What You Should Expect During Snorkeling Langkawi at Pulau Payar Marine Park?

Pulau Payar Snorkeling Package | 2024 Promo From As Low As RM380

Snorkeling Langkawi at Pulau Payar Marine Park

Pulau Payar Marine Park is a popular site for Snorkeling Langkawi and diving enthusiasts keen on exploring Langkawi’s undersea action. Just 30km south of the main island, it is about 45 minutes away from the Kuah jetty point and you can take either a catamaran or a speedboat to get here.

Comprising four islands, the largest of which is Pulau Payar, and three smaller isles (Pulau Kaca, Pulau Lembu and Pulau Segantang) this marine park is spread over two nautical miles. None of these islands are inhabited and are strictly regulated by the Fisheries Department of Kedah to maintain their pristine condition.

In addition, One of Pulau Payar Marine Park’s best features is its Coral Garden, a secluded section of the ‘park’ with colourful coral beautifully protected and preserved due to its sheltered waters. Those eager to explore the park will have to obtain permission from the authorities (fishing is strictly prohibited) before venturing into the waters: alternatively you can join a tour group.

The park caters well to tourists with an extensive array of facilities ranging from picnic tables, barbecue pits, gazebos and restrooms set at strategic points throughout the park.

Beach Activities At Pulau Payar Marine Park

Firstly, Once your boat docks at the jetty of Pulau Payar Marine Park, there is an wooden walkway (a narrow boardwalk) that leads to the beach area. There are four small beaches in Pulau Payar. The best is the one to the left. From any of the beaches, you can swim or snorkel.    The water here is calm, sheltered and shallow. The usual water visibility is between 30-50 meters. However, sometimes in the morning the water may become a little murky. There are plenty of harmless sharks (black-tipped) in the waters here.     Even when you snorkel from the beaches and go about 20 meters into the open sea, you can sea baby Black Tipped Sharks. Don't get scared, they never do any harm and shy away when they notice a human being close by. Take an underwater camera so that you can prove to others that you actually swam with the sharks that big.    There are of course many other different kinds of fish that you can see in the waters here including parrot fish, angel fish, dameselfish, the rare rabbitfish, butterflyfish, anemonefish etc. One of the best places to snorkel is under the bridge (jetty) where you can see the maximum number of fish and marine life. This is where you can meet the resident Mr Mustaffa, the giant Barracuda.    Other than swimming and snorkeling from the beach, you can also hand feed baby sharks from a section on the bridge. The authorities don't let you hand feed them from the beach itself because you don't want to after all touch them. They may look cute but do have real teeth. Around noon time, representatives from the Marine Park Administration initiate shark feeding session when you can see them real close from the shore and also participate in feeding.

Snorkeling Langkawi Platform

Langkawi Coral Platform

Langkawi coral is a first coral platform in Malaysia which located in Pulau Payar Marine Park. The coral platform has been shaped to preserve the natural beauty of the marine park and to have a less impact on the fish’s population and local corals.

Moreover, Langkawi Coral will gives you full satisfaction of visiting since whatever you do, sure will have some activities to be done there.  A lot of activities floating like a tiny island in the sea, it fully equipped to help facilitate all the activities done with comfortable staring from scuba diving, snorkeling langkawi , fish watching and coral viewing to sunbathing.

The most famous in Langkawi coral is platform, the ship will stop at the middle of the sea. Enjoy a swim among the schools of fishes and experience an underwater view of a world filled with colorful coral reefs without getting wet on Langkawi Coral’s floating platform equipped with an underwater observation facility

Facilities at Pulau Payar Marines Park

There are toilets and changing rooms available, and also shaded rest areas with benches & tables to have your food. However note that the showers at the changing rooms spray sea water and not fresh water. The marine park beach also has the Marine Park Head Quarter and an exhibition area.    Usually all packages offered by the well known operators include complimentary snorkeling gears (snorkel, mask & life jackets), and dive gears (if you take the dive package). However fins are not allowed in the park for both snorkeling and scuba diving as the marine park follows 'no fins policy'. This is to avoid damaging the corals and fish. Packages also include lunch packs.    Note that the authorities at the park promote Eco Tourism and ensure adequate ecological balance & marine conservation. So you can not collect and take away shells, corals or marine creatures in any form.     During the season, the marine park can get really crowded. This is one of the hot attractions of Langkawi and majority of the tourists target to come here. But unfortunately many do not follow the prohibitory Eco Tourism laws and sadly litter the water area. This happens mostly when the place gets crowded.    However, There are no resorts allowed in Pulau Payar. So the only way for night stay here is by taking prior permission for camping from the Fisheries Department in Alor Setar or their Head office at Kuala Lumpur.

Pulau Payar Marine Park

pulau payar trip

Pulau Payar Marine Park, located 35 km south west of Langkawi, consists of four islands called Pulau Payar, Pulau Kaca, Pulau Lembu, and Pulau Segantang. It is the only diving and snorkelling site on the western coast of Malaysia. The park is about an hour away from the Kuah Jetty, and can only be reached by a tour boat.

pulau payar trip

A hassle-free peek at the marine life is possible by visiting the undersea observation deck at the main platform area. The water here is shallow, and just beneath the surface you will see a colourful metropolis of corals and endangered fish. The coral in Pulau Payar Marine sanctuary are of both hard and soft variety and provide shelter to a large variety of fish. The waters of the marine park are rich with plankton that sustain fish of all sizes. Big eye jacks, puffers and black tipped reef sharks are easily spotted from the platform. To get intimate with the fish, snorkel a bit towards the sea and swim with butterfly fish, damselfish, groupers, parrotfish and angelfish. Shark feeding session in the afternoon is also a good opportunity to get close to shark pups. Head to Pulau Kaca to get away from the crowd and swim near artificial reefs made of sunken trawlers. A diversified array of fish including the mangrove snappers live here. Another popular site for shipwreck diving is Pulau Segantang, about 13 kilometres from Pulau Payar. Here, you can see moray eels, scorpion fish and lion fish.

The average visibility on a clear day is about 30-40 feet, but poor visibility can be an issue during monsoon season when the water gets murky. Coral bleaching has been an issue in the recent years due to the increase in tourism and the rising temperature of the sea water. Therefore, when you are here, please be respectful of the vulnerable marine life and avoid throwing trash or food into the water.

Is Pulau Payar Marine Park Worth a Visit? Yes!

November 24, 2020 by Vanessa Workman Leave a Comment

When it comes to island hopping in Peninsular Malaysia, the state of Kedah has been the king of the hill with their Langkawi archipelago turned UNESCO Global Geopark . Langkawi (also known as the Jewel of Kedah) has 99 islands and islets shrouded in jungle-y mystery and often dotted with white sand beaches and eerie ancient rock formations. But Kedah, beyond the shores of the geopark, has one more jewel to offer visitors and that is Pulau Payar (Payar Island). But Pulau Payar is not just an island, it’s part of a namesake marine park; Pulau Payar Marine Park .

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

Located 35 kilometers south of Langkawi, the Pulau Payar Marine Park consists of four islands; Pulau Kaca , Pulau Lembu , Pulau Segantang and Pulau Payar ; the largest of the four. Pulau Payar Marine Park is protected under Malaysia’s Fisheries Act 1985 and Marine Parks Malaysia Order 1989 . It also has the honor of being the first official marine park in Malaysia, established in 1989.

History of Marine Park Development in Malaysia

People might be surprised to learn that Malaysia has a number of marine parks between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Including more than 40 islands collectively in Peninsular Malaysia alone; all now managed by the Department of Marine Park Malaysia , which was officially established in 2007.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

In the early 1980s, Malaysia recognized the need to protect its coral reef areas after seeing the decline in the county’s marine fishing resources. In 1983, Ex-Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad directed the Ministry of Agriculture’s Department of Fisheries to establish marine parks in the country, which was included in Parts 41 through 45 of the Fisheries Act, 1985.

‘The principal goal of establishing Marine Parks in the country is to protect, conserve and manage in perpetuity representative marine ecosystems of significance, particularly coral reefs and their associated flora and fauna, so that they remain undamaged for future generations. In addition, our aim is to inculcate public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of our marine heritage.’ – Department of Marine Park Malaysia

By 1994, 40 islands were included in protected areas under the umbrella of the Marine Parks Malaysia Order with a buffer zone of two nautical miles seaward from the outermost points of the various islands. Islands included are Terengganu’s Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian Archipelagos, Kedah’s Pulau Payar Archipelago, Pahang’s Pulau Tioman Archipelago, Johor’s Pulau Tinggi Archipelago, and the Federal Territory of Labuan Archipelago . Terengganu’s Pulau Nyireh and Pulau Tenggol were added in 1998.

Borneo Malaysia’s marine parks management is considerably different from Peninsular Malaysia’s. The marine parks of Sabah appear to march to the beat of their own drummer and are apparently managed by Sabah Parks Board of Trustees. Marine parks of Sarawak are managed by the Marine of the National Park & Wildlife Division of the Sarawak Forestry Department.

Never the less, you will find no shortage of marine parks in Malaysia!

Here’s a short video from my trip to Pulau Payar Can subscribe to The Island Drum’s You Tube Channel HERE

Having established that Pulau Payar is the oldest marine park in Malaysia, it’s safe to say they have been through a few learning curves since 1989. And likely made some mistakes, as well as taken a few hits of harsh criticisms along the way. But knowing what I know now about Pulau Payar, I can appreciate the efforts of the Department of Marine Park Malaysia even more.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

Back in 2010, the Department of Marine Park Malaysia closed numerous islands in three states due to coral bleaching, including Pulau Payar. The closure was only from Early July to the end of October, 2010, but at least an action and reassessment was done.

Since that brief closure and reopen time, other areas of Pulau Payar Marine Park have become access limited or temporarily closed in an effort to protect the park. Unfortunately numbers of daily visitors have not been limited. Daily tour groups from both Penang and Langkawi have been consistently visiting the marine park until the 2020 pandemic hit.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

However, in addition to keeping areas closed, other plans are in the works for Pulau Payar, include more aggressive coral restoration efforts and limiting the number of daily visitors. Which I think are both excellent ideas.

My Langkawi Coral Experience

Pulau Payar had been beckoning me for many years, but the price tag to get there and online photos of massive numbers of people was just a tad off-putting. And, to be honest, I can’t say the ‘negative’ reports I had heard and read about helped much either. But finally seeing it for myself? I gotta say, I loved it. It was nothing like I was expecting and it’s an excellent day trip option from Langkawi.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

I went with Langkawi Coral for my first time visit to Pulau Payar Marine Park and I just can’t give enough kudos to these folks. They pay attention to details and have great customer service. I will definitely choose to go with them on future Pulau Payar trips too.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

Right off the bat, from my prior direct booking to check in was smooth sailing. After checking in and getting our identification wrist bands, our tour group for the day was escorted to the Langkawi Coral ferry. We departed right on schedule at 0945.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

I had previously thought that taking a speed boat would be the best way to go to Pulau Payar, but after realizing how far we were actually going (35 kilometers each way), I’m pretty sure that the Langkawi Coral ferry is a much more relaxing option. Easy access toilets can also come in handy when taking long boat journeys too.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

Langkawi Coral guests also have the option to go topside during the ferry ride to and from Pulau Payar. There you can check out the scenic vista, enjoy the sea breeze and take some maritime selfies. It takes about forty-five minutes to get to Pulau Payar Marine Park by ferry.

I would also venture to say that the ferry option would be wheelchair and stroller friendly as would the platform disembark later; making it the best option for the less physically fit, young children and the adventurous handicapped.

Upon arrival, those who were beach bound were shuttled onward to the beach and the rest of us were briefed on the day’s schedule and where to get our snorkeling equipment.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

Langkawi Coral offers two snorkel packages for guests (whether they choose to snorkel or not). The Langkawi Coral Beach Package includes a life jacket, snorkel equipment, a packed lunch and a ride to and from the beach.

I chose the Langkawi Coral Reef Platform Package , which offers full access to both the beach and the reef platform. This includes not only a life jacket and snorkel equipment, but all platform amenities; Glass Bottom Boat Ride , Underwater Viewing Chamber , a platform lifeguard, toilets, and fresh water showers and changing rooms. Additionally, lockers are available for RM20.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

The platform package also includes a simple, but hearty buffet lunch. And an extremely helpful staff. Both packages include insurance and the Pulau Payar Marine Park Conservation Fee, which all marine parks in Malaysia charge visitors.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

To be honest I was mesmerized by the number of fish hanging out around the platform. Likely well-schooled (no pun intended) that the platform is a steady source of food when there are people around; bread crumbs and table scraps. Although there is plenty of room to explore within the roped off ‘public’ reef area, the majority of visitors during my mid-week visit (myself included) were content to just hang out in the waters near the platform.

In a nod to marine conservation, dive fins are no longer allowed (or encouraged) for snorkeling in Pulau Payar Marine Park, which will certainly cuts down on any temptations for visitors to stand on sensitive coral. It may take extra work to finlessly kick your way through the water, but it’s good exercise!

The lunch buffet is served around 12:30. Extra drinks and snacks are also available for purchase at any time. Those on the Platform Package have the option of having the lunch buffet on the platform or ordering a packed lunch for the beach. I highly recommend taking the buffet option, which has plenty of selections to choose from of both Asian and western fare. A vegetarian lunch is also available upon request.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

The buffet is prepared ahead of time and ferried out to the marine park, so if anyone is expecting a 5-star dining experience you will be disappointed. However if you go to Pulau Payar to see loads of fish, have fun in the sun and get fed a decent meal, you’ll be quite happy. I personally had no complaints about the food.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

After lunch, I finally got around to taking a boat to the beach. In hindsight, I regretted not going before lunch as after lunch there was not a lot of time left to explore the beach area before the last pick up from the beach arrived.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

The sand is blindingly white and although the turquoise water was a bit murky from swimmers kicking up sand, it is an idyllic island scenario none the less. One can still stand in waist depth water and see plenty of fish (including sharks), with or without a mask on. Maybe not the most sustainable of practices, but ‘shark feeding’ is a big hit at the beach. I have a healthy respect for sharks of any size and being in the water while they are feeding is not something I consider particularly smart. So do consider watching from afar especially if you have little kids with you.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

As I mentioned earlier, with exception of the main beach, areas of the marine park remain closed as a conservation effort. A few food and drink stalls, shade trees and a lovely beach is the bulk of the Coral Island beach experience. So, if you want to see some fish or just relax and work on your tan, it’s perfect.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

Is the public access coral reef of Pulau Payar Marine Park a National Geographic moment of colorful corals and exotic plant life? No. And if anyone expects that then they watch too many television specials of expensive expeditions to remote corners of the globe.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

A visit to Pulau Payar Marine Park does offer the opportunity to see marine life in their natural habitat to those who want to get wet and to those who prefer to stay out of the water. A unique opportunity not generally offered at other marine parks. Pulau Payar Marine Park is definitely worth a visit!

Pulau Payar Marine Park, Malaysia

I was an invited guest of Langkawi Coral, but my opinions are my own.

Pulau Payar Marine Park

If you are only visiting islands at the west side of the peninsula or are not able to go to visit the islands at the east side due to the monsoon period (which lasts from October till March in that region), then you have the alternative to go to the islands of Langkawi and Penang where you will be able to snorkel around a couple of very small islands. The Pulau Payar Marine Park lies between both islands, a small but marvelous coral area. There are four islands within the marine park, Pulau Payar, Pulau Kaca, Pulau Lembu and Pulau Segantang. Tourists can stay for the day, however it is an uninhabited island and there is no accommodation available on the island. There is a daily tour to Pulau Payar, this tour includes pickup from Penang hotels or hotels in Langkawi. A Pulau Payar snorkeling trip usually lasts a full day.

How to get to Pulau Payar

  • Map of Pulau Payar

Only place to enjoy diving and snorkeling at the western peninsula

It is one of the only locations at the west side of the Malaysian peninsula where you can snorkel and dive. Besides that, you can also feed the fish (e.g. small sharks). However, we do advise not to participate in that, because it is very bad for the fish and eventually it harms the coral as well. The underwater world around the island often attracts very big kinds of fish, because of the enormous amount of algae in the water. When you obtain your PADI diving license on the island of Langkawi you complete your dives within the marine park. The best snorkel location with the marine parks is near 'Coral Garden'. Update: Coral Garden is currently closed to the public to give the coral enough time to restore.

The island is a protected area as the coral has to be preserved. Fishing is absolutely prohibited within the marine park. If you are not going to the east side of the Malaysian peninsula (i.e. Perhentian , Redang or Tioman ) or to the beautiful islands around Borneo during your trip through Malaysia, then this is one of the few places where you can encounter the beauty of a real coral island.

Things to keep in mind when visiting Pulau Payar

The small island group, Pulau Payar has been under a lot of pressure as a result of tourism in the last couple of years. The islands are set up in a very touristy way and there is a chance that you might view the same fish with 20 others. Additionally, there is the issue of 'coral bleaching' due to the high temperature increase of the seawater. As a result, the coral is not in its best shape anymore. Below, please find a few rules to take into account to ensure that Payar does not collapse under the pressures of tourism:

  • Do not feed the fish and do not touch any fish.
  • Keep your waste and do not throw anything into the water.
  • Only use the toilettes.
  • Do not stand on the coral. Wear a life jacket and swim without flippers to prevent yourself from standing on the coral.

Alternative place to dive and snorkel near Langkawi

An alternative location for the snorkel enthusiast who is only visiting the Langkwai Island is a boat trip to the Thai island of Koh Lipe. This beautiful small island lies about 30 minutes away from Langkawi. The boat to Koh Lipe leaves at the Telaga Harbor on the northwest side of the island. This is one of the few Thai islands that you can easily reach from Langkawi as a tourist. It is great to snorkel and dive near Koh Lipe. However, the island has a rainy season (monsoon period) between May and September. Usually, a trip to Koh Lipe is suggested to travelers who visit Malaysia between November and February and who are not able to go to the beautiful tropical snorkel islands, such as Perhentian, Redang and Tioman due to the severe monsoon period on the east side of the Malaysian peninsula.

On Penang and Langkawi you can book a trip to Payar at your hotel, resort or at the small travel agencies. Don't be surprised about the enormous cost. A trip to Pulau Payar will cost around RM250 at the tour offices at Penang and Langkawi. This includes pick up/drop off at your hotel (on Penang or Langkawi), lunch and the use of snorkel equipment. From Penang, it will take the boat 2 hours to get to the island, from Langkawi about 45 minutes. You will not be able to go to Payar by yourself as private transport is not possible; the island can only be visited as part of a tour.

We are avid snorkelers and were very disappointed with this tour. Having purchased tours via Viator before, we thought we would enjoy ourselves. It is a misnomer to consider this site a marine park. After a two-hour trip in the hull of a dilapidated ferry, we were escorted from the Langkawi Coral onto a platform at 10:30 am across from the beach and could not reach the beach until 1:00pm when a small boat operated by LC would take us to a floating pier to walk to the beach. If the floating pier were attached to the platform, we could have walked directly to the beach independently. The beach is so small that it can not accommodate many people. So, we were held captive until 1:00 pm while we sat and watched other tourists arrive and were taken directly to the floating pier and stayed on the beach. The amount of tourists on the beach have to be controlled and is what is known as crowd control. Unfortunate for us, we were not scheduled to be taken to the pier until 1:00pm and depart at 2:00pm - an hour!! We paid 144 to waste our time. Also, the lunch that was included was horrible! Malaysia is known as a gastronomic paradise but LC's food was an inherent disappointment too. Why is Viator offering this excursion. The company is not acting in the best interest of the tourist. Shame on VIATOR!

The snorkeling experience is just ok. Very crowded place with about 300 people trying to snorkel and scuba dive at the same venue. No instructors available incase we have any queries regarding snorkeling/diving. Not many species of fishes and the corals are all dead. Beach is average! Overall i would not rate this as a worthwhile experience...not worth the money at all

This tour was amazing!

After reading such positive reviews on here, we thought this trip was a must do when in Penang. We were not disappointed. There were lots of fish and the water was crystal clear. It was busy, but we never felt too crowded. It is a long way from Penang, but worth the day trip.

very nice trip. Clear water and lots of fish!

Awesome trip!!

Pulau Payar Marine Park

pulau payar trip

The Pulau Payar Marine Park is a popular destination for snorkelling and diving. Deemed as Malaysia’s oldest marine park sanctuary, it is comprised of four islands - Pulau Kaca, Pulau Lembu, Pulau Segantang, and Pulau Payar, which is the biggest among the four. All the islands are uninhabited and none of them offer any accommodation to visitors.

The wide range of coral reef, including Tubastrea Micrantha and Semi-Precious Antipathes, represents the sanctuary’s uniqueness, with various species of exotic fishes roaming around the area, such as barracudas, clownfish, horse-eyed jacks and black-tipped reef sharks.

One of the top dive sites in Pulau Payar is the Coral Garden, a secluded section of the park that offers the best spot for diving enthusiasts to be in awe with the rich colourful corals and magnificent sea creatures. The park also provides an observation area in the floating platform for those who don’t want to get wet.

Apart from diving and snorkelling, swimming in the calm sheltered waters is also a popular activity. Other unique activity there includes baby shark feeding, which gives visitors a chance to get up close with the adorable creatures. Besides that, the park also offers hiking trails to those who want to enjoy a non-marine activity.

pulau payar trip

"...Although uninhabited, the marine park still provides a list of amenities such as picnic tables, barbecue pits, gazebos, and restrooms for the public – making it an ideal holiday destination for the whole family."

As a marine conservation area, Pulau Payar Marine Park promotes ecotourism to ensure a long-standing ecological balance of marine life. Visitors should refrain from removing any corals, shells or any marine organisms from the ecosystem. Besides that, fishing is also prohibited; and during baby shark feeding, visitors must make sure to keep a distance and refrain from touching the baby sharks.

How to get there

The Pulau Payar Marine Park is located just 30 kilometres from the main island of Langkawi. From the Kuah jetty point, it takes a 45-minute speedboat ride to reach the marine park.

Belmond Brought Back Its Most Thrilling Trains Through Asia – Here's What to Expect

It's a once-in-a-lifetime trip indeed.

Belmond is known for providing travelers with the utmost luxury and a sense of adventure you can't find anywhere but on the rails. And finally, after a four-year hiatus, it's bringing back perhaps its most adventurous trip ever.

In February, Belmond brought back the Eastern & Oriental Express for new journeys that will meander through Southeast Asia. The company is offering four trips that each last for three thrilling nights, including some incredible stops along the way.

The first is its Wild Malaysia trip, with travel dates still available in July through October, which departs from Singapore, making its way north through the "lush jungles of Malaysia," the company explains on its website.

"Revel in your luxury overnight train ride as you experience a wide variety of excursion options, including a wildlife discovery in Taman Negara National Park , joining us in our mission to support efforts to safeguard the endangered Malayan tiger," Belmond adds. And, in case you were unaware, the national park is home to everything from tigers to elephants, rhinos to leopards, and even some beautiful macaques.

Then there's its Essence of Malaysia trip with dates throughout November, which again departs from Singapore and heads to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and Penang. On this trip, Belmond promises excursions to snorkel in the crystalline waters, plenty of time to explore the islands, and even cultural tours so guests feel more informed of their surroundings.

Travelers who want to find the festive spirit will surely do just that with the Festive Malaysia trip, which departs in December and travels through Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and Penang. It includes an excursion to Langkawi's Pulau Payar Marine Park for a picnic, a Christmas celebration stop in Penang Island with a choice of cultural tours, and a "celebratory evening with Champagne, exquisite cuisine, and fabulous entertainment," the company added.

Finally, travelers can choose to ring in 2025 in style with the Malasyia Celebration train, which travels from Singapore through Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and Penang on New Year's Eve. It, too, includes a picnic stop, cultural tours, and plenty of bubbly.

On every journey, guests can expect nothing but the best in the train's 15 cherry wood cabins, each decked out in Malay-inspired decor, along with equally stunning common spaces, including the restaurant car with food by chef André Chiang. Guests are also welcome to spend their time in the observation car, watching the world go by, or spend the evening in the piano bar, listening to music and dancing until they can't dance anymore. Though, really, on a journey like this, that may be until the sun comes up.

See all the details and book your room at https://www.belmond.com .

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
