10 classic old florida attractions (that you can still visit).

By Gary McKechnie

Long before there were super-sized theme parks, Florida attractions were based largely on the state’s exotic natural beauty, wildlife, and crystal clear springs.

While not every classic attraction had staying power (Cypress Gardens, The Atomic Tunnel, and Six Gun Territory among them), several have made their way into the 21 st Century by reminding guests that sometimes simple pleasures are the best.

Here are 10 old Florida attractions that were part of Florida’s past, made it to the present and, hopefully, we’ll enjoy well into the future.

first of the old Florida attractions

~ A Florida Memory

1. Silver Springs (1888)

Ocala (352) 261-5840

Back in the 1880s, a fellow named Hullam Jones put a pane of glass in the bottom of a rowboat and charged passengers five cents apiece to ferry them above the clear waters of Silver Springs .

Florida had its first tourist attraction.

In 2013, Silver Springs became a state park that retained the essence of this old Florida attraction. To this day, guests can still board the famous glass-bottom boats at the Silver Springs Nature Theme Park and observe the crystal-clear world below before sailing downriver and into the surrounding woodlands.

With other activities such as a museum, historic village, equestrian trails, and wildlife, it’s only natural to want to stay a little longer. You can do that, too, with a campground and cabins that provide a perfect opportunity to experience Florida’s original theme park.

Bok Tower

~ Gary McKechnie for VISIT FLORIDA

2. Bok Tower (1929)

Lake Wales (863) 676-1408

Recalling his grandmother’s admonition to “Make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it,” Dutch immigrant Edward Bok and his wife, Mary Louise, used part of their fortune (some from his role as editor of the Ladies Home Journal ) to create one of the most serene and peaceful places in Florida.

Set high atop 298-foot Iron Mountain in Lake Wales, Bok Tower is a 205-foot Gothic Revival and Art Deco masterpiece of pink Etowah marble, gray Creole marble, and coquina stone. Each afternoon from the “Singing Tower” the sound of the 60-bell carillon rings out, its music drifting over the hillside and flowing through the lush 250-acre botanical gardens.

Come here and stroll paths lined by live oaks, sabal palms, magnolias, and thousands of flowers, search for more than 100 bird species, or visit during a special orchestral performance and you’ll find more reasons to fall in love with this oasis of calm. Even better, you’ll see how the world became more beautiful because Edward Bok lived in it.

Old Florida attractions - Monkey Jungle

3. Monkey Jungle (1933)

Redland (305) 235-1611

Although the tagline “Where humans are caged and monkeys run wild” may seem a bit grating by today’s standards, in the advertising standards of the 1930s it was a clever way to let tourists know they were in for a unique experience at Monkey Jungle .

When you walk through the 30-acre zoological park, the novelty is walking through a fenced tunnel. On the opposite side of the fence are approximately 300 primates bouncing between branches, shinnying up ropes and trees, and often looking to you for a handout of food.

Among the experiences within the protected habitat are shows and sometimes even closer encounters at the Wild Monkey Swimming Pool, the Cameroon Gorilla Forest, the Amazonian Rain Forest, Wings of Love, and Hangin’ with the Orangs.

old florida attraction Jungle Island

4. Jungle Island (1936 - formerly Parrot Jungle)

Watson Island, Miami (305) 400-7000

By 1936, Miami was finding its identity. In addition to the sun and sand of South Beach, entrepreneurs started to recognize the city’s appeal was also in the untouched swamps and woods that bordered the city.

That’s what prompted Franz and Louise Scherr to lease 22 acres of land (at $25 per year) to create an attraction where tourists could walk along a nature trail lined by native plants and see colorful birds flying free.

For nearly 70 years Parrot Jungle was a part of Miami’s Pinecrest community until the village purchased the land to use as a municipal park. But Parrot Jungle wasn’t finished. Instead, it was moved to Watson Island (between downtown and South Beach off the MacArthur Causeway), renamed Parrot Jungle Island and, in 2007, simply Jungle Island .

What the Scherrs began those many years ago is still the basis for this zoological attraction. Guests still see colorful parrots and macaws (some of which perform in bird shows) as well as Miami’s iconic pink flamingoes along with snakes, vultures, condors, alligators, kangaroos, tigers, and orangutans. There are even overnight slumber parties and animal interactions – all within sight of cosmopolitan Miami.

Mermaids

5. Weeki Wachee Springs (1947)

Weeki Wachee (352) 592-5656

If the phrase ‘Florida kitsch’ came with a visual, it would likely be Weeki Wachee, the Old Florida attraction that gained international attention thanks to underwater shows starring honest-to-goodness mermaids .

Weeki Wachee didn’t start out as a place where mermaids frolicked. It began as a way for a stunt swimmer named Newt Perry to demonstrate air hose breathing techniques. When this proved to be popular, a 400-seat theater with a wall of underwater windows allowed guests to watch shows that, naturally, came to include mermaids. The attraction became so popular that Don Knotts, Esther Williams, and Elvis Presley stopped by for a visit – although not at the same time.

In 2008, the 538-acre attraction became part of Weeki Wachee State Park that continues to provide the support it needs to delight new generations of visitors. Families can fill the day at neighboring Buccaneer Bay water park, but purists most love visiting the original attraction where mermaids are still swimming, animal shows still entertain and educate, and guests escape the pressures of life by canoeing, kayaking, and taking river boat cruises on the Weeki Wachee River.

Classic Florida.

One of the few Old Florida attractions still owned by the founding family, Gatorland continues to attract visitors who visit the 110-acre “Alligator Capital of the World” to see hundreds of alligators and crocodiles, ride a miniature railroad, speed down a zip line, and take in reptile shows, an aviary, petting zoo, gator wrestling, and the ever-popular Gator Jumparoo Show.

- A Florida Memory

6. Gatorland (1949)

Kissimmee (800) 393-5297

When Owen Godwin opened Gatorland on the outskirts of Orlando in 1949, he knew that alligators and snakes would thrill tourists. They still do. One of the few Old Florida attractions still owned by the founding family, Gatorland continues to attract visitors who visit the 110-acre “Alligator Capital of the World” to see hundreds of alligators and crocodiles, ride a miniature railroad, speed down a zip line, and take in reptile shows, an aviary, petting zoo, and the ever-popular Gator Jumparoo Show.

One of the most thrilling experiences happens after dark during Gator Night Shine. After a Show & Tell featuring some creepy creatures (including spiders, snakes, and scorpions), a wildlife expert will lead you across a boardwalk through the nearly pitch-black breeding marsh where white egrets speckle the branches.

Still thrilling after all these years.

Dolphin jumping

- ~ A Florida Memory

7. Gulfarium (1955)

Destin (850) 243-9046

With the Gulf of Mexico just a few yards away, Florida’s oldest continuously operating marine park enjoys the perfect location for guests to learn more about the world’s waters and its inhabitants. Taking pride in its past, the Gulfarium notes that it was the first marine park to perform underwater shows with SCUBA gear and the first to successfully raise a stranded baby bottlenose dolphin on a synthetic milk formula developed here (and still used today).

More than 60 years later, the park continues to focus on sea-life-themed shows and exhibits including performances by trained porpoises and sea lions. Other members of their menagerie include otters, penguins, stingrays, alligators, harbor seals, and sharks, with special programs including Animal Adventures, Sunset Camp, and the VIP Trainer program that can get you even closer to some interesting wildlife.

While it may not have the flash of more modern parks, Gulfarium’s simplicity is part of its charm.

Seaquarium

8. Miami Seaquarium (1955)

Miami (305) 361-5705

The 1950s must have been great in Miami as the city became a haven for jet-setters, and a place where post-modern design was changing the skyline. Over on Virginia Key in Biscayne Bay, the futuristic Golden Aquadome marked the arrival of the Miami Seaquarium .

At the time, this was the world’s largest marine life attraction – and possibly the most popular. Not only was it one of Florida’s few themed attractions , in the 1960s the park got a big boost by being one of the prime shooting locations for the hit TV show ‘ Flipper’ .

Fast forward to today and you’ll find the park still celebrates bottlenose dolphins as well as sharks, sea turtles , penguins, dolphins , seals, orcas, manatees and thousands of colorful reef fishes that inhabit a 750,000-gallon saltwater aquarium. In addition to shows, the park has become a popular spot for wildlife experiences including the Seal Swim, Sea Trek Reef Encounter, Dolphin Encounter, and the Trainer for a Day program.

Citrus Tower

9. Citrus Tower (1956)

Clermont (352) 394-4061

When the iconic Citrus Tower opened on the outskirts of Orlando, it was to showcase and celebrate Central Florida’s sprawling citrus industry, seen in rolling hills of endless groves speckled with freshwater lakes.

Back in the day, a half-million tourists a year stopped by as they drove between Silver Springs and Cypress Gardens via U.S. 27. More than a half-century later, though, most of those groves are gone, victims of back-to-back freezes and rampant development. Instead of groves, asphalt rooftops, strip malls, and box stores now dominate the view from the top of the 226-foot-tall tower.

Although the views from Florida’s highest observation point may not be awe-inspiring, if you visit you’ll still see a towering example of Old Florida history.

Lion Country

10. Lion Country Safari (1967)

Loxhatchee (561) 793-1084

The world’s first “drive-through zoo” opened as an attraction where you could (and still can) cruise through 640 acres of South Florida plains and see tapirs, llamas, storks, kudus, impalas, white rhinos, gemsboks, water buffalo, lions, wildebeests, chimpanzees, and giraffes -- an ark-load of animals.

It’s really a simple concept, the vision of five South African businessmen who believed that South Florida was a perfect place to give animals room to roam and people a chance to see them.

When you go, you’ll pay admission to spend a few hours driving down dirt roads watching animals be themselves. Even motorcyclists and owners of convertibles can participate since a zebra-striped Lion Country Safari vehicle can be rented for the round trip.

Mornings are good time to visit (before the animals seek shade) and when it rains the showers get the animals up and around. After your tour, an amusement park, full-service restaurant, wet play area, petting zoo, and a KOA campground are right here.

Off-the-beaten-path getaways: Nine Old Florida towns make great bases

By: Author Bonnie Gross

Small Old Florida towns that are charming and close to hiking, biking, kayaking and historic sites

Rambling around Florida, I’ve found a few spots that I consider outstanding places to stay while enjoying areas that are rich in natural beauty and history.

When I’ve visited  them, I found myself saying: “Well, I can’t do everything here; I’ll have to get back here again soon.” Some I have visited over and over. Others are on my list of places I hope to return.

One of the most picturesque Old Florida towns: Historic Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island.

Each offers a variety of activities within an hour’s drive.

As you plan your travels and outings in Florida, consider these Old Florida destinations:

Cedar Key: Out of the way, and better for it

old florida towns cedar key docks Off-the-beaten-path getaways: Nine Old Florida towns make great bases

Despite the natural beauty of its location, Florida’s second oldest town (after St. Augustine, of course) has avoided too much commercial development.  Cedar Key has been named one of the 10 coolest towns in America and is often compared to a Key West a half century ago. Of all the Old Florida towns on my list, it has the most charming downtown, the longest history and the most artsy ambiance.

We loved staying in the historic hotel on the main drag, the Cedar Key Island Hotel, and as a leading producer of farmed clams, Cedar Key is a great place to eat seafood.

In the area around Cedar Key, there is an abundance of natural resources. I want to return to kayak around the nearby islands, some of which have excellent beaches. One of those islands, Atsena Otie, is a ghost town with an old cemetery and a few ruins — just the sort of place I live to explore!

It’s a top birding location and there are many hiking and biking options. And after dark, gaze at the skies: There is little light pollution here and the night sky sparkles with stars.

Lake Placid, Sebring and Avon Park: Exploring the Lake Wales Ridge

Lobby, historic Hotel Jacaranda in Avon Park

A million years ago, the only part of Florida poking out a vast ocean was a stretch of high ground in Central Florida along what is now U.S. 27. (And with rising sea levels, maybe that’s the place to invest in Florida real estate today!)

Like an island, the high ground that remains has some vegetation you won’t find elsewhere.

Florida’s Turnpike sucked most of the traffic off the old route along 27, leaving a few of these Old Florida towns intact along the Lake Wales Ridge. They’re charming, with old hotels that were once grand places to winter in Florida and are now atmospheric and affordable.

What I like best are the many park and preserves where you can hike, kayak, camp and explore. There is a funky Florida winery with colorful free-range chickens, a state park that preserves huge ancient trees and a wild and pristine creek that is safe from development because it forms of the border of an active bombing range.

We’ve been back to this area several times, and still haven’t explored it all.

Here are resources for exploring these Old Florida towns and the Lake Wales Ridge area, which contain details and many links to other places to explore:

  • Lake  Placid  charms with clowns, caladiums, good eatin’ and great stories
  • 7 fun and funky things to do in Lake Wales
  • An affordable historic hotel: Jacaranda Hotel in Avon Park
  • Exploring the Lake Wales Ridge

  • Ancient trees preserved in one of Florida’s first state parks, Highland Hammocks
  • Terrific hiking at Tiger Creek Preserve , Babson Park
  • More great hiking at Lake Wales Ridge State Forest
  • Beautiful kayaking river along a bombing range: Arbuckle Creek

Brooksville: The Withlacoochee and Weeki Wachee and more

Cypress forest along Withlacoochee State Trail in the Croom Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest.

An hour north of Tampa, surrounded by beautiful rivers and forests, the Brooksville area makes a good base for exploring a part of Florida that is rural and wild.

It’s an Old Florida town with a statue of a Confederate soldier in front of its courthouse and blueberry farms in the surrounding countryside. The downtown is a walk back in time, with historic buildings and grand live oak trees.

Nearby, Chinsegut (pronounced ChinSEEgut) Hill Historic Site in Brooksville is a well-preserved pre-Civil War plantation that looks like your stereotype of the grand white-columned  Gone with the Wind  mansion. But that period is just one chapter in a story full of colorful characters, as the estate becomes the home in the 20 th  Century of suffragists and labor union activists. You can take guided tours on weekends.

The reasons I love Brooksville are many, because of all the natural features nearby: The Withlacoochee is a pristine river full of wildlife and scenery, the 46-mile- long Withlacoochee Trail is the best paved bike trails I’ve pedaled in Florida, and the quiet and shaded Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is eye-opening and thought-provoking. There’s also good hiking at Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area.

Brooksville is also a good base for exploring some of Florida’s most beautiful springs: Weeki Wachee springs and river and its kitschy historic Weeki Wachee mermaid show plus, a little north of there, the Chassahowitzka River.

There’s even more. There are a few mom-and-pop motels in Brooksville, but most places to lodge are flavorless hotels along I-75. Campsites are plentiful. A great place to eat is the   Florida Cracker Kitchen .

You could spend an hour just browsing all the stuff at the Grumbles Antique and Garden Shop in Dunnellon. (Photo: David Blasco)

Dunnellon: Two rivers plus outstanding bike trail and hiking

You’d never know it now, but the little town of Dunnellon in northwest Florida was once so prosperous that its nickname was Boomtown. Today Dunnellon’s fame – and fame probably overstates it – is as the home of the spectacular Rainbow Springs and Rainbow River. In summer, thousands of people come here every week to float down the Rainbow River on inner tubes.

But there are more things to do in Dunnellon than kayaking or tubing the Rainbow River . It’s also a great place for hiking trails in the Halpata Tastanaki Preserve and bicycling on the Withlacoochee State Trail .

For a small town, Dunellen has a surprising number of good restaurants too.

The historic town makes a good base for exploring this unspoiled region, especially in cooler months. It starts with kayaking the Rainbow, but we also recommend six more things to do.

old florida day trips

Punta Gorda: Kayaking, biking, charming downtown

Punta Gorda is a fun little town devoted to bicycling with all sorts of hiking and birding. There is both terrific saltwater mangrove kayaking as well as one of the best paddling rivers I’ve “discovered” – Shell Creek .

Many things to do in Punta Gorda revolve around the water vistas along the wide Peace River, including parks and walking/biking paths along the waterfront, historic neighborhoods with cobbled streets and stately old homes. In winter, Punta Gorda’s calendar is full of festivals and its downtown buzzes with pedestrians on weekends.

We loved the Peace River Botanical Garden too.

Here’s a Rambler guide to 11 things to do in Punta Gorda .

Sunset over the Amelia River at Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island.

Fernandina Beach: Historic plantation, fort and “Boneyard Beach”

Up in the farthest northeast corner of Florida, Fernandina Beach has all of my favorite things, from old forts to bike trails to exceptional beaches and kayaking. The historic town has one of the best traditional downtowns around, with well-preserved Victorian architecture and many places to dine.

One of the most interesting historic sites in Florida is near here — the Kingsley Plantation , which is part of a little known national park. The beautiful site tells stories of slaves and slave holders that may surprise you.

Another historic highlight is Fort Clinch State Park , which preserves a stunning landscape of sprawling oak trees and a broad beautiful beach. The fort itself is fun to visit because there are re-enactors present to bring history alive.

Big and Little Talbot Island State Parks are two adjacent state parks near Fernandina Beach offering a wealth of recreational possibilities. Little Talbot Island is one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands in Florida. It has five miles of white sand beaches, but also maritime forests, dunes and salt marshes.

“Boneyard Beach” here, bleached driftwood on a pristine beach, is popular with photographers.

Here’s a Rambler guide to Fernandina Beach .

Everglades City was built around a circular road, with the Run and Gun Club one side and this neo-classical city hall (formerly the county building) on another. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)

Everglades City: Old fishing village for stone crabs, great paddling

Everglades City, at the end of the road on the Gulf Coast, is an outstanding place to make a base for exploring the Everglades and Ten Thousand Islands.

You can kayak what I consider the most beautiful river in the Everglades ( the Turner River ) , paddle in the  Ten Thousand Islands , hike in several different state and national parks and eat stone crab in funky riverfront restaurants.

Ten minutes away, on the island of Chokoloskee, you can visit the 1906 general store, Smallwoods Store , an exceptional slice of history in a beautiful setting. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it is still owned by the original family.

The historic fishing town hosts the very popular Everglades Seafood Festival every February.

Here’s a Rambler guide to Everglades City .

old florida towns mount dora downtown Off-the-beaten-path getaways: Nine Old Florida towns make great bases

Mount Dora: Might as well be Mount Dorable

Mount Dora has a lively restored downtown and historic district that have been landscaped and beautified to maximize the inherent charm of this small town 40 minutes northwest of Orlando.

Mount Dora overlooks Lake Dora and spreads out over rolling hills under a canopy of live oak trees that have been loved and cherished by residents for years.

For kayakers, there is the exquisite nearby Mount Dora canal and within a half hour you can reach Rock Creek Run, the Wekiva River and Lake Norris and Blackwater Creek.

We brought our bikes and loved biking along the shores of Lake Dora to another cute town, Tavares.

One thing that has kept Mount Dora full of restaurants and lodging is a series of very popular festivals that bring thousands to the town. Check the festival calendar if you want to enjoy one — or avoid them!

Here’s Florida Rambler’s 12 things to love about Mount Dora.

Sanford will surprise you with beer, food & nearby biking, kayaking

I’ve seen this historic riverfront town a half hour from Orlando called a “hidden gem” or “Central Florida’s best kept secret.” When I visited recently for a long weekend, I was surprised how lively and fun Sanford is today.

There are tons of things to do in Sanford, Florida.

There’s a beautiful riverfront where you can walk or bicycle for miles. Within a half hour, there are two wild and wonderful rivers to kayak and numerous hiking trails. Sanford has a charming brick-paved downtown filled with preserved historic buildings enlivened with restaurants, breweries and bars.

The nearby residential historic district is a splendid neighborhood shaded by hundred-year-old live oaks arching over carefully restored homes where golf carts are used to buzz around town.

Here’s Florida Rambler’s 10 reasons I fell in love with Sanford .

And there’s more:

Even with this list, I haven’t exhausted the possibilities. We also recommend these outstanding destinations. Each of these Old Florida towns are the subject to a profile on Florida Rambler with things to do and places to camp or stay.

Pensacola was founded 100 years before Cedar Key!

You might want to look at how old Pensacola is!

Monday 17th of January 2022

I am born & raised in South Florida, Miami (Coconut Grove) specifically. Talk about a place that’s seen change! Good & bad but hate to lose the small “quaint” areas. I love your articles & use them often to find off the beaten path areas, keep up the good work, just save a few secrets if you could, hate to have Florida completely exposed. My mother was from Madison & I too love that area, Blue Springs on hot summer afternoons was a gem! I hear now that it’s packed, has a service charge, etc etc, definitely not a place I’d like to go to anymore, hate to spoil my memories. I know this is progress they say but I say—“if it’s Season, why can’t we shoot em?” Just KIDDING! I’ll keep rambling through the backroads till I find my little honey hole on the beaches w/ not a soul in sight…

Thank you for your nice comments about central Florida and the Lake Wales Ridge. As a 6th generation Floridian still living in Avon Park, I totally understand the comments of some of the folks who are angry about coastal development. I hate it also. With a 1000 people a day moving to Florida apparently there is nothing we can do about development, as we can't close the border. Very fortunately, the ridge has escaped so much attention, so far. I pray I never see it. But that wish is unrealistic. HOWEVER, it is not your articles that are causing or encouraging all the people, it's all of their friends who are already here as well as people who visit who decide to make Florida their permanent home. Just part of life's so called "progress". Great work you do!

FLORIDA PARKS

By   Mike Miller   Updated September 16, 2023

Florida Parks are treasured Florida natural resources.  The Old Florida that is rapidly disappearing from the state is being preserved in local, state, and national parks.

Florida Caverns State Park

It is because of these parks that some parts of natural Florida are still alive and well despite the proliferation of condos, theme parks, subdivisions and shopping malls.

Many Florida state parks have camping sites carved out of the surrounding pine woods and palmettos. The campsites are separated from each other by this natural vegetation.

The privacy is much greater than in the average private campground.  Each campsite usually has an electric outlet, a water faucet, a charcoal grill and a fire ring for campfires.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE FLORIDA PARKS

Elliott Key, Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park Headquarters & Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Convoy Point 9700 Southwest 328th Street, Sir Lancelot Jones Way, Homestead, Florida 33033.  Tel:  305-230-33033 https://www.nps.gov/bisc/index.htm

This is a national park that is 95 percent water.

I have enjoyed sailing in Biscayne Bay more than anywhere else in Florida.  Even though it is in the heart of Miami and the rest of urbanized South Florida, it has some of the clearest waters in the state.

This is because much of the bay is within Biscayne National Park.

The park is nearly 173,000 acres and most of it is underwater except for Elliott Key, the first of the long string of Florida Keys.

It’s a thrill to be boating within sight of the massive skyscrapers of downtown Miami, but still feel worlds away.

If you love the outdoors, you will enjoy yourself in this park.  You can snorkel, camp, boat, watch wildlife, fish, take guided eco-adventures, or just relax.

Several private concessioners offer full day tours in the park that include snorkeling, hiking, paddling, and sailing from park headquarters.

Mainland access to the park is from park headquarters at Convoy Point.  Local parks and marinas also provide access to the park.

The park protects Stiltsville , once a 27-home community of houses perched on stilts.  Only a few survived Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and they are all unoccupied.

The park has a few mooring buoys near Fowey Rocks lighthouse for private boaters.  Personal watercraft like jet skis are prohibited.

Devils Millhopper Nature Trail

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park 4732 Millhopper Rd, Gainesville, FL 32652. Tel: 352-955-2008 https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/devils-millhopper-geological-state-park

I have lived in Florida most of my life, and this park is unlike the rest of the state.

It will give you the feeling of being in another world.

You walk down a 232-step wooden staircase into the bottom of a geological formation that has been attracting visitors for well over a century.

You are really entering a sinkhole that is 120 feet deep and has a diameter of 500 feet.

The geology here has created a miniature rain forest in the middle of North Central Florida.  You will see gentle streams of clear water trickling down the limestone walls.

These miniature waterfalls and the coolness of the place make it a refreshing escape from the busy Florida that surrounds it.

Sometimes volunteer guides are on duty and will give you inside stories about the park.

As I write this in 2019, the boardwalk steps down to the bottom are being repaired from damage done by Hurricane Irma.

Make sure to call the park to see if the walk is open.

Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas

Dry Tortugas National Park Mailing Address:  40001 State Road 9556, Homestead, Florida 33034. Tel:  305-242-7700 https://www.nps.gov/drto/index.htm

You can take a long day trip or enjoy a camping adventure by visiting Dry Tortugas National Park about 70 miles west of Key West.

This 100-square mile park is made up of 7 small islands surrounded by open water.  You can only get to this park by boat or seaplane.

The park is famous for its centerpiece attraction, the imposing Fort Jefferson.  This is the place where Dr. Mudd was imprisoned after President Lincoln’s assassination for treating John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg.

The islands are surrounded by magnificent clear blue waters, beautiful coral reefs teeming with marine life, and a large bird population.

There are several popular ways to make the trip to this park.

You can bring your own boat, charter a boat or seaplane in Key West, or take a passenger ferry.

The way I prefer is to take the Yankee Freedom III, a high-speed catamaran ferry out of Key West that takes about 2 hours 15 minutes to make the trip.

It stays at the park for about 4 hours, giving you plenty of time to explore.

Florida Caverns State Park 3345 Caverns Rd, Marianna, FL 32446.  Tel: 850-482-1228 https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/florida-caverns-state-park

This is another natural attraction like Devil’s Millhopper that will make you feel like you are not in Florida.

It is your chance to explore a network of underground caves created from limestone formations that have slowly dissolved over thousands of years.

You will enjoy the cool air, the drip-drip-drip of trickling water, and breathtaking views of mysterious stalactites and stalagmites.

You will move from cave to cave and see the many chisel marks made by Civilian Conservation Corps workers in the 1930s. They were involved in enlarging the cave passageways by hand, so visitors could stand upright during guided tours.

These workers also built the park’s spacious visitor’s center and a unique nine-hole golf course set in beautiful rolling terrain.

Located next to the Chipola River and Blue Hole Spring, you can also enjoy boating, fishing, or hiking in this state park.

Display at Fruit and Spice Park

Fruit and Spice Park 24801 SW 187th Ave, Homestead, FL 33031. Tel: 305-247-5727 http://redlandfruitandspice.com/

It was an eye opener to me when I realized that fruit and spices could be so much fun. Fruit and Spice Park in one of the most unusual parks in Florida.

It is devoted to fruits and spices, just as its name says.

The Redland is a large agricultural area near Homestead.  The farms here raise tropical vegetables, plants, and palm trees.  The area is named for the dominant clayey red soil.

This land is a horticultural oddity; things grow in The Redland that won't grow elsewhere in Florida or America.  The Redland grows things that are native to tropical areas of Asia or South America.

This park is in the heart of this tropical agricultural wonder.

More than 500 varieties of exotic fruits, herbs, spices and nuts from all over the world are found in this 40-acre park established in 1944 and operated by Miami-Dade County.

The park collection includes plants and trees from Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize, Panama, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma, Singapore and Hong Kong.

You will learn how to identify poisonous plants you shouldn't eat or touch.

The park has a nice little store in the office building. Merchandise includes dried and canned fruit, juices, jams, jellies, teas, seeds, cold fruit juices.

The friendly staff will let you sample some of the garden delights from a serving platter they keep on hand.  Guided tours of Fruit and Spice Park are conducted daily at 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:00 pm.

Highlands Hammock State Park

Highlands Hammock State Park 5931 Hammock Rd, Sebring, FL 33872.  Tel: 863-386-6094 https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/highlands-hammock-state-park

I love driving through this beautiful park.  If I have more time, I take a tram ride and let somebody else do the driving.

You can also hike on its 9 separate trails or ride your bike on a 3-mile loop trail.

It’s one of the oldest state parks, opening in 1931.  It has 9,000 acres that encompass a thriving ecosystem.

Highlands Hammock has one of Florida’s diverse collections of plant and animal life in Florida.  The park is home to 1,000-year-old oaks, old growth hammock, and the Florida panther.

Ferns and air plants are almost everywhere you look.

You might even see a black bear or Florida panther.

An elevated boardwalk crosses a cypress swamp, and from here you may see alligators, birds and other wildlife.  Picnicking, bird-watching, and ranger-guided tours are other popular activities.

The tram tour gives you the opportunity to view birds, alligators, turtles, deer and other wildlife relatively close-up, in areas of the park that are restricted to public access.

Catch-and-release fishing and picnicking are available at the nearby Seven Lakes management unit.

Highlands Hammock provides a full-facility campground.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings House in Cross Creek

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park  18700 S CR 325, Cross Creek, FL 32640. Tel: 352-466-3672 https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/marjorie-kinnan-rawlings-historic-state-park

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, The Yearling .  She also wrote a book titled Cross Creek about her years living here.

She wrote both books here in her little house, and you will see her old typewriter and feel like she might pop back into the room at any minute.

You will experience what 1930s farm life was like when she lived and worked here.  Her Florida Cracker style home and farm has been restored and is preserved as it was when she lived here.

The park is open every day and visitors may tour the house with a ranger in period costume from October through July on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 and 11 a.m. and at 1, 2, 3, and 4 p.m.

An adjacent county park has picnic facilities, a boat ramp to Orange Lake, and a playground.  You can explore her farmyard, grove, seasonal garden and trails.

But don’t let the famous Daytona Beach be the only beach you visit in this town! Do a little exploring and see if you can find a more peaceful, under-the-radar beach.

Since Canaveral National Seashore has been closed off to development for so long, many wild animals have flocked to it. It’s not uncommon to see turtles lounging on the seashore, alligators crawling around during your drive in, or bald eagles cruising across the sky. While there, you can keep an eye out for these elusive animals or simply enjoy the sunny, shell-filled seashore.

11+ Day Trips From Ocala Florida

Try one of our day trips from ocala.

Due to Ocala’s center of the state location, there is an amazing number of opportunities for day trips from Ocala Florida. Access to major highways and a plethora of state parks in the region makes Ocala a great place to live.

Florida Travel Blog has assembled some incredible and unique ideas for day trips from Ocala within a two-hour drive. Each of the day trips describes the location, miles from Ocala, what there is to see and do along with our recommendations.

Here is our list of day trips from Ocala, Florida;

Day trips from Ocala Micanopy

To Do and See in Micanopy; The town is made up of historically restored buildings and landmarks.  Rustic is the keyword for most of the town.

Recommendation: Micanopy is also known for its antique shops and quaint restaurants. The village is a good place to take a stroll. There are plenty of stately older homes. Don’t make the mistake of believing many items you see laying around are antiques, some may be in use!

Distance – under 30 minutes, just south of Gainesville off I-75, about 27 miles.

Crystal River

Best Day trips from Ocala

To Do and See in Crystal River; Must visit Three Sisters Springs to see manatees or take a boat tour of Kings Bay from the Plantation Inn . Good tiki bar at Plantation also.

Recommendation; Stop at the Tiki at Plantation Inn. Good food and manatee sometimes are in the canal next to you. There is an Adventure Center for boat rentals and charter fishing.

Distance – just under an hour, straight west off Rt. 40 from Ocala, about 40 miles.

Rainbow Springs State Park

best day trips from ocala florida

To Do and See at Rainbow Springs; As you enter the park you have a stunning view of the river below. You can hike, swim, paddleboard, and kayak – or just enjoy the view and watch other activities in the park.

Recommendation: Take a camera for some great pictures of the scenic river and the wildlife surrounding it. If you are adventurous, try tubing down the river.

Have a hot dog at the concession or drive into Dunnellon for lunch at Swampy’s Bar and Grill waterfront right on the river.

Distance – about 35 minutes, off Rt. 40 in Dunnellon, 22 miles.

The Florida Aquarium

Best Unique Day trips from Ocala

To Do and See at The Florida Aquarium; The exhibits are amazing. Every type of fish, coral, and other wildlife greets visitors as they wind through the expansive building. Dozens of aquarium enclosures house fish you will most likely never see anywhere else.

Recommendation; Plan for lunch at their café (indoor and outdoor). There is a splash pad for kids outside. The room-size exhibits are mesmerizing as large fish swim through the coral.

Distance – just over 2 hours, straight south on I-75, then I-275 will take you within a mile of the Aquarium. 127 miles.

728*90

To Do and See at Mount Dora; The shops are numerous and range from trinkets to clothes. Crafts and craft supplies are displayed. Shopping is a well-planned sport for visitors to Mount Dora.

Recommendation; There are many restaurants in Mt. Dora. One exceptional place is Pisces Rising Restaurant . We suggest lunch or dinner on the bluff overlooking Lake Dora. One of our favorite day trips from Ocala.

Distance – an hour and 15 minutes southeast Rt. 27 to 441 to Mt. Dora. 62 miles.

St. Augustine

florida day trip

To Do and See at St. Augustine; This is the oldest city in America. History is literally everywhere. St. Augustine was fought over by four nations. Architecture and culture reflect each country with Spanish the most prevalent.

Recommendation; Take a horse-drawn carriage through the old brick streets of the town. Your driver will tell you about the history of the old buildings. Visit the Oldest House Museum to see life in colonial times. A stroll down George Street is a must. The shops and restaurants are located on an old narrow colonial street.  Try the Prohibition Kitchen , one of our favorite restaurants.

Distance – under two hours northeast Rt 19 to state Rt. 207. Multiple ways to go. Just under 90 miles.

Homosassa and Homosassa Springs

day trip in ocala Florida

To Do and See at Homosassa Springs; The Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park will be one of your highlights. You can take a pontoon ride to the park that features almost every species of wildlife in Florida. After that, plan on lunch along the Homosassa River with a view of Monkey Island from Cracker’s Restaurant.

Recommendation; Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park is a special place to visit. Birds, animals, and flora of Florida are along your path in a tropical forest setting. Easily a half day of interesting Florida nature. Venture a few miles down the road to Crackers for refreshments or food on the river. The Homosassa River is active. Plenty of boats and fishermen. Across the river is Crumps Landing , another good restaurant.

Distance –  an hour, take Rt. 200 to 491. 48 miles. Fun Ocala day trip.

Ocala day trip to ybor city

To Do and See at Ybor City; 7th Avenue in Ybor City is a restoration model for taking old buildings and turning them into a charming tourist community. The unique shops and now famous restaurants make Ybor a visitors delight.

Recommendation; Take an old-style streetcar for a tour of Ybor and the downtown around the Channelside District in Tampa. This is a fun ride. Explore the buildings in Ybor. Visit Carmines , one of the famous restaurants on the strip. You may want to visit one of the oldest restaurants in Florida called The Columbia a few blocks from Carmine’s. They have been there since 1905. You could combine this with The Florida Aquarium above.

Distance – about 2 hours from Ocala, south on I75 to I275. 120 miles.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park (Cross Creek Florida)

best day trips from ocala

To Do and See at MKR State Park; The book, The Yearling , was written on this patch of remote wilderness by Rawlings. She wrote about things she saw and the people ( Florida Crackers ) around her. Her ramshackle house and outbuildings still stand as part of the park experience.

Recommendation; It’s fun to see how people lived, famous or not, in the early 1930s. The horse-drawn wagons, tools and utensils are part of the estate. She did have a vintage automobile on the estate. In the nearby hamlet of Cross Creek stands a restaurant by the name of The Yearling (same as the book). A visit there will take you back to the food of the period. Things like venison, frog legs, gator, and fried green tomatoes were staples on the Florida Cracker pioneer menu.

Distance – 30 minutes from Ocala, north on Rt. 301. 28 miles.

The Devil’s Den

ocala day trips florida

To Do and See at Devil’s Den; Devil’s Den has become a top Florida attraction for the curious and divers who want to see a cave with an underground river. The name, Devil’s Den , came from the steam that rises on cold winter mornings from the hole above. The locals started calling this the Devil’s Den.

Recommendation; You can enjoy Devil’s Den in a couple of ways. If you don’t want to venture down into the cave or snorkel the river, there is an observation platform built above the opening. You can see people who want to dive the cave as they enter the water below. There is a lake and picnic shelters around the property. It’s a great place to bring a picnic lunch! Williston is a horse town with plenty of sprawling ranches along the way.

Distance –  a one hour day trip from Ocala, north on Rt. 27. 53 miles.

Ichetucknee Springs State Park

day trip from ocala florida.

To Do and See at Ichetucknee; There are 6 major springs that create the 6-mile-long Ichetucknee River . The crystal clear waters stay at 72 degrees year-round. Plenty of wildlife throughout the park.

Recommendation; The Ichetucknee State Park is one of Florida’s best-known places for floating down the river. Kayaks, tubes and canoes can be rented. Hiking on one of three short trails brings Mother Nature within feet away. There is a general store at the head of the springs. Bring your camera for many nature photos.

Distance – One hour and 15 minutes via I-75 north from Ocala. 72 miles.

Nearby Opportunities for Day Trips From Ocala Florida

We did not include two places within the boundaries of the City of Ocala for day trips. Florida Travel Blog recognizes both Silver Springs and the World Equestrian Center as places that make great day trips.

Silver Springs is one of Florida’s oldest visitor attractions.

One of Florida’s newest attractions is the World Equestrian Center. Each is located at opposite ends of Ocala.

Don’t forget The Villages is just 30 minute away. Lake Sumter Square in The Villages is a great place for shopping, dining, entertainment and  tons of things to do in The Villages .

Add to the List of Day Trips From Ocala Florida

We are always adding to the list. If you have some great ideas, send them to us. This city has some fun opportunities for day trips from Ocala with its central location and good freeway access.

Past and present mingle on every street, where new restaurants and old sightseeing stops elbow each other for travelers’ attentions. Take it all in, then head to the beach, which has sunny sands for lounging and greenspaces for picnicking."

Celebrating mom:  The when, how and why we celebrate the mother figures in our lives

Is Mother's Day a federal holiday?

No. Neither Mother's Day, nor Father's Day, are one of the  11 federal holidays  in the U.S.

The next federal holiday will be Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, 2024.

Is it Mother's Day, Mothers Day or Mothers' Day?

While Google searches run the gamut from Mother's Day, Mothers Day, Mothers' Day and even "Mother's' Day," the correct way to refer to the holiday is Mother's Day.

Shelter Dog Delighted by Field Trip Treat After 290 Days in Kennel

A shelter dog's special field trip outside the kennel has touched people's hearts online as the break from the stressful environment gave him a chance to showcase his personality.

Duke, the 2-year-old Labrador mix , was brought in as a stray by an animal care and control officer to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter (MCAS) in Conroe, Texas. Duke has waited patiently for an adopter to come forward for over 290 days. At one point, he thought his forever family came forward, but that unfortunately fell through, Courtney Gawel, live release manager at MCAS, told Newsweek via email.

However, that hasn't stopped Duke from holding onto hope. Gawel said he constantly greets potential adopters at the front of his kennel. If that wasn't enough to lure his future family in, the personality he showed during his recent field trip will surely do the trick.

A video posted to Facebook on Monday by the animal shelter highlighted Duke's field trip where he got to go on a walk outside, explored Lowe's, and received a well-deserved pup cup . While on the trip, Duke showed he is a calm and composed dog. He loves receiving scratches, has great leash manners, is nonreactive to other dogs, and is extremely gentle around children.

Shelter dog during field trip

The field trip showed Duke's true personality. The MCAS wrote in its post that Duke usually appears crazy in the kennel since he is cooped up all day. But as soon as he was out, he was a different dog when away from the stresses of the shelter.

"Our foster field trip program is very popular in our area and we have several volunteers and foster families that take dogs regularly on day trips or even overnight trips," Gawel said.

Field trips like the one Duke went on are very beneficial for shelter dogs as they are an excellent stress reliever for dogs, according to the website BeChewy. It also gives dogs one-on-one attention which is hard to give animals packed in overcrowded shelters.

Shelters benefit from field trips too. Those who take the dogs out can report how the dog acted in a more natural environment or reacted to other pets and children. Plus, volunteers can get better pictures to showcase these animals. BeChewy reported that field trips can also lead to shorter shelter stays.

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet "Shelter Watch Report" found.

Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

Facebook Users React

Monday's Facebook post so far has had over 11,000 views and 855 likes.

"He just wants you to know how good he is out & wanting a forever home to give his love & receive his affection for you!" wrote one Facebook user.

Another commented: "I pray he gets a home soon!! Every animal deserves that."

A third Facebook user posted: "He's been in the shelter long enough and deserves a home!"
