Hidden treasures of North Bengal

Photo of Manikuntala Das

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by.

-Robert Frost

Choosing the less traveled path, I headed towards a lesser known destination which turned out to be completely amazing. The year 2015 started with a bang and I was just waiting for my first trip. A completely unplanned one, just a week before the long weekend in January (23rd- 26th), I decided that we should definitely go somewhere and hence came forth the idea of travelling to North Bengal. Now, North Bengal as a tourist spot remains at the hit list of any Bong traveler. There is hardly any Bengali travel lover who has not been to Darjeeling in his vacations. Many of us have traveled to North Bengal numerous times but this time, I wished to visit any under-explored and offbeat destination of North Bengal. Two roads diverged from Teesta Bazaar. One led to the most popular Darjeeling and the second one led us to the place of serene beauty and mesmerizing views, Baramangwa.

Here’s my itinerary:

  • Day 1: NJP to Baramangwa
  • Day 2: Baramangwa -Delo- Baramangwa
  • Day 3: Baramangwa- Chotamangwa
  • Day 4: Chotamangwa- NJP

We got down at New Jalpaiguri station and started our journey towards Baramangwa in a Tata Sumo along NH 31A. Baramangwa, in the local language, means “big land of finger millets” and Chotamangwa which is at a distance of 1km from this place means “small land of finger millets”.

Baramangwa is a small village situated at a distance of 60kms from Siliguri . It took hardly around two hours and a half to reach the place. Many people might not have even heard about this place, but this hidden beauty is really precious. I considered it to be a perfect place for the adventure seekers and nature lovers. People who wish to go on a retreat for sometime in order to avoid the hustle bustle of daily lives, can come here and spend some time admiring the gifts of nature. We were accommodated in a farm house that is perched on a mountain slope with forests and trees all around. After lunch, we decided to explore this beautiful village which is situated in the district of Darjeeling towards the western side of Kalimpong hills. The village is a home to a few terraced farms, orange gardens and very few people.

The rooms of the guest houses offer you amazing views of the hills and different types of mountain birds. Tripping in the terraced farms was an amazing experience and after that we headed to check out the orange orchard which is the main attraction of this place.

The orchard was named after Anita Gurung, sister of Mr. Gurung who manages the entire orange orchard. Apart from numerous orange trees around, he also showed us many different plants like coffee, pumpkin, tea, pomelo and various flowering plants. After visiting the entire garden, we had some chit chat with Mr. Gurung and his family. His wife, a really humble lady, offered us some freshly made orange juice. It is so much fun to go to a place and then interact with the locals out there; we come to know so many different things about their lifestyle and culture.

After taking the nature walks, we returned back and sat in the balcony enjoying the calmness of the place. The scenic beauty during the night is mesmerizing when we could see the lights from the other hills around. Oh yes, we could even spot the southern hills of Sikkim from there.

We reserved the second day of our trip to check out the nearby attractions of this place. There are various places around where the guests can visit. The nearby locations include: Tinchuley Sunrise Point (9kms), Peshok Tea Garden (15kms), Kalimpong (21kms), Teesta and Rangit Confluence (8kms), Mongpoo (20kms), Delo (33kms) and Loleygaon (68kms). We decided to head towards Delo.

Delo is located at a height of 5556ft and it is famous for its beautiful nature park. The main attraction of the place is the view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and the River Teesta. One can also try out paragliding in Delo just as we did and it is one of those memorable experiences which will stay with your forever. Spending the day lazily in the nature park feels really amazing. If you wish, then you can also stay there for a day or so by booking the GTA bungalow on top of the hill. We, then, proceeded towards Kalimpong in order to grab some souvenirs and shop a little bit. Apart from amazing woollens, you are going to be crazy after having some food from the bakeries out there. After all the adventure and fun, we returned to Baramangwa.

On the third day, we commenced our journey towards Chotamangwa. A charming village, even quieter than Baramangwa and richer in the scenic beauty, is a perfect place to feel nothingness around you. The village is located amidst the orange gardens and offers a beautiful view of Mount Kanchenjunga. There is a small monastery situated downhill and the pleasing hymns of the monastery are heard all throughout the village. This induces a really good feel within oneself. These are relatively new destinations, so the places are less disturbed and less polluted. After spending the night of calmness there, we headed back to New Jalpaiguri the next morning and hence, our trip came to an end.

There are many more hidden treasures in North Bengal that can offer you the unparalleled beauty of nature. No running about to the sightseeing points, no need to wait in queues, all you need to do here is to relax. Okay and one more confession, these places can transfer a normal girl like me into a poetic frame of mind. The fresh air, the green hills and the beautiful flora and fauna will make you fall in love with the place. This is one of the best places where I have been for my weekend retreat and I can go there again and again just to enjoy the nothingness of the place.

North Bengal Tour

Rajkumar Samanta

Hailing from humid Kolkata, Sikkim, and Darjeeling occupies a special place inside us apart from being the nearest hill station. NatureWings was recommended to me by my brother in law who went to the Silk Route with them. I booked my trip for December 2019, and Mr. Akash from NatureWings actively took my call and provided me with a personalized itinerary. Their service was swift and even allowed me to make some changes on the trip. Our driver Mr. Tamang was a friendly person who treated and guided us very well, and his car was comfortable and well maintained. We got good view rooms, and the food served at both the places was fresh and hot. My trip went flawlessly, and thanks to the NatureWings team for their effort to make our trip a memorable one.

Silk Route Tour

Ankita Saha

Being a solo woman traveler, it is not easy to find a trusted travel agency, and as I had previously gone for a Bhutan Package Tour with NatureWings so thought of visiting the Silk route with them. NatureWings Silk Route specialist Mr. Akash provided me with an excellent budget-friendly itinerary covering the best sightseeing places and also allowed me to make the changes I urged. All my queries were answered patiently by him, and as I was traveling alone, so he provided me a good driver who guided me well and followed my custom itinerary. The wooden cottages booked for me in the green valley of Kolakham was beautiful, and the view from my room was like a dream come true, as I saw Mt. Kanchenjunga standing head up high from my balcony with floating clouds passing by. Mr. Indrajeet booked good, safe rooms near to the reception and made sure to make comfort calls every day. Kolakham and Charkhole have a charm of its own, smiling people, far from the crowded cities, in the lap of untouched nature with picturesque views of the mountains that we could only dream. I would love to explore other destinations with NatureWings and recommend others also.

Paren provides breathtaking views of the surroundings since it is blessed with hilly regions with luxuriant green woods, meandering rivers, and stretches of agricultural fields.

Paren is one of the most sought-after and unusual locations in North Bengal because of its beautiful green forests, rocky terrain, and mountain rivers.

The Rachella Pass is the most well-known of the various trekking routes in Paren. Just 10 km separates us from Jaldhaka.

  • Distance: 112 km from Siliguri

How to get there?

Malbazar is the closest Railhead. Travel to Chalsa from there, and then take a vehicle to Paren.

Village strolls and time spent on nature trips to the neighboring towns of Todey and Tangta provide breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. Additionally, you may go to adjacent sites like Bindu and Jaldhaka.

Singtom Tea Estate

Taste the beauty of Dooars offbeat places at Singtom Tea Estate. There is a view of the mountains outside the Singtom Suite’s private entrance.

The Singtom Tea Estate and Resort offers one of the top tea tourist experiences close to Darjeeling. Singtom tea plantation, one of the oldest in the Darjeeling region, is approximately 6 kilometers from Darjeeling town.

The location saw the beginning of a tea plantation in 1852, and the bungalow was built there around 1862.

A weekend of relaxation in the middle of mountains and tea plantations is perfect here.

The bungalow at the tea resort has one of the greatest views of Kanchenjunga, one of its primary attractions.

You may thus tour the many acres of tea gardens and enjoy some of the nicest vistas of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga peaks.

Of course, fresh Darjeeling Tea is available in infinite quantities.

You may take a tour of the tea estate’s tea factory, go tea picking, sample tea, and have a picnic at the 360-degree point.

  • Distance: 74 km from Siliguri.

Ways to get there?

The shared sumos to Darjeeling depart from NJP or Siliguri. To get to SIngtom Tea Estate, located about 6 km from Darjeeling, you must rent a car.

What should I do after getting there?

Enjoy your stay in a tea bungalow, a trek through the countryside, a picnic at the 360-degree point, a factory tour, a tasting tour, and a tour of the tea pickings.

Bunkulung is one of the high demand Dooars offbeat places and known for its tea plants, waterways, and charming town. There are also vast fields of cardamom and paddy. Bunkulung, roughly 15 miles from Mirik, is a haven for those who enjoy the outdoors.

You may climb to the riverside, stroll around the hamlet, and visit the tea gardens. Accommodations at Bunkulung Eco Huts are the best.

  • Distance: 40 km from Siliguri

How to go to Bunkulung?

Take shared sumo to Mirik from Siliguri. Hire a vehicle at Mirik and drive to Bunkulung.

A direct route through Dudhia runs from Siliguri to Bunkulung as well. Although it is a quicker trip, you must rent a complete automobile for it.

dooars offbeat places

Tabakoshi is the perfect location if you want to spend some time in the tea gardens and enjoy first-rate service.

The Gopaldhara Tea estate is only 8 km downhill from Tabakoshi. Verdant hills and lush tea gardens surround the area.

Visit Sunakhari Homestay and take advantage of their hospitality. You can set up camp next to the river as well. It’s the ideal location for a weekend of relaxation.

Visit tea estates like Gopaldhara, Thurbo, and Sangma, stroll through the tea gardens, and camp alongside the Rangbhang River.

The majority of us had stopped at Kurseong en route to Darjeeling. Singell is one of the special Dooars offbeat places and a little village surrounded by farms and tea plantations about 2 kilometers from Kurseong town.

A comfortable spot to stay is Singell Homestay, positioned right at the edge of the cliff.

From Hill Cart Road, a short detour will take you to the guest house.

The nicest feature of staying at Singell is watching the toy train chug directly from the homestay’s balcony.

We would practically wait for the Darjeeling toy train’s departure time to see the chugging trains. The Darjeeling toy train is a timeless sight to behold!

Tea gardens line the village’s perimeter. You can hike down to Singell Tea Estate to learn everything there is to know about making tea.

  • Distance: 40 km from Siliguri

How do you get to Singell?

You can take the shared sumo to Kurseong from Siliguri. It’s only 3 km from Singell. Both hire a car, and walking can get you to the homestay.

Visit the Singell tea factory to view the tea picking and processing process, stroll through the tea gardens, and take village walks.

Additionally, you can go to the close-by tea estates of Castleton, Makaibari, Goomtee, and Ambootia.

Additionally, go to the 14 km away Bhangzang Salamander Lake.

Among Dooars offbeat places, Rangaroon is famous for its mysterious beauty. A sleepy town called Rangaroon is perched among hills and clouds.

Only 16 km separate the location from Darjeeling.

Rangaroon, surrounded by tea estates and forests, is the ideal vacation spot for those seeking adventure, seeing wildlife, and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a few days.

The homestay has a charming, lovely appearance, and the hosts offer unrivaled hospitality.

The best part for us was the view of Darjeeling town, and the Kanchenjunga ranges from the homestay. What more could we ask for?

  • Distance: 67 km from Siliguri.

How do you get to Rangaroon?

Take shared sumo to Darjeeling from Siliguri and get off at Jorebunglow. Hire a car to get to Rangaroon from there. About 8 km separate Rangaroon and Jorebunglow.

What should I do after getting there?

Visit the Mata Singha Temple, the abandoned tea mill, the town, and the tea gardens. For a half-day picnic, hike to the bank of the Rundung River.

The main features of Bagora include mountains, mist, and unspoiled nature.

Bagora, a charming village hidden at 7150 feet above sea level, is a location where you may unwind and re-energize.

At Bagora, things moved slowly, and we appreciated the town’s charming old-world atmosphere.

The only thing to do in Bagora is walking around the village.

The blanket of green grass is there to calm your soul, while the mountains are simply there for your eyes to see.

A few hiking paths lead from Bagora to Chimeni, Chatakpur, and Latpanchar for individuals who enjoy hiking.

  • Distance: 58 km from Siliguri.

Tourist Places Near Dooars - hungry tourer
