What our guests say about this tour

"fun and educational".

Hanneke guided us through in a sequential way so as we learned about the paintings we also learned about Van Gogh’s life journey. My oldest daughter said this was one of the favorite things we did in Amsterdam.

"Our favorite museum guide"

Paola provided our family with an amazing tour of the Van Gogh Museum. She is an art historian and is incredibly knowledgeable about Vincent Van Gogh’s life and work. Her passion for Van Gogh infused us all — even those who were not particularly interested in Van Gogh at the beginning!

Life and works of a misunderstood genius

Vincent van Gogh is one of the most iconic painters of all times, and a pioneer of modern art. The entire Van Gogh Museum is dedicated to his life and work. It houses a unique collection of his paintings, including the world famous Sunflowers and the Potato Eaters , along with his drawings, letters and personal items.

In this two-hours tour, we survey the highlights of the collection: various self-portraits, Potato Eaters , Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles , Almond Blossoms , Wheat Field with Crows , and other important works.

The Van Gogh Museum also displays paintings by other artists of Vincent’s circle. Van Gogh’s style changed dramatically over the course of his short career, especially during the time he spent in Paris. The artworks of his friends, mentors, or competitors offer an insight into his artistic evolution.

We’ll see what van Gogh learned from Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and other French artists – realists, impressionists and post-impressionists. Furthermore, we will examine how van Gogh inspired the following generations of painters. His sensitivity to colors and expressive brushwork anticipated most of the 20 th  century art.

Van Gogh’s life story unfolds as we look at his paintings. “I am what my work is,” he wrote once. Many people are only familiar with his tragic life story: poverty, insanity, a cut-off ear. We’ll debunk the common myths around his name. There is more to van Gogh than a tortured mad genius. He was a loving son and brother, a voracious reader, an artist with a tremendous visual culture, a deeply religious person.

All in all, we’ll figure out together what van Gogh’s life was, and what his legacy is.

Follow Vincent’s artistic evolution

The tour takes you through Vincent’s entire career. We survey his early works in the Netherlands and his later paintings in France. In Paris, he painted impressionist landscapes and portraits. His works from Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise reflect his post-impressionist evolution.

How did a mediocre craftsman turn into a pioneer of bold self-expression? Van Gogh’s artistic journey is unique. He learned to draw from handbooks. As a self-taught artist, he worked hard to master his brush.  On this tour, we look at the experiments that nurtured this transformation. We discuss Vincent’s science of colors, examine his innovative techniques and talk about his struggle to develop a distinctive style.

Van Gogh’s life and legacy

“Artworks of flesh and blood.”  These words of Emile Zola, van Gogh’s favorite writer, could apply to Vincent’s own paintings.

Van Gogh’s artistic career was very short – only 10 years. His legend as a tortured artist often overshadows his work. During this tour, we explore the background of his iconic and lesser-known masterpieces.  Vincent’s family relationships, job failures, faith, and love life help understand his artistic quest. We reconstruct his journey beyond the sensational highlights: mental illness, self-mutilation, and suicide.

Why is Van Gogh considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt? We will see how his work built on the legacy of old masters, while he also continued the experiments of the  19 th  century  artists. Yet van Gogh is unlike anything that came before him.  Vincent’s work had a profound impact on the European art throughout the 20 th  century. He continues to fascinate people today. He shaped our very idea of art.

The world’s largest collection of Vincent’s works

The Van Gogh museum holds an outstanding collection of Vincent’s works. It comprises about 200 paintings and more than 500 drawings. It also boasts a rich collection of letters and artefacts. It is a visual account of his entire life, from his childhood to his premature death.

The museum was founded by van Gogh’s nephew, Vincent Willem, the son of Theo van Gogh. Vincent’s iconic painting Almond Blossom was a present to him as a newborn.

The Van Gogh Museum tour is led by a professional art historian guide. This intimate, conversational experience helps you build a meaningful connection to the artist.

Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum Combined Tour

Short on time? Consider taking a combo tour of the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum . The two museums are located on Amsterdam’s Museum Square, within a short walk from each other. In 4 hours, you can see the best of both.

If you prefer to explore both museums more thoroughly, you can complete the Van Gogh Museum tour with a separate tour of the Rijksmuseum .

Experience Vincent’s days with a 19th century city stroll

Seeing art and hearing stories in a museum is one thing. Want to feel even more of the vibe of Vincent’s century? Then let’s combine the museum visit with a walk through Amsterdam. During this walk, we will focus of life and developments of the 19th century. A walk of 1,5-2 hours combines perfectly with a 1,5-2 hours museum visit. Both ways are possible: we could either first visit the museum and then go on a walking tour, or start with a walking tour and then dive into the Van Gogh museum.

Where is the meeting point? We will email you the meeting point and other details of the tour upon booking.

We are with more than 5 people. Can we still book this tour? With some tours we sometimes make exceptions regarding the amount of people in your group. However, the Van Gogh museum tends to get crowded an it’s not comfortable to go around with a larger group. In case you are with more than 5 people, you may always check with us whether we have more guides available.

Do you provide head sets? Some guides go through the museum with larger groups, using a whisper set. This is not our style. We value conversation as much as sharing knowledge. As we are strict with your group size for the Van Gogh museum, it will always be possible to actually talk about the art works and stories behind them.

Is Starry Night on display? This painting is part of the permanent collection of MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) in New York. Another Starry Night is on display at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Is the tour suitable for young children? This tour is suitable from the age of 12.

Is this tour suitable for people with reduced mobility? The Van Gogh Museum is well accessible for people with reduced mobility.

I have particular interests at the Van Gogh Museum. Can this tour be customized? We always adapt every tour to your wishes and interests. Please contact us , and we will be happy to come up with a customized solution for you.

Van Gogh Museum

We tell you about the controversial life of the author through the contemplation of his work.

Did you know that almost all his production, more than 900 paintings, is concentrated practically in the last 3 years of his life? What would it be that dragged the eccentric artist to this prolific production?

Our tour is about this obsession. We are doing it step by step, observing how he is progressing in his technique and who influenced his different stages. A tour full of curiosities and full of stories about the life and work of this genius.

Rijksmuseum

After resting a little, we continue our visit to the Rijksmuseum, the most important museum in the country and also the largest.

To make the most of our time, we will first visit the classical room, where we will talk about the most important painters of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Willem Claeszoon Heda, Jan Vermeer or Jan Steen.

With a realistic character, the intimate genre scenes reach all their splendor with these artists. Our task will be to analyze the distinctive value of each artist, the personal and technical contributions used while telling you the story behind each painting.

The visit will continue through other rooms, where we will continue discovering hidden treasures.

  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM

Listen, there are plenty of tours you can take through these two museums, but if you want one of the best in-depth options, we can’t recommend our first tour enough.

The Van Gogh Museum & Rijksmuseum: Timed Entrance & Guided Tour  will show you some of the world’s most renowned pieces of art, as well as the history behind them and the Netherlands throughout the years.

As these are some of the most popular museums in the country, you can expect a long line, which you’ll get to skip today.

Meet up with your guide, who knows all about the museums and will start things off with a backstory of the area. Go through an exciting history lesson on art in general, as well as Dutch civilization and how it changed over the centuries.

We appreciated how chronological everything was, making the content much easier to consume and build upon as you go through each exhibition. You’ll get to see the most famous artwork throughout the Dutch Golden age, from some of the most well-known artists from the 18th and 19th centuries.

However, you won’t just cruise by them – rather, your guide will give background to each, including the techniques used, their cultural significance, and more interesting facts. Should you have any questions about anything, your small group size makes it easy to ask your guide.

The only thing that we weren’t completely satisfied with, was that the special Rembrandt exhibition at the Rijksmuseum wasn’t included, however, you can usually purchase tickets separately.

While the first tour is one of the most popular, there are some guests who need something shorter due to a busy schedule. If that sounds like you, you’re sure to love the Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum Tour with Expert Guide !

Learn about some of the most respected collections on the planet while learning a lot, seeing a lot, and having tons of fun! Clocking in at 2 to 2.5 hours and with various start times available, you’ll be able to practically choose the exact time that you’d like to have your tour.

We have to mention that this is definitely a tour geared more towards first-time visitors rather than those who want to know every detail, offering a good overview of all that the 2 museums have to offer.

You’ll spend a good amount of time walking through the Dutch Golden Age, along with some of its most timeless pieces and collections by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh.

Holland has quite the interesting cultural and political background, which were greatly reflected in national artwork – learn about the history behind them all, as well as their significance.

As the tour is limited to a maximum of 10 adults, you’ll have time to explore around as you wish, and ask your guide any questions you may have. These major European art museums have to be seen to believed, and your guide will help give useful insight to the wonders they hold.

If you want to experience the Dutch Golden Age with an enthusiastic, expert guide, then this is certainly a fantastic option.

3.  Van Gogh Museum – Exclusive Guided Museum Tour (Reserved Entry Included!)

  • Departure Time:  10:00 AM, 1:30 PM
  • Includes:  Exclusive Guided Museum Tour (Reserved Entry Included!),Tour Guide Exclusively For You (Does NOT apply if you choose “SAVE! BOOK SEMI-PRIVATE” option), all entry fees

Just like the previous excursion, this tour is 2.5 hours full of venturing through the masterpiece-adorned halls of both iconic museums. The Van Gogh Museum – Exclusive Guided Museum Tour (Reserved Entry Included!)  gives you more perspective into Van Gogh’s turbulent life and unique artistry, while also illuminating Dutch culture and art.

However, you’ll feel like the VIP you are with the personalized commentary and private guide to tailor your tour to your specific interests.

Meet outside the Cobra Cafe, where you’ll meet your friendly guide right across from the Rijksmuseum, where you’ll kick off your exclusive tour. Skip the massive lines and cruise right into the museum, so you can spend all your time actually inside!

At the start, you’ll encounter some of the world’s most renowned pieces, such as ‘The Milkmaid’ by Vermeer, ‘Self-Portrait’ by Van Gogh, ‘The Merry Family’ by Jan Steen, and ‘Night Watch’ by Rembrandt.

Long story short, this museum is the Gold Standard of Dutch art, with a wide array of national treasures that can seem intimidating without your helpful guide to escort you in a specially-curated tour.

We recommend everyone spend some time in the Great Hall, which is really a piece of art, itself! Enormous wall paintings, beautiful stained glass windows of Dutch artists, and the incredible ceilings.

Then, you’ll get insight into the maestro that is Van Gogh, learning more about the way his mind worked and the struggles he dealt with. You’ll also learn about his development as an artist, working through his very different earlier pieces to his last paintings. For some serious inspiration, we find this tour to be perfect!

4. Amsterdam: Van Gogh Museum Tour including Entry Ticket

  • Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours
  • Includes:   Timed entrance,  Professional local tour guide,  Entrance fee,  Wheelchair tours only on request

Lasting around 2 to 2.5 hours, this crash course in the artist’s life, mind, and talent is a must while in the European capital! We found the guides for this tour to be some of the most knowledgeable and organized in the city, with excellent English skills and the ability to entertain a group.

Meet up with them and skip the line (which always seems to be there!) so you can head straight inside. The guides are great at answering questions and painting the artist’s story in a way that really makes sense and gives insight to his artwork.

Whether you already have a great appreciation for Van Gogh or are an absolute newbie, you’ll stay engaged and learn about his genius. The tour starts out with Van Gogh’s earliest work, which is notably darker than his later pieces, such as the vibrant French period and the paintings right before his death.

We also appreciated that their collection includes works by Gauguin, Monet, and other famous artists who were inspired by him.

Whether you’d like to come with a partner, with a group of friends, or the whole family, you need to consider this tour! It does have a cap of 8 participants, which means that you’ll get to see more, hear everything your guide says, and experience a tour with a personal touch.

You’d think that the guides knew Vincent, himself, as it seems like there’s pretty much nothing about the legendary artist that they don’t know!

As you could probably deduce from the name of the tour, you’ll get to skip the line here, too. I mean, we have the Dutch “Louvre” to see – we don’t have time for queuing!

Even if you don’t think you’re particularly interested in Dutch history over the centuries, trust us – you will be just as enthralled as the next person. Dutch culture is varied, rich, vibrant, and is perfectly captured in its period pieces from names like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.

You’ll learn all about the wide array of various paintings and artifacts totalling to over 8,000 pieces – not to mention, you can browse around the beautiful 19th-century library holding art of a different kind.

We really found the 17th-century dollhouses, ceramics, and globes to be intriguing, aside from the obvious masterpieces by the majors. This museum is quite massive, and can be intimidating, but with your guide you’ll be able to tackle it with grace and confidence!

You’ll learn more than you could imagine in these couple of hours, with the guide going off pure knowledge and their specific group rather than a cookie-cutter script. Their knowledge about art, art history, and the capital city altogether really amplified our experience and will ensure we return soon!

History of the Museums

Rijksmuseum – Founded in The Hague in 1798 and later moved to Amsterdam 10 years later, this national museum is dedicated specifically to Dutch art and history.

It took over a whopping 200 years to build the Rijksmuseum, and it wasn’t always as opulent as it is today. It had rather modest beginnings, and in the 17th-century, didn’t even hold paintings by Rembrandt, Steen, Vermeer, and other artists at the head of this era’s movement.

Moving into the 1800s, there were various rebuilds, renovations, and additions – the latest being in 2014, when they started reconstructing and moving around pieces of art.

Today, Rijksmuseum holds over an impressive 1 million objects (approx. 8,000 on display) that cover arts, history, and other types of crafts ranging from the years 1200 to 2000.

Van Gogh Museum – Opened in 1973, the Van Gogh Museum is comprised of 2 buildings with a progressive architecture style. The geometric space contrasts quite interestingly against the vivid and sometimes-delicate Van Gogh works.

Did you know that the original bulk of the museum’s collection was actually that of Theo Van Gogh – Vincent’s little brother? Later on, the collection was added on to with pieces the museum purchased and/or receieved through donation.

Today, it contains the largest collection of the artist’s paintings and drawings on the planet and is the most visited museum in the entire country.

Famous Works in the Rijksmuseum:

  • ‘The Night Watch’ by Rembrandt, 1642
  • ‘The Little Street’ Johannes Vermeer, 1658
  • ‘The Milkmaid’ Johannes Vermeer, 1658
  • ‘The Jewish Bride’, Rembrandt
  • ‘Threatened Swan’, Jan Asselijn
  • ‘The Battle of Waterloo’, Jan Willem Pieneman

Famous Works in the Van Gogh Museum:

  • ‘The Potato Eaters’, Vincent van Gogh, 1885
  • ‘Women on the Peat Moor’, 1883
  • ‘Sunflowers’, 1889
  • ‘Almond Blossom’, 1890
  • ‘Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat’, 1887
  • ‘Self-Portrait as a Painter’, 1887 – 1888

We had a wonderful time with Thijs. All the food stops were excellent and Thijs was extremely informative and friendly. It was not only a food tour, but a tour of different areas of Amsterdam with great background information. Would highly recommend. It’s a no brainer.

Catherina was fantastic. She was funny, engaging, and entertaining. It was a good mix of food, culture, and history and it was perfect. It was Hazella!

Frank Magdaleno

Our guide Mark was excellent. His deep knowledge of the history of Holland and Amsterdam in particular was top notch. Sharing his knowledge of Amsterdam from its early days of it being a commercial power in merchant trade and how this influenced the cuisine and culture of Amsterdam to this day. We visited small shops with expertise in traditional local foods. From apple pie made with apples only found in Amsterdam to an excellent cheese shop whose cheese master recently was awarded the world gold medal. I cannot more highly recommend this tour if you are both a foodie and history buff as me 🙂

Ken Ellis

My wife and I had a great time on this food tour. We learned a lot about the history and culture of the area, and we tasted a variety of delicious foods. Catharina was a fantastic tour guide, very personable, and a true local, as evidenced by the various passers-by greeting her as we walked around Jordaan. I highly recommend this tour!

Nick Hampson

Marc was a fantastic guide! Knowledgeable, funny, and warm. We stopped at very “off the beaten path” stops that gave us a real sense for the different tastes of Amsterdam, as well as a better understanding of its history.

J M Bostick

Victoria was a wonderful guide for our group of 6. She showed us the background and context for the paintings and made the art come alive. Excellent guide and tour. Highly recommend!

Outstanding tour and the guide was very passionate regarding the artwork. She provided an interesting perspective regarding Van Gogh ear incident and ultimately his death. We visited on a busy day and the guide was instrumental in taking us through the museum hitting high points and providing insight into the timeline of Van Gogh's life, associated artwork and locations in which he live, as well as personal associates. All these factors were brought to light as we viewed his work. This was a very nice tour and is recommended.

our small group guide was american and highly knowledgeable - enough so to know the history, the back stories and best angles for the museum. although no photos are allowed buy the postcard at the giftshop - it's a better photo anyway, this tour is excellent. we're headed back this year and will book this soon.

Outstanding tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the museum itself was very interesting. The only downside was that the meeting location 'I Amsterdam' sign was very crowded so it was not easy to find our guide. Certainly, recommend this tour.

Melissa knew her subject and was super enthusiastic, thank you for an amazing experience.

This was an awesome tour, with an amazing guide!

Our guide is excellent and very knowledgeable.

AWESOME, AWESOME. AWESOME! A must.

Exceptional tour with Victoria. I wish we had had time to return and use all the wonderful gems of information and insight she shared.

This tour was awesome!! I'm a huge fan of Vincent Van Gogh so this tour was a must see and it didn't disappoint. Victoria our tour guide was amazing!! She had so much inside info that I don't believe you would hear just walking through the museum. This is a must see tour especially if you are a fan.

Would not trade our tour guide spent extra time

Our tour guide was excellent. He discussed the historical and psychological influences on Van Gogh's life and work. The guide offered great insight into van Gogh's continuous work on his technique, and showed us the ways in which this can be seen in the development of his painting over his career. The tour was well worth it.

Stephanie was a great guide. She gave us wonderful information not only about the paintings but Van Gogh himself

Although it was somewhat confusing meeting our tour guide, it was awesome! Our tour director was excellent and gave us an in depth tout of the museum. She was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing information on Van Gogh. Very pleased and it was a very enjoyable experience!

Our tour of the Van Gogh Museum was one of our favorite experiences in Amsterdam! We were a small group of three, and our guide, Victoria, was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter. She is simply brilliant. We were absolutely delighted with the whole experience, and cannot recommend it highly enough. We saw the entire museum, and gained incredible insight into the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. Loved every minute of it - one million stars!!!

Our guide Tea was very knowledgeable and friendly. If I had had the time, I would have definitely joined her for the private tour OG Rijksmuseum. Don't try to do the museums on your own. Crowds are massive and much hassle. Her service and the fast entry benefits are well worth it.

Absolutely incredible. Our guide was Victoria and her passion for the museum was infectious and palpable. The trip was awesome and we learned an awful lot about the man and the people who helped to shape his life. You can never really enjoy a museum unless you have some insight, and for me, this was well worth the money. We met two other lovely couples and felt totally at ease with our guide. She listened to us and was truly interested in our thoughts too, which was great. We weren't just listening, we were interacting and the time flew by. Well done Viator!

Wonderful tour with a guide that was so knowledgable. She was very experienced and helpful. My guide was a fine arts major so she really knew in detail about Van Gogh. The time went so fast. I loved it! Such a pleasure.

Victoria was spectacular. My tour ended up being a private tour, and Victoria and I went long with our tour. She knows the museum and Van Gogh's life very well with an obvious passion for his story, work, and life. We discussed many topics related to his life, and death, and some things with no relation at all to Vincent. It was a fantastic tour with a knowledgable and friendly tour guide, and I was left to explore more of the museum after the tour was done. Not only do I recommend it, I may take the tour again on another trip to Amsterdam.

We booked a small group tour for Friday night 5-7; and it turned out to be a very smart move! Firstly, our tour guide ( who was delightful and extremely educated on her subject. I know this because I , too, work in the art field) took us right past the lines straight into the museum. Secondly, there weren't the usual hordes of tourists as the crowds tend to be a little smaller during these hours. Thirdly, our guide planned our route carefully through the museum weaving a cohesive and lively tale of Van Gogh's life and work, honing in on the best and most pertinent works. As an artist, I could not have been more pleased with an art tour. As a side note, we bumped into our guide a few days later while strolling around Amsterdam, and she not only remembered us but made s point of coming over to wish us a Merry Christmas. Like I said, booking a small group tour is a great way to see the museum in an efficient and informative manner and not get overwhelmed by the crowds.

We had the best experience with Victoria. She made Van Gogh come alive in her descriptions of his works..amazing

Fabulous tour with Victoria as our guide. Recommend it highly. Did not have to wait in line.

Paola was an excellent tourguide for our exploration of the Van Gogh museum. We really enjoyed it.

Christopher C

This tour was amazing. Virginia was extremely knowledgeable on all the paintings and Van Gough himself.

Wonderful experience. Victoria was fabulous ... couldn't have asked for anything better. Learned more about Van Gogh than we ever could have on our own.

Kröller-Müller Museum

Houtkampweg 6, Otterlo

Some 20,000 works of art can be found at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, The Netherlands. The art and sculpture museum (which opened in 1938) was founded by collector Helene Kröller-Müller, an early admirer of Vincent van Gogh. Although today Van Gogh is one of the world’s most famous artists, he received little recognition while he was alive. Kröller-Müller regarded Van Gogh as a ‘great spirit of modern art’ and was a prolific collector of his works. In fact, the attention she gave to his work contributed to his recognition as an artist. The Kröller-Müller Museum has the second-largest collection of Van Gogh’s art in the world (around 90 paintings and 180 drawings). In addition to the large collection of works by Van Gogh, the museum is home to masterpieces by artists including Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso, and Piet Mondriaan. The museum also has one of the largest sculpture gardens in Europe. This ‘outdoor gallery’ measures some 25 hectares and is open year-round to showcase more than 160 sculptures by iconic artists like Aristide Maillol and Pierre Huyghe.

The Kröller-Müller Museum is located in the middle of De Hoge Veluwe National Park, one of the largest continuous nature reserves in the Netherlands. The entrance fee to the museum also includes the entrance fee to the national park, and it is lovely to see how the sculptures, the garden, and the park all integrate together — which you may do by bicycle on one of the free loaner bikes available to visitors.
