‘King of the Lowlands’, Rosebank Distillery , is preparing to welcome visitors for the first time in over three decades.

Spirit flowed from the stills once more in June 2023 following a multi-year restoration project. In June 2024, 12 months after reopening, the distillery will open its doors to the public for distillery tours.

Renovating Rosebank

Ian Macleod Distillers purchased Rosebank Distillery in 2017, with plans to restore the distillery to its former glory. Of the distillery’s revival, Leonard Russell, Managing Director of Ian Macleod Distillers said, “I could see that Rosebank Distillery was held in extremely high regard and it was a huge shame that it closed when it was distilling some of the best spirit for the Scotch whisky industry. Being small, Rosebank was one of the more expensive whiskies to produce, but in my view that’s no reason to close a distillery. Its reopening will be a very special moment for its hometown of Falkirk, for the Scotch industry, and for whisky lovers everywhere”.

The new distillery has been meticulously renovated, making use of the old mill building next to the canal, which is thought to be over 100 years old. Old is blended with new with the construction of the new glass stillhouse.

The still house is home to Rosebank’s new stills, exact copies of the stills that were stolen from Rosebank during its period of closure. These replica stills will be used to produce Rosebank’s signature style of whisky that has been long lamented amongst lowland whisky fans.

Towering over the distillery is the 108-ft chimney that became synonymous with Rosebank during its lifetime. The chimney has been passionately restored and is once again standing against the skyline of Falkirk.

From June 2024, Rosebank fans will be able to experience the architecture and whisky-making process firsthand, thanks to the new Rosebank visitor experience.

Rosebank’s Revival: The King of the Lowlands returns

Words by Becky Paskin

the exterior of relaunched rosebank distillery

When Leonard Russell visited Rosebank distillery in 2017, he was aghast. This once iconic distillery, known as the ‘King of the Lowlands’ for its elegant, fragrant single malt Scotch whisky, had fallen into a sad state of disrepair. Left to languish since its closure in 1993, weeds overtook Rosebank’s decaying, 19th century walls, which had become an attractive canvas for pigeon excrement and graffiti.

Still, this derelict monument caught Russell’s eye. The managing director of Ian Macleod Distillers, owner of Tamdhu and Glengoyne distilleries, had been seeking a third site to add to its portfolio, and here lay an opportunity to breathe new life into one of Scotland’s most iconic ‘ghost’ distilleries .

Now, following seven years of restoration work, including the navigation of a global pandemic, crumbling walls and building restrictions, Rosebank is set to open to the public this summer for the first time in its 184-year history.

rosebank distillery tour

‘I could see that Rosebank Distillery was held in extremely high regard and it was a huge shame that it closed when it was distilling some of the best spirit for the Scotch whisky industry,’ Russell says.

Rosebank has been a Falkirk landmark since it was built in 1840 on the banks of the Forth & Clyde canal, its towering 108ft chimney a bastion of a time gone by. It’s why a faithful restoration was important to Ian Macleod, but the road to revival was never going to be easy.

‘They tried to preserve as much of the old buildings as possible, but during construction there were bits of wall falling down unexpectedly, so they had to rethink plans,’ explains Katie Burns, assistant brand manager. ‘Covid was right in the middle of it so the build had to stop and prices went up.’

rosebank distillery tour

The pandemic gave the Ian Macleod team time to rethink the design of the distillery, converting the former warehouse and maltings into a visitor centre and six tasting rooms, while a new, modern glass-fronted still house was constructed on the corner, giving views of the gleaming copper stills from both the roadside and canal. ‘The architects had to carefully think about how the old blends with the new, for instance we’ve used the old floorboards of the warehouse which are now on the walls of the new still house space,’ Burns says. ‘It’s a timeless design that really brings it into the 21st century.’

tasting room inside rosebank distillery

It’s an ethos that carries through to Rosebank’s spirit , which was once revered by blenders for its elegant, floral yet weighty style, something of a contradiction thanks to its unique triple distillation and worm tub set up.

I would like to think the spirit we are producing is a modern-day reimagining of what the old Rosebank would have been

Although ‘a little bigger than the originals’, Rosebank’s three stills have been meticulously restored using blueprints kept safe by Diageo Abercrombie copperworks, while new wooden washbacks and worm tubs have also been installed. In fact, the only recovered piece of equipment is the Boby mill, a piece original to Rosebank which is still miraculously in full working order despite being an estimated 103 years old.

rosebank distillery tour

Despite best efforts, Malcolm Rennie, Rosebank distillery manager, believes replicating the original spirit would be ‘nigh on impossible’. He explains: ‘Our aim is to try and produce a spirit which would have similar characteristics to that which was produced historically. Variables in the process, such as barley varieties, yeast strains and modern mashing processes will all have different influences on the final spirit. I would like to think the spirit we are producing is a modern-day reimagining of what the old Rosebank would have been.’

The spirit is also filled predominantly into traditional refill American oak casks, to allow Rosebank’s floral character to shine without being overwhelmed by oak. The first cask was filled in July 2023 – 30 years after the site closed – and will be laid to rest in the on-site warehouses for ‘as long as necessary’ before bottling.

stills at rosebank distillery

In the meantime, Rosebank’s mature whisky is becoming more and more scarce. A small selection will be available to purchase at the distillery when it opens for public tours on 7 June, alongside a regular distillery exclusive, a bottle-your-own and 20cl bottles of Rosebank’s new make spirit.

Visitors will be able to participate in one of three distillery experiences: Rosebank Reawakening (£25) will include a tour through the original buildings and new stillhouse with an immersive multimedia experience culminating in a tasting of 12-year-old expressions from Rosebank’s sister distilleries, Tamdhu and Glengoyne. The Rosebank Rekindled tour (£95) additionally includes a tasting of Rosebank 31-year-old alongside some ‘higher age’ expressions from Tamdhu and Glengoyne.

Rosebank distillery tour

Finally, the Rosebank Revered experience (£300) is a deep dive into the distillery’s history for dedicated enthusiasts. Guests will be given a welcome reception in the Rosebank Lounge before an opportunity to taste the new make spirit, visit the newly constructed warehouse and experience a guided tasting of three ‘exceptionally rare’ Rosebank whiskies. More bespoke tours will also be available on request.

After a long journey, a new chapter begins for Rosebank. Finally, the King of the Lowlands has returned.

Tours of Rosebank distillery are available to book now for dates starting from 7 June 2024. Find out more at www.rosebank.com/visit-rosebank .

Rosebank Distillery opens visitor centre in June

Tickets for the tours can already be booked

rosebank distillery tour

Not long now until the Rosebank Distillery in Falkirk opens its doors to visitors. Tours will be offered from 7 June 2024.

Ian Macleod Distillers spent four years restoring the distillery from 2019 (we reported ) after it had been closed for 30 years. In 2017, the company took over the brand rights and existing stock from Diageo and acquired the site on the Forth & Clyde Canal, which was owned by Scottish Canals.

After starting production in July 2023 , Rosebank Distillery is taking the next step with the opening of the visitor centre on 7 June 2024, which is already eagerly awaited by fans of the whisky distillery .

In the traditional Rosebank style

“I could see that Rosebank Distillery was held in extremely high regard and it was a huge shame that it closed when it was distilling some of the best spirit for the Scotch whisky industry," said Leonard Russell, Managing Director of Ian Macleod Distillers. “Being small, Rosebank was one of the more expensive whiskies to produce, but in my view that’s no reason to close a distillery . Its reopening will be a very special moment for its hometown of Falkirk, for the Scotch industry and for whisky lovers everywhere.”

Rosebank's original mill, which is over 100 years old, is back in use following a refurbishment. Copies of the original stills can now be admired in the still house with its large glass front. It is attached to the Victorian red brick building. There are three stills, which are used for the triple distillation process that used to be standard at Rosebank. Wormtubs are also traditionally used. The distillery 's striking 108-foot chimney has been restored and continues to characterise Falkirk's townscape.

Three different tours

Three different types of visitor tours from £25 per person upwards will be available at Rosebank Distillery from June: Rosebank Reawakening, Rosebank Rekindled and Rosebank Revered. Each includes a guided tour and different tasting options. Tickets can now be booked here on the distillery's website .

The visitor centre with shop and tasting rooms will be open seven days a week from June.

Rosebank distillery

Rosebank distillery.

Rosebank is one of the most legendary closed distilleries in Scotland. The Lowland distillery is now only available in rare collectibles. “Its whisky, at its peak (not too woody!) Is as floral as the name. It was one of the finest malts produced in the Lowlands, according to the tradition of the region, by triple distillation. A grievous loss! - Michael Jackson

In 2017, Ian Macleod, who also own the Glengoyne and Tamdhu distilleries, acquired the rights to Rosebank. In 2019 Ian Macleod received approval to rebuild Rosebank. At Rosebank Distillery, too, investors attach great importance to maintaining the original sweet and floral taste profile of the whiskies. The three stills for triple distillation and the worm tub condensers are to be installed in the old distillery building. Rosebank will resume triple distillation and work with traditional worm tub condensers. A visitor center for the expected 50,000 annual visitors is also planned including tasting room and shop. The distillery should be operational again in 2021, but it will be a while before the new whiskies are released.

The Rosebank distillery was once located on the Forth-Clyde Canal, overgrown with roses (hence the name), on the outskirts of Falkirk. The origins of the Rosebank distillery reportedly date back to the 1790s, though official sources say that the distillery was founded in 1840. Had the distillery survived it would be vying for position as one of Scotlands oldest but it was not to be.

The Rosebank Single Malt went down in history as the iconic Lowland Whisky. Many whisky drinkers consider rosebank, triple distilled according to the old Lowland tradition, to be the best among the Lowland Malts. Nevertheless, and even under violent protests, the owner United Distillers decided to close Rosebank in 1993 because they wanted to concentrate on the more attractive Glenkinchie distillery.

In 2002 the buildings were sold to British Waterways. Most of the non-ferrous metal production equipment from the distillery, which was only shut down in 1993, was stolen during the holidays around the turn of 2008/09 - presumably by metal thieves. Consequently all of the production equipment in the old distillery building from stills and worm coolers had to be replaced. These were designed on the old, to replicate Rosebank’s historic style of the sweet, flowery Lowland single malt.

Some of the buildings have already been demolished and blocks of flats have been built on. The chimney, which is over 30 meters high, will be preserved. In addition, the location of the distillery is very unusual, as the site is now a wedge at a roundabout of the star-shaped intersection of several roads - A803, B816 and A9 with the bridge over the Forth & Clyde Canal. The triangular terrain offers no real possibility of direct expansion due to the adjacent road (A803) and the canal. Even the former large warehouse is separated from production by a road and has since been converted into a restaurant and apartments.

The lowlands distillery’s water was sourced from the Carron Valley Reservoir in the Fintry Hills. It had an iron mash tun, a wash, a low wine and a spirit still for triple distillation, capacity sitting at around 559,000 litres per annum. Because the whisky contains little or no peat, its character is gentler than that of other regions. The few remaining Rosebank single malt whiskies from the 1970s and 1980s are now rare whisky, are of exceptional quality and are in great demand among connoisseurs and collectors alike. Rosebank was one of the last distilleries to distill using the tranditional Lowland triple distilaltion method, alongside Auchentoshan .

The Rosebank distillery was founded in Camelon in the Scottish Lowlands in an area north of the English border and south of the imaginary line between Greenock in the west and Dundee in the east around 1840 by James Rankine. Although distillation on the site by the Stark brothers probably dates to at least 1798. Opposite Rosebank, on the other side of the Forth-Clyde Canal, John Stark’s Camelon Distillery was founded in 1826. Upon it’s closure in 1861 James Rankine leased the Camelon distillery malting house and the site became the maltings for Rosebank distillery. Camelon was all but demolished leaving only the malting house by 1865.

In 1886 the distillery was visited by Alfred Barnard (the first whiskey historian). He noted that the Rosebank distillery spanned both sides of the canal and was connected to a swing bridge. The malt was produced in the former Camelon malting plants on the west bank of the canal and then transported to the distillery via the swing bridge.During the Second World War, Rosebank was one of the few distilleries to remain in production.

The Rankine family managed to grow and modernize the distillery and in 1914, Rosebank alongside Glenkinchie, Grange, St. Magdalene and Clydesdale became one of the five founding distilleries of the Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD). Though from 1917 to 1919 production ceased. 1925 saw SMD folded into Distillers Company Limited (DCL). In 1968 the old malt house was closed and demolished. In 1987 the distillery passed to United Destillers (UD, now Diageo). The closure in 1993 was not based on quality, but rather with the unwillingness of UD at the time to spend the estimated £ 2 million on the renovation of the wastewater treatment plant. In addition, they preferred to include Glenkinchie as a Lowland representative in the new Classic Malts range, as their capacity was 5 times higher and Glenkinchie also offered more options for a visitor center. Road traffic problems were also a contributing factor.

In 2002, the property was sold to Scottish Canals, leading to a first phase of redevelopment, including luxury homes with a view of the Forth & Clyde Canal. Warehouse # 6 is now a beefeater restaurant and the rosebank distillery on the other side of the canal is still a prominent landmark, but its condition has deteriorated.

In January 2009, the BBC reported that parts of the facility had been stolen by copper thieves: “Central Scotland Police said the copper and steel equipment, worth a six-figure sum, was taken from the Rosebank distillery in Camelon”. The theft occurred sometime between Christmas Day and 20 January. The police said they believed the equipment was stolen to sell on the scrap metal market despite the re-sale value being lower. There are plans to reopen the distillery in 2020, but everything will be rebuilt except for an old flour mill - which was reclaimed from Port Ellen.

After 25 years of silence… a sleeping giant awakens. Once the beating heart of the Scottish town of Falkirk, Rosebank Distillery produced a whisky that was often described as the ‘King of the Lowlands’ until its gates closed in 1993. Saved from becoming a footnote in history by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2017, now the painstaking process of restoring and reopening the distillery has begun.

About the Brand

Rosebank whisky is a non peated, triple distilled, Lowland Single Malt. It is considered one of the finest Lowland malt whiskies due to the fruity floral style produced through triple distillation. It is also one of the few distilleries that still uses worm tub condensers, something which gives a heavier style to the spirit due to less copper contact during the condensation of the vapour.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
