capsules range in price from $0.85 to $1.25 per capsule.  

The Vertuoline capsules also use a barcode technology which the machine reads and then based on which type of pod it scanned, it then heats the appropriate amount of water designed for that specific pod.  This takes all the guesswork out of it for the customer. No more deciding on whether to choose a 6 oz or 8oz cup size. Instead, you pick your capsule, and the machine scans it and determines the optimal amount of water (and temperature) to brew that specific capsule.

Original Capsules

The  Original line  uses a small capsule that sort of looks like the little creamer capsules you get at breakfast diners. The main difference with the Original line is that in addition to Nespresso’s line of coffee pods, you can also purchase original capsules from coffee roasters such as Starbucks , LavAzza, Pete’s, Cafe Bustelo, and more.  Original coffee capsule prices typically range from $0.44 to $0.80.  

Spoiler alert:  The price per pod coupled with a choice in coffee roasters was a big factor in my choice to go with the Essenza Mini Original Nespresso maker. 

Which One Should You Buy?

  If you mainly drink large cups of coffee but also want the option for the occasional espresso, then go for one of the Vertuo line coffee machines. This is also a good choice for someone looking to replace the Keurig with a single-cup coffee machine that brews a stronger cup of coffee. If that sounds like you,  I recommend buying the  VertuoPlus . 

If you primarily want to make espressos and espresso-based drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, etc., I highly recommend the Essenza Mini . It’s the perfect espresso machine for beginners and those looking for a quick espresso option that doesn’t require learning to pull their own shots or get the perfect espresso grind. Easy peasy, no muss, no fuss, delicious espresso!

Nespresso Machines Brands

One final note on branding before I tell you all about the Nespresso Essenza Mini. You will notice the machines comes in a variety of brand names. The two most commonly seen are  De’Longhi  and Breville.  

The most important thing to note is the machine functions and features are essentially the same, even if the brands are not. 

There is no advantage (that I found) to one brand over the other. It comes down to aesthetics.  So choose whichever Nespresso coffee maker you like the looks of best, or whichever has the best price.

My Top Pick: The Nespresso Essenza Mini

Why i chose the essenza mini.

The short answer is, I wanted this for espresso, not for coffee.  I already have a  Keurig, Aeropress, and Chemex that I use to brew coffee, but what I didn’t have was an easy way to make espresso.  I also wasn’t ready to spend the money to buy a semi-automatic espresso machine which often cost $500 to $1,000 for a good one. I’m not ready for the learning curve that comes with grinding my espresso beans just right and pulling my shots and the maintenance involved with owning an espresso machine.  

The Nespresso Essenza Mini was exactly what I was looking for!  Plus, this makes it easy for my hubby and family and friends to make themselves an espresso quickly or at least make it easy for me to create them a latte or mocha on demand.  

What is a Nespresso Essenza Mini?

The Essenza Mini is an automatic espresso machine–a tiny one too! Its small size makes it easy to find space on just about any countertop.  In fact, it’s so compact that my hubby once had an executive visiting from Europe who packed his Nespresso machine with him!  Now that’s true dedication!

Essenza Mini Brewing Sizes

The Nespresso Essenza Mini brews two sizes of coffee.  Espresso (1.35oz) & Lungo (3.7oz).

An espresso is a type of coffee and also the method of brewing coffee. This is, of course, a very summarized answer. There is a ton of information on all the intricacies of what makes an espresso an espresso, but this is my short answer.  Specific types of coffee beans are used for brewing espresso, and the method for brewing espresso uses intense pressure to extract the flavor from the beans. This gives you the lushes crema and dark rich flavor of espresso.

Nespresso created a line of coffee capsules specifically tailored to create a delicious espresso.  They come in a range of intensity levels that correspond to your espresso’s bitterness and flavor profile.  The intensity ranges from 4-13. An intensity of 4 will result in a milder, more sweet flavor of espresso. The 13 will result in the highest level of intensity and create a stronger and more bitter flavor.

What is a lungo? Lungo in Italian means “long.”  A lungo is a long shot of espresso that uses extra water to pull the espresso shot through.  It also takes longer to “pull” the shot and creates an espresso with a somewhat milder flavor profile.  Lungos typically use a slightly different coffee grind too.  

Nespresso sells lungo-specific coffee capsules in addition to their espresso capsules. They also range in intensity from 4-10. You can also try their regular espresso capsules with the lungo brewing option. The flavor profile will be different, but you only live once, so feel free to give it a shot! (Do you see what I did there?) 

Ristretto (not given a brewing button, but it is a capsule option offered by Nespresso)

Now, to complicate it a little more, Nespresso also offers a ristretto Nespresso pod. A ristretto (“restricted” in Italian) pulls less water through a shot of espresso resulting in less bitterness. It also contains a little less caffeine than a standard shot of espresso.  You might wonder how you can make a ristretto with the Nespresso Essenza Mini, which only has two cup sizes? Keep reading below to find out how.

TIP: You can customize the amount of water released when you press either the espresso or lungo buttons!

It’s SO EASY! Perhaps, too easy to brew an espresso shot with the Essenza Mini.  In about 30-seconds, you have a delicious shot of espresso (or maybe two shots–thus the “too easy” part). 

Brewing Your First Espresso

• When you first receive your Essenza Mini, the instructions have you fill the water reservoir with filtered water. Then you’ll run 3 cups of water through the machine using the Lungo button to rinse it for initial use.  After you complete this step, you’re ready to brew your first cup of espresso.
• Fill the water reservoir and click it in place. 
• Press the espresso or lungo button to turn the machine on (it takes about 30 seconds to heat up initially).  The Essenza Mini has an auto-off feature and shuts itself off after 9-minutes of inactivity.
• Lift the lever on top of the Essenza Mini and insert an espresso capsule. (The Essenza Mini comes with a Nespresso sampler box of capsules.)  
• Close the lever and place a cup below.  You can remove the drip tray if you want to use a larger coffee mug for brewing.
• Press either the espresso button or the lungo button, depending on your preferred drink. You can stop the flow of coffee by pressing the button again during brewing.  After it finishes brewing, you can press the button again to create a weaker coffee by running water through the pod twice.
• Lift the lever on top to eject the capsule into the used capsule bin.  This bin holds up to 6 pods before you need to empty it.  You can empty the used capsule container by pulling on the drip tray. *Be careful, though, as there is also a drip attachment under the capsule container, which catches any liquid that comes off the used pods.  Sometimes this has liquid that spills out when you pull out the capsule tray.

Additional Equipment for Creating Espresso Drinks

If you want to use your Nespresso Essenza Mini to create lattes or cappuccinos, then consider purchasing a milk frother in addition to your espresso machine.  Some versions of the Essenza Mini come with an aeroccino milk frother like this one .  However, I purchased just the Essenza Mini machine as I already owned  this milk frother , and I love it! It also froths thick cold foam for those who enjoy iced coffee drinks like an iced caramel macchiato or iced lattes.

The other accessory I purchased was  this original capsule storage drawer .  My Essenza Mini sits on top of it along with my syrups and sugar, thus taking up no extra countertop space to store my Nespresso coffee pods.

This video from Nespresso explains how to customize your pre-programmed brew sizes to fit your coffee preferences. So, for example, if you prefer espresso and ristretto shots, you could program the “espresso” button to pull a smaller amount of water for ristretto shots and subsequently program the “lungo” button to pull an espresso shot.  It’s really up to you how you customize it based on your espresso drinking preferences.

How to Reset Water Amounts to Factory Settings

If you changed the factory-set water levels and now wish to change them back to the original factory settings (Espresso: 1.35oz, Lungo: 3.7oz), here is how to do it (you can also find these instructions in the Nespresso instruction booklet ).

With the Essenza Mini turned off, press and hold down the Lungo button for 5 seconds.

LEDs will blink fast 3 times to confirm the machine has been reset to factory settings.

LEDs will then continue to blink normally as it heats up until it is ready. – Steady Lights mean your Essenza Mini Nespresso machine is ready.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for a Nespresso coffee maker, in addition to the links I’ve given you above, you may also want to check on Bed Bath & Beyond to see if you can use their 20% off coupon for a better deal.  Also, if you’re a Costco member, check to see what specials they have on a Nespresso machine.  Last I checked, they had both an Original machine and a Vertuoline machine for sale online, but their inventory is always changing. 

Someday I may decide to spend the money on a semi-automatic espresso machine, but for now, I love how easy it is to create a fantastic espresso at the press of a button!  I especially love how easy it is to make an affogato on a hot summer day–so good!

At the end of the day, it came down to what I wanted this new coffee maker purchase for.  For me, that was espresso.  I wanted a quick way to make an espresso with as little fuss as possible.  I couldn’t be happier with my decision!

I've been using the Nespresso Essenza Mini for many years. It's currently the lowest-entry model in the Original range of coffee makers, meaning it's the most basic Nespresso machine you can get.

Nespresso is one of the biggest names in the world of at-home coffee making. Back in 1986, Nespresso released the first ever pod coffee machine after a Nestlé engineer wanted to recreate the dynamics of an espresso machine in a simple format for home use.

Now, the Swiss brand has an ever-growing collection of pod brewers, with some considered to be among the best single serve coffee makers available. They now have two ranges, too: the Original Line and the newer Vertuo Line that offers a completely new method of pod brewing. 

So, how does it compare to the best espresso makers ? Like all Nespresso machines, the Essenza Mini uses pods to brew espresso-like coffees at the touch of a button. And as it's more affordable than most, it could be one of the easiest ways to bring Nespresso brewing into your home.

I can confidently say that the Essenza Mini is a capable coffee machine, as I've been using it for so long, but I've run through everything it can and can't do to help you decide whether it's right for your kitchen counter. 

Dan has tested coffee from all sorts of machines including pod brewers, bean-to-cup and espresso machines. The Nespresso Essenza Mini is the primary coffee maker in their home, and has been for some time, meaning this review is not just an out-the-box experience.

Nespresso Essenza Mini: Key specs

My first impressions of the Nespresso Essenza Mini go all the way back to February 2019. It was the main coffee machine at home when I lived with my parents, even before I started enjoying coffee like I do now.

I've always appreciated the pod brewer's simplicity. Making a coffee, clearing out used pods and cleaning the machine are all easy tasks, and from the countless types of Nespresso pods I've tried, I'm yet to find one that doesn't taste good.

The coffee machine was handed down to me in 2022, and since then it has been the primary coffee maker in my home (aside from when I'm testing other machines). This is truly a testament to its durability, and the variety of flavors on offer from Nespresso from such a simple machine.

Nespresso Essenza Mini: Price & availability

The Nespresso Essenza Mini retails for $179. You can find it online at Nespresso , Amazon , Wayfair , and Sur La Table for around $179, or extra if you add a milk frother (such as the Aeroccino XL for just $109 on Nespresso ) with the machine. This means several milky brews like latte and cappuccino are easy to make at home in no time.

If the triangular design isn't for you, the Essenza Mini is also available in a sleeker, rectangular model. Both are identical in terms of specs, but with different aesthetics (and the rectangular design is twice as heavy). This alternative model also retails for $179 and can be found at Nespresso , Breville , Amazon , Williams Sonoma , and Target . 

It's one of the most affordable coffee machines you can buy from Nespresso: only the Vertuo Pop+ and the VertuoPlus are cheaper. It's the cheapest model in Nespresso's Original range, yet the coffee maker still has the same core functions as most Original models.

Nespresso Essenza Mini: Design

Emphasis on the 'mini' here: this is a compact coffee machine. It's 4.3 inches wide and 12.8 inches deep, and I know from years of experience that it takes up such little space on the kitchen counter that it's hardly noticeable when you're not using it. 

This is ideal for anybody with limited space, or for those of us who prefer a cleaner kitchen counter. It's available in black, red or green (and the rectangular model comes in grey, white or black), so you're able to find one that'll suit your kitchen's décor.

The Essenza Mini has two brew options: Espresso and Lungo. Essentially, this means you choose between small or large cups, and you select by pressing one of the two buttons on top of the machine. 

Turning the machine on also involves pressing either of the buttons. The button lights will flash for a minute or so as the coffee maker heats up, then once the lights stop flashing and are permanently on, the machine is ready to brew. After nine minutes of inactivity, the Essenza Mini will power off by itself.

The 20.3 oz water tank is removable and can pour around three to five cups before needing to be refilled. In response to a review on their website, Nespresso recommends filling the water tank with warm water as the machine doesn't guarantee a certain temperature — but this inconsistency is something that I've never personally noticed.

Loading up pods is as simple as the rest of the machine, and when you lift up the flap it releases the previously used pod. The pod holder and drip tray slide right out, and can hold six pods before it needs emptying.

Nespresso Essenza Mini: Performance

The key benefit to the Nespresso Essenza Mini is how simple it is, in every regard. It's easy to use, easy to clean, easy to empty, and it brews coffee at an impressive speed. Because of this, it's likely one of the most convenient coffee machines you could own, but with that comes a lack of customization as it doesn't do much else.

You can only brew two cup sizes, and neither of them are that large. Nespresso started as a company that produces pod-based espresso machines, so the two drinks on offer are essentially an espresso or double espresso. This means that, to make a fuller cup of coffee, you'll have to heat your own milk and add it yourself (or top it off with hot water, but I've found that this can make the coffee quite weak).

Saying that, it isn't too difficult to use Nespresso coffees as the foundation for more varied drinks. I brewed 8 easy barista coffees with this Nespresso machine using a milk frother, and there are ways to froth and heat your own milk without a dedicated device.

Drip tray & pod holder

The drip tray seems to be designed for espresso cups as there's very little space to accommodate anything larger than that. This isn't a problem if you're only planning on using the coffee machine for espressos and lungos, but if you're ever brewing a full cup with added water or milk, you'll need to remove the drip tray every time you want a coffee.

This isn't a big or time-consuming issue at all, but it's worth noting that removing the drip tray every time can result in the need for frequent wiping of your countertop, as the machine drips a lot after pouring a cup. Over time however, it's easy enough to time it so that this doesn't happen (as often, at least).

Nespresso pods

It's no secret that coffee pods can have a pretty damaging impact on the environment. If you live in New York City, your both Original and Vertuo pods can be recycled curbside in your blue bin. Alternatively, you can order recycling bags with your subscription to Nespresso, or drop at your nearest Nespresso Boutique.

This is a great step, but as with any recycling, depends on people's efforts. So until curbside recycling is widely available, a number will inevitably end up in landfills.

Nespresso Essenza Mini: Taste test

At this point, I've made countless coffees with the Essenza Mini. I often buy the Nespresso assortment packs too, so that I can mix up my morning coffees.

After using a Nespresso machine for years, I can confidently say that the pods produce good coffee. There are currently more than 40 different types of Original coffee pods (and 30+ Vertuo pods), and I'm yet to find one that didn't taste like good-quality coffee.

Of course, with such a vast range there are some pods that I've found to be a little too weak or strong to my liking, but it never tastes poor quality. This, to me, is what makes Nespresso stand out as a pod coffee brand. They source coffee beans from around the world, offering a variety of strengths that all taste great.

I'm not a big espresso drinker, so I often heat up milk in the microwave for around 40 seconds before brewing the Nespresso coffee on top. I've found this to be an easy way to get fuller cups of coffee from a machine that exclusively brews espressos and lungos.

And, if you're a fan of more indulgent coffees, you can use the machine's espressos as the foundation for milkier drinks like lattes, flat whites and cappuccinos. I used a milk frother from the JURA GIGA 10 to brew 8 easy barista coffees with my Nespresso machine , but you can also froth and heat milk at home with a microwave and a glass jar. 

Thanks to the quality of the espresso poured by the pods in the Essenza Mini, these coffees tasted similar to those you'd get at a coffee shop. The coffee never tasted weak when combined with milk, even when it came to drinks like the latte macchiato which is mostly milk.

Pod machines are among the most convenient ways to enjoy coffee at home, and the Nespresso Essenza Mini is about as easy as it gets. Press a button to turn it on, then press again moments later to pour a cup when the machine is ready. 

You're a fan of espresso and have no espresso machine barista skills

Nespresso is first-and-foremost an espresso brand, and the Essenza Mini can brew espressos and lungos (double espressos) at the touch of a button. Espresso machines offer more customization and fine-tuning if you know how to use one, but a Nespresso machine can pour great-tasting cups by itself. 

You have your own milk frother

Combining the Nespresso Essenza Mini with a milk frother opens the door to barista drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. Espresso is the foundation of these milky beverages, and the Nespresso machine takes all the work out for you, so that all you need to do is heat, froth, and pour the milk. 

 Don’t buy it if…  

You want customization and large cups of coffee

You can only brew two cup sizes with the Essenza Mini, and neither of them are very big. Customizing coffees from the Essenza Mini requires other tools too, whereas there are machines out there that can do it all in one. 

You want to source your own coffee beans

Nespresso offer a great deal of choice when it comes to coffee pods (the Original range has over 40 options), but that's limited compared to the number of different coffee beans out there. You can't grind your own beans to your preferences with this pod machine, and you're restricted to the pre-packaged pods.

How does the Nespresso Essenza Mini compare?

The Essenza Mini is such a strong coffee maker as it can do what most Nespresso Original machines can, for a fraction of the price. More expensive Original machines offer bigger water tanks and milk frothers, but you have to get towards the top of the range to find models that can brew more than espressos and lungos. 

Thanks to the milk frother, the Nespresso Lattissima One can brew cappuccinos and latte macchiatos as well as espressos and lungos. The Creatista Plus has a steam wand for latte art, and offers more flexibility in terms of how you can use the machine. Both of these alternatives cost $100s more, and you can achieve similar results for a lot less by investing in your own milk frother and steam wand. 

On the other end, the best Keurig coffee makers are much cheaper than their Nespresso counterparts. They generally offer more cup-size options too, but they don't often get praised on flavor as much as Nespresso machines do. The K-Slim is a more affordable alternative, and the K-Duo can brew both cups and carafes of coffee for a similar price.

How I tested the Nespresso Essenza Mini

• Tested intermittently for over three years, then used as the primary coffee machine for over a year
• Tested using a wide variety of Nespresso coffee pods

The Nespresso Essenza Mini was the primary coffee machine in my family home for three years, during which I used it on-and-off whenever I drank coffee at home.

Cute little machine suitable for my one person office

Terrific mini coffee machine for home and office. Easy to use and great coffee!

Easy to set up. However, using the cup stand does not allow for a small mug to be placed flat on the stand. Used it without the stand. Not sure when purchased (probably within the last 2 months) but the capsules that came with it were well past best before date. Manufactured 31/8/22, best before date 31/7/23.

I think I read somewhere that large bags have to be checked in at a cloakroom when visiting the Kremlin, what counts as a large bag or do all bags have to be checked in? Do you need to do this before you queue for tickets?

We had small backpacks and they had to be handed in. Then you go and queue for your tickets.

Handbags (ladies' purses and small camera bags) are permitted, but backpacks and larger bags must be checked. When you go through security, the officer will glance inside your handbag to make sure all is OK.

Checking my husband's backpack was no problem. The check room outside the Kremlin is large. There were no lines either at check in or at pick up.

Leave them at the hotel if you can. AIM.

we were in the Kremlin 10 days ago and we had to check out backpacks. The one thing to remember is the bag check in closes at 6 p.m. so it is up to you to make sure you are back at the baggage check by that time. Also, towards the end of the day, the line to retrieve items can be quite long because everyone is waiting until the last minute to pick up their bags. Depends on how crowded they are
