One of the most important rock bands of the last thirty years, Rage Against the Machine hit the scene hard as one of the defining acts of the 1990s, and continues to make an impact to this day.

Lead guitarist Tom Morello, singer Zack de le Rocha, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk got together in the Los Angeles area back in 1991. Introducing a style heavily steeped in heavy metal, punk, funk and rap, the band quickly caught the ears of fans with its initial twelve-song self-titled, self-released demo cassette. Belting out hard grooves with passionate political protest lyrics, the band laid down who they would be from the get-go.

Touring in support of bands like Porno for Pyros and Suicidal Tendencies, Rage Against the Machine scored a label deal with Epic Records, with a second release of its self-titled debut album. Given an unusual amount of creative control, the band did not hold back their unapologetic protest sound. The band even made the self-immolation of Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức, a self-sacrificial act of defiance against his oppressive government, into the cover image of their first LP. The record went on to achieve triple platinum certification, reaching 45 on the Billboard 200 charts.

The following year, Rage Against the Machine kept climbing in popularity. Supporting House of Pain in early 1993, followed by appearances at Lollapalooza, the band’s following quickly swelled. In addition to its many tours over the following years, the band stayed true to its political activism by appearing in a series of benefits and protest shows. The band headlined the Rock for Choice campaign and organized a show in support of imprisoned Native American activist Leonard Peltier. In 1994, it recorded the track “Year of tha Boomerang” for the John Singleton film Higher Learning, which was about college racism.

Amidst many rumors of being on the verge of breaking up, Rage Against the Machine proved the naysayers wrong with the release of 1996’s Evil Empire. Its long-anticipated second album debuted on the top spot of the Billboard 200 charts. Its appearance on Saturday Night Live in support of the record was cut short when the band hung inverted American flags from its amps in protest of the show’s host, Steve Forbes. Rage also played at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco that year alongside fellow performers Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins, and many more.

In 1997, the band opened for a U2 benefit concert, then headlined its own tour later that year with bands like Wu-Tang Clan and The Roots supporting. By 1999, its next full length album release would drop. The Battle of Los Angeles once again debuted on the number one spot of the Billboard 200, quickly going double platinum. That same year, Rage played in Woodstock ’99, and their track “Wake Up” appeared on the soundtrack for the film The Matrix.

In 2000, Zack de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine due to differences, causing the band to break up. Despite this, another record came out a few months later. Renegades featured all cover songs of a wide array of acts such as The Rolling Stones, Cypress Hill and Bruce Springsteen. The remaining three members formed the group Audioslave with former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell. Audioslave released three albums before disbanding in 2007.

In 2007, Rage Against the Machine reunited for a performance at Coachella. A small tour followed in 2008 at European and American festivals. For the following years, more shows and side projects kept hopes alive for a new Rage album. But the members stopped playing together around 2010.

In 2019, the band announced its first full-throated tour in 20 years. The tour, planned over the course of 2020, was unfortunately cut short due to the Covid pandemic. Back on track for 2022, the tour was derailed again when de la Rocha suffered a severe leg injury onstage. Regardless, the band is poised to return to the road after the singer recovers.

Live reviews

I went to several Rage Against the Machine concerts in the early 2000s and went to the show at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2011 after the band got back together and all I can say is, “Wow!” This band is utterly incredible live.

They bring an energy to the stage that very few bands can match. The concerts are not about distracting the audience with flash stage sets, illusions, or anything else that some bands do. Lead singer Zack de la Rocha demands your attention with his stage presence and vocals. He growls, screams, and sings in a way that few vocalists can. It’s incredible that, after almost two decades of this, he still has any voice left.

Tom Morello is probably one of the best guitarists performing today. Witnessing him live is a treat. Just watch his hands and how they dance over the guitar strings. It is hard to believe that a human being can make those kinds of sounds come from a guitar with only two hands!

The crowd has been electric at all of the shows I have been to. When you go in, expect to dance, jump around, and maybe even get snatched up and sent crowd surfing. There is no standing around at a Rage concert. Every song is fast, aggressive, and electrifying.

When I saw them in 2011 they played for almost two hours and covered every major song in their catalogue. The crowd ate it up and it felt like neither the band nor the crowd wanted to leave the venue. They are currently on hiatus again, but when they reunite and go on another tour, they are an act that cannot be missed.

Report as inappropriate

The only time I seen RAtM was in the early 90's. I was only like 15 or so. Not my first concert, maybe my 7th or so. Not a stadium venue, nor a nightclub venue. More of an antique theater venue. They were co-headliners with Cypress Hill with Funkdoobiest as openers. I don't remember a lot from that day, do to the high amount of...well, high. I do recall I had a great time. Never heard bass notes hit so hard and loud before, even from friend's beaters stuffed with battery killing dual 15's or what have you. The other thing I really recall was trying to comprehend how the guitarist was creating those sounds. How unconventional it seemed. It was experimental, yet held rhythm and melody. It just meshed so well with the rest of the soundscape, yet was different. New. I was lightly familiar with Hendrix by then. Seen the Woodstock VHS, and understood he took the guitar to unexplored territory. It felt like that's what I was witnessing as Morello performed. When you listen to them with headphones or in your car, you don't fully comprehend how some of those sounds are created. Seeing him yank the plug out of the jack of his instrument, then using it somewhat like a cello bow to make the noises you hear on the record was damn impressive. Other than that, I know there was a lot of energy exuded that night. Wish I could remember more. Though that might come flooding back to me when I see them next week in Cleveland nearly 30 years later.

I am grateful to have personally witnessed the high-octane holistic medicinal ballistic-spiked pure rushes of adrenaline Rage Against The Machine live at Fair Field in Dallas opening for U2 on their North American 'Pop' tour which also featured the Chelsea FC-supporting, internationally renowned maestro producer & iconic DJ, Paul Oakenfold. Most definitely amongst the best shows I've had the great pleasure to have experienced!

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

Looking for more GRAMMYs news? The 2024 GRAMMY nominations are here!

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

10 Essential Facts To Know About GRAMMY-Winning Rapper J. Cole

killer mike road to 'michael'

Photo: Jonathan Mannion

Killer Mike Says His New Album, 'Michael,' Is "Like A Prodigal Son Coming Home"

'Michael,' Killer Mike's first solo album in more than a decade drops June 16. He spoke to GRAMMY.com about creating a portrait of the Southern rap cyphers, Sunday church services, and barbershop discourse that shaped who he is today.

After more than 20 years in hip-hop — as one-half of the supergroup Run The Jewels and also as a solo artist — the Atlanta rapper Killer Mike is ready to make what he calls "a generational statement."

Born Michael Render, the activist rapper's statement comes in the form of his personal "origin story": a 14-song solo album called Michael . The album, Killer Mike’s sixth solo effort, drops June 16 and follows 2012’s R.A.P. Music .   In support of the new record, he's touring 19 U.S. cities through Aug. 5.

"I’m one of the best rappers on the face of the earth, and that is authentic. Go to the records. My verses have proved it," Render, 48, told GRAMMY.com. "I’m tired of sitting and waiting for people to say it for me. I’m not waiting, I’m doing it now. My run matters. I’m not gonna die with a woulda been coulda been eulogy."

Michael stands in contrast to the big, bombastic (and less personal) vibe of Run The Jewels, who have released four albums since forming in 2013. While Render's solo outings have always been a mix of bravado and personal, his latest is particularly deep and insightful, dealing  with the death of his mother, and his life growing up in the predominantly Black neighborhood Collier Heights, Atlanta.

"There is a character behind Killer Mike that is a whole human being that I’ve always wanted people to meet and introduce so they can understand the nuance of why I am," Render said during an event at SXSW 2023 . "It is about helping other human beings understand that I share an experience with you, that you can meet me at, that transcends color, that transcends class, that transcends geographic location, and I meet you right at your humanity."

On Michael , Render puts his guard down. He allows himself to grieve the death of his mother and apologize for selling drugs as a teenager. Throughout the autobiographical album, Render paints a portrait of the southern rap cyphers, Sunday church services, and barbershop discourse that shaped who he is today.

"That Killer Mike character was invented when I was 9. I just wanted to be an MC, and Killer Mike was like me being a superhero," Render tells GRAMMY.com. "But when you hear me talking about my mother, I’m empty now. It’s not sad, but it’s about missing and wanting."

Render’s parents were teenagers when he was born, so he was raised in part by his grandparents in Collier Heights, Atlanta. Render credits the culture of his community with shaping who is today.

"I didn’t grow up with insecurities about race, I grew up in a Black majority," he tells GRAMMY.com. "The closest I got to white people growing up was watching Bob Ross or 'The Wonder Years' on TV. But all my real heroes looked like me."

Render says he never felt inhibited by his Blackness, because Blackness was celebrated in Collier Heights. His community introduced him to Black intellectuals like James Baldwin and Langston Hughes, who also celebrated Blackness. It never occurred to Render to not pursue hip-hop or politics or activism — and he never doubted that he could be an artist or MC.

He first rapped on Atlanta-based hip-hop group Outkast ’s 2000 album Stankonia , and launched a solo career soon after. In the 2000s, his songs landed on Billboard charts and the EA Sports "Madden NFL 2004" football video game. Render also did voice over work during the 2000s for Adult Swim and appeared in films like Idlewild and ATL. He guest-rapped on Outkast’s 2003 double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below , which was nominated for six golden gramophones at the 2004 GRAMMYs and won three, including Album Of The Year.

Two very important relationships forged in the 2010s have done much to shape Render’s trajectory since: one with producer and rapper El-P (the other half of Run The Jewels), the other with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

El-P is essentially the yin to Killer Mike’s yang. El-P produced Render's previous solo records, and the two have been collaborating ever since; Killer Mike has called their relationship a " marriage made in heaven ." Run The Jewels has toured with Rage Against The Machine and Lorde , opened for Jack White at Madison Square Garden, been nominated for a GRAMMY Award, and won NME’s Best International Band award in 2018. Rolling Stone called Run The Jewels "brash" and added , "If there were a GRAMMY for Most Creative Ways to Say 'We’re the Best,' these guys would win it, or take it by gunpoint."

Render’s political activism kicked into high gear in 2015, first with lectures at NYU and MIT on police brutality, for-profit jails, and racism in America. He made a last-minute — and ultimately unsuccessful — run for a Georgia state representative seat, and he forged an unlikely public friendship with then-presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders. Render told reporters that he and Sanders were "two angry radical guys, one 74 and white, one 40 and Black, finding common ground."

Render took his politics and activism much further. He co-founded an online banking system for Black and Latinx communities alongside former Atlanta mayor and civil rights leader Andrew Young, and has written op-eds in response to the police killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and the Baltimore uprisings in response to Freddie Gray’s death . On the 2019 Netflix show, "Trigger Warning," Render explored notions of land ownership, gangs, education, and consumerism.

All of his experiences — as a child of the South, as a rapper, and as a political thinker — inform the new album.

"Remember when Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote ' Letter to My Son '? People got a glimpse into Blackhood that wasn’t about absentee fatherhood and other cliches," Render tells GRAMMY.com. "Similarly, my album, even if you haven’t lived my life, it gives you a chance to be a voyeur, and that’s important."

Michael takes its time to unfold; personal subject matter unfolds verse after verse, over laid-back tempos executive produced by No I.D . Somber music provides a bed for Render and guests — among them, Andre 3000 , Young Thug, Future , Ty Dolla $ign , Blxst, Curren$y, and Mozzy —  to stretch out on. Slightly more aggressive, urgent-sounding songs like opening track "Down By Law" and "Talkin Dat SHIT!," which appears later in the album, are buffered by tunes that could uplift a church congregation.

"It’s imperative that I get that out and introduce people to this buck-toothed kid who grew up with hip-hop, out of wedlock fatherhood," Render says. "This record is like a prodigal son coming home. It’s my generational statement. If August Wilson was writing a rap album, this would be his 'Fences.'"

2022 In Review: 5 Trends That Defined Rock

Our concept of and interest in various forms of rock is expanding. Whatever rock is, it’s not dead, and GRAMMY.com has rounded up five trends that attest to the strong pulse of rock music in 2022.

Can rock 'n' roll be defined as the loud blues- and guitar-based stylings purveyed by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Greta Van Fleet ? Perhaps it's the smart, Brit-punk energy of Idles , or the lush new wave-alt-rock stylings of Phoenix? Or maybe rock is really in the grooves of stoner/doom band Windhand, or classic thunder of NWOBHM icons Iron Maiden ?

In a word, yes.

Established radio formats and charts have long organized and codified an ever-increasing amount of bands, artists and songs. But that organization is a trap, making it necessary to divide rock  — sometimes randomly and incorrectly — into pigeon holes. Terrestrial and satellite radio and streaming service playlists remain divided, creating categories such as active rock, classic rock, or Adult Alternative. Yet these categories inevitably leave out key bands and songs, or include questionable entries.

In reality, listeners aren’t bound to genre as in the past. Today’s music world is proof positive that as lines blur, our concept of and interest in various forms of rock is expanding. An arena might see the fans at a Rage Against The Machine or Ghost show coming back on a different night to see Harry Styles or Rhianna .

The colloquial expression "I know it when I see it" (first used as a threshold test for obscenity in a 1964 Supreme Court case!) could also be applied to an attempt to define rock. Whatever rock is, it’s not dead, and these five trends that attest to the strong pulse of rock music in 2022.

Girl Power Makes A Comeback

Although powerful women like Lizzo and Lady Gaga top the pop charts — female representation is more scarce in the higher echelons of the rock world. While Lzzy Hale of Halestorm and Taylor Momsen of the Pretty Reckless play with the boys at the big venues, a new wave of rock bands featuring women and all-female bands are bubbling up, claiming their power.

From Los Angeles comes punk-glam-pop-rock powerhouse lineup Starcrawler, fronted by bold changeling Arrow De Wilde. On the darker City of Angels tip is the heavy charm of "satanic doo-wop" band Twin Temple, who made major inroads opening arena shows for Ghost. Also making noise from SoCal are garage-rock trio L.A. Witch, self-described "California doom boogie" band Death Valley Girls, disarming old-soul singer Lauren Ruth Ward, punk singer/guitarist Suzi Moon, and a host of other creatively bold women.

NYC is home to the firebrand vocalists of SuSu (Liza Colby, Kia Warren) and Woodstock, NY birthed fuzzy punk weirdos the Bobby Lees. Elsewhere, Australia's  Amyl & The Sniffers bring propulsive, in-your-face songs like "Guided by Angels" and ‘Hertz." Other shining lights include former Melvins collaborator and bilingual powerhouse Teri Gender Bender, plus plenty of young women making noise, like Pinkshift. While punk schoolgirls the Linda Lindas owe more to X than the Runaways, their cohort gives hope that the kids are alright.

Classics Rock The Small Screen

Rock, mainstream and otherwise, helped make some of the coolest television shows even better in 2022. " Stranger Things " gave the 36-year-old Metallica song " Master of Puppets " new life among a younger crowd. (During their Lollapalooza set, Metallica paid tribute to the sci-fi show, and jammed with actor Joseph Quinn backstage.)

The Cramps’ goth-kitsch stylings made an appearance on TV sets via Tim Burton’s "Wednesday." The titular Wednesday Addams character danced her way into weird-girl hall of fame with the lo-fi legends’ 1981 version of "Goo Goo Muck." (And let’s not forget Ms. Addams' stellar cello version of the Stones’ "Paint It Black.")

The psycho-billy/horror-punk track was streamed on-demand over 2 million times in the U.S. — a more than 8,650 percent increase from the average 47 weeks before this year, Billboard reported . While it’s not quite Kate Bush -in-"Stranger Things"-numbers, it’s a nice bump that indicates a new generation of listeners for the wild and wooly lo-fi legends.

Other 2022 small-screen rock surprises include the sci-fi German epic period drama 1899 , which uses a cover of Jefferson Airplane ’s "White Rabbit" as its theme music. In an interesting anachronistic approach, the surreal period show uses songs that wouldn’t be created for more than six decades. The classic rock cuts include "Child in Time" by Deep Purple, Echo and the Bunnymen’s "The Killing Moon" and Black Sabbath ’s "The Wizard." The sometimes-subtle song use certainly led to Shazams from kids and cheers from older folks.

Festivals Continue To Diversify

Once upon a time (not that long ago!) Ozzfest and Family Values were the "metal" festivals, Lollapalooza ruled the alternative nation, and rarely would the twain meet. (In a nod to the times, Ozzfest held a free, online-only virtual 2022 version that didn’t exactly draw raves from rock fans.) But 2022 saw the continuation of a sea change, with heaviness becoming the common denominator in a variety of festivals.

As demonstrated by Metallica at Lollapalooza 2022, and Nine Inch Nails and Slipknot billed alongside KISS and Red Hot Chili Peppers at the four-day Louder Than Life fest in Kentucky, sub-genres of industrial, metal, glam and alt-funk are meshing with ever-increasing ease. At Psycho Las Vegas, thrash band Suicidal Tendencies were billed alongside Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, while Wu-Tang Rapper GZA headlined a night that also featured black metal group Mayhem.

Vegas was also a destination in 2022 for the inaugural ‘90s and ‘early-2000s When We Were Young Festival , which served up nostalgia (and a few contemporary acts) from 64 of the biggest names in pop-punk, emo and hardcore. The sold-out event featured performances by My Chemical Romance, Avril Lavigne , AFI and Dashboard Confessional — acts which, back in the day, were often seen as reflecting separate subgenres.

Diverse rock festivals will continue in 2023 with the inaugural Sick New World festival. Set for May, the festival will feature bands once in the "nu metal"-plus genre — such as System Of A Down , Korn, Deftones and Incubus — alongside more diverse groups like Evanescence , GRAMMY-nominated hardcore hitmakers Turnstile , Chevelle, Mr. Bungle, Placebo, Spiritbox, and the Sisters of Mercy.

A Reignited Rage

Rage Against The Machine were one of the bigger bands that reunited for a tour in 2022 — joining the ranks of Pantera , the Mars Volta , Biohazard, Yellowcard, God Forbid, Roxy Music , the Gaslight Anthem, Taproot, and Sunny Day Real Estate.

But their tour was a long time coming. Rage first announced dates for a reunion tour in 2020   — their first full-length world jaunt in 20 years — but were sidelined by COVID. As the pandemic  raged on, racial and political unrest gripped America and the world, making Rage’s political musical messages in songs like "Killing in the Name" as relevant as ever.

The bright side? Rage’s self-titled debut (which celebrated its 30th anniversary in November) jumped back on to the Billboard 200 charts. So when the quartet played their first concert in 11 years on July 9, 2022 in East Troy, Wisconsin, hopes were high — and fan expectations were more than met. Yet two days after the tour began, singer Zach De La Rocha injured his leg; one month later, they canceled the European leg of their tour on doctor’s orders, and the remaining shows on the 2023 North American leg of the tour were scuttled due to the severity of de la Rocha's injury.

Rage closed things out with an incendiary three-night stand at Madison Square Garden beginning Aug. 11. De La Rocha was carried onstage by crew members and sang seated on an amp — but he brought the noise.

Backing Tracks Get The Spotlight

As metal and rock stalwarts continue to perform into their 60s and 70s ( Mick Jagger turns 80 in 2023), fans still demand that their heroes sound like they did in their heyday, so it’s likely they might need some assistance. While it’s been a not-so-hidden secret that Ozzy used singer Robert Mason, hidden offstage, to supplement his vocals, bands like Aerosmith make backing tracks less of a secret, using singing keyboard players.

In October, a Twitter war began after Falling in Reverse canceled an Illinois festival gig, citing lost laptops. Reverse's Ronnie Radke posted an explanatory video message on TikTok where he said the band had "no other option" to cancel, because "as a band in 2022, you need your laptops. It's like driving a car without an engine."

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx jumped online to agree with the use of backing tracks, but Sirius XM DJ/author Eddie Trunk was astonished. "First I heard about this I thought it was a joke to wind me up. How much longer are fans, promoters , media, just going to accept the epidemic of live rock shows… not really being live?"

Former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach, a veteran of Broadway, concurred with Trunk, while Radke tweeted at the metal DJ, writing: "you wanna talk hella s— about laptops but go watch kiss lip sync, Steven Tyler plays the piano then half way through the song he stands on top of piano while it sill [sic] plays yet here we are acting like they all don't use tracks you f—ing idiot."

Blackie Lawless, whose 40-year celebration tour with metal band W.A.S.P. earned rave reviews, admitted to using backing tracks. "If I'm a fan and I'm coming to a show, I want that thing to sound as good as it can," he said during a fan meet and greet that was posted on YouTube ."When we go into a studio — and let me clarify that statement; that's me singing — we do choruses, we double, triple, quadruple the vocals," he said. "When I listened to live YouTube [recordings of our shows] and we weren't doing that, it sounded thin. When we started supplementing it, it sounded better.

"If I'm a fan and I'm coming to a show, I want that thing to sound as good as it can," he continued. "There are other bands — the QUEENs of the world — they cannot duplicate 24 vocals at one time. That's what they do on those records. If you want it to sound like those records, you've gotta have some help."

Even if Falling in Reverse got blowback from peers, their transparency is becoming the new norm. It brings the fans closer to their heroes, mere mortals who struggle with addiction, have personal lives, and occasionally use backing tracks.

A Guide To Modern Funk For The Dance Floor: L'Imperatrice, Shiro Schwarz, Franc Moody, Say She She & Moniquea

James Brown changed the sound of popular music when he found the power of the one and unleashed the funk with "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Today, funk lives on in many forms, including these exciting bands from across the world.

It's rare that a genre can be traced back to a single artist or group, but for funk, that was James Brown . The Godfather of Soul coined the phrase and style of playing known as "on the one," where the first downbeat is emphasized, instead of the typical second and fourth beats in pop, soul and other styles. As David Cheal eloquently explains, playing on the one "left space for phrases and riffs, often syncopated around the beat, creating an intricate, interlocking grid which could go on and on." You know a funky bassline when you hear it; its fat chords beg your body to get up and groove.

Brown's 1965 classic, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," became one of the first funk hits, and has been endlessly sampled and covered over the years, along with his other groovy tracks. Of course, many other funk acts followed in the '60s, and the genre thrived in the '70s and '80s as the disco craze came and went, and the originators of hip-hop and house music created new music from funk and disco's strong, flexible bones built for dancing.

Legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins learned the power of the one from playing in Brown's band, and brought it to George Clinton , who created P-funk, an expansive, Afrofuturistic , psychedelic exploration of funk with his various bands and projects, including Parliament-Funkadelic . Both Collins and Clinton remain active and funkin', and have offered their timeless grooves to collabs with younger artists, including Kali Uchis , Silk Sonic , and Omar Apollo; and Kendrick Lamar , Flying Lotus , and Thundercat , respectively.

In the 1980s, electro-funk was born when artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Egyptian Lover began making futuristic beats with the Roland TR-808 drum machine — often with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box. A key distinguishing factor of electro-funk is a de-emphasis on vocals, with more phrases than choruses and verses. The sound influenced contemporaneous hip-hop, funk and electronica, along with acts around the globe, while current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and even Egyptian Lover himself keep electro-funk alive and well.

Today, funk lives in many places, with its heavy bass and syncopated grooves finding way into many nooks and crannies of music. There's nu-disco and boogie funk, nodding back to disco bands with soaring vocals and dance floor-designed instrumentation. G-funk continues to influence Los Angeles hip-hop, with innovative artists like Dam-Funk and Channel Tres bringing the funk and G-funk, into electro territory. Funk and disco-centered '70s revival is definitely having a moment, with acts like Ghost Funk Orchestra and Parcels , while its sparkly sprinklings can be heard in pop from Dua Lipa , Doja Cat , and, in full "Soul Train" character, Silk Sonic . There are also acts making dreamy, atmospheric music with a solid dose of funk, such as Khruangbin ’s global sonic collage.

There are many bands that play heavily with funk, creating lush grooves designed to get you moving. Read on for a taste of five current modern funk and nu-disco artists making band-led uptempo funk built for the dance floor. Be sure to press play on the Spotify playlist above, and check out GRAMMY.com's playlist on Apple Music , Amazon Music and Pandora .

Say She She

Aptly self-described as "discodelic soul," Brooklyn-based seven-piece Say She She make dreamy, operatic funk, led by singer-songwriters Nya Gazelle Brown, Piya Malik and Sabrina Mileo Cunningham. Their '70s girl group-inspired vocal harmonies echo, sooth and enchant as they cover poignant topics with feminist flair.

While they’ve been active in the New York scene for a few years, they’ve gained wider acclaim for the irresistible music they began releasing this year, including their debut album, Prism . Their 2022 debut single "Forget Me Not" is an ode to ground-breaking New York art collective Guerilla Girls, and " Norma " is their protest anthem in response to the news that Roe vs. Wade could be (and was) overturned. The band name is a nod to funk legend Nile Rodgers , from the "Le freak, c'est chi" exclamation in Chic's legendary tune "Le Freak."

Moniquea 's unique voice oozes confidence, yet invites you in to dance with her to the super funky boogie rhythms. The Pasadena, California artist was raised on funk music; her mom was in a cover band that would play classics like Aretha Franklin’ s "Get It Right" and Gladys Knight ’s "Love Overboard." Moniquea released her first boogie funk track at 20 and, in 2011, met local producer XL Middelton — a bonafide purveyor of funk. She's been a star artist on his MoFunk Records ever since, and they've collabed on countless tracks, channeling West Coast energy with a heavy dose of G-funk, sunny lyrics and upbeat, roller disco-ready rhythms.

Her latest release is an upbeat nod to classic West Coast funk, produced by Middleton, and follows her February 2022 groovy, collab-filled album, On Repeat .

Shiro Schwarz

Shiro Schwarz is a Mexico City-based duo, consisting of Pammela Rojas and Rafael Marfil, who helped establish a modern funk scene in the richly creative Mexican metropolis. On "Electrify" — originally released in 2016 on Fat Beats Records and reissued in 2021 by MoFunk — Shiro Schwarz's vocals playfully contrast each other, floating over an insistent, upbeat bassline and an '80s throwback electro-funk rhythm with synth flourishes.

Their music manages to be both nostalgic and futuristic — and impossible to sit still to. 2021 single "Be Kind" is sweet, mellow and groovy, perfect chic lounge funk. Shiro Schwarz’s latest track, the joyfully nostalgic "Hey DJ," is a collab with funkstress Saucy Lady and U-Key.

L'Impératrice

L'Impératrice (the empress in French) are a six-piece Parisian group serving an infectiously joyful blend of French pop, nu-disco, funk and psychedelia. Flore Benguigui's vocals are light and dreamy, yet commanding of your attention, while lyrics have a feminist touch.

During their energetic live sets, L'Impératrice members Charles de Boisseguin and Hagni Gwon (keys), David Gaugué (bass), Achille Trocellier (guitar), and Tom Daveau (drums) deliver extended instrumental jam sessions to expand and connect their music. Gaugué emphasizes the thick funky bass, and Benguigui jumps around the stage while sounding like an angel. L’Impératrice’s latest album, 2021’s Tako Tsubo , is a sunny, playful French disco journey.

Franc Moody

Franc Moody 's bio fittingly describes their music as "a soul funk and cosmic disco sound." The London outfit was birthed by friends Ned Franc and Jon Moody in the early 2010s, when they were living together and throwing parties in North London's warehouse scene. In 2017, the group grew to six members, including singer and multi-instrumentalist Amber-Simone.

Their music feels at home with other electro-pop bands like fellow Londoners Jungle and Aussie act Parcels. While much of it is upbeat and euphoric, Franc Moody also dips into the more chilled, dreamy realm, such as the vibey, sultry title track from their recently released Into the Ether .

After bumping from 2020 to summer 2021, the Zack de la Rocha-led lyrical bomb-throwers will finally take the stage starting July 9 with a kick-off show at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, before making their way across North America with stops in Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and a five-night stand in New York.

The dates will then pick up again in early 2023 with another round of shows beginning with a Feb. 22 gig at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico. That run of gigs will keep the band on the road through a planned two-night stand in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena in early April.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE 's appearance at this year's Coachella was first revealed in November when an Instagram account with the handle "rageagainstthemachine" shared a list of 2020 dates.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE last played together in 2011 at L.A. Rising and has resisted calls for a reunion, with vocalist Zach De La Rocha previously believed to be the lone holdout. Guitarist Tom Morello and his fellow RAGE bandmates Tim Commerford (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums) have since teamed up with PUBLIC ENEMY 's Chuck D. and CYPRESS HILL 's B-Real in the similarly styled PROPHETS OF RAGE .

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE recorded three original studio albums and one set of covers before breaking up in 2000. The group reformed in 2007 but only played sporadic gigs and never a full tour. Morello said in 2012, "We'd have to agree to go on one. Once a year, the band meets and very seriously discusses and turns down awesome offers to tour the world."

Rage Against the Machine

Rage Against the Machine ‘s reunion tour is no longer five stops long… as you knew it wouldn’t be. After previously announcing just a quintet’s worth of dates back in November, the group has now announced a full seven-month global tour that will run from March 10 through Sept. 6 of this year.

The kickoff dates for the band’s first tour since 2011 are still the same ones that were announced three months ago: two headlining appearances at the Coachella Festival in California, April 10 and 17, preceded by warmup dates in El Paso (March 26), Las Cruces, NM (March 28) and the Phoenix area (March 30).

What’s new is everything that proceeds from April 21 at the Oakland Arena forward. RATM will hit most of the major markets in the U.S. and Canada (excluding any L.A. dates, for now, because of the Coachella competition clause), wrapping up in North America Aug. 10-11 at Madison Square Garden. From there, they spend late August and early September in the UK, France, Ireland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and Austria, where the last scheduled date for now is Sept. 12 in Vienna.

Hip-hop duo Run the Jewels , which has a new album, “RTJ4,” out this spring, will open all the non-festival dates.

Popular on Variety

The politically charged group says it plans to work with charities and activists throughout the tour, and 100% of all proceeds from the first three pre-Coachella shows will go to immigrant rights organizations.

Rage Against The Machine Brings Reunion Tour To Madison Square Garden [Review/Photos]

Ever since the long-awaited Rage Against The Machine  Public Service Announcement world tour first came into focus in early 2020, the illustrious rap-rock quartet’s trip to Madison Square Garden has stood out as a focal point of the itinerary.

What started as a two-night run at the famed New York arena on the initial 2020 schedule ballooned to a five-night, tour-closing residency by the time the extensive outing was rescheduled to 2021. Even when yet another COVID postponement pushed the spring leg of the tour to 2023 , the five unaffected August 2022 dates at MSG still lined up as the culmination of RATM’s first true U.S. tour in more than a decade.

On Monday night, frontman Zack de la Rocha , guitarist Tom Morello , bassist  Tim Commerford , and drummer  Brad Wilk finally began their momentous NYC stand with an explosive performance that both reasserted Rage’s singular sound and served as a stark reminder that the band’s rebellious, truth-to-power frequency rings just as true in today’s flawed society as it did in the ’90s.

That staying power seemed to run through the packed arena like a high-voltage current on Monday as Run The Jewels warmed up the crowd, their confrontational yet contemplative brand of hip-hop underscoring RATM’s undeniable influence on the socially conscious, stylistically versatile rap acts that followed in the group’s wake.

When Rage Against The Machine finally took the stage to a canned “Public Service Announcement” intro, it was difficult not to contemplate the bumps and bruises the band had picked up along the way on the tour’s early-summer U.S. leg. While Morello had quickly recovered after being accidentally tackled off the stage by security in Toronto , de la Rocha was carried in by security and remained seated throughout the show, as he has since he injured his knee during a performance in Chicago last month.

Would this saddling of the band’s bombastic mouthpiece dampen the potency of the performance? The answer to that question presented itself early and often: In a word, no. In two, h ell no. Endlessly animated from his unassuming seat on a road case, de la Rocha’s writhing delivery reached well beyond his physical restraints, his performance faithfully evoking hysteria among the gathered masses.

The ninety-minute performance was a barrage of hits and deep cuts befitting of the billing. Even as they were rendered minuscule by the towering screen and simple panel of lights that framed the stage, the four musicians still managed to maintain a larger-than-life aura from the first note of the show-opening “Bombtrack” to the final riffs of a closing “Freedom” > “Township Rebellion” > “Killing In The Name” combo.

Morello strangled dystopian machine tones out of his guitar in every manner imaginable. Wilk propelled the music with thundering blows, ensuring that each big moment reverberated with the same fury that it did on record. Caldwell wove the rumbles together with impeccable feel. All the while, de la Rocha recited the words of their generation-defining catalog with patented urgency, his unmistakeable sneer ringing out through the fray as the World’s Most Famous Arena shouted along.

Though these songs originally served as the rebellious soundtrack of the ’90s, their prevailing themes ring true in 2022. Throughout the show, various images, messages, and video clips displayed behind the stage illustrated jarring parallels between the anger of their era and the societal ills of today.

During a vitriolic “Wake Up”, Zack called out to generations worth of victims of violence at the hands of law enforcement, from Fred Hampton  to  Tamir Rice ,  Eric Garner to  Breonna Taylor . “This song is for every person’s name we haven’t heard,” he added, “every child’s name we haven’t heard.”

“Testify” came complete with footage of an El Paso police truck engulfed in flames, a striking visual to remind revelers of the racially motivated massacre in the predominantly Latino Texas town back in 2019. Within a searing “Freedom”, he called out for the release of Leonard Pelletier , the American Indian Movement figure who has long been imprisoned on controversial charges.

That characteristic anti-corruption thread even extended beyond the concert itself and into current events: As the lights came up following “Killing In The Name” and security guards swooped in once again to carry de la Rocha backstage, the screen informed the crowd of the tragic story of Raymond Chaluisant , the 18-year-old who just last month was gunned down in the Bronx by an off-duty corrections officer who “felt threatened” because he was holding what turned out to be a toy gun.

Bobby McFerrin ‘s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” whistled through the PA as the crowd read his story on the screen, a cleverly contradictory soundtrack to the vexing range of emotions coursing through the room—from elation to nostalgia to frustration to, well, rage.

That anger you feel is real. That frustration is not misplaced. We can’t accept playing with the deck stacked unfairly. At Madison Square Garden, Rage Against The Machine once again channelled that lingering fury into the gift of rock catharsis like no time had passed—or maybe, just enough.

Tom Morello Breaks Silence on Rage Against the Machine’s Halted Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Rage Against the Machine were just two shows into their 2022 Public Service Announcement Tour reunion tour when frontman Zack de la Rocha tore his Achilles tendon during a frenetic rendition of “Bullet in the Head.” He managed to soldier through the rest of the North American leg by sitting on a road case in the center of the stage, but they wound up canceling the remainder of the tour so he could properly heal.

“I hate cancelling shows,” de la Rocha wrote in an October 2022 letter to fans. “I hate disappointing our fans. You have all waited so patiently to see us and that is never lost on me…I hope to see you very soon.”

Where are you calling from? I’m at home in my studio. I’m working on new, exciting music of my own. It’s been a very fruitful period. I’ve been very inspired by my 11-year-old son. I’ve been relegated to being the rhythm guitar player in my family now because my 11-year-old can shred circles around me. I’ve been inspired by him. He’s been writing some riffs, and I’ve been writing some riffs. It’s been fun.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

It would be a great place to be. I certainly think Rage Against the Machine, among a lot of other bands, deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I imagine it’s taken so many ballots since there’s a fair amount of older voters. Some of them probably aren’t used to elements of hip-hop in rock, and many of them probably simply don’t know your music since Rage didn’t have actual Top 40 singles they would have heard on mainstream radio. I won’t speculate. I do know there’s a funny mix of people that do the voting. It’s people that are already in. There’s an age component. There’s a leaning mainstream component as well. I think that Willie Nelson deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and artists from various genres do as well. If you saw any of the Rage Against the Machine shows last summer, you’d be hard-pressed to make an argument against us.

Rage Against the Machine May Be Over, But Tim Commerford Is Just Getting Started

Billy joel is ending one of the longest droughts in music. who’s next, tom morello, amanda palmer, more call on fcc to restore net neutrality and 'protect art'.

It was really great. When I walked out and played the first notes of “Bombtrack,” I could tell the room was hot. There was an anticipation in the air that was pretty powerful. I had all the confidence in the world that we were going to play great. We were very well rehearsed. And I knew the chemistry we had going back to that first rehearsal in August of 1991. That really wasn’t a thing. It was just, “How is it going to translate in this hour in this year?” And it was absolutely decimating.

You incorporated videos that showed police violence and asylum seekers. It brought the show into the present in a very visceral way. That’s right. We had never engaged in any sort of production before. We spent a lot of time with some talented people shooting that footage and assembling a show that had all the raw, visceral, punk power that Rage Against the Machine is known for, but it had a dynamic visual element as well.

So you get to the second show, and Zack injures his foot midway through. What was going through your mind when you realized he was hurt pretty badly? Well, the irony is that I had just recovered from a ruptured Achilles. I was in rehearsals on crutches. I recognized the gait. But Zack toughed it out that night. And for the next 17 shows, he was more compelling as a frontman sitting on a box in the middle of the stage than 99 percent of the frontmen in the history of all time.

Was there any thought of pushing back the rest of the dates after that second show until he recovered? I don’t even recall. It was just making sure that he was all right. We didn’t know what the thing was. I didn’t want to diagnose it. But I had just gone through that. I was familiar with the severity of the injury. I was very proud of him that he soldiered on and completed the leg of the tour.

I saw you guys in Cleveland too and thought it was better with him seated, crazy as that sounds. It allowed him to focus all his energy on the vocals and was just explosive. It was absolutely explosive. It was different and unexpected for the band, and for him as a frontman. It felt, in some ways, almost heightened. And that was in room after room. At the first couple of shows, however, we were like, “What is this going to be like?” The third or fourth show was a festival [the RBC Ottawa Bluesfest] somewhere in Canada in front of about 90,000 people who just went bananas. It felt like the power of the band was undiminished.

You really showed the durability of those songs. Sometimes you hear a song that’s 30 years old and it feels 30 years old. It feels purely a product of the time it came out of. These songs are different. Yeah. I’d go further than that and say those songs feel both sonically and lyrically more relevant now than they ever have. The themes that we weave through the mind, the mash-up of sonics, it didn’t in any way feel nostalgic. It felt like electric and very present in the now.

Many fans presumed the tour would head to Europe as planned, and Zack would continue to sit on the road case until he was able to stand. Why didn’t that happen? Doctor’s orders. I don’t know all the details, but there’s dangers of flying. There’s danger of blood clots and all that. I wasn’t in the room. But it’s not the optimum care to be on the road with a newly ruptured Achilles.

Can I check a couple of boxes surrounding the U.S. tour and some misunderstandings around them? I just want to go through a couple.

Second, in regards to ticket prices: I think by this point, I think everybody is familiar with the awful idea of dynamic ticket pricing. There was that big uproar with Springsteen and this one and that one. Just to reiterate, every ticket for the show was $125 with the exception of about five to 10 percent of tickets, which we did the dynamic ticket prices with, and gave away every cent.

Every penny over $125 went to charities in those cities. In New York City, we raised over a million dollars for activist organization charities. There was a total of about six or seven million raised on that tour in what was basically a Robin Hood tactic. I wanted to say those things out loud since there was a lot of misinformation in the world about those two things.

Right. Clearly, you could have charged more than $125 per ticket and still sold out everywhere. That’s correct. And scalpers are the bane of every band’s existence because it’s some third party that’s just ripping off your fans. We competed with them and served the poorest of the poor in each of the cities where we played.

Once Zack is healed up, can you guys get back on the road? We’ll see. If there is to be any more shows, we will announce it as a band. I don’t know. I know as much as you do, honestly. Right now we’re in a time of healing. I’m in a time of making music and doing a bunch of stuff.

To bring it back to the Hall of Fame conversation, if there never is another show, I think that this tour made the case. It’s not about how much you tour. It’s about what it’s like during those moments when you do. Rage Against the Machine has played 19 shows in the past 12 years. And the resonance of those 19 shows feel, in talking to fans, like those were historical events that further the idea of what that band is like live onstage.

You say you don’t know, but aren’t you in touch with Zack? Are you asking him how he’s doing and whether or not he wants to carry on? The conversations I’ve had with band members since the tour have been about life. It’s hard for me to explain. I understand that in this interview, it’s at the top of your list, your Lord of the Rings checklist. It’s hard to explain, but when you’re in it, it’s never been like that. It’s a band that made three albums of new material, that tours very intermittently. It’s a unicorn in a way. Much of the time, there’s not a position the band is in. You know what I’m saying?

I guess. But you had 38 shows on the books that you canceled. I’m no doctor, but I’d imagine any ruptured Achilles heel would be essentially healed after a year, at least well enough to tour. A lot of fans in Europe, especially ones that had tickets, are really jonesing to see you guys . There are fans everywhere that are jonesing. [ Laughs ] There are fans all over the world. Do Rage Against the Machine fans around the world deserve to see the band? Yes. Of course they do. Would the times benefit from a culturally, spiritually, rocking-ly, potent band like Rage being onstage? Of course. I don’t have news for you on that. I apologize. There’s nothing internal in our discussions that says either yes or no.

Let me phrase it like this then: Are you hopeful there will be shows in the next year or two? [Big, long laugh] My only answer to that is “bless your heart.” [Laugh] Let me say, if there are Rage Against the Machine shows, I will be the guitar player. And of course I would love that! It’s awesome. There’s nothing like that feeling.

Put up the link in your story to “Killing in the Name” from Finsbury Park. Put up “Testify” from The Battle of Santiago. [Both shows took place in 2010.] You can feel it. You can see through a scratchy fan video that there’s never been anything like that in the history of music. There’s nothing like it, man.

So it’s not a hiatus … [Big laugh] I want you to rephrase the question as many ways as you can. [Laughs] I think I said it very clearly. If Rage Against the Machine was going on a hiatus, Rage Against the Machine would say, “We’re going on a hiatus.” That has not happened. I will say that I understand and respect the frustration. There is a sort of frustration to not knowing when you’re in the band! But that’s led to a lot of great music.

I really appreciate you humoring me since I know this is annoying, but why not just call Zack and ask how he’s healing and whether or not he wants to play more shows next year? I know the trajectory of the healing and whatnot. But it’s so hard to describe this, dude. Nineteen shows in 11 years. Three albums in 30 years. It’s different than any other situation you’ve ever interviewed. It has a very, very different dynamic. All I can say is the love I have for those dudes and that music is complete. The honor that it is, or those times we have been onstage together, is like nothing else.

For me, everything from day one, predating Rage Against the Machine, is about the music, and it is about the mission. Those are things that Rage Against the Machine is able to put the hammer down, and do like no other band.

An argument for Rage Against the Machine to get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is that there has never been a band with politics that radical on the top of the charts. It’s not close. It’s not close . That is rarified air. The engine in me doesn’t turn off when Rage isn’t onstage. The album I’m working on now will be my 23rd album. I’m super psyched. I’m going to be playing shows in Chile and Brazil and Italy and Belgium this summer with no less commitment to that music and message than any of the five sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden.

I came home in the middle of the North Hollywood Stripper Club Strike; the only unionized strip club in America is in North Hollywood where strippers are picketing out front. I went and joined their picket line and helped amplify that. Then the United Farm Workers, who I’ve been a fan and supporter of for decades now, were trying to get a bill passed that would allow greater fairness and justice in the world place. I helped with that.

The energizing wave of that tour carried on in a very significant way to help reinvigorate the mission and message of a life’s work that predates Rage Against the Machine in some ways, but was really amplified by the experience of being on that tour, and making the most of it going away.

Tell me more about these upcoming solo shows. It’s a solo tour with my band, the Freedom Fighters Orchestra. It’s places I’ve been dying to get back to since the pandemic, where some of the most passionate and wild fans in the world are, in South America and Italy and places like that. I cannot wait to play.

I saw Jack White play a small show recently in Los Angeles. We have something in common in that we’ve both been in a lot of bands. The way that he weaved and synthesized a life’s work into a very cohesive and compelling whole was very inspiring to me. I was like, “You can take the whole thing and make it all one.” I’ve always sort of segregated a bit, whether it’s the acoustic Nightwatchman stuff or EDM-leaning Atlas Underground stuff. But that was very inspiring. I’m going to be rockin’ South America and Europe.

The Hall of Fame induction is usually around November these days. If Rage does get in, do you think you guys will come and play? I will definitely be there. Beyond that, we haven’t discussed that. That’s really putting the cart before the horse. I would hope so, though.

On the Wikipedia page for Rage, should it say Rage “are a band” or Rage “were a band?” [Big laugh] I would refer to the official Rage Against the Machine statement on that point, in which there’s none! [ Laughs ]

In dangerous times, the world needs Rage … That is one powerful, potential solution to the problem. I won’t argue with you.

We can leave it there. Sorry I kept grilling you on the state of Rage. I’m sure that was annoying. That’s OK. I was warned that such a grilling was coming. I’ve been one quarter of the owner of the ring for 30 years. I understand the frustration. We just don’t operate like other bands.

Shakira surprises at Bizarrap’s set at Coachella, announces world tour: How to get tickets

Shakira made a guest appearance at Argentine producer Bizarrap's set at the Sahara tent Friday night, bringing her world-famous diss song to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and announcing an upcoming world tour.

The crowd, already energized throughout the start of Bizarrap's DJ set, became fully rapturous when the Colombian star emerged to first perform "La Fuerte," a collaboration with the producer.

She followed it with her Vol. 53 of the Bzrp sessions, a scathing diss song aimed at her ex-husband Gerard Piqué, appearing about halfway through the hour-long set.

Shakira's latest scorched-earth song ripping her ex Gerard Piqué, explained

Shakira entered with the words "La Loba Se Viene" (Spanish for "the wolf is coming") sprawled across the large screen behind her. She later announced a world tour for her latest album, "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran," calling her Coachella appearance the informal kickoff to the tour.

The official kickoff to the tour, on the other hand, will be in Palm Desert at Acrisure Arena.

Bizarrap, whose collaborations include a who’s who list of renowned Latino artists, played a litany of his popular BZRP sessions, including songs with Eladio Carrión, Milo J and Nicky Jam, during his set.

Shakira was the only guest appearance during the lengthy show, which featured plenty of cool visuals and impressive remixes by the Argentine producer.

Bizarrap didn't say much during his set, beyond imploring the crowd to keep dancing and to up the energy, but his stage presence was confident — particularly for a producer making his Coachella debut.

Though neither appeared on stage with him, Bizarrap also played his songs with Young Miko and Peso Pluma , both of whom also had their own Friday performances at the Empire Polo Club.

How to get Shakira tour tickets

Tickets go on general sale on April 22 at 10 a.m. local time, but a special presale begins this Friday with sign-up on the star's website.

Seeing how jamón gets made in the heartland of Spanish pork

In jabugo, travelers can visit ibérico pigs in the pasture and learn how to carve some of the world’s finest cured ham.

ARACENA, Spain — “How do you like the ham?” asked Manolo Romero de la Ossa, the owner of Casas, a popular restaurant here in Andalusia.

All week long around the village of Jabugo, my wife and I had been eating jamón Ibérico de bellota, the sweet, nutty, salty and creamy product of black-hoofed, free-range pigs that consume a special diet.

“It’s great,” I said. Then I mentioned just how much ham we’d been eating.

“What does that matter?” Romero de la Ossa said, dismissing me with a wave of his hand. “You’re in the ham capital of Spain, even the world, and when it’s this good, you can’t stop. You eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

He was right. To mistake cured Spanish jamón (pronounced “hahm-ohn”) with the packaged, sliced ham you find at your local supermarket would be like comparing a fast-food burger to a wagyu steak, or Pabst Blue Ribbon with a Czech bottle of Pilsner Urquell. Even Italian prosciutto is not in the same league.

Jamón Ibérico de bellota is a whole other beast. For about three months out of the year, Iberian pigs graze on acorns (or bellotas in Spanish), giving the jamón a rich taste that some Spaniards have likened to a drug.

Jabugo is synonymous with the highest-quality jamón in Spain — and, some would argue, the world. I came here because my Spanish friends would whisper in irreverent tones when anyone uttered the phrase “jamón de Jabugo.” I felt like I was let in on some culinary secret: the best cured ham on the planet comes from a village of about 2,200 people nestled in the mountains of southern Spain.

Pasture tours and jamón museums

Is there such a thing as pork tourism? There is in Jabugo.

The town is so ham-centric that the main square is called Plaza del Jamón, and there is an array of bronze sculptures of jamón-cutters. There are also museums dedicated to Spanish jamón in Jabugo and Aracena.

Jabugo boasts a handful of jamón producers. The most famous is Cinco Jotas. The company offers several services for visitors to literally get their hands dirty and have their palates dazzled. I signed up for the full experience, including a visit to the oak tree-studded pastures to hang with the hogs, a tour of the 19th-century ham-curing cellars, a lesson in how to carve jamón like a pro, and, of course, a tasting.

It all gave me a much better insight into how much time and effort it takes to nurture an unparalleled product, and why it’s so expensive. A leg of black-label jamón Ibérico can cost as much as $1,700 . Acorns are rich in fatty acids and nutrients. You could say they are a porcine superfood.

Spain has a handful of main jamón-producing regions, including Salamanca, Extremadura, the Los Pedroches Valley and Jabugo. But not all jamón Ibérico is created equal.

In 2014, the Spanish government created a color-coded system to inform consumers of the percentage of the pig’s Iberian ancestry. A white label, for example, means the breed of pig is at least 50 percent Iberian; it eats mostly fodder (a random mixture of grain, hay, and vegetables); and is not free range.

On the other end is black label, meaning the pig is 100 percent Iberian (or pata negra), it feeds from November to February on acorns, and is free range. There are also dozens of strict regulations about weight, size and the amount of free-range space the pigs should have, among other factors. Only 6 percent of the jamón Ibérico produced in Spain gets a black label designation.

Iberian pigs have fewer offspring than other breeds, produce less meat and take longer to mature. For those reasons, many ham producers in Spain crossbreed them. Cinco Jotas only uses 100 percent Iberian pigs, making it one of the few jamón-producing companies in Spain that gets the black label designation.

What makes jamón de Jabugo so special

People have been curing jamón in southwestern Spain for a very long time. Even the Romans recognized the area as particularly beneficial for the task of curing pork.

In A.D. 77 Roman writer Pliny the Elder wrote of Iberian pigs , “There is no animal that affords a greater variety to the palate of the epicure; all the others have their own peculiar flavour, but the flesh of the hog has nearly fifty different flavours.” On Christopher Columbus’s second voyage, in 1493, his ships were said to be loaded with Ibérico pigs as they crossed the Atlantic.

Until the late 19th century, ham production in Jabugo was small-scale, limited to a few small family-run slaughterhouses. It was only when a jamón-obsessed businessman, Rafael Sánchez Romero, recognized a growing demand for the high-quality ham from Jabugo that the product started to spread to cities like Seville and beyond. He started Cinco Jotas in 1879.

In 1994, jamón de Jabugo got DOP status — Denominación de Origen Protegida (literally “Protected Designation of Origin”) — a European Union certification that ensures a certain product comes from a specific geographic zone. The zone in question here extends beyond Jabugo to 30 other villages in the surrounding area where the ham produced is officially “jamón de Jabugo.”

“One of the most important factors in shaping the taste of jamón de Jabugo is the microclimate here,” said José Antonio Pavón, the Director General of DOP Jabugo, an the organization that maintains Jabugo’s DOP status. “We get 1,000 liters of rain here — that’s far more than any other ham-producing region in Spain.”

To add to that, something called the Foehn effect — a meteorological term for what happens when there’s a warm, dry condition on one side of a mountain and a cold, wet condition on the other, resulting in extreme temperature change — is caused by the wind from the Atlantic Ocean hitting the high-altitude mountains in Jabugo.

“The daytime temperature in summer can be at 105 degrees, and then at night it can go all the way down to 65 degrees,” said Maria Castro Bermúdez Coronel, the director of communications for Cinco Jotas. “This affects that taste, compared to other jamón-producing regions, in that the warm weather creates a strong flavor in the meat.”

The pigs are slaughtered — or “sacrificed” as Spaniards prefer to say — when they’re around 22 months old. Then the back legs (called “jamón”) and front legs (called “paleta,” or shoulder) sit in salt for a few weeks (one day per kilogram).

Next, they spend time in the drying process, hanging in a temperature-controlled room before being moved to a windowless cellar for a few years. The entire process can take up to five years before a leg of jamón is ready to be sliced and savored.

How to get your hands on jamón Ibérico

Look around your local supermarket — or pretty much any supermarket in the United States — and you likely will not find jamón Ibérico de bellota.

It’s not particularly hard to find jamón serrano, the most commonly produced jamón in Spain, which is good but does not possess the “wow” factor compared to black-label jamón Ibérico de bellota. If you want it, you have to go to a specialty food shop, buy it online or, like me, come to the source.

Antonio Cabrera, a sales manager at Covap, a jamón producer in Los Pedroches Valley near Córdoba, and the grandson of the company’s co-founder, said, “Italian culinary culture is so cemented in the United States, especially on the East Coast, that many people have a cultural attachment to prosciutto.”

Jamón Ibérico was approved for import by the U.S. government only in 2005 , and its emergence in the United States — particularly the black-label variety — has been crawling at a Mediterranean pace. “We have some catching up to do,” he said.

If you’re in Spain and you want to bring back some black-label jamón Ibérico de bellota (or other pork products, Spanish or otherwise), you might want to think twice: It’s illegal.

However, there are plenty of ways to buy it online: You can go straight to the source at Cinco Jotas or visit the websites for Spanish gourmet websites for the U.S. market, including La Tienda , Campo Grande or Despaña .

For a 3-ounce packet of sliced black-label jamón Ibérico de bellota, expect to pay around $40. If you want to splurge and get your own leg, prices vary depending on the weight and if it’s the front leg or the heavier back leg.

Shakira announces 2024 U.S. tour. Get tickets today

The “She Wolf” is coming out of her cage.

For the first time since 2018, Shakira will officially tour North America as part of her upcoming ‘LAS MUJERES YA NO LLORAN WORLD TOUR’ (which translates to “women no longer cry”).

Midway through the 14-concert run, the three-time Grammy winner is scheduled to stop in at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Thursday, Dec. 5.

At all shows, fans can expect to hear cuts from the Colombian icon’s recently released album that shares a name with the tour.

Hits like “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Whenever, Wherever,” and “Dia De Enero” will likely sneak into the setlist as well.

For those who can’t wait to get their hands on tickets, they can be secured as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Monday, April 22, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.

On March 22, Shakira released her 12th studio album “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.”

Comprised of 17 tracks featuring big-name collaborators like Cardi B, Bizarrap, Grupo Frontera, Rauw Alejandro, and Ozuna among others, the 47-year-old songstress sticks to español this time around. However, whether or not you speak Spanish is beside the point; Shakira’s music this time around is so catchy that you won’t mind looking up what the lyrics mean on Google Translate.

Highlights include the dance floor-ready hit “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” the infectious mariachi-inspired “El Jefe” with Fuerza Regida, and the icy “TQG” featuring Karol G.

While the whole album slaps, we’d be remiss if we didn’t shout our favorite track: the disco-flavored “Cohete.” We can’t stop listening.

Want to check it out for yourself? You can find “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” here .

Prior to announcing the tour, Shakira surprised the crowd at at Coachella on Friday, April 12 when she performed “La Fuerte” and “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” alongside Bizzarap.

A raucous fan video can be seen here:

Many Latin icons are on the road all year long.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live.

•  Jennifer Lopez

•  Fuerza Regida
