Walmart+ launches new travel benefit, offering up to 5% Walmart Cash on your trip purchases

Nick Ewen

For anyone looking for a savings opportunity while traveling, the nation's largest retailer has just launched a new booking platform for its members that can help with just that.

Walmart+ Travel (powered by Expedia) is now live, allowing members to book flights, rental cars, hotels, vacation rentals, activities and more. But the best part? You can get up to 5% Walmart Cash on these purchases.

This new benefit adds to an already lucrative lineup of benefits for Walmart+ members.

Here's everything you need to know about this new offering.

Overview of Walmart+ Travel

As noted previously, Walmart+ Travel is powered by Expedia, and it's available through your Walmart+ account and at WalmartPlusTravel.com. It's a great way to get extra benefits on virtually all aspects of a trip. When you book directly with Walmart+ Travel, you'll receive Walmart Cash on your travel purchases at the following rate:

  • 5% Walmart Cash on hotel bookings, vacation rentals, rental cars and activities.
  • 2% Walmart Cash on air travel.

If you book a vacation package that includes two (or more) of these items, you'll earn Walmart Cash at a blended rate (e.g., 2% on the air travel part of the purchase and 5% on the other parts).

Your Walmart Cash will appear as "pending" in your Walmart+ account before becoming available within 30 days of the completion of your trip. You have the option of using it for future Walmart purchases or receiving it as cash back in your pocket.

Walmart+ Travel is available now for existing Walmart+ members as well as new ones. You'll even have access to it if you sign up for a free 30-day trial of the program — allowing you to test it (and the many other benefits of Walmart+) before committing to a full membership.

How to use Walmart+ Travel

To access Walmart+ Travel, simply visit walmartplus.com and sign in to your account. You'll find the Walmart+ Travel tile in your member hub. Simply click "Book a Trip," which will take you to the Walmart+ Travel site, which is powered by Expedia.

plus travel

From there, search for your desired travel arrangements — including flights, rental cars, hotels, vacation rentals and packages. You'll clearly see the amount of Walmart Cash you'd get for each type of booking.

plus travel

Select the reservation(s) you want, then follow the on-screen instructions to finalize the booking.

Once you receive the confirmation, you'll see your Walmart Cash listed as "pending" in your Walmart+ account within 48 hours.

Thirty days after the completion of your booking, your Walmart Cash will change to "redeemable" and can be applied to future Walmart purchases — or received directly as cash back.

Remember that airline tickets purchased through a third-party platform like Walmart+ Travel are typically treated like normal revenue tickets and thus are eligible to earn points or miles. You should also enjoy any elite status perks you have with the given airline — though this often isn't the case with major hotel and rental car programs.

Using Walmart+ Travel with other member benefits

Of course, Walmart+ Travel is just the newest benefit for members, and it adds even more value for those taking to the skies (or hitting the roads) this summer.

For example, Walmart+ members enjoy free shipping with no order minimum (excluding most Marketplace items and certain location and freight charges). This allows you to stock up on travel essentials ahead of a trip you book with Walmart+ Travel — and you can even use any available Walmart Cash for these purchases.

For example, for those without a Walmart+ membership, these packing cubes would require a trip to your local Walmart for in-store pickup or cost $6.99 to ship.

plus travel

However, Walmart+ members could have these shipped directly to their home address — and most items will arrive within one to two days.

If a road trip is in your future, you can also leverage Walmart+ fuel savings at more than 14,000 stations nationwide. This can give you 10 cents off every gallon of gas at participating locations (5 cents in Alabama and Oklahoma; subject to change).

Finally, when you arrive at your destination and settle into your hotel or vacation rental, you can launch your included Paramount+ streaming subscription (Essential plan only; separate registration required).

How to join Walmart+

If you're not currently a Walmart+ member, you can become a member by visiting the Walmart+ website and clicking the link at the top to start your free 30-day trial.

Remember that holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express can receive a statement credit each month when they charge the monthly cost of a Walmart+ membership ($12.95 plus applicable taxes) to their card (enrollment required; Plus Ups not eligible).

As soon as your account is activated, you'll be able to start receiving Walmart Cash for bookings through Walmart+ Travel — and access the various other benefits of membership.

Bottom line

Walmart+ Travel (powered by Expedia) is the newest benefit for Walmart+ members, offering up to 5% Walmart Cash on eligible bookings made through the platform. This enhancement allows Walmart+ members to save money on virtually every aspect of their travels, with Walmart Cash that can cover future Walmart purchases or be redeemed directly for cash back.

If you're not a member, join today — and then begin receiving Walmart Cash on your next trip.

New Tours Mean No More FOMO for Plus-Size Travelers

Five companies dedicated to size-inclusive travel aim to bring community and reassurance to people in bigger bodies.

Seven plus-size women in colorful, airy clothing, sit around a small table in the back of a motorboat. They are laughing and clearly having a wonderful time. Their boat is about a quarter mile from a seaside city with mostly low white buildings that can be seen in the background. There are a few moored sailboats to the right, and the sky is clear and bright.

By Carla Sosenko

Carla Sosenko is a New York-based writer who will be going on her first size-inclusive group trip this summer.

Vacation is meant to be relaxing, exhilarating and insert all the other positive adjectives you like, but it is often stressful and disappointing. Traveling while fat can be both of those things, as well as dehumanizing and FOMO-inducing.

Actually, plus-size travelers don’t just have the fear of missing out; they’ve historically had the near guarantee that they will miss out, thanks to fat bias and societal structures that say we are simply too big to have fun. There are the obvious challenges — too-small airline seats, intimidating pools and beaches — but other worries as well: What if the spa bathrobes don’t fit? What if the rides at an amusement park cannot accommodate bigger bodies and the only way to find that out is by waiting in line for an hour and then unsuccessfully trying to board? What if the airline loses your bag and there are no stores at your destination with clothes that fit? (Trevor Kezon, a board member of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance , said he purposely packs two suitcases on trips because of that distinct possibility.)

Now a small but growing market catering to size-inclusive travel (often aimed exclusively at women) is seeking to bring joy, community and reassurance to people in bigger bodies at price points on par with standard group trips.

The benefits of going on a size-inclusive trip are multilayered, according to participants and numerous tour operators: Emotionally, a traveler knows straightaway that her peers have also chosen a trip designed around body acceptance. She may know that her fellow travelers are probably already somewhat versed in her world, and understand that “fat” as an adjective is a fact, but “obese,” which equates fatness with a disease, and “overweight,” which suggests there is an ideal weight to be, are most likely not welcome. Logistically, it means everything has been planned with accessibility in mind, like dinners at restaurants with chairs that are spacious, supportive and comfortable.

It also means camaraderie. “I cannot tell you for certain that you are not going to get a look, and I cannot protect you from that look,” Zoe Shapiro, founder of Stellavision Travel , which offers a size-inclusive trip to southern Italy, said about traveling while fat. “But you can count on me inserting myself between the group and the gaze. And if I can prevent our travelers from feeling it, either by diverting their attention, having a conversation, communicating in Italian, whatever I can do, I will.”

Even though one-third of the world’s population is fat, according to NAAFA — with fat defined as “exceeding the current medical standard or the current social standard for acceptable bodies,” said NAAFA chair Tigress Osborn — the travel industry has been slow to accommodate. When it comes to adventure-based excursions, like zip-lining and white-water rafting, many bigger people have assumed that exclusionary weight limits are unavoidable and for our own safety. But a zip line can be designed to support any weight. The Chubby Diaries blogger, Jeff Jenkins, whose National Geographic travel show, “Never Say Never With Jeff Jenkins,” premieres July 9, said that all it takes is an innovative mind-set to make activities inclusive: “People move literal tons of lumber with zip lines. No human weighs a ton.”

For some of us, the journey to embracing travel has been interior — celebrating our identity instead of fighting or hiding it — and what a relief it has been to find others already at the destination, happy to guide us. Mr. Jenkins pointed to the new crowdsourcing app Friendly Like Me , which was created for people at higher weights or with disabilities (or both) to find out everything they need to know about a place’s accessibility and “friendliness” beforehand.

Here are some travel companies helping to change the landscape.

Stellavision Travel

In addition to body inclusion, the Stellavision trip to southern Italy (July 15 to 29, $5,650) focuses on hyperlocal tourism, as well as woman-owned businesses. For Sara Courson, who traveled with the 2022 group, that was the main draw — but the size-inclusive aspect was the clincher. “I gained weight during the pandemic, and I had been nervous about going abroad,” she said. Instead of being anxious that people would be irritated by “that one fat lady on the trip,” she was comforted knowing she’d most likely be with people who accepted her.

On the Stellavision trip — which will run again in the summer of 2024, as will a new size-inclusive Italy trip with a route and an itinerary to be determined — there is no specifically body-focused programming. “There were therapy-adjacent-type tools,” said Ms. Courson, “but we’re not sitting around talking every meal about what it’s like in our lives.”

And though the trip is not limited to people who identify as plus size, it is meant for those who specifically want to feel secure in their bodies. Weeks before the trip, Ms. Shapiro, who lives in Rome, sends participants a survey that asks, among other things, what they’re nervous about. This is so she can address those worries ahead of time.

Of her trip — which is open to “self-identifying women and nonbinary folks who feel comfortable in female spaces” — Ms. Shapiro added, “I would never take people’s money and say I am the de facto voice in size-inclusive travel.” Her intention, she said, is simply to present “a more multifaceted experience with all the thoughts and intentionality that our travelers deserve.”

Fat Girls Traveling

Necessity is the mother of invention, and for the influencer Annette Richmond, who founded Fat Girls Traveling, it is a necessity to not let sizeist convention stop her from doing every single thing she wants to do when it comes to experience and adventure.

She recounted a trip to Indonesia, where she was excited to experience the Tegalalang Rice Terrace Swing, an endorphin-packing attraction that launches participants over gorgeous rice paddies. Ms. Richmond recalls trudging through the mud: “I’m scraped up, I get there to the swing, ready for my debut, and I’m putting the harness around my waist and it does not click. I was like, ‘Dude, why can’t they just get a bigger harness?’” The result? The swing operators apologized and suggested a competitor, Real Bali Swing , which offered larger harnesses.

Now Ms. Richmond hosts trips and retreats for other people who are sick of being excluded: “My fat camps, which are like my retreats, those are for fat femmes and nonbinary people,” she said. If she opened up her retreats to everyone, she said, “there is a threat of losing the magic.” From Aug. 25 to 28, she’ll host Fat Camp U.K. in Brighton, England ($2,000), which, in addition to summer-camp-style games and pub crawls, will feature fat-positive discussions. Ms. Richmond also has a size-inclusive trip to Cuba Sept. 1 to 5 ($2,750) — without the planned consciousness-raising of the retreats, just pure fun — and hopes next to plan group travel in Mexico, her home base since 2020. (Her trips, unlike her retreats, are open to all genders.)

Nicci Nunez and Alex Stewart met through mutual friends, and in October 2020 started the Swipe Fat podcast, which now has 20,000 monthly listeners. “At that time nobody was doing a podcast exclusively about dating while plus-size” and the particular anxieties in the age of apps, Ms. Nunez said. Those anxieties include, Ms. Stewart added, “feeling like we had to put photos of ourselves that accurately depicted who we were.”

Their connection and openness on the podcast naturally led the Chicago-based duo to host meet-ups, which led to travel, said Ms. Stewart: “We were like, ‘What if we just did a trip somewhere else and then people can come meet us?’” The trips, which do not feature a dating component and are for anyone who identifies as a woman, are planned through TrovaTrip , a platform that teams up with influencers to organize travel. Swipe Fat’s first trip was in October 2022, to Athens and Mykonos ; in June, Ms. Nunez and Ms. Stewart went to Italy , and they have a Spain trip planned for Oct. 3 to 9 ($2,595).

Like every other travel coordinator interviewed, they spoke of the instantly magical effect of being around like-minded (and -bodied) peers. “During beach day on our Greece trip, somebody came over and was like, ‘I just want to tell you how transformative this has been.’ That was just three days in,” Ms. Nunez said.

Fat Girls Travel, Too!

Ashley Wall (a.k.a. simplycurvee ), the founder of Fat Girls Travel, Too!, and her business partner, Natalie Robinson, have always been comfortable and confident in their bodies, which they know is not everyone’s experience. The goal of their women-only trips, Ms. Robinson said, is for people “to travel unapologetically.” That means loads of research and extremely tight curation by both women to find alternatives to excursions that are not immediately accessible to people in bigger bodies.

The company’s inaugural trip was in 2019, to Havana, where a group will return Dec. 7 to 11 ($2,500), with Bali, Indonesia, before that (Oct. 1 to 9, $3,597) and two trips to Cartagena, Colombia, after (Dec. 7 to 11, $2,550; March 3 to 8, 2024, $2,950). The number of participants on the tours will range from six to 12, “so everyone feels as though they’re being catered to,” Ms. Wall said. One recent Fat Girls traveler, said Ms. Robinson, had a groundbreaking experience akin to the one Ms. Nunez described: “It was the first time she ever wore a two-piece bathing suit.”

Virgie Tovar

Virgie Tovar, the author of several books, including “Flawless: Radical Body Positivity for Girls of Color,” has been hosting trips since 2016, when she teamed up with Tingalaya’s Retreat in Negril, Jamaica. “Every morning we would wake up to this gorgeous breakfast and then walk to our private beach and do stretches and jiggling (clothing optional!),” she wrote in an email from Italy, where she was hosting a size-inclusive tour through TrovaTrip. Ms. Tovar started her company as a sole proprietor in 2011, and in 2021 it became Virgie Tovar.

For Ms. Tovar, travel is a human right (her trips are for all genders). “If plus-size people don’t feel that travel is approachable or accessible, then we are truly missing out on a very important human experience,” she said.

Ms. Tovar has also traveled to Bali, and hosted San Francisco and Sausalito, Calif., retreats called Camp Thunder Thighs . Trip costs are usually around $2,000 for one week, not including flights, with locations determined by her own enthusiasm for them, traveler interest and TrovaTrip surveys of potential participants.

She shared a story from a water ceremony in Bali on her size-inclusive trip in 2022. “In order to participate we had to wear sarongs with sashes. Many people in the group were afraid that the sashes or sarongs wouldn’t fit them,” Ms. Tovar said. “I knew we could tie sashes and sarongs together to make them accessible. That’s exactly what we did! Everyone participated, and it was one of the most important moments on the trip because it really was a cleansing ritual, where you hand over your worries and grief to the water.”

50-Plus Travel Tours & Travel Guide

50-Plus Travel Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Traveling in your 50s can be very rewarding, especially today when travel has become easily accessible. Destinations that once seemed too remote and exotic to visit, particularly for folks over 50 — from the jungles of Costa Rica to the mountains of Bhutan , from the plains of East Africa to the icy waters of Antarctica — are now just a plane, train, or boat ride away.

With a dizzying number of travel opportunities, planning a trip can seem overwhelming. Airline routes, fares, and travel costs have become more complex, while the abundance of online advice can add to the confusion.

Independent travel, in general, can sometimes become more troublesome than it's worth — mainly when you have limited time to plan for a trip that may take you far away and last a week or longer.

However, joining a travel group for adults over 50 offers a solution, providing curated experiences and expert guidance to simplify the process and ensure memorable journeys without the hassle of booking your own trip and handling all the logistics yourself.

A Travel Group for Adults Over 50 Can Be the Best Solution

Adults over 50 are typically in a unique position where they have more time and resources to invest in their passion and curiosity to see the world. They also value the expertise and convenience provided by professional tour operators .

Travel groups for adults over 50 offer a tailored solution for mature adventurers seeking enriching experiences.

Today, tour companies are meeting the needs of over 50 travelers by offering personalized vacations with amenities like accessible accommodations, leisurely-paced itineraries, and knowledgeable guides.

From African safaris to treks to Machu Picchu , river cruises through Europe or Southeast Asia, small ship expeditions to the Galapagos , or culture-minded trips to Greece , Turkey , Italy , or Egypt , these tours cater to diverse interests.

Similarly, North America's national parks and archaeological treasures in Mexico and Central America beckon 50-plus travelers. With expert guidance and diverse adventures, over 50 travel tours create lasting memories without the hassle of planning every detail.

Top Travel Activities for People Over 50

In 2023, the number of leisure travelers increased by 22%, primarily driven by Generation X and Millennials. However, Baby Boomers spend the most on leisure travel (around $2,387 per capita). They have more money to spend on more luxurious experiences, and they are treating themselves!

Among the top over-50 travel trends are bucket-list trips — summer vacations, weekend getaways, international vacations, domestic trips, and heritage travel. Most 50-plus travel enthusiasts desire experiential travel.

Most travelers expect over 50 travel groups to offer immersive, expert-led tours with small group sizes- anything but sedentary — the tour operators have been quick to discover.

To that end, tour companies focusing on the 50-plus age group offer hands-on learning and workshops, locally guided tours, and behind-the-scenes sightseeing, from art-history tours in Italy to culinary tours in Thailand .

With more time for travel, over 50 travel tours are usually longer — typically a week or more — allowing more time to unplug and really engage in their destination.

Cruises for Adults Over 50

Cruises are popular among travelers in their 50s, offering convenience and accessibility to remote destinations. Traveling by ship eliminates the hassle of changing accommodations and dining arrangements. It is ideal for senior travelers over 50 seeking stress-free travel and meeting like-minded people on relatively longer trips.

Discover the breathtaking fjords of Norway or the vibrant islands of the Caribbean from the comfort of a cruise ship. Alternatively, explore Eastern Europe on a river cruise down the Danube or immerse yourself in the treasures of Egypt along the Nile .

Whether on the open seas or peaceful rivers, cruise adventures cater to the diverse interests of travel groups for adults over 50, ensuring unforgettable experiences.

Adventure Travel Groups for Adults Over 50

Over 50 travel groups embrace soft travel adventures. From hiking and cycling to birdwatching , they seek experiences blending physical activity with exploration.

Rather than opting for leisurely pursuits, couples and single travelers in their 50s prefer active sightseeing over traditional sightseeing tours, such as guided glacier walks in Iceland or cycling through Catalan villages. These walking and trekking activities provide a unique way to discover destinations while staying active.

Despite their adventurous spirit, over 50 travel enthusiasts appreciate comfort and luxury. Active vacations tailored for this age group offer a balance of adventure and relaxation, such as river cruising along the Danube in a state-of-the-art ship with daytime biking and walking tours through Austria's wine country.

That's the beauty of over 50 trips — they can be as active as you want, with various excursions and levels available.

Travel Groups for Singles Over 50

Solo travel among the 50-plus demographic is on the rise, offering mature travelers the chance to explore the world at their own pace. Safety and affordability are key considerations for those traveling alone when selecting destinations.

Travel groups for singles over 50 usually include places where travelers can immerse themselves in history and culture while connecting with like-minded individuals. Destinations offering opportunities like river cruises , soft adventure tours, walking tours, and cycling tours are popular.

Fortunately, many tour companies have eliminated single supplement fees, making traveling solo more accessible than ever. Guided tours and cruises designed exclusively for single travel provide ample opportunities to connect with other like-minded people in the group.

While women make up the majority of single over 50 travelers, both men and women value authentic local experiences and the security of small-group guided tours. These guided tours perfectly balance group activities and free time for independent exploration.

Travel Groups for Couples Over 50

For couples over 50, travel presents an opportunity to reconnect, explore new travel destinations, and create lasting memories together. With grown-up children and retirement on the horizon, many couples are eager to embark on discovery tours and adventure pursuits tailored to their interests and preferences.

Travel groups for couples over 50 offer a range of options, from romantic getaways to cultural immersions and outdoor adventures. Whether it's a leisurely river cruise along Europe's historic waterways or a thrilling safari in Africa, there's something to suit every couple's taste.

These guided tours provide the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, with expert guides leading the way and taking care of all the details. Couples can enjoy shared experiences while also having the freedom to pursue individual interests during free time.

Whether seeking romance, adventure, or cultural enrichment, travel groups for couples over 50 offer the ideal setting to bond and create cherished memories.

Relatively Relaxed Over 50 Travel Tours

Travel groups for adults over 50 offer a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation. While still adventurous, these tours prioritize comfort and leisure, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable journey.

With a focus on comfortable accommodations, authentic local cuisine, and convenient transportation, over 50 travel groups provide a more relaxed pace, allowing travelers to savor each destination fully.

Instead of strenuous activities, these itineraries may include opportunities for photography , fishing, wine tasting , or immersive cultural experiences.

At Travelstride, we understand the unique needs of travelers over 50, and our curated tours will help you find the perfect tour that aligns with your interests and preferences. , fishing, or may allow extra time for cultural immersion.

Top Destinations for Over 50 Travel Groups

Europe tops the chart for favorite destinations for 50-plus travel, particularly England , Italy , and France . Within the U.S. , 50-plus travelers primarily head to the southern and western states, with Florida, California, and New York being the top three most popular domestic destinations.

Older travelers also head to the Caribbean, Asia , and the Middle East . South American tours are in, too, as new upscale tour operators introduce a range of experiences beyond Machu Picchu (think hiking in Patagonia and Colombia coffee tours).

Small group guided tours, or river cruises, are a comfortable, safe way to explore new destinations — say, Asia or the Middle East — where cuisine, culture, and landscapes may be new and different.

Traveling with a reputable tour company in these regions allows over 50 travelers to immerse themselves in an entirely new and fascinating destination, yet with the safety net of guides who know their way around.

No matter where your wanderlust takes you, over 50 tour packages await you. From Egyptian pyramids and Petra to cycling in Japan to snorkeling in Belize, 50-plus travel is immersive, experiential, and gratifying.

Physical Requirements For Tourists Over 50

Understanding the physical requirements of your desired tour is crucial for preparing for the trip and managing expectations.

On Travelstride, tours are categorized into five primary physical levels: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Strenuous, and Extreme, providing clarity on the level of activity involved. This knowledge not only ensures you can fully enjoy your vacation but also helps alleviate stress by informing your packing decisions.

For instance, for walking tours rated as "Easy," you may pack extra walking clothes. In contrast, river cruises ("Very Easy") allow for indulgent packing with the convenience of only unpacking once.

Travel groups for adults over 50 typically sport Moderate and Easy range, which include cruises and guided tours with half-day walking, and some may consist of adventurous pursuits like kayaking or camel riding .

Those with limited mobility may favor over 50 tour groups rated Very Easy, such as river cruises and train journeys. Remember to verify wheelchair accessibility with the tour company to ensure the trip is right for you.

There’s a new option for booking travel that could help you save some money on everyday expenses, and it’s from a spot you might not have expected: Walmart.

The retail giant has launched a travel portal in partnership with Expedia.

Those who subscribe to Walmart+ can book activities, flights, hotels, rental cars, vacation rentals and travel packages. In return, they’ll earn Walmart Cash that can be used when shopping with the store.

Though it may not be the first choice for avid travelers who want to take advantage of travel loyalty programs, the portal is a way for your travels to help you offset expenses in your daily life; usually, this is done by using strategic everyday credit card spending to help you earn travel rewards.

This new travel portal is also a way travelers carrying The Platinum Card® from American Express can get more value out of their card and its $695 annual fee: Cardmembers can receive a statement credit to cover the Walmart+ membership fee. Terms apply.

How do you use the Walmart travel portal?

Walmart+ members can access the company’s new travel portal at WalmartPlusTravel.com. It’s also available through the member benefits section of the Walmart+ app.

You can use the site to book numerous aspects of your trip. Because the site is powered by Expedia, you’ll be able to access the online travel agency’s vast network of hotels and vacation rentals. The site has access to more than 900,000 properties (including hotels, homes, apartments, etc.), as well as more than 500 airlines globally and more than 100 rental car companies.

You can also book activities using the Walmart travel portal.

Earning Walmart Cash for travel

A key benefit for Walmart+ members booking a trip through WalmartPlusTravel.com is the ability to earn Walmart Cash.

Members will earn:

5% Walmart Cash on hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals and activities.

2% Walmart Cash on flights.

If you’re booking a vacation package, you’ll receive a blended Walmart Cash rate: 2% for the flight portion of your trip, 5% for the accommodations element.

Once you confirm a booking, any Walmart Cash you earn will appear in your wallet. It will become available 30 days after you complete travel. You can apply it to future purchases or cash out in the store.

Let’s say you're hoping to take a family of four from Washington, D.C., to Rome in September 2023. Start by plugging in desired flights, like you would on any booking site.

plus travel

Because it’s an online travel agency, the results turn up options on numerous airlines. You can see itinerary options aboard Delta Air Lines and Air France, among others.

Each itinerary option also shows how much you'd earn in Walmart Cash (again, 2% for flights). The cheapest option, $946, comes to $3,784 for a family of four and would earn $75.64 in Walmart Cash.

plus travel

The site also points out times in which you might be able to save money by booking a vacation package, instead of choosing your trip elements a la carte.

Now that your flights to Rome are set, you need a place to stay when you get there.

Through the Walmart travel portal, you can put in “Rome” or even a landmark in your search terms. For example, let’s say you want to stay as close to the Pantheon as possible. Simply plug that landmark in and search.

plus travel

In the search results, there's a rental property option with a loft that sleeps six people and is just steps away from the Pantheon. This property would set you back $447 per night, which means a total of $2,690 for your five-night stay (including taxes and fees). In this case, you would earn 5% Walmart Cash on the property rental — a total of $134.51 for the stay.

plus travel

That means for just the stay and flights, you’d have $210.15 to spend (or cash out) at Walmart after arriving home.

Is Walmart travel good?

The best part about WalmartTravelPlus.com is the ability to earn money you can apply to your purchases at the store. That means earning cash back is simple and directly applicable to your everyday shopping. Plus, you could maximize your cash back by charging your booking to a travel credit card that earns points or a cash-back credit card that will accelerate your cash-back amount.

As always with online travel agencies , note that flight changes can be difficult, as is earning hotel points or using elite status benefits. However, it could provide a particularly handy return on investment when booking a rental property that’s not part of a major hotel loyalty program.

Flying Tips For Plus-Sized Travelers

A ir travel can be an exciting adventure, but for plus-sized travelers, it can also present unique challenges. Navigating tight spaces, cramped seats, and sometimes judgmental attitudes can make flying a daunting experience. However, with some helpful tips and considerations, plus-sized travelers can make their journeys more comfortable and enjoyable.

Here is a list of tips for plus-sized travelers to have a smoother flight experience.

1. Seat Selection Matters

Selecting the appropriate seat is a critical consideration for plus-sized travelers. When booking your flight, opt for an aisle seat whenever possible. Aisle seats provide more room to maneuver, allowing you to access the restroom or stretch your legs without disturbing fellow passengers. Additionally, consider the seat’s location within the aircraft. Seats located towards the front of the plane typically offer more legroom and a smoother ride, making the journey more comfortable.

For a more enjoyable flying experience, it’s advisable to book your seat in advance. This ensures that you have the opportunity to choose the most accommodating seat for your needs. Keep in mind that different airlines and aircraft may have varying seat sizes and configurations. Conducting some research before booking your flight can help you identify the most suitable options.

2. Research Airlines and Planes

When planning your air travel, researching the airlines and specific aircraft you’ll be flying on is crucial. Different airlines and airplane models offer varying seat sizes and configurations. For plus-sized travelers, this information can make a substantial difference in your comfort during the flight.

First, explore the airlines themselves. Some airlines can provide more spacious seating, while others may offer narrower seats. Research customer reviews and online forums to gather insights into the experiences of other plus-sized travelers with a particular airline.

Next, consider the specific plane model you’ll be flying on. Even within the same airline, different aircraft may have different seat widths and configurations. Some planes feature wider seats in particular rows or sections, and this information can be invaluable when selecting your seat during booking.

3. Seat Belt Extenders

Seat belt extenders can be a helpful accessory to ensure your safety and comfort during the flight. If you anticipate needing a seat belt extender due to the standard seat belt being too short, it’s a good idea to request one discreetly from the flight attendants as you board the plane. By doing this quietly, you can avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself and maintain your privacy.

Most airlines are well-prepared to provide seat belt extenders, and flight attendants are accustomed to accommodating passengers who require them. These extenders are designed to securely and safely fasten your seat belt, making it comfortable and secure throughout the flight. By having a seat belt extender ready, you can alleviate concerns about in-flight safety and ensure you are prepared for a safe journey.

4. Carry an Extra Seat Cover

When it comes to enhancing your comfort during air travel, carrying an extra seat cover or cushion can make a significant difference. Plus-sized travelers often find that these simple accessories provide extra padding and alleviate discomfort during long-haul flights.

Seat covers or cushions come in various styles and materials, allowing you to choose one that suits your preferences. They can be especially helpful when the standard seat padding doesn’t provide sufficient support. Additionally, a seat cover can help reduce pressure points and promote better posture throughout the flight.

Bringing an extra seat cover can be particularly beneficial on long journeys, as it can help reduce fatigue and discomfort, allowing you to arrive at your destination feeling more refreshed. Plus, these accessories are typically lightweight and easy to transport, making them a convenient addition to your travel essentials.

5. Dress Comfortably

Choosing the right clothing for your flight is also essential. Opt for loose-fitting, breathable attire that allows for comfort during the journey. Wearing layers can be particularly advantageous, as it enables you to adapt to changing cabin temperatures throughout the flight. Layers can easily be added or removed as needed.

Consider clothing made from natural, breathable materials such as cotton or linen, as these fabrics can help regulate your body temperature. Avoid clothing that is tight, restrictive, or constricting, as it can cause discomfort during long flights.

In addition to your clothing choices, consider wearing compression socks. These socks can help prevent swelling in the legs during extended periods of sitting. They promote healthy blood circulation, reducing the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and enhancing your overall comfort.

6. Overhead Space

Travelers should be aware of the limitations of overhead compartments on airplanes. These compartments are often limited in space, and your carry-on items may not fit comfortably.

To ensure that your essential items are accessible throughout the flight, consider packing a smaller bag that you can keep under the seat in front of you. This way, you’ll have quick access to personal items like snacks, reading materials, and electronic devices without the need to reach overhead.

When storing larger carry-on items in the overhead compartments, be mindful of fellow passengers. Try to minimize the space your bag occupies and ensure it’s stored securely to prevent shifting during the flight. This consideration helps create a smoother boarding and disembarking process for all travelers.

7. Take Advantage of Pre-Boarding Options

Many airlines offer pre-boarding for passengers with special needs, including those who may need extra time or assistance. Plus-sized travelers should take advantage of this service when available. Pre-boarding allows you to board the plane at a more leisurely pace, reducing the rush and anxiety that can sometimes accompany the standard boarding process.

By pre-boarding, you have the opportunity to find your seat, stow your carry-on items, and settle in without the pressure of a crowded cabin. This can be particularly beneficial if you need a little extra time to get comfortable and organized.

When you arrive at the gate, inquire about pre-boarding and the airline staff will guide you through the process. This service is designed to ensure that passengers with specific needs have a smooth and stress-free boarding experience, and it can greatly enhance your overall journey.

8. Speak Up

It’s essential to advocate for your needs and comfort during air travel. If you encounter any challenges or issues during your flight, don’t hesitate to speak up and communicate your concerns to the airline staff or flight attendants.

If you face difficulties with your seating or any other aspect of your journey, addressing these issues promptly can help resolve them. Airlines are generally committed to ensuring that all passengers have a comfortable and safe flight, and they are there to assist you.

Whether it’s a problem with your seat, a need for additional accommodations, or any other specific requirements, don’t be shy about requesting assistance. By communicating your needs respectfully, you can work with airline staff to find solutions that enhance your overall flying experience.

Aren’t you glad that cruise lines aren’t operated by hospitals. The food would be no bueno. Fortunately, cruise lines are partnering with Michelin star rated celebrity chefs to come up with fantastic culinary delights. Along with traditional dining options, cruise lines also have specialty dining. Variety is the spice of life as they say.  What is…

This new benefit, powered by Expedia, gives Walmart+ members the exclusive ability to get Walmart Cash by booking epic vacations

There’s still time to pack your bags – Walmart is taking its valued Walmart+ members on a new, more rewarding journey before the summer travel season becomes this fall’s show-and-tell. Beginning today, Walmart+ members can book getaways through WalmartPlusTravel.com and get Walmart Cash. Walmart+ members will receive 5% Walmart Cash on hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals and activities bookings, 2% Walmart Cash on all flights and a blended rate of Walmart Cash on vacation packages 1 .

Travel booking on WalmartPlusTravel.com is powered by Expedia Group’s White Label Template technology, giving Walmart+ members access to more than 900,000 properties, 500+ airlines, 100+ car rental companies and thousands of activities around the world. This new offering will make shopping for travel a win-win for Walmart+ members as they begin getting Walmart Cash, previously Walmart Rewards , on all aspects of their vacation getaways.

“We’re bringing together the ultimate savings membership and vacation booking site to deliver a first-ever travel-focused benefit for Walmart+ members,” said Venessa Yates, senior vice president and general manager of Walmart+. “Combined with our other benefits – including free delivery, streaming and savings on fuel – we’re creating a membership that saves customers time and money, whether they’re at home or having fun at their favorite vacation destination.”

Here’s how it works:

  • Easy to find: Walmart+ members will access travel through their member benefits hub in the app or WalmartPlusTravel.com.
  • Easy to book: Members can choose travel options like flights, hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals, packages and activities.
  • Easy to earn : After the booking is confirmed, any Walmart Cash received will appear in the member’s Walmart wallet. Walmart Cash will become available 30 days after travel is completed and can be used on future Walmart purchases or cashed out in store.

“We’re delighted to launch this collaboration with Walmart, America’s largest retailer, making planning, shopping and booking travel a new and seamless part of Walmart’s shopping experience. Together, we’re connecting Walmart’s massive customer base with Expedia Group’s extensive array of travel supply partners from all around the world,” said Ariane Gorin, president of Expedia for Business. “What’s exciting is that with this collaboration, Walmart customers will benefit from Expedia’s ongoing innovation through TravelOS, our A.I.-powered travel operating system, as we continue to add new product and feature updates to drive the best traveler experience.”  Walmart+ members will also have access to Expedia Group’s top tier, end-to-end customer service, handling all their travel needs from start to finish. Whether via live agents or by leveraging the company’s self-serve capabilities, like their A.I.-powered Virtual Agent tool, Expedia Group’s services allow members to ask questions about their trip or make changes with ease.

Walmart+ is consistently evolving to deliver what’s most important for members, most recently with the evolution of Walmart Rewards to Walmart Cash, the same great program, under a new name and with the added ability to cash-out in store. Over time, some of the components of Walmart Cash will expand to all customers, while additional ways to get Walmart Cash will remain exclusive to members, like Walmart+ Travel.

For more information about how to become a Walmart+ member, please visit https://www.walmart.com/plus .

1  For example, if the package consisted of a hotel + flight, the Walmart Cash received would be 5% Walmart Cash on the hotel element and 2% Walmart Cash on the flight element.

Sitting upright for hours on end can be incredibly uncomfortable, but a travel pillow can make your trip a lot more tolerable. Whether embarking on a red-eye flight or taking the train, the best travel pillows will be comfy, supportive, and portable.

We tested 24 travel pillows based on traits like comfort, durability, portability, and quality. We narrowed down the best options while using the accessory for road trips, long-haul flights, and train rides. Our top pick for the best travel pillow overall is Cabeau The Neck's Evolution S3. We love that this pillow folded down into its own, compact carrying case and comes with a washable cover to keep it fresh between trips. We also found the best pillow choices for travelers who like a softer or firmer pillow along with styles that are perfect for middle seats and budget-conscious travelers, too.

Best Overall

Cabeau tne s3 travel pillow.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.8 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The seat strap system keeps the pillow in place and prevents painful neck cramps.

It can feel stiff at first and takes some getting used to.

This soft and supportive travel pillow is the perfect accessory for long trips, whether you're in the car or in the air. The pillow itself can attach to any headrest with adjustable straps to prevent your head from sagging or falling into uncomfortable positions while sleeping. There's also an adjustable chin strap for added comfort and security. The pillow's exterior fabric is soft and cozy, yet breathable so you don't feel too hot or constricted although it can take some time to find your perfect position.

We also love that the pillow case is machine washable. We tested this pillow on a long international trip where it really got tossed around on planes, trains, and buses, so it felt great to wash the cover at the end of the trip, making it good as new. Despite its fairly large size, the pillow is also quite portable as it rolls up into a compact carrying case that can attach to a bag's exterior or slip into larger backpacks and totes.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Cushion lab ergonomic travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that allows travelers to adjust the amount of support needed.

It can have a snug fit.

The Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow can make your trip much more comfortable, whether in the middle seat of a plane or a car. With an ergonomic design, one side of the pillow is larger than the other to support the chin if your head tilts while sleeping, and the back has a cushion that is contoured to keep the head in an upright position. During testing, the neck pillow provided a comfortable rest for the chin, and we didn’t feel too hot while wearing it. Although the cushion fits snugly around the neck, it didn’t take long to get used to it, and we could nap comfortably during a train and car ride. The buckled strap was easy to adjust, and we liked having the ability to spin the pillow around to use the asymmetrical sides and back to find the most comfortable position for sleeping in the window and middle seats. With a soft, recycled polyester exterior and Cushion Lab’s extra-dense memory foam, the quality of the travel pillow is luxurious and sturdy, and it folds into a small ball to fit inside a carrying bag that can clip onto a backpack or a suitcase.

Best Budget

Cloudz microbead travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 4 /5

It molds to the shape of your neck to prevent bobbing.

The cover can't be removed and washed.

The Cloudz Microbead Travel Neck Pillow is a no-frills option that offers generous neck support for a budget-friendly price. It is filled with tiny microbeads that quickly mold to the shape of your neck and prevent your head from bobbing around while sleeping. We appreciated its lightweight but sturdy feel, and that there were no signs of damage after using the neck pillow or when clipping it onto a suitcase to transport. Although the cover can’t be removed, we noted that the fabric is easy to touch up with instructions to spot clean the surface as necessary. Cozy and breathable, the travel pillow did a solid job of regulating temperature and keeping the neck warm during cold flights and cool during hot flights.

The Details: Polyester, microbeads | No portable case | Machine washable

Best Splurge

Ostrich pillow go neck pillow.

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that can accommodate neck, chin, and head support preferences.

It might warm your neck if you run hot while sleeping.

The Ostrich Pillow Go Neck Pillow feels like sleeping on a cloud. This travel pillow provided the perfect amount of neck support and comfort, allowing us to get more rest on a flight than usual. The plush memory foam filling and asymmetric design can be easily adjusted to support the neck, chin, or head with the taller or shorter sides. The materials appear high-quality and luxurious, and it rolls up to fit in a compact drawstring sack. The pillow holds its shape despite being in the bag for long periods, which leads us to believe that it will hold up well with prolonged use. The pillow cover is removable and can be machine washed, but we air dried it to ensure it didn’t shrink (and had no issues putting it back on the pillow). A must-have for those with higher budgets, this pillow allowed for better sleep and more comfort on flights.

The Details: Viscosa, memory foam | Portable case | Machine washable

Best Cooling

Cabeau evolution cool pillow.

  • Quality 4.5 /5

The mesh air vents make the pillow breathable.

It’s made of firm memory foam.

The Cabeau Evolution Cool Pillow is a great pick for travelers that get warm quickly. The pillow is designed to prevent heat from building up as you wear it as mesh vents in between two layers of cushiony memory foam filter in the air. We liked the breathability feature and moisture-wicking fabric, and said we didn’t feel overheated while using it on an airplane or road trip. While it took a moment to get situated, once the pillow was in the most comfortable position, it was extremely supportive and firm without feeling too hard. We especially liked the portability of the already lightweight pillow (thanks to its durable-feeling carrying case), and the mesh pocket for storing small accessories. This pillow quickly unfolds to its original shape despite being rolled up and going in and out of the compact case as well.

The Details: Memory foam | Portable case | Machine washable

Best Sustainable

Therm-a-rest compressible pillow.

  • Portability 4 /5

It’s made of recycled and upcycled materials that are comfortable and breathable.

It doesn’t offer neck support like a regular travel pillow.

If you’re not a fan of the typical U-shaped travel pillow, the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a great alternative. It resembles the rectangular style of a traditional pillow, and it compresses down to be easily transported whether you’re flying or camping. The recycled polyester fabric is light and breathable, and the foam filling — made from extra polyurethane foam left over after producing REI’s sleeping pads — provides a soft cushion for your head. We also loved how durable it is, especially for various uses like camping, flying, or taking a nap at home. While the pillow doesn’t come with a carrying bag, it has a toggle strap to compress it into a smaller size and a built-in cover that you fold the pillow into for protection while traveling.

The Details: Recycled polyester, polyurethane foam fill | No portable case | Machine washable

Best for Window Seats

J-pillow chin-supporting neck pillow.

It’s easy and intuitive to use for resting your chin and head.

It could be more supportive when you’re leaning against a window.

The J-Pillow Chin-supporting Neck Pillow has a J-shape that wraps around the neck to support the chin and the front, back, and one side of the head. Despite the different design than a typical U-shaped travel pillow, it is easy to use and fits securely while sleeping or resting during travels. The pillow comes with a compact case that can be attached to a piece of luggage to make traveling with it effortless. After being folded up in the carrying case for some time, the J-shape didn’t falter, and remained supportive and soft. We think the J-Pillow is ideal for any type of traveler since it's very portable and lightweight.

The Details: Polyester, memory foam | Portable case | Machine washable

Travel + Leisure / Jennifer May

Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow

  • Durability 4.5 /5

It’s supportive without feeling too stiff.

This would be best for travelers who know they prefer a firm travel pillow.

We love the comfortable and supportive Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow for travelers that like a firmer neck pillow. The buckle strap adjusts accordingly to fit around your neck, and offers 360-degree support on the chin, jaw, and back. We loved how you can lean back in the car or plane, and the back of the neck doesn't fall backward. In addition to having exceptional support, the Aeris travel pillow folds into a small ball and easily fits into the circular carrying case that can clip onto a backpack or suitcase without being a noticeable nuisance. The holder also has a frontal slip pocket for storing the earplugs and eye mask that are included with the travel pillow. After a trip, the carrying case can be unzipped and machine washed, although we recommend air drying it to prevent any possibility of shrinkage.

The Details: Velour, polyester, memory foam | Portable case | Machine washable

Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp

Best Side Support

Cabeau evolution s3 travel pillow.

  • Durability 4 /5

This pillow is soft and durable.

The suede-like outer material has a tendency to pick up lint.

This travel pillow was designed to keep your head and neck supported for even the longest of flights. Not only is the semicircular pillow adjustable, so you can get the shape perfect for you, it also features and adjustable seat strap to prevent your head from dropping while you rest. Right out of the box, we loved the high-quality of the memory foam, which makes it supportive and soft, and the cover material feels great against the skin. It gives users a great balance of softness and support. To keep your pillow protected and prevent any risk that it will end up getting dragged across the airport floor, this also comes with a compact carrying case that compresses down to fit into carry-on luggage.

The Details: Polyester, microsuede, memory foam | Portable case | Machine- washable

Travel + Leisure / Erin Johnson

Gingerlily Silk Travel Pillow

  • Portability 3 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

To protect your hair and skin throughout your travels, a silk pillow is the way to go.

It's 12 x 16 inches, so make sure you have plenty of room to pack it.

For those who love sleeping on silk pillowcases at home, this mini version for travel is an absolute must. Yes, it can be pricey to buy silk travel accessories , but it's also expensive to ruin a blowout and have to find a salon on vacation (and there's no price to be put on fresh, clean skin). This silk pillow is smaller than a standard pillow at 12 inches wide and 16 inches long, but can still be used in bed in a pinch and is perfect for trains, planes, and cars — just make sure you have the space in your carry-on bag. After using this pillow for multiple long trips, it shows no signs of loose stitches, fraying, or pilling. Rather, the pillow feels like it will last without ever going limp or flat.

The Details: Mulberry silk, cotton sateen, polyester

Other Travel Pillows We Liked

While we were able to narrow down the travel pillows for our best list, there were some that almost made the cut but didn’t due to a few weaknesses noted by our testers.

Hest Pillow : This standard pillow is on the softer side yet still provides support and comfort while laying on it, but the fabric is slightly itchy, and it’s bulky to carry around, even when compressed.

Gingerlily Silk Travel Neck Pillow : We love that this pillow is high-quality and made with luxurious material, but it doesn't come with a carrying case, which we think you would need to keep this pillow protected.

Cabeau Evolution Classic Travel Neck Pillow : While the memory foam is the perfect balance of firm and soft, we found this pillow to be just a bit too bulky for frequent travel.

Travel + Leisure / Daniela Galvez

We sent out 24 travel pillows to our testing experts to use during their upcoming trips. To thoughtfully curate this list, we researched popular options to fit a variety of comfort preferences, including pillows made of memory foam and microbeads, and tested different shapes, too.

On a scale of one to five, our testers rated the pillows based on comfort, quality, durability, and portability. The pillows with the best comfort scores met or exceeded our expectations for special features, including cooling, firmness, softness, or other claims by the manufacturer. Our testers used the pillows for several hours at a time, if not longer, to see how comfy they were while sleeping, reading, or watching a movie while traveling. We asked our testers to note if they were able to sleep with the pillow on, if it caused any neck pain or discomfort, and how warm or cool the pillow felt around the neck. To check for quality and durability, our testers examined the build of the pillow to feel how well-made it appeared. After using the pillows during trips, they judged durability based on their functionality after several uses. The pillows with the highest score for portability were able to compress down into carrying bags that allow travelers to transport the pillow with exceptional ease. The best pillows also kept their shape after being tucked away into a case and always sprang back into their original form with no signs of damage.

Tips for Buying a Travel Pillow

Prioritize neck support.

When it comes to sleeping in planes, trains, or cars, you should focus on your neck and head support. When your head drops during sleep, it restricts your breathing and can leave you with a sore neck or even a headache. Your travel pillow should be supportive enough that your neck stays securely upright without feeling as though you're being squeezed.

Portability is key

Whether you pack light or over-pack, a travel pillow that compacts into a small carrying case is ideal for bringing along on trips. Of course, some travel pillows don’t compress, but they should still be easy to clip onto a suitcase and not bump into too many things if you’re traversing an airport or train station.

Consider the filling material

Travelers who like a more firm pillow should opt for a memory foam filling that can offer more support than an inflatable alternative. Microbead pillows can be just as supportive as memory foam ones, but they tend to be on the softer side and more suited to travelers that like a little less structure while sleeping.

Generally, washing instructions will be included with the purchase of a travel pillow or on its tag. Removable covers can usually go through a machine wash, but many of our testers opted to air dry the cover to prevent any shrinkage that could happen in a dryer. If a pillow doesn’t have a removable cover, you can spot clean the pillow by using a wet cloth or rag dipped into soapy water.

Most standard travel pillows have a semicircular shape that wraps around the neck to support the neck, head, and chin. These U-shaped pillows often have memory foam or microbead filling, but there are also inflatable neck pillows. In addition, standard pillows make great travel pillows, and plenty of rectangular-styled pillows compress down for better portability. Finally, while traditional pillows might be better suited for a traveler in the window seat, there are unique J-shaped travel pillows that are perfect for supporting the neck and head of someone sitting in the middle or aisle seat.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

plus travel

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

The World’s Top Sustainable Stays for the Conscious Traveler

These hotels prove that luxury doesn’t have to cost the earth, offering a guilt-free ticket to paradise that doesn’t skimp on pampering or planet-saving.

plus travel

In a world where "eco-friendly" has become as trendy as avocado toast, the hospitality industry is stepping up its game, tossing greenwashing aside for genuine earth-loving initiatives . The modern traveler isn't wooed by the mere absence of plastic straws or a lonely recycling bin in the corner. They're scouting for true environmental guardians—hotels that are not just dipping their toes, but diving headfirst into the sustainability pool.

With the hotel industry's hefty 289,700-ton annual waste line and a carbon footprint that's hard to ignore, the call for an eco-revolution is louder than ever. We're talking about more than just slapping solar panels on the roof or offering organic cotton sheets. This is about integrating eco-smarts from the ground up: energy efficiency that's not an afterthought, waste management that doesn't end at the bin and food that's so local it practically walks onto your plate.

Sustainability isn’t simply about the eco-chic architecture or green operations at these hotels. It's also about embracing the neighborhood, from giving back to local communities and stirring up job opportunities, to championing cultural heritage with gusto. They buddy up with conservation groups to shield the local fauna and flora, turning guests into eco-warriors with hands-on conservation gigs and deep dives into the area’s one-of-a-kind biodiversity. It’s a full-circle eco-love affair, proving that saving the planet can be part of your vacation itinerary.

So, let's raise a glass (a reusable one, of course) to the very best sustainable hotels around the world. They're proving that luxury doesn't have to cost the earth, offering a guilt-free ticket to paradise that doesn't skimp on pampering or planet-saving. If you’re ready for your next green getaway, consider these trailblazers who are setting the new gold standard for travel that's as kind to the globe as it is glamorous.

Our live coverage of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza has moved  here .

UN committee fails to reach consensus on full Palestinian membership, Security Council president says

From CNN’s Richard Roth and Michael Rios

A specialized UN committee failed to reach a consensus Thursday on Palestinian membership in the United Nations, according to the president of the UN Security Council.

Two-thirds of the committee members were in favor of moving on with membership, with many countries arguing that “Palestine fulfills all the criteria that are required” to be granted full state member status, Malta's Ambassador and Security Council President Vanessa Frazier said.

She added that no one explicitly objected to the membership qualifications.

Frazier also said she would circulate a draft report on the deliberations as soon as Friday. If the committee doesn’t agree on the report, it could hold another meeting to iron out any differences.

Asked whether the process of deliberating Palestinian membership in the committee is now over, Frazier said, “Unless the next step of agreeing (to) the report of the committee warrants another meeting to iron out the differences, it’s not foreseen that there would be any further committee action.”

But she noted that any UN Security Council member can still table a resolution to vote on Palestinian membership at any time, regardless of the committee's report.

The US and Middle East brace for a possible Iran attack that could escalate the conflict. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

People attend the funeral procession for seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members killed in a strike in Syria, which Iran blamed on Israel, in Tehran on April 5.

Concerns about a possible Iranian attack against Israel has prompted many diplomatic conversations around the globe.

Here are some developments on diplomacy around the threat of an attack:

  • Iran's statement: The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.
  • US and UK diplomacy: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with the foreign ministers of Turkey, China and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to tell them that countries should be urging Iran not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East after  threats made by Tehran against Israel,  according to a State Department spokesperson. The top US general for the Middle East is also in Israel . Additionally, Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict .
  • Israel receives US support: Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with Blinken and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The US officials expressed the country's support for Israel against Iranian threats. Gallant warned that such an attack could lead to a regional escalation.
  • Travel restrictions: The US State Department restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran. “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted. US officials  are on high alert  for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.

Meanwhile, here's some other updates:

  • Hamas on hostages: A member of Hamas' political bureau said   a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations. "Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza, Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose."
  • Updates on aid to Gaza: It is clear that Israel is working to ramp up humanitarian aid to Gaza, but it has not yet implemented all of the measures it has announced, a top United Nations humanitarian official said. Aid coming in trucks from Israel has to be "segregated from water, from food, from medical items" before it goes into Gaza, said Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem. “Getting 400 trucks from Kerem Shalom doesn't mean 400 trucks go into Gaza,” he said, adding that the logistical complications are numerous, and take time to resolve. He also said Israel’s restrictions on movement inside the strip complicate matters.

Anera charity resumes work in Gaza after pausing when Israeli strike killed 7 World Central Kitchen staff

From CNN's Tala Alrajjal and Mohammed Tawfeeq

American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) has resumed Gaza operations "after a temporary pause" following an airstrike that killed seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers on April 1.

"As you know, the decision to temporarily pause our operations was not an easy one. We followed the direction of our staff in Gaza, who've faced death, loss, and destruction since the start of the war," Sean Carroll, the president and CEO of Anera, said in a statement on Thursday. "After the killing of Anera staff member Mousa Shawwa , followed by the attack that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen, we made the difficult but necessary decision to pause aid operations on April 2," Carroll added in the statement.

Carroll said Israeli authorities informed him during a meeting Thursday that "certain measures would be taken to protect humanitarian aid workers in Gaza – including Anera's staff."

"With the full support of our Gaza team, we have determined that the circumstances have changed sufficiently to resume our vital humanitarian work in Gaza," Carroll said.

Anera on Thursday resumed "full operations in Gaza to deliver meals, food parcels, hygiene kits, tents, medical treatments, and more to families in dire need," according to the statement.

Iran says its imperative to punish Israel could have been avoided had UN Security Council condemned attack

From CNN’s Natalie Barr and Adam Pourahmadi

Emergency services work at a building hit by an air strike in Damascus, Syria, on April 1.

The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.

“Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime’s reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," the  mission said on X.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on April 1, according to a statement from the UN spokesperson Stephan Dujarric. A Security Council discussion was held on April 2 to discuss the attack, but differences among members prevented any formal action or condemnation from taking place.

The United States is on high alert and actively preparing for a “significant” attack by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region  in response to the strike in Damascus  that killed top Iranian commanders.

UK foreign secretary warns Iran not to draw Middle East into wider conflict

From CNN's Natalie Barr

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron speaks during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, DC, on April 9.

Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict following a series of escalating threats made by Iran toward Israel.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that the United Kingdom was "deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence. Iran should instead work to de-escalate and prevent further attacks," according to a post on X .

Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency on Thursday reported that Amir-Abdollahian had told Cameron that the silence from the UK and the United States following Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week only served to encourage Israel to continue waging war in Gaza and expand its conflict in the region.

US and Israeli defense leaders discuss fears of Iranian attack

From CNN’s Michael Conte in Washington, DC, Tamar Michaelis in Jerusalem and Larry Register in Atlanta

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant today to “reaffirm the US ironclad commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies,” according to a Pentagon spokesperson.

The call comes a day after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel " must be punished and it will be" following a strike on an Iranian embassy compound in Syria that killed seven Iranian officials.

Israel “will not tolerate an Iranian attack on its territory,” the statement read, adding that the two defense leaders also discussed detailed preparations “for an Iranian attack against the State of Israel.”

Gallant said an Iranian attack on Israel could lead to a regional escalation.

It is the second discussion held between Gallant and Austin over the past week, according to the statement. Gallant expressed his appreciation for Austin’s personal commitment to the security of the State of Israel and for the deepening cooperation between the defense establishments of both countries, as well as between the Israel Defense Forces and US CENTCOM.

State Department restricts personnel travel in Israel amid concerns over Iranian threats

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

The US State Department has restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran.

“Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice,” a  security alert  posted by the US Embassy Thursday said. “U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel.” “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said he would not “speak to the specific assessments that led to us to restrict our employees and family members’ personal travel, but clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel.”

“We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days,” Miller said. “Israel is in a very tough neighborhood and we have been monitoring the security situation. You saw us slightly adjust for travel warnings at the beginning of this conflict and we conduct ongoing assessments all the time about the situation on the ground.”

US officials are on high alert for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.

Hamas says ceasefire with Israel is essential to collect data on hostages held in Gaza by different groups

From CNN's Abeer Salman and Mohammed Tawfeeq

A member of Hamas' political bureau said   a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations.

"Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose," he added.

Naim's statement was in response to questions from media outlets about whether Hamas has been rejecting the latest proposal, which was made in Cairo over the weekend, because it can not release 40 hostages in the first phase of a three-stage ceasefire deal.

According to an Israeli official and a source familiar with the discussions, Hamas indicated it is currently unable to identify and track down those 40 Israeli hostages, raising fears that more hostages may be dead than are publicly known.

CNN's record of the conditions of the hostages also suggests there are fewer than 40 living hostages who meet the proposed criteria.

Biden is canceling $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers. Here's who is eligible.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 3:29 PM EDT / CBS News

The Biden administration on Friday said it's canceling $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers, with the recipients scheduled to receive emails today to alert them to their loan discharges.

The latest effort extends the debt relief provider under President Joe Biden after the Supreme Court last year blocked  his administration's plan for broad-based student loan forgiveness. With the latest batch of loan cancellations, the White House said it has forgiven about $153 billion in debt for 4.3 million student borrowers.

Biden, who had made student loan relief a major campaign pledge, is tackling an issue that affects about 43 million Americans with a combined  $1.7 trillion in student debt. It's a burden that some borrowers and their advocates say has harmed their ability to save for a home or achieve financial milestones, an issue that was echoed by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in a conference call with reporters.

"I talked to a teacher in New York this week who took out a loan for $30,000," Cardona said Friday, "and after over a decade of paying and being a teacher the debt was $60,000, and she was saying that the interest was so high that the payments that she was making wasn't even touching her principal."

He added, "We are fixing a broken system. We're relentless and taking steps to transform a broken system into one that works people across the country."

Here's what to know about who is eligible for the latest round of forgiveness.

Who qualifies for the student loan forgiveness?

Three groups of people qualify under the latest round of debt relief, the White House said.

  • $3.6 billion for 206,800 borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan.

About $3.6 billion will be forgiven for nearly 207,000 borrowers enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan, an income-driven repayment program, or IDR, that the Biden administration created last year.

The White House said borrowers who are getting their debt discharged under SAVE had taken out smaller loans for their college studies. The plan allows people to receive forgiveness after they made at least 10 years of payments if they originally took out $12,000 or less in loans to pay for college; borrowers with larger loans are eligible after 20 or 25 years of repayment, depending on what types of loans they have.

"You sacrifice and you've saved for a decade or more to make your student loan payments, and you originally borrowed $12,000 or less, you're going to see relief," Cardona told reporters. "An overwhelming number of those who qualify for SAVE were eligible for Pell grants and come from low- and middle-income communities."

  • $3.5 billion for 65,700 borrowers in income-repayment plans.

These borrowers will receive forgiveness through "administrative adjustments" to repayment plans where loan servicers had made it tougher for some borrowers to qualify for relief.

"These are people who paid for a long time but were being deprived of relief because of administrative and servicing failures," Cardona said. "These people met the contract of their loan" and will receive forgiveness.

  • $300 million for 4,600 borrowers through Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

The PSLF program is designed to help public servants like teachers and government employees achieve debt forgiveness after 10 years of repayment. It's a program that started in 2007 but had been plagued with complex rules that effectively hampered people from getting their debt discharged, with only 7,000 receiving loan forgiveness prior to the Biden administration.

With the latest round of discharges, the Biden administration has forgiven $62.8 billion in loans for 876,000 borrowers through PSLF.

Are there legal challenges to Biden's debt forgiveness plans?

In two separate lawsuits, Republican attorneys general in 18 states are pushing to have the SAVE plan tossed and to halt any further student debt cancellation. They say the SAVE plan oversteps Biden's authority and makes it harder for states to recruit employees. They also contend the plan undermines a separate cancellation program that encourages careers in public service.

It's unclear what the suits could mean for loans that have already been canceled. A court document filed by Kansas' attorney general says it's "unrealistic to think that any loan forgiveness that occurs during this litigation will ever be clawed back."
