The Best Portugal Winery Tours (2024 • Insider Guide)

Portugal – the land of great food, fine wine, and of course, the Pastéis de Nata.

It’s also one of the cheapest places to travel to in Europe and as result, it’s a popular summertime travel destination. There are some amazing beaches along the Algarve coastline that attract those seeking some much needed vitamin C as well as swimmers and surfers alike.

However, that’s not the focus of this article as we’re here to learn about Portuguese wine as well as wine tourism in the country. Portugal is one of the top 10 wine producing countries in the world, producing around 7.3 million hectoliters as of 2023.

Now, where do I fit into all of this? Over years of exploring Portugal, I’ve done some hard yards and have sorted through some of the best winery tours in Portugal that money can buy. The process has been streamlined for your convenience so that all you need to do is have a read through and get travelling.

All the tours that I’ve selected are run by knowledgeable locals who love nothing more than sharing their local wine offerings with you. I mean, who knows better than a local, right?

So, let’s dive in!

What is a Vineyard Tour?

Wine regions of portugal, the best portugal winery tours, final thoughts on portugal wine tours.

Before we get into the best of Portugal , its wine regions and the best Portugal winery tours for 2024, I’ll clarify what exactly a vineyard tour is. No, it’s not just a walk through the vineyards, although this will be part of many of the winery tours that you will come across.

A vineyard tour is essentially an excursion that takes you into the heart of a wine region and educates you about all there is to know. From the vineyards and grape varietals to the production, maturation, bottling, and everything in between.

You will be guided by the winery’s employees or if you’re lucky, the wine maker and even the owners of the estate. The day will, of course, entail wine tastings and drinking and usually a lunch or at least snacks depending on the tour length. Many tours include multiple wineries in a day so you can learn about individual producers and their unique take on wine.

Loire Wine Tour

A winery tour is also a great way to meet fellow wine enthusiasts as you traverse through the individual regions and learn all there is to know about them. They’re also highly beneficial for the owners of the wineries as they bring customers to their estates and ultimately generate sales. This mutually beneficial arrangement is welcomed by both parties involved!

Let’s now take a look at some of Portugal’s most well-known wine regions.

Our GREATEST Travel Secrets…

Portugal is blessed with a vast number of wine regions that are scattered throughout the country. Each has its own unique climate and topography and as a result, its own specialty.

You can rest assured knowing that wherever you decide to stay in Portugal , there will be a great winery not far away. The majority of the time, wineries are a little way out of the city but that’s where a vineyard tour comes in handy. You will be driven to and from the region so that you can enjoy the fruits of the wine maker’s labours.

Portugal, google maps

A quick side note – Portugal has three levels of wine quality classification that you will likely come across. They are DOC (DOP) or Denominação de Origem Controlada , Vinho Regional (IGP), and Vinho (wine) or “Table Wine”.

Right, it’s now onto the top Portuguese wine regions.

Everyone who visits Portugal travels to Lisbon , located bang in the middle of the Atlantic coastline of Portugal. The area is made up of several sub-regions such as Bucelas, Alenquer, and Colares and there’s a huge variation in climate and topography as well as a large variety of soil types.

Lisbon statue christ the king

The Bucelas DOC typically produces lighter-bodied white wines made predominantly from the Arinto grape. The Alenquer DOC on the other hand specializes in red wines with high tannin and concentration using Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Aragonês (Tempranillo), and Castelão. The Colares DOC produces more full-bodied white wines in a much more oxidative style. The Arruda DOC produces full-bodied red wines that are generally blended with other international varietals such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

The Madeira archipelago, located 600 miles (970 kilometres) southwest of Lisbon, is home to one of the most famous fortified wines in the world . All fortified wines produced in Madeira fall under the Madeira DOC, while the everyday table wines fall under Terras Madeirenses, a Vinho Regional (VR) title. Madeira is an incredibly remote region with an extremely humid environment, mountainous terrain and excellent hiking .

Madeira, Portugal

Tinta Negra Mole is the most dominant varietal planted in the region along with other common varietals including Malvasia, Verdelho, Bual, Sercial, and Folgasao. Wines from the region are also classified according to sweetness – “seco” or dry, “meio seco” or medium dry, “meio doce” or medium sweet, and “doce” or sweet. Madeira wines have various labels or titles that indicate how long they’ve been aged. “Reserve” denotes 5 years of ageing, “Special Reserve” denotes 10 years of ageing, “Extra Reserve” denotes 15 years of ageing, while the most expensive is “Vintage” which denotes 20 years of ageing.

Last but not least is the Algarve region, located in the far southwest corner of Portugal. The Algarve is one of the most popular places to stay in the entire country thanks to its beautiful beaches, which sometimes overshadow the region’s wine production. There are four DOCs in the Algarve, namely Lagoa, Lagos, Portimão, and Tavira that are responsible for the region’s wine production. The region has no shortage of sun and heat, and as a result, the wines can lack that prized acidity that contributes to freshness.

a girl standing on the edge of a cliff over looking a beach in portugal

The wines can come across as quite potent, usually with high alcohols. There is also a large variety of soils in the Algarve ranging from limestone-rich clay and sandstone to sandier soils and even mineral-rich schists closer to the coast. The main white varietals planted in the Algarve include Malvasia Fino, Maneudo, and Arinto, while the predominant red varietals include Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonês (Tempranillo), and Baga. These usually higher alcohol wines are a result of the warm maritime climate that is present in much of the region.

Vinho Verde (Minho)

Vinho Verde (Minho) is the northernmost wine region in Portugal that is most famously known for its light, crisp white wines. Vinho Verde translates to “ green wine ” in English, relating to the light and fresh nature of the wines, including the reds.

vinho verde vineyard wine tour portugal

The lighter-bodied white wines known as Branco Vinho Verde dominate the region and white varietal plantings make up around 70% of all vines planted. You can expect to find varietals such as Alvarinho, Azal, Loureiro, Arinto, and Trajadura. Crisp, tart reds known as Tinto Vinho Verde are produced in smaller quantities and are rarely found outside of Portugal. They are made from varietals such as Brancelho, Alvarelhão, Azal-Tinto, Borraçal, Espadeiro, Rabo-de-Ovelha, Padeiro-de-Basto, Vinhão, and Pedral.

Dão, located directly south of the Duoro Valley, is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Portugal . The wines are lighter in style when compared to the Duoro but carry more tannin and acidity. This is a result of higher altitude vines (between 150m and 450m above sea level) and rugged landscapes. Typical soil types include schist and granite which lend a certain minerality and freshness.

French wine

The most notable varietal planted in Dão is Touriga Nacional, the principal Port varietal in the country also used to produce full-bodied red wines along with Jaen. Dão Alfrocheiro is another one of the common wines that is found in the region and is a more medium-bodied red wine. There are also a couple of regional wines Terras de Lafões and Terras do Dão which are slightly more experimental. They blend indigenous varietals with international varietals such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay.

The Alentejo region is a massive area that covers almost a third of Portugal, located in the east of the country, boasting rolling hills, lots of sunlight, and hot temperatures. While the region is well known for its wheat production, it is also home to one of the world’s largest cork industries. The luxury of space means that there is also a huge variety of terroir along with its hot and dry conditions sans the cooling effect of the Atlantic Ocean.

Tinto Alentejo is a full-bodied red wine made predominantly from Aragonês (Tempranillo), Castelão, and Trincadeira, sometimes using Alicante Bouschet and Alfrocheiro. They are generally made as blends of the above varietals, but can also be found as single varietal wines.

Branco Alentejo are both full and medium-bodied white wines, made predominantly from Antão Vaz but also using Arinto, Fernão Pires, and Roupeiro. Alentejano (IGP/Vinho Regional) are wines made from any of the above varietals but may contain international varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, or Viognier.

Duoro Valley

And then we have the Duoro Valley, arguably the most well-known and picturesque Portuguese wine region – so much so that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site . Three subregions of the Duoro can all be found along the river. Namely, Duoro Superior, Cima Corgo, and Baixo Corgo. Each of them is unique in its expression of the continental climate that is found in the Duoro.

grape trees growing in Duoro Valley Portugal

The Duoro Valley is most famous for its red Port production, categorized into LBV Port, Tawny Port, and Vintage Port, with smaller quantities of white and pink Port. There are also lighter-bodied white wines (Tinto Branco) and full-bodied red wines (Tinto Duoro) produced in the region. Commonly planted Duoro grapes include Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão on the red side. And Viosinho, Gouveio, Rabigato, and Folgazão on the white side.

With such a vast array of wine regions, of course, there are a huge number of wineries in Portugal – in the region of 4700!

Now I know that’s a lot to sift through and try to decide on a handful to visit. But fear not. I’ve done some digging and managed to find some of the best winery tours in Portugal , for your convenience.

Let’s take a look at some of the best vineyard tour offerings below:

Duoro Valley Wine Tour

  • Porto Downtown/City Centre

Get ready for a full-day Duoro Valley vineyard tour, that starts with a drive through picturesque landscapes en route to the wineries. You will visit two local wineries and taste a total of six wines during your time there. You will also learn all about the production techniques that go into making Port and go for a walk through the vineyards.

winery tours portugal - duoro valley

It’s then on to the village of Pinhão for a traditional lunch at a local restaurant accompanied by wines from the region. The tour concludes with a leisurely boat cruise aboard a Rabelo, a local boat that is used to transport wine.

Vinho Verde Wine Tour

  • Porto, Braga, or Guimarães

Starting from where you’re staying in Porto , Braga, or Guimarães, you will be driven through the lush landscapes of the “green region” .

Vinho Verde Wine Tour

This Vinho Verde vineyard tour begins in Amarante, visiting memorials, castles, churches, and ruins, followed by some traditional regional cuisine. It’s then on to the first winery of the day to learn all about the production methods used to make the Vinho Verde, and of course, taste these deliciously fresh wines.

You will then head to the second winery of the day where you will taste more wines and learn to distinguish between different varietals. The tasting will be accompanied by some local products, too, to cap off a fun and informative day in the countryside.

Dão Wine Tour

The next vineyard visit is to an individual garagiste winery in the Dão region called Vinhos Carlos Raposo. You will learn all about the history of winemaking in the Dão region, the grape varietals used, the climate, and of course, the production techniques.

Dao Wine Tour - Portugal

The tour is conducted by the winery’s brand ambassador who doesn’t follow a set script, meaning every tour is unique. You will taste wines out of the barrel as well as recently bottled vintages which are accompanied by cheese and cured meats. It’s the perfect morning or afternoon tour for those who don’t have the luxury of time on their side.

Alentejo Wine Tour

Starting in Lisbon, you will learn about the wines from the Alentejo region as well as the region’s cork and olive industries. You will begin by exploring Évora, Alentejo’s regional capital and largest city. After discovering this UNESCO World Heritage Site , you will head off to a local winery to taste wines and have a locally-inspired lunch.

Alentejo Wine Tour Portugal

After lunch, you will head to a cork-producing farm to learn all about how that little wine bottle closure is made, from extraction to finished product. The final stop of this vineyards tour is at a local olive oil estate to learn all about the production. A tasting follows before heading back to the capital city.

Lisboa Wine Tour

This half-day wine tour is one of the best things to do in Lisbon . It combines wine tasting with an epic 4 x 4 tour and explores the town of Torres Vedras, known for its gastronomy and picturesque landscapes.

You will first visit one of the most famous mills in the area, along with its 200-year-old oven. You will then head to a local winery where you will learn all about their production and contemporary wine-making processes.

Lisbon Wine Tour

Then the fun begins – a 40-minute 4 x 4 tour through the estate learning all about the vineyards and grape varietals, followed by a wine tasting while soaking up the sun. It’s then on to a second winery visit to taste four more wines before heading back to the capital.

Madeira Wine Tour

Starting in the main place to stay in Madeira , Funchal, you will make your way through to the main wine region, Câmara de Lobos. You will stop off for an informative tasting, learning about how the famous fortified wine is made.

winery tours portugal - madeira

From there, it’s on to San Vicente to gaze upon the natural beauty, followed by lunch and wine pairings at a local house. After lunch, you will make your way to Porto Moniz to taste a few white, rosé, and red wines.

Finally, it’s back to Fuchal but not before one last surprise – one final winery visit to sample some of the finest wines from the region. You know what they say – always save the best for last.

Algarve Wine Tour

The last of the winery tours in Portugal takes us to the Algarve region for an express wine tasting at a family-run estate near Albufeira and Portimão. You will learn about the local production techniques in the region as well as taste the wines from Quinta dos Capinhas .

winery tours portugal - algarve

There are white, red, and rosé wines to taste, paired with some local tapas. The tour concludes with a leisurely stroll through the vineyards for a few photos which nicely allows you to take it all in (a lil tipsy).

Second time in Portugal after a Lisbon city break and we were looking for a more complete itinerary that took us through the iconic places of Portugal. What people love about Wine tasting Tours in Portugal

We started our vacation in Lisbon, with 4 days of guided tours with Pedro. He was wonderful - always on time, so courteous, and a wealth of information. It would be hard to find someone with more knowledge of the history of his country. He shared so much detail about each of the sites we visited, and was able to answer any questions. If you get a chance to book a tour with Pedro, do it. You won’t be disappointed!
All our guides were amazing that we had for our excursions and the customer service from Vania we received before and during our trip was exceptional. The hotels were always at great locations and on the boutique side, very close to everything and we felt very safe. We will definitely be using them again for future trips.
Brand new Mercedes coach, and our driver João took us safely & comfortably through tiny roads and the most beautiful places. He did a wonderful job explaining interesting facts, discussing many subjects, having jokes & great meals together. The hotels were very comfortable and the staff welcoming & professional. The food delicious on every stop; the pastries, coffee, beer, wine & atmosphere amazing.100% recommend this company and team. Thank you João & Sandro! Sandra & Patrick

Brief History of the Douro Valley Wine Region

The Douro Valley carries a rich historical legacy, its story woven into the steep terraced vineyards that line the riverbanks and the traditions upheld by its people. Its significance extends far beyond its geographical boundaries, with a history deeply rooted in viticulture and an enduring cultural heritage.

The Douro Valley’s viticultural history dates back over 2,000 years, with the Romans being the first to introduce organized grape cultivation in the region. But it was in the 17th century that the region truly gained international recognition, with the emergence of Port wine. This sweet, fortified wine became highly sought-after, particularly in England, transforming the Douro Valley into a vital economic region for Portugal .

The cultivation techniques used in the valley evolved over time to adapt to the challenging terrain. The steep slopes and rocky soil required innovative solutions, leading to the construction of stone-walled terraces known as “socalcos”. These terraces, still in use today, are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Douro winegrowers.

In 2001, the Douro Valley’s historical and cultural significance was recognized internationally when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site . This status acknowledges the valley’s unique landscape, which has been shaped by human activities, mainly viticulture, for centuries. The designation also attests to the region’s cultural wealth, including architectural monuments, archaeological sites, and intangible heritage such as folklore, festivals, and traditional practices.

Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site brings responsibilities along with the recognition. The valley is now subject to international standards of conservation to protect its cultural landscape. This means ensuring sustainable development, preserving traditional cultivation practices, and maintaining the balance between nature and human activities.

Winemaking in the Douro Valley

Viticulture is the lifeblood of the Douro Valley, its tradition and significance deeply embedded in the fabric of the region. It’s here, amid the dramatic, terraced landscape, where the art of winemaking not just flourishes, but thrives in its full glory.

At the heart of the region’s winemaking legacy is Port wine. Born from a unique combination of the Douro Valley’s terroir and centuries-old winemaking techniques, Port is a fortified wine, rich, sweet, and often enjoyed as a dessert wine. It gained prominence in the 17th century when England, amidst a political conflict with France, began importing this robust wine from Portugal. The Douro Valley’s vineyards were swiftly demarcated for the production of this now-famed wine, making it the world’s first officially designated wine region.

Port wine comes in several styles, the most common being Ruby and Tawny. Ruby Port is known for its rich, fruity flavors and deep red color, while Tawny Port, aged in wooden barrels, is characterized by its nutty flavors and amber hue. There’s also Vintage Port, considered the finest of all, made from the best grapes of a single exceptional year and aged in the bottle for many years.

Though renowned for Port, the Douro Valley is no one-trick pony. The region also produces outstanding red and white still wines. Reds are typically robust, with dense fruit flavors, while whites are often fresh and aromatic, showcasing the versatility of the region’s indigenous grape varieties.

As you traverse the Douro Valley, you’ll find an array of quintas (wine estates) open for visits and tastings. Some of the prominent ones include Quinta do Noval , known for its top-notch Vintage Ports; Quinta do Crasto , acclaimed for both its high-quality Ports and still wines; and Quinta de La Rosa , a family-run estate offering a diverse range of wines, including the increasingly popular Douro reds.

Gastronomy in the Douro

In the Douro Valley, the gastronomic experience is as integral to the region’s charm as its sweeping landscapes and esteemed wines. The local cuisine, much like its viticulture, is a testament to the region’s bounty and the local people’s culinary craft.

The gastronomy of the Douro Valley is deeply rooted in its land, utilizing the freshest local produce, meat, and fish. It’s a hearty cuisine, with robust flavors and generous portions that pair wonderfully with the region’s wines. Whether it’s the succulent meats, fresh river fish, or garden-grown vegetables, each dish tells a story of the region’s agricultural abundance and culinary traditions.

A gastronomic tour of the Douro Valley wouldn’t be complete without tasting some of its iconic dishes. Try the ‘Posta à Mirandesa’, a thick, juicy steak sourced from local cattle and grilled to perfection, or the ‘Bacalhau à Braga’, a codfish dish served with crispy potato matchsticks. For the adventurous palate, ‘Cabrito assado no forno’ or roast goat is a local delicacy often prepared for celebrations and special occasions. Don’t forget to finish your meal with a local sweet treat, like ‘Toucinho do céu’, a rich almond cake.

When it comes to dining, the Douro Valley offers a diverse range of options, from family-run taverns to luxurious wine estate restaurants. DOC (Cais da Folgosa, Estrada Nacional 222, 5110-214 Folgosa, Portugal: +351 254 858 123 ), located on the banks of the Douro River, offers gourmet cuisine with a contemporary twist, and their wine list is simply superb.

At the rustic Tasca da Quinta (R. do Marquês de Pombal 42 R/C, 5050-282 Peso da Régua, Portugal: +351 962 800 873 ), you’ll find traditional dishes that take you on a culinary journey through the region’s flavors.

From the fabulous boat trip on a solar powered boat to tasting amazing wines and the exclusive lunch (and more great wines) at a scenic quinta (vineyard), this was most definitely the highlight of our trip to the Porto area (and we had a wonderful time throughout Porto). Our guide, Joao, was so personable and attentive to all of us, in addition to being knowledgeable about the region. If you would like to experiencing all the Douro River Valley has to offer and only have one day to do so, please take this tour. We are so glad we did! The Porto Wine Caves in Vila Nova da Gaia

portugal winery tour

The Porto Wine Caves in Vila Nova da Gaia are a series of historic cellars located on the south side of the Douro River, across from Porto. They are known for their main product — fortified port wine.

Dating back to the 17th century, the production of Port wine involved adding grape spirit to halt fermentation, a method that preserved the wine during transportation and gave it a distinct flavor. The cellars in Vila Nova da Gaia have been central to the aging and storage of this wine, preserving winemaking techniques over the centuries.

portugal winery tour

Traditionally, the Port wine from the Douro Valley wineries was transported to these cellars via the Douro River using Rabelo boats. These flat-bottomed, traditional vessels were specifically designed for navigating the sometimes treacherous river currents. This historical practice is why many of the wine cellars in Vila Nova da Gaia are strategically located along or near the riverbanks, facilitating easy offloading and storage of the wine

These caves, some of which have been carved into the rock, showcase the art and science of winemaking in the region. Visiting the area, you can tour the cellars, learn about the winemaking process, and of course try samples of various Port wine varieties.

Getting to Vila Nova Da Gaia from Porto

If you want to get to Vila Nova da Gaia, you can take two different routes. The first is the Ponte de Dom Luís I bridge —built in 1886, this bridge links Porto and Gaia. You have the option to cross at either the upper or lower level. To access the main cellars, it is best to cross at the lower level.

For a more unique and faster way across, there is a boat taxi service that is around 3-4 euros each way and will take around 5 minutes to cross the Douro River.

Another notable mention is Ferreira, a cellar with deep roots in Portuguese tradition and history, offering a unique insight into the region’s winemaking heritage. Sandeman, with its iconic logo and long-standing reputation, also stands out as a key player in the Port wine industry.

Which port tour is the best in Porto?

It’s definitely not easy to say what is the absolute best port wine tour in Porto as it depends a lot on your personal preferences. However, tours from winemakers like Sandeman, Taylor’s, or Cálem are highly rated.

Brett and I want to formally thank you for an amazing day. We have said many times that we have truly been blessed with the best over our holidays. We have been in many countries over the past month and Lisbon has been our favourite. We enjoyed our day today more than you could ever know. We gave your card to 4 Irish ladies that we were at dinner with and we hope that you can meet them as well. Thank you for the amazing day! You have been such a pinnacle part of our Portugal experience , you are truly amazing at what you do and what you bring to people.

It was not difficult to say great things about our day with you! We all agreed it was a highlight of our entire trip.

We had the best time, next time we are in Portugal we will definitely come on another trip, and bring more bags to take a few more bottles home. It's not often you can meet someone with such a passion. On behalf of Ashley and myself thank you.

Thank you once again for the amazing experience. Even before the engagement, it was one of the best days we had on our trip. Sintra, lunch and all the wine was so lovely. And I’ll say it again - Portugal is an amazing country and if we could do it again we would give 80% of our time to Portugal, and 20% to Spain. I guess that means we just need to book another trip - perhaps a honeymoon in Porto! Also, a big thank you for making our engagement day so wonderful - I had no idea it was coming, and Ryan and I both send our thanks for making it so special. What a perfect setting to start this new chapter of our life.

Dear Armando. I'm so happy you are pleased. We're still remembering all the extra things you did for us and feel extremely fortunate to have spent those days with you. I would so love to return....the family would love it. Let's hope we can do that. I did read the other comments about your tours and saw that they were "above and beyond" the ordinary. Your joy in what you do definitely resonates with everyone.

Logan and I are missing Portugal so much, and Logan has been listening to Fado non-stop and cooked a Portuguese inspired dinner last night (which was pretty good).

Thanks Armando, we had such a great time, it was by far the best wine tour we've been on! And we were even able to fit all the wine in our suitcases without having to pay extra for overweight luggage!

Thank you so much Armando. It was such a wonderful day that we will never forget. We will definitely be recommending you to our friends that visit and hope to come back soon and do another tour! You were an excellent guide and we will miss Portugal!

Many thanks Armando for the amazing half day we spent with you, It made us love Portugal even more and we know that we earned a friend for sure!

Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . Viking River Cruises also offers an intimate longship journey through the Douro.

Table wine and port wine are produced here and shipped all over the world. Spend the day exploring vineyards, crushing grapes with your feet or sampling local wines. In addition to wine tasting , visitors can take a river cruise on the Douro River, go hiking and visit a natural park. Plus, be sure to explore the valley’s villages. Read about these activities, and more, with our roundup of the 6 best things to do in Douro Valley Portugal.

1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from Pinhão or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit Pinhão train station, built in 1937. Pinhão is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in Pinhão. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

Douro Valley self-guided wine tour from Porto

And so in spring 2024, we decided to make up for lost time and spend a few weeks in the Douro Valley. We were actually staying up in the mountains, in a tiny village called Vinhos (population: 176!) in the Vila Real District, but this time we had plenty of opportunity to explore the food and restaurants, and to take our own Douro Valley wine tour. I’ve written this article in the format of a day trip from Porto, because that’s how the majority of first-time visitors experience the Douro, but in fact I pieced this itinerary together over a few different outings from our digs in Vinhos.

Travel to, and transport from, Porto

The city of Porto is accessible by plane via all the usual airlines: Transavia and KLM from the Netherlands; TAP Air Portugal , easyJet and Ryanair from the UK. Having spent a few days exploring, eating and drinking in Porto (more on that in my Porto restaurant guide ), you have a couple of different options for reaching the Douro:

  • Take the train to Pinhão – this takes around 2 hours and 20 minutes and is the cheapest option;
  • Rent a car and self-drive – we found this to be the easiest and quickest option (at around 1 hour and 45 minutes from Porto to Pinhão) but is of course pricier;
  • Travel by boat – these are usually in the form of organised cruises, and as such this self-guided wine tour won’t really apply.

This itinerary is based on the driving option, although you could do most of it by train as well.

Morning: boat cruise from Pinhão

Pinhão is arguably the geographical heart of port wine country, so it makes a logical location to start your day. It’s a picturesque little town in its own right, perched on the north bank of the Douro River, and gets very busy in high season. We were there in April and it was ideal: warm but not too hot, not particularly crowded, and very green. Pinhão is also home to one of the most beautiful railway stations Portugal, with impressive tile panels that depict the history of life in the Douro (and a good reason to take the train!).

Lunchtime: Cardanho dos Presuntos

You’re going to be doing some serious wine tasting in the afternoon and evening, so it’s a good idea to keep lunch light to avoid getting too sleepy. (Or perhaps you’d prefer to make it heavy to soak up the alcohol?) Anyway, that was our thinking when we went to Cardanho dos Presuntos in Pinhão for lunch: presunto means ham in Portuguese, so you can expect plenty of variations on cured pork, plus cheeses, bread and a few other nibbles. Pair with a refreshing glass of Douro rosé and you’re all set to hit the quintas …

Winery 1: Quinta do Bomfim

Just past the train station (in the opposite direction to the boats), you’ll reach Quinta do Bomfim – a winery that I was surprised to discover is owned by the British Symington family (in fact, a lot of the port houses are owned by British families). But try not to let that put you off because it really is breathtaking. Guided tours are available, but even if all you do is sit on the terrace overlooking the river, you will feel like an insanely glamourous rich person. Luckily, you do not need to actually be an insanely glamorous rich person (I am a freelance writer in pyjamas 90% of the time) – you’ll be treated like royalty anyway. It probably helped that the women serving us fell in love with our tiny dog, but she was also a fountain of knowledge and enthusiasm about the port wines we tasted.

I went for a 1998 Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) and a 20-year aged Tawny port, both from Dow’s (Dow’s is the brand name, but they come from the same quinta ). Both had the benefit of not being overly sweet, but the LBV had a firm tannic structure and clear ruby fruits, while the Tawny sang with gently oxidised caramel, apricots and nuts. Then again, pretty much anything would’ve tasted amazing with that view…

Winery 2: Quinta do Tedo

The N222 road, which connects Pinhão to Peso da Régua, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful driving roads in the world. Which is why my next winery pick – Quinta do Tedo – is about a 15-minute drive from Pinhão alongside the river. This is the only part of the itinerary it wouldn’t be possible to do by train, but you could by boat. The views from Quinta do Tedo are spectacular (although you’ll have come to expect that by this point), orienting towards the Tedo tributary to the south.

Quinta do Tedo also offers plenty of award-winning port to taste, but we decided to try a couple of their unfortified wines instead. Their rosé was nothing to write home about, but we couldn’t get enough of their 2019 reserva red blend, which was smooth with oaky vanilla and ripe with black cherries and plums. I bought a bottle to take home with us, and they gave us the tasting glasses for free, which was a welcome surprise!

Evening: Peso da Régua

From Quinta do Tedo, continue along the N222 in the same direction for another 16 kilometres and you’ll reach Peso da Régua: less visually appealing than Pinhão but equally accessible by train and with plenty of good restaurants and wine bars to tempt the curious vinophile…

Dinner: Castas e Pratos

With its chic downstairs wine bar, its upstairs restaurant overlooking the train tracks, and its quiet but expansive terrace outside, Castas e Pratos is the kind of multi-functional space that looks like it would suit a range of occasions. You could stick with the wine and snacks theme, but I’d recommend going all-in for a proper dinner on the elegant rail-side terrace.

The wine list is a tad intimidating: you’re faced with 104 pages of Portuguese wines, from €20 house wine up to bottles costing well over €1,000. Frustratingly, having finally chosen one, they’d sold out – so I cut my losses and went back to the selection on the first page. We eventually ended up with the 2020 Lote 5 reserva, because (let’s face it) you can’t really go wrong with a Douro red blend.

Castas e Pratos’ menu is more creative than many you’ll come across in Portugal, which made a welcome change. To start, we tried the foie gras with pineapple chutney and port wine reduction, which I should perhaps have paired with a port. Next, we split two mains: the black pork with black truffle and egg on toast, and the grilled octopus, which was so meltingly tender that Mr Foodie declared it the best octopus he’d ever eaten. I don’t usually do dessert, but on this occasion I felt like trying “The Lemon”: it was essentially a lemon cheesecake but formed in the shape of an entire lemon. It was, as you might expect, very lemony!

Pre- or post-dinner drinks: Pecados do Vinho

Right next to Castas e Pratos along the same little strip, you’ll find a generous handful of wine-focused bars – each serving their own selections of Portuguese wines, from Douro ports to sparkling whites to classic reds. We particularly liked Pecados do Vinho , which felt small and intimate but still had a huge selection (the walls are lined with wine bottles in every direction). Before dinner, go for a local aperitif: white port mixed with tonic and a twist of lemon zest – an intensely refreshing way to enjoy port when it’s still warm outside. After dinner, pop back for a full-bodied vintage port – the perfect way to end the night…
