The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie Announce 2023 Tour
By Madison Bloom
The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie have announced a co-headlining tour taking place next fall. The 2023 dates will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their respective 2003 records: Give Up and Transatlanticism . Bandleader Benjamin Gibbard will pull double-duty each night of the tour, as his bands perform the albums front-to-back. The trek also marks the first live performances from the Postal Service in a decade. Find the full tour schedule below and scroll down for a trailer video.
“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” Gibbard said in a press release. “The Postal Service record came out; Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”
Give Up is the most recent studio album from the Postal Service, although the group did issue a soundtrack to the 2014 concert film, Everything Will Change , back in 2020. Death Cab for Cutie shared their latest LP, Asphalt Meadows , earlier this year. They are currently on tour behind the release.

Ben Gibbard Is Pulling Double Duty on the Fall’s Hottest Indie Rock Tour
The veteran singer-songwriter is celebrating key anniversaries with Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service.

Late last year, Ben Gibbard was staring down a pair of significant milestones: Death Cab for Cutie’s breakthrough album, Transatlanticism , would be turning 20 in 2023, as would Give Up , the lone full-length that Gibbard and electronic artist Jimmy Tamborello released as The Postal Service. Death Cab’s management suggested separate 20th-anniversary tours, but Gibbard envisioned a two-for-one nostalgia jamboree.
Indeed, the Give Up / Transatlanticism joint tour will bring both indie touchstones to arena and theater crowds beginning Sept. 5, with stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden and two hometown gigs at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena among 31 scheduled dates (up from 17 when the tour was announced in December). Gibbard will naturally pull double duty — performing Transatlanticism front-to-back with Death Cab and all of Give Up with Tamborello and Jenny Lewis, who provided backing vocals on six album tracks.
Why Acts Like Weezer and Blink-182 Are Becoming Touring’s New Titans
For Gibbard, the tour will revisit the most pivotal year of his career. Death Cab, which formed in 1997, famously came close to breaking up in late 2001 after touring and recording at a breakneck pace. The subsequent downtime gave a then-25-year-old Gibbard the space to craft the foundation of Transatlanticism , as well as work with Tamborello on an indie-pop side project by mailing CD-Rs to each other (hence the name The Postal Service).
“All of a sudden, I found myself with a lot of time to meander creatively,” recalls Gibbard, now 47. “I felt very confident, and maybe a little bit cocky. I could musically wander and explore the space, and it was very fruitful for me.”
Give Up turned into a blog-adored cult classic, while Transatlanticism took Death Cab “from indie-rock popular” to “ popular popular,” as Gibbard puts it. Although Give Up peaked at No. 45 on the Billboard 200 and Transatlanticism at No. 97, they’ve earned 1.8 million and 1.1 million equivalent album units, respectively, according to Luminate.
While Death Cab was just on the road in support of its 10th album, 2022’s Asphalt Meadows , the upcoming tour will mark The Postal Service’s first concerts in a decade, since Give Up turned 10. For Gibbard, these Postal Service shows will be slightly different — unlike in 2013, Give Up will be played in order, without B-sides or covers — but performing again with Tamborello and Lewis will be just as fulfilling.
“These are two of my best friends, that I get to spend extended time with on this trip,” says Gibbard. “We get to celebrate this record that we made, that became this kind of lauded moment in indie rock — but also, it’s a celebration of our friendship.”

Recent tour reviews
The Postal Service are not the easiest act to catch live. Having stumbled upon and instantly fallen in love with their album Give Up in the early 2000s, I had to wait 10 years before they decided to go on tour. It's not so much that they broke up as a band - more that they were never really together.
Having started as a duo collaborating through the post (hence the name), their music doesn't translate to the stage as easily as some other bands, but they somehow manage to hit that sweet spot between electronic beats and raw vocal and instrumental performances.
While their recorded music is on the softer side of the spectrum, their catchy rhythms booming through big bassy speakers makes their live performances impossible not to dance to, adding a whole new dimension to their music. Many of their beautifully crafted songs have parts emphasising certain instruments, allowing each of the band members to come forward and have their moment, keeping the show dynamic and fresh throughout.

Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie performs at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Friday. Photo by Shawn Robbins
Songwriter Ben Gibbard had a good year in 2003. His rock band Death Cab for Cutie, which had been growing in popularity since the late 1990s, experienced a commercial breakthrough with the album “Transatlanticism.” He also created an electronic-pop album with producer Jimmy Tamborello under the name The Postal Service – and that album, “Give Up,” became a surprise hit. On the 20th anniversary of that milestone year, he took both acts on the road to play each album in full, stopping in Portland for a sold-out performance at the Cross Insurance Arena on Friday.
On some level, it’s a bit surreal to witness these songs in an arena. Gibbard benefited greatly from the file-sharing boom of the early 2000s, as young people everywhere found his work on Napster or Limewire and found it ideal for bedroom or dorm-room listening. There is an intimacy to his singing, making it sound like he’s quietly confessing secrets even when he is screaming. The Postal Service was even created through such intimacy, with Gibbard and Tamborello mailing the tracks back and forth and adding components with each send-off. For millennials of a certain age, the anniversary concert may have felt both nostalgic and like a reunion with the music, now grown up and on a bigger stage.
Both bands leaned into the environment. Death Cab for Cutie turned up the explosive riffs on songs like the opener “The New Year” and pummelled the climax of the album’s penultimate track, “We Looked Like Giants.” The Postal Service ramped up the rhythm section, transforming what on the album are intricate and low-key beats into grandiose rave-ups, with Gibbard frequently hopping behind a drum kit to pile another rhythm on top of the mix.
While Transatlanticism boasts some of the sharpest writing of Gibbard’s career, even he knew that The Postal Service was the night’s main attraction, due both to the latter’s immense popularity and the rarity of those songs being taken on the road. It’s possible that this tour is the first time that a long-running rock band has ever served as an opening act for its own one-off side project, but after Death Cab for Cutie played their set, adorned in all-black clothing, the Postal Service took the stage dressed all in white.
Due to the full album presentation, the concert occasionally felt at odds with the proper ebbs and flows of setlist construction. For example, “Such Great Heights,” by far the most well-known song of the evening, was slotted second in the Postal Service set, in keeping with the album. (Gibbard did reprise it with an acoustic, country rendition in the encore). Other Postal Service songs, such as “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” and “We Will Become Silhouettes” were sterling; the pairing of introspective emo lyrics with extroverted accompaniment highlighted the group’s charm. Jenny Lewis, a rock star in her own right, provided admirable multi-instrumental and vocal support, coming to center stage for the duet “Nothing Better” to massive applause.
Taking both bands together, the evening was a testament to Gibbard’s solid songwriting, which can fit the contours of many styles of music, from gentle crooning to driving rock to dance pop. The uniform presentation even exposed the folly of such genre constructs in general. As if to prove this point, both bands took the stage together to send the crowd home with a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence.” The choice of cover seemed deliberate and pointed – decades ago, Depeche Mode reshaped music by playing rock songs with electronic instruments and adding guitars to synth-pop. On this anniversary of Gibbard’s two career-changing albums, he showed us this map, and where it took him.

And the celebration will continue with more shows in 2024.

Ticket presales begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, and fans can sign up for access at giveuptransatlanticismtour.com . Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Dec. 8. Prices have yet to be announced.
Released in February 2003, "Give Up" marked the debut and only studio effort to date of The Postal Service, an indie pop supergroup formed by Gibbard and musicians Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis. The indietronica album, which went on to sell 1 million copies , peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart and spent a total of 111 weeks on the roster.
Death Cab for Cutie's fourth album "Tranatlanticism," released in October 2003, signaled a mainstream breakthrough for the indie rock band. The album, which earned the group its first entry on the Billboard 200 chart , helped the band sign a major-label deal with Atlantic Records in 2005 . Some of its songs were also featured on the popular teen drama "The O.C."

The 20 year anniversary tour for Transatlanticism/Give up is going around and Death Cab is playing first with Postal Service closing out the shows. I think some people are making assumptions based on that, but to me it's more about how infrequently The Postal Service tours. I saw the show when they played Seattle and it was amazing.
