‘Good for the game’: Copper Rock welcomes women’s golf legends to historic LPGA Senior Championship

CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Southern Utah’s golf landscape is about to evolve in a major way with the arrival of the fourth annual Copper Rock Championship and Utah’s first-ever LPGA Senior Championship in back-to-back weeks. And it’s all happening next month at Copper Rock Golf Course in Hurricane.

“It’s two weeks of professional women’s golf at the highest level, and you get to see it all right here in Southern Utah,” event coordinator Penny James-Garcia said. “It’s a double-header of events not to be missed by anyone who is a fan of golf, because these ladies are the past, present and future stars of the LPGA.”

The Copper Rock Championship , a sanctioned event on the LPGA’s developmental Epson Tour, is set for May 16-18, followed immediately by the LPGA Senior Championship on May 23-25. While the Copper Rock Championship highlights ambitious young golfers chasing their dream of earning LPGA membership, the LPGA Senior Championship will showcase the enduring talents of legends of the game. An international field of approximately 75 players will compete for their share of a $400,000 purse, with $60,000 going to the winner.

The draw is led by Angela Stanford, winner of the 2023 LPGA Senior Championship and two other titles on the Legends tour. Stanford launched her career on the Epson Tour (then known as the LPGA Futures Tour) back in 2000, winning the season-ending event to earn LPGA membership. She has played on six Solheim Cup teams and holds seven LPGA titles, including one major at the 2018 Evian Championship.

“The LPGA has done a great job of growing the game, and I hope people come out and watch,” Stanford said. “Anytime you can showcase women’s golf, either amateur or professional, and you have women and girls who want to come out and watch, that’s good for the game.”

Southern Utah golf fans will also have the opportunity to watch trailblazing champions like Laura Davies, the first woman to win on all three major tours (the LPGA, the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA of Japan Tour) in the same season. In 1994, Davies became the first golfer, male or female, to win on five different golf tours in the same year. She holds 87 titles, including four majors, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015.

Prior to finding success on the Legends tour, including winning the 2022 U.S. Senior Women’s Open, Jill McGill etched her name in history as the 1993 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1994 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champion. She joins Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, JoAnne Carner and Carol Semple Thompson as the only players to win three different USGA championships.

Juli Inkster, a name synonymous with golf greatness, has also committed to play at Copper Rock. A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Inkster has seven majors and 31 LPGA titles as well as the most Solheim Cup match wins of any American. She’s the only golfer in LPGA history to win multiple majors in three consecutive decades.

Cristie Kerr, who recently became eligible to join the Legends tour, will be making her first appearance in an LPGA Senior Championship. Kerr has won 20 LPGA titles, including two majors, and played on nine Solheim Cup teams.

Other notable names in this year’s field include Hollis Stacy, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame who holds 18 LPGA titles, including four majors, and Sherri Steinhauer, who has won multiple majors on both the LPGA and the Ladies European Tour.

Copper Rock will host a qualifying tournament on May 20, with the top two professionals and the top amateur receiving entry into the LPGA Senior Championship later that week. Nuny Kham-One Khamken, the 2023 Utah State Women’s Senior Amateur Championship winner, will also be eligible to play through a sponsor exemption.

Additionally, Utah’s current first lady Abby Cox and former first lady Jeanette Herbert will be playing in the senior championship pro-am during tournament week, and Cox will address the guests of the pro-am luncheon following the event.

“This is a big deal,” James-Garcia said. “Having this championship here is something recognized at the highest levels of our state, and we’re amazingly honored to welcome our first ladies.”

The LPGA Senior Championship is one of two major tournaments organized annually by Legends of the LPGA, the official senior tour of the LPGA. Legends of the LPGA was established in 2000 to provide competitive opportunities for LPGA Tour professionals and eligible amateurs ages 45 and over. The tour’s membership, which includes 15 LPGA Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame members, have collectively earned over 750 LPGA Tour victories, including 84 majors. 

“This is the first major golf event of any tour played in Utah,” James-Garcia said. “Spread the word, and let’s show these ladies that Utah loves women’s golf!”

As a proud member of the local community, the Copper Rock Championship is committed to making a lasting impact on Southern Utah. This year, they’re asking golf fans to help them give back by participating in Birdies Fore Charity, a fundraising initiative that benefits Hurricane City’s future Veterans Memorial Park and the Dove Center, a nonprofit organization aiding survivors of domestic violence.

Who’s teeing off at Myrtle Beach’s first PGA Tour golf tournament? Here’s what we know

At 7 a.m. May 9, 2024, one golfer will make history.

They’ll stride up to the champions’ tee box at the first hole at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, look out at the course before them, and visualize their first swing.

Course Head Golf Professional Dennis Nicholl advised that one golfer use a driver or a three-wood. Regardless of which club they pick, that golfer will be the first to hit a golf ball in the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic— the Grand Strand’s first PGA Tour tournament.

The question becomes who it will be and when the tournament competitors will be determined.

Myrtle Beach Classic Tournament Director Darren Nelson said the tournament field will be finalized May 3, 2024, at 5 p.m. EST. While the tournament will feature PGA golfers, attendees shouldn’t expect the Scottie Scheffler or Collin Morikawa’s of the tour to partake in the Grand Strand’s first PGA Tour Tournament.

The Wells Fargo Championship, a PGA signature event with a $20 million event purse held May 6-12, 2024, will occur at the same time as the Myrtle Beach Classic.

Nelson said in March 2024 that the Myrtle Beach Classic will feature golfers who finished outside of the final top 50 of the PGA Tour’s fall 2023 FedEx Cup rankings. This means the likes of Scheffler and Morikawa aren’t eligible for the Myrtle Beach Classic.

Bryson DeChambeau misses a putt, then gives away his dirty socks

Golf but . . . smellier? 

During a raucous week Down Under, fans at LIV Golf Adelaide have come away with all kinds of souvenirs, some more odiferous than others. 

Signed balls and gloves. Autographed programs, caps, flags…

And Bryson DeChambeau’s dirty socks.

It happened on Saturday, at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, where DeChambeau found himself in an exuberant exchange with rowdy spectators around the putting green.

During the noisy back-and-forth, fitting for a circuit that bills itself as “golf but louder,” a challenge was laid down: DeChambeau would have to drain a mid-range putt, or part with a certain article of clothing.

With a crowd chanting behind him, DeChambeau put a nice stroke on the ball, but his bid slid past the cup on the left.

Bryson DeChambeau removes Masters signage en route to wild birdie

Honoring the terms of the challenge, DeChambeau removed his shoes and then his low-cut socks, which he sniffed while nodding in approval at their scent, before handing them over to an apparently well-served fan, who seemed delighted with his, um, win?

“And there goes my socks,” DeChambeau posted afterward on social media. “Enjoy them. I guess . . .”

The playful interaction was part of a lively second round of an event that is quickly emerging as the LIV equivalent of the famously party-hardy WM Phoenix Open. Earlier in the day, on the 12th hole at Grange GC, a par-3 known as the “watering hole” due its loud music and boozy fans, the caddie for Australian pro Lucas Herbert was struck in the back of the head by a water bottle after Hubert drained a birdie putt. 

The caddie, Nick Pugh, dropped to his knees, a sobering moment for all on hand, though Herbert reported later that Pugh was doing well.

The fan who wound up with DeChambeau’s socks should be okay as well, provided he doesn’t inhale too deeply.

LPGA TOUR: JM EAGLE LA CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2024 LPGA Tour season continues this week with the second playing of the JM Eagle LA Championship at Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif. It features a 144-player field competing for a purse of $3.75 million, one of the largest prize funds for a non-major on the LPGA Tour. Hannah Green is defending champion after defeating Aditi Ashok and Xiyu Lin in a three-way playoff last year.

Simmons Bank Championship to debut on PGA TOUR Champions in 2024

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. and PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A new PGA TOUR Champions tournament, the Simmons Bank Championship will debut in October 2024. The competition will be held annually at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas. A five-year agreement establishing the event was announced Thursday at the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, with Simmons First National Corporation Executive Chairman George Makris, PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady and Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders in attendance.

“The best job I have as Governor is to be the chief salesperson for Arkansas. This Tour is just one more thing to give our state an advantage,” said Governor Sanders. “We want to grow our outdoor economy and events like this that have a $15 million impact are exactly the type of thing that we’re looking to bring and highlight here.”

The Simmons Bank Championship will serve as the second round of PGA TOUR Champions’ annual Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, with the top 54 players in the Charles Schwab Cup standings competing to earn their spot among the top 36 and gain entry into the final event of the season. The inaugural Simmons Bank Championship will be held from October 21-27, 2024.

Simmons Bank was founded in 1903 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Today, Simmons has approximately $28.0 billion in assets and employs almost 3,100 associates across six states. Since 2020, Simmons Bank has served as the title sponsor of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Nashville event, the Simmons Bank Open for the Snedeker Foundation.

The Simmons Bank Championship will be the first PGA TOUR Champions event held in Arkansas, and the first PGA TOUR-sanctioned tournament held in the state since the Korn Ferry Tour’s Fort Smith Classic, which was last contested in 2010. In markets where PGA TOUR Champions events are held, tournaments generate upwards of $15 million dollars in local economic impact. Net proceeds from the Simmons Bank Championship will benefit several qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in the state of Arkansas. To date, tournaments across all Tours have generated more than $3.64 billion in charitable donations.

Pleasant Valley Country Club was designed in the late 1960s by world-renowned architect Joe Finger. He brought on future World Golf Hall of Fame members Jimmy Demaret and Byron Nelson to serve as consultants. Demaraet won 31 times on the PGA TOUR, including three victories at The Masters, while Nelson holds 52 victories, including five major titles.

A 27-hole golf course, Pleasant Valley features oak and pine tree lined fairways, eight ponds on the property and primary turfgrass of 419 bermudagrass. In 2009 all the putting surfaces were changed to ultra-dwarf bermudagrass. In addition to the course, the Country Club features a 40,000 square-foot hitting area, as well as 10,000 and 4,500 square-foot practice putting greens.

PGA TOUR Champions features several players with Arkansas ties. John Daly – a current resident of Dardanelle, Arkansas – won the 1984 Arkansas State Amateur and played collegiately at the University of Arkansas. Glen Day is a current resident of Little Rock and has served as Simmons Bank ambassador since 2021. Ken Duke – also sponsored by Simmons Bank – was born and raised in Arkansas, winning the Arkansas High School Medalist at Pleasant Valley Country Club in 1987. He also played collegiately at Henderson University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he was a four-time Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference Golfer of the Year and earned NAIA All-American honors in 1992. Both Daly (Class of 2006) and Duke (Class of 2014) are members of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

The Simmons Bank Championship will be managed and operated by Pro Links Sports, a nationally recognized sports marketing and event management firm that assists in running several PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions tournaments. Executive Director Ken Kennerly and Tournament Director Mike Harrison will oversee the event, working closely with Simmons Bank, Pleasant Valley Country Club, and the PGA TOUR Champions to host a world-class event for the Little Rock community and the great state of Arkansas.

It wasn’t a big-money signature event like this week’s RBC Heritage was but, there was still $4 million on the line at the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship, with $720,000 going to the winner.

And the winner was Billy Horschel , who now has eight wins in his PGA Tour career. The second opposite-field event also had 300 FedEx Cup points on the line for the victor.

Horschel goes over the $36 million mark in career earnings in his 333rd start.

Wesley Bryan pocketed $436,00 for his solo second. Kevin Tway banked $276,000 for his solo third.

H annah Green repeated her 2023 triumph and won the JM Eagle LA Championship with a 12-under score. Green claimed her fifth career LPGA Tour title and also the lion's share of the $3,000,000 purse.
