Japan – Self-Guided Nakasendo Trail Hiking Tour

Self-Guided Nakasendo Hiking Tour in Japan: Have you ever dreamed of exploring the famous Nakasendo route in Japan? This ancient trail is one that is steeped in history! It was one of the five routes of the Edo period (1603-1867,) and one of the only existing trade routes that connected Edo to Kyoto. Not only will you go back in time as you explore this route, but you will also immerse yourself in nature and the rich cultural beauty found only in this area. Our self-guided Nakasendo Hiking Tour incorporates the most beautiful elements of the Japanese culture, beginning with the unique and traditional accommodations that are so well-known here. Ryokans and minshuku are Japanese-style inns that are often family-run, featuring the typical futon or tatami-mat rooms. During your stay, enjoy authentic and delicious cuisine and hot spring baths to soothe your aching muscles – truly the quintessential Japanese experience! This once-in-a-lifetime trip on the Nakasendo Trail of Japan combines the most intriguing and not-to-be-missed city of Kyoto with the ultimate Japanese countryside walking experience. We cannot think of a more perfect way to see and hike Japan!

They always include the Japanese-style tatami (straw) matting and futons laid out in the evening by the ryokan staff. Many ryokan have both en suite bathrooms (with the exception of some older buildings) and communal hot spring-style baths (segregated by sex). This is the traditional Japanese experience.

Dates: Plan your trip at a time that best fits your schedule! Pure Adventures tours have flexible start dates.

2024 Tour Rates:

  • US $3397 – per person & based on double occupancy
  • US $1404 – single supplement

Luggage Transfer Options: Luggage transfer can be added for a supplement, but most travelers prefer to use “takuhaibin” instead. With the daily luggage transfer, you will have to bring your luggage with you on the train and to the trailhead by bus, before it is taken from you. It is the with them and they have to take it with them from the trail onward. For takuhaibin, which is a more economical service, you can send your bags ahead of you to meet them later in the journey, and then travel with just a small daypack that includes overnight essentials. It is possible to travel quite light in Japan because the inns provide yukata – cotton kimono style robes that are customarily worn in the inn (and even outside), basic toiletries, and shoes are not worn inside in Japan. So, all you really need is a change of shirt, socks, and underwear for the following day’s hike, and perhaps some raingear. The takuhaibin service works amazingly!

  • 20% deposit required at time of booking
  • We can accept last-minute bookings (less than 30 days prior to the initial travel date.)

New! Travel Insurance is now required to participate in this tour. You can book through our preferred vendors or your own. Proof of coverage will be required.

Our 3-day self-guided Nakasendō tour provides a fantastic introduction to the trail on this condensed version featuring the highlights of the preserved post towns of the Nakasendō Trail located in the Kiso Valley.  You’ll travel to and from the trail with ease on Japan’s renowned bullet trains.

In the evening, you stay overnight in traditional Japanese inns. Typically your accommodation will consist of an evening in a small family-run guesthouse known as a minshuku , and on your second night, you’ll enjoy bathing in thermal onsen  waters. Sacred pilgrimages, coastal walks & island life

Japan is one of our all-time favourite destinations, and we’ve got the best hikes!

The sacred 1000-year-old Kumano Kodo trail is famous for its challenging terrain, beautiful temples and scenery. The shrines, mist, forests and waterfalls create an entrancing hike. Some sections will have you huffing and puffing up steep inclines, while others offer serene pathways to let your thoughts roam free. The sense of accomplishment is incredible!

For something easier, you can walk in the footsteps of Samurai warriors on the delightful Nakasendo Way . This ancient path offers a stunning journey steeped in history and is an ideal introduction to walking in Japan. Many of the post towns along the route are well-preserved and relatively unchanged since the trail’s heyday.

For those with a penchant for adventure, we invite you to discover the magic of the new Michinoku Coastal Trail . Located in the beautiful Tohoku region, it’s one of the most diverse and immersive trails you’ll find in Japan. The 1025km trail hugs the famed Sanriku Coast and is destined to become one of the world’s most iconic hikes.

Further south, you’ll find the lush forests and picturesque beaches of Okinawa – a sun-drenched, coral-fringed tropical paradise offering the perfect combination of exploration, adventure, indulgence and relaxation.

Japan will surprise and delight you at every turn. Food is a work of art. Onsen culture is truly unique and iconic. And every season, the landscapes undergo a breathtaking transformation – cherry blossoms adorn the trails in spring, while fiery foliage adds a touch of magic in autumn.

Good quality hiking gear is essential for a safe, enjoyable and successful hiking experience. The right gear for your hike will depend on the terrain, weather conditions, duration of the hike, and your individual preferences. Waterproof walking boots with full ankle support are recommended for hiking in Japan. Make sure your footwear is well worn in and comfortable and you have good quality hiking socks. Choose clothes that will shield you against varying weather conditions and temperature changes. Moisture-wicking, quick-drying, insulating layers and waterproof outer layers.

Cherry blossoms ( sakura ) typically bloom in Japan between late March and early April. The exact timing of the cherry blossom season can vary depending on factors such as location, weather conditions, and the specific variety of cherry tree. Cherry blossoms tend to bloom first in southern regions such as Okinawa , typically starting in late January to early February. In central regions, including popular tourist destinations like Tokyo and Kyoto, cherry blossoms usually bloom from late March to early April.

Autumn is also a popular time to hike in Japan. Koyo –  meaning autumn-coloured foliage – draws a cult following all around Japan, where people follow the changing of the leaves and base their holidays around this phenomenon. From late October to November there are striking displays of foliage and cooler temperatures – worth timing your Japan hike for!

Public transport in Japan is known for being efficient, reliable and punctual. This combined with the friendly, helpful locals does make travelling around very manageable but you should be comfortable reading timetables and independently navigating your way around stations and platforms as many train journeys do require transfers of trains.

If you have heard about a Japan Rail Pass but really aren’t sure if this is something you’ll need or will be beneficial for you, read more here: Do I need a Japan Rail Pass?

January is winter in Japan, which makes it the season for magical hikes, snow festivals, snow monkeys, onsens (always!) and of course skiing. For experienced hikers, January is a good time to hike the Kumano Kodo. It is quieter and a great time to fully appreciate it. Daylight hours are shorter so it’s important to plan your hike each day with this in mind.

Read about our top reasons to visit Japan in winter .

Yes! Most Japanese people you will encounter in the accommodations may not speak fluent English but they can generally understand at least a few basic words of English and, usually, communication is not a problem due to the willingness of the friendly locals to help. Japanese people are very helpful and good at anticipating guests’ needs, so they can usually understand most basic requirements even if they don’t speak English themselves. It’s always a good idea to learn a few basic phrases before you travel.

Japan is generally a safe destination for solo travellers, including solo hiking. The country is known for its low crime rates, efficient public transport, and well-maintained hiking trails. RAW Travel makes solo travel easy and achievable by offering comprehensive pre-departure information and advice, a personalised itinerary, a navigation app, as well as an informative orientation at the start of your walk.

Japan’s fascinating culture is a highlight of this beautiful country. Japanese people do not expect outsiders to be aware of all the complex cultural rules they abide by but some basics are expected to be followed, especially concerning footwear and bathing. Get them wrong and you will cause great offence, so do your research before you go.

Japanese culture places a strong emphasis on respecting others and maintaining harmony in public spaces. It’s customary to remove your shoes and change into the slippers provided when entering a Japanese guesthouse, traditional restaurant or temple. Daily bathing is an important part of Japanese culture and onsen etiquette  is well-established.

If you’re unsure about what to do, observe the behaviour of those around you and follow suit.

Your trip in detail

Maneki-neko in Tokyo

Arrival at Tokyo airport (Narita or Haneda). Welcome to Japan! Yokoso 日本へようこそ!

Welcomed out of customs by our airport assistant, who will give you all your travel documents and Pocket WiFi. Unaccompanied transfer from the airport to Tokyo (see details).

This transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other guests departing for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers depart between 1.5 and 3 hours after your scheduled flight arrival and stops can be made before your hotel.

If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to take the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option.

Check-in at the hotel OMO3 Tokyo Akasaka by Hoshino Resorts or same category hotel 3* (rooms available from 15:00).

Day 2 : First steps in the capital

What is there to do in Tokyo on the first day?

We advise you to slowly start visiting Tokyo from its western districts: - Harajuku : the avant-garde district - Meiji Jingû, the imperial shrine - Takeshita-Dori: the most famous street in Japan - Omotesando: Tokyo's Champs-Élysées - Shibuya and its unmistakable "crossroads"

One of our many experienced English-speaking guides can also accompany you to visit the classic sights of Tokyo (optional, from 9:00 to 17:00).

Day 3 : City or mountains?

For this second day, you can continue to visit Tokyo (Ginza, Asakusa, Tokyo Sky Tree...) or if you prefer walking in nature to urban walks, don't hesitate to go on a day trip from Tokyo! Mount Mitake or Hatanosu Canyon are good ideas for hikes accessible from Tokyo. Details in your travel diary.

Day 4 : On the way to the former capital

Kiyomizu dera temple in Kyoto during fall leaves

Kiyomizu dera temple in Kyoto during fall leaves

In 2h30, reach Kyoto by Shinkansen (direct, included in your package) and check into the RAKURO 京都 by THE SHARE HOTELS   or same category 3*.

You have 3 days to visit Kyoto. Start in the afternoon in the historic Gion district near your accommodation : - Kiyomizu-Dera, the great water temple - The historical streets of Sannen-zaka & Ninnen-zaka - Kodai-ji, the maple and bamboo temple of Kyoto

Finish off seeing the sunset in Gion. Meet your guide at 19:00 to start your late stroll around Gion , Kyoto's historic district. More details on the exact time and location in your travel diary.

At the end of this 1 hour 30 walk, your guide will be able to advise you on the best places to eat out! Please note that it is strictly forbidden to take photographs in the historic district of Gion.

Day 5 : Gold and Silver Treasures

Golden Pavilion Kinkaku-ji : a must-see in Kyoto ancient capital

We recommend the following itinerary for this second day's visit to Kyoto: - Ryoan-ji Zen Garden - The Kinkaku-ji ( Golden Pavilion ) - Ginkaku-ji ( Silver Pavilion ) - The bewitching path of philosophy - The Nanzen-ji temple

One of our many experienced English-speaking guides can accompany you on a tour of these symbolic sites (optional, from 9:00 to 17:00).

Even though Kyoto is a city of 1.5 million people, it's still surrounded by forests, with many tourist sites located between city and forest.

Day 6 : Day hike

Bamboo grove in Arashiyama : famous touristic site to visit in Kyoto

A guide will meet you at your accommodation at 8:30am to take you on a getaway to Takao Mountain. Buddhist temples set on the mountain and maple trees blazing in autumn are the scenery in the small village of Takao , an ideal place for an all-season hike less than an hour from Kyoto.

Day 7 : Between temples and deer

Nara Sika deers are sacred, and protected as National Treasures.

For your last day in Kyoto and its surroundings, we recommend taking the 50 minute journey to Nara, which is included in your package.

Details in your travel guide.

Visit to Nara, the first permanent capital of Japan in the 8th century. Discover: - The Shinto shrine Kasuga Taisha and its thousands of lanterns - The Todaiji, its great bronze Buddha and the imposing Nan-Daimon gate - Kofukuji temple and its beautiful pagoda

Return to Kyoto and stop for sunset at Fushimi Inari, the huge 10,000 torii sanctuary in Kyoto. If you wish to be accompanied on this day, one of our English-speaking guides will unveil all the secrets of Japan's first capital (optional, return trip from Kyoto).

Day 8 : The Sacred Island

The Daisho-in temple, on the sacred island of Miyajima, is worth a visit with its 500 small Buddhist statues

In the morning, we advise that you have your luggage sent to the hotel in Fukuoka (details in your travel diary, check with the hotel reception) and that you travel light for your night in Miyajima.

Shinkansen train ride from Kyoto to Miyajima (2h20, 1 change) then boat (20 minutes). The train and boat included in the Japan Rail Pass.

Reach your ryokan near the island's ferry terminal.

Explore the island: its Itsukushima-jinja shrine and its large gate (ootorii) standing in the sea.  (Please note: The ootorii is under construction until an unspecified date). Take the cable car up to Mount Misen and then descend on foot. A breathtaking view of Hiroshima Bay is waiting for you!

At night at the ryokan, you will be treated to a tasty traditional Japanese dinner before retiring to your tatami room.

Day 9 : Make way for history

The Genbaku Dome, one of the only buildings not destroyed by the atomic bomb that fell on Hiroshima

The Genbaku Dome, one of the only buildings not destroyed by the atomic bomb that fell on Hiroshima

Traditional Japanese breakfast at the ryokan.

In the morning, make a stop in Hiroshima (30 minutes by train from Miyajimaguchi Ferry Station, included in your JR Pass), to visit the Peace Park and its memorial.

Continue from Hiroshima to the island of Kyushu and its capital, Fukuoka, in 1 hour by Shinkansen (included in your JRPass).

Arrive in the centre of the vibrant city of Fukuoka and check into your hotel near the central station.

With its 2000 years of history, the capital of Kyushu has always been the gateway to Asia (Korea and China) and Western culture (Portugal and its Jesuits, Holland). Another Japan, more Asian and further away from Tokyo, awaits you. Capital of a booming region, Fukuoka is now one of the most dynamic cities in Japan with its many high-tech companies and the hosting of a global event: the Rugby World Cup in October 2019.

Visit the lively Nakasu and Tenjin districts and their yatai - hundreds of delicious and welcoming open-air restaurants at low prices. A great way to spend one final evening!

Day 10 : The mystical island

Breakfast at the hotel.

Transfer to Fukuoka airport in 5 minutes by metro from Hakata central station, see details below. Take a midday flight to Yakushima airport (direct, 1 hour 05).

In the afternoon, check-in at your hotel.

Yakushima is a must for hikers and nature lovers: with its thousand-year-old cedars reputed to be the oldest trees in the country, a large part of the island's plant heritage is classified by UNESCO. Its forest is also famous for being the inspiration for the Studio Ghibli film "Princess Mononoke".

Enjoy the port of Anbo or Miyanoura (depending on your accommodation) and find a good place to have dinner. You won't be disappointed by the local specialities!

Day 11 : The thousand-year-old cedars

The tiny tropical island of Yakushima in Japan has inspired Hayao Miyazaki for "Princess Mononoke"

Go for a hike in the incredible nature of Yakushima with a local English-speaking guide! Your guide will meet you at 8am at your accommodation. Depending on your personal preferences and your fitness level (and the weather conditions), you will go for a day's walk in the forest and discover the wonders of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its thousand-year-old forest and its special eco-system.

Day 12 : Japan's wilderness

Yakushima Island is home to very dense and wild nature

Continue to explore the island from your hotel or by bus on the roads around it. There is no shortage of hiking opportunities on this stunning island: waterfalls, thick forests inhabited by countless monkeys, mangroves, magnificent beaches. .. nature in its raw state. Optional: climb a mountain with a guide!

Day 13 : The capital of Kyushu

Nanzo-in Temple, 25-minute train ride from Fukuoka, attracts many pilgrims who come to see the reclining Buddha.

Around noon, return to Fukuoka for your last night. (1 hour 05, direct route, included in your offer)

Check into your 3* hotel.

In the afternoon, continue to explore the city of Fukuoka. There are still many iconic sites to see: - Momochi district: Fukuoka Tower and other futuristic buildings  - Japan in the 22nd century - Canal City Hakata , a huge shopping centre integrated into the city, its city park and its canals - Asian Art Museum, the world's first museum for modern Asian art - Shofoku-ji Temple, the oldest Zen temple in Japan - Hakata Machiya, a district of old merchants' houses

Night in your hotel.

Day 14 : Sayonara, and see you next time!

More about your trip

  • The prices displayed on this page may vary according to the exchange rate of the Japanese ¥.
  • Unfortunately, this tour is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • Children and babies accepted. From 3 to 11 years old a child rate is offered. In each accommodation, a standard adult bed will be offered to them, and a standard seat will be allocated to them in transport. From 0 to 2 years old inclusive, a "baby" rate is offered. This price corresponds to the allocation of a cot in the majority of the accommodation of the chosen circuit. However, we cannot guarantee a baby cot in each accommodation.
  • This programme is subject to change due to circumstances such as weather conditions or any other case of force majeure. Please note that due to the current circumstances, any information mentioned is subject to change or modification.
  • Travel diary by email 3 weeks before departure, and other electronic documents
  • Paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transportation card, Japan Rail Pass voucher) and Pocket WiFi upon arrival at the airport by our airport assistant.
  • Note : In very rare cases, mostly in very high season, steps might be reversed. You will be informed in your mini travel-guide. Thanks for your kind understanding.

Your accommodation :

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the city and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the booking price. Normally, it is 200¥/night/person (about £1.37/1.93$) but can be slightly higher in 4* hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodations, it is included in the initial tour price.
  • Room size: in Japan, a densely populated country where everything is compact, 3-star luxury hotels are of very good quality but the rooms are often quite narrow (12 to 20m2/129 sq ft to 215 sq ft) depending on the hotel. Please note the size of the single room, between 10 and 16m2 (107sq ft and 172 fq ft). For more comfort, you can choose our luxury 4* accommodation upgrade option.
  • Double room: Rooms for two people in western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be joined together. As an option, you can select a double room instead of a twin if you prefer a double bed.
  • Single room: People travelling alone and wishing to book a single room must pay a supplement at the time of booking. The single room supplement is compulsory for orders with an odd number of participants. Please note that if you request more than two people in a single room, the single room supplement will be applied to all accommodation except for the ryokans (3 and 4*). In fact, as this is traditional accommodation, people with the same reservation are grouped together in spacious rooms for up to 5 people.
  • 3-person room: If there are 3, 5 or more of you and you do not select the single supplement, a triple room will be allocated to you.
  • In the case of a group order (> 5 people), it is possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. Nevertheless, we aim to keep you close.
  • Names of the hotels : The names given on the site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, an establishment of equivalent standing will be scheduled. Hotels, corresponding to local standards, are given as an indication and may be changed on site for hotels of a similar category.
  • In the ryokan, the rooms have a private sink and toilet. The single-sex collective Japanese baths ("onsen") then act as shared bathrooms, with showers and thermal baths. They are freely accessible, at the times in force on the site. These baths are often not accessible to people with clearly visible tattoo (s). The latter are invited to contact us to evaluate the possibilities of accommodation with private baths or shared baths that can be reserved. The 4* ryokan (see 4* option) have comfortable futons raised on either western beds in a traditional tatami room. The bathrooms and toilets of the 4* ryokans are private.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour. Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to include flights in your order: Flights in economy class with stopovers or direct flights, eco-premium or business air upgrades, provincial departures or abroad: we will be able to advise you.
  • The tour departure and end dates presented on this page relate to your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and will leave from Fukuoka airport (FUK). You will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 18pm at the latest to make the most of the airport services of your tour (welcome and transfer to Tokyo). The return flight is on the same day due to the time difference, with a departure time of 9am at the earliest. Please do not hesitate to consult us for any uncertainty or need for precision in the choice of international flights.
  • Please note that for the return flight from Fukuoka International Airport, you will need to change at Tokyo, Helsinki or one of the major Asian cities. In Tokyo and Seoul, please check that the connecting airports are the same. Fukuoka -> Tokyo and Fukuoka -> Seoul flights sometimes land at different airports (Tokyo Haneda HND or Seoul Gimpo GMP) from those from which international flights to Europe depart (Tokyo Narita NRT or Seoul Incheon ICN).
  • If the flights have been purchased by your care without the intervention of Japan Experience, it is necessary to send us by mail 1 month before your departure your flight information (flight number, airport, date and time of arrival) to allow us 'Organize your welcome and airport transfer.
  • Airport Transfers: The shared limousine bus leaves from the airport and stops either in front of your hotel or at a stop within 1-15 minutes walk from your hotel. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will drive you to the platform to pick up the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your hotel reception, please choose the option "Accompanied Airport Transfer". This transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to take the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option. Please note: due to the many changes in flight schedules by the airlines, if the airline notifies you of a change in arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and if it exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. You will then have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for abusive schedule changes. The same applies to your return journey: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. Similarly, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement procedures with the airline company being the only solution. Japan Experience is not responsible for last minute schedule changes.
  • The return transfer from your hotel to Fukuoka International Airport is by public transport from the central station. 5 minutes by metro from Hakata Central Station, located near your hotel. It's a straightforward journey, with the train arriving directly at the airport. There are 2 terminals connected by a free shuttle bus. Cost: 260¥ (about £1.71 / 2.42$, paid with your pre-paid transport card, already loaded with the amount for the transfer). From 5:30am to 12:25am, with metros every 4 to 8 minutes. If you want door-to-door transport, we recommend that you contact your hotel reception to order a taxi. It will cost you approximately £12.85 / 17.83$ for a 20 minute journey.
  • These details regarding airport transfers in Fukuoka also apply to domestic flights to Yakushima; however, in Kagoshima, transfers to the hotel are by bus or taxi, at your expense.
  • Included in your tour is a pre-charged transport prepayment card of ¥ 1,500 (around £10.30 / 14.54$) (suica or Pasmo brand); and a 7-day Japan Rail Pass. These cards should cover a large part of your trips during the stay. Upon expiry of the 1,500¥ Transport Prepayment Card, or if the line you are travelling on is not covered by your Japan Rail Pass, any travel will be at your own expense by recharging your pre-paid transport card (at vending machines in all stations and metro stations).
  • Travel by metro and bus in the cities (payable by pre-paid transport card, included in your package)
  • Transfers from the train station to the hotels (by foot, bus, metro or taxi)
  • Travel on private train lines (other than JR)
  • Travel on Nozomi and Mizuho high-speed trains (shinkansen)
  • Trips made outside the validity period of the Japan Rail Pass
  • Japan Rail Pass: It is not necessary to possess a Japan Rail Pass which covers your entire stay. This is only cost-effective if it is used for long journeys between the different stages of your stay (especially in shinkansen) which are very expensive. In large cities like Tokyo, only about ⅓ of public transport is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and getting around is relatively cheap (Tokyo metro tickets: £1.71 / 2.42$; Kyoto daily bus card: £1.71 / 2.42$). Thus, providing you with a Japan Rail Pass for more than 7 days (14 or 21) would not be cost-effective and, on the contrary, would significantly increase the cost of your trip.
  • If a person taking part in the tour is a Japanese national and a resident of Japan, or a foreigner with tax residence in Japan (including a student), then that person is not eligible for the Japan Rail Pass. Please contact us to get the price of the tour without a Japan Rail Pass. They will have to buy the train tickets for the tour directly in Japan. The Kansai Thru Pass is also subject to the same nationality/residency requirements. This is not the case for the Hakone Free pass. If this person is a Japanese citizen but not a resident of Japan, then he/she can benefit from the Japan Rail Pass under certain conditions (see  https://www.japan-experience.com/frequently-asked-questions ).

Your activities :

  • Airport reception is in English. Your airport assistant will be waiting for you at the customs exit holding a sign with the name of the reservation. They will give you your travel documents and take you to your airport transfer. They will not accompany you to Tokyo (this is possible, but optional).
  • The guided tour of Gion takes place in groups of 12 people maximum, from 6pm to 7:30/8:00pm. In English. More details on the meeting place in your travel journal. Dinner is not planned but your guide will be able to give you their best spots.
  • The day trips in Tokyo and Yakushima are guided, private and in English. You are responsible for all additional costs (transport, meals, sightseeing) yourself.

Your meals :

  • Traditional Japanese dinner and Japanese breakfast (mostly savoury) are included in your Miyajima tour. Do not hesitate to indicate any dietary requirements you may have, we will pass them on to the ryokan so that they can take them into account when planning the meals. If the ryokan does not take any of these dietary requirements into account, we cannot be held responsible and no compensation will be issued.
  • Breakfasts which are not included in your package can be added at the reception when you arrive at the hotel. However, you will find many cafés near your hotel serving copious breakfasts, often tastier than those in the hotels, which sometimes have tight schedules and are predominantly savory. However, if you would like to add breakfast to your offer when you make your reservation, you can select it as an option.

Your additional services:

  • A pocket wifi is included in your tour. It allows unlimited high-speed internet access. Your Pocket WiFi will be given to you at the airport of arrival.
  • It comes with a small booklet to operate your device (don't panic: simple operation) and a prepaid envelope to return your device at the end of your stay. Your pocket wifi will work naturally until the last day of your trip to Japan.
  • A maximum of 5 devices can be connected to a pocket wifi (phone, tablet, computer).
  • A single pocket wifi is provided for a circuit order of 1 to 5 people. For an order of 6 people or more, a second pocket wifi will be added automatically and at no extra cost to your reservation.

When you buy, Japan Experience offers you 2 types of protection:

Japan Experience Flex :  Cancellation insurance before departure under conditions.

Japan Experience Protect : Pre-departure cancellation insurance under conditions and on-site assistance under conditions.

For a first trip to Japan, a period of 2 weeks is optimal, with at least 3 days in Tokyo and 3 days in Kyoto and its region. Don't forget to take some time at the beginning of the trip to get used to the time difference.

What are the essentials for a first trip to Japan?

The must-see places for a first trip to Japan are:

  • Tokyo, the megalopolis with a thousand sides to it
  • Kyoto, the capital of sophistication and Nara, with its temples and deer
  • Hiroshima, between memory and modern times, and its sacred island Miyajima
  • Mount Fuji, Japan's most famous mountain
  • The Japanese Alps: Takayama, Matsumoto, Shirakawa-go
  • Kanazawa, both modern and traditional, on the Sea of Japan

And many other unforgettable places to discover in our tours.

Where should you start your tour in Japan? Where should you finish?

Most Japan Experience tours begin in Tokyo. This is because it is the gateway to both modern and traditional Japan. Tokyo allows a traveller to enter Japan step by step, whilst getting used to the time difference. Tokyo also has Japan's top two airports in terms of traffic. A few of our tours end in the Kansai region (Kyoto or Osaka). The return flight then goes from from Kansai International Airport (KIX), the 3rd largest airport in Japan, offering many possibilities for return flights to Europe without any real extra cost compared to a return flight from Tokyo. On these tours, the Japan Rail Pass does not cover the whole tour, allowing you to reduce the total price of the tour. And this without losing any transport possibilities as the Japan Rail Pass is of little use in Kansai. However, tours are available from Tokyo and sometimes other cities in Japan.

  • Self-Guided Walking Tour through Places Linked to the Water

Hike sacred mountains, feel the ocean breeze, and dine on delicacies at outstanding inns

Take a four-day trip through nature, history, and culture on your own two feet as you visit various sites throughout Kyoto, Fukui, and Shiga Prefectures. On this self-guided walking tour, feel a strong sense of accomplishment after reaching each destination, and of oneness with the earth. Immerse yourself in the beauty of pristine nature and the religions that worship it, as you rest at three exceptional, Japanese-style accommodations.

The theme for this journey is “water.” The mountainous region close to the Sea of Japan receives ample snow during the winter. The mountain snow transforms into water that flows into rivers, the sea, and ancient Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan and indeed one of the oldest lakes in the world. With access to abundant water, civilizations have long gathered in this region, worshiping the life-giving mountains and prospering from trade on the ocean.

Highlights of the tour include a breathtaking view of Lake Biwa from the top of Mt. Horai as well as a visit to Kumagawa-juku, a historic village near the Sea of Japan. To enhance the meditative experience, you will also hike to Enryakuji and Eiheiji temples, which are located among sacred mountains. Both temples are central to significant sects of Buddhism that have influenced Japanese history and culture.

Along the way, you will also dine on mouth-watering regional delicacies and Buddhist cuisine. At the end of each day, you will rest in luxury in lodging boasting uniquely local architectural designs.

Although self-guided, this walking tour by Oku Japan includes detailed guidebooks, maps, and other directions in English, as well as a support team in Kyoto ready to respond to questions you have during your journey.

Access: From Shin-Osaka Station, take the local train to Osaka Station (about five minutes), where the tour begins.

Self-guided walking in Japan

  • Get off the beaten path and experience Japan's unique culture and way of life
  • Visit Japan's most iconic cities, exploring serene temples and neon cityscapes
  • Take an 11th-century Kumano Kodo pilgrimage through rural Japan
  • Stay and taste exquisitely hand-crafted meals in traditional Japanese inns
  • Travel on the bullet train and relax as the beautiful scenery flashes past
  • Walk the Nakasendo Trail, the ancient highway from Kyoto to Tokyo
  • Relax in a soothing natural onsen bath after you finish walking each day
  • Discover the highlights of Japan's 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage trail.

Self-guided walking holidays in Japan are an amazing way to discover authentic Japan. There is so much to discover and so many highlights that people are often overwhelmed with choice.  While visits to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are a must, there is nothing like getting off the train high in the mountains after a week in Tokyo and experiencing the serene, deep calm.  Walking allows you to slow down, and experience rural life and a more traditional side of Japan, staying in some of the most beautiful and simple guesthouses you will ever stay in.

Walk the 11th-century  Kumano Kodo Pilgrim's Trail  through rural Japan to the three grand shrines of Kumano. There is also the immensely popular  Shikoku Pilgrim Trail , where you walk from temple to temple on one of Japan's stunning islands. Alternatively, walk the  Nakasendo Trail  through rural Japan through the central mountains of Japan. A hiking route used since feudal times as an ancient highway that linked Kyoto and Tokyo through Japan's central mountains.

Since 2003, Macs Adventure has been helping hikers complete the world's great walks, from the Tour du Mont Blanc and West Highland Way to pilgrimages on the Camino de Santiago. In 2013 we introduced Japan and have since sent thousands of travellers on the Kumano Kodo and Nakasendo Trails and Shikoku Pilgrimages on Shikoku Island.

Macs Adventure has been running self guided walking holidays in Japan since 2013.  Japan has such a unique culture and customs, but also a completely unique terrain that we wanted to find trips where hikers could immerse themselves and find the Japan of their dreams.

We provide the freedom to choose from our tried & tested routes, pick your own travel companions, and discover the Japanese culture and countryside at your own pace.

We know how daunting it can be, heading out to a country with such different ways, but we knew from experience how important it is to have amazing partners on the ground in Japan to deal with any issues that you might come across.  We are proud to say that our Japanese team are outstanding and should you have the slightest issue, they will fall over themselves to help you out, whether it is simply asking which bus to take or something more serious.

We'll make sure you have comfortable, friendly overnight accommodation in a mix of hotels and traditional Japanese Minshuku and Ryokan (guesthouses). We plan out as much as we can, so that you can spend your time exploring exactly what you want to see in Japan. You can book with confidence that we have it all covered for you.

We want to showcase our expertise, by giving you all the resources you will ever need.  In the planning stage, we have free guides, comprehensive videos and a host of staff with their own Japanese walking experience, waiting to answer your questions. On the route, we use high-quality digital mapping as well as the best maps and guidebooks to make sure you find your way.

We love Japan and our main aim is to make sure that you do too.

Why Book your Walking Holiday in Japan with Macs Adventure

People often worry about causing offence and upset when visiting Japan. While the Japanese people are incredibly kind and forgiving, here are a few cultural tips to get you started.

Shoes - Removing your shoes when entering someone's house, or the occasional place of business is good manners. When you are on a walking holiday in Japan, in the more traditional accommodations, Minshuku and Ryokan, you will remove your shoes at the front door and be provided with slippers for the duration of your stay.  You wear these everywhere indoors, with the exception of the toilet, where there is a special pair of toilet slippers.  It sounds very rigid and complex but is actually great fun.

Bowing - Shaking hands is not really a thing in Japan.  Some people will offer to shake hands out of respect for your culture, but in general, bowing is the way to go. It is a lovely experience to step onto the streets of Tokyo for the first time and see groups of people bowing to each other. It makes you realise where you are and it shows great respect when a foreigner takes on aspects of Japanese culture. It is generally only a short bow from the waist, but deeper bows show more respect.

Chopstick Etiquette - Chopsticks or Hashi ( 箸) in Japanese are used everywhere.  You can always ask for a fork if you are struggling (Fōku  フォーク) but it is a good idea to learn to use chopsticks before you go. However, just being able to use them is not all you need to know! There are a couple of things to keep in mind.  The main ones are to never stick your chopsticks in a bowl of rice/noodles.  If you are taking a break from eating, place your chopsticks on the little rest provided, or on the side of your plate.  The other major no-no is to not pass food from one set of chopsticks to another. Both of these are linked to Japanese funeral rites, where large chopsticks are used and the last thing you want to do is compare the meal someone has cooked to a funeral!

Mindfulness - Ingrained in the culture of Japan is a wonderful sense of mindfulness. Nobody in Japan does two things at once, everyone focuses on the task at hand.  So, nobody eats and walks at the same time, or smokes and walks at the same time.  There are designated smoking areas and places outside 7-11s where you can eat. Don't speak on the phone and walk, or ride public transport, focus on your phonecall, then carry on with what you need to do.  Small things, but worth replicating in the Western world.

Onsen Etiquette - Onsens are the (often natural spring) hot baths that Japanese people love. Onsens are a deep part of the culture and while we could write a book about Onsen rules, there are some basics to always obey.  Intense showering must be done before entering the bath.  The purpose of the bath is to relax, not to wash, so take a seat on the little stool and get washing. While everyone showers together (separated by gender of course) you do have a tiny towel with you should you wish to protect your modesty, and when you bathe, it is good form to sit this little towel on your head.  It also comes in handy to wipe away sweat while in the bath, they are HOT, usually 40-43 degrees centigrade, but after the first couple of uncomfortable minutes, it becomes an act of pure bliss, particularly after a day's walking.

Japan is a cultural experience and there genuinely is no better way to experience it than to take a hike out into the less-travelled parts of the country.

Cultural Tips for Visiting Japan

Japan has become synonymous with the art of Forest Bathing (Shinrin Yoku). Forest bathing has actually become a vital part of the preventative healthcare system in Japan. Studies have shown it can reduce the stress of the sensory overload accumulated by modern lifestyles. Swap modern sensory experiences for the natural sights and sounds of the forest and take in the stillness around you.

Whilst you are likely to experience the hustle and bustle of Japan's major cities on our tours, you will also see the polar opposite of it by experiencing and connecting with the Japanese wilderness on the Kumano Kodo Trail, The Nakasendo Trail or the Shikoku P ilgrimage Trail.

So as you walk through these serene Japanese forests, why not try some Forest Bathing? Use all of your senses - Feel the rough bark of a tree trunk, listen to the rustle of the leaves, notice the different smells of the forest and take a minute to really look at the beauty all around you. Breathe deeply and embrace the almost meditative state you may find yourself in as you take in all the nature around you and allow your mind to rest!

Forest Bathing, Japan's alternative form of well being

Laura visited Japan, taking in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and parts of the Nakasendo Trail and Kumano Kodo. This video shows you a little bit of what it is like to experience the crazy and calm side of this multi-faceted, wonderful country.

The Nakasendo Trail is the old road between Tokyo and Kyoto. This video shows you what it is like to walk this glorious trail, to escape to the serenity of the mountains and walk through tiny feudal towns, experiencing rural Japan, its outstanding hospitality and its incredible beauty.

The Kumano Kodo is an ancient pilgrimage through the mountains south of Osaka, to the Pacific Ocean.  The route takes you through some incredibly scenic parts of rural Japan, allowing you time to walk at your own pace and drink in the natural, untouched beauty of the Japanese Countryside.

Explanation of tour not detailed effectively. TOKYO Tickets for Hakone from Tokyo. (Romance train). Unclear of necessary tickets and no information relayed. ie a freepass was required for platform entry. A representative was expected for information re transport difficulties due to language barriers and an insight into the tour. We only got a package delivered to the hotel and never saw a representative. TRAIN JRP information not clear. ie could not book tickets from other stations and ticket sale needed to be from the actual departure station. Wasted time queuing twice for two hours. Name spelled wrong on one persons JRP. Ticket office were not going to issue the JRP and we had to argue it was a misspelling. Another delay. We appreciate it was a semi independent tour but could have done it ourselves. We joined a tour purposely to be more organised for us with clearer instructions. Tour guides for 2 half days only although it stated 1 full day and a half day. Only visited the Golden Temple and castle. Guide left us at the palace. If we had not purchased a remote WIFI at the airport for maps and translating we would have struggled to get around. Price did not match tour inadequacy. As you were informed prior to the tour, we were not staying overnight in Osaka. Was this reflected in the price? POSITIVES Previous Touradour TOURS I booked were excellent with efficient organisation and support. However, this was lacking the guidance. Tour guides were lovely people. Hakone No shower however loved the original Ryokan and excellent food. Hotels were all excellent with very good breakfasts and amenities. Overall we had a great holiday but feel the price certainly did not reflect the lack of communication and service.

Japan Kumano Kodo Highlights Hiking (Self-Guided) Tour

Japan Kumano Kodo Highlights Hiking (Self-Guided)

My wife and I took a 22 day tour of Vietnam and Cambodia with Odynovo Tours from February 24- March 16, 2024 Everything was excellent.Cristal Yao was the contact person and coordinator and she was responsive efficient and always helpful and a delight to work with She gave good suggestions and facilitated requests. The guides were all excellent, provided very useful information about history and culture and local customs as well as about the history of the Vietnam War They spoke very good English and were very attentive to any concerns or questions Our guide in Cambodia Vanna also known as Ram was superb and deserves special mention The other guides Eddie and Thai Denny were also excellent Also the drivers were also thoughtful and courteous and careful drivers especially with all the motorbikes! All spoke good English and were very attentive to our needs and questions. Overall the trip was wonderful Only issue was the weather in northern Vietnam and especially Halong Bay but that is beyond anyones control! We loved it and the Odynovo staff was great. We highly recommend Odynovo.
