Say hello to the future of cruising, Icon of the Seas. Talk about pushing – nah, ripping up – the envelope, this is Royal Caribbean’s most ambitious and out-there ship to date. They’ve really outdone themselves with this one, and we can’t wait to get you onboard.

Frankly, we would have loved a seat at the table when Royal Caribbean’s ship designers came up with Icon of the Seas. From the record-breaking Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea, to the Crown’s Edge, a ride that has you dangling high over the ocean, they went full kid-in-a-sweet-shop with their new ship, and we’re here for it.

It’s not all spills and thrills, though. Families will love the stay-all-day feel of new neighbourhood Surfside, while Icon’s AquaDome takes performance, mixology and dining to a bold new level, complete with a 360° ocean view. Like we said, Royal Caribbean truly threw down the flex with this one. 

And since you’re bound to work up an appetite with all that surfing, swimming, climbing, skating (need we go on), Royal Caribbean have seasoned Icon with no fewer than 40 dining venues. Wondering what to wear on Royal Caribbean cruise ships? What you wear depends on the venue you’re in, but we’d recommend the following:

Casual: Keep things laid back with jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses – you’re on holiday, after all! Swimwear should only be worn in the Pool Deck, but shorts are fine at breakfast and lunch.

• Smart Casual: You’ll want to spruce things up more here. Go for collared shirts, dresses, skirts, blouses or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers for men also make for smart additions.  
• Formal: Now’s the time to really stand out. For black-tie affairs think suits, tuxedoes, cocktail dresses or evening gowns.

Birthdays are the best time of year to celebrate your loved ones, especially your children. As your child's birthday approaches this year, consider making a bigger splash than a routine visit to your local arcade or trampoline park. Go for the ultimate wow factor and get away with your family for a celebration on a cruise ship — your go-to for the best birthday weekend getaways.

Cruises make the best weekend trips for birthdays because they offer immersive fun for all ages. Trade planning birthday parties for seamless celebrations everyone in your crew can enjoy. And let the ship, which caters to the younger set with nonstop bow-to-stern fun, serve as their playground. I can't think of a more perfect setting for the best birthday trips.

As a mom who has delighted in celebrating my twin sons' birthdays on Royal Caribbean cruise ships, I'm thrilled to offer my top tips for planning the best birthday cruises, ensuring your kid's next birthday is one they'll never forget.

How To Choose The Right Ship And Itinerary

Every ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet is a potentially great choice for weekend birthday trips. The stage is set the minute you board, with the engaging crew on the gangway — your very own birthday weekend welcome wagon. The buzz is palpable, and a festive vibe permeates the air.

While the ship and its amenities provide the ultimate birthday backdrop, the destinations you visit will also be great opportunities to make memories. Which itineraries promise the best birthday weekend getaways? Well, that's easy, in my opinion. The best birthday cruises are Royal Caribbean's weekend cruises to The Bahamas.

Three-night cruises depart Fridays from three Florida ports — Orlando (Port Canaveral), Ft. Lauderdale and Miami . All of these sailings feature the best way to spend a birthday in paradise: a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean's private island in The Bahamas.

The Party Starts In Your Stateroom

Royal Caribbean offers a variety of birthday trip celebratory gifts that you can pre-order in advance (or once you're onboard — a win for my fellow procrastinators out there). Classic Royal Caribbean packages include a magnetic "Happy Birthday" sign for your door, while your stateroom is adorned with a birthday garland and festive decor.

Tap into your inner creativity and stash a few extra decorations from home in your suitcase (don't forget some magnets if you want to put more birthday decor on the cabin door). I've found that photos or cutouts of my kids' favorite film characters, superheroes or animals work great.

I packed a few rolls of colorful crepe streamers to celebrate my twin sons' eighth birthdays on a birthday weekend getaway, looping nautical-themed blue and white streamers around their cabin bunk beds as they slept so they'd wake up to festive vibes. I also went to the onboard shop and purchased cute inflatable ships to place around the stateroom and captain's hats for our family to wear. Signifying we were on a birthday trip brought many welcome cheers from the ship's excellent crew as well as guests.

No perfect birthday weekend getaway is complete without cake. Royal Caribbean can help by delivering your sweets , too. Choose a vanilla or chocolate birthday cake, a box of mini vanilla or red-velvet cupcakes or request chocolate-chunk brownies, which can arrive at your stateroom to kick off your celebrations. I fondly recall a birthday cruise with Grandpa and Grandma in tow. We started the all-day birthday celebrations for my boys nice and early with ice-cream sundaes at Ben & Jerry's® for breakfast!

The Best Birthday Activities Onboard

If you were celebrating on land, you might rent a party space or take the kids to an amusement park for their birthday. On a Royal Caribbean cruise, the stage is already set with countless included activities for all ages.

A day onboard quickly fills with fun for all ages, from mini golf to rock climbing, zip lines and water slides, not to mention my kids' favorite, the FlowRider® surf simulator. I can't forget to mention the fun for kids joining the Adventure Ocean® Youth Program. A highlight of my sons' weekend birthday cruise was making new friends, dabbling in some arts and crafts and participating in wacky science experiments in their age-appropriate grouping.

You can always put on your thinking cap (or birthday hat) and design a little treasure hunt for your wee ones. I did this once, drawing a simple treasure map for my sons' birthday that led them around the ship to find six special birthday surprises — a slice of pizza, an ice cream cone, the toy section of the gift shop, roller-skating tag with mom, etc. Royal Caribbean ships are ready-made for special event cruises, so make the most of it.

Hard Rock International, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruises Team up with New Loyalty Partnership — How to Take Advantage

Members of each company’s loyalty program will now receive reciprocal benefits on a hotel stay or cruise.

It’s about to get easier for frequent travelers to ball out on a cruise or a high-end casino vacation thanks to a new partnership between Hard Rock International and both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.

Members of each company’s loyalty program will now receive reciprocal benefits on a hotel stay or cruise, according to the hotel group . Benefits include discounts on sailings, perks during a hotel stay, and more.

“This partnership expands the ways our guests can enjoy their vacations and experience entertainment, dining and gaming from ship to shore,” Jesse Hopfinger, the senior vice president, onboard revenue for Royal Caribbean International, said in a statement. 

Through the agreement, travelers who are members of Hard Rock’s Unity by Hard Rock loyalty program will receive discounts on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity sailings and can qualify for invite-only cruise giveaways . The company said top-tier loyalty members also receive an annual complimentary cruise.

Members of Royal Caribbean’s Club Royale program and Celebrity’s Blue Chip Club program will similarly receive discounts on hotel stays. Premium tier members will also receive an annual complimentary trip at select Hard Rock hotels and casinos.

"Whether extending their cruise vacation at one of our port-adjacent properties, visiting one of the participating Hard Rock Hotel and Cafe locations worldwide or enjoying the cruise lines' ships sailing around the world, travelers will have new ways to enjoy the best of what Hard Rock, Seminole Casinos and Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have to offer,” Jeff Hook, the executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Seminole Hard Rock Support Services, said in the statement.

Overall, travel rewards programs offer a great opportunity for frequent travelers to save on a trip and access exclusive perks along the way from upgrades on airlines to late check-out at hotels, and more.

The decision to partner with Hard Rock comes as Royal Caribbean continues to upgrade its private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , with overwater cabanas and a new adults-only beach club . Last week, the private island welcomed guests from Celebrity Cruises for the first time.

3 Royal Caribbean drink package secrets passengers should know

D rink packages make a cruise more all-inclusive. If you opt to buy Royal Caribbean's Deluxe Beverage Package (DBP), you basically never have to think about ordering anything from bottled water and soda to top-shelf liquor.

There are some pricey glasses of wine and rare spirits that aren't included in the package which covers drinks up to $14 on the ship and at the cruise line's private islands. If you do order a drink that costs more than $14, Royal Caribbean simply charges you the difference.

Buying the DBP, however, is not an easy decision, because it can literally cost more than the base fare for your cruise, Some passengers, of course, won't sail without it because they don't want to think about how much money they're spending while onboard.

For most passengers, however, going a la carte versus buying the package isn't an easy decision so it's important to know everything you can about the Royal Caribbean Deluxe Beverage Package. 

1. Beware of Royal Caribbean's discounts 

Royal Caribbean uses dynamic prices for the DBP. It often advertises "sales," on the beverage package using percentage off and sometimes it sells it onboard as buy-one-get-one 50% off. 

When there's no set price, those percentages mean nothing. It's important to focus on the bottom line price you pay per day for the DBP. That can range from around $60 per day to over $100 (with an 18% gratuity added on to the total price). 

The price also moves and people on the same sailing may end up paying very different prices. In a broad sense, to get a good price, you should start monitoring the cost of the DBP as soon as you book your cruise. If you see a price you're happy to pay, it's best to book. 

If the price drops, you can cancel and repurchase although it can take around a week for the original purchase to be refunded.

2. All adults in a cabin must buy a drink package

Technically, Royal Caribbean requires that all adults over 21 booked in the same cabin must buy the DBP if one buys it. In reality, if you call the cruise line and ask, you will usually be allowed to buy a Refreshment Package, basically all-you-can-drink non-alcoholic beverages.

If you do that, however, it's very important to know that if you have the DBP, you cannot share any alcoholic beverages. Any passenger doing that runs the risk of having their beverage package canceled without a refund.

The cruise line takes this very seriously as it does not want one person buying the DBP and then sharing it with anyone else.

3. Royal Caribbean's beverage package is often a value

Royal Caribbean offers water and basic coffee and tea in a few locations on its ships. It also has iced tea, lemonade, and flavored water at the Windjammer Buffet. It's a pretty limited selection and the DBP includes all drinks — bottled water, soda, smoothies, premium coffee beverages (except at dedicated Starbucks locations), milkshakes, fresh-squeezed juice, energy drinks, and more. 

So, with most cocktails and glasses of wine costing $12-$14 and beer being around $8 — although there is some variance based on brands — even someone who has 3-4 alcoholic beverages a day might get value from the DBP. That can actually depend on their non-alcoholic beverage consumption.

Bottles of water cost $2.25 while cans of soda are $3.50 and specialty coffees are around $5. Milkshakes and smoothies cost even more than that so it's important to consider your total potential beverage consumption before making the decision on the DBP.

If the numbers are close, the peace of mind from not having to keep track may well make it worth it even if it ends up costing you slightly more.

We have just booked a cruise to the Baltics for next year. I am trying to find out the average cost for a day trip to Moscow from STP. I have searched several times, and whilst I have read reviews and reports about the trips etc - I cannot actually see any examples of the costs. I imagine its quite expensive - but we want to do it so I need to budget LOL !!

Any ballpark figures ? :D

We did the Moscow trip through our cruise ship in late July 2008. Its cost was a little under $1000 pp. Now, that cost through this cruise line is a little over that $1000 pp cost. Now, most are using the high-speed rail connection versus the air flights as we did. I have seen some other numbers from other cruise lines and/or private firms that run $700-850.

Why cheaper or the differences? As cruise lines are pressured to keep their "sticker price" low, they need to make up some "margin" with ship tours, beverages, spa stuff, etc., to help cover their costs and gain some profit. Second, different tours provide various features. Our tour included going inside the famed and spectacular Kremlin Palace. Most Moscow tours don't feature that option and you cannot just walk up there and get in on your own. That Palace is where the Czars were crowned and all of the current/recent Russian leaders assumed their powers.

We could have saved a little if we had used a private tour to go to and visit Moscow, but, with my wife's pushing, we felt it was worth it to pay a little more, do it through the cruise line. If there had been any problems or mix-ups, it was the ship's duty to "make it right" and we would not have to worry.

If you have three days in St. Petersburg and/or have been there before, then the Moscow tour can work out very well. It's not cheap, but in my view, worth it!! Both are a few of my visuals from this super great city with such interesting history and dramatic architecture.

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

So if you can get a group together the per person price goes down considerably. You can try to do this on the roll call section of cruisecritic.

We did not go to the Palace and as Terry says this is not included generally in tours. However, we did go to the Diamond Fund, an amazing display of crown jewels and jewelry in the Armoury building but not really part of the Armoury. I would think you could include this if you had a small group and really wanted to see it. It is quite small and does not accommodate a large group. You can google "diamond fund kremlin" to learn more.
