“I'd been itching to record an opus--basically a long, winding, bastard of a song, reminiscent of some of the compositions I cut my teeth (or ears) on, in my music-hungry adolescence,” bassist Les Claypool told Consequence. “"Conspiranoia" was sprouted from a seed I had planted in my notebook a year or so ago--a few lines commenting on the mental state of the contemporary world.”

PRIMUS has also announced a limited run of additional headlining tour dates for the summer, including stops in Asheville, North Carolina; Memphis, Tennessee; and Austin, Texas.

General on-sale will begin this Friday, February 23 at 10 a.m. local time.

Fans can elevate their night out with PRIMUS as an official VIP this summer. The Fat Bastard and Lucky Bastard VIP Experiences include a show ticket, early entry into the venue, an invitation to the exclusive pre-show question-and-answer session with the band, and a signed VIP tour poster. The latest tour announcement follows a busy few years for PRIMUS , including the release of the "Conspiranoid" EP, their first new music in over five years. The band also completed their extensive "A Tribute To Kings" tour across North America, where they performed RUSH 's "A Farewell To Kings" in its entirety, alongside a set of their own music, to sold-out crowds. Most recently, Claypool toured the country with the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE for the first time in more than 20 years, performing PINK FLOYD 's "Animals" in its entirety, as well as other rarities. Claypool also delved into his solo legacy with the release of the "Adverse Yaw: The Prawn Song Years" box set, featuring remastered audio from his notable projects, including the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE and COLONEL CLAYPOOL'S BUCKET OF BERNIE BRAINS .

"The music of PRIMUS has had a creative influence on me and it is a huge honor to get to share the stage with them," says COHEED AND CAMBRIA frontman Claudio Sanchez .

Sanchez also announced today that his latest comic book series from the acclaimed "The Amory Wars" saga, "No World For Tomorrow" (from Boom! Studios ) has set a release date. Issue No. 1 hits comic shops on May 8, 2024.

Primus (originally formed in 1984), is an American rock band - currently made up of Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim Alexander.

Their style of music has been hard to pin point. Claypool said they were in the funk metal genre, but many people have described their music as alternative/ experimental rock and alternative metal.

The duo - Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, originally found it hard to get a drummer when they started out, eventually finding a friend of Claypool's to fill the spot. They went on to rise to stardom in their local music scene with their funk metal fusion.

After members coming and going from the band, the group decided to have a short break in 1989, but shortly after the trio got together and recorded their first album called "Suck On This". This lead to the subsequent release of their album "Frizzle Fry" and a tour with Jane's Addiction.

The group released "Pork Soda", which made number 7 in the Billboard Top 10 in 1993. The album had gone darker than their usual style of music, which included elements of suicide and murder. Following this, the band went on to headline at the Lollapalooza rock festival. Whilst playing their song "My Name Is Mud" the audience actually threw mud at them, which ended with a lot of anger from Claypool.

In 1999 the group released "Antipop", which included many big names such as Meallica, Rage Against the Machine and many more. From that album the group released a music video for the album's single called "Lacquer Head", which was banned from MTV because of references to drugs.

Primus went on to tour up and throughout 2011, including the Bonnaroo festival, shortly after followed by a Europe tour, before embarking on a "major fall tour" to support their new album. And the next year the band went on tour with their first ever 3D-enhanced live musical performance. Each show featured Quad Surround Sound and 3D visuals to make it a different experience for their fans.

Live reviews

Every now and then, you come across a band that genuinely stand alone as a real musical one-off; as a genre, though, metal seems to have more than its fair share. Primus fit pretty neatly into that particular category; their weird blend of heavy instrumentation, funk-driven song structures and progressive, expansive leanings makes them a genuinely intriguing proposition. Not to mention, too, that they do it all with their own quirky sense of humour running through proceedings; classic records by the band bear titles including Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda. After an initial split back in 2000 - because “it just wasn’t fun anymore”, according to singer Les Claypool - they reconvened in 2003 and continue to tour to this day, playing shows that are equal parts eccentric silliness and technical proficiency. Their most recent tour of the UK, saw career-spanning sets that included classics like ‘Jerry Was a Race Car Driver’ and ‘Frizzle Fry’ and typically ended with a bombastic, extended rendition of ‘John the Fisherman’. With drummer Tim Alexander returning to the fold late last year after a seventeen-year absence, there’s rumours that Primus may head to the studio later this year, meaning further touring plans shouldn’t be too far around the corner.

They're still killing it. Played a nice variety of their hits, with perhaps a bit more focus on Frizzle Fry than on other albums, just three songs from post-Brown album, including one from their upcoming album. Was stoked to see them play Over the Falls... Les fucked up on Southbound Pachyderm and stopped, then threw in Mr. Knowitall as penance before resuming Southbound Pachyderm to finish out the encore. Hell of a show...

Les was interactive and chatty as always. This was the third time I'd seen them and it was just as good as the first, which was rad. Primus rules and I will see them again whenever I can.

The concert was nice overall - great venue, amazing set list, good interaction with the public. The second half was the Chocolate Factory album, which you may or may not like but was impressive.

Quite disappointing though was the fact that despite a very, VERY cheery audience who called the band for more than 15 minutes, Primus didn't come back from an encore. I was personally very disappointed by this, as it's kind of a tradition in live events - especially which such a loud crowd! It was a sad ending for an otherwise perfect gig.

Furism’s profile image

It was good. Lots of my favorite old songs. On the pork soda album. Also I was impressed with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory psychedelic stuff. And a two parter with an intermission and I got a frizzle fry tee shirt. And I got my girlfriend a purple Charlie tee shirt. 1 thing, the Orpheum is really nice with reserved seating. And we had to stand the whole time to see because everyone else was standing. I like to rock out but I also like to sit down. Great show overall, great musicians

griffballs’s profile image

This probably replaced several other shows as my favorite. Claypool's humor and irreverent nature with the audience was fantastic. The band managed to play many of their classics and a few surprises thrown in as well. This being the Chocolate Factory, they eventually centered the show around it and hilarity ensued. With Claypool sauntering on stage as Willy Wonka amidst mushrooms and Oompa Loompas, Primus managed to trip everyone out.

Limbsydept’s profile image

Best concert ever!!! They played for allmost 3 hours. And they played all their old songs. The sound was perfect, the crowd was perfect, overall best night ever. Less claypool and his band rockend the crowd. I like their old hits kuch more than the experimental things less claypool tried the last couple of years. Primus played so good everybody was going out of their minds. Thanks for a great concert Guy's!

claudia-wijdeven’s profile image

What can I say, it was Primus, it was awesome, it was everything you'd expect.

They jammed like no one's business, again what I would have expected even though I've never seen them before.

One good thing is they only played one of the Oompaloompa songs off the last album (which are the only decent songs IMHO).

One bad thing is that they didn't play "My Name is Mud" AT ALL! boooooo.

gfilicetti’s profile image

The atmosphere was really something else, like being on drugs but not really. It was a trip, all right. About midways through the concert they left the stage, and four POPEYE-cartoons played on a monitor for about 20 minutes. Some people got slightly irritated but I liked it. It was a nice break from the music and it really fits with Primus' antics.

Definitely worth going to!

edvard-lovold-gaukst’s profile image

That was an awesome NYE show. Aside from the 60 foot sperm whale hanging overhead, and the fact that the Fox is a gorgeous theater, the second set had Herb Alexander fresh from heart surgery and Tool's Danny Carey doubling up on the drums with an epic 2 kit drum solo. They rang in the new year with a pretty epic Van Halen Hot for Teacher cover.

Primus Announce 2022 Tour Dates Featuring Rush ‘A Farewell to Kings’

Primus has confirmed that they’ll be continuing on with their Tribute to Kings tour deep into next year with 46 new shows just announced!

The band spent much of their 2021 touring on the new concept that they’d do a set of Primus originals followed by a full rendition of the Rush album, A Farewell to Kings . I got to see the show they did in Berkeley and it blew me away.

Primus Announce Extensive A Tribute To Kings Tour, Pay Tribute to Rush

Primus Announce Extensive A Tribute To Kings Tour, Pay Tribute to Rush

Primus have announced an extensive 46-date coast-to-coast extension of their popular A Tribute To Kings Tour as a homage to prog-rock legends, Rush, beginning Apr. 15 at The Criterion in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The tour will feature the Bay area trio performing Rush’s 1977 LP A Farewell To Kings in its entirety, following a set of the band’s own music.

The announcement follows the massive success of the first leg of A Tribute To Kings Tour, which was long delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the latest Rush-related milestone for Primus, who first opened for their musical heroes in 1992.

The forthcoming tour will feature Primus’ first stops in Canada, beginning with two nights at Toronto’s Massey Hall, May 13 and 14.

On the road, the band will be joined by experimental rock group Battles, Canadian psych-rock band Black Mountain and Austin’s own The Black Angels for select stops. See tour dates below.

Pre-sale, including VIP upgrade options, are on sale now .

Tickets go on sale to the general public Fri., Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. local time.

About Primus

“Tommy the Cat.” “John the Fisherman.” “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver.” “My Name is Mud.” “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver.” Yessiree, Primus is responsible for some of the most cutting edge and original rock music of the 1990’s. And now, the definitive Primus line-up – singer/bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Tim Alexander – is back together and planning on getting the worldwide masses bobbing up and down in unison once more.

Although originally formed in 1984, it was not until shortly before the end of the decade that the aforementioned classic line-up was solidified. With most hard rock/heavy metal acts at the time either neatly falling into either “thrash” or “glam” categories, Primus joined a variety of underground bands that refused to be pigeonholed (and by the early ’90s, had fully infiltrated the mainstream) – merging metal, funk, alternative, punk, country, roots rock, and experimental music, along with Claypool’s penchant for witty and often humorous storytelling lyrics.

Building a large and loyal following first in and around San Francisco (before eventually, going global), Primus kicked things off with a string of releases that are now considered classic alt-rock titles – 1989’s ‘Suck on This,’ 1990’s ‘Frizzle Fry,’ 1991’s ‘Sailing the Seas of Cheese,’ 1993’s ‘Pork Soda,’ and 1995’s ‘Tales from the Punchbowl.’ Along the way, Primus toured with some of rock’s biggest names (Jane’s Addiction, Public Enemy, Rush, U2, etc.), headlined the third-ever Lollapalooza Festival, and issued a variety of crafty music videos, which stood out in sharp contrast to the ultra-seriousness of most other video clips at the time.

Alexander exited Primus in 1996, but returned in 2003, in time for an EP/DVD set, ‘Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People,’ and a sold out reunion tour, that lasted over the next few years, before the drummer departed once more. But as Claypool got to work on putting together a forthcoming book about the band’s history, Les began longing for the days of when Alexander’s unmistakable and powerful drumming provided the beat. A phone call was placed, a conversation ensued, and before you could say, “Here come the bastards,” the Claypool-LaLonde-Alexander line-up was back in business. Plans to tour the world over and offering up new music are already in place. Be forewarned…here they come!

Primus Plot Rescheduled Rush Tribute Tour Dates

By Kory Grow

Primus will mount their long-delayed tour in homage to Rush , A Tribute to Kings , this summer. The band postponed the dates last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The trek, which will see Primus performing Rush’s 1977 album A Farewell to Kings in its entirety as well as some of their own music, will now kick-off August 10th in Boise, Idaho , before wrapping in Phoenix, Arizona, in October. Wolfmother will open all of the dates, and the Sword will join in on the festivities at some of them. Tickets are available now at Ticketmaster.com .

“Finally, the clouds are parting, the planets are aligning, the dough is rising … whatever metaphor floats your preverbal boat, Primus is going on tour again,” frontman Les Claypool said in a statement. “We were poised and ready for a massive, bent-rock extravaganza when the gremlins of Covid came and yanked the rug out from under us all. I personally have been climbing the walls like a shit-house rat and, after my first season off in 30-some-odd years, I’m very anxious and excited to stand in front of the microphone with my four-string piece of furniture and belt out some girthy ditties to sweaty throngs of punters.”

A statement from the band reinforced that it would follow local guidelines, regarding pandemic precautions. All original tickets will be honored, although anyone looking for a refund can seek one at their point of purchase over the next 30 days. Refunds to the band’s previously scheduled Toronto, Lafayette, and Minneapolis dates — which the band was not able to rebook — are also available at point of purchase.

Last year, before lockdown, Claypool told Rolling Stone how important it was for him to pay tribute to a band that gave him so much inspiration over the years. He sought Geddy Lee’s blessing before mounting the tour. “I texted with him — I keep in touch with Geddy — just to make sure we weren’t trodding on something weird,” he said. “So I checked in with him to see what he thought of it, and he was excited about the notion.”

'That is how you turn 60': Maynard James Keenan, Primus and Puscifer go hard in Phoenix

primus us tour

Maynard James Keenan was nearing the end of a freewheeling stop on his 60th birthday tour, Sessanta , basking in the afterglow of “Southbound Pachyderm” as performed by a sprawling collective of extremely talented musicians from A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus, when he told the crowd, “And that, mother (expletives), is how you turn 60.”

He was technically still 59 at that point. He turns 60 on Wednesday, April 17, when he returns to that same stage with those same friends at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, just down the hill from his home in Jerome, Arizona .

But it’s doubtful many people have embraced the thought of turning 60 with a more inspired blend of self-effacing humor, undeniable vitality and unabashed artistry than Keenan.

Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta was as untraditional as promised

The night was every bit as untraditional as promised, played out on a two-tiered stage with sofas and three drum kits on the upper level and a chairlift to transport musicians from one level to another, not because they’re too old to climb the stairs but because it added to the entertainment value of the night.

And that goes double for the people playing ping-pong during “Bullet Train to Iowa” and Keenan and Carina Round of Puscifer squeezing a game of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots into Puscifer’s “The Remedy,” which features some of Keenan’s greatest lyrics (“Yes, we’re being condescending/ Yes, that means we’re talking down to you”).

The premise of this tour is that the members of A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus will not only share a stage but share musicians as the night unfolds, resulting in some truly awe-inspiring feats of musical cross-pollination.

Having multiple drummers definitely added layers of intensity to the proceedings. You never knew when Les Claypool of Primus would show up in another goofy mask to join one of the other bands on bass. And Keenan gamely guested on lead vocals on Primus’ “Tommy the Cat.”

It felt like crashing a really cool party at a rock star’s house and watching the musicians let their hair down, except for one thing. You could tell they put some thought and effort into making sure it sounded right.

It was all about musicianship and friendship and the magic of collaboration.

How Keenan's Sessanta played out on the eve of his 60th birthday

The concert began with a video of Keenan in a Spam commercial driving home the zero-camera policy by warning fans that if you chose to disobey this policy, you would be asked to leave, at which point you would find yourself fed through an oversized meat grinder outside the concert, thereby becoming the secret ingredient that makes Spam such a culinary favorite of “cannibalistic cultures.”

As threats go, it was pretty entertaining.

Each band took a turn in the spotlight, starting with A Perfect Circle, who followed Keenan’s PSA with a haunting rendition of “The Package.”

At the song’s conclusion, Keenan took a moment welcome the crowd to his birthday show with “Let’s confirm what we already know… Arizona.”

The audience cheered, but not enough to satisfy him.

“Sounds like California,” he scoffed, an insult met with boos. “Let’s fix it. Arizona!"

Maynard James Keenan weighs in on Arizona's return to 1864

That did the trick. Then, Keenan took a moment to address the local news.

“OK, so I’ve been out of town for about three weeks, out of state,” he said. “ Anything change that I should know about ? I dunno, like 1864 ? Jesus (expletive) Christ, people. Here’s my short speech, then I’ll (expletive) off. Register to (expletive) vote, please.”

Then it was back to the music with “Disillusioned.”

Each band did a three- to four-song set before rotating through the lineup two more times while changing up the order.

After bringing it all to a head with “Southbound Pachyderm” and telling the crowd this is how you turn 60, Keenan said, “I have been blessed with the privilege of working with some of the best musicians on the (expletive) planet… For my birthday, I got three new songs.”

And with that, the three bands dusted off the three songs featured on “Sessanta E.P.P.P”: A Perfect Circle’s “Kindred,” Puscifer’s “No Angel” and the Primus song “Pablo’s Hippies.”

Keenan closed his birthday celebration 'witnessing the majesty'

As the Primus song ended, Keenan joked, “Holy (expletive), you’re still here?”

Then, he brought the concert to a suitably majestic close with Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” singing “Witnessing the majesty.”

He’s referring, of course, to the majesty of the Grand Canyon. But it certainly applied to what we’d all just witnessed in the course of that performance.

Sessanta returns to Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Keenan’s birthday — Wednesday, April 17.

A PERFECT CIRCLE, PRIMUS, PUSCIFER expand 2024 Sessanta tour

A Perfect Circle travis shinn 2018 , Travis Shinn

Maynard James Keenan 's 60th birthday tour just got even more badass. Last month, the TOOL frontman announced that his two other bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer , would be joining forces with funk-metal greats Primus  for an untraditional tour that will see all three bands share the stage at the same time.

Dubbed Sessanta , the 2024 trek is a callback to Keenan's 50th birthday celebration, Cinquanta, which was supposed to be a one-off collaboration between APC, Puscifer and Primus in Los Angeles.

Initially, Sessanta was limited to just seven West Coast shows next April, but now Keenan and Co. have tacked on five more gigs that expand the journey out to the Southeast.

Now, before the West Coast leg kicks off April 17th, the trio of bands will be playing in Raleigh, North Carolina, on April 7th, and then following that with shows in Georgia, Tennessee and Texas before trekking out to Arizona.

"Although I am slowly going deaf with all the rock song touring, and the aging and what not, the thunderous cacophony of whining and crying from the places we aren't playing Sessanta was heard loud and clear," Keenan shared in a hilarious statement.

"But instead of being a grumpy old fart and calling you all a Waahhhmnulance, we decided to book a few more shows. Thank you @poopoopeepee69, @blunthole420 and many others for changing our minds. U.S. only, though. I gotta be in bed by 7:30."

Tickets for the new Southeastern dates go on sale Friday October 6th. See all of the Sessanta shows below.
