How to Take Your Weed on a Road Trip

smoking weed road trip

As the holidays start rolling in, it’s time to start thinking about vacation time, travel, and ways to wind down and relax. If you’re planning on visiting friends and family over state lines, it’s essential to mind state legislation when traveling with weed. In Illinois, traveling with medical marijuana and recreational marijuana is legal, but there are some rules to familiarize yourself with first. Below we’ve compiled some quick reminders for when you take your weed on the road.

Marijuana in other states

Depending on your destination, you may need to research which varieties of cannabis products are legal to purchase and use—for example, compared to the states that neighbor Illinois, our state has some of the most relaxed marijuana laws. States that border Illinois either prohibit recreational use or are more strict in their medical cannabis programs.

As always, remember that private establishments may have their own rules about cannabis and the like. We recommend staying at a “420 friendly” establishment that allows you to consume or smoke marijuana while present. Cannabis-friendly inns, hotels, and BnBs are growing in popularity as marijuana becomes legal across the US, so check to see if any such establishments are near your destination.

Regardless of where you are driving, it’s important to note that it is still illegal to transport marijuana across state lines. Driving from one legal state to another legal state is still technically against the law -- meaning that recreational and medicinal products purchased from EarthMed will need to stay in Illinois. This also means that you cannot take edibles over state lines. The same goes for vapes, extracts, topicals, and other cannabis infused products. We also recommend leaving your smoking accessories at home when traveling across state lines -- only items intended for tobacco use are permitted when traveling from one state to another.

Marijuana in the car

When you’re staying in the state, avoiding public transit and driving your own vehicle is the best way to travel with weed. While traveling throughout Illinois for extended periods with marijuana in the car, it’s important to mind the laws about how to drive with weed. In Illinois, remember that you are not permitted to have marijuana products out while on the road. This rule applies to both the driver and all passengers in the vehicle. While on the road, marijuana products need to be in a sealed, odor-proof, and child-resistant container at all times. A zip-lock bag simply won’t do! Marijuana enthusiasts should equip themselves with a smell-proof weed case to keep all of their edibles, vape, and other cannabis products and accessories in one place.

As mentioned above, traveling with marijuana over state lines is prohibited. So if you plan to smoke weed in another state, you’ll have to purchase it there when you arrive. When planning your road trip, try to research the state-by-state laws and guidelines for purchasing and traveling with cannabis products.

Remember that while it is legal to drive with marijuana, you should never bring cannabis onto planes, trains, or any other means of public transportation. Follow this rule even if you aren’t leaving the state.

Can You Bring Weed on an Airplane?

No, you cannot bring weed or any cannabis products on an airplane, as it is illegal under federal law. Even though many states have legalized cannabis for medical or recreational use, airports adhere to federal laws and regulations, which consider cannabis a controlled substance. You can always visit a dispensary near O'Hare airport once you've safely arrived in the city of Chicago.

Can You Bring Weed on a Train?

Traveling with cannabis on a train is not as clear cut as it is on an airplane. In states where cannabis is legal for medical or recreational use, there may be specific rules regarding its transportation. Before you decide to travel with weed on a train, it's crucial to research the specific laws and regulations of the departure and destination locations, as well as any areas you may pass through during your journey.

With more states legalizing recreational marijuana and medical cannabis -- and federal legalization hopefully coming soon -- the last thing you want is a silly weed charge on your record. Crossing state lines with THC products, even between two states where marijuana is legal, can be considered a violation of federal law and can lead to legal consequences. Making sure that you adhere to the laws of wherever you are will help avoid an expensive headache. If you’re ever unsure where you can and can’t bring recreational and medicinal marijuana products, don’t guess! A quick and easy internet search will give you the information you need about traveling with weed.

This article is for information purposes only; we do not encourage anyone to break the law.

Are you getting ready to hit the road and wondering if your weed can ride, too? Because of the wavering legality of cannabis from place to place, taking cannabis on the road can be risky business. Still, it’s possible to minimize this risk with a little forethought. Knowing your local laws and carefully preparing your travel-friendly smoking kit are crucial steps to ensuring you’re within your rights and can carry your bud discreetly.

If you’re looking for the secrets of how to sneak weed on the plane like the peanut butter jar idea… think again. This guide is for responsible, mature adults who are not interested in acting deviously. We aim to help you understand the legality of traveling with weed and give you some tips and tricks for taking it in the car and on the plane. We’ll also cover some of the best 420 travel supplies for your smoking kit, so you can be ready to spark up as soon as you touch down.

Hotboxing your car while blasting Bob Marley’s Legend and cruising down I-70 may sound like a good idea—until you’re getting handcuffed by an ornery officer and explaining to him why there’s an oven-fire’s worth of smoke billowing from your open window.

Smoking and driving is never a good idea—but what about just keeping weed or a 420 travel kit in your car while you’re driving? Whether you’re in a state with legal weed like Colorado (or taking a Colorado Weedcation ) or you’re passing through an inhospitable land like Utah or Texas, there are a few ways to minimize risk while driving with weed in your car. Here are a few of our favorite tips to stay out of trouble while you’re on the road:

Our first piece of advice sounds obvious, and it might be a total buzzkill, but we recommend you don’t smoke in the car . Smoking—and even vaping—in your car before you drive is a dead giveaway. And even if you’re not high anymore, the lingering scent of smoke gives any police officer with a pair of nostrils probable cause to search your vehicle.

You might snort at this advice and say, “I’m a great high driver.” While we believe that driving high is not nearly as dangerous as driving drunk, it’s important to acknowledge that when you’re stoned, your reaction times are slower , your peripheral vision is decreased, and your ability to multi-task is impeded. You’re not going to necessarily drive off a cliff, but you aren’t exactly ready for a Formula 1 race, either. Recognizing the potential for impairment goes a long way.

If you have a duffle bag full of chronic with you in the car, chances are you’re going to have some explaining to do to the law. Even in states where weed is legal, the average Joe can’t just haul around pounds of kush. Possession jumps to distribution, community service turns into hard jail time. Unless it absolutely can’t be avoided, keeping your stash to under an ounce is a great rule of thumb.

Keep that herb in the trunk! Why? This tip could be the difference between a DUI and a simple possession charge — if you can’t reach it from the driver’s seat, you probably weren’t smoking while driving. Keep the stash in the trunk, know your rights , and play it cool.

Keep your car clean of roaches, pipes, papers. Our recommendation? Snag a smell proof stash bag or case. This sleek smoking kit keeps all of your essentials in one place. The outdoor-grade zipper keeps your stash smell-proof and the rugged exterior protects your smoking accessories from bumps in the road. It is, without a doubt, the best way to manage your smoking supplies—no matter where you’re traveling.

BloomGroove sells some really good weed storage containers , and you can also pick up some great 420 travel stash kits on Amazon like this smell-proof, water-proof, and lockable stash box called Blackbox by Kulbi .

Tips for Flying With Weed

smoking weed road trip

If you consume cannabis, the question of flying with your stash has surely crossed your mind. Understandably so: many people use cannabis as medicine and would never consider leaving home without it.

Some CBD companies like CBD Living are even making travel-size CBD products , which are safe and legal to fly with. The simple answer: it’s still technically illegal to fly with weed, but TSA isn’t interested in busting you for a vape pen and a few joints in your 420 travel kit.

“TSA security officers do not search for marijuana.” – TSA.gov

The long answer is, it’s a bit more complicated than that. The answer depends on where you’re flying, how much cannabis you intend to carry, and how much risk you are comfortable assuming. The following tips will clear things up and help you decide whether you should fly with your stash or just restock when you arrive.

Before we proceed, lets clear up a common misconception – TSA officers are not cops. They do security work, but their job is not to enforce the law. What about the canines? Those are more likely to be bomb dogs, as opposed to drug dogs, if you’re in the domestic terminal. Note: This pertains to domestic travel only! Being caught with cannabis abroad can have severe consequences, so be responsible.

The TSA has publicly stated on its website that its officers “do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs,” but warns that its agents are required to turn over those found with cannabis or other drugs to local law enforcement (aka the cops). That said, your departure city and destination are important — they will dictate the laws you are subject to if you were to get caught.

Because cannabis is illegal nationally, the federal legality will not change with location. However, you will be subject to the individual state’s laws and the airport’s laws, if applicable. Keep in mind there is a whole other set of rules for paraphernalia, so you definitely need to do something about those unique weed accessories you’re carrying.

Now, the worst-case scenario: what happens if you do get caught? The outcome will vary greatly depending on whether you get caught in Colorado or Arkansas.

For instance, the Denver International Airport made cannabis possession illegal on airport grounds despite its legality statewide. However, they probably aren’t going to do anything if you get caught. In 2014, 29 people were caught trying to leave Denver International Airport (DIA) with cannabis and in each instance, police declined to issue citations – the passengers were allowed to board planes after throwing out the cannabis or concentrates.

The result would likely have been wildly different if the same person was caught leaving Arkansas International Airport, where the penalty for possessing up to 4 ounces of marijuana is punishable with up to a year of jail time and fines up to $2,500. If you are traveling to or from Denver, we highly recommend reading our tips for smoking weed at high altitude . No one wants to inadvertently ruin their first “weedcation,” or a trip to Colorado to smoke.

The amount of weed you can fly with is directly linked to your departing state’s possession limits. For example, if you are flying with weed on a plane within a state with legal cannabis programs, you can fly with an amount up to that state’s legal medical and/or recreational limit. Just be aware that if you land in a state with less friendly cannabis laws, you are now at risk of being charged with possession.

If you are flying from a state where cannabis remains illegal and you are dead-set on flying, try to keep quantities under your state’s lowest tier possession limit. As a general rule of thumb, both TSA and local law enforcement officers are going to be less concerned if you are traveling with an amount of cannabis that is clearly for personal use (like a few joints, or a vaporizer and a small container with BHO or another concentrate ), as opposed to a weight viable for distribution.

There is no perfect combination of itinerary or cannabis quantity that will guarantee a risk-free flight. For those struggling with nerves, either consume before the flight or consider edibles, as they are virtually indistinguishable from their un-infused counterparts and produce very little odor.

One option is simply bringing your smoking supplies and then buying the herb itself when you arrive at your destination. A safety case stash box allows you to pack all your smoking essentials like rolling papers , pipes , grinders , lighters and more.

If the whole idea makes you uncomfortable, you might consider traveling with CBD, which is a non-psychoactive option that is perfectly legal to fly with.

As CBD and industrial hemp products are legal at the federal level, you are permitted to travel with them.  That said, we need to make a special note about hemp flower in particular.

If you are traveling with raw hemp flower, you’ll need to understand that, if you are caught with it, there’s an excellent chance that law enforcement will believe it is cannabis regardless of what you have to say. Quality organic hemp flower (like the strains from Canna Comforts) is visually and olfactory indistinguishable from cannabis flower (Lifter strain is good example of a legal high-CBD strain) so it will take laboratory testing to prove it’s legal.

While the legality of the buds can be determined through laboratory testing, you may be stuck somewhere until your name is cleared — not ideal!  For this reason, it might be best to stick to CBD vape pens while traveling for the time being.

10 Essentials for Your 420 Travel Kit

smoking weed road trip

Now that you know how and where you can travel with weed, you may be wondering how you can make your stash more portable. The answer? A personalized 420 travel kit.

These are a few of our favorite travel essentials — all of which simplify your smoking and vaping experience on the go . It’s a hassle to stop at a headshop when you arrive in a new city. Instead of scrambling for supplies, pack a travel-friendly, smell-proof 420 travel kit and you’ll have no problem taking flight once you touch down at your final destination.

Everyone knows using a grinder is critical for rolling joints or getting a smooth hit from your vape / pipe. You might prefer a premium grinder, but who wants to clean out their kief-catcher just to comply with TSA regulations? Easy to clean and quick to use, the inconspicuous, stashable grinder card is a crucial item for the traveling stoner.

You can pick up some really cool grinder cards on Amazon . This bundle from RAW includes a travel case with grinder card, papers, tips, a cigarette maker, and hemp wick.

An obvious essential that’s often forgotten and/or misplaced. Why waste time stopping at a gas station when you have a dozen on the coffee table at home? And yes, you can bring a lighter on-board, so long as it’s in your carry-on. You might have to leave the blow torch for your dab rig at home, though.

If you do forget your rolling tips , you can always rip off a piece of that airline magazine cover that’s in the seat pocket in front of you. But we prefer a clean crutch , so we always make sure we bring a crisp set of rolling tips.

This is a crucial tool we never travel without. The skinny metal tool will often be overlooked in TSA screenings, but it’s a good idea to meticulously clean it prior to travel, just in case. A slim, travel-size tool is essential for loading a vape pen or clearing your one-hitter.

They’re often included in good stash boxes like our favorites .

A silicone dab mat handles two tasks: it allows you to handle extracts with ease, and it also protects your Safety Case from getting sticky with oil—something you don’t want to happen, especially if you’re going to be flying again.

We use (and love) the premium silicone Honeymat from Dr. Dabber .

Smell-proof containers keep your stash organized and discreet. You can buy a variety of smell-proof vacuum storage containers like these.

Most of the time when we smoke on the road, we end up rolling joints. Having a pack of rolling papers on hand while traveling, even if you aren’t expecting to find weed at your destination, is a pro travel move.

A must for the traveling stoner, especially if you’re headed to a destination with a harsh penalty for smoking weed. Given the prevalence of e-cigs and the minimal smell of vaping oil, a vape pen is as incognito as it gets these days.

Our favorites is the Dr. Dabber Stella Vape

One-hitters are awesome for traveling for a number of reasons: they’re cheap, nearly impossible to break, and still pack quite the punch when smoking flower. Just make sure you clean it properly before heading to the airport. Check out this completely re-imagined one-hitter from Vessel .

Above all else, the most important piece of the traveling stoner’s puzzle is a smell-proof, discreet stash box. Sometimes you really need a child-safe, locking stash box to manage everything. Find our favorites, in our article on the Best Smell Proof Bags .

Key Takeaways

In most cases, the legality of traveling with weed is directly tied to local laws. This means you should take time to understand the laws in the area of departure and in your final destinations. For driving with weed, you’re subject to the laws of the land in every state you pass through — travel responsibly.

TSA has special regulations regarding the amount of liquids or types of things that can be carried in your carry-on bag and luggage. Some CBD companies like CBD Living make travel-sized CBD products that meet these TSA regulations.

Alternative options, like taking edibles or vaporizers instead of fresh flower, carrying clean smoking tools and buying cannabis when you arrive, or opting for legal CBD products may be best in some cases.

There are many compact tools and stash boxes that can aid you in traveling with weed. If you plan to travel with your bud, assemble a 420 travel kit for seamless smoking on-the-go!

10 Weed Essentials for Your Next Road Trip

Estimated 5-minute read

So you love to travel and it turns out your favorite way of doing it is on the road. If you’re a road trip person and a cannabis enthusiast, combining both hobbies has probably crossed your mind…

Thinking about the places you want to visit, planning the best route for your multiple destinations, hitting the road with your favorite people with the killer playlist you probably spent hours curating, and adding a little bit of weed to the experience. Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it?

In this article I’ve researched the road trip weed essentials so you don’t have to, and then came up with a list of essentials and a few traveling tips.

Before we go through the list, there’s two important disclaimers:

1. It’s important that you get familiar with local regulations before traveling. Every law on marijuana and its consumption with miscellaneous articles are different from state to state, so make sure you check them out before planning your route.

2.  While smoking is a lot much safer than driving when you’ve been drinking alcohol, it is never a good idea to smoke and drive. When you’re stoned your reaction times are slower and your peripheral vision is decreased, along with other effects. Keep in mind that you’re just a regular person hitting a fun, relaxing road trip with your friends, not a Formula 1 driver.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s begin.

Weed Essentials:

Smell-proof stash bag.

I know it’s convenient to carry everything with you, but it’s even more important that you remain discreet about smoking while you’re traveling, so look for a bag or a container that looks practical and subtle.

There are countless smell-proof travel kits, so surf the web for the one you like the most! Bags such as The Vault and Firedog may just do the trick.

KØL mini 2.0 is the perfect companion for your traveling experience.

This pipe implements magnetic tech and purifies the smoke, so annoying coughing during your road trip won’t be an issue for you and your friends.

KØL mini is made with magnets with the intention of making the cleaning process a very easy task; you’ll just need to snap it open, wipe it, and put the two pieces back together.

If you prefer to grind your weed, you don’t want to forget it and ruin your road trip, so pack that grinder, no matter how big it is!

And if you’re still looking for the perfect grinder, look no more. KLIP will do wonders for your traveling experience, as it is a high-end product carefully produced with quality materials. This grinder also assembles easily because of its magnets, additionally making it very easy to clean.

It’s a very common thing to lose lighters whenever we take them to parties, friends houses, let alone a road trip through the country. I suggest you carry a lighter that isn’t very special to you, and try to bring a backup just in case.

Rolling papers

If you prefer smoking joints to pipes or vapes, this rolling HAMP papers are one of the healthiest options in terms of rolling papers.

HAMP rolling papers are made of dried cannabis sativa pulp, they’re all-natural, organic, and ultra sustainable.

Smell proof containers

A discreet container or a bag to store your weed will come in very handy for your road trip. Products such as Hemper Camo Smell and Firedog Smoking Smell Proof Bag are great complements, so check out which suits you best.

Vape pen or One-hitter

If carrying weed around the country makes you a bit anxious, maybe now is a good time to try an oil vape pen or a one-hitter.

There’s a whole discussion about which is healthier: vaping or smoking. Perhaps one day we’ll get into the details, but for now, the main difference between the two is that vape pens usually use concentrated cannabis oil, making them more discreet with smell. Meanwhile, the one-hitters are considered smoking pipes that resemble cigarettes, packing enough dry herb for a hit or two.

According to Hemper, vapes provide travelers with an easy-to-use, portable, compact smoking tool that will go unnoticed, thanks to its faint scent. On the other hand, one-hitters are perfect for stealth smoking, saving money and microdosing.

Portable pocket ashtray

Whether you’re parked somewhere enjoying the view in your car, in the middle of the woods, or close to the ocean, capture your ash responsibly with a portable and closable ashtray.

Pollution and starting fires are definitely not a choice anymore, so I’ve found a great product: the Meta-U Portable Pocket Ashtray traps smell inside and it's made of flame proof material!

Resin wipes

Resin can be annoying at some times because it will make you get sticky everywhere. Products such as Higher Standards Resin Rags are perfect for this occasion, so be sure to purchase wipes that will work.

If you’re still nervous about having cannabis buds in your car’s trunk, you could try looking for your favorite edibles like gummies or other products such as Fruit Slabs . Try them out before hitting your road trip and decide if they’re a good choice for on the road high times!

Tips for hitting the road

Key to Cannabis mentions 3 important tips for driving with weed, so keep the following in mind:

Do not smoke in the car

Besides the effects of marijuana that were mentioned earlier in this article, let me remind you that smoking and even vaping in your car is not the brightest idea. Remember that the lingering scent of weed smoke can get you into trouble if any police officer pulls you to the side of the road. Do not take the risk.

Keep your stash under an ounce

Keeping your stash under an ounce is a great rule of thumb, even in the states where weed is legal. If you’d like to take more, research information about the state’s marijuana laws, how much a person can carry for recreational purposes and such.

Keep the cannabis flower in the trunk

If things turn ugly, here’s a reasonable argument: if you can’t reach it from the driver’s seat, you probably weren’t smoking while driving. Key to Cannabis highlights that this tip could be the difference between a DUI and a simple possession charge. Again, do not take the risk.

That’s it for essentials, recommendations and tips. And last but not least, don’t forget to make the greatest music playlist, pack your favorite munchies, and stay hydrated! Make an effort to be the most responsible driver and stoner during your road trip, and don’t forget to have a great time.

The Top 10 Strains To Smoke On A Road Trip

On the road and need some good company? These ten strains will do the trick.

/

Seb Jaramillo

When you don’t have the right company, the right music, or any other distraction, a road trip can become a little boring. With the help of the ten strains we’ve listed, you can turn even the most tedious road trip into a memorable one.

One of the main benefits of using cannabis on a road trip is the ability to unwind and relax. You can reduce any stress or anxiety brought on by extended periods of travel by using the right strain. Additionally, some strains can help to lessen motion sickness, making the journey more pleasant and comfortable.

Cannabis can also enhance the scenic views and natural beauty of your road trip. While some strains are known to intensify colors and make them seem more vibrant, others are known to increase your appreciation of nature and make the surrounding scenery seem more majestic.

Whether you want to unwind, improve the scenery, or make the most of your overall experience, we’ll help you unlock a slew of advantages that will allow you to fully enjoy the journey ahead. So, gather your belongings, hit the road, and prepare to elevate your road trip experience with the help of these top ten cannabis strains.

Froyo THCA Flower

product

THCA HEMP FLOWER – GOLD LINE

Traveling from state to state with cannabis isn’t the best idea, considering it’s still illegal in many states and at a federal level. But we won’t kill the vibe. Instead, we’ve found something just as potent as what you planned on bringing, but it’s also legal nationwide.

Introducing  Bloomz’s Gold Line THCA Flower  in the delightful and creamy Froyo strain, the perfect companion for road trips. This refreshing Sativa strain will keep you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed the whole ride. Impressively, this THCA flower clocks in at a striking 25%+ THCA.

And if you’ve learned anything about THCA, it’s that this cannabinoid is the precursor to Delta-9 THC, meaning when THCA is heated, it turns into Delta-9 and produces the exact same effects. Plus, you won’t cross state or federal laws since THCA is legal per the 2018 Farm Bill.

This particular Gold Line from  Bloomz  features the best nugs, strains, and batches from the finest artisanal growers in Oregon and Colorado. Available in 3.5g and 7g, Bloomz’s Gold Line THCA Flower in Froyo won’t disappoint. Grab yours now and hit the road with this loyal companion.

Sour Diesel

smoking weed road trip

The energizing effects and distinctive diesel-like aroma of the Sativa-dominant strain Sour Diesel are well known. It’s one of the stronger strains available, and experienced cannabis users favor it because its THC content, which ranges from 20% to 25%, is among the highest. While its flavor is a blend of diesel, citrus, and earthy notes, its dense buds and high trichome content give it a frosty appearance.

When consumed, Sour Diesel’s energizing and uplifting effects can enhance creativity, boost mood, and promote focus and productivity. These effects make it an excellent choice for road trips, where it can provide a much-needed boost of energy and reduce stress and anxiety during long drives.

Sour Diesel’s cerebral effects can also promote deep thinking and help you stay alert and focused on the road. Whether you’re a musician, artist, or writer, this strain can inspire creativity and make your long drive more enjoyable and fulfilling. Holding Moose Labs Classic MouthPeace at San Rafael High School aka the birthplace of 420

The most wonderful time of the year is soon to be upon us: 420. What better way to celebrate than smoking your way through the most weed-friendly states in America ?

If you’re in need of a weedcation , 420 is the perfect time to travel, with cannabis events popping up across the country.

We’ve got you covered when it comes to planning your 420 road trip, from where to go to what you should (and should not) bring along.

The History of 420

The history behind 420 is a bit… hazy. Some reference Bob Dylan’s legendary song Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 , others point to the birthday of Adolf Hitler.

In reality, it can all be traced back to a group of Californian teens.

In 1971, a group of teens (nicknamed ‘the Waldos’) from San Rafael High School would gather at 4:20PM by the campus’ statue of chemist Louis Pasteur for a quick sesh. They chose this specific time because extracurricular activity had usually ended by then. The group would use ‘420’ as a code for marijuana.

After high school, one of the Waldos started working as a roadie with Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh. The band is said to have helped popularize the term ‘420’. In the early 1990s, a group of Grateful Dead fans handed out flyers that invited people to smoke ‘420’ on April 20 at 4:20 PM; one landed in the hands of Steve Bloom, a former reporter for High Times magazine . The magazine printed the flyer and continued to reference the number, further popularizing the term.

The rest is history.

What to Know Before You Go

Before setting out on your 420 road trip, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • If you live in a state where medical or recreational use of cannabis is legal, it’s easy to forget that isn’t the case everywhere. What You’ll Need

Like any road trip, it’s important to make sure you pack the essentials. No, we’re not referring to maps, sunglasses and travel pillows. If you intend to smoke your way across country or state, make sure you have the real travel essentials.

  • Using a grinder is critical for rolling the best joints and the smoothest hits. An easy-to-clean and quick-to-use grinder card is perfect for any travelling stoner.
  • Just as important as the vehicle that you’re travelling in is your favorite smoking vehicle. Whether you prefer big bong hits or pipe puffs, carefully stow away your paraphernalia pieces.
  • If you’ll be travelling with others, or stopping for festivals or meet-ups, take steps to stay safe! Don’t forget to pack your favourite Moose Labs MouthPeace. Sleek and slim – the MouthPeace Slim is half the size of the Original and perfect for travel.
  • Above all else, one of the most vital travel pieces is a smell-proof, discreet stash box. Not only does a stash box keep your bud fresh, but it helps keep it safe and secure.
  • Don’t overlook the basics. Make sure to pack more than enough lighters, papers, tips. For extra protection, the Mini can save you from contamination or a soggy joint that barely rips.

Whether you’re travelling the coasts of California or the mountains of Colorado, do your research and pack properly before you set out on your 420 road trip.

Wherever you go or whatever you do – smoke safe!

Cannabis Road Trip Tips: See Sights and Stay Safe With These 7 Rules

Cannabis tends to spark a desire for adventure, and with recreational and medicinal cannabis legal in more locations than ever, this summer is a perfect time to combine your love of the open road with your love of America’s favorite herb.

While pairing any type of travel with cannabis can be a little tricky, trips that require driving present a unique set of challenges. However, following a few simple rules makes it easy to stay safe and compliant with local laws as you take the high road, and incorporating cannabis can make for a wonderful trip if you do things right. Let the following tips guide you as you gather your crew, pack up the car, and head out on your next great adventure.

Rule #1: Trade Off Being the Designated Driver

For every day you’re on the road, you’ll want at least one person to stay completely sober, so the more buddies you bring, the more people in the car will have the option of being high for the ride. For the lucky passengers, riding high has many benefits. The hours will fly by; the scenery will be especially beautiful; you’ll laugh at pretty much everything along the way; you’ll jam out to music; and some strains even quell nausea in passengers prone to carsickness.

If you’re planning on riding solo you don’t have to take cannabis out of the picture completely, but it’s never okay to drive under the influence (no matter how deserted the lonely desert roads may seem), so plan your consumption for when you arrive at each day’s destination. Bonus: it gives you something to look forward to as the miles slip away beneath your tires.

Rule #2: Don’t Bring It Across State or Country Lines

Bringing cannabis across any state lines is illegal federally – even if you’re driving across the bridge from legal Washington to legal Oregon, it’s technically a no-no. Are you likely to get stopped if you’re driving safely? Nope, but just be aware of what’s officially acceptable and what’s not. It’s especially unwise to cross international borders with cannabis, even on accident. If you’re driving from Washington state to British Columbia, for instance, be sure you triple-check your purse or suitcase for wayward joints you might have forgotten about before you arrive at the border.

Don’t lament the fact that you can’t bring your homegrown bud along for the whole trip; use it as an excuse to check out the local selection in the cannabis-friendly places you visit.

Rule #3: Keep It in the Trunk

If you’re driving with cannabis – especially pungent raw flower – keep it in the trunk while you’re moving. That way, if you get pulled over because your tail light is out, it’s best not to raise any questions with a skunky car, even if cannabis is completely legal where you are. Police officers don’t have a good way of testing whether a driver is high, so a mere whiff could be enough to raise suspicions and cause trouble. No one should be smoking in the car while it’s moving: if you want to re-up on the go, pack some edibles for passengers to munch on.

Shop highly rated stores near you

  • See all stores

Rule #4: Brush Up on Local Stores, Strains, and Regulations

It’s always best to know before you go – before you set off on your journey, determine where cannabis is legal and where it’s not, whether you’ll need a medical card to procure some, and what any local penalties entail. If you have a medical card, figure out which other states will accept your out-of-state authorization . Are you looking to stop at a rec store while you’re in, for instance, Colorado? Keep in mind that even where cannabis is legal state-wide, some cities have banned local sales, so use our dispensary finder to pinpoint the places you’d like to visit.

Once there, use our strain explorer to figure out which strains are available nearby, or ask your budtender to recommend local favorites that you can’t get anywhere else.

Rule #5: Plan Around the Scenery

Road trips were made for getting away from your day-to-day routine, and perhaps more than any other form of travel, they’re about the journey over the destination. Pick a drive with beautiful foliage, ocean views, mountainous elevation gains, or unique geographical formations, sit back in the passenger seat, and enjoy the view out the windows. The more unique, peaceful or colorful the scenery, the better. Roadside points of interest or elevated vantage points make for great places to stop, stretch, and smoke, too.

Rule #6: Bring Good Music, Podcasts, and Snacks

Good things to eat and listen to are a must for any road trip, and for a cannabis-centric road trip that’s especially true. Download all the new albums you’ve been meaning to get through, and stock up on podcasts from the likes of This American Life, Radiolab, On Being, and TED Radio Hour on topics such as “what is beauty,” “the unknown brain,” “how it all began,” and “are you sure?” – you’ll be transfixed and amazed at how fast the miles pass. As you listen, chow down on everything from white cheddar popcorn to apple slices to those tasty peanut butter pretzels – and be sure to stop at fun, funky restaurants that you come across off the beaten path.

Rule #7: Choose the Perfect Destination

If you live in a state where cannabis is illegal, a road trip is the perfect excuse to visit a legal state and shop for edibles, concentrates and strains to your heart’s content. Just remember to consume them without breaking any rules. To that end, there are numerous canna-friendly bed and breakfasts popping up in legal states, and if you’re bringing a camper van or plan to pitch your own tent, so much the better for enjoying your freshly purchased herb.

If cannabis is already plentiful where you’re living or traveling, other great destinations include awe-inspiring natural wonders (think Redwoods, Niagara Falls, or the Grand Canyon), secluded campgrounds where you can enjoy your cannabis meditatively, hot springs where you can stargaze with your sweetheart and let the world slip away, or fantastic restaurants where the meal will be better than ever when you’re medicated. Wherever you go, whether on a day trip or a cross-country drive, remember to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Bringing Bongs on Vacation: How to Fly or Road Trip Safely

Airplane departing from runway at sundown

Every holiday season, many of us stoners find ourselves fumbling to book flights to visit our families in prohibition states. This can pose some alarm to the chronic cannabis user . The recreational use of weed may be legal where you live. Or, at the very least cannabis may have been decriminalized. But that doesn’t mean you will find smooth sailing if you want to take the bong you just bought at our pipe shop with you when you travel.

For starters, marijuana is still classified as a Schedule I narcotic by the Federal Government, putting it on par with heroin in the eyes of the current administration. As such, any time you encounter federal officials during your travels (as in TSA employees at airports) you run the risk of incurring their wrath.

All of this raises the question: “Is there a safe way to travel with a bong or glass pipe ?” Read on to find out.

First, a Word of Caution

Before we get into specific tips on how to travel with a bong we’d like to propose a simple solution to the problem: don’t. We don’t recommend trying to fly with a water pipe , and herb vaporizers are out of the question. Although they are excusable and legitimate for consuming tobacco, bongs are obviously more popular in the cannabis community and some states differentiate between regular pipes and water pipes. The issue is complex, as states can make their own definitions on this regard. So know the law of wherever you’re flying when deciding what’s appropriate to pack. In some states even a clean bong could spell trouble.

Colorado is not the only state where you will find a headshop, nor is the US the only country where they exist. So if your ultimate destination is a weed-friendly one, why not just avoid all the potential hassles between here and there by leaving your bong home and buying a new one when you arrive in Amsterdam, or LA or wherever you’re heading?

If traveling, the easiest thing to do may be to just pick up some rolling papers or a new glass piece from the local smoke shop so you don’t have to worry about cleaning your current arsenal.

In other words, don’t attempt to board a flight with your bong. Leave it at home and then buy a new one when you reach your destination.

Tips for Driving Safely with a Bong

Miniature VW van beside larger real-life model

Bongs and road trips are made for each other. But authorities in some states seem to get their kicks out of hassling people when it comes to weed or weed paraphernalia. So if you’re heading on an epic road trip to Miami or Boston or elsewhere take the following tips to heart:

Don’t Use the Bong in Your Car

For that matter, don’t smoke weed in your car at all while you’re driving. The smell of quality herb has a way of lingering, (even if you have the windows open), on clothes, upholstery and other items.

Clean Your Bong Before Leaving Home

Even a little bit of unburnt herb stuck to the inside of the bowl can get you in hot water in some states. It’s not worth it. Clean your bong before hitting the road and pack it away until you reach your destination.

Don’t Carry Bongs in the Passenger Compartment

Clean your bong before leaving home and then store it in the trunk. That way, even if you’re stopped and the cops find some reason to search your car it’ll be obvious you weren’t smoking weed in it.

Can You Legally Fly From LAX With Cannabis?

California was the first U.S. state to legalize medicinal cannabis use in 1996 with the passage of the Compassionate Use Act. However, the state took surprising amount of time to catch up with the corresponding recreational counterpart—only legalizing state-wide close to ten years after Colorado burst the scene open. Seemingly on the heels of the recreational movement, it isn’t surprising to see a few innovations arise from this unique political environment. In October of 2020, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) became the first airport to officially announce an outward policy of non-intervention for cannabis holders flying out of state. Although there seem to be few caveats.

A statement on the Los Angeles International airport’s website puts it this way:

“As of January 1, 2018, California law allows for individuals 21 years of age or older to possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana for personal consumption. With the change in state law, the policy and procedures of the Los Angeles Airport Police Division (APD) regarding marijuana were updated to reflect this change. APD officers, who are California Peace Officers, have no jurisdiction to arrest individuals if they are complying with state law. However, airport guests should be aware that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening stations are under federal jurisdiction. Also, passengers should be aware that state-by-state cannabis laws can vary significantly, and they are encouraged to check the laws of the states in which they plan to travel.”

So basically, don’t count on sympathy from the screening agents. TSA is a Federal authority and the Feds just don’t like cannabis all that much, presently. The TSA may be more lenient in some places than in others, but even if you get your bong through your security at DIA or LAX, it doesn’t mean you’ll encounter friendly faces somewhere else.

Tips on Flying With Your Bong

Man standing with crossed leg beside light turquoise suitcase in pastel pink room

Driving with a bong can be tricky, but it can and is done all the time. Flying with a bong is another story altogether. When you get to the airport you’re going to encounter TSA officers. They work for the federal government and in the eyes of the feds, weed is a dangerous narcotic.

Bring Rolling Papers or Buy Locally Instead

This harks back to what we suggested earlier about leaving your bong home when you travel. The potential hassles you’ll encounter trying to fly with a bong are generally not worth it. Just pick one up when you reach your destination or make do with joints while you’re traveling. It’s a lot easier, a lot cheaper and in the end, you’ll still get your buzz.

We recommend this for both domestic and international travel. Why? Because even if your bong is clean and you have some tobacco with you to lend credence to the notion that you use the bong for that reason, many countries have zero tolerance for cannabis or cannabis paraphernalia.

If You Purchase a Bong Overseas, Leave It There

If you fly without your bong as we suggest and then purchase one overseas we advise you to leave it there because US customs enforces federal law and again, to the feds, weed is a no-no. Even if there is no residue in your bong, customs may confiscate it.

How to Clean Your Bong for Travel

It always surprised me to hear of people throwing away their glass reefer pipes once they collected too much resin. That is a minor standard for traditional tobacco pipes made of wood or meerschaum or other porous materials that cannot be thoroughly cleaned. Glass, though, can be cleaned so thoroughly as to appear like new and hit like the day it was purchased. Let’s get into the grit of it.

There is an old and simple method that is very effective – as long as you’re willing to put in a little bit of time and elbow grease. A high proof rubbing alcohol – 91% is the most common – is like magic for cleaning glass. If you have a little time on your hands then soaking the pipe by submerging underneath alcohol in a plastic bag or Tupperware is a great way to start. Most residue with fall off overnight, but the addition of coarse salt (kosher works well) and some agitating by shaking the bag is the quickest way to get your pipe sparkling clean. You might want to run through the process a second time with a second, separate bag and clean alcohol if you really want the residual off.

Closing Thoughts From Our Denver Head Shop Team

In a perfect world, no one would ever get in trouble for carrying a bong or heady glass or any other cannabis paraphernalia. But our world is anything but perfect and so if you plan on traveling with a bong you will need to exercise caution. By taking the above tips to heart you should have a trouble-free vacation or road trip.

Marijuana grow busted in Maine as feds investigate trend in 20 states

Legal cannabis states offer plenty of options, from desserts to forests, for the adventurous at heart

Article content

Road trips are back in fashion in a big way, with the pandemic catapulting them back into popularity so much so that vans and other road trip vehicles were snatched up and rented in record time.

5 great U.S. road trips for weed lovers Back to video

Current gas prices and uncertain economic times, however, may have some people in the U.S. are staying close to home.

Still, if a person happens to be a cannabis lover getting a bit stir crazy while waiting for prices at the pump to return to normal, there are some great road trips in states where marijuana is legal that are worth investing in and investigating. Some might require saving, while others are more approachable if timed right.

  • 3 Cali Road Trips Every Cannabis Lover Should Try At Least Once

Here are five unforgettable road trips that are worth saving up for if someone loves both the open road and recreational marijuana.

San Francisco to Humboldt County

This is, in many ways, the Mecca of weed road trips. It is best to start in San Francisco, as it is easier to load up on essentials and rent a car in the city rather than the wilderness. San Francisco is the first place to ever have a medical marijuana dispensary in the U.S., at The San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club, opened by Dennis Peron .

Enjoy the slow pace of Route 1 along the coast, and soak up the natural beauty. Eventually drivers will arrive in the Emerald Triangle’s most famous area, Humboldt County.

Humboldt is known for cultivating some of the best marijuana in the world, and its small towns have all sorts of cannabis-themed activities. This area is also home to some of the largest trees in the world. Avenue of The Giants is perhaps the most breathtaking wooded drive a person may take in his or her life.

Visitors don’t even need any weed to marvel at the wonder of the ancient giant Redwoods throughout Humboldt county.

Shelter Cove and Trinidad are two fantastic Humboldt coastal towns worth one’s time before beginning the return towards the Golden Gate.

It is important to note that while this is certainly a must-do for any true marijuana and road trip lover, it is also a bit pricey. California gas, hotel and car rental prices are some of the highest in the entire U.S., so this might be a trip to save up for.

Arizona to New Mexico

Arizona and New Mexico have some of the most beautiful and iconic desert scenery in the U.S. To top it off, both states have legalized recreational cannabis, which makes an Arizona to New Mexico road trip more enticing than ever. Remember that although weed is legal in both states, a person cannot bring one state’s weed into the other. Traveller should make it easy on themselves and finish any Arizona supply before heading to New Mexico.

Even though, according to National Park Service policy , marijuana is illegal in National Parks, make sure to find a way to legally visit the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest in Arizona.

That said, the most famous desert drive is through Monument Valley in Northern Arizona. From Monument Valley, visitors can make their way to the culturally rich and delicious city of Santa Fe, which boasts a good variety of cannabis dispensaries, and makes it a great place to sleep and safely sample some of New Mexico’s finest herb.

There is a plethora of ornate towns, from Wild West themed ghost towns to iconic UFO sighting locations like Roswell. There is a rich history for visitors to learn along this dusty trail, and also some great one-of-a-kind shopping.

Try and plan this trip for early fall, as this is when temperatures (and prices) drop and make this a very affordable road trip option.

An Alaskan adventure

A road trip in Alaska is the ultimate trip for those who love wilderness, cannabis and lots of driving. Alaska is a vast state, but a road trip through this untouched natural playground can be highly rewarding.

Gas is not the cheapest in Alaska (indeed, it is the third highest, just behind Hawaii and California, according to U.S. News ), but the state does make it easy, and often free, to sleep in one’s car. Travellers can even camp for free on the side of the road, which is something one will see more often than one would think while exploring the state.

This is also a great option for those who have summers off, but aren’t a big fan of 100-degree days at the beach. Alaska has pleasant, but cool, summer weather, and up to 20 hours of daylight for much of the season.

The Oregon coast

For those who want a taste of the Emerald Triangle, but perhaps on a tighter budget, consider a road trip from Oregon to Seattle. The Emerald Triangle stretches into Oregon, allowing travellers to sample the same ideal cannabis conditions, but at a fraction of the price.

In fact, according to salary.com , living costs are 19.9 per cent higher in Los Angeles than in Portland, Ore.’s largest city.

While a person may pay 20 per cent less, visitors will still get all sorts of breathtaking beauty. From lush old-growth forests to quaint seaside towns along cliffs, an Oregon Coast road trip is nothing short of breathtaking.

Sure, Oregon’s gas prices are still the fifth highest in the nation, but this trip won’t break the bank nearly as much as a California coast trip.

Reno to Las Vegas

If a person loves cannabis, but is on a budget, as well as wants to see nature, but also loves a party, look no further than a road trip from Reno to Las Vegas.

Both Nevada cities are known for gambling and nightlife, but now they also have legal cannabis. Since Reno and Las Vegas have successful casinos, it is often easy to find very reasonable hotel room rates, which can help cut down on costs.

Lake Tahoe is a great stop to enjoy a bit of nature and tranquility between these two high-energy destinations.

Once arriving in Las Vegas, however, visitors might be able to be among the first cannabis enthusiasts to enjoy a weed lounge since Nevada passed legislation to allow these spots in the state.

This means that at the end of a day of driving, a person can feel free to mix and mingle with a joint in a modern, Vegas-style lounge environment. Not a bad way to end a day on the road.

420 is here (not really for Ohio): How far do Ohioans have to drive to get legal marijuana?

smoking weed road trip

Saturday marks Ohio's 420 the first "green" holiday since Ohio legalized recreational marijuana in November. But recreational weed sales in the state aren't set to begin until June at the earliest .

So, what is a marijuana enthusiast to do?

If you don't have a medical marijuana card, you'll have to drive. Remember, taking marijuana across state lines is still illegal under federal law even if you're moving it from one legal state to another. You'll have to use it in whatever state it's purchased in if you don't want to run afoul of the law.

More on Ohio recreational marijuana: Ohio recreational marijuana for beginners: Navigating THC, pre-rolls, edibles and terpenes

With that in mind, the Dispatch set out to see just how far you'll have to go from some of Ohio's bigger cities to legally buy recreational marijuana.

Legal marijuana in Columbus

The closest recreational marijuana dispensary to Ohio's capital city is in Petersburg, Michigan. You'll have to drive 161 miles or two hours and 41 minutes to get there.

Legal pot in Cleveland

The nearest recreational dispensary to the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is in Monroe, Michigan at 133 miles or two hours and five minutes of driving.

Legal weed in Cincinnati

As the proverbial crow flies, Morenci (at 200 miles away or three and a half hours of driving) is technically the closest place to get recreational weed for residents of the Queen City. But in terms of driving time, Danville, Illinois—the home of two recreational dispensaries—is closest, with two hours and 59 minutes of road time, or 202 miles of travel.

Legal marijuana in Akron

Like Cleveland, Monroe, Michigan is the closest city with a recreational dispensary at 155 miles or two hours and 23 minutes of driving.

Legal marijuana in Dayton

Morenci, Michigan is the closest city with recreational weed available at 147 miles or two hours and 43 minutes of driving from Dayton. In terms of drive time, Petersburg is slightly closer at two hours and 30 minutes of driving or 168 miles.

What's going on with legal weed in Ohio?

Ohio residents might not have to drive far at all to get recreational weed later this year. Ohio's Division of Cannabis Control could approve recreational licenses for many existing medical dispensaries as early as June.

In the meantime, the only ways of acquiring legal weed in Ohio is with a medical marijuana card or by taking a road trip.

The Ultimate Cannabis Road Trip Through California

  • Cannabis 101
  • Strains & products
  • Science & tech
  • Leafly Lists

When: May through September

How many miles: 1,014

How many driving hours: 21 hours

How many days: 5

California is the heartland of American cannabis, and has been since that reputation was cemented during the Summer of Love. Californians grow the best, smoke the best, and recognize the best better than the populace of any other place. To road trip across the green-friendly Golden State, from the old-school Emerald Triangle to cutting-edge LA, is to experience California cannabis culture in full.

Between these cornerstones, you’ll revel in the rich cannabis history of San Francisco, zone out in yurts and yoga classes along the Big Sur coastline, and drive as far as Joshua Tree, where the inimitable landscape begs to be explored with an elevated mind. And quite apart from the stops you make along the way, the drop-dead-gorgeous drive will blow your mind over the course of a thousand miles in five unforgettable days.

Note: While Californians legalized recreational cannabis use for adults 21+ in 2016, rec sales don’t begin until January 2018—meaning that for now, you’ll need a California driver’s license and medical recommendation to purchase cannabis at a dispensary.

In addition to frequent appearances on the Leafly List of best dispensaries in Northern California , HPRC has been lauded as the Arcata Business of the Year, a Best in Humboldt County dispensary, and an A+-rated business by the Better Business Bureau. They’re carbon-neutral, Clean Green Certified, and an all-around positive influence in the industry. After checking out their onsite garden and admiring the clone selection, pick up all things Humboldt: Scatterbrain Live Resin (a delectable hybrid ) from Humboldt Marijuana Co. , Toasted Coconut Chips (30mg CBD, 15mg THC, flavored with maple and Vietnamese cinnamon) from Humboldt Harvest ; and Private Reserve OG (a pheno of San Fernando Valley OG ) by UpNorth Humboldt . You can rest easy knowing that all have been thoroughly tested by the dispensary for contaminants and potency.

(Courtesy of Humboldt Marijuana Co.)

With cannabis in tow (we recommend a dab of Scatterbrain once you arrive in Loleta—don’t forget a portable rig or concentrate pen ), drive south to Loleta to find the internationally beloved Loleta Cheese Factory , where you can sample cheeses that are older than you are and gorge yourself on melty, gooey sandwiches from the grilled cheese restaurant— Queso Kings —next door. Once you’re well on your way into a cheese coma, continue south to the small town of Fortuna, where the elegant antiquated architecture of this perfectly preserved Victorian town will take your breath away and transport you back in time.

Shop highly rated dispensaries near you

  • See all dispensaries

For lodging, you won’t find a more Victorian option than the  Gingerbread Mansion , which lives up to its name with turrets, accents, embellishments, rich patterns and fabrics, and plenty to occupy your eyes while you’re high. Specific room picks include the Veneto Suite and the Hideaway Room, both of which make a perfect place to cozy up after a surreptitious sesh outside. Be sure to partake of the afternoon tea (which also includes wine); if you’re up for some evening exploring afterwards, hit the town’s quaint thrift stores including Lost Coast Bargain Outlet and Finders Keepers to buy some weird old stuff you don’t need at all (that’s the fun of it). Get plenty of sleep tonight; tomorrow, you’re going to want to gorge yourself on the complimentary homemade breakfast as soon as it’s served and hit the road early.

In Hopland, re-up on cannabis necessities at the coolest solar-powered dispensary you’ve ever been to: Emerald Pharms , where you should pick up an incredible edible or two from Flour Child (think apricot-rose jam and THC granola) and some ABX Soft Gels ($48 for 24 ten-milligram capsules). Find your way back to Highway 1 (the 116 will get you there); another few hours on the road and you’ll roll into San Francisco just in time for a late lunch of the best arepas in California, at Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen . A fave of Guy Fieri (and of plenty more people without TV shows), this maize-obsessed eatery serves up Venezuelan comfort food including yuca fries, taro chips, and signature arepas—grilled pockets of white or yellow corn made fresh daily by hand, and stuffed with everything from pulled pork to spicy chicken catira to the can’t-miss combo of blackened beef asada, queso fresco, and sweet plantains.

Mission Dolores Park. (photo_chaz/iStock)

Loosely translated, Pica Pica means “a little of this, a little of that,” so we recommend you go the route the name suggests and order several mix-and-match dishes to share. Get them to go and walk them over to nearby Mission Dolores Park, a mecca of outdoor cannabis consumption with an ever-present sweet and skunky scent to match. Load a bowl or two of your Private Reserve OG and spark your appetite before your meal, and if you need a digestif afterwards, buy a coconut full of coconut water from “the coconut man,” a regular park fixture.

Grab a hotel room or AirBnb for the night in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood—it may be cliché, but the neighborhood was ground zero for hippie culture and cannabis reform as sparked by the Summer of Love . Drop your stuff before heading to the waterfront to visit the Exploratorium , by far the best place in California for elevated adults to marvel over wonders of science and the natural world like they were kids again. Optical illusions, mechanical contraptions, interactive exhibits, video installations—all await you at Pier 15 on the Embarcadero.

(Courtesy of The Exploratorium)

Afterwards, you can walk down to the trippy Musée Mécanique (Pier 45; free admission) to play antique penny arcade games and musical instruments that are extra-fun after a dab. Finish out your young-at-heart afternoon with a round of fantastical Rube Goldberg-inspired mini golf at Urban Putt in the Mission, then spend the evening sipping CBD-and-terpene-infused cocktails and mocktails from the 4:20 menu (runs until 7:20 p.m.) at Flore , itself a cornerstone of cannabis reform since the 1980s.

When you get back to your hotel or AirBnb, pop a capsule or two and drift off to a peaceful night’s sleep that’ll recharge your batteries for tomorrow’s adventures.

You’re headed 202 miles down to South Big Sur for a coastal retreat unlike any other: Treebones Resort . Word to the wise: While Highway 1 is the most stunning way to get there (the two-lane traces the coastline up soaring hills and along the edge of breathtaking cliffs, dropping back to sea level periodically for up-close-and-personal ocean views), sections of it are often closed, so be sure to check for relevant travel advisories before you start your drive—you may need to reroute along the 101.

Treebones offers various glamping options including spectacular yurts, ocean-view campsites, and the wholly unique Human Nest, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like—a cradle of branches and twigs built to cozily accommodate two blissful sleepers. If you want to stay in the Nest, there’s a two-night minimum (and be wary of inclement weather forecasts, as the branches won’t keep wind and rain out); if you’d prefer to head out the next day, book one of the gorgeous wood-frame yurts (we recommend reserving in advance).

Spend your day hiking, ocean kayaking, taking yoga classes, getting a blissful massage, or any combination of the above. Revel in the beauty of Big Sur—there’s no place like it in the nation (or indeed, the world), and no better way to explore it than with plenty of THC in your system. In the evening, watch the sunset blaze coral and gold over a dinner of ultra-fresh sushi at the resort’s on-site restaurant.

Beyond Hearst Castle, it’s another four hours to the heart of LA. For a stay that feels like a splurge without costing a fortune, grab a room at trendy  The Standard DTLA . Drop your bags and walk to ARQADE , a hip art house/production studio/event space that also includes a cannabis-friendly café—the perfect place to load a bowl , roll a blunt , or hit a dab rig . It’s open from noon until 9 p.m. (and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays), and offers VR, board games, an escape room, and plenty of creatively minded company.

Flying high? Time for an afternoon sugar hit. Nearby Bottega Louie is a spun-sugar fantasyland of a pâtisserie, and the rainbow selection of picture-perfect macarons that greets you when you walk in the door is utterly stunning. Spend as long as you want debating which (i.e. how many) flavors to get—the friendly faces behind the counter will never rush you. Furthermore, don’t bother ordering just one: These sweet treats are far more affordable than the Bottega’s interior décor makes then look like they’ll be (and you can snack on whatever you don’t finish later tonight at your hotel). Order enough and you’ll get a gorgeous gift box to take them all home in.

The rooftop pool at The Standard DTLA. (Courtesy of The Standard Hotel)

Once the sun sets, you’re headed back to The Standard for its perfect built-in night out, at the L.A.-AF rooftop bar. Topiaries sheared into whimsical shapes dance in a row along the roof, and DJ-spun mixes pulse betwixt the towering skyscrapers that surround the space. In general, a high-energy, majority Millennial crowd fills the space, sipping crafty cocktails, playing ping pong, savoring brews from the AstroTurf-carpeted beer garden, sitting around the glowing sapphire pool, and socializing on poufs and low couches. No one will notice if you snag a vape pen puff or two along the roof’s edge from time to time to stay high all evening.

Depending on when the munchies hit, you can either walk a mile or so (the perfect amount of time for a joint ) to El Cholo , the much-beloved Mexican restaurant that’s been the perfect patio dining option since 1923, or simply take the hotel elevator downstairs and seat yourself at a booth in the 24-hour diner. One last recommendation: Before you check out in the morning, buy yourself a present and snag the dark green Malin + Goetz Cannabis candle from the minibar—it makes for a fantastic thematic souvenir.

(Courtesy of AirBnb)

Upon arrival in the town of Joshua Tree, you’re checking into an Airstream AirBnb (such as The Land Yacht  pictured above—book in advance) right on the border of Joshua Tree National Park. A paradise for high hikers and elevated explorers, the National Park is nevertheless strictly prohibitive of cannabis ( all national parks are ), so we recommend leaving your stash behind before entering the park itself (hence the Airstream). Ready to explore? Pop an edible or two right before you cross the park boundary, and let the effects set in right on time as you immerse yourself in this incredible landscape and all it has to offer.

Want to extend your road trip? Kick things off with our Oregon summer cannabis road trip itinerary . Better yet, tack our Washington itinerary on as well—all three are connectable by way of I-5, and there’s no better way to experience West Coast cannabis culture.
